Book Description
It's the summer before junior year, and Alice is looking forward to three months of excitement, passion, and drama. But what does she find? A summer working in a local department store, trying to stop shoplifters, and more "real life" problems than she could have ever imagined: A good friend becomes seriously ill, Lester has more romance problems than even Alice knows what to do with, and the gang from Mark Stedmeister's pool is starting to grow up a bit faster than Alice is comfortable with.... Fortunately for Alice her family and friends are with her through it all, and by the end of the summer, Alice finds she knows a whole lot more than she had in June.
Funny, touching, and always provocative, Phyllis Reynolds Naylor does it again, proving with this twenty-first book in the beloved Alice series that she understands what real girls think and feel.
Customer Reviews:
Not My Favorite!.......2007-06-16
I love the Alice books, but this one is not one of my favorites. It's still a wonderful read because Ms. Naylor is a wonderful writer, but I found parts of it a little tedious. As always, I love the characters, I love the way important social and relational issues are addressed, and I love the poignant ending. What felt "tedious" to me though was what came across as day-by-day journaling and I found myself wanting to get to the end of the book as quickly as possible. It's still a good read but just not my favorite in the series.
Another Alice Hit.......2006-08-05
I've been an Alice fan for more years than I can remember. I had been a little unsure of how I felt about the high school Alice, but "Alice in the Know" reassured me.
Alice is definitely growing up. I found the ending of this novel to be poigniant, and I read this one twice in the two weeks I had it from the library. There were still plenty of silly, embarassing moments (just like real life) but with some hard issues mixed in.
This is definitely my favorite Alice that's been out in a while.
Not as good as the others, but still great!!.......2006-07-22
As a dedicated reader of the Alice series, I was extremely excited when I saw the newest book on the book store shelf! Of course I bought it.
This book was not my favorite in the series, but I am surprised at the horrible reviews it has gotten. By no means is it a 'bad' book. It is simply (in my opinion) not my favorite.
Alice is still the same girl, except maybe a little more mature, and Alice fans will be very much satisfied with this book.
Here is the plot:
Alice is in the middle of the summer before here Junior year of High School, and her life is defenitely taking a different turn. Her dad is encouraging her to take a break from her job at his store, the Melody Inn, and explore different jobs. Her brother's love life just might be getting a lot more serious, and the usual gang of friends that hang out at Mark's pool are changing, some for the better, some for the worse.
Alice is obviously getting more mature, and giving more thought to her future. And, as the more recent Alice books usually do, Topics such as sex come up during the story. I think this is good, because often Teens or tweens are uncomfortable with these subjects, and it is good that books they enjoy reading educate them about these topics in a way that is fun.
Although not the best in the series, this book is still a must read for Alice fans! ENJOY!
One of the best in the series.......2006-07-07
I almost always look on amazon.com for reviews on books before I run out and get them at the bookstore. I was curious to see what THIS Alice book was about, and was really dissapointed when I saw that a lot of people had given it poor reviews. Therefore, I decided not to waste my money and buy it. But since I've read all of the other Alice books, I picked it up off of the shelf once I saw it at the local bookstore just to see what it was about. It looked pretty good, so I got it, despite it's bad reviews.
It captured my attention as soon as I finished the first page. As I was reading, I wondered how this could get such bad reviews on here? The only conclusion I could come to was that Alice is a little more reserved in this book and is growing up....not exactly as daring as she usually is.
Anyhow, it's a great book about Alice (16 years old), and how her Dad makes her get a job outside of the Melody Inn to "explore the outside world". She gets a job at Hecht's folding clothes and cleaning up the dressing rooms. And she really enjoys it, much to her surprise! Meanwhile, Lester's getting really serious about Tracy, and wants to ask her to marry him.
It's a really great book, and I, personally, really enjoyed it. And I think that the author should continue writing the series like she did this one! I thought it was one of the best in the series! Buy this book....believe me, you won't regret it.
Possibly the worst book in the series!.......2006-07-03
This book was a big dissapointment. I've been reading the ALice books since the beginning and I have got to say that this book lacks all the good things that the series has. It is very boring and there are no interesting parts. I didn't even bother to finish reading it because it was a big waste of my time. I hope that the next book in the series won't be like this book because if it is then Naylor might have possibly lost her touch.

It would be a great addition to interactive tests CDL COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE MANUAL.......2007-05-21
It is a great book that covers many areas of CDL secrets. However, to pass the test you need more. The interactive tests CDL COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE MANUAL offered by AplusB Software Corporation on Amazon, would be a perfect addition to this book. The information presented visually is received and processed by the brain faster than only a written message. People think much faster than they can read, so their minds tend to wander during a reading. The CDL COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE MANUAL, visualised software application helps keep you focused on the information.

Combination Vehicles.......2006-04-08
This book combines Combination Vehicles with Doubles and Triples. They are seperate test. The book does not go into the Trailer Hand Valve (trolley valve, johnson bar); Tractor Protection Valve; Trailer Air Supply Control, which are all required reading for the Combination Vehicle test. Beware if you are taking the CDL in the state of Texas the book does not cover Special Requirements for Texas Commercial Motor Vehicles. That is 16 pages of missing information that you need to know.
Good for Spanish Translation of English Truck Terms.......2006-03-16
I bought this book for my spanish CDL students whose english is limited. I felt it was a good companion to the english CDL study guide. It was helpful for translation of truck part terms that you cannot find in an english/spanish dictionary. I also bought the spanish video that goes with the book and found that useful and informational as well. I would recommend the book and video as a supplement to the english CDL study guide and videos when studying for the CDL permit tests. The only downfall is that if the instructor does not speak english and spanish this may be a problem as the instructor needs to understand both languages to correctly translate the book.
Great book, includes info needed for CDL exam, and industry........2003-03-18
I purchased this book b/c I am looking to get into the trucking industry. After I received this book, I was pleased. This book is well-layed out and describes all aspects of the trucking industry and CDL requirements. Each chapter is followed by a series of questions and the authors give tips throughout the book for passing CDL exams. Includes all endorsements, and the book was published in 2001, so you know it is not out-dated. Overall, I am satisfied with the contents and hope to get into the industry.

Fully updated with the latest laws, this guide is essential for the identification and management of personal and professional legal matters for members of the armed forces. Its 18 chapters point out military service implications of civil law, military law, claims, personal legal matters, ownership or lease of property, debt, marriage, divorce, lawsuits, and the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
Customer Reviews:
Martial Law is not that scary.......2004-01-06
I have the 2nd Edition (1992), which probably dated compared to the 4th Ed. Comprehensive introductory comparison between civilian law and UCMJ. It helps to know a little about civilian law and procedure, which, unfortunately, is almost impossible even for licensed trial lawyers to understand (judges and prosecutors are "trial lawyers" too). This book does help break the brainwashing perped by a lying "news" media and Hollywood disinfotainment, and gives useful advice to NEVER trust police, and NEVER speak with police, and to first speak with a lawyer you can trust. Unfortunately, most people never read a law book until it's too late to do much good. This should be required reading for every person before they enlist. Every person should have a law library anyway, for self-defense, since every person must look out for themselves versus criminals and/or government, and EVERY person is robbed by both every year (especially if they don't even know it). There are many areas skipped in the 2nd Ed, like VA benefits being stolen by VA for 100% of disabled retirees (steal either pension or disabilty). Also, vaccine waivers must be signed on first day of enlistment ONLY (US Census reported 320,000 disabled Gulf War Vets as of Census 2000, plus 35,000 dead is reported from gulfwarvets.com). There are, of course, massive areas of law ignored/censored by the authors, especially frauds perped by courts, as in most other "mainstream" law texts. This, fortunately, does not detract from the book, since that other information is available to those to work hard to seek it out. 2nd Ed has good explanation of pretrial strategy for choosing which tunnel in the infinite maze. Since General Tommy Franks was quoted in December 2003 that he wants martial law in USA today, perhaps all US citizens will need this book soon, after all US courts are shut down and replaced by military Civil Affairs courts-martial.

Although the author opens with a visit to her mother's native Ireland at 12 and ends with lighting candles in her new home in County Cork four decades later, this is no nostalgic memoir about getting back to your roots. Alice Carey has crafted a tough-minded examination of her complicated relationship with her heritage, a warm tribute to the theatrical free spirits who helped liberate her from an unhappy childhood. She grew up in Queens; her father often hit her and flew into a rage when his wife dared to augment the family's meager finances by working as a maid for Broadway producer Jed Harris. Helping Mammie in the afternoons, Alice glimpsed a glamorous, sophisticated world beyond the constraints of Catholic school and Celtic fatalism. She moved to Greenwich Village in her teens and made her life as a Manhattanite with a weekend home in Fire Island. When AIDS decimated that community in the 1990s, she and her husband moved to Ireland. Making an 18th-century farmhouse habitable is a black comedy Carey describes with a sardonic wit that echoes her Irish forebears and gay friends but is uniquely her own (she names "the Seven Dwarves of Restoration: Happy, Reluctant, Fearful, Suspicious, Wary, Hopeful, and Doubtful"). Her journey towards a new identity as "a real New Yorker living in Ireland" is all the more moving because it is chronicled with sharp perceptiveness and without sentimentality. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
The only child of poor Irish immigrants, Alice Carey's isolated childhood in a cold-water flat in Queens is transformed when her mother becomes maid to legendary Broadway producer Jean Dalrymple. In Ms. Dalrymple's Upper East Side townhouse, young Alice absorbs with delight a sophisticated theatrical culture that includes such notables as Jed Harris and Marilyn Monroe. Then, a visit to Ireland with her mother thrusts young Alice into another novel culture, one that simultaneously enchants and traumatizes her. When Alice returns to Ireland as an adult, she and her husband serendipitously find and fall in love with a ruined Georgian farmhouse. As they begin to convert the stables into a livable cottage, Alice unearths buried memories of a childhood played out in wildly divergent homes. I'll Know It When I See It is the witty and rueful examination of her struggles to make sense of—and peace with—her recollections of a bittersweet past. It is a book bound to appeal to a wide range of readers: Irish, New Yorkers, theater folk, and all those longing to buy a house in the old country.
Customer Reviews:
Finding "Home".......2007-02-02
Alice Carey read at the West Side YMCA's Writer's Voice on February 18, 2005. This is from my introduction to the event.
For most people, what probably drew them, or will draw them to this memoir, this author, this event, is one word in the subtitle of this marvelous book: Ireland. Whether you are as Irish as the characters described within "I'll Know it When I See It," or have a last name that sounds more like...Raucher...for instance, the word Ireland still conjures up a multitude of images, of the place itself, its long, difficult and complex history, and how it is also interwoven with the myths and tales of this country. And many of those images have little connection to any reality about the place; but, nevertheless...the romantic image of Ireland persists.
But "I'll Know it When I See It" is not a soft clover travel guide; for one, we spend as much time in Astoria, Queens and on 55th Street right here in Manhattan as we do in County Cork. The events that take place not five miles from the spot where this reading takes place are as indelibly recalled, and as potent for our narrator, as any that take place across the Atlantic, on that verdant island.
But, to this reader at least, the key word in the title is not Ireland; it is something even deeper and more universal: Home.
In this moving yet remarkably unsentimental book, Alice Carey makes it clear that no one finds "home" without a cost, a reckoning of what is lost. Whether it is letting go of--leaving--what one thought was their "home," or coming to terms with simply letting go of what other people expect you to accept as your place in the world, "I'll Know it When I See It" tells a powerful and entrancing tale. One that, because of Alice Carey's expert hand and ear for the beauty and power of language, her ability to make her words come alive on the page, takes us right into the places she, her family and dear friends inhabit, or even only visit.
An Easy and Pleasant Read.......2005-12-19
A friend, whom I accompanied on my first trip to Ireland last May, lent me Alice Carey's memoir "I'll Know It When I See It," knowing how enamored I have become of things Irish. Alice Carey, as a clever and witty story teller, has a natural knack for sizing up situtations and characterizing people that seems to be an Irish trait. Having lived for a while in NYC, I was amused by her reflections on the city, its rapid neighborhood changes, and at the same time dismayed at the stringent life she endured in Queens as a youngster, made especially difficult by a father whose abusive anger was probably rooted in the frustration of economic and social deprivation in a city where extreme wealth so clearly co-exists with poverty.
Alice's salvation resides in her mother, "mammie," whom she adored and who adored her. By the author's literary skill, mammie comes alive and endearing. One example is the episode where she and her mother attended the Broadway opening of "Peter Pan" starring Mary Martin, -a tale told with vivid detail. In her account of her ambivalent search for her roots in Ireland, I very much appreciated the account of her and her husband's finding and rehabilitating the Protestant mansion and rescuing the Catholic cottage from the cows near Bantry where they settled before tackling the manor house. That tale of renovation and acclimation would be a fitting sequel. Perhaps Alice Carey will treat us to that tale. A delicious read that ended all too soon.
Returning to Irish Roots.......2005-03-14
There's something about restoring a house that makes people want to write a book. Perhaps it's the epic nature of their undertaking and the growth they experience in the process. In this account, the house is in Ireland and the restorers are New Yorkers (with Irish roots). Pleasant enough reading, but nothing super-special about it.
The book includes tidbits about Broadway celebs, Fire Island and AIDs, and slight peeks into the Irish way of life.
Other books on home restoration or home building experiences that might interest you are Under the Tuscan Sun (Italy) or A Family Place (Nova Scotia). One I can't recommend is Turn Left at the Black Cow (Ireland).
Loved It!.......2002-12-30
What a wonderful, funny, enlightening book. Please Alice Carey - write me another one. My Irish mother would also like to read the next... Bravo!
A engaging read.... We want More...............2002-03-21
I found this book most enjoyable. It almost could of been
2 seperate books. Life on Broadway and Life on the Emerald Isle.
I would love Ms. Carey expand on both in future books....
A great read!!

The quest for peace and joy in a difficult world drives Walker's poetry. Even the most difficult moments can be redeemed, she seems to be saying in the excellent "Good Night Willie Lee, I'll See you in the Morning." Walker has grown as a poet, so that much of the strongest material comes in the later work, especially the wistful "Poem at Thirty-Nine." Highly recommended.
Book Description
Walker’s complete poems, including new and previously unpublished verse, collected for the first time-with author’s notes that provide historical perspective on spiritual and political issues of the last three decades.
Customer Reviews:
Walker Convert.......2002-06-25
Reading Alice Walker reviews here on Amazon is highly annoying. Either they praise her to the skies, scouring any who react with an analytical response, or they attack her for the racial simplicities that some see as marring her work (those who get annoyed by her "white folk have no rhythm" trope). Both extremes have not been very useful for promoting *my* greater understanding of her work--I see the talent seething, squirming in her--but through many books, there were twists in her choices that alienated her talent to me.
Simply put, this book that convinced me Alice is a Talent with a capital "T". She starts with a lovely preface, "In keeping faith with Poetry's honest help to me, I have not deleted or changed--beyond a word or two--anything I have written, though greatly tempted at times to do so. The young self, the naive promiscuous self, appear doubly vulnerable now, in light of my unexpected bonus of years, and the experience they have brought me. I embrace them all, as Poetry embraced me..." From there, she follows with some beautiful, beautiful poetry, speaking to the struggle to develop and improve as an artist.
There are mis-steps, irritations. "There are no tigers/in Africa!/You say./Frowning./Yes. I say./Smiling./But they are/very beautiful." doesn't do much for me. I prefer my evocations of Africa without this almost Disney-esque gloss of "all cool primitive things we'll embrace as African."
Cumulatively, however--the poems are terrific. It's not often that I read through an entire volume of poetry without putting it down. Read this book for all its warts and missteps--and glory in it for its terrific human achievement.
Surrounded With Inspiration.......1999-05-28
Startled to find so many poems that resonated in my own life, I copied many down and posted them around by room. Each provides a meditation on a different theme, from death to distraction, affairs of the heart to hunger and the nagging, geographic pull to home. When I give my speech at graduation next week, it will end with "The Nature Of This Flower Is To Bloom," thanks to Alice Walker.
Great Compilation.......1998-06-26
I love the structure of her poems. She writes for those who have forgotten how things used to be with African American life and struggles. My favorite section in the book is from "Revolutionary Petunias" and "Willie Lee." Walker has been an inspiration for me in writing poetry. I love her use of imagery in her free verse. It was commented that Walker relies too much on her relationships in her personal friendships in her writing. But I disagree. I propose that no one should read her poetry without reading her autobiography of her past. Most poets will create an illusion of situations, but Walker alludes to her past and speaks the truth to us all. I hope she sees this because I've always wanted to talk with her and ask her about the things I have written, but I am in the process of challenging myself to want the reader to feel something in a meter that they can feel but not see. Then THATS incredible. Nice work Ms. Walker
