Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
More of the entertaining destructive and self-destructive antics of the Ultimates. The general public now know that Banner is the Hulk, and his trial demands capital punishment.
Giant-Man is Ant-Man, Iron Man is married. There is the aftermath of the alien invasion to deal with, and now, Loki.
The best of Ultimate Marvel.......2007-05-08
In a nutshell, "the Ultimates" AKA the Ultimate Avengers is far and away the best of Marvel's Ultimate titles, as evidenced by its top-rating among all of Millar's books. Interestingly, it rates higher than his other Ultimate titles...I think in general the tone is the most adult and most serious of the Ultimate books - closer to the new Battlestar Galactica or Season 5 of 24 than than to its comic peers.
While I liked Ultimate Fantastic Four, Ultimate X-men, etc - this is the standard bearer of the line - even if you don't follow the avengers, this is an easy to grasp title. And Volume 2 is far better than volume 1!
great tpb..........2007-02-08
i hated the ultimates 1 vol 1, the ultimates 1 vol 2 was a lot better but still not great.
the ultimates 2 vol 1 however is great. i still hate the idea of bruce banner being a scumbag, and there are a bunch of other ultimate universe things that carry into this that i don't like. but overall this is a great tpb and highly recommended.
Ultimates 2 With Ultimate Consequences.......2006-10-11
This one is set one year after the original storyline ends with The Ultimates now under public scrutiny after it is mysteriously leaked to the media that Dr. Bruce Banner is The Hulk and that The Ultimates were behind the cover-up! Now, the public is calling for Banner's execution!
Captain America and The Wasp have been in affair while Giant-Man has been outed from The Ultimates due to the domestic problems between him and The Wasp and the P.R. mess it made. Still, The Wasp still shows some mercy towards her former husband though she hasn't shown any interest in hooking back up with him. This hasn't made old-school gentleman Cap happy at all.
Getting back to the leak on the Hulk, it may be coming from none other than Thor himself, who was already not very well trusted to begin with! Plus, we discover some new revelations about this Thunder God!
All in all, a good follow up to the original Ultimate storyline!
Another bold & unique reinvention of the classic Avengers .......2006-10-08
After I finished this chapter in the continuing "Ultimates" saga, all I could do was shake my head and go "wow". I have never seen or read anything like this, and that is high praise. The last volume was absolutely incredible and really set a high bar for realistic characterization and incredible battles in this series. What comes about in this volume is the near-disintrigation of everything that was built up in the earlier volumes. There is not one legitimate villain to fight in this story: no rampaging Hulk, no alien invasion, no Nazis, no Kang, Magneto, Galactus or any other uber-villain one would expect Ultimate Marvel's team of "persons of mass destruction" to face. Their biggest enemy at this point is themselves. Giant Man no more, wife-beater Hank Pym (now old-school Ant Man) is a pathetic mess in this volume who joins a group of superhero wannabes (the Defenders; originally an actual Marvel superteam -albeit a 2nd rate one- who are reduced to incompetent posers in this version) in what proves to be an amusing but ultimately annoying chapter after what proves to be the main attraction here: the arrest of the mighty Thor, who resigns from the team, believing SHIELD's secret agenda is to use them to attack foreign countries . After Thor's anti-war activism goes too far, the Ultimates are grouped with their fledgling European counterparts to take the god of thunder down in what proves to be a battle of epic proportions. Thor is clearly portrayed as a Christ-like figure here in spite of his apparent mental illness (but is he actually insane as his origin -finally revealed- insinuates, or is his brother Loki truly "shuffling reality" and poisoning the Ultimates against him?) and several shots in the sequence are difficult to look at as he battles his own friends. The fact that you truly don't know whether a classic character like Thor is insane in this re-imagination or if his classic nemesis Loki is a figment of his imagination is a true credit to the writing here. Kudos. The trial of the Incredible Hulk, which commences after Bruce Banner is outed by an unknown traitor as a member of the team, proves to be an interesting but too brief episode with a memorable and unexpected finale. More kudos. So far, "The Ultimates" has kept me rivetted and while this volume has much going for it, I hope for a return to the more simplistic awesomeness of "Homeland Security" in future volumes because all of this infighting, while brilliantly executed, takes away from what I really want to see: Earth's Mightiest Heroes battling the most powerful villains around. Also, the political commentary is getting a bit out of control at this point too. We're all tired of the war in the Middle East, and this issue aims this team of classic heroes in a corrupt, fascist direction that could soon border on villainy. It's a bit depressing to imagine the Avengers as government lapdogs fighting for imperialist interests. Will then next chapter have me rooting for the traitor in SHIELD's ranks? And, on a lighter note, Quicksilver gets his moment to shine here, but would it kill them to give the Scarlet Witch something to do besides look hot and hang on her brother's arm suggestively? When you look at every panel they appear in together, their relationship seems a bit creepy to say the least. I keep waiting for Tony Stark to make an Angelina Jolie remark at their expense. However, there is one line Quicksilver delivers to his sis involving one of Hank Pym's new creations that is quite humorous if you know your Avengers lore, so I'll let this stuff slide....this time. But Scarlet Witch's only moment of note in the big battle is threatening to create a reality where Thor is a baby seal getting clubbed before she gets promptly clobbered herself. Come on, Wanda, do something cool! I also wasn't thrilled about Iron Man's birthday present to fellow Ultimate and current lover, Black Widow; her very own custom-made supersuit. Personally, I loved her just the way she was before. Iron Man has a habit of making other characters clones of himself and it's a bit annoying in a title where a diverse array of superheroes is the big draw. Minor fanboyish complaints aside, "Gods and Monsters" proves to be a shocking and unique continuation of an already bold new take on a classic comic franchise. I've honestly never seen anything quite like it and I'd highly recommend picking this one up after catching up on the past volumes of this increasingly intriguing saga.
Book Description
The House of Cthulhu introduces the weird and wonderful world of Theem'hdra, an island continent of wonders and terrors, where brave men die terrifying deaths, awe-inspiring sorcerers hurl powerful magic at each other, and monsters abound. This is classic Lovecraftian horror from one of the masters of the form, British Fantasy Award-winner Brian Lumley.
The volcanic eruption that created the island of Surtsey in 1967 also revealed a long hidden cache of documents that told the fantastic history of Theem'hdra as written by the sorcerer Teh Atht. Building on translations begun by the scholar Thelred Gustau-who vanished under mysterious, some say magical, circumstances-Brian Lumley brings the saga of the Primal Land to readers of today.
Here, the wizard Mylarkhrion-most powerful of the terrible magicians who walked the earth in those long-ago days-battles sorcerers jealous of his knowledge, power, and wealth. His own apprentice, thinking he knows all of his master's secrets, challenges him-but Mylarkhrion has one final trick up his sleeve . . . . When the assassin Humbuss Ank, who specializes in killing wizards, makes Mylarkhrion his target, he avoids or destroys nearly all of the sorcerer's traps, forcing Mylarkhrion to a final, desperate gamble for survival. But even Mylarkhrion has a weakness, a lust for power that drives him to summon the Great One, Cthulhu, and so call doom upon himself!
The fabled riches of the House of Cthulhu draw thieves and warriors from throughout the civilized-and uncivilized lands, but none escape with so much as a single gemstone, for they discover that Cthulhu's House is not a temple but a dwelling-place. Surely the Elder God lives there still, waiting for an unwary person to open the portal between his world and ours . . . .
Customer Reviews:
Uninspired Fantasy, that has little to do with Lovecraft.......2006-03-04
I managed not to be able to finish this book. I read through to the short story House of Cthulhu, were I shrugged my shoulders and set the book down. The only merit in this book, is the introduction which is the only thing that has any Lovecraft feeling. This is more like a Dungeons and Dragons collection of moral fables. Every story was predictable and one that has been written better many times by many different authors. If you have kids and they have an inkling towards fantasy then I highly recommened this book for bedtime story reading, as the morals will give them something to chew over, in a nice fantasy package. All in All this is a dull uninspired fantasy mess, that gets you no where fast... and leaves you wondering if the people that made comments on the book jacket have ever actually read any H.P. Lovecraft.
Nothing New.......2006-01-18
In the past I have enjoyed Lumley's books, however, this one is a tired collection that is a mostly boring rework of Lovecraft's fiction. I finished the book hoping to find something interesting but, no luck.
Wondrous Tales of Fantasy and Terror.......2005-10-07
Enter the world of Theem'hdra, an island continent where sorcerers make war against one another, warriors die in the most terrifying of circumstances, and wonders abound. Meet the mighty wizard Mylakhrion, a powerful and terrible sorcerer who must battle lesser wizards jealous of his powers, knowledge and wealth. Monsters roam this mysterious realm where even Mylakhrion's own apprentice seeks to unseat the great master, but when an assassin named Humbuss Ank, whose specialty is killing wizards, comes to unseat the mighty Mylakhrion, the assassin finds himself confronted with supernatural powers to match his mercenary brilliance. Mylakhrion's quest for power, however, is diluted by his lust for personal power, which drives him to summon the Great One, Cthulhu, the master of doom itself. Warriors, wizards, thieves and wonders abound in this weird, amazing and horrifying world that could only be envisioned by Brian Lumley. You must own the Grand Master's fable of the Primal Lands in this first general US printing. You will be entranced!
terrific collection.......2005-08-26
In 1967 a treasure of ancient secret tomes were discovered that shed a light on the great primal island continent of Theem'hdra where sorcery wars were the norm. As the scribe of these incredible documents, the White Wizard Teh Atht described a time when sorcerers like Mylarkhrion the most terrible stole or protected magical knowledge from one's peers and other hired hands; a time when summoning of Cthulhu the Great One doomed all.
This compilation is predominantly a reprint of a 1984 book. The current book contains the introduction and nine of the eleven tales (lacks "Isles of the Suhm-Yi" and "Curse of the Golden Guardians" for ye purists) in the 1984 book plus one other addition ("To Kill a Wizard). The tales are all well written as they come across as fantastic horror yet feel as if they historically happened and that the age of The House of Cthulhu existed, perhaps because of the clever set up by Brian Lumley possessing the works of noted but vanished 1960s scholar Thelred Gustau. This early Lumley shows his Lovecraft roots in a terrific collection.

Pretty Good.......2006-08-21
This book is a great read but I feel it's not as good as the second one by a little bit and that's why I gave it four stars. That being said it is still very well written with great artwork to follow it up. I'm just beginning to get into The Incredible Hulk and I find these books to be great. I'd reccomend them for anyone that's just starting out like me or any long time Hulk fan.
It all starts here.......2006-04-14
The beginning of Bruce Jones fantastic conspiracy run of the Hulk starts here with one of my favorite artists, John Romita, JR. Blamed for the death of a small boy while rampaging as the Hulk, Bruce Banner tries unravel a mystery while eluding mysterious agents that are after him.
welcome bruce jones.......2005-11-09
This TPB includes Incredible Hulk 34-39 and the new team are Bruce Jones -a veteran horror writer-, the art of John Romita Jr-the son of the legendary Spider Romita and a legend for his previous works Starbrand , Thor etc- and the inks of Tom Palmer
where is the hulk?.......2004-10-25
this book has 144 pages and of those 144 pages, 9 or 10 pages
(not including the covers)shows the hulk, the rest is banner and his struggle . the plot is bad , by reading the other reviews, is what made me buy this book. now that i read it, i'm wondering if i bought the wrong title, no it was the right book, it just the other reviewers don't know what they're talking about. the art is beautiful, that is the only thing i can say that good about this trade back. the book reads like an X-files episode , meaning the creature (the hulk) stays in the shadows only showing up briefly. the plot really stinks. bruce jones's ideal of a battle with the hulk is to send out 2 hired guns to defeat him (to kill or bring to justice, i'm not sure which) there are some of things that are weak in the writng, for instance why are people who have been shot in the head still walking or thier odd behavior afterwards, the author gives no explaination. to me the hulk should be bigger than life,in the marvel universe ( and ours as well) the hulk is known world wide, he is hunted by the miltary , he is hounded by the the super human teams,( avengers, fantastic 4,, etc..)he is feared by humans, He is a weapon of mass destruction, but he is NOT a sulking figure that hides in the shadows and suppressed by weak knee wimp like bruce jones, ( opps! i mean bruce banner). the book stinks, it reads stupid, do yourself a favor and skip this one
Downright Frightening. One Of The Best Hulk Stories Ever .......2004-10-02
Reprints #s 34-39 of the current ongoing "Hulk" series, featuring the debut of Bruce Jones, and a great jumping-on point for anyone who hasn't read the series in a long time, or an ultimate treasure for longtime fans.
Without giving too much away, Bruce Banner is on the run from just about everyone, with the Hulk accused of killing a child in a rampage. The trouble is, the evidence that this ever occured is in short supply, and ulterior motives seem to abound. The six comics reprinted here are all absolutely top-notch (and include one issue from Marvel's "Nuff Said" event, where the comics unfolded entirely without words. I don't know about all the others, but this one worked incredibly well, and blended into the larger story seamlessly) Flawless dialogue, stunning art (including the stunning reprinted covers from the original issues) and a somewhat different incarnation of the Hulk than we've seen before. The thing about the Hulk is that it's been established many years ago that the Banner/Hulk split cracks in more than 2 directions (remember Joe Fixit?) so you can do stuff like this without contradicting continuity.
One of the very best Trade Paperbacks on the market. If you've never read a comic book before, or you haven't read one in decades, this book alone could hook you into the wonderful world of comicdom.

Customer Reviews:
Screw Hogwarts!.......2006-03-07
Harry Potter and Slayers were two factors that probably went into this Korean manga. Creator Hee-Joon Son came up with a strange world where the realm of demons crosses over with the human one. But before most young demons can, they have to go to school!
It starts out with Sang, a young energetic redhead who really seems teamed to enter into Hades, the school for up and coming demon teens. Her personal mission, for reasons to be explained later on, is to gain access to the school and locate a special ring. The ring itself is currently in the possession of Notra, a scantily-clad succubus who is supposedly engaged to the actual prince of Hell, and was given the ring as an engagement present.
In order to get in the school, Sang runs into a group of kids playing hookie. It's Dev the demon, Mordicus the vampire, Pannus the mummy, and Lukan the werewolf. Sang asks for Mordicus to bite her, and she "temporarily" gets vampire fangs to make herself look like a student at the demon school. However, some humans from a religious guild come looking for the ring too, and slash off a few of the students to get it. But, the seemingly vanquished monsters come back to life, only more powerful(sorta like Saiyans). Sang and the others team up to stop them from gaining the ring and having the gates of Hell at their command.
Phantasy Degree(or just PHD)is developing into a great action fantasy so far. It's got great comedy mixed in with action that the typical Yu Yu Hakusho fan would like.
:D.......2005-07-20
Hilarious, A young girl searching for the demon school hades meets up with some demon dropouts (a werewolf as friendly as a squirrel, a weak demon, a pathetic mummy, and a vampire) and she convinces them to give her a tour of their school. One small problem, she has to be a demon to go to their school. Once that problem is solved by having the vampire bite her, a tour is given to Sang, who runs away when threatened by a bunch of demon bullies. Yet there seems to be more to this girl then meets the eye, is Sang really a powerful scorceress? Honestly I don't know, so we'll all just have to wait and see don't we? *pouts* I hate waiting.

Customer Reviews:
Really. Really. Good. .......2007-10-02
This revamp of the Tbolts series is more than anyone could ask for. The premise of a group of government sponsored supervillains masquerading (it's really about all you can call it with the exception of the honest intentions of Songbird and Radioactive Man) as law enforcement and bringing in D-list Marvel heroes is awesome. Deodato's art is dark and fits the book well and Ellis' writing is quick, smart, and enjoyable. Overall this series was great in single issues but the story flows better in trade form and provides for an extremly fun and rewarding read.

Very Entertaining.......2007-03-20
Great Art, Superb story, I got hooked from the begining; and I will sure
read em all.
a brilliant thriller.......2007-01-04
I'll keep this one short - you need to buy this to see how easy it is for a master to pull you in without even introducing characters or a plot! It's an incredible page-turner, even backwards and in black and white. Reader beware: there are only 4 or 5 volumes of the 18 or so available right now! If you start this you will be in for the long haul. If you get really addicted you can always torrent some fan subs of the extremely faithful anime production.
Monster.......2006-12-28
Unbelievable! You will be engrossed in the world created by Naoki Urasawa. The story is superb and the character development couldn't be more detailed. The pychoanalysis of each player is unmatched in other manga. You can't get better than this. The content is intelligent and accurate. The author did his homework on psychology, neurology, surgical procedures and the history of Germany around the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall. It's impressive. Not much on Japanese culture but that's also interesting. You have a Japanese protagonist and you have German culture. Morality and how far you can push someone until they loose their humanity is explored. The antagonist is facinating. In some novels he doesn't even make an appearance yet you feel his presence throght the elaborate descriptions of his character from the mouth of others. Nicely done. The action is non-stop, especially in volume four. The violence is very real and it will get to you. But you won't loose hope because the main character is so amazing.
EXCELLENT.......2006-07-10
I've read both volume 1 and 2 of Urasawa's Monster and find it excellent. Even if you are not a fan of manga, and you find a little odd reading "backwards", these books worth it.
Urasawa's art is (and is not, at the same time) the typical japanese manga art. Is good, clear and well paced. The story is interesting, intriguing and, even if you have the main elements of the story known from almost the beginning of volume 2, your "need" to go on and read the story, and to see how it develops until the end (and what will be the end) is great. An the "need" turns on to be more important while you turn the pages.
I don't know exactly how many volumes it will take to get to the end, but you can count on me to faithfully be there to read it. And I think if you give it a try you will surely be there too.
Maybe You Have to Be Older ..........2006-05-04
I'm extremely fond of MONSTER (from the anime) ... but does it occur to NO ONE that it's really only a very clever paraphrase of THE FUGITIVE? (THE FUGITIVE was, in turn, a present-day gloss on LES MISERABLES, but at least series creator Roy Huggins admitted so right up front.) Maybe one has to be old enough to remember the 1960s TV series to make the connection, but it's not a casual one ...
Check it out: The main character [Dr. Tenma/Dr. Kimble] is framed for (a) murder(s) he did not commit by an enigmatic villain [the one-armed man/Johan] and suddenly finds himself a fugitive. He travels hither and yon in pursuit of the bad guy, with a relentless, obsessive cop [Inspector Morse/Detective Lunge] on his trail. Elements of conspiracy and cover up from the genres of cold war thriller and psychological suspense are blended in, to be sure, adding layers and variations -- but it is THE FUGITIVE all the same. And I'd be flabbergasted if Urasawa Naoki (the creator of the source manga) didn't use the series or the Harrison Ford movie as conscious inspiration.
Book Description
When three Digimon fans end up with real Digimon, they discover that taking care of a living creature is much more work than dealing with a few pixels on the TV screen. Each of our three would-be heroes must discover for themselves that being a Tamer means working together despite their differences in order to make life enjoyable for everyone.
Customer Reviews:
A fine additon to the Digimon canon.......2005-11-09
After the fiasco that was the 02 manga, practically anything would seem good in comparison! Lucky for us, Digimon Tamers has genuine quality. As Izzy would say, it's "Prodigious!"
I've only read Vol. 1 (I'll edit this when I finish the series), but I like what I've read so far. Basically, this volume tells the familiar story of how Takato, Rika, and Henry met their partners Guilmon, Renamon, and Terriermon, and the trails and tribulations they had while learning to get along. Though there are no new storylines, the animé has been skillfully adapted, and in some cases improved. You won't see any out-of-place jokes in this manga. Don't get confused, there's plently of humor, but unlike the forced humor used in the TV series it comes naturally, making the jokes actually seem, lo and behold, funny! As the humor comes naturally, so does the characterization: These are the exact same personalities you came to know and love in Digimon 03. You won't see any jive-talking Davis in this manga! :)
The Digimon Tamers manga is a return to form. After the ineptly written Zero Two saga, it's good to see that the people in charge are taking the effort to make decent Digimon manga again.
Digimon Tamers.......2004-06-05
Does the manga artist just not like Season 02? It's definitely one of my favorites. Season 02, of over 50 episodes was covered in two volumes. That's not a proper treatment, that's barely a summary.
However, they seem to overcome this problem here in Tamers. This volume takes us up to Episode 11 - Much Ado about Musyamon. The jokes are great - the author seems to love Calumon and Terriermon. Has interesting info cut from the dub, Writing is good. And the art is great. If you like Tamers, I think you'll like this. Tamers wasn't my favorite series but I enjoyed this and wait for the next volume. Wonder if they'll do Frontier too.

High priced T.P. !!.......2007-10-12
As the prior reviewer indicated this item is living proof that everything that Ray Ferry touches seems to contract a case of irritable bowel syndrome hence my suggestion that this product would probably make great TP. To add insult to injury..Amazon is now " offering " this garbage for $100. despite the fact that I received it as a free incentive when I made the mistake of subscribing ( only one time ) to the " new " FM. Anyone who knows the true story of FM knows that this is NOT THE TRUE FM which was edited by 4E Ackerman in the '50s & 60s & was revived recently. Ray Ferry snatched the rights to FM from old 4E & 4E won the court case but the legal fees required him to sell his world famous Ackermansion. Outside of the fact that this one hundred dollar magazine has no redeeming features or value whatsoever...a true FM fan will insure that Ferry finally get his just deserts by not purchasing this printed TP.....
Poor imitation.......2004-01-25
I thought this was going to be the BEST of the Famous Monsters I read as a kid, but none of that classic material was included, and the imagination of former publisher James Warren and editor Forrest J Ackerman is sorely missed. This is just a re-hash of the few issues of the magazine published without them. The writing is a weak imitation of Ackerman's lively style, ripping off patented puns like "You Axed for It" and "Beast Wishes". Even the cover is a 5th rate copy of a painting from the original magazine. I hear the current publisher of this volume lost a lawsuit for stealing Ackerman's nom de plume, "Dr. Acula". The Famous Monsters of the '50s and '60s was a cool phenomenon once, but the '90s incarnation is a pointless anachronism, since only nostalgic baby-boomers like myself are interested, and there are so many superior efforts dealing with the subject on the market now. Famous Monsters without Forry Ackerman is like a Beatles reunion without John, Paul, George, or Ringo.
Nice Packaging of Recycled Material.......2001-07-24
For horror fans who have to have all issues for their collections, this one will pass as a "good" one to have, but it ain't great. Regular FMOF subscribers already have seen most, if not all, of what's between the pages. I could live without it.
A BEAST SELLER.......2001-06-30
Some reviewers of this issue cry that former editor FJ Ackerman isn't included in it. Why should he be? This is a collection of great features from the new FM that Mr. Ackerman had nothing to do with. He quit the magazine in 1995 and the features in THE BEST OF FM, VOL #1 have nothing to do with him. Ackerman fans should go read old back issues. If they don't like the new FM, nobody is forcing them to read it. But discriminating fans of classic horror films will find this collection to be an outstanding, entertaining and informative read.

Book Description
Artist/writer Bill Bronson takes a mockin' and rockin' look at horror and grrl-power, and comes up with a crunchy mix of tricks and treats he calls "Chicks & Monsters." A multi-flavored package of cruel-to-be-cool comics and painfully delightful drawings, Bronson's work can be described as a kind of punk Charles Addams for the new millennium. Stories include The Postmortem Girls in "The Band Practice that Woke the Dead," The Mothball Jawbreaker Gang in "Clean Up on Aisle 666," and The South Side Saints doing battle with rowdy hobgoblins who don't know when to leave! All this and pages of pin-ups, sketches, and other decidedly demented and morbidly fascinating artwork! For cute witches, hot vampire chicks, and girl golems with crushes on undead - where else would you go for one-stop shopping?
Customer Reviews:
feel cheated.......2006-03-18
I expected more of the artwork from this mag. I enjoyed the characters. The costumes where wonderful. But the artwork, was nothing but sketches. It looked like he found a bunch of sketches lying around and made a story out of them. The pictures in between the stories where great. I wonder why he didn't actually take the time to draw pictures for the stories instead of using the sketches. I am pretty dissapointed in this book and artist. I hope he does better with the artwork next time. If I am able to peek inside the book next time and see actual artwork, I would by the book. "I got punked"
