Book Description

The lonely old woman and the lonely old man decide to bake a girl this time, but when they open the oven, she runs off like her brother did. Never fear, this smart cookie has a plan to outfox the fox. Will it work? Let's just say that the ending is sweet for everyone.

“Ernst's familiar art, here placed against gingham-check backgrounds, utilizes the oversize format to best advantage, with large characters leaping out of their frames. On the cover, the candy-studded Gingerbread Girl with licorice-whip hair stares boldly out at readers. Kids won't be able to resist following her inside.”—Booklist

5 out of 5 stars Great new twist on an old story.......2007-07-19

The Gingerbread Girl is much smarter than her older brother. She's not about to end up as the fox's dessert. She fools everyone and comes out on top. A great twist to the old tale with a girl in charge!

5 out of 5 stars A hit with my three.......2007-06-24

I purchased this book to use with my kindergarten class, but I have shared it with the three cihldren I babysit for this summer (ages 4yrs.- boy, 6 and 8yrs.- girls). We have read this book A LOT. They have loved listening to it and have had a lot of discussion about comparisons to the Gingerread Boy. I llok forward to sharing it with my class. It is a great story that the children love.

5 out of 5 stars great twist on a classic.......2007-06-21

found this book by chance at our local library, and my daughters (2 & 4) wouldn't let me return it. so i had to buy it. the artwork is great in the story, and we loved the refrain, "i'll run and i'll run with a leap and twirl." only line i don't read is one where the wolf refers to her as an "airhead." other than, it's my favorite book, too.

4 out of 5 stars Cute story; some negative language.......2007-06-18

My five-year old daughter LOVES this book. They read it in her kindergarten class and she has read it over and over again. I just wish it didn't have the words "dumb" and "airhead" in it.

5 out of 5 stars Empowering tale for Smart cookies! (Especially little GIRLS!).......2007-06-02

This was such a fun follow up to the tale of the doomed Gingerbread boy. It's about time someone outsmarted that darn fox. My girls giggled and loved the illustrations but the felt SO proud when in the end the little girl triumphed. What a fun retelling!!!

5 out of 5 stars Another great gingerbread book!.......2007-03-21

As a Kindergarten teacher, I am always looking for a new twist on an old story. One of the best ways to help children to start crafting their own stories is to have them use a character they already know and change the setting or other characters in the story to make it their own. This book is a great example of doing this. My class enjoyed the book. When I lent the book to another teacher, her children loved it so they were running around the yard calling Giddy up! as they chased each other. She told me that they didn't have that reaction to the original story!

Great twist on a classic tale. My class of first graders LOVED it!

5 out of 5 stars Imaginative retake on an old story! Fabulous illustrations!.......2006-12-03

This is a great book for the youngest readers! Your little ones will delight in the Gingerbread Cowboy's chase across the barren lands of the Old West as he runs to save his life. Many animals are after him but he manages to outwit them all, even the clever old coyote, with the help of the rancher's wife.

Kids will laugh when they hear the Gingerbread Cowboy chant, " ... You can't catch me, I'm the Gingerbread Man." They will certainly enjoy the colorful illustrations of the animals depicted against the contrasting, muted background of the Old West desert and mountains.

Hazel Rochman, BOOKLIST reviewer, describes this story best (see Editorial Reviews above): " ... universal trickster tale with a cowboy slant."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars excellent bread baking book.......2006-10-18

This is definitely the ultimate book for baking all sorts of bread meals. Corn bread, scones, gingerbread, pretty much ANYTHING you want to know about cooking bread can be found in this very convenient book. The book does a nice job of showing you how easy it is to cook anything related to bread. It's also a pretty good learning experience, personally.

3 out of 5 stars Quantity Over Quality.......2004-12-01

This a decent, but not outstanding collection of quick bread recipes. Having a complete assembly of recipes in one book is a great convenience. Normally, I have to flip through a number of cookbooks to get the quick bread I want, since each one has only a few such recipes. The recipes themselves, however, are pretty standard, and you probably already many similar recipes in the baking books you have on your bookshelf. I do recommend this one, but only because of the convenience of having all the quick bread recipes in one place. The main advantage is that when you are looking for a very good quick bread recipe, you only have to search through this book, rather than having a pile of a dozen or so baking books on your desk.

All of the recipes in the cornbread chapter have flour, rather than the genuine article that does not have flour. The muffin chapter was pretty pitiful, as was the coffee cakes. The pancake chapter would be more useful if the author described the character of the particular pancake (light and fluffy, thick and rich, thin and rubbery-in the good sense, spidery and lacy, etc.) rather than regale you with anecdotal stories. There are several rare and valuable crepe recipes, but the recipes for the fillings are below average. A significant minority of the recipes seems to be nothing more than manuscript padding; I am not convinced that the author actually tested all of the recipes (viz: the ones that add cooked rice, since they were either gritty or lumpy; the recipes for microwave fruit jam were laughable, not to mention dangerous). Most of the waffle recipes are the wierd ones requiring egg whites beaten to soft peaks. The author has also picked up the bad habit of adding whole grains and/or dried fruit to just about everything for a healthy and nutritious treat (derived from either "Recipe/Diet for a Small Planet", the worst cookbooks ever, or else British baking books).

The last chapter is a reasonably useful compendium of ingredients, techniques, and equipment. Some sort of table of contents of this chapter would have been useful. The sections on eggs, salt, sugar and oil are predominantly wrong. Several recipes call for beaten egg whites, but detailed instructions for doing so are not forthcoming.

It has chapters on: loaf breads, gingerbreads, cornbreads, coffee cakes, muffins, pancakes, crepes, waffles, popovers, dumplings, scones, and biscuits.

5 out of 5 stars The Bread Queen.......2002-09-19

I love this book because our family is a "Sunday Brunch" crowd. We make a brunch each and every Sunday and have a great time. Of course there is always a sweet bread/coffee cake and most of the time it comes from this book or the author's other book: Breakfast Breads - which I also highly recommend.

Who wouldn't want to wake up to the smell of homemade bread (even if it's quick bread) and fresh coffee?

I hope you enjoy it as much we do!

4 out of 5 stars Fast, simple and tasty breakfast goods.......2002-06-20

I am the same as Kelly. I borrow the book from the library and try a couple recipes to make sure it tastes good and then buy the book. This book offers alternatives to the recipes which I like. Sometimes you don't want to make the same thing over and over again although you like it the first time and the alternatives add a different twist. The cranberry scone was absolutely DELICIOUS!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Breakfast gets even better!!!.......2001-05-08

This is a great baking book! Wonderful waffle recipes, the Hungarian Sour Cream Coffee Cake is great (my sister ate 1/2 in one sitting!), my husband loved the Fresh Apple Coffee Cake. I can't wait to try the lemon-poppyseed-saffron bread! I always test-cook from the library's copy before I buy. This is a cookbook worth buying for my collection. I also like the troubleshooting section in the beginning of the book.

"I am the Gingerbread Baby,
Fresh from the pan.
If you want me,
Catch me if you can!"
That sassy cookie! When Matti opens the oven door just a little too soon, out pops a gingerbread baby instead of the gingerbread boy he was expecting. Eluding all efforts to catch him, the flat, becandied baby is chased around the village and into the countryside. He mercilessly taunts Matti's parents, a cat, the milk and cheese man, goats, villagers, a fox, and more. In a less traumatic twist on the classic Gingerbread Boy story, this Gingerbread Baby even outfoxes the fox. Sure he's bratty, but he doesn't deserve the gruesome end the Gingerbread Boy usually comes to. Matti makes sure this naughty but appealing little one ends up right where he belongs.

This fresh-baked version of the traditional nursery story is brought to you from the creative and award-winning ovens of Jan Brett. Best known for such favorites as The Mitten and The Hat, she has illustrated many other familiar folktales. Her intricately detailed paintings, with their pretty, illuminated borders, are a perfect fit for the Swiss mountainside setting of this cozy old tale. And don't miss the Gingerbread Baby plush! (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Remember how the Gingerbread Boy is eaten by the fox? Well, not this Gingerbread Baby in a delicious twist to a favorite old tale.

It all begins when Matti opens the oven too soon and out jumps a cheeky little Gingerbread Baby. He leads Matti's mother and father, the dog and the cat, and a whole colorful cast of characters on a rollicking chase through the village and into the forest, staying just out of reach, daring them to catch him all along the way.

But Matti's not with them. He's at home in the borders making what turns out to be a gingerbread house into which the Gingerbread Baby runs. Only Matti knows he is safely inside. And readers will too when they look under the lift-the-flap gingerbread house at the end of the story, and there he is!

5 out of 5 stars Gingerbread Baby HOT From The Oven by Josh W........2007-03-20

When a Gingerbread Boy is peeked at when not supposed to, he becomes Gingerbread Baby! This is the main idea of Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett. This story is about a boy named Matti in Switzerland. This is a great children's book. I strongly recommend the book.

A boy named Matti decides it's a perfect day for gingerbread. But, when his mother tells him not to peek, he does anyways. Then out pops ... not the Gingerbread Man but ... The Gingerbread Baby! The Ginger bread Baby runs away and everyone chases him. It's very funny.

I think that the Gingerbread Baby is the best character. He's the best character because he is my favorite character. The main characters are, Matti, The Gingerbread Baby, and the animals. The writing style is great. The story is very easy to read. It's a great book.

I really like the illustrations. They really tell the story. Some of the pictures are funny. The Gingerbread Baby even has his own little saying like the Gingerbread Man. One saying is "Catch me if you can!"

The story was great and funny. I really enjoyed the book. I really hope you like the book too. I recommend the book for grades k-5. This book can be for any age, boy or girl.

5 out of 5 stars Gingerbread Baby.......2006-10-13

Gingerbread Baby is written by Jan Brett. The genre is fiction. The two main characters are Matti and Gingerbread Baby.
Matti made a gingerbread baby that jumped outside and everybody chased after him. Matti wasn't chasing after the gingerbread baby because she was too busy inside making something. A fox jumped out almost getting the gingerbread baby but he was to fast. No one could catch him. Then he smelled something. You have to read this book to find out the rest!
I think this book is good, because it's funny. If you like adventure, you will like this book!

Product Description

The classic tale of the old couple, with no children of their own, who bake a gingerbread boy to keep them company. Just as the little old woman is about to take him from the oven, he slips away and runs out the door past a cow, a horse, a group of threshers, mowers, etc. All follow in hot pursuit until the gingerbread boy meets up with a wily fox, and ?at last and at last he went the way of every single gingerbread boy that ever came out of an oven . . . He was all gone!? A wonderfully frenetic cross-country chase is depicted in Galdone?s broadly humorous color wash drawings. Of the eight editions of this well-known story now in print, this hilarious version is the most delectable.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for kids.......2005-12-23

This is one of the great books for parents to get for their kids bookshelves. I've really enjoy reading this book when I was kid. It's about a childless old couple who got lonely and the old woman decide to bake herself a gingerbread boy, who ran away once done and kept on running from and cow and a horse, but only to end up getting outsmarted and eaten by the fox. A great classic tale and racy read. You even found yourself running along the gingerbread boy as you read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Classic tale.......2004-03-05

An old woman and an old man have no kids, so the old woman makes a gingerbread boy. When she opens the oven, the gingerbread boy jumps out and runs away. He gets chased by the old woman and old man, a cow, a horse, and some farmers out threshing. Eventually, a fox manages to catch the gingerbread boy through cunning, and the fox eats him up. Some kids may find the story quite scary, and may find the unhappy ending a bit disconcerting. But it's a classic tale and quite engaging. The book has about 1300 words.

This is another great addition to a collection of gingerbread stories. Nice regional slant enhances the story.

5 out of 5 stars Yummy!.......2002-11-10

I purchased this book for my three-year-old while in Nawlins in May 2002. What a joy! My daughter loves pushing the gingerbread boy cutout through each page into each new adventure. Unfortunately, with two young children my opportunities to head to New Orleans again in the near future are slim...
My only complaint about this book is that there is no addendum that provides the phonetics for proper Cajun pronunciation.

4 out of 5 stars Cajun culture comes to New England.......2000-04-16

I was fortunate that I could share the Cajun Gingergread Boy book with my kindergartners accompanied by an audio tape, the result of a large group of teachers sharing an Internet project based at ( ). We passed the book around the country with a taped reading by a real Louisiana teacher. She included a printed pronunciation guide for each receiving class to keep and refer to after the book left us for the next stop. Sharing the Cajun Gingerbread Boy book and comparing it to other versions was a wonderful way to learn about and be exposed to other cultures. Many of the teachers will be purchasing their own copies of the book and using it each year for Mardi Gras themes each year. I recommend the book for every kindergarten and primary classroom.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific variation of an old favorite!.......1998-11-04

We used "The Cajun Gingerbread Boy" in my son's kindergarten class in conjunction with many activites, for example, cooking, art and writing projects, based on the story. The children loved the delightful Monseur Crocodile, and loved being able to take the gingerbread boy piece from page to page. This is a great book to use with more traditional renditions of this story.

"I will be as wild as I wanna be."

After getting tossed from her posh boarding school, wild, willful, and coffee addicted Cyd Charisse returns to San Francisco to live with her parents. But there's no way Cyd can survive in her parents' pristine house. Lucky for Cyd she's got Gingerbread, her childhood rag doll and confidante, and her new surfer boyfriend.

When Cyd's rebelliousness gets out of hand, her parents ship her off to New York City to spend the summer with "Frank real-dad," her biological father. Trading in her parents for New York City grunge and getting to know her bio-dad and step-sibs is what Cyd has been waiting for her whole life. But summer in the city is not what Cyd expects -- and she's far from the daughter or sister that anyone could have imagined.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Gingerbread: Not the Food, the Novel.......2007-09-21

Rebellious. Social Outcast. Defiant. These are just a few words to explain Cyd Charisse, No not the dancer-actress, the unruly teen in Gingerbread. Author, Rachel Cohn, makes Cyd feel like your best friend and describes San Francisco as one of your top ten must visits. But at times, San Francesco seems too glamorous due to Cyd's high class family, to which she clearly doesn't belong.
Her best friend in the world is Gingerbread. The raggy doll she got from her father when she was young. Gingerbread is like a little person to Cyd. Cyd talks to Gingerbread and confines her deepest feelings in her, knowing she can't say anything. Gingerbread is Cyd's partner in crime and goes everywhere with Cyd.
Cyd's a down to earth girl living the high class life. Drugs, sex, and underage drinking, get her into trouble throughout her adolescence. All she wants is to be with her beloved boyfriend Shrimp. Shrimp is a "five-foot-five, surfer-shirt-wearin', baggy-jeans-slouchin', Pop Tart-eatin', spiked-hair-headed" guy that Cyd is head-over-heels for. Her parents aren't exactly thrilled to see them together, and as such, Shrimp is the reason Cyd gets sent to "bio-dad, Frank" in New York City. There she finds the one person who feels like she belongs, Danny. Danny is her gay half brother who owns the Village Idiots, a café and bakery. Cyd spends most of her time in New York with him. But Cyd makes more trouble in the Big Apple, particularly with the Latino limo driver, gets sent back to San Francisco.
My favorite seen in the book is when Cyd goes to a pub with Autumn, her bi-sexual friend, and gets Irish soccer players to buy them drinks. Cyd gets everything she wants, especially from the guys. With her long legs, black hair, and I don't care attitude, she ideal for any San Francisco guy. My favorite character is Sugar Pie, Cyd's best friend, psychic, and life coach. I like her because she is a cute old lady with a mean attitude. I love that this book is so care free, and easy to understand, plus I couldn't put it down. If I were grading this book I would give it an A because of the never ending drama, easy reading, and interesting characters.
I love Gingerbread, and I'm the type of person who despises reading. It's mostly for a teen girl, not saying guys won't like it too. Even if you're someone like me, who hates to read, try Gingerbread. It's an unforgettable novel that will change your perspective on life, relationships, and friends.

Close your eyes and think for a minute about the name Cyd Charisse. What comes to mind? Well the famous dancer and actress of course! Now close your eyes and try to picture a 16 year-old girl with the same name. What comes to mind now? Well, probably some over dramatic blonde girl who comes from a rich family, gets whatever she wants, and is most likely a good dancer. Right? Well think again because Cyd Charisse from the book "Gingerbread" by Rachel Cohn is the exact opposite. Cyd is a black wearing, family hating teenager with 4-inch black boots and raging hormones. And wherever there are raging hormones, relationships always follow. Justin, her ex-boyfriend who landed her on probation at a nursing home where she met Sugar Pie, and Shrimp who she thought was Mr. Right. Is he? Though what bothers her most is that she has a rich and famous father who lives in N.Y.C. along with an older stepbrother and stepsister from her father's other relationship by which Cyd has never met. Now that her mom and step-dad have decided that Cyd is ready to learn the truth about her father, they agree to send her to visit them. But how will the reunion go? Gingerbread, favorite doll and only memory of her father will help her through it all.... and Sugar Pie too.
Rachel Cohn is an amazing author with astounding voice that gives Cyd Charisse the sarcastic, realistic personality of an actual teenager! Along with amazing voice comes incredible and creative word choice that will keep you hooked until the last page.
I would recommend this book to ages 12-16 for enjoyment and age appropriate reasons. This book can also be very helpful because the situations in this book can, and really do happen.

4 out of 5 stars This book is GREAT for girls!!.......2007-02-20

This book is fiction, but uses a character that could be real. This book also puts a framiliar perspective on life today for most teenagers. Troughout this book there is a girl named Cyd Charisse who plays the main protagonist. Cyd's mother is married to her step-dad Sid and her real dad lives in New York which she refers to him as Frank-real-dad. She has only seen her real dad once in her life and when they saw eachother it was in an airport where her real dad bought her a doll that she named Gingerbread. She named the doll Gingerbread because when she saw her dad he brought really good gingerbread wiht him. This doll after it was given to her basically becomes her best friend throughout the whole story and talks, has feelings, and opinions on evreything according to Cyd. When Cyd gets in big trouble with her step-dad Sid and mother Nancy they call Cyd's real dad Frank adn ask if she can come there for a couple of weeks. At first when she is picked up by Frank's driver Luis, he thinks that there is such a resemblance between Frank and Cyd. So he thinks that Cyd is Frank's niece and not daugther. Also, right before she arrived Frank has just lost his wife and his other two kids have lost their mother. Cyd doesn't know much about her father and his kids when she arrives, but wants to learn lots about them. This book by Rachel Cohn is fiction, but has a real perspective so it makes me want to jump into her next book in this series.

5 out of 5 stars quirky, original voice.......2007-01-31

I read a lot of YA literature--often a book a day, often the ones to which this book has been compared. A lot of them are so bad that I can barely manage to finish reading them. When I first picked up *Gingerbread* and figured out the plotline (by my usual method of reading the end first) I thought it was going to be one of those "skim-and-toss" ones. But it wasn't. I savored it over a period of days because it was worth savoring--not for the plot, which others here have criticized, but for the engaging and original voice of the narrator. She is hilariously funny and compelling and credible, and if she comes across as whiney and complaining and even superficial, that's because she's been hurt a lot and has very well-developed (although not entirely effective) self-protection mechanisms. I even ended up appreciating the secondary characters and the plotline. Abortion is a very tough subject to handle in a way that recognizes pain without being judgmental or melodramatic, and *Gingerbread* manages it remarkably well. In fact, this book is very thought-provoking, without waving its arms around and yelling "look at me, I'm deep and serious." Highly recommended reading for fun that isn't mindless.

5 out of 5 stars Gingerbread.......2006-10-17

Overall, I'd say this was fun to read. Cyd may seem sarcastic and snobby but the way she talks makes everyone know she's really a good person. She's just got the rebel thing going on, since she doesn't like her parents much and she's always fantacizing about how things could be different and what could happen when she gets older.
Very entertaining and short. I am reading the sequel, Shrimp, right now!

5 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Return to Childhood.......2007-01-18

The book is wonderful. This was my favorite childhood story and it brought back many pleasant memories. My husband and I are enjoying the book as much as our daughter. She also really loves the book and requests that we read the book several times a week. The illustration is wonderful and enhances an already great story.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Classic.......2006-11-20

This is a beautiful book with the most amazing illustrations you will find anywhere! Illustrations make or break a book for me, and this one does not disappoint. My daughter is almost 3 and wants to hear this story over and over, and I love to read it to her. She knows the rhymes by heart and likes to chant along with me when I read.

VERY highly recommended!!

4 out of 5 stars Hidden message.......2004-04-28

"The Gingerbread Man" is a great story for young children. However this story also has many hidden themes that your child might pickup on while reading this tale. "The Gingerbread Man" supports the idea that women are mearly the creaters of life and house keepers, and warns young children of the consequences of being arrongant and disrespecting your maker. Even with these hidden themes any child should enjoy this story.

4 out of 5 stars fairy tales and popular culture.......2004-04-27

The story of "The Gingerbread Man" has for centuries enlightened the hearts of its young readers. It has helped to redefine the way that popular cuture work helps to shape an individual's way of interpreting the ideological work that the story portrays. That utopian feel to it; where people want to see the hero win in the end and come up on top.In fact the gingerbread man gets eaten in the end, which goes against that utopian type of fairy tale that the public genre tends to enjoy more. But for some reason this fairy tale has been one that against all odds, has remained popular, and entertaining and plain old FUN.Which is what the everyday reader wants to read, something that is fun and entertaining when it comes to fairy tales.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful version of the classic tale.......2003-09-30

Lovely illustrations and repeating, predictable text. The illustrations are "old fashioned" looking and were drawn in ink then colored with watercolors and gouache. A classic tale about a gingerbread cookie man that gets up and runs away when he is released from the oven and leads many on a long chase. My children want me to read this story over and over again! There are many versions of this story in print but we especially like this one. As a bonus, the recipe for gingerbread cookies is on the back cover.

4 out of 5 stars Musubi Man: Hawaii's Gingerbread Man.......2007-06-10

The depiction of the Hawaiian culture through the art is nice. The story
is unusual to say the least, and unless the children knew the story or poem of the traditional story of the Gingerbread Man, the children would not get
the humor perhaps. It is, however a story with a moral to it and for children
perhaps age 7 through 9, or 10, it could be enjoyed. The book arrived
promptly in excellent condition. B. Sahota

5 out of 5 stars Musubi Man.......2007-01-11

A very cute version of the Gingerbread Boy...great illustrations and language of the Hawaiian culture.

3 out of 5 stars Hard to follow.......2007-01-09

I am a kindergarten teacher and the book was way above my class level and the children did not respond well to the story. However, this book has great illustraions and a glossary of terms in the back.

5 out of 5 stars Teacher gives it an A+!.......2006-11-23

My Kindergarteners love this book! My city (Las Vegas)has a large Hawaiian population. I asked a parent to make a Musubi Man (using a gingerbread man cookie cutter as a guide)and we had great discussions about his ingredients (which my students were more familiar with than I was!)I'll use this book during every Gingerbread unit from now on.

5 out of 5 stars great book, lively text, fun illustrations.......2004-12-23

My kids, aged 6 and 10, and I have enjoyed this book for several years. The story is hilarious and clever without trying to be. Because it's a Hawaiian style re-telling of the gingerbread man, it's familiar, yet fresh and different. The illustrations are great and make the story come alive, but are also filled with enough wacky detail to make them enjoyable to look at again and again. My kids and I have read a lot of books together, most only once, but this one is so great we read it again and again.
