4 out of 5 stars Missionary student, have used this book. .......2007-08-15

Excellent for use in third world countries. Every missionary should own a copy of this book. The only reason I do not give 5 stars to this book is because of the philosophies of David Werner on community development, which contradict biblical community development ideas. For instance, he promotes some non-conservative ideas about birth control. So Christians, just be careful whose hands this book gets into. I would give the same warning about the "where there is no women doctor" book. That one is definitely not worth buying, you're better off with a good basic handbook on childbirth and prenatal care.

1 out of 5 stars common sense.......2007-08-05

or lack thereof, c'mon people give me a break! If there is no doctor around and you are in need of medical attention then MOVE! stop whining because you have not lifted your feet for the entire existence of the planet! This kind of thing just nauseates me. I wish them well but c'mon, move away from despair and get closer to somewhere that a doctor can help you! Progression is hard I suppose.

5 out of 5 stars A village health care handbook for Africa, not an EMT manual........2007-05-30

Judging this book by its intended purpose it looks very good. Many things are basic like cleanliness, diet, don't smoke ciggarettes, etc. But I thought some were not so basic (and I couldn't find them in my boy scout manual). For example:
Page 67: the possible medicines needed for injection (Appendicitis - ampicillin or penicillin with streptomycin, syphilis - benzathine penicillin, gonorrhea - kanamycin, etc).
Page 154: six different vaccinations and the reccomended ages.
Page 169: a flowchart to care for a person with acute diarrhea (when would you give them metonidazole, or co-trimoxazole, or ampicillin?).
Page 180: treatment for pneumonia.
Page 208-210 chart: 38 different types of skin problems which include onthocerciasis, vitiligo, and kwashiorkor.
ETC.
Also the basic stuff is so well laid out that I could see it helping a worker organize their thoughts along the lines of "What do I need to check?" or "What do I need to teach those who don't know the basics?". If you were in a remote situation, people were sick wanting you to help them NOW, and THERE WAS NO DOCTOR this manual would be very reassuring to have. Stress can make you forget basics. Or maybe if you were in the States and couldn't afford health insurance and wanted to be sure you were in true need before you went to the doctor who will bill you for walking in the door?

2 out of 5 stars Very VERY basic.......2007-04-26

Unless you have no experience with basic medical care you will likely find this book very elementary and you would be better off buying a boy scout's handbook, although it wouldn't cover some of the female items, it would give you more information on dealing with the day to day.

The numerous references about 'seeing a doctor' defy the title and purpose implied by the book.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful material.......2007-02-24

David Werner has assembled a wonderful primer for anyone rendering care in the third world. There is useful information for everyone from lay people to MDs, well worth the time it takes to read the book. I especially like the succinct treatment plans with common and inexpensive medications. Treating patients in the third world without a laboratory, X-ray, or other modern tools takes a different mindset that WHERE THERE IS NO DOCTOR puts into perspective.

Strongly recommended. I'm taking a copy back to the mountains of Panama with me next week.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Guys!!!!! Don't shoot the messenger!!!!!.......2007-09-29

Dr. Brantley is one more courageous person who is willing to tell the truth about health maintenance and healing. These ideas are as old as time - our bodies' needs have never changed. What's changed is the quality of our planet's air, water, soil, food supply. Add to that sad state of affairs, the conditioning we've absorbed about how there's no relationship (or little) to how we are and what we ingest. It should surprise no one that advice for tackling a lethal disease might seem "radical". Truth is, so too is cancer radical. As are many other killer diseases that are MORE prevalent now than a century ago, in spite of all our techno advances and billions of dollars being funneled into research. With regard to the ages-old advice ("same 'ol")in this book on how and what to eat for health maintenance, there's nothing new here, that's true. Folks like Brantley bother to take the time to reiterate this "old" stuff for good reasons - in the hopes readers will HEED the wake up call. He offers knowledge that's tried and true for getting our lives and health back on track. And he explains the rhymes and reasons for doing what he suggests.

As for disclaimers.............No practitioner in his/her right mind would accept full responsibility for outcomes of their treatments because the outcome of a treatment of ANY kind is NOT predictable. Dr. Brantley addresses this right up front by stating that he wants the reader to know that not all of his clients survived or even rallied after following his protocol for their serious illnesses. He has less than no control as to what a reader actually DOES with the info in this book. Disclaimers are par. Do oncologists guarantee positive outcomes from traditional treatments? I advise anyone reading this to research mortality statistics for folks who choose chemo, radiation and surgery as their options. Then be mucho grateful that we have access to books like this one to enlighten us to options that have worked for others, even those who were given no hope by their doctors. We all need to wake up before we're faced with a crisis. True, the changes we'll be called to make aren't "convenient". To me, taking the viewpoint that they're too inconvenient or radical is really a sad testament to our society's empty status quo regarding all things sacred. What's more important than health? Dr. Brantley wants us to know that health is a byproduct of what we do. And if we serve our bodies well, we'll get to inhabit them as long as we need to.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing new here -- also medical disclaimers abound........2007-09-23

I read this book because it's very popular with a few Hollywood types. I question the author's qualifications to urge such a radical diet and both the beginning and end of the book open with strong disclaimers from the author and publisher that they're not responsible for what happens to you if you follow the practices recommended in this book. That's troubling. Also, there are a number of people's stories shared in the book who were treated by the author who miraculously seemed to have beaten cancer due (in no small measure) to the author's regimen. This seems to be unlikely hyperbole to me and setting up false hope in many potential readers. I'll sum up this book for you in a sentence or two: Drink lots of water (author recommends specific bottled water over tap), eat lots of raw food, don't eat breads, pasta, white rice, junk food, fast food, etc. There you go. I just saved you the price of this book.

4 out of 5 stars too good to be true.......2007-09-15

It is difficult to be as strict as the author wishes...but I have adopted most of his recommendations. This book is very entertaining and written in an interesting format...highly recommend this book it will change your life

3 out of 5 stars Less processed foods good but..........2007-08-27

I think the basic concept of drinking more water and eating less processed foods is very valid and would help anyone live a healthier lifestyle but it would be great if the author had included more science to back up his findings. He wrote that it was too expensive to run a controlled test but does have a group of people agree to be tested after eating a raw diet, a "transition" diet and regular diet. But with the tests he uses (ph and kinesiology and one more I can't remember), I think few people would understand and be convinced by the results. I understand that he's very suspicious of medicine as practiced here in the US but blood tests are pretty common and most people would understand if he reported that after eating the raw diet he recommends, their blood pressure or cholesterol level dropped, etc.

Also, while I believe that less processed is better, I don't know of any culture, ancient or modern, that doesn't cook part or most of its daily diet. Eating only certain things together also seems odd to me, like no fruit after a meal of something else. Now, I'm no anthropologist but I'm guessing if a caveman found some berries after eating meat, he'd eat the berries. And that's about as close to eating straight from nature as one might imagine.

There were weird gaps in the info too, like where he mentions that you need to remineralize yourself after drinking alot of distilled or "structured" waters, which I've heard elsewhere, but then says you should do your own research on that and mentions his proprietary formula which he sells. Nothing about what you should look for in a mineral formula which to me indicates he really just wants you to buy his formula which I didn't care for.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome! Finally someone puts in a book what we all should live by!.......2007-08-20

Wonderful book! I have based my practice as a nutritionial consultant on these same principals! It isn't hard to understand or follow like some other "cynics" claim! It makes total sense. OF course if you don't want to believe that our creator has put everything on this earth that we would need to survive and then we started destroying his works with our modern scientific processing. Then you would not agree with him. But on the other hand, if you were willing to actually understand what the book is saying about food and our body and what we were truly meant to consume and what should never have been consumed then this book is meant for you.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A recommended pick .......2007-06-17

BURIED IN TREASURES: HELP FOR COMPULSIVE ACQUIRING, SAVING, AND HOARDING is written for those who have a compulsive hoarding problem: it comes from a team of scientists who have worked for over a dozen years on developing a program for treating hording, and chapters both define compulsive hoarding and offer strategies to begin to sort, discard and move away from hoarding habits. The authors have been featured on TV and in articles for their ground-breaking research, and BURIED IN TREASURES is thus a recommended pick beyond the usual college-level health library, reaching easily into public library collections with an easily-accessed format and approach.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book! .......2007-06-08

While it's true that it is not presented in a scholarly way (as a previous reviewer commented), the information in the book represents the most current knowledge we have on hoarding. As others have mentioned, the authors are preeminent experts in the field. All three are Ph.Ds and have published numerous scholarly works on this topic. I believe the authors must have deliberately chosen to leave out the clinical jargon for this book, in order to make the information accessible to those without a medical or science background. I think the book is quite elegant in its simplicity and clarity, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about hoarding.

4 out of 5 stars Good info for relatives of hoarders.......2007-06-08

This book has a lot of valuable information about hoarders and how their minds process differently than non-hoarders. Although the intended audience is hoarders themselves, I don't see hoarders as able to read this book and follow the process. I do think the book is helpful to anyone who lives with or knows a hoarder, and also mental health providers.
One negative: the large page size is a bit unwieldy.

5 out of 5 stars You might need this book and not know it........2007-05-22

Hard core look at why we can't throw things away. New info, not just a "how to organize" book. Real help for pack rats like me who are not over the edge yet, but are teetering.

5 out of 5 stars A Useful Tool.......2007-05-08

In the introduction of "Buried in Treasures", Tolin, Frost and Steketee offer two cautions to the reader. Caution 1 "this book will not solve your hoarding problems". They state "this book is a guide that will provide you with the necessary information to understand the problem of compulsive hoarding and will give you tools to help beat the problem". Caution 2 is that "overcoming compulsive hoarding will be hard work".

The authors emphasize that hoarding is "a problem of emotional, mental, behavioral, and social well-being" and that "some scientific evidence suggests that there may be a genetic component to hoarding". It is basically a description of the treatment program that they have developed over many years of treating patients at their hoarding clinic. While the book discusses the physical side regarding sorting and purging as well as the stopping of the acquiring, its' emphasis is on the mental/emotional side of hoarding.

As opposed to other similar books, this book is based on science and ongoing clinical research. The book is essentially a guide to change and the authors note that "people start to work on their hoarding problem when the reasons for change outweigh the reasons for not changing, and not a moment sooner". Their suggested treatment is based on CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy) which is solution focused.

This is somewhat of a workbook. It includes many exercises to help the hoarder to consciously change their thinking. Some examples are a self-assessment test in the chapter "What is Compulsive Hoarding?", a hoarding severity scale that is very similar
to the NSGCD Hoarding Scale, Visualization Exercises, Category & Location lists and questionnaires such as "Comparing Your Perceptions with Those of Others".

Early in the book, the authors introduce and discuss the Bad Guys: 1 - It's Just Not My Priority, 2 - Letting Unhelpful Beliefs Get In Your Way, 3 - Overthinking or Confusing Yourself, 4 - Avoidance and Excuse Making and 5 - Going for the Short-Term Payoff. Then they introduce the Good Guys: 1- Keeping Your Eyes on the Prize, 2 - Downward Arrow, 3 - Thinking It Through, 4 - Behavioral Experiments and 5 - Developing the Right Skills. The authors revisit the Bad Guys and the Good Guys again later in the book when dealing with motivation and "taking on your brain".

An interesting observation noted by the authors was that when hoarders attempted to sort their own items, they tended to have lots of little categories but when sorting similar items that belonged to other people, they were able to sort into a few large general categories. This suggests that when dealing with their own possessions, "their emotions get in the way and cause them to process information differently".

As a Professional Organizer, I consider this book a tool. It is not a `how to' that a hoarder could pick up, read and follow to a successful conclusion. On their own, most hoarders are just not capable of following some of the suggestions, such as, "you might want to think a step or two ahead"! However this is an excellent book if used as part of a larger treatment program.

Book Description

Designed to provide a nonmathematical introduction to biostatistics for medical and health science students, graduate students in the biological sciences, physicians, and researchers, this text explains statistical principles in non-technical language and focuses on explaining the proper scientific interpretation of statistical tests rather than on the mathematical logic of the tests themselves. Intuitive Biostatistics covers all the topics typically found in an introductory statistics text, but with the emphasis on confidence intervals rather than P values, making it easier for students to understand both. Additionally, it introduces a broad range of topics left out of most other introductory texts but used frequently in biomedical publications, including survival curves. multiple comparisons, sensitivity and specificity of lab tests, Bayesian thinking, lod scores, and logistic, proportional hazards and nonlinear regression. By emphasizing interpretation rather than calculation, this text provides a clear and virtually painless introduction to statistical principles for those students who will need to use statistics constantly in their work. In addition, its practical approach enables readers to understand the statistical results published in biological and medical journals.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a great resource.......2007-10-12

I wouldn't exactly call this book easy reading, but not many books that cover statistics at this level are. It is, however, very worthwhile reading for those who want a better understanding of biostatistics. I've taken a couple of graduate level statistics courses, and often when I couldn't quite understand what the textbook or teacher was talking about, reading this book clarified things for me. As a reasearcher, I continue to use this book occasionally to refresh my memory on various aspects of statistics, and it has served me very well. People may criticize the book for being "non-mathematical," but I don't think that's fair because it was not intended to be a rigorous math-stats book. There are plenty of those available, and none that I know of that can explain things as well to consumers of statistics like me.

2 out of 5 stars Deceptive.......2007-08-10

If you think you can learn Statistics intuitively and without mathematics or in otherwords the easy way, I have an intuitive Brain Surgery book for sale.

5 out of 5 stars An original approach. An excellent book on the subject........2007-06-13

The majority of reviewers really liked this book. I can see why, I did too. The author uses a unique approach to teaching statistics that is focused on calculating and explaining Confidence Intervals (the minimum and maximum value you expect an outcome to be given a confidence level typically 95%) rather than P values (probability outcome is due to chance). He also uses common sense and clearly distinguishes between what is statistically significant and what is "significant." Thus, he translates well statistical mumbo jumbo into plain English. He tells you what you should care about and look for.

He shares with you all the statistical flaws that clinical studies may have including testing multiple hypothesis to come up with just a single statistically meaningful one, using large samples to prove something trivial, using small samples that raises uncertainty level, etc...

His section on Bayesian Logic is excellent. His table on what test or methodology to use given the shape of the data and objective you have is worth the price of the book alone. That's one of the clearest taxonomy of statistical methods I have seen anywhere.

Some knowledgeable reviewers have picked up a few errors the author made. I stumbled upon a couple while attempting to replicate the calculation of a few examples. I emailed the author and each time within an hour he either clarified the calculation or corrected the typo that was present in the book. Given his prompt answers, I can't ding him for the couple of typos I caught.

Although the author presents this book as an introductory one, I recommend the reader acquires a good foundation in basic statistics before studying this book. Forgotten Statistics would fit that bill. Indeed, `Intuitive Biostatistics' covers a huge amount of ground. It is far more than an introductory text. It covers material that is pretty advanced including nonparametric hypothesis tests, non linear regression, logistic regression, Bayesian analysis, etc... If it is the first time you come across that stuff you'd be well served having a solid stats foundation. Given that, this book has a lot to offer. I'll keep it as a great reference for years.

5 out of 5 stars Hey, I got an A in Biostats I.......2007-01-04

I am not a high faltuin' math person, the calculus I went through in undergrad was a struggle and I remember very little. I am a chemist by training, currently seeking my PhD in Public Health while working full time. What that came down to was little to no time to doof around with a muddled textbook or an equally muddled professor or a non-English speaking Teacher's Assistant.

I have no intention of becoming a biostatistician or an epidemiologist, I am interested in policy.

So coming from that perspective, as a student, this book was an absolute God-send.

Not only did I get an A in the class, but I feel like I have a sturdy foundation for my future coursework and career. I will not be intimidated by numbers or jargon because Dr. Motulsky made it all as straightforward and clear as possible, and I recall even laughing a few times.

Overall, if you are in school, facing a biostatics class with extreme trepidation, buy this book as a supplement. Look up the topics in the index as you go and you will have more than the $40 worth of "eureka" moments.

The dramatic and chilling story of an Ebola virus outbreak in a surburban Washington, D.C. laboratory, with descriptions of frightening historical epidemics of rare and lethal viruses. More hair-raising than anything Hollywood could think of, because it's all true.

Book Description

A highly infectious, deadly virus from the central African rain forest suddenly appears in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. There is no cure. In a few days 90 percent of its victims are dead. A secret military SWAT team of soldiers and scientists is mobilized to stop the outbreak of this exotic "hot" virus. The Hot Zone tells this dramatic story, giving a hair-raising account of the
appearance of rare and lethal viruses and their "crashes" into the human race. Shocking, frightening, and impossible to ignore, The Hot Zone proves that truth really is scarier than fiction.

5 out of 5 stars A True Story .......2007-08-15

I purchased this book for my granddaughter. She is in Nursing School and was told by one of her teachers this book would be of special interest to anyone in the medical field as well as anyone else. She said it was easy to read and held her attention very well. She was glad to have the opportunity to read this terrifying true story about an Ebola outbreak in Africa.

5 out of 5 stars It CAN happen here.......2007-08-14

Marburg. Ebola. Two names that mean nothing to most laymen, but scare the hell out of virologists. You see, Marburg and Ebola are exotic viruses which, when introduced into the human population, kill nine out of ten in a ghastly and painful manner, literally dissolving their insides. So far, outbreaks of these viruses have been rare, usually occurring in remote African villages. Once, however, an Ebola virus surfaced in the United States. The Hot Zone tells the story of its arrival and the steps the military took to take prevent its spread.

Preston takes great pains to tell the stories of these killer viruses, documenting their origins and the human cost of their spread. He takes readers to Kitum Cave in Kenya, where many believe the viruses originated. Then he takes them to Germany and Africa, where outbreaks of the viruses have ravaged local populations. Finally, he brings them to a suburb of Washington, DC, where a sister virus manifests itself, threatening the safety of millions. Frightening because it's true, this story will have you nervously turning pages until the happy, but unsettling, conclusion.

Most of us live with blinders on, not realizing that death can take us any time it wants. Can't happen here you say? It already did, but the good news is we all dodged a bullet. The bad news is that it could happen again, with far more disastrous results.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, Scary, Gripping - Must Read!! .......2007-08-06

As soon as I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. Reading about Ebola-Z/R/S, sent chills down my spine. I was so scared, that I was afraid to touch the book next morning. I couldn't sleep through the night wondering what was going to happen next. I have lived less than two miles from the "Monkey house" and have eaten several times at the Taco Bell and McDonald's mentioned in the book. Fully understanding that the building no longer exists and that area is extremely safe, I am unsure about my reaction when I am in that area next time. One thing is certain - I have a whole lot of new appreciation for CDC,USAMRIID, and Pathologists. I am thankful to them for their altruistic service to the well being of mankind.

5 out of 5 stars As a Biology Teacher, I recommend this EVERY semester!.......2007-07-24

This book, and its sequel, Demon in the Freezer, are two of the few books that have kept me up at night. If they don't scare you to death, if you can actually put the book down, then you aren't actually reading these books. The Hot Zone is the basis for the movie Outbreak but 100 time better. It is a true story and written in a way that grips you from the first page to the very last. I teach college biology for non-science majors and I have recommended this book every semester for five years. It is easy to read and understand. Hard to beat!

5 out of 5 stars This will keep you up at night.......2007-07-23

I read this book while living only a few hours from Reston, VA where the US ebola outbreak took place, which made it all the more horrifying to read.
As much as we love to believe we live in a world made safe by science, it is unnerving to read about a virus, so tiny and so primative, that can have such devastating effects on humanity. As we continue to transform our landscape and become more and more relient on technology, we place ourselves at enormous risk of new and emerging diseases.
This book's recounting of the handling of this outbreak, and others shows the progress of science and the limitations people and governments interests put on our very survival.

In addition to planning and pre-disaster exercises essential for allocating resources and devising effective mental health interventions, this book also includes two CDs showing an international panel of experts discussing how best to plan for a bioterrorist event. Although only twelve people died after the sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway system in 1995, more than five thousand sought medical care for the effects of possible exposure. Bioterrorism can create chaos and disruption on a national and international scale. Moreover, it is believed to incur the most devastating psychological sequelae of all disasters.

    Book Description

Meta-analysis, decision analysis, and cost-effectiveness analysis are the cornerstones of evidence-based medicine. These related quantitative methods have become essential tools in the formulation of clinical and public policy based on the synthesis of evidence. All three methods are taught with increasing frequency in medical schools and schools of public health and in health policy courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. This book is a lucid introduction, and will serve the needs of students taking introductory courses that cover these topics. It will also be useful to clinicians and policymakers who need to understand the quantitative underpinnings of the methods in order to best apply the information that derives from them. The second edition of this popular book adds new material on cumulative meta-analysis as a method to explore heterogeneity. The coverage of cost-effectiveness analysis has been brought into close alignment with recommendations of the U.S. Public Health Panel on Cost-Effectiveness Analysis in Health and Medicine. Many of the examples have been replaced with more current examples, and all of the material has been updated to reflect recent advances in the methods and the emergence of consensus about some previously controversial issues. analysis. These three closely related methods have become even more important for synthesizing research since the first edition was published in 1994. And they have gained legitimacy as tools for guiding health policy.

5 out of 5 stars Best guide for analysis.......2006-12-20

There are several ways to do analysis of the health care industry but this book covers the big three. Cost Effectiveness is the most useful from a business standpoint. This book covers the math and theory behind each of these methods and gives strong arguments for how to write in each of them. As a health and pharmaceutical economist I found this book to be invaluable. It is written very clearly and helps sort through many of the issues especially meta analysis. If you are starting out in the health analyst field this is a must read and a book you will want to have handy at all times.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory text.......2002-02-05

Meta-analysis, as both an applied and theoretical science, continues to develop from its rather humble beginnings. Since most physicians lack a strong background in quantitative science, rigorous statistical approaches to clinical decision making have been slow to gain widespread support. Despite its limitations, meta-analysis is proving to be an important vehicle for making sense of the increasingly overwhelming amount of published data in the biomedical sciences. Petitti's book goes a long way in demystifying meta-analysis for the rank and file and also serves as an excellent introduction to the field for the more statistically literate.

Most of my own work is in meta-analysis and I bought the book exclusively for this content and not information on decision analysis and cost-effectiveness analysis. I do not mean to minimize the importance of the latter but rather point out my own narrow interest in the Petitti text.

The book is well written and concise. Petitti "cuts to the chase" explaining the theory underlying meta-analytic methods and provides many useful examples from the medical literature. The text is easy to follow, understandable and well balanced. A thorough reading should leave the reader well prepared for further exploration of applied meta-analysis as well as capable of articulating its strengths, weaknesses and future direction.

Overall, Petitti's text is an excellent place to start for those interested in learning the fundamentals of "research synthesis". The book is also an extremely handy references for the more experienced practitioner. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars clearest yet description this topic.......1997-07-08

In a forest of mirky and arcane descriptions of a field that has come to dominate medical research and policy making, this book stands out for its clarity. Dr. Petitti speaks a language that normal people can understand. She avoids jargon and frequently uses quantitative examples that make it easy to plug in your own problems and directly apply her lessons to your tasks. This is easily the best book in print on this topic

2 out of 5 stars Do not use a cannon to kill a mosquito..........2007-06-12

Am I missing something here? What is with all these positive reviews? This is the most laborious book I have ever let grace my senses. It is required reading for one of my classes, but there is absolutely NO in depth analysis of the statistical data presented. It is a VERY pedestrian and pedantic review of some very real common sense. Here is the whole book in a nutshell: The worse off you are in society, the worse your health is in this country. Now if you feel like you need 300 pages of graphs you'll probably never look at (because they are painstakingly described in text anyways), or you really want to know exactly how much more likely you are to have chronic illness if you are black, poor, and uninsured, then be my guest and buy this book. Just don't say you weren't warned. This book is only useful if you need a large source of recompiled stats and data on the topic.

5 out of 5 stars an unbiased textbook that politicians who care about health care should read.......2006-06-24

The authors make a great point that poverty rates are increasing in this country, companies are fast dropping health insurance coverage for their employees, and immigration continues to be on the rise. These facts make this book applicable to almost everyone...since there is no guarantee that the middle and upper classes will have health insurance in the next few years. Remember how Starbucks became famous for offering health insurance to all employees, but the points raised in this book were echoed just a few months back, when Starbucks stood on the steps of Congress and said they soon would no longer be able to offer this coverage because of the huge increases in price. This book prepares you for what's to come and offers some GREAT tips on what needs to be done to help make sure that these problems don't tear apart this country. It's a great read...Shi and Stevens should really be commmended.

      5 out of 5 stars A BRILLIANTLY Written Classic!!.......2006-06-18

What else is there to say...this is a winner by far. It covers issues in health care for the poor and underserved so solidly, that this might well be considered the defining book on the issue. Considering how much it has to say, and how deep the theory goes, its amazing that it can also be SO UNDERSTANDABLE. If you need a good primer in health care for the "vulnerable" in this world (well, primarily the U.S. in this case), this is your book. I would only recommend that they cover international issues more...but that's probably something they could write an entire other book about.

5 out of 5 stars Smart book, clear explanations, very comprehensive........2006-06-18

I bought this book for a class on health care in the U.S. and it was the only book in my entire year of school that I actually kept! The others I sold back for $10 each, but this one is a keeper. In particular, I liked that it gives step-by-step instructions for people and organizations to use to solve the problem of health disparities. Also, very clearly written!

3 out of 5 stars Great for the public health nurse!.......2005-09-12

I am not a public health nurse, I am an ICU nurse at heart. However as doctoral student, this text was required for a course I am currently taking. It truly opened my eyes to vulnerability even within the US. With the recent and current national crisis and disasters, the concepts discussed are brought home.
