Hugely disappointed! It's a pamphlet!.......2007-10-12
Holy cow, it can't be stressed enough that this 'book' costs over a dollar a page! If you already know your open string chords and major/minor chords, major and minor scales, you know everything you could find in this pamphlet.
I wish I'd just set the money on fire, at least I'd have gotten something out of it.

This booklet (only 8 pages long) is ok for giving you some starting chords to play simple tunes with. In fact, there are only 3 pages of chords and 5 pages of information about guitar tuning, guitar fret notes, common chord combo's, and basic guitar positioning.
You can easily get this info on the internet. I'd suggest getting a more comprehensive book on chords or a guitar method book.

Recently got First Stage Guitar Chord Chart by Chris Lopez and Essentials by Bruce Arnold. I'm a weekend geetar picker just getting started. I'm mostly interested in learning chords and scales. I thought both books were good they both gave simple presentations of the most important chords and scales. Essentials has an interesting quark in that you can download videos and mp3 files that go with various parts of the book. I found the mp3 files to be very useful to jam over but I'm over here on a dial up connection so couldn't use the video stuff that much. One thing I did watch though was movies about common problems found with each chord. It showed me all the common problems people have when learning chords and I thought that was pretty cool. Ya really can't go wrong with either book though - they lay everything out very clearly and are enjoyable to work with.

I bought this as a gift for my husband, who said it is one of the best books that he has ever read. He even described a greater understanding of the psychology of golf that will make the playing of it more enjoyable for him. I have rarely seen him so enthusiastic over a book, but I would say that you'd have to be a golf fan to read it.
Entertaining mix of fiction and nonfiction.......2007-08-17
This book was truly enjoyable and very hard to put down. It is a page turner that yields valuable insight into the birth of golf in Scotland, England, and America. This book contains many valuable facts that may be unknown to the casual sports fan like myself. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an entertaining read on the beginnings of golf and the inspirational story of underdog Francis Ouimet.
However, this book contains a lot of fiction. The "states of mind" of Vardon, Ouimet, Ray, Lord Northcliffe, etc. are pure speculation. Frost has definitely opted for an overdramatization of the story to give it wide appeal (and movie appeal) so it is difficult at times to distinguish facts from fiction. Purists and true golf buffs might be annoyed by the blatant largesse of Frost's fiction.
Nevertheless, the book is an easy and enjoyable read.

I bought this book for my brother in law and he really doesn't read many books. He just usually reads the paper.
He open it up and read this book in one setting. He thought is was just about some person in past years and what his game was about. He found it informative entertaining at the same time. He has read this book at least 2 more times. If you love golf,
then you will love this book.
Not even a novice.......2007-07-06
I'm not a golfer. Not even a novice. The only golf experience I have is falling asleep on the couch as a little girl while my dad or grandpa watched yet another golf tournament. ChiChi Rodriguez was my favorite, and I am familiar with all the greats of the 1980s and a few of the ones from the 90s.
I started reading this book after watching the last quarter of the movie. I thought it would give me something to talk about with my dad. As it turned out, this was one of the most well-written biographies that I have ever read. It was captivating and extremely well written. Not only did I learn so much about golf, but also about the presidents at the time, the social climate, and even meteorology. Rather than being boring, the hole by hole commentary was actually fascinating! I still don't understand much about the different clubs, and I still don't know how to golf, but I have a greater appreciation for the sport that my father loves so much, and we DID have a great conversation about the book once I finished it. So, if you're not a golfer, but you want to be able to relate to the golfers in your life, I highly recommend that you read this fabulous book! I'm so glad I did!
Furthermore, I'd read ANYTHING written by Mark Frost!
A Great Historical Read.......2007-06-08
Mr. Frost has crafted a true story that is as American as apple pie; the story of a two men, Francis Ouimet and Harry Vardon, who against all odds showed an unswerving commitment to excellence in an endeavor that is fraught with the broken dreams of many people. I am a golfer and enjoyed the fact that the book is about a group of golfers at the turn of the 20th century and what "golf" was at that time. However, I think anybody would enjoy the story of Francis Ouimet's "David" to Harry Vardon's "Golaith".
In addition, Mr. Frost also provides an amazing amount of background material to provide a useful context for the back story.
All in all, a very enjoyable book.

Statistically, baseball back then couldn't be more at variance with the game now. Cy Young threw 511 career victories, and 750 complete games. In 1909, Ty Cobb led the majors both in batting average (.377) and home runs (9). Cobb's teammate Sam Crawford hit over 300 triples in his career.
What to make of such numbers? Lawrence S. Ritter's "The Glory Of Their Times" strips away the statistical confusion by getting to the heart of Major League Baseball's early days, the players themselves. An economics professor, Ritter invested his downtime from 1962-66 in interviewing elderly men, baseball players all who knew what it was like to face a Walter Johnson fastball, or have Ty Cobb slide into the base they were covering.
"People were more unique then, more unusual, more different from each other," says Davy Jones, who played on the Tigers with Cobb and Crawford. "Now people are all more or less alike, company men, security minded, conformity - that sort of stuff. In everything, not just baseball."
Transcriptions of Ritter's interviews with Jones and 21 other former players, including Crawford and two others then in the Hall of Fame, makes up the whole of "The Glory Of Their Times," published in 1966 and later extended with four more interviews in 1984. Nearly all the interviews offer both testimony and color for the game as it was then.
Bill Wambsganss tells us about his unassisted triple play in the 1920 World Series, and how Ring Lardner once used his last name to rhyme with "clam's chance" and "Ray Chapman's pants". Fred Snodgrass tells us about his famous muffed fly in the 1911 World Series, and how his New York Giants tried to psyche out the Philadelphia Athletics by sitting on the dugout bench, ostentatiously sharpening their spikes.
You hear so much about another famous World Series moment, the Merkle "boner" of 1908, that you feel like you were there on the field, too. There's a Rashomon-like quality to hearing various interviewees give their different takes on such things as the character of John McGraw and whether "Giant Killer" Harry Coveleski was run out of the league when he was caught chewing on bologna. (Snodgrass says so, while Harry's brother Stanley, a major-league pitcher himself, calls it "a lot of bull".
Not all the interviews are riveting. One wishes Ritter could have pushed some of the old players more, like the rumors that swirled around Smoky Joe Wood involving fixes. But allowing the subjects the reins probably drew more color out of them than a Grand Jury could have. I love how Crawford keeps telling Ritter he hasn't much time to talk, while giving Ritter one of the longest and most entertaining interviews in the book, describing how players would allow themselves to be rubbed down with "Go Fast," a noxious combination of Vaseline and Tabasco sauce that made them sweat like a sauna.
"I hope I haven't said anything I shouldn't," Crawford says at the end. "There are a lot of the old-timers still left,you know, and they're liable to say, 'That fathead, who the hell does he think he is, anyway, popping off like that!'"
If you like baseball even a little, you will enjoy "The Glory Of Their Times" quite a lot.

If you love the game of baseball as it once was and still should be this is a "must read"...some of the players interviewed by Ritter were unknown to me and I was fascinated to learn of their exploits...I ordered an additional three books and sent them to long time fans of the game...If I was a GM today in MLB I would have every member of the team read this book so that they might appreciate the game as it was in its infancy...the modern player (in most cases)doesn't realize how fortunate he is to wear a major league uniform and earn the money today for playing a "game"
Superb Baseball History.......2007-05-05
This superb oral history of baseball circa 1900-1920's contains many priceless tales. After Ty Cobb died in 1961 author Lawrence Ritter (1922-2004) took his tape recorder and traveled the USA to interview 22 surviving players from that remarkable era. We hear from top stars and established players, including Ed Roush, Sam Crawford, Smokey Joe Wood, Chief Meyers, Sam Jones, Bill Wambsganss, etc. Each player reminisces in his own way, recounting games, teammates, owners, managers, crowds, ballparks, etc. Some talk at length while others are briefer, but each is articulate and illuminating. I particularly liked Rube Marquard's memory of visiting the Chicago firehouse where he'd once slept as a transient, Stan Coveleski's view that baseball kept him from the coal mines, and the remembrances of Davy Jones and Jimmy Austin. It was also interesting to see how these players viewed superstars Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson, Ty Cobb, and Babe Ruth. This book provides readers with a superb sense of baseball before night games, air travel, TV, radio (except after 1922), farm systems, and in some cities, Sunday baseball.
Ritter set a standard with this superb oral history. The players interviewed here have all departed (the last in 1988), but their memories live on in this superb book. Fans might also enjoy BASEBALL WHEN THE GRASS WAS REAL, a similar effort about a later era by Donald Honig.

This book was a lot of fun to read, it showed a different side of the sport of baseball other than statistic. Told by the people themselves who played the game and in their own words. The author just let them go on for as long as they pleased with any stories they might have to tell. If you enjoy baseball history this is a must read.

How politics COULD be played........2007-08-29
Chris Mathews details how politics is played in the real world of modern day America. It's a sad tale of bribery and scandal and total abuse of the voters.
What Chris leaves out is a solution to our political problems. Everyone has some inkling of how bad it has gotten. What few people are capable of doing is cutting through the red tape of bureaucratic minds and coming up with a real solution.
Fortunately for us. The SOLUTION to all our problems can be solved by simply turning the voters loose on the Internet. In a kind of twist on realty, it would become impossible for the bribery specialists to bribe ALL the VOTERS ALL the time. That will allow for many good laws to hit the streets.
After reading Chris Mathews book, the reader wants to either leave the country for good or blow his brains out.
Have faith. There's hope. [...]

This book has some interesting aspects (chapters), but in all, Politics is not how much a person knows, how well a person performs his/her job, its all about who you know and who knows you.
Fascinating and Highly Useful!.......2007-01-15
"Hardball" uses numerous actual examples from well-known politicians (eg. LBJ, Tip O'Neill, Nixon) to clearly make sensible points such as "all politics are local," and getting people to support you by having them help you.
Examples: LBJ began life on Capitol Hill as secretary to a Texas Congressman. LBJ deliberately chose to live in a hotel that had the most congressional secretaries, and would shower and brush his teeth several times a day in the communal bathroom as a means of meeting others. Within three months LBJ was elected Speaker of the "little Congress." Three years after becoming a Senator he had risen to the #1 Democrat position in the Senate. Prior to taking office as a Senator his first act in Washington was to interview for two hours the page who answered phones in the Democratic cloakroom - LBJ wanted to know which Senators worked hard, their interests, schedules, and strengths and weaknesses, as well as how to get things done, the best committees to get assigned to, etc.
Governor Carter called all the Democrat candidates who lost in '74, recognizing that they would be looking for the next place to work. In addition he would stay at their homes when campaigning, building closer relationships. (Carter's mistake, per Matthews, was to campaign against Washington insiders, and then ignore them after election. Reagan used the same campaign ploy, but carefully shmoozed all he could after his election.)
Throughout "Hardball," Matthews is also supporting ethics in politics - I wish current politicians would also read and adhere to it. (The term "Hardball" originated with President Nixon - he described Speaker O'Neill as playing only "hardball."

My Favorite Cozy Mystery Series!.......2006-08-10
In the 6th book in The Cat Who...series, James Qwilleran aka "Qwill", is just settling in to his new life as a millionaire in Pickaxe City (400 miles north of everywhere). He has moved his two beautiful Siamese cats (KoKo and Yum Yum) into the old Klingenschoen mansion and is settling in for a five year stay to fulfill the requirements of Aunt Fanny's will.
As the book begins, Qwill is lying in a hospital bed, suffering from amnesia caused by a bicycle accident. His old friend, Arch Riker, flies into town to assist Qwill in regaining his memory, and succeeds in bringing Qwill out of his fog. While beginning to heal, Qwill starts to have vivid dreams of the moments leading up to the mishap, and eventually remembers that it was no accident...a truck had purposefully run him off the road! While trying to piece together who may have meant to harm him, Qwill begins some renovations to his new home. During his explorations of the mansion, Qwill stumbles across the room of a former employee, Daisy. Her room was completely painted with a graffiti style mural of daisies, and it arouses Qwill's keen curiosity. He begins to ask questions about the former employee of Fanny, and finds that Daisy disappeared rather abruptly. And when everyone that Qwilleran speaks to about her begins to have "accidents", he becomes suspicious that someone will kill to keep Daisy hidden forever.
This is my favorite cozy mystery series! I had read all of the books in the past, and wanted to read them again for a second time. This time around, I have chosen to listen to them on CD, as I love the voice of George Guidall. I am happily rediscovering how Qwill became a resident of Moose County, and how many of the series regulars join him from "down below". In this installment, Qwill hires Iris Cobb as his house manager. She cooks for him (and the cats), and is in charge of cataloging all of the antiques in the old mansion. For those that have not read the series, I do recommend reading the first several first. Many others can be intermixed, but this book offers good insight as to how Qwill became associated with Moose County. This is a great series by my favorite author!
The first book in the series is called "The Cat who Could Read Backwards". Enjoy!
The Cats, The Mailbox, and the Missing Maid.......2005-10-12
This is number six in Lilian Braun's long running 'The Cat Who' series and marks the beginning of Jim Qwilleran's transplantation to the far northern town of Pickaxe. Qwilleran has managed to become the heir of the community's wealthiest resident and must stay in Pickaxe for five years in order to inherit. As we all know now, he lasted a lot more than five years, and may still be north of everywhere enjoying the foibles and gossip that play such an important part of the world's coziest cozies.
Qwill has just moved into the Klingenshoen mansion with his two Siamese cats - Yum Yum the delectable and arch-detective Koko. Koko, through various manipulations of his owner's behavior, manages to arouse Qwill's curiosity about the disappearance of a housemaid a few years previously. In the process of investigating, the newspaperman introduces us to many of Pickaxes residents for the very first time. When he isn't being his by trucks, that is. It is interesting in retrospect to meet these characters again, who often started out one way and then became something else as Braun added layer after layer to her confection of characters and mysteries (and cats).
I can only read so many of these in rapid succession before I have to stop. Lilian Braun has a tendency to let her characters run in a groove with very little development over a number of volumes. She makes up for this by using Qwilleran to create witty dialogue, but there are only so many Pickaxe witticisms that one can read before feeling a desire for something with a bit more meat to it. This volume is a change of pace (if you've been reading in sequence). There's a bit less sarcasm and a bit more story and that makes this one of the best of her early books.
Don't look for a complicated mystery here. Braun's villains tend to be obvious, and more often than not the means are just as visible. You read these tales for lightweight enjoyment and the zany characters that chitchat their way through the pages. And, of course, you read them because you can't resist Qwill's owners, the Siamese masterminds.
Pretty Good Listening.......2005-10-08
At first when I started to hear the tapes, I was thinking that the narrator's voice was not dynamic enough. But by the middle of the first tape, I was ok with it. I've just gotten so tired of listening to Los Angeles radio stations in the car (we sit in traffic a lot out here) that I thought it would be nice to be entertained by something I really love. I was glad I did. Even if you've read the books in the past, it's fun to let the narrator do the reading for you. AND... something I thought was neat and that made me laugh was... when the narrator would be talking about Koko and Yumyum and a noise they were making, he would sound EXACTLY like my own Siamese cat. So it made it funny, because I knew exactly the "language" he was referring to. (He must have studied Siamese cats before attempting this narration!)
Anyway, I will probably buy more "Cat Who" books on tape. I don't anticipate L.A. traffic to be letting up anytime soon. And for some strange reason, listening to it in the car makes me feel like my own cat is in there with me. I say if you live in a city with heavy traffic... buy the tapes!
The Cat Who Played Post Office........2005-09-30
These are great stories Lillian Jackson Braun does a wonderful job of writing. I hope to one day have all the Audio Tapes in the series. Amazon.com is a great company to do bussiness with.
Koko Plays Beethoven.......2005-04-25
Lillian Jackson Braun opens this, her sixth cat mystery with Jim Qwilleran waking up in a hospital bed and not knowing who or where he is. It seems that he had been run off of the road by a truck as he bicycled on Ittibittiwassee Road. As he tries to regain his memory the reader is led along with him while he thinks back on events leading up to his accident. Most of these events involve the perplexing disappearance of one Daisy Mull who had been employed by Qwilleran's "Aunt Fanny." Once he is home from the hospital things begin to happen at a more rapid pace and a mystery that no one in Moose County had thought about all that much ends up bringing down some of Pickax City's leading citizens and leads to more deaths. Had Qwilleran paid attention to Koko's clues a little earlier some of this mayhem might have been avoided but the Siamese wonder can't seem to make his human friend understand. Koko finally gets so disgusted with Qwilleran that he refuses to have anything to do with him.
Braun also uses this book to set up Qwilleran's new life in Moose County. Arch Riker comes up from Down Below for a visit and hints that he might just like to make the move to Pickax City himself and Mrs. Iris Cobb does make the move and becomes Qwilleran's housekeeper, cook and the curator of his newly acquired house full of antiques. Ever the ladies man, our hero has hooked up with the lovely green-eyed Dr. Melinda Goodwinter and the relationship has blossomed since it began in the last book. He even begins to hint at a marriage. He also makes the acquaintance of Amanda Goodwinter who seems to be a perfect match for the newly divorced Arch Riker.
There are a few more twists and turns in this story than in some of the previous books but once again the mystery is not the main attraction of the book. Braun's talent for creating memorable characters and settings is very much in evidence in this book and she appears to have even created a man for Iris Cobb. Just Like Iris' first husband, nobody can stand this guy either. As usual, the cats steal the show as they march together in a dinner line and wait impatiently for the mail to come through the slot so that they can dive in the pile. And once again the cats save Qwilleran's life. This time it is Koko that comes to the rescue at the end of this highly enjoyable and entertaining book.

I've just received it and only just started reading it. So far I agree with all the other reviewers that this is an extraordinary and landmark piece of investigative journalism. Looking back, in 2007, on the history of the epidemic it very moving to see the earliest medical struggles to identify the disease, the bizarre historical melding of the triumph of conservatism in politics and the emergence of the 'gay disease' in the early 1980s. Given the subsequent explosion of the disease in the developing world way beyond the confines of the NY and San Francisco urban gay scenes, it is humbling and horrifying to revisit the first awakening of humanity to the enormity of the pandemic. You don't even have to be much interested in the illness or the gay liberation movement to be astounded by the story.
A Must Read.......2007-10-15
I bought this book on sale because I saw the made for TV movie many years ago. The movie wasn't that great, but the book is compelling and addictive and infinately tragic. It's a monster of a read and the many historical characters listed are difficult to track. However, it is now one of my all time favorite books.

I read this book in 1991 after caring for a brother who died from AIDS. When he was alive and we were together we didn't know a thing about this virus except what it was doing to our lives. About five years after his time was up a friend gave me a copy of The Band Played On. It changed my life forever. This book might be the most important, profound and historical piece of journalism written in our time. This book should be required reading for future generations. Tracing the onslaught of the virus from patient zero to Rock Hudson. Randy Shilts leaves no one unscathed in our failed immediate response to the greatest health risk of our lifetime. There's blame and accountability for everyone politicians, gay community, doctors, society but this book is not about blame and pointing fingers. It is ultimately about a society facing it's ugly little secrets and coming to grips about what seperates us is maybe not as important as what unites us. If and when we ever reach the top of the mountain and can look down at what this virus has wrought on us and we can confidently say 'never again', each man and woman will have to look at their own soul's and search inside of themselves for the answer to the following question. Did I do enough during the greatest health plague of our times to make a difference? Randy Shilts certainly has by writing the most detailed, historical look at the early days of the AIDS crisis. By reading this book I was inspired to do my share. God bless us.
magnificent and riveting.......2007-02-07
I read this as background for a thesis paper on journalism on HIV; I didn't realize quite what I was getting into with this one.
It may be the greatest non ficton books I've ever read, an utterly moving and compelling account of the epidemic and response. Shilts makes a high drama out of it; everything from the opening quote and the fonts makes the book as tragically poetic as it is informative and shocking.
Based on my work, I'd say it's also really a gold standard for journalism on HIV. He may have his personal feelings about it, but all they inspired him to do is question authority and delve deeper. He's very scrupulous about his sources and his research.
If you only ever read one book on the HIV epidemic, make it this one.

What Is It About?
This is Tariq's version of the Art of Mackin for Women. It promises to give women advice about men, dating, and relationships.
What Did I Get Out Of It?
I learned what king flex has to say about dating and seduction and got to hear what he advises women to do.
The Good News
The book is excellent and does deliver. It spells out the problems with men, the problems with women, what women really want, and why they think they want what they say they want. It also details the different type of males / females that exist in the dating world. The book is basically a hand book on dating and relationships and should be required reading for all women and most men.
The Bad News
There is relatively little bad news concerning this book. It is a bit short and I leisurely read it over the course of a weekend but, I consider that a good thing. Tariq is short and to the point and doesn't attempt to sugar coat things or pander to women with this book.
The Bottom Line
Any aspiring Mack man or women should have this book. It breaks down women and men and will help both parties do better with the opposite sex.

While I understand the basis to his philosophy, I feel that in repeating the stereotypes he perpetuates negativity sub-consciously. The laws of yesterday are not the same today. While he gives an overall view there is little uplifting and solution based strategy offered in this book. Does every group have it's faults? Yes, but if you have so much knowledge why not churn out something of higher value. Overall- smart brother, but I think he (and we) can do better.
Refreshing look at men and women.......2007-07-27
This book is a straight-forward and honest approach to man-woman relationships. The author writes in a friendly and frank manner. These words of wisdom are offered in a clear, thoughtful, and real form.
"The word game in strict terms simply means intelligence, hustle, and common sense. And having game means being knowledgable in every endeavor you choose to engage in." This book helps a female who makes bad choices in men, become a sophisticated, interesting, and confident woman who is comfortable with herself.
The reader is offered ten "Play or Be Played" tips, and also is given ten ways a woman can improve herself-in the form of game tips.
My favorite chapter dealt with the types of men:
-player
-professional
-pushover
-parolee
-the urban renaissance man
It was so interesting to find out about the different types of men, and to be made aware of their qualities.
The types of women are also displayed. Tips are also offered for a woman to improve her personality.
This book/guide applies to all aspects of life. It was entertaining and educational.

IF YOU WANT TO BE UP ON GAME READ THIS.......2007-06-01
This book broke the laws of physics down. K-Flex begins by letting you know that anything y0u do in life will fail or succeed depending on your game. He is not telling us ladies to play on guys, but just letting us know how guys think and how to overide their plan to get in our panties.
K-Flex goes on to let the ladies know how to up your game so you can be that girl that every every guy wants.
On top of all that he asks that you be real with yourself and tell YOURSELF (not others) what your true agenda is with your relationship. Basically he's saying that if your a gold digger then admit it to yourself, if your a ho admit it to yourself... & so on.
He might be an "ex-pimp" but he's still a misogynist and sexist.......2007-04-06
Do not buy this book unless you want to be insulted. This book is based on the baseless opinions, ridiculous generalities and the WORST of gender stereotypes. He argues that "women are not born to be leaders" and "women are emotional thinkers." This book is inane, illogical and downright offensive to any women or girls who respect themselves. Quite frankly, I am angered that anyone even published this book.

An expert story-teller, Lilian Jackson Braun pulls the reader into her Cat Who stories with the finese of Jim Qwilleran's two feline companions Koko and Yum Yum. Each story weaves mystery with deftly portrayed characters and cleverly detailed plots. No cardboard characters or loose ends in these books. Qwilleran is a reporter with a luxuriant mustache that frequently signals him when something peculiar is about to impact those around him. Murder, mystery, lies -- Qwilleran's sidekick Koko is there to help him solve all the riddles. (Yum Yum helps, too, but she often prefers to watch the two males bend their minds to the puzzles while she stalks bright shiny objects or flirts with Qwilleran's guests.) Any Cat Who book is a delight. And, best yet, it's not necessary to read them in order.

Lilian Jackson Braun's mystery series of "The Cat Who..." books are definately the cats meow, and a must read of any cat and mystery lover! This is a compilation of three of the early books from "The Cat Who" series. They are fast reads, the type of books that one can not put down! One thing I like about this series is that they focus on the same group of characters, which lends continuatity from one book to the next.
In "The Cat Who Saw Red" reporter Jim Qwilleran is given an assignment to work on a food column. While working on this assignment, Jim and his two Siamese cats, Koko and Yum Yum are surrounded by strange incidents, among them disappearance and murder! KoKo and Yum Yum goes about helping Jim solve the murders.
In "The Cat Who Plays Brahms", Jim Qwilleran and his two Siamese decides to get away from the big city and go to a lake house, belonging to a family friend. This is the book which explains how Jim inherits his fortune.
"The Cat Who Played Post Office" is the first book that actually details the City of Pickax and the various communities in Moose County. Jim is living in the K mansion and soon a murder takes place. KoKo goes right into action, and proceeds to *assist* Jim into solving the murder. I liked it that the continuation of this book was that the characters of Arch and Hixie have followed Qwill to live in Moose County.
By the continuation of characters from one book to the next, I have really found myself looking forward to each new book in this series. I highly recommend this book series!
You'll love Moose County; 400 miles north of everywhere!.......1998-03-17
Don't make the mistake I did by reading The Cat Who Saw Red first. I love these books but although The Cat Who Saw Red got the most press and is listed first inside the cover pages of all the books from the series it gives away too much from the earlier works. Of course, if you aren't like me and enjoy a good series from the beginning they can be picked up at any point and are thoroughly enjoyable each and every one. You'll love sensible Jim Qwilleran who treats his siamese cats, Koko and Yum Yum, like pampered guests. And why not? They are instrumental in solving mysteries and deciding who can be trusted and who cannot.

My Favorite Cozy Series!.......2006-07-19
In the 5th book in The Cat Who...series, James Qwilleran aka "Qwill", a newsman for the Daily Fluxion is in a bit of a funk. He had returned to writing for a paper after a several years absence, and has sobered up and adopted two beautiful Siamese cats. After bouncing around with several different assignments at the Daily Fluxion, Qwill is thinking of a change. When his apartment building is sold, and the Press Club is hideously remodeled, Qwill's mind is made up. He decides to take his godmother, Aunt Fanny, up on her offer of spending the summer at her cabin in Moose County. He purchases a car, packs up the cats, and heads 400 miles north of everywhere to live in Pickaxe. Surprises abound when Qwill rolls into town, and nothing seems to go right for him from the beginning. Animals have vandalized the cabin, blue pickups seem to follow Qwill everywhere, and the restaurants offer limp food and watery coffee. Aunt Fanny seems to have her own agenda as well, and even though Qwill loves his eccentric elderly "aunt", he gives her a wide berth while chuckling at her antics. When Qwill hooks a "corpse" on a fishing trip, he immediately reports it to the local authorities, but no one seems to take him seriously. He sees treachery at every turn, and the more that the locals laugh off his suspicions, the more Qwill is determined to figure out what illegal dealings are going on in this interesting town.
This is my favorite cozy mystery series! I had read all of the books in the past, and wanted to read them again for a second time. This time around, I have chosen to listen to them on CD, as I love the voice of George Guidall. I am happily rediscovering how Qwill became a resident of Moose County, and this book will lay the groundwork for the rest of the books to come. For those that have not read the series, I do recommend reading the first several first. Many others can be intermixed, but this book offers good insight as to how Qwill became associated with Moose County. This is a great series by my favorite author!

Koko Rides a Moose.......2005-04-22
In this the fifth book of this series, our hero Jim Qwilleran decides that it is time for a short change of pace and that he may just take his "Aunt" Fanny up on her offer of a free lakeside cabin for the summer. Any doubts he has about the move quickly disappear when he finds that the Press Club has been remodeled and that his living quarters have been sold out from under him. There is a little problem with story inconsistency here because Maus Haus is being torn down despite information in the last book that an art center of some sort must be maintained there. Not a big deal but it did draw my attention.
Soon Qwilleran has bought a car and he and his cats are headed to Pickaxe City to visit Aunt Fanny and then on to the cabin which is located in Mooseville. Braun is well known for her colorful characters and as one might imagine Moose County is fertile ground for a good crop of exceptionally colorful characters. Beyond the people, the area in question has a character all of it's own. The restaurants are for the most part awful, most people drive blue pick-up trucks, the local turkey farmer has a BO problem and no one wants to report a crime because they will get someone they know into trouble. There is indeed crime in Moose County but with nobody reporting it the police have to resort to setting up roadblocks to pass the time.
Qwilleran, a confirmed city boy has all kinds of problems while trying to get used to the rural quiet. He buys a cap so he will fit in but he thinks that the septic tank hole is a grave, he picks at poison ivy, and the various animal noises during the night prompt several calls to the sheriff. At one point he tries to impress a visitor by pointing out that they just heard an owl but the visitor corrects him and says it was a dove. An easy mistake that even my country born and raised wife has made.
As out of his element as Qwilleran is, he is still sure that something terribly illegal is going on around him. He pokes around but all he gets is a bad case of poison ivy and he is wary of calling the police since they already think he is about half-nuts. The mystery in this book is a little more subtle than in some of the previous books and the reader will not find the answer, or what the mystery is for that matter until late in the book. Basically the reader is in the same boat as the hero and is not able to quite put his finger on things until once again the cats come to the rescue. Then, even after the first mystery is solved another one appears that has been quietly lurking under everyone's nose for almost half of the book. Neither Qwilleran nor the readers know of this mystery until the mighty Koko provides the answer to the previously unknown question. For once the ever-suspicious reporter is not suspicious enough.
This is another good story by Lilian Jackson Braun that draws the reader in as the narrative proceeds. One isn't drawn in so much by a deep mystery but by the delightful characters to whom one becomes attached. The reader should pay particular attention to this book because it introduces the setting for the rest of the books in the series. Pickaxe City here we come.

The Cat Who is the best serries ever full of humor wit and complexity,
James Macentosh Qwilerin is a off beat repoter/Billion air with his 2 cats Koko and Yumyum who are no shorter than extra ordinary.
This is the best book serries I have ever read and would recomend it to any one over 10.

In "The Cat Who Played Brahms" Qwilleran takes a vacation from the big city and the press. He borrows a cabin from his Aunt Fanny, who is either hard of hearing or just doesn't listen. She lives in a town called Mooseville. Qwilleran buys a car and he and his two cats drive up to the cabin. Things get eerie when he finds something in the local cemetery. Someone did not want him to go to the cemetery even though it is advised in a tourist brochure. When while fishing on a strange boat he catches something unbelievable. Koko finds a secret tape stashed in the cabin and the vacation turns into another wonderful mystery.
I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to all mystery lovers. It kept my interest and I loved the cats. They bring a new meaning to mystery solving. This is the first book in the series that I have read and it will not be the last.

Another reviewer has done a terrific job encaptulating this book, so I won't go there.
But I will say, my two toddler age kids love books, especially about baseball. I've read them (and purchased) just about every children's book worth considering regarding baseball and this is in the top five.
Beautifully written and elegantly illustrated, this book tells the story from a young girls perspective about a mother that plays baseball during WWII.
It sends a number of positive messages to boys and girls alike. Pick up a copy of this book -- it's a keeper.
"Mama Played Baseball" - A Home Run Book.......2003-11-05
Through the eyes of a little girl named Amy, we can experience a little bit of life during World War II. During this time many athletic women vied for spots in the All-American Girls' Professional Baseball League. When Amy's mother first tells her of her plans to get a job in the league, Amy wonders, "What kind of job is that?" Baseball is only a game she thinks. Amy's perception of her mother playing pro-baseball changes as her mother makes the team, wins games, and is popular with the fans who ask for her autograph. The reader can easily sense Amy's excitement as she watches many of her mother's games, jumping up and down when her mom scores a hit.
Through a simple plot line, award-winning author David Adler has adequately shown the events of that time. He works a little humor into the story giving the reader a laugh or two and reminding us of common life experiences. "Mama Played Baseball" has a happy ending as Amy's father returns home safely. This is illustrator Chris O'Leary's first picture-book and he has done a magnificent job bringing the story to life. His artwork depicts the 1940s and contributes immensely to the overall story. The story is suitable for children in the lower elementary grades and could also be used in social studies or to introduce sports.
