Book Description

In this masterful and often surprising sequel to the acclaimed Duane's Depressed, the Pulitzer Prize- and Oscar-winning author of Lonesome Dove has written a haunting, elegiac, and occasionally erotic novel about one of his most beloved characters. Duane Moore first made his appearance in The Last Picture Showand, like his author, he has aged but not lost his vigor or his taste for life.

Back from a two-week trip to Egypt, Duane finds he cannot readjust to life in Thalia, the small, dusty, West Texas hometown in which he has spent all of his life. In the short time he was away, it seems that everything has changed alarmingly. His office barely has a reason to exist now that his son Dickie is running the company from Wichita Falls, his lifelong friends seem to have suddenly grown old, his familiar hangout, once a good old-fashioned convenience store, has been transformed into an "Asian Wonder Deli," his daughters seem to have taken leave of their senses and moved on to new and strange lives, and his own health is at serious risk.

It's as if Duane cannot find any solace or familiarity in Thalia and cannot even bring himself to revisit the house he shared for decades with his late wife, Karla, and their children and grandchildren. He spends his days aimlessly riding his bicycle

(already a sign of serious eccentricity in West Texas) and living in his cabin outside town. The more he tries to get back to the rhythm of his old life, the more he realizes that he should have left Thalia long ago -- indeed everybody he cared for seems to have moved on without him, to new lives or to death.

The only consolation is meeting the young, attractive geologist, Annie Cameron, whom Dickie has hired to work out of the Thalia office. Annie is brazenly

seductive, yet oddly cold, young enough to be Duane's daughter, or worse, and Duane hasn't a clue how to handle her. He's also in love with his psychiatrist, Honor Carmichael, who after years of rebuffing him, has decided to undertake what she feels is Duane's very necessary sex reeducation, opening him up to some major, life-changing surprises.

For the lesson of When the Light Goes is that where there's life, there is indeed hope -- Duane, widowed, displaced from whatever is left of his own life, suddenly rootless in the middle of his own hometown, and at risk of death from a heart that also doesn't seem to be doing its job, is in the end saved by sex, by love, and by his own compassionate and intense interest in other people and the surprises they reveal.

At once realistic and life-loving, often hilariously funny, and always moving, though without a touch of sentimentality, Larry McMurtry has opened up a new chapter in Duane's life and, in doing so, written one of his finest and most compelling novels to date, doing for Duane what he did so triumphantly for Aurora in Terms of Endearment.

1 out of 5 stars Ugh........2007-09-07

Duane's Depressed was such a beautiful book. I should have stopped there. While reading When the Light Goes, I kept calculating how many pages I had until the end - I didn't know how McMurtry was going to dazzle me in the last few pages. Oh... He didn't. Yes, I agree - Skip this book - and read one of his other, wonderful tales.

4 out of 5 stars Slender yes, but he still has it !.......2007-08-15

Yes, this is a slender book, full of blank pages, but the fact remains that a late in career Larry McMurtry not at his best is still way above 80% of the writers on the market today.

1 out of 5 stars Worse Ever.......2007-08-08

This series should have ended with DUANE'S DEPRESSED. I have read several of McMurtrys books and it's hard to believe this is the same man who won the Pulitzer for LONESOME DOVE. The gross amount of profanity and the sex scenes did not add anything to the book. In fact, this book did not really add anything to the story line. It should have just ended with Duane flying off to Egypt in DUANE'S DEPRESSED.

5 out of 5 stars TYPICAL McMURTRY.......2007-06-11

Very good read. Am proud owner of all Mcmutry's books. Since I am in the same age group as Duane I can relate to him quite a lot.

On September 8, 1900, a massive hurricane slammed into Galveston, Texas. A tidal surge of some four feet in as many seconds inundated the city, while the wind destroyed thousands of buildings. By the time the water and winds subsided, entire streets had disappeared and as many as 10,000 were dead--making this the worst natural disaster in America's history.

In Isaac's Storm, Erik Larson blends science and history to tell the story of Galveston, its people, and the hurricane that devastated them. Drawing on hundreds of personal reminiscences of the storm, Larson follows individuals through the fateful day and the storm's aftermath. There's Louisa Rollfing, who begged her husband, August, not to go into town the morning of the storm; the Ursuline Sisters at St. Mary's orphanage who tied their charges to lengths of clothesline to keep them together; Judson Palmer, who huddled in his bathroom with his family and neighbors, hoping to ride out the storm. At the center of it all is Isaac Cline, employee of the nascent Weather Bureau, and his younger brother--and rival weatherman--Joseph. Larson does an excellent job of piecing together Isaac's life and reveals that Isaac was not the quick-thinking hero he claimed to be after the storm ended. The storm itself, however, is the book's true protagonist--and Larson describes its nuances in horrific detail.

At times the prose is a bit too purple, but Larson is engaging and keeps the book's tempo rising in pace with the wind and waves. Overall, Isaac's Storm recaptures at a time when, standing in the first year of the century, Americans felt like they ruled the world--and that even the weather was no real threat to their supremacy. Nature proved them wrong. --Sunny Delaney

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

Reading in his signature dispassionate style, narrator Edward Herrmann brings an eerie calm to this powerful chronicle of the deadliest storm ever to hit the United States--a huge and terribly destructive hurricane that struck land near Galveston, Texas in September of 1900. Author Erik Larson re-creates the events leading up to the disaster in astonishing detail, tracing the thoughts and actions of Isaac Cline, a scientist with America's burgeoning U.S. Weather Bureau. Cline's unwavering confidence--"In an age of scientific certainty one could not allow one's judgment to be clouded..."--blinds the meteorologist to the deadly onslaught about to be unleashed. Herrmann's calculated performance reflects the impending doom and dangers inherent to an unquestioned and absolute faith in science. (Running time: 5 hours, 3 cassettes) --George Laney

Book Description

September 8, 1900, began innocently in the seaside town of Galveston, Texas. Even Isaac Cline, resident meteorologist for the U.S. Weather Bureau failed to grasp the true meaning of the strange deep-sea swells and peculiar winds that greeted the city that morning. Mere hours later, Galveston found itself submerged in a monster hurricane that completely destroyed the town and killed over six thousand people in what remains the greatest natural disaster in American history--and Isaac Cline found himself the victim of a devestating personal tragedy.

Using Cline's own telegrams, letters, and reports, the testimony of scores of survivors, and our latest understanding of the science of hurricanes, Erik Larson builds a chronicle of one man's heroic struggle and fatal miscalculation in the face of a storm of unimaginable magnitude. Riveting, powerful, and unbearably suspenseful, Isaac's Storm is the story of what can happen when human arrogance meets the great uncontrollable force of nature.

My first thoughts after finishing Isaac's storm was, that for such a big and devastating storm, it didn't seem do it justice. I wanted understanding (why didn't people leave?). I wanted some PICTURES!!.
As luck had it, someone who checked out the book before me had tucked a newspaper clipping pic in the inside flap, of the Bishops Palace and surrounding survivors w/ tons of lumber stacked up against them. THANK YOU whoever you are. I returned the picture to the flap.

Whatever happened to Dr. Samuel O.Young the amateur meteorologist? Sam kept a diary. And it seems was the only proactive person in town, in that he telegraphed his wife and children warning them not to come to Galveston because in his opinion, a big storm was coming.

One reviewer here claims Cline is a hero in Galveston but "Cline gave his official meteorological opinion that the thought of a hurricane ever doing any serious harm to Galveston was "An absurd delusion". Many residents had called for a seawall to protect the city, but Cline's statement helped to prevent its construction."
"Local legend has it that Cline took it upon himself to travel along the beach and other low-lying areas warning people personally of the storm's approach. This is based on Cline's own reports and has been called into question in recent years.
Cline did issue a hurricane warning without permission from the Bureau's central office in Washington, D.C. but by that point the city was already under water. I don't recall reading that Cline actually told anyone to get off the island..

I enjoyed the book but minus one star for lack of pictures.

I hear that John Edward Weems' book 'A Weekend in September' is also recommended reading on the 1900 storm.

4 out of 5 stars Erik Larson is Quickly Becoming a Favorite.......2007-09-10

"Isaac's Storm" is a fictionalized telling of a real-time tragedy. It tells the story of the hurricane that devastated Galveston and provides impressive details on the history and science of meteorology. For the story-telling aspect of the novel, Mr. Larson uses Isaac Cline, Galveston's weather observer at the time.

Erik Larson's committment to research and detail is impeccable. I wish he had been my history teacher in high school!

Again, another book by a great author, Erik Larson. I couldn't put it down, but then again I live in Florida and Hurricanes are of special interest to me. I'm not sure if you didn't live in a hurricane area, example Alaska, that this book would strike you the way it did me.

Secular religions are fascinating in the devotion and zealousness they breed, and in Texas, high school football has its own rabid hold over the faithful. H.G. Bissinger, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, enters into the spirit of one of its most fervent shrines: Odessa, a city in decline in the desert of West Texas, where the Permian High School Panthers have managed to compile the winningest record in state annals. Indeed, as this breathtaking examination of the town, the team, its coaches, and its young players chronicles, the team, for better and for worse, is the town; the communal health and self-image of the latter is directly linked to the on-field success of the former. The 1988 season, the one Friday Night Lights recounts, was not one of the Panthers' best. The game's effect on the community--and the players--was explosive. Written with great style and passion, Friday Night Lights offers an American snapshot in deep focus; the picture is not always pretty, but the image is hard to forget.

Book Description

The classic, best-selling story of life in the football-driven town of Odessa, Texas, with a new afterword that looks at the players and the town ten years later.

Return once again to the timeless account of the Permian Panthers of Odessa--the winningest high-school football team in Texas history. Odessa is not known to be a town big on dreams, but the Panthers help keep the hopes and dreams of this small, dusty town going. Socially and racially divided, its fragile economy follows the treacherous boom-bust path of the oil business. In bad times, the unemployment rate barrels out of control; in good times, its murder rate skyrockets. But every Friday night from September to December, when the Permian High School Panthers play football, this West Texas town becomes a place where dreams can come true. With frankness and compassion, H.G. Bissinger chronicles a season in the life of Odessa and shows how single-minded devotion to the team shapes the community and inspires--and sometimes shatters--the teenagers who wear the Panthers' uniforms.

3 out of 5 stars FRIDAY NIGHT LETDOWN.......2007-09-26

I came into this one with high expectations, especially since I lived in Odessa for a short time in 1986 on a job assignment. Talk about a bleak and desolate place...But I was truly amazed at the hubub around the Panthers. I think that was Gary Gaines first year. I remember the dead-red build up before the Lee game. Saw it all firsthand as a very temporary transplant.

The book was a dissapointment. Okay, but not great. Maybe he should have just written a book about Boobie. He didn't talk nearly enough about the games, for instance. Probably half the book is devoted to off the field issues. Racism, favortism, school system, ect. The rest is Boobie, Boobie, Boobie. Could have been so much better. A letdown beacause it came off as some kind of expose piece.

3 out of 5 stars Ok quick read but it's more tabloid than it is journalism.......2007-06-22

Ok book nothing outstanding. The writing I'd give about a 3. Pretty much college sophomore level. Negatively biased against almost everything generally considered good. A real hatchet job on just about everyone. The author bashes teachers, schools, colleges, parents, parenting, fans, churches, the school board, the coaches, he even spends a chapter bashing Bush #1 and the Republicans. He throws in some gratuitous scatalogical jokes about Bush. He goes out of his way to paint everyone in as poor a moral light as possible. In one case he beats up on a character but to obtain contrast later needs to paint that character in a good light so that he can paint someone else in a poor light.

I read the whole book in a few days at the beach. It's just an average book - not so bad that you put it down but nothing special. I can see the appeal especially to liberal boomer white America. It's the other white American that's bad in this book. You know the one that's not you or me. I figure the author must have won the Pulitzer by sullying some other sacred cow because honestly his writing just isn't that good. The metaphors he uses were unoriginal and were strangely forced in several cases. Read it if you got nothing better to do but I would think you should find better books on the subject of high school football.

"You saying I can't play football, all I know how to do is play football!" One of the famous quotes from Boobie Miles when he finds out that he can't be the star halfback he wanted. Back in Texas the Permian Panthers was in for a good football season, maybe even take state. With the star running back Boobie hurt, can they still pull it together? The answer to that and all the others is in the text of H.G. Bissinger's book Friday Night Lights. Friday Night Lights is a story about a football team playing their way to the state championship. My favorite part of the book would have to be the last game at state where they were getting completely pounded on but at the very end the Panthers were making an amazing come back. I think this is my favorite part because it is just so glorious and suspenseful and I just know exactly what that feels like. It seems that one big message just keeps coming up. It seems that the book is trying to tell you that you should never give up. To never let anyone hold you back, never let them stop you in believe what you strongly believe, just always try, just never give up. Friday Night Lights was pretty much an all around good book. Every part was exciting and really made you not want to atop reading. The only part that was kind of bad, but more of just a bummer, was the ending but only because I didn't wand it to end that way. But I guess it had more of meaning ending that way. I think all of you out there that like a good sports book that you should definitely go and pick Friday Night Lights up.

i thought that this book was just ok. it was just a meteocre book for me. yes, it is a good representation of big town fame and spotlight in a small town. it just did not hit the spot for me thats it.

5 out of 5 stars heartbeat of America.........2007-05-30

a fabulous book about the Permian Panthers of Odessa, TX and the MOJO magic that permeates thoughout the city. H.G. Bissinger has found the heartbeat of America in high school football as he writes in fascinating detail the story of the 1988 Permian Panthers. It could be any high school across American as the tradition, passion and politics of local high school football reign over a city that would seemingly have no identity without it's high scool football team. A wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a must!.......2007-06-25

This is an excellent, thorough guide to help you prepare for the EC-4 TExES. I looked at several books, but felt like this one had the best information. Though there is not a full practice test, there are practice questions throughout, which are just as (if not more)helpful. Each answer is explained fully (not only why answer A is correct, but why B, C, and D are incorrect).

Several professors contributed to the text, and I know that many others choose it as required reading for their courses.

I made a very high score on the exam, and I owe that score in part to this guide.

5 out of 5 stars very best study guide.......2007-05-17

This is the best study guide to pass the EC-4 test. It has lots of details. Only thing is there is no practice test at the end. There are preactice questions throughout the book though. I bought this along with the CLIFFs book for this test CLIFFs book has 2 practice tests and wasn't bad for the money. But this book is the one you should buy to pass the test. It is well worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Good Guide.......2007-05-12

This is a very complete guide to prepare for the TExES test. They cover a lot of area and have great depth. There are some minor mistakes in the book - typos and fragmented sentences, so you really have to focus when reading. I passed the test using only this guide and studying from it for about 2 months. I would suggest to anyone that this is a great buy.

5 out of 5 stars TExES EC-4 Content Exam.......2007-02-12

This is the BEST book ever. I studied this almost exclusively taking notes and passed the exam first time with a 282/300 score. This is a MUST HAVE item. You need to take it chapter by chapter instead of as a whole (it's easier to process).

5 out of 5 stars Great Preparation Guide Even For The 4-8 Generalist Test!.......2006-03-17

I took the TExES 4-8 generalist exam and couldn't find ANYTHING worth buying to help me prepare for the exam. A friend let me borrow her copy of this book. Even though it is written for those taking the EC-4 generalist exam, it has an excellent outline of U.S., Texas and World history. This information helped me remember facts that I had long since forgotten. There was also some information relating to ELA that I found helpful when taking the test. The math and science sections probably won't help you much on the 4-8 test, as those are tested at a much more difficult level than EC-4. However, this book is a great resource for S.S. and ELA!!
BTW - I passed my test. :)

5 out of 5 stars Extremely helpful.......2007-07-24

I am very glad I bought this book. This was all I needed to pass the EC-4 on the first try. I don't know how it compares to other review books since this is all I had, but it helped me.

4 out of 5 stars Very Decent.......2007-07-13

I have never taken any education related courses prior to buying this book. I am currently enrolled in an online altern program that is set to begin in the Fall.

This book helped me pass the test. Not a highly impressive score(258)but I did pass and I guess that's what matters.

Although it was helpful, I wasn't entirely impressed with the book. I am sure that there are better books out there but then again I did pass on my first try with no prior educational background.

I would recommend buying this book as a supplement to other books that you may have. I would also recommend really focusing on the English portion of the study guides.

4 out of 5 stars Hopefully Worth the Price!.......2007-06-19

I am cheap... and opted for the Cliffs Review for the TExES EC-4 Generalist, because it was less expensive than the $40-60 books also available. Really, though, I feel like it was a good deal. It covers pretty extensively the domains and competencies necessary for the test. It was especially helpful for the ELA & Reading questions (which make up about 40% of the test)!

The social studies portion of the book I found a little lacking, and the questions they give you to prepare with seemed of a different ilk than those you can get from the TExES site directly, but overall, the extra practice is a big help, and you can't beat the price!

I took the test only four days ago, so I can't say whether I passed, but I am certain I would have been much worse off if I hadn't invested several hours study time in this book. :)

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad book for the money, not the best though.......2007-05-18

This is not a bad book for the money you spend. It includes practice tests and small summarys of each areas. I recommend the Preparing for the Texes PreK-4 Teacher Certification by Janice Nath as the best study book. This book does have practice test that the other one doesn't. Nath's book does include more summary and explination of each area as well as sample questions after each part. If you can't afford Nath's book get this one, it isn't bad.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Review Book.......2006-05-10

This is an excellent book. It covers what you need to know and WHY! The exam section gives detailed explainations as to why the coreect answer is correct and why the others are incorrect. It really helped me pass the test.

I studied this book for 10 days, then took the CAT administered EC - 4 Generalist exam. I passed.

1 out of 5 stars Sp. Ed. EC-12 161.......2007-06-28

This book wasn't very helpful as a review for this exam. There were LOTS of typographical errors in the book. Also lots of repetious information. I was taking the exam without taking the course work, but I have 30 years experience teaching. The book wasn't that much help. I'd say it wasn't worth the $60 I spent on it.

2 out of 5 stars Could be better.......2007-06-27

This study guide was full of grammer errors. There were sentences written where I had to revise in order for them to make any sense. It looks like noone took the time to proofread this study guide. When I was reviewing the practice tests, some of the answers to the questions were wrong. I was worried about memorizing and learning incorrect information. The book did have alot of information in it, but I wouldn't have paid $60 for this item.

4 out of 5 stars Spec ED 161 study guide.......2007-05-20

This book really assisted me in passing the exam. If you studied this book thoroughly you are sure to pass the exam on the first try. However, though they updated the book from previous years, it is shame that it contained so many typos. I wonder how could an editor published it. Another thing that i did not really like is the answer located right beneath the question, it did not allow me to test my skills. However, I really liked the explanation after the answers.

If you want to pass the Special Ed Content area this is a must buy.

3 out of 5 stars Ok but could be better.......2007-05-06

I got this book in preparation for the Texes Teachers Exam and for the price was highly suprised that there were a lot of typos and mistakes in it. That said there is a lot of good material in it and suggestions of what to study and I did pass the exam on the first try. I think they could make an improvement on there practice tests though and not have the answers to the questions right below the answer choices. Altogether it was ok but definitely could have been lower priced for all the mistakes and typos.

Book Description

"Laurence Parent's work is superb. He is without a doubt one of the signature photographers of Texas. He has shot many of the iconic images of Big Bend National Park—images that have appeared in the New York Times, Texas Highways, Texas Monthly, and Texas Parks & Wildlife, as well as in books about the park and West Texas."

—Jack Lowry, Editor, Texas Highways

"Joe Nick Patoski's writing in Big Bend National Park is compelling and knowledgeable, done with great confidence and passion for the subject."

—Jan Reid, author of The Bullet Meant for Me and editor of Rio Grande

Big Bend National Park is one of the few places left in America where a person can literally get away from it all. Nestled in the great bend of the Rio Grande that forms one of the most distinctive features of the silhouette of Texas, the park is several hundred miles from any large city. Within its 1,250 square miles of mountains, canyons, desert, and river, Big Bend National Park offers visitors respite from the stresses of urban living—a place for taking stock and charting new courses. That's one reason why many people return to the park year after year.

This book is the first and only comprehensive photographic and word portrait of Big Bend National Park. Laurence Parent presents a magnificent photo gallery of park scenes. He portrays the mountain ranges—Chisos, Dead Horse, Rosillos, and Sierra del Carmen—from first light to moonrise and in all seasons and weather. He includes dramatic images of Santa Elena, Mariscal, and Boquillas canyons, as well as landmark features such as Mule Ears Peaks, Elephant Tusk, and the Chisos Basin Window. Parent also portrays the ephemeral beauty of Big Bend wildflowers, including giant bluebonnets and blooming prickly pear cactus, as well as the traces of human habitation at ghost towns scattered around the park.

Joe Nick Patoski complements Parent's images with a masterfully crafted word portrait of Big Bend National Park. Patoski describes the powerful geologic and volcanic forces that created the awe-inspiring landscape of the Big Bend. He reviews the park's natural history and also its human history, from the prehistoric hunter-gathers who ranged over the region to Cabeza de Vaca, who was probably the first European to see Big Bend, to the creation of the national park in the 1930s and 1940s. Patoski also summarizes recent conservation efforts that have led to the protection of 2.1 million acres on both sides of the Rio Grande.

Although no single book could ever hope to contain the vastness of Big Bend National Park between two covers, this one beautifully captures its essence.

Great photography with poetic like readings. A different approach to enjoy this incredible Park. Actually comes alive. Took the book and relived some of the pictures with the readings in person. My way of enjoying nature through anothers eyes and words.

4 out of 5 stars CAPITOL OF TEXAS.......2007-10-14

This is a very good guide to Austin, at least it seems the author has actually visited the city and done some research, the author seems to have a feel for the city. I am very familiar with austin, having attended UT, and reading through this book, I agree with most of its assessment of hotel, restaurants and sites. Austin has a reputation for being a great place to live, which it is..uh if you have lots of descresionary income, if not well, maybe not so great. Austin is not really considered a big tourist destination, but there is actually much to see and do there and this guide really fleshes it out. If you do go, dont forget this guide, it's probably the best ive seen, and be sure to see the capitol, the Blanton on the UT Campus and Lady Birds spectacular wildlife center. If you are fit, hit the great trails all over austin, they are fantastic, Austin is very "outdoorsy"...

5 out of 5 stars Insider's Guide to Austin.......2007-04-11

I found this book to be very helpful...we will take it with us on an upcoming trip to Austin. It was helpful both with the "things to do" aspect, but also on the subject of relocating...which we are considering. The author is an Austinite herself, and has an informative, positive approach to the city.

I've lived in Austin for over 16 years and was very interested in knowing what others say about it as well as what suggestions they might have. Needless to say, I found out much more than I anticipated and am grateful to have this wonderful reference book in my library now.

The authors condense much information into a concise, readable publication that could easily be carried in purse while trekking the area. It's also a great reference guide to have not only for out-of-town visitors, but for residents also.

The beginning of the book gives a quick overview while touching on politics and history. The remainder of the book covers hotels/motels, B and Bs, restaurants, night life, music scene, shopping as well as attractions, annual events, arts, recreation, and sports. For those wanting to move to Austin the authors address relocation as well as the senior scene, health care, education, schools and places of worship.

As I perused "Insiders' Guide® to Austin" I spent more time than I anticipated - in fact hours more, and not only that, this is a book that I will keep in my vehicle because not only does it give detailed information it also has pertinent maps that are easy to follow. Also, the restaurant guide is very in depth and I found many that we frequent and highly recommend, however, there are many others that I put on our "must try" list. The other section that was of particular interest to me was "kidstuff." I wish I had this book when our grandchildren were younger and came to visit. I often struggled trying to find fun activities for them to attend.

Whether you are a resident of the Austin area, or anticipating a visit or relocation, "Insiders' Guide® to Austin" is a must have. It has everything in it that you need to know, and more.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Guide.......2007-07-17

This is an excellent study guide for aspiring Teachers that are preparing to take the state test. If it has been awhile since you thought about Celsius, molecular motion, nuclear fusion, condensation hypothesis, and prevalent elements in the biosphere...then you will benefit from this book. I also recommend reviewing other books of this nature.

3 out of 5 stars Test Review Booklet useful, but needs proofing!.......2007-05-18

This test review booklet contained useful information and helpful tips, but also a number of incorrect spellings which cast a bit of doubt on the veracity of the book overall.

I reviewed for the TExES exam using some textbooks and online resources as well, and passed the test.

I recommend this book as a part of your exam preparation, but do not rely upon it solely.
