5 out of 5 stars Genius!!.......2007-07-26

Like a good song that make you get up and move, this book is pure inspiration! The stories are told in a way that gives you the experience of discovering the truth of your own heart. I appreciate the contributors' honest accounts of their setbacks, and discomforts. I also wanted to know what the professionals learned on their way to reaching the pinnacle of their success. Most of all, it delivers a powerful message of having the nerve to turn out the odds. It stimulated my conscience in a way that even my understanding of passion elevated to another level.

Even though I'm not a voice over actor, I'm still an actor who audition on a regular basis. The principles are the same and I've had to refer to the lessons more than a few times. Needless to say, this book has served me very well. I applied the lessons to my line of work and have gotten amazing results.

It is your soul that will find food here. Unless you put the suggestions to practice, the secrets will pass you by leaving you once again with frustration and doubt. In other words, this book will point you into the direction of your hearts' desire. If you follow your heart, "Secrets" will find and move you in some way. Only when ready to receive new information will your thirst for knowledge and a new point of view expand. After reading, I asked myself, do I dare? The stories in this book tells me the answer is a question of courage and effort; a question of desire. We either love/enjoy our labor or not. It's for each us to decide.

Certainly, you'll get a second wind after reading this gem of a book called, Secrets of Voice Over Success.

Joan:
You and the other contributors' courage have encouraged me. If just one soul is empowered, that's valid enough. And, you've even managed to find a creative way to enlarge the vision of humanity by contributing to a good cause such as the Alzheimer's Association. Bravo!!! Your work is a perfect expression of love in action! Now suddenly the impossible seems possible!

5 out of 5 stars A Bible for VO artists.......2007-07-23

This book does what no other VO book has. It puts aspiring VO talent into the world of successful VO talent. Every other book I've looked at is a technical guide...dry and dull. Training is important and I've had my share but this book answers all the FAQ's the other books miss. If you want to make a living at VO this is a must have.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT INSIGHTS FROM SUCCESSFUL VO PROS!.......2007-07-21

One of the most common question questions I hear in the Los Angeles voice over world is how did the big guns get to the top. Well, this book uses standardized interview questions to 19 of the top vo talent in the U.S., Joan herself being one of them. You couldn't wish for a better one on one interview with each one.

Everyone interviewed certainly had distinct things to say, but some common threads were "just fell into it", battled racism on the way and hard work and persistence really pays off.

A note to the wise: if you're in this business for quick profit forget about it. This career path has alot of competition, and only those with stamina and passion for voice work will stand the test of time and make a full-time living at it.

The Alzheimer aspect was valuable in today's society where it is estimated that in the coming decades, unless something is done, millions of the aging group of Americans will succumb to this heart-wrenching disease. Go Joan!!

5 out of 5 stars Inspiration is sometimes all that's needed.......2007-06-29

I'm just flummoxed by a previous review of Joan Baker's "Secrets of Voice-Over Success". Ms. Baker is deemed by the reviewer to be irrelevant, obvious and out of date because she neglects to deconstruct the semiotics of the latest manifestations of an ever-changing gamut of voiceover styles. Whazzat? Pretty heavy, I guess, but these quibbles convey nothing of the wonderful and inspiring book I read. What could be more relevant and uplifting than the tales these voice artists relate as to how they reached the high level of success they enjoy today. These are top people, engaging in national level campaigns right now. Their voices are supposed to be irrelevant? I don't think so.

For a newcomer to voiceover like myself it's so encouraging to learn how others overcame pitfalls and obstacles to make it in our chosen field. Joan Baker's nifty volume is like a pat on the back and a helping hand along the way. Kudos to Joan and to all the artists who so generously gave of their time and experience to help make this marvelous book a reality. And what more wonderful theme to tie the volume together than touching on the effects of Alzheimer's on the lives of so many of us? Something tells me that one day, when we've reached the other side of the River Jordan, we'll be surprised to learn just how much good this book will have done to help those poor souls afflicted with Alzheimer's.

5 out of 5 stars Secrets is a gold mine!.......2007-06-26

I orginally met the author Joan Baker at her Learning Annex workshop called "Make Millions With Your Voice" where I was very very impressed but after just finishing her book and meeting more than half the people in the book at her workshop-Iam overwhelmed with inspiration!
Thank you Joan Baker and the Vo Artist's in Secrets for moving me forward in my vo career that I've been navigating for the past 6 years. Thank you!
I would recommend this book to anyone seeking solutions in the Vo industry.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Bible of Voice-Acting Out There.......2007-09-19

James Alburger wrote this book some years ago. In fact, he's on his 3rd edition! And this book is still so in style. Having worked in voice-over for a number of years here in Los Angeles I can honestly say that Mr. Alburger hits the nail on the head with his advice. He covers the basics like proper breath control, how to create believable characters and subtext, breaking down copy, recording a demo and how to succeed at your first session. You can follow the samples that he has included in the book and on the CD to practice your craft and get it down. How great is that!

Recently I heard that Mr. Alburger and his colleague Penny are putting on a major voice-over event here in L.A. sometime in the spring 2008. I don't think aspiring voice-over artists will want to miss that, but should read his book first.

By the way, Mr. Alburger is correct that on-going training and "classes" are essential to voiceover success....unless you are lucky enough to be working every day in the industry....which is very rare.

A must-read for anyone interested in entering this potentially lucrative industry. Break a leg!

2 out of 5 stars Sloppy, inattentive to detial, repetative, some good info, though.......2007-08-09

Has some good information in it. It's written in simple, accessible prose. But, honestly, there were so many typos within the first few pages, that I started getting distracted and looking for them. It's also quite repetitive, reiterating, rather than adding to a point or topic. (i.e. "take as many VO and acting classes as you can!")

5 out of 5 stars This is the BIBLE for aspiring voice-over talent........2007-08-09

Only thing I have a problem with in this excellent book is the rather constant "suggestions" that you stay in classes forever. As in stage and film acting, a lot of good, natural actors have been ruined by "teachers" who insist on "shaping" them to their own personal style. Works for some workshop junkies I suppose.

5 out of 5 stars Thorough primer.......2007-06-05

This book provides all the necessary information one needs to find his or her way into the voice acting profession.

Alburger brims with enthusiasm and an earnest desire to share his experience to the benefit of others.

It could probably be a little more concise, but the positive tone of the book more than makes up for any wordiness or repetition.

Thanks, James!

5 out of 5 stars Worthy Investment.......2007-05-18

The author, James Alburger, has taken his passion and years of knowledge, experience, and wisdom to assist others who are interested in the art of voice acting. I have not attended any workshops yet, but after reading this book that also comes with a demo cd... I feel that I have gained a wealth of information that will be very valuable as I develop my voice acting career.

This book covers tips, techniques, the business side, auditions, demos, characters, promotions, agents, and getting paid. I enjoyed this book and will read it over and over again on my acting journey.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Like talking with a friend.......2007-05-16

Harlan Hogan provides a lot of explanation of how things work in the VO world (or at least as they did in 2002, when this book was written). He gives great advice while lightly touching on subjects like running your business, jargon, union vs. "pre-union", etc. However, he also offers some insight that beginning voice actors aren't likely to find in a lot of other books. Harlan does this by recounting stories from his own experience that not only entertain, but relate to the major points of each section. He also lets the reader in on inside jokes of the trade like "Blooper's Soap" and the infamous Findus Foods session with Orson Welles. Sure, they're easily Google-able, but how are they woven into the fabric of the industry?

I've done radio for a dozen years, switched to the computer tech side
for another half-dozen and now I'm studying and working on figuring out
where I will best fit into the VO market. This book not only confirmed
a lot of things I felt instinctively, but it also helped me to not
listen so much to the "what if" voice that we all carry with us.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely entertaining and informative.......2006-09-01

I really enjoyed this book, it is really informative, entertaining and gives and inside look at voice over acting. This is one of the few books that I will re-read becouse of all the usefull information, a must read for anyone starting out or considering a career as a voice actor.

5 out of 5 stars Can I give it 100 stars instead of 5?.......2006-07-21

This book is excellent. It's packed with information about what one should expect if he/she wants to work in the Voice Acting industry, and it also includes many tips & tricks that voice actors could follow in order to advance in their careers.

It's hilariously entertaining yet down-to-earth informative - a rare combination achievable in books.

On top of that, it's easy to read, so you don't see much of those long-worded-jargons-which-you-will-find-in-technical-books for instance. Instead, you get cute cartoons replacing the too-much-information type of thing.

As I've mentioned in the title, I'd give this book 100 stars if I could.

This book truly is one of the BEST purchases I've EVER made.

~ Jessie

5 out of 5 stars Simply excellent.......2006-06-19

If you're someone who's always felt they had the talent to do voiceover work, and had no idea where to start, you simply can't go wrong with Harlan Hogan's excellent book. Mr. Hogan's writing style is light and humorous, which makes the book a very unintimidating way to get acquainted with the world of voice acting.

Mr. Hogan relates his path to a VO career with memoirs and humorous anecdotes (you can tell he really enjoys his work!), while providing separate "techniques" sections throughout, covering all the aspects of the voiceover profession from getting the work to doing the work to accounting for the work. Yes, even the section on bookkeeping and the IRS is fun to read, while providing critical information to prevent common mistakes.

As an added bonus, you also get clued in to the VO profession's shorthand and lore. Do you know what "wild on the last line" means? Have you ever heard of Blooper's Soap, or know why you can crack up just about any professional VO simply by saying "IN July"? You will after reading Mr. Hogan's book!

Whether you're a clueless wanna-be (like me, at this point), a newcomer or an established professional, Mr. Hogan's _VO: Tales and Techniques of a Voice-Over Actor_ is a must-read!

5 out of 5 stars The VO "Missing Manual".......2006-06-15

Skilfully written as a concise and no-holds-barred discussion about Voice Over acting, the author draws on years of personal experience as a fledgling radio broadcaster/stage actor; becoming the acclaimed Voice Over veteran who continues to enjoy an amazing and prolific Voice Over acting career: a Master of the Game.

Generously offering useful advise on how to get started as a Voice Over actor (by finding the best workshop, voice coach, agent, union), showing how internet technology in particular ISDN/DSL patches can help leverage one's career in the Voice Over field, and breaking into personal anecdotes that inform as well as entertain readers... Harlan Hogan has covered it all in a witty narrative that is really the "missing manual" for the Voice Over professional and newcomer.

Reeve also went to that college and he DJ'd for a college radio station. He tells about Janie's personal life and how he felt and about her kidnapping. Janie heard one of his "janies" that he was telling and it happened to be the worst one he told about her. Janie and Reeve broke up and Jodie was sad because she was hoping to go there so she and Reeve could see Janie when she came to visit and Reeve could also help her find her way around the college and the dorms. Janie visited her real family in New Jersey and she soon began to feel close to them and the only person she told about her and Reeve was her real mother. In the end, Janie became friends with Reeve, but it didn't mean much to her.

After having read the two books leading up to The Voice on the Radio, The Face on the Milk Carton and Whatever Happened to Janie, I am still eager for more of Caroline B. Cooney's Janie Series! Each book is better than the one before! As "Voice of Youth Advocates" says Voice on the Radio is "a real page-turner" the book lives up to its multi-genre quality of mystery, romance, and drama including many climaxes in the story. These numerous moments of intesity get my heart pounding and my eyes opened wide. Just when you think poor Janie Johnson has found time to breathe, betrayal from a loved one catches her off-gaurd. Fortunately, Janie Johnson or "Jennie Spring" has two loving families to help her through it all, but how much can her families take? Sooner or later Janie will have no where to run to or a place to hide...

4 out of 5 stars The voice on the Radio.......2006-10-12

Have you ever been betrayed by your best friend or boyfriend and felt like you could never forgive them? Well, this book is all about how Janie's boyfriend went to college to become a DJ for a radio station.
As time went on Janie's boyfriend started something that would make Janie very mad if she found out what exactly he was doing. He kept up the same thing and never thought she would figure it out, until she did.
I liked this book because it kept you on the edge of your seat most of the time and it gives good detail about everything. This book is very interesting and will make you want to read the rest of the book in the series!

Book Description

Al-Jazeera and other satellite television stations have transformed Arab politics over the last decade. By shattering state control over information and giving a platform to long-stifled voices, these new Arab media have challenged the status quo by encouraging open debate about Iraq, Palestine, Islamism, Arab identity, and other vital political and social issues. These public arguments have redefined what it means to be Arab and reshaped the realm of political possibility. As Marc Lynch shows, the days of monolithic Arab opinion are over. How Arab governments and the United States engage this newly confident and influential public sphere will profoundly shape the future of the Arab world.

Marc Lynch draws on interviews conducted in the Middle East and analyses of Arab satellite television programs, op-ed pages, and public opinion polls to examine the nature, evolution, and influence of the new Arab public sphere. Lynch, who pays close attention to what is actually being said and talked about in the Arab world, takes the contentious issue of Iraq-which has divided Arabs like no other issue-to show how the media revolutionized the formation and expression of public opinion. He presents detailed discussions of Arab arguments about sanctions and the 2003 British and American invasion and occupation of Iraq. While Arabs strongly disagreed about Saddam's regime, they increasingly saw the effects of sanctions as a potent symbol of the suffering of all Arabs. Anger and despair over these sanctions shaped Arab views of America, their governments, and themselves.

Lynch also suggests how the United States can develop and improve its engagement with the Arab public sphere. He argues that the United States should move beyond treating the Arab public sphere as either an enemy to be defeated or an object to be manipulated via public relations. Instead of wasting vast sums of money on a satellite television station nobody watches, the United States should enter the public sphere as it really exists.

5 out of 5 stars The Way the Arab World Sees the News.......2006-04-18

'To see ourselves as others see us' (from Robert Burns) is not something that we are usually granted. In today's world Al-Jazeera is presenting us with that opportunity.

The Arab world is for the most part characterised by leadership that is less than ideal. In most Arab countries the news is heavily censored, controled or owned by a state that just wants its own views to be shown. These media had relatively little to tell us as they were simply parroting the governments view. ==In recent years, Al-Jazeera and other smaller satellite based news agencies have begun presenting a relatively unbiased news report that goes around the official government reporting.

This book is first a report on Al-Jazeera and the way it presents the news. Second, it offers a series of suggestions on how the United States can develop and improve its engagement with the Arab public sphere.

This is one of the few books to report on the Arab view, and further to discuss the changes in the information dissemination area. It is a book that deserves reading by anyone interested in developing a realistic view of the conflict that is emerging between the US and the Arab world.

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating study of the history, present day, and future of new voices flourishing in the middle east.......2006-04-07

Voices of the New Arab Public: Iraq, Al-Jazeera, and Middle East Politics Today boldly reveals that the era of monolithic Arab opinion are over. Examining how Al-Jazeera and other satellite television stations have revolutionized Arab journalism and politics by breaking state control over information, Voices of the New Arab Public particularly focuses upon the Al-Jazeera era in context of the challenges facing modern Iraq. Political science professor Marc Lynch offers a fascinating study of the history, present day, and future of new voices flourishing in the middle east.

I read this book when I was first starting out and it really helped me on my way, now I have a very successful voiceover business! www.laurasweeney.com

3 out of 5 stars Picks up Where the Others Leave Off.......2001-04-14

I can recommend this book on two conditions: one, if you have already read The Art Of Voice Acting by James Alburger and two, you are enrolled in a voice workshop or class where you can ask an instructor follow up questions. Some of the advice in this book is patently false. For example, a three and a half minute demo tape? Most demos run one and a half to two minutes, tops. And the author gives the impression that you can make your own demo, when the industry demands a professionally produced tape or cd just to get an agent. It's not fair to say that all the information within this book is not useful, but I would place it a distant third behind the two fine books by Alburger and Elaine Clark.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent "Producer's-Eye View" of Voiceovers.......2000-05-31

Don't start with this book, because you need to have a foundation of talent and craft before some of the things in here will begin to make sense. But if you've got some decent chops (from classes or perhaps by working through Susan Blu's "Word of Mouth" or Elaine Clark's "There's Money Where Your Mouth Is"), by all means profit from this excellent guide to the "externals" of voiceover work.

I say "externals" because this book does not really focus on the inner journey that a voice actor must undertake to become skillful: the acting techniques, like relaxation, concentration, visualization, and so forth. But there are other books that cover such things (including the two mentioned above).

Where this book shines is in describing the real-world environment in which voice actors must work, a world in which producers and directors have a sense of what they want (i.e., "be more conversational"), and whether or not they are getting it, but lack the ability to guide the talent very far in precisely how to achieve it. But, as the author himself admits, "The purpose of this book is to explain what to do with your voice talent once you have it."

Douthitt outlines a "4-Point Plan to Success" at the outset of the book:

1. Competitive abilities (you are as good as the people already doing the work);

2. Proof of abilities (an outstanding demo tape);

3. Connection to the work (learning about jobs, primarily through an agent); and

4. Availability (you are close to the market and able to attend auditions, call-backs and recording sessions throughout the business day).

This theme is carried throughout the remainder of the text.

If there is an overall message to this book, it is, "Be realistic." Douthitt makes it clear that it takes a lot of commitment and dedication to succeed in this field. But he also makes it clear that lots of mere mortals are doing it.

Because of Douthitt's background as an engineer, the technical discussions in this book are accurate and helpful - which sets it apart from most other books on the subject. The book reads very well, no doubt reflecting the contribution of editor Tom Wiecks. The book provides depth in more specialized fields, such as industrial narration, that receive little notice elsewhere.

The author's sense of humor (he would probably call it healthy cynicism) is evident throughout. A priceless pair of diagrams on pages 87 and 88 depict recording session hierarchy: "how it's supposed to work" and "how it often works." The first diagram sets out a neat, orderly chain of command starting from client through agency people through producer to engineer to talent. The second, however, shows a chaotic arrangement of people and arrows, all of which point to the engineer and the talent. "Plan to do seven takes for every 'director' in the room," Douthitt dryly notes. (Later in the book, on page 204, he invites the reader to try voicing the same airline tag with 70 -- yes, 70 -- different one-word directions taken from actual studio sessions, including such helpful gems as "patriotic," "babyish," and "like a cat would say it." Talk about frying your brain!)

An excellent book and much-needed in the field.

5 out of 5 stars The "Bible" For The Voice-Over Profession.......2000-05-01

After reading and then re-reading Mr. Chris Douthitt's "Voiceovers: Putting Your Mouth Where The Money Is," I am pleased to have the opportunity to share my feelings regarding this wonderful, essential tool for the commerical voice talent. The voice-over profession is stimulating and exciting, but can be somewhat confusing for a beginnng and intermediate-level talent. Why? Because the majority of the information one needs to be a successful performer can be difficult to obtain. Mr. Douthitt gathers it all together for you, and puts it into an easy-to-understand format. I firmly believe this publication is THE textbook, the "Bible" for the voice-over business. And because this is a business, Mr. Douthitt is exceptionally candid about what one can expect regarding the commercial voice-over talent's moneymaking potential. The author wants the reader to really consider whether or not this profession is the right one for him/her (there is a considerable start-up cost involved--believe me, I found out quickly!), and provides advice on honing one's talents and abilities. "Voice-Overs: Putting Your Mouth Where The Money Is" gives practial, valuable advice on producing your demo tape; do's and dont's for the talent; what to expect at the recording session. The book also introduces the reader to the studio, and details the roles of all the professionals involved in creating a voice-over spot (from the writer to the engineer to the ad agency to the agent to the TALENT to the client). "The copywriter is the architect of the ad. The talent is the carpenter. The script is the blueprint. The studio engineer provides all the construction materials." Also being a writer, I LIKE that passage! Mr. Douthitt also provides sample scripts which he analyzes, and that the reader can practice. And, the glossary is extremely helpful. Before reading this book, I had voice-over training. However, this publication has proven to be an essential tool if I wish to be really successful. And, isn't that what you want? To conclude, this marvelous textbook is a witty, entertaining read. I sincerely hope I have the opportunity to work with the author one day. Mr. Douthitt--thanks for shining a bright light on the voice-over world!

3 out of 5 stars Good info, but beginners may want to look elsewhere.......1999-07-10

This has some excellent information on getting an agent, a demo tape, and some real inside dope on the business. It's also clear, and well-written. However, if you're like me--a complete novice--I'd suggest you look elsewhere. The authors (correctly) tell you to take voice lessons, and while they have a few helpful excerises, the book isn't much good for actually helping a beginner develop his or her talent. It's telling that the chapter on money comes two chapters before the one on "Getting Talented." In other words, the book is great for career advice and technical advice about the business, but not so great on helping one develop the tools to get there.

    Book Description

Sports fans everywhere have heard the roar of the crowd and the crunch of the pads and helmets. The people responsible for bringing them to life, however, are the announcers, men who pioneered and promoted the profession, bringing the heart and soul of the game to living rooms across America. Families would listen to the radio while these announcers created an emotional bond between themselves and their audiences. Hall of Famers, former players, and sportswriters--each had a love of the game. Their enthusiasm brought that love to the fans unable to be at the football field. They were the first Golden Voices of Football. Curt Gowdy, Russ Hodges, Howard Cosell, Keith Jackson and, many other legendary broadcasters are highlighted in this comprehensive book and audio collection. Fans can listen to the companion audio CD as they relive famous game calls, interviews, and insights into the profession of football broadcasting. From a job with no rules to becoming legends in their own right, these announcers built a legacy as much a part of football as the teams on which they reported.

I've been taking classes in NY and everything I'm learning is what is in this book! I recommend it if you're thinking about getting into the business. There are helpful websites listed in his book that I went to before I spent money on classes and I have been able to find out even more information. I was amazed at how much information is in here that instructors charge so much money for. Do it. The voice over world is yours.

4 out of 5 stars Freddie Bell Voice Over Artist.......2005-08-23

I ordered the book and the CD's in one package. Not only is the book entertaining and informative, I read it in a couple of hours and have already put into action some of the advice. As a veteran broadcaster who is transitioning into the voice-over business, I needed a plan of attack. In purchasing the material, I was looking for a resource guide and mentor. That's exactly what I've found. The principle reason Mr. Saulsberry is enjoying huge success is because he works hard, enjoys what he does and doesn't mind sharing the information with people like me, Freddie Bell. I believe that by following the suggestions he makes and appyling your own common sense will help anyone reach their goals. I'm banking on my voice with the guidance from Saulsberry book. For the novice and the veteran alike, this book is a must have. I am a real person and can be reached for validation at freddiebell@voiceunique.com

From the 1950s through 1997, Louis “Studs” Terkel, bestselling author of Hard Times, Working, The Great War, Coming of Age, and eight other books, hosted a daily one-hour show on WFMT Radio in Chicago. This nationally syndicated, Peabody Award-winning program was an ideal showcase for his curmudgeonly wit, his maverick opinions, and his genius as an interviewer.

The 48 interviews in this collection, span Terkel’s five decades on radio and encompass a wide range of entertainers, scientists, writers and thinkers, including Dorothy Parker, Pete Seeger, Bob Woodward, Simone de Beauvoir, and many more.

5 out of 5 stars THANK GOD FOR STUDS TERKEL!.......2007-02-07

Having grown up in Chicago and spent a chunk of my adult life there as well, perhaps the thing I miss most is Studs Terkel and WFMT, the best
FM station in the country. I learned as much about life and the never-ending struggle for human rights from Studs' interviews as I did from any
professor or priest. Hearing these wonderful chunks of those conversations again fills me with nostalgia and recharges my batteries for my own twilight struggle against the world's ills.

    5 out of 5 stars A pleasure.......2006-11-12

Memorable interviews with the most affable interviewer. A lovely way to spend some time.

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING LISTENING PLEASURE.......2005-06-26

Even today, when celebrity revelations droppeth like the gentle rain, Studs Terkel stands head and shoulders above other interviewers. He had a knack. He could get people to say things they hadn't planned on saying. Terkel knew precisely what to ask, and how to ask it. Those are my words - the Chicago Sun Times said it better:

"Studs Terkel (gets) people to say things in such a way that you know at once they have finally said their truth, and said it better than they ever believed they could say it."

Trained as a lawyer, experienced as an actor, and a best-selling author, Terkel spent half a century on his Chicago based Peabody Award winning syndicated radio program. He brought together people from all walks of life, artists, writers, philosophers, inventors, and visited with each of them as they recounted their triumphs and failures.

Now, 48 of these original interviews have been gathered for our enjoyment - it's a treat to hear the stories of those who influenced our world in their own voices. We hear R. Buckminster Fuller, Woody Allen, Gore Vidal, Eudora Welty, Dorothy Parker, Bertrand Russell, Leonard Bernstein, and a host of others.

    Exemplary listening pleasure!

    - Gail Cooke

Studs Turkel is a wonderful interviewer, and over the past five decades he has interviewed many of the great thinkers, writers, and doers of our time. The ones he chose for this collection include Aaron Copland, Oliver Sacks, Margaret Mead, Daniel Ellsberg, Maya Angelou, Pete Seeger, John Kenneth Galbraith, and dozens of others. All together, they provide a fascinating portrait of the last half of 20th century. Highly recommended!

    Book Description

Network operators are faced with the challenge of maximizing the quality of voice transmissions in wireless communications without impairing speech or data transmission. This book provides a comprehensive survey of voice quality algorithms, features, interactions, and trade-offs, at the device and system level. Using a practitioner rather than algorithm-designer angle, this book is unique. It elaborates on the root cause of impairments and ways for resolving them, as well as methodologies for measuring and quantifying voice quality before and after applying the remedies. The key issues are exemplified using case studies. Avoiding complex mathematics, the approach is based on real and sizable field experience supported by scientific and laboratory analysis. This title is suitable for practitioners in the wireless communications industry and graduate students in electrical engineering. Further resources for this title including a range of audio examples will be available online at www.cambridge.org/9780521855952.

Dr. Perry has written a great reference on voice quality issues found in real-world telecom networks. This book goes beyond the "can you hear me now?" level of network voice quality. His careful coverage of voice quality concepts will allow newcomers to grasp the key essentials. Sufficient references are provided to allow a "deeper dive" into more technical details if required. The book's website offers several audio WAV files to demonstrate the concepts presented in the book. He assesses the risks to voice quality with the migration to IP based voice transport.
