Entertaining but delivers a bad message.......2007-10-15

I've enjoyed every book in this series so far and will continue to read to the end, but this book changed my mind about ever sharing this series with my daughters. Mia is as sweet, innocent and neurotic as ever. In this book she acknowledges a bit more selfishness than usual (she hopes to prevent Michael from pursuing the development of his life-saving invention since it would entail him moving to Japan for over a year) but, considering her young age (16) and her general insecurity this is forgivable. What appalled me was not any diminishment in the quality of writing but in the attitude toward sexual relationships that is revealed in this episode.

Mia's attitude has been that sex is something special, to be shared with someone you love. Sex for the first time - losing your virginity - is especially important to her. She wants it to be not only to the person who will hopefully be her life-long love, but she wants the event, itself, to be extra-special. NOTE: even romantic Mia thinks saving oneself for marriage is ridiculous. Her idea of a "special" night goes no further than the Prom.

The response to this attitude from most of her friends, her boyfriend and every responsible adult in this story (and even Grandmere) is that Mia's attitude is wrong. It is, at best, a sign of her immaturity and at worse a "judgmental" attitude that is crazy and that puts into jeopardy an otherwise healthy, happy, potentially life-long romance.

[Spoiler Alert]

It turns out that Mia's boyfriend, Michael, lost his virginity before he even started dating Mia (2 years before this episode). He lost it to a girl whom he told Mia he was not even dating. He insists this wasn't a lie since he and this other girl weren't going out, they were only having sex. They had no special feelings for each other at all and, in fact, the other girl had a boyfriend (not Michal) at the time. Michael sees nothing at all wrong with this and can't understand why Mia gets upset. It turns out that no one else in Mia's world - especially not the "wise" adults she turns to for advice - see anything much wrong with Michael's attitude - only with Mia's. It is clear by the end of this book (which leaves you on a hook, awaiting the next book) that Mia's "foolish, juvenile" romanticism has possibly destroyed this important and, supposedly, healthy love relationship in her young life.

What is never asked is this: has Michael really been faithful to Mia all these years? Mia still assumes he has but, given Michael's cavalier attitude toward sex and the fact that he saw nothing wrong with his first girl cheating on her boyfriend to do him, she actually has no reason to trust him. She doesn't think to ask and it is clear he won't tell if not asked directly with every possible word of the question clearly defined. Would Michael even think he had done anything wrong if he had cheated on Mia, as long as he didn't fall in love with anyone else while they were dating? Furthermore, given their upcoming separation (with him moving to Japan for over a year) is there any reason at all for him to even consider staying faithful to her, even if they remain "a couple" over the distance?

Instead of asking these legitimate questions, the conflict evolves to encourage the reader to want Mia to throw off her juvenile fantasies and beg Michael's forgiveness for her overreaction to his expression of reasonable, modern attitudes. After all, he has done more than enough by being patient with her silly values all these years. Isn't it time she grew up?

Personally, I find myself regretting that these books are so well-written and enjoyable. Two generations of Americans have already suffered much unhappiness directly traceable to the attitudes and morals encouraged by this book. I would hate to see a third generation encouraged to repeat the same disastrous mistakes.

At last! [spoiler alert] .......2007-09-07

Okay, maybe I'm not the typical reader of this book, seeing that I have a child around Mia's age, but I am a high school librarian and I enjoy reading the books that I order for the students to read.

For seven books (and several novellas) we have listened to Mia blather on about Michael and school and Michael and her grandmother and Michael and ... well, you get the picture. With all of those adolescent hormones, she doesn't see that she needs to give Michael some space, as he is emotionally and intellectually several years ahead of her. She doesn't care to listen to the adult figures in her life (now THAT'S realistic!) on just about any serious matter, including this one.

Now she freaks out because she faces a year's separation (and despite what she believes, I am sure that her father would have flown her over at least once during that year) and plans to manipulate Michael with sex. (Not her finest plan. Can we all say "statutory rape"?) However, everything crashes around her feet when she discovers that Michael has a different viewpoint on intimacy. Not too surprising to adults, who realize that people reared with different cultural/religious beliefs are bound to have conflicts, some of which are un-work-out-able.

I remember someone telling me that her first husband was selected when infatuation was mistaken for love and the second (the one she stayed married to) was chosen when liking turned into love. We have seen J.P. from the very first book and he has gradually developed as a friend. It would be nice if this series developed to show that Mia chooses a relationship based upon a solid foundation, but I doubt that is Ms. Cabot's plan. Whatever she chooses, the next book can be an opportunity for Mia to mature without always wondering "what will Michael think about this?" My students (and I) eagerly await the next volume.

i've loved the princess diaries series since book one. this book was very depressing. i'm just a hopeless romantic and this book spoiled everything.

I have been a fan of ALL the other Princess Diaries books. I have read many of them twice! This one was so boring! I should have listened to the negative reviews and passed on this one. Save your money and check this one out at the library if you must read it!

A Princess book with an actual conflict - too bad it goes unresolved..........2007-07-08

Finally, in the eighth book of a ten-book series, Mia Thermopolis again gets a honest-to-goodness conflict. It's been a long, long time. Mia's has dealt with plenty of anxieties, but most of them have been minor problems she's blown all out of proportion. Not since she learned she's a princess and had her whole future (and present) made over accordingly has she had to grapple with a real life-changing problem.

In Princess on the Brink Mia's boyfriend, Michael Moscovitz, tells her that he has the opportunity of a lifetime. He intends to go to Japan to produce a working model of the robotic arm he invented for a knife-free surgical procedure. Michael wants to prove - to the world and Mia's grandmother - that he's worthy of being a princess's intended. But that will require a long stay abroad. Mia panicks at the idea of being sans Michael for so long and comes up with the bright idea of tossing her virginity to him as an incentive to stay stateside.

The story takes place over a very short period, less than a week, from the time Michael tells Mia he's going to Japan to the time he actually leaves. During this period Mia also starts school so she's also worrying about her Chemisty and Pre-calculus classes and the pressure Lilly is again asserting on her to be in student government. She also has a creative writing teacher who fails to appreciate Mia's innate creativity and style (i.e., Mia's failure to follow assignment directions).

I LOVED this series when it first debuted, but the premise here is growing pretty thin. Mia's high-school worries and escapades simply cannot support the weight of so many books (8 so far and a number of shorter half-books). Her constant pop culture references, so cute and endearing at first, have also grown annoying. Or perhaps it's me - I've unplugged myself from cable and magazines and can't really relate to much of what Mia throws out there to explain her own worldview and perspective.

Also annoying is Mia's constant reference to her "Precious Gift" - that's her virginity to you and me. She gets this term from a True-Love-Waits-type book her friend Tina leant her. It's typical of Mia to over-romanticize anything, but she uses the term so frequently it deserves its own acronym - PG - if only to spare trees. Mia's willingness to set aside her previous sexual timeline in order to manipulate Michael tells a great deal about where she is in her personal development. What's best for Michael and the relationship in general is the last thing on her mind. This is typical teenage behavior, but Mia has never seemed so Machiavellian (albeit clumsily so) as she does here.

Many of the recurring characters are beginning to seem like cardboard cutouts of themselves marching around Mia. Lilly, in particular, seems less like a real person and more like a generic-but-cruel blowhard. Why Mia is still friends with her is beyond understanding. Of course, Mia is clueless as to the motivations of most of the people surrounding her. Watching both Kenny Showalter and J.P. zero in for the kill when they learn of Michael's departure is painful to read - Mia is so oblivious.

The book ends with everything about as unresolved as it can be. One of the series's underlying conflicts - how Mia will deal with the difference in maturity, particularly sexual maturity, between herself and Michael - finally comes to a head here, and Mia handles it in the most immature way possible, screwing up a number of her relationships in the process. Getting Michael out of the picture temporarily might have been a good idea a few books ago, but now it just seems ill-timed. The next book will no doubt be concerned with Mia's rebound, and then the last book with their reunion. That may be romantic in the final pages, but is Cabot going to shove two school years into two books? When it's taken 8 books to get to the beginning of Mia's junior year of high school? At this point, given Mia's shallow self-absorption, I think Michael would be within his rights to cut and run. And that's a painful thing for me to write about a series I once enjoyed so much.

Another Great Royal Diaries Book. .......2007-04-29

This royal diaries book starts out in Vienna, Austria January 1, 1769. The book continues while Marie Antoina (Marie Antoinette) goes from an Archduchess in Austria to a Dauphine in France. Marie Antoina becomes Marie Antoinette when she marries Louis Auguste. This book kept me entertained from the first page. When Marie Antoinette first arrives in France she is told to leave everthing Austrian behind and she feels alone. She encounters Madame du Barry, King Louis XV's mistress and ends when she makes up her mind to talk to du Barry after ignoring her for a while in the book. The Epilogue finishes up Marie Antoinette's life in a few pages and a brief description. A Historical Note explains how the world was changing and calling for revolution. A family tree that includes the Habsburg-Bourbon family tree with descriptions of Marie Antoinette's parents, husband and children. There are pictures in the last pages too of Marie Antoina, Antoina's mother, Antoina and her children, castles, and du Barry. There is also 2 and a half pages about the author.

This book was written based off of the diary of Marie Antoinette. When she is given a diary, she doesn't know at first what to write in it. She just writes her daily chores down & what she's done that day. She is born as the daughter of Empress Maria Theresa as Maria Antonia. Her mother is a very strict person who likes things done her own way. As custom, Maria Antonia is 13 & awaiting to find out who she will marry. Her mother picks out her husband just as she had done for her 3 sisters before her. She is only allowed to marry royalty because her mother needs allies for Austria. Years before, a ruler from another country had seized power of land that had belonged to her family. Ever since then, her mother had been making allies to take the land that she rightfully owned back. Unfortunately for her mother, Maria Antonia is a very headstrong young girl. She, also, knows what she wants & won't stop until she gets it. She obeys her mother but similtaneously listens to her wilder side. When she is told she is to marry the prince of France & live in Versailles, she isn't quite sure of what to think. She expects him to be a very handsome prince because his grandfather was. She spent months getting ready for the court of Versailles. The rules & manors are very different. This once independent girl has to learn how to let everyone else do everything for her. She isn't even allowed to give herself a bath. She doesn't adjust very well either. She believes that the manors are completely pointless. She doesn't understand why it is that in Versailles, belching at the table is considered polite. She also must change her name to Marie Antoinette to sound more French. The rules are almost opposite from her home. The worst part about her trip is that she cannot take anyone with her except for her dog. Her little dog will be her only companion as she leaves her home to join her awaiting new family & husband. When she gets there, Louis, the prince, is not exactly her idea of a fairytale prince. He's quite overweight, very shy, & has very bad acne on his face. For the first few weeks, he barely speaks to her. He is very sweet but she wants to get to know him better. She decides that if they are going to talk, she's going to have to start the conversations until he gets used to her better. She does, however, make friends with his aunts who aren't too much older than they are. She finds out a lot of important court information from them. Soon, she learns of a secret room in her apartments that had been used by previous princesses to get away from the constant media. When she wants time to herself, she can go in there. She talks to Louis about it & he has it decorated for her. Eventually, they warm up to each other & get to know each other better. When they don't share interests in a particular subject, they still support the other one & watch them anyways. They both teach each other a lot & do grow to like each other. Marie Antoinette knows that she will never truly love him but because they cannot divorse, they are at least good friends. They live a very good adolescent life together. The book stops a few years after their wedding. It doesn't go into her adult life at all but knowing about her childhood, I believe that she led a very independent lifestyle & probably changed some things about the Versailles manors when she became queen. This book was excellent & a good way to learn about history & a very important French ruler.

I personally thing that this was a very good book. I think it had a lot of good morals, and is apropriate for any age. I would recommend that you read it. I really like the main character i think she was an all around girl that just made a few bad choices. Anyway this is a great book and i think you should read it

This book ranks in the top 10 best historical fiction books I've ever read.
I love the way that the author, Kathryn Lasky, describes the incredibly easy and at the same time, incredibly difficult life the young woman Marie Antoinette.
She is beautiful, kind, and respectful. She starts out as a playful young girl who likes to joke and have fun with her family and friends, and she ends up a lovely lady.
Through out her life, she must overcome large obsticles, just as we do. As she does, she records this infromation in a small diary, which she receives from her tutor Abbé de Vermond.
I loved reading this book, I hope you do too.

A Marie Antoinette Book Review.......2006-12-08

Marie Antoinette by Kathryn Lasky is a historical fiction book about Marie, the princess of Austria. She gets married to the Prince of France, in order for her mother to expand her empire. At first she is very intimidated by gossiping royalties of France and the ugly prince she is married to. She is very fed up with France and the fact that she has no privacy. She escapes it all by writing in her journal. What will become of her, you ask? Well, you will just have to read this book for yourself to find out.
I very much liked this book because it helped me learn more about Marie Antoinette and what her life was like, while still keeping it fun to read. This book is best suited for pre-teen or teen readers because it is rather short. If it was a huge entire novel that had smaller writing and more facts, it would be meant for an adult. But nay, it is concise with large font letters. But it is still a good book to read if you want something short, yet historical. So go on, buy this book, and enjoy it like I did.

Princess Mia is back in this seventh installment of the popular PRINCESS DIARIES series, and, as usual, she's facing more problems than she knows what to do with. She's recently been elected student body president, which shouldn't really be that difficult a job since she's been in training to rule her own county someday, but it turns out that the student government is broke.

As if that weren't enough, Lilly starts a new literary magazine, calls it Fat Louie's Pink Butthole, and wants to publish Mia's story about "The Guy Who Hates It When They Put Corn in the Chili," a story that Mia would rather the entire student body not read.

Luckily (or not so luckily, depending on how you look at it), there's Grandmere to the rescue, and she's got a plan to help Mia's financial situation, social situation, and romantic situation all at once (not that Mia was aware she had a romantic "situation" in the first place). Unfortunately, Mia's romantic issues become all too clear when Michael decides to throw a party, and Mia starts freaking out because she's not a "party girl."

Fans of the previous PRINCESS DIARIES books won't want to miss this and will definitely enjoy reading along as Mia shares her crazy high school experiences through her journal. Meg Cabot's writing is light and breezy as always, and perfect for a lazy afternoon.

It may be some time before Princess Mia rules Genovia, but she is already getting a taste of governing as the President of the student body of her school. It is not going well. With three months left until the commencement, Mia is faced with bankruptcy and being unable to pay for the ceremony to be held at Lincoln Center. She does not want to resort to selling candles to make up the deficit, but that is a more appealing idea than having the valevictorian cause her bodily harm, if she can get past Lars, Mia's bodyguard. However, Grandmere has an idea. Unfortunately, when Grandmere or the princess' best friend, Lily, has an idea, Mia knows life is about to get "interesting," in the worst sense of the word. She's already dealing with a mountain of potential fall-out from Lilly's idea of creating a school-based literary journal whose sales will go toward meeting the budget. Now, Grandmere has the bright idea to put on a show. Her delivery of the suggesting somehow lacks the perkiness of Judy Garland telling Mickey Rooney that is what they ought to do. Now that the Queen Mother has spoken, so shall it be done. Being beaten senseless by an irate senior might be a better fate!

**** Mia's trials and tribulations continue to charm and amuse readers of all ages. Her angst has a ring of truth, even in the most ridiculous situations. Subtle in-jokes enhance the humor. If you need a laugh, or just to be reassured that things will get better, pick up a Princess story. ****

Princess Mia has a BIG problem. She is a fifteen-year-old girl living in a loft with her mom, stepdad, and baby brother in New York. She has triangular shaped short hair, a flat chest and a horrible social status. She is commonly called "freak". She goes to Albert Einstein High School and she's the student council president. She's heir to the throne of a small country called Genovia. Most people would think that being a princess is great. You'd get whatever you wanted. But that's so not true. Mia HATES being a princess. But the real problem is, she is completely broke. Or at least the student government of AEHS is broke. But her job as student council president is to keep track over everything. Unfortunately, the treasurer didn't really do a good job of saving money. So now, Mia is stuck trying to raise $5,728 for the Senior's Commencement Ceremony in June. Amber Cheeseman was going to kill her for losing all the money. Amber was the senior valedictorian and she was a black belt in karate. She was going to destroy Mia. So Mia has to star in her evil grandmother's musical or else her grandmother would tell Amber about the money problem. All the money raised from the musical would go towards the student council fund. And of course, Mia gets the lead. Could her life be any more difficult? Oh yeah, her boyfriend asked her to go to a COLLEGE party. Mia has never truly been to a college party before. She has no idea what to do. She tries to convince herself that she's a party girl but inside, she knows she isn't. She goes to seek advice on how to party like Paris Hilton. She tries hard to cheer herself up by making snacks for the party and dressing great. But when she does go to the party, she makes a complete fool out of herself. She has a beer and is completely ashamed of what happens. Mia thinks that her boyfriend, Michael, won't like for what she's done. Michael doesn't talk to Mia for days. But that's only because Michael's parents are splitting up and Michael is going through a bad time. But in the end, Michael forgives Mia for humiliating him and her, too. He explains to her what was wrong with his family and she really understands. Also, the student government makes enough money to fund the Senior's Commencement Ceremony and Amber doesn't know anything. Mia's grandmother gives her the check for $5,728. Even her grandmother says that Mia did an amazing job performing onstage. Mia is very pleased and happy. The musical turns out to be a hit! Her grandmother got off her case and Mia is finally free from it all. Now she doesn't have to worry about anything... for only a little while, though.

Just when you think Mia has done it all in the past six books Meg Cabot can prove you wrong! Mia finds herself in a stressful situation after she realizes she has spent all the money of the student government on High tech Recycling bins, Mia realizes she may end up going door to door to selling candles! THE PRINCESS OF GENOVIA Selling candles! Now that's a pretty picture! Grandmere decided to take it one step ahead and help Mia with her financial problem! Grandmere decided to embrace her creative side and give a chance to students of AHEAS a chance to shine!
To give the story a bit of spice Meg Cabot added another male in Mia's life that could stir some problems between her and Michael.
I have grown up reading this book and I still find it more interesting than the previous. If any fan has felt the books have began to get to repetitive this book will change your judgment, it's a well recommended book to any Meg Cabot fan.

A Forgotten Princess, A Queen Remembered.......2007-04-02

This book provides a unique look at what life may have been like for Elizabeth long before she was queen. It's easy for historical figures like Elizabeth to become so much larger than life that we forget they were real people, once. Elizabeth I recreates the emotions and thoughts of an adolescent girl in a way that shows that even a princess feels the universal emotions of loneliness, fear, and doubt.

Elizabeth I addresses two themes especially well: a daughter's longing for her father's affection, and a keen political mind's awareness of what it takes to be a successful ruler. Despite the fact that he had her mother beheaded, Elizabeth still loves her father and lives for the moments when he shows her favor. She is also an astute observer of the goings on in the world of royals and nobility, and early on comes to the realization that if she should become Queen, she must remain unmarried to retain her rule.

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves diaries and memoirs and takes an interest in the intricacies of queendom.

This is one of the first in the Royal Diary series that I have read and It is by far my favorite. It gives a great insight in to palace life and into the life of a teenager. It is a great read for all Princess. This book also includes historical facts and pictures about Elizibeth the 1st and her family. I recomend this book for anyone who likes princess, drama and historical fiction. This is one of my favorites in an intriuging and educational series

Ok Book.......2007-03-06

I really like to read books about people and what happened in their life. I have read alot of diaries from different people in different time periods. I found as I was reading that this book starts out medium exciting. In the middle of the book it gets boring and I just felt like starting over on a different book, but by the end of the book I just didn't want to put it down. I really didn't know anything about Elizabeth 1 but after reading this book I would be able to tell you good, bad, and interesting things that happened to her. I found as I read the book that she is like me in many ways. She likes to be outside on sunny days, be around people, be adventurous and free, and she loves animals. It made it easier to read the book because I could look for more ways she was alike me. Even though there were many interesting things that happened in this book I wouldn't recomend this book to a friend. I wasn't really excited to read the book and I went really slow through it.

Having taken English History in a British school many years ago, I found this book to be very enlightening in reference to this period of time. This book gives a great insight into the formation of the Elizabethian period.

I'm a fan of the Royal Diaries series, and this is the best of the books. I read this book over and over again. I liked the way that you could tell that the children, especially Anastasia and Alexei, grew up throughout the four years that the novel took place. I also liked the glimpse it gave of the lavish lifestyle that the Romanovs led, and I was extremely saddened to learn of their fate. I do not believe that Anna Anderson was really Anastasia. I think that Anastasia died along with her family that fateful day in July. But if you would like to read the Royal Diaries series, this is a great book to start off with.

I do not think this book is as good as I thought it would be. It is a very boring diary and definitely the Marie Antoinette book is better.I do not like the book about Cleopatra much either.The book on Anastasia just talks about when she goes to picnics and other palaces and when she went on yatchs. Since I heard so many good reviews on this book, I thought on buying this book, but it turnes out it is'nt that good. I cannot believe people actually like this book even. Anastasia led a boring life and she recorded it in her boring diary.

The book I read is called Dear Dumb Diary. The book was written by Jim Benton. I am going to give this book five stars because it was about a girls life and how she goes to school and the boy she likes, and the girl who thinks that she is perfect in every way. Anyway, the girl in this story Jamie who tells about what is happening in school and her life. Some of the characters in the story are Angelina, Sparky, the lunch lady, Henry, and Isabelle. Angelina is the popular girl who likes the same guy Jamie does. And boy does that make Jamie MAD!!! Angelina is very bossy and likes to torment Jamie in any way she can. Sparky is Jamie's dog. She tells him everything that happens in her life. The lunch lady is the lady who serves disgusting lunches, in the cafeteria. Henry is the guy I was telling you about. He's the guy who both Jamie and Angelina like! And last but not least Isabelle. Isabelle is the Jamie's best friend in the whole wide world. They do everything together. And in the story Jamie likes to call people names in her diary. She talk about them and what they look like and what she plans on doing to them in the future. And one off the parts is when Angelina get her........................oops!! Can't tell you! You have to read the book to find out.

My 10 year old daughter loves these books-- and absolutely laughs out loud when she reads them! They're not deep literature or a difficult read, but the author has a very funny way with words and really seems to know the pre-teen mind.

This was enough to keep me entertained for the moment inbetween novels, but if it would have been any longer I would have fallen asleep. I honestly don't get the point, except Lilly and Michael are coming to Genovia for Christmas and Lilly makes a mess and Mia is trying to find the perfect gift for Michael. Funny how it turns out...
I guess it was okay, but I really like the novels better than the novellas.

Am I the only one who is annoyed at how much time Carbot skipped. She went from May (Princess in Pink) to December! In the first 3 books Mia wrote everyday, but look at all the time she missed. This book is funny and well written though, but too short.

If anyone has actually read this book instead of skimming the front flap, they will be able to tell that Mia is acting incredibly shallow. I mean, in this book, she acts as if making out with her boyfriend is the most important thing on earth. Yuk.

This story about Elisabeth a.k.a. Sisi, is fascinating in every way possible.
It is about a girl visiting the Emperor to final marriage arrangements between the handsome Emperor and Sisi's sister, Helene. But Franz Joseph is delighted with beautiful Elisabeth, that he choses HER to be his wife, to his mother's dismay. To read more about Elisabeth's life with the Emperor(or about her long, aubourn hair) don't flip through the pages of this novel, but actually read it.

Interesting Take on the Life of an Empress.......2006-10-01

I liked this book. It was a lot of fun to read it. It is about a girl who will marry the Emperor of Austria and become the Empress. I liked how the book described the complex personality of Elisabeth. She likes animals (especially horses), but she also likes looking beautiful. I found her love for the Emperor believable. It was different from other books in the Royal Diaries series because most of the books gloss over girls wanting to look pretty. However, I thought it could have elaborated on her relationship with her mother more. The length was short, but it shouldn't stop you from reading this interesting book.

I have read this book only once, and will probubly not be reading it again. When i look to read these books, i look for books that are detailed, historicly correct, that are fun to read. Ive never heard of Elisabeth, and i do not think alot of people actually have. Well, heres my review -

Elisabeth is a 16 - year - old, soon to be bride. She is to be married to the 'Emperor'. Elisabeth and the 'Emperor' have absolutly nothing in common, except that the are both 'royalty'. Elisabeth is happy, though miserable, due to the fact that her soon - to - be 'mother - in - law' is an absolutly dreadful, controling person.

Some interesting facts about this book:

- - It says that Elisabeth's mother was setting up a meeting with her SISTER to see if the 'Emperor' is a suited match for Elisabeth, or Vice-Versa. (But that would mean they are cousins! omg!)

- - Elisabeth worries greatly how she looks, and dislikes her teeth because of their yellowish color.

- - Elisabeth had four children with the Emperor, and did not even participate in the naming of her first born! (because of her ignorant mother - in - law)

Overall, this book was decent. Nothing much interesting here, though. Some people may like this, but i did not. I would recomend the Royal Diary of Elizabeth I, it is very interesting, fun, and very historicly correct.

It said in the book that Elisabeth was murdered. I think it said she was 60 when she was murdered.

In this book we learn about Princess Elisabeth getting married to the emperor, and that's it. In the first few pages we find out that she is being forced to attend a ball in hopes that the emperor will fall in love with her sister, the plan backfires and the emperor asks her to marry him instead. The rest of the book is pretty much describing her getting prepared for her wedding.

An enjoyable, very short book. Does not take long to read at all. Mia as usual is totally insane, though she seems a bit stronger and willing to let some things just happen, than totally freaking out. She is stuck b/c Michael has already declared that he doesn't beleive in the propaganda for Valentine's day, but at the same time Mia really wants to give him one since it is their first one together.

Its funny and the ending is very sweet.

I really enjoyed this book, it follows the format of the traditional fractional princess diaries. Mia starts freaking when she finds out Michael hates Valentine's Day, complains to us and Tina for a few dozen pages, we get the usual rift between Lilly and Boris. At the end, everyone ends up happy on Valentine's Day, except Lana, who's mentioned in about 2 pages of this book. My one qualm is that Grandmere seems like a rich dotty old lady here, following the advice of an astrologist, rather than the snappy down-to-earth b**** we're all used to. But overall, it was a nice read, and a good way to pass the time waiting for PD IX.

I was so happy with this book. It was funny, entertaining, and ultimately a fast read. And I mean really fast... I don't even think this book took me an hour.
Overall, I think all of Meg's Princess Diarie's fans are going to love this book...

A quick, entertaining novel full of Cabot's signature wit.......2007-01-27

Mia is on her way to Genovia when she discovers a time travel ticket (well, actually her old journal) that takes her back to her very first Valentine's Day with Michael. What a find!

The first entry is for February 11th and tells how Mia met her grandmother's astrologist, Dr. Steve. Dr. Steve predicts grave danger plus a marriage proposal for Grandmere while Mia secretly scoffs. Mia doesn't believe it, yet she fears hearing her own forecast. Dr. Steve is insistent on telling it to her anyway. Mia is sure that Dr. Steve's predictions are foolishness; however, she is dismayed to hear him foretell that she will have a caboting relationship with a Leo. Mia screams that he can only be wrong since her beloved Michael is a Capricorn, and even suspects that Grandmere has put Dr. Steve up to his predictions simply because Grandmere doesn't like Michael.

When Mia mentions the forecast to her friend, Tina Hakim Baba, Tina urges Mia to fight for Michael. She's horrified that Mia and Michael have made no Valentine's Day plans and says that Dr. Steve's prediction will come true for sure if Mia doesn't plan the perfect romantic celebration.

When Mia casually brings up the holiday of romance with her best friend Lilly in front of Michael, she's dismayed to hear both of them diss it as a crass commercial ritual that they refuse to take part in. Tina insists that Mia must change Michael's mind about Valentine's Day by making it wonderful for him. The pressure is on, and Mia is in a quandary. How can she give a gift to someone without making it seem like she wants one in return? And how on earth can she give a Valentine's Day present to someone who hates the holiday?

Meanwhile, Grandmere is spending too much time with Dr. Steve. Mia is worried. Is Dr. Steve conning her royal grandmother?

This very quick read is pure enjoyment for Meg Cabot's many fans, with her signature rapid-fire wit and intriguing subplots. And, of course, it's full of heart. What could be more appropriate to the spirit of Valentine's Day?

I'm not going to go over the plot with you,I'm just here to tell you what I like and dislike. What I like? That's easy. Meg Cabot has once again outdone herself with this novel. Like I said, I'm not going to go over the plot, so you will have to read it or wonder for the rest of your life(okay, exaggeration). Dislikes: Just one. IT IS NINETY-SIX PAGES! I know, I know. Book 4 1/2 was fifty pages. What is the problem here? I'll tell you: This isn't a in-between book. It is supposed to be equivalent to 150 page novels previously written by Meg Cabot. Not to mention the fact that 4 1/2 had pretty much NO plot, whereas this one has a real setting, story, and more than ten characters.
That is all I have to say. Oh, yeah, one more thing:
READ THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This book was great! Meg Cabot really outdid herself. However, I wish it were longer. There is certainly enough plot, but only 96 pages? Really.
All in all, I would say it is a great book. You would be best getting it at a public library, because for $9, you only get 96 pages[hardcover].

Sweet, but too short.......2006-11-10

I won't delve into the plot, since many other reviewers have already done so. Instead, I'll say that Mia is progressively coming into her own, as this installment proves. She may be nervous addressing parents and school officials, but finally she has learned to emphatically lay down the law with her friends, something she certainly had trouble with at the beginning of this series. However, I found it frustrating that the book was over so quickly, especially at full cover price. I highly suggest you purchase a used copy if you don't have lots of money to burn.
