The Warrior's Book!.......2007-05-07
This is one of the best books I have ever read! If you are competitive and like the bulls and have a strong sense of teamwork, this is the best book to read! All I wanted to do was watch the greatest seasons of the Bulls and those amazing playoffs and championships they won!
Michael Jordan meets Zen .......2007-01-04
If you are into spiritual exploration and you love watching basketball then you will find this an amazing book. This book captures beatutifully how you can apply Zen Buddhist philosophies to daily life (although maybe coaching Michael Jordan is not ordinary daily life ...). Especially interesting if you want to understand how you can use Zen Buddhism to stimulate teamwork. Sacred Hoops gave me many ideas on which to reflect. I highly recommend it.
Not just for basketball fans.......2006-08-15
As a yoga instructor and athletic trainer who works with professional athletes, I wish I had found this book sooner. I just read it and plan to reread it again. Amazing. Absolutely thought-provoking. You'll find yourself thinking about this one in the shower, just contemplating Phil's wisdom and how you can apply it to your own life. Anyone considering or presently on a path to spirituality and self awareness--no basketball interest or experience required--should read this book. If you want to gain a better understanding of the value of staying present in the moment, I urge you to pick up this book and let Phil Jackson enlighten you. If I ever decide to lead yoga teacher trainings in the future, this will be required reading! --Dana Edison, author and creator of "Dana Edison's Yoga Is Not One Size Fits All Custom Practice Journal" and audio instruction series.
It brought me peace........2006-03-18
When I was going through a very hard time in my life, my boxing trainer recommended I read this book. I'm not a basketball fan and am not normally into self-help books either. Phil Jackson takes the reader down a spiritual road that overlaps with his career as a professional basketball coach. I've found some of his techniques and philosophies have brought great mental peace to me, while the stories of the professional sports business were interesting and entertaining.
Brutally honest.......2006-03-16
If you like a teaspoon of New Age mumbo jumbo combined with a mustachioed author's psycho-babble, I suggest you check out Star Jones new book. Phil Jackson has had greatness thrust upon him. Michael Jordan, Stacey King, Kobe Bryant, and Shaq are the reason we know his name. Not his Jerry Garcia, Phoenix University degree, dimestore analysis of the spiritual side of coaching and people management. Make him the coach of the Trailblazers and see how great he is.

Basketball and Life Lessons.......2007-06-29
Lonnie is a seventeen-year-old basketball player from Harlem. He wants to do something with his life but he hasn't really thought much beyond high school and basketball. This summer there is a huge tournament for teams throughout the city. Lonnie and his friends form a team, and are assigned a coach, a man named Cal whom Lonnie thinks is a worthless drunk. At first Lonnie even refuses to play, but then changes his mind and joins the team.
As the team starts practicing for the tournament, Lonnie ends up spending a lot more time with Cal, who is harder on him than on anyone else on the team. Lonnie comes to realize that Cal, a former NBA player who ruined his career by gambling, really thinks his basketball game has promise. Maybe it even has enough promise to get him noticed by college scouts.
I liked that the characters in this story all had faults; it made them much more engaging. You usually expect the coach in a story like this to be wise or to have learned from his mistakes, but Cal was still fighting his demons, which made him much more real.
Hoops.......2007-02-16
HOOPS
This story is about seventeen-year-old Lonnie Jackson who is a terrific basketball player who participated in a citywide basketball tournament of champions. Lonnie's coach Cal knows he can make it to the NBA if he doesn't pressure it. Cal knows because he once? Had A chance. Could Lonnie and his teammates blow a chance of a lifetime.
Hoop's is one of the best basketball books I've read yet. It will thrill you as you read through this book's pages at a time. This book will leave your moth wide open and surprised by the end of the book. Since this book was so good I would rate this book at the top.
Not Appropriate for Teens.......2007-02-06
This was on the board approved list for my school and I read it in hopes of teaching it to my class. Sex, drugs, cheating, stealing and alcohol...there is a good message, but it is hidden pretty deeply. I would let students read this if they are advanced in maturity and had a good set of values, otherwise I would not want my teens to read this.
Hoops.......2006-11-15
The book i read is called HOOPS by Walter Dean Myers. HOOPS is a good book about a boy named Lonnie trying to get to the NBA. It shows how difficult it is to get to the NBA. I think you should read HOOPS because it will give you knowledge of what you have to go thruogh to get to the NBA. Hoops is for all basketball lovers. If you want to learn more about HOOPS then read the book.
Hoops Is The Bestest Basketball Book In The World.......2006-11-03
The book Hoops is a great book for basketball players and watchers but be over 11 to read it cause its got so mild language and stuff.
All right the book is about this basketball team that has tons of great kids on there team like Lonnie,Paul,Sweet Man,Ox,and Harrison. There coaches name was Cal and in the book he sounds like a great coach. If you enjoy sports books then i recomend it.
Book Description
Why would a successful college basketball coach walk away from a lucrative job in America's most glamorous sport? The burned out Rus Bradburd, enamored with Ireland and its music, took a job coaching in the lowly Irish Super League, but was unprepared for what he found. Perplexed by the small town Tralee's Frosties Tigers--a cast of misfits and underachievers more concerned with their day jobs, Gaelic Football, and Guinness--he turned to traditional Irish music for wisdom and solace.
Paddy on the Hardwood is partly Rus Bradburd's story of his struggle to transform Tralee's Tigers. But it is also the tale of a man making peace with his own life and career.
"No reader will come away from this irresistible, honest, and deeply human account without a profound appreciation for Ireland and the beguiling power of its people and culture. Paddy on the Hardwood is a basketball book, to be sure, but also one about questing and, ultimately, finding. And it's all the richer for how it engages things that seem distant from sports, but in the end aren't so unrelated at all."--Alexander Wolff, Sports Illustrated senior writer and author of Big Game, Small World: A Basketball Adventure
"Paddy on the Hardwood is hilarious, heartbreaking, and touchingI couldn't put it down. I'm an avid reader, and it's the best sports book I've read in a long while."--Jerry West
A burned out basketball coach takes a job in Ireland and is surprised by what he finds.

If it's a great story.......2007-05-17
He's not Ernie Hemingway, but if you have a great story to tell, it doesn't matter. And he has a terrific story to tell.
Great fun........2007-02-16
A good read for those who like basketball. Music gets less attention, but the music teachers are interesting.
A Journey Well Worth Taking.......2006-10-21
Rus Bradburd's "Paddy on the Hardwood: A Journey in Irish Hoops" is a highly enjoyable book on many levels. Bradburd's story revolves around his love for basketball and traditional Irish music. In Ireland, not everyone (in fact, almost no one!) shares his passion for basketball; Bradburd's struggle for respect for his team, and his sport, are part of the journey. In contrast, Bradburd's efforts to learn and to master traditional Irish music is a challenge which arises within himself, and the best part of the journey may be his success in dealing with that challenge. This is a book which transcends its subject matter, one which you can (and will) appreciate whether or not you know (or care) anything at all about basketball or Irish fiddles. It's a well-crafted and well-written book, and a great read. Highly recommended!
Paddy's Magic.......2006-09-11
All good writers have a story to tell. Rus Bradburd does just that and brings you with him on this journey to Ireland. It is here that a universal story unfolds as you meet the people of Tralee, and where Bradburd has come to a crossroads in his own life: career, music, writing and a special romance.
Paddy's magic and mystery is in its subtle revelation that this story belongs to us all.
The author makes you feel his every frustration as he struggles to build a winning basketball team in the Irish Super League. And, how that daily grind seems to interfere with his other purposes for coming to Ireland: his music and writing.
But, you will also experience the camaraderie of the pubs and traditional Irish music as Bradburd ventures beyond his world of career and into the lives of Tralee's people.
There are many stories here. In the end, you will come to know them. And perhaps, we might come to discover ourselves again.
C.L. Spencer
Miami, Oklahoma
A Journey Worth Accompaniment.......2006-08-31
The book is an engaging, compelling, highly readable account full of the sights and sounds of Tralee, Ireland. Bradburd decides to leave his well-paying jobs as a college basketball coach in the U.S., for the relative obscurity and monetary scraps as a head coach in the Irish Super League.
The idea is -- as a coach in a league where the practice gyms are rented by the hour, the newspapers fail to mention even the most dramatic victories, and the best Irish-born players would rather sit the bench as brawny cheerleaders at Gaelic football matches -- he will find time to write and master his fiddle, and after the season, would be able to leave basketball behind.
For basketball fans, the book is an insightful exploration of one of the poorest professional leagues in the world, as well as a series of portraits of the players Bradburd comes to bench, fire, start, and, in some ways, rely on.
For music fans, we witness a short history of traditional Irish "tunes," and learn how tunes grow and change as they move from place to place. We also get to sit in on his sessions in the dark corners of Irish pubs, where the tables and bellies are full of pints of Guiness. And Bradburd writes so well we can hear the technical mastery of his friends and mentors, see their hands moving effortlessly over the instruments.
The story is one of transformation -- a certain kind of entrainment, as Bradburd discovers -- across the book, as he passes through the trials of coaching, and comes to find musical kindred spirits, and a personal one, too; even his prose seems to transform, from the sharp tones as he starts his journey, into a calm, more poetic voice as he finds -- most, if not all -- of what he went to look for in Tralee, Ireland.

a white feminist finds eye-opening.......2000-02-08
This white feminist found The Sacred Hoop eye-opening and mind-expanding. While I cannot presume to be able to truly understand tribal thinking, I nonetheless found the concepts and philosophies described here to be completely pertinent to my place in existence. I am struggling to realize my place in a multifaced, complex web-world and have never felt comfortable with the typical feminist need to stand out in the foreground. It is also very empowering to see that there have been many versions of woman-based cultures. Unlike those in Crete, for example, tribal cultures were fully functioning in North America less than 500 years ago! It is unfortunate (though not at all surprising, given the difficulty of writing about concepts in the language of the patriarchy) that this gospel of hope and renewal is not reaching many, many people--especially our young people in colleges and universities. Don't take this wrong, Paula Gunn Allen, but you go, girl!
Valuable but annoying........1999-01-11
Being a white male (although one who's interested in Native American literature) certainly influenced my reaction to this book. That said, I think it's invaluable reading--probably a "must read" for those really interested in the field of Native American studies. I found it extremely interesting and useful. I also found it unsettling and even offensive in places. In spite of attacking white culture for reducing everything to ethnocentric formulas (a point she illustrates very persuasively), Allen seems to me to do the same thing throughout the book. While criticizing white academics for robbing Native Americans of thier complexity as individuals, she tends to see every possible issue through a polarized perspective--Native American=Good, White culture=bad. Doesn't this, in fact, rob Native Americans of their complexity as individuals and lead to the very romanticizing that Allen objects to?
Still, as irritating as I find this reductive way of arguing, I have to admit that this is a very valuable book.
Simply Brilliant.......1998-12-17
As a young American Indian woman, reading PGA's book was like finding my own personal bible. Finally, someone who was telling me the same things about myself that my mother had taught me. Excellent chapters like "The Red Roots of White Feminism" and "When Strong Women Throw Down Bundles" are not to be missed. PGA your my shimasaani!
Book Description
In Blue Blood, veteran journalist and author Art Chansky examines the Duke-Carolina rivalry as it has evolved over the last fifty years. This is not the worn formula of a season inside a program; rather, its a detailed and colorful study of the greatest competition in college sports, which now pits two of the best coaches in the nation against each other. Its also a look at a maniacal subculture that has fans who camp out for weeks just to get tickets to the seasonal match-ups. And most important, its the story behind the story, with never-been-told details that could only be written by an insiderwith unparalleled access to both schoolswho has covered the rivalry for more than thirty years. Blue Blood is the first and only book to ever chronicle the past, present and future of what has become a cultural phenomenon in this country.
Customer Reviews:
Chansky's definitive take on the Tobacco Road rivalry.......2007-07-22
This completes Chansky's trilogy-of-sorts on North Carolina basketball; he had previously written "The Dean's List" and "Dean's Domain," both about former UNC Coach Dean Smith. In the time-honored tradition of "never throwing anything anyway," Chansky includes many of the same anecdotes that graced his earlier books, but, to be fair, he goes into more detail in most cases. He also surveys a wider field than previously, tracing the history of the Duke-UNC rivalry from the earliest times to the present (2004-05 season). There are some factual errors that might have been eliminated with greater editorial diligence, such as the misidentification of Jim Nantz as the lead announcer on the famous Duke-Kentucky East Regional final of 1992. (It was actually Verne Lundquist, and no, it's not that hard to check, since clips from that game appear constantly during CBS' broadcasts of Tournament action.) The book is very thorough and, though it displays a slight bias towards UNC, does do a reasonably even-handed job of detailing the highs and lows of the love-hate relationships between the geographical and athletic rivals. It's definitely a good choice for the college basketball fan's permanent library.
No Insights, No New Stories, and No Need to Buy.......2007-03-25
Recommendation: If you're shopping for a "starter" book for new basketball fan (say, an 11 year-old daughter or nephew), then Chansky's book covers all the bases. However, if you are familiar with the basic narrative, this book offers nothing of value. John Feinstein's Last Dance: Behind the Scenes at the Final Four touches briefly on the rivalry, but provides spectacular insight, interviews, and analysis in the NCAA Tournament.
Mr. Chansky missed an opportunity to chronicle the evolution of players, coaching philosophies, fans, and high profile college athletic departments with his pedantic recycling of the intertwined Duke and UNC basketball histories. This book reads like a college freshman term paper; the same formula for every chapter, no original source material, and an utter lack of analysis. With most the impact players from both programs still alive and lucid, Chansky could have interviewed Amaker, Bilas, both Capels, Cota, Hurley, Fox, Reid, Parks, Montross, etc and harvested their memories or impressions of how those two (or three) games per year changed the atmosphere of campuses, the adjoining towns, and their seasons for a given year. Instead, Chansky quoted a few program secretaries and called it a day. Those player insights would have provided added depth and detail to this shell of statistics and old Sports Illustrated stories. Instead, the reader churns through fluff and "classic" stories, but is left unfulfilled.
Balanced view of the rivalry.......2007-02-08
Even though it's written by a UNC grad, "Blue Blood" is a very interesting and seemingly balanced book on the UNC-Duke rivalry. As a Duke fan, I was afraid that this would be just another "we are superior because we are carolina" book, but it's not. Great insight.
Tar Heel Sports History Revealed.......2007-01-12
Blue Blood: Duke-Carolina by Art Chansky was requested by my husband for Christmas. He is really enjoying this book and even reads it aloud to me when some amazing facts unknown to us about Carolina and Duke are noted. We both have gleaned some very interesting information, laughed at funny situations and marveled at the actions of the people written about. Most all Carolina fans will truly enjoy reading and owning this book. Duke fans and other ACC schools can also experience the history and lore of these two great college basketball rivals!!!
Updated Paperback Even Better.......2006-12-06
As good as the original (hard cover) Blue Blood is, the paperback edition is even better because it updates (with a new Chapter 1 and Postscript) everything that happened in the rivalry since the book first came out in November, 2005 -- the entire 2006 season, including Carolina's stunning upset of Duke in Durham, the most recent recruiting news at both schools and an insightful explanation of how the Duke Basketball brand impacted the lacrosse scandal. Even for those who have the hard cover, the paperback is well worth the purchase and the read.

A Celebration of The Maryland Terrapins.......2007-03-08
In 2002 I had the honor of working with the legendary Johnny Holliday on his autobiography, "From Rock To Jock." This detailed account of the "Voice of The Terps" life was critically acclaimed as an entertaining and significant history of broadcasting, Top 40 radio, and sports through the eyes of Johnny. We became close friends during the two years we worked on "From Rock To Jock", and this friendship continued when we were asked to write "Hoop Tales," a very different book, with different goals.
For starters, "Hoop Tales" follows the publisher's format for this popular series. The recipe is assemble a collection of great pictures (and our book has some very good ones, several from Sports Illustrated, and the rest from UMD Hornbake Archives, the Athletic Dept, and personal collections), and select about ten stories that basketball fans will love.
I think we did that and much more. We uncovered new information, such as the earliest formation (and games) of the team; experiences of the veteran referees- in their words - of great players, games, and their interactions with Coaches' Bud, Lefty, and Gary. Coach Williams provides his overview of the turning points in the program's evolution. The chapter on Len Bias is Johnny's personal account of knowing Lenny, and describing his growth as a player and person over four years. Several Terp players have thanked us for this positive portrayal. Coaches Bud, Lefty, and Gary, and many famed players - from Keith Booth to Walt Williams- contributed time and candid accounts to "Hoop Tales," and the greatest living sports writer, John Feinstein, wrote the Foreword.
"Hoop Tales" is a written celebration of the Maryland Terrapins with great photos. I'm giving my own co-authored book a five star rating here - and I know some readers will be critical of this self-promotion - but I can't post this author's info without a rating. And we are very proud of this book and we hope Maryland fans will support it. Thanks, and GO TERPS!!
Not Much New Information.......2007-03-04
This very short, very readable history of Maryland University's men's basketball program is an enjoyable read, especially for Maryland basketball fans. That said it also has some drawbacks.
First, there really are not a lot of details here. I didn't really learn anything I didn't already know about the program except maybe some of the items in the first chapter about the program's origins and early years. For example, the chapter on Len Bias is short and non-analytical. I know much, much more about that sad chapter in Maryland's history than is presented in this book - which basically is "it's a sad story, Len Bias was a great player, it hurt the program." Ditto the run to their first Final Four and subsequent NCAA Championship Season.
This book is probably basically what it's supposed to be, a short synopsis of the team's history and is probably better suited for pre-teens and teens than adults who have followed the program for years. Overall, I can't say I was disappointed, but I didn't really get anything out of reading this book.
Here's a Winner!.......2007-01-27
Award winning broadcaster Johnny Holliday can add another title and experience to his long and illustrious career - Author!
In "Hoop Tales: Maryland Terrapins Men's Basketball" Holliday, and Stephen Moore, takes the reader inside the Maryland "huddle" to gain insight into one of the most storied programs in college basketball.
As a reader, one can sense the passion Johnny Holliday has for the program, and written words are as enthusiastic as his play-by-play call, or as sweet as the swish of a long jumper.
Len Clark
A great read for Johnny and Bball fans.......2006-11-09
"Voice of the Terps" broadcaster Johnny Holliday has written this book from the heart. It's an often humorous but always sincere account of Maryland Terp basketball memories that stand out as Holliday's favorites. It is very selective but very cool, and the photos are varied and add much to the enjoyment of this book. A few things make Johnny's book worth having for every college basketball fan: a chapter on many of the veteran referees who were in the middle of the action. Their memories, quotes, opinions, etc are interesting. Coach Gary Williams obviously spent time with Holliday and his co-author Stephen Moore on chapters discussing program "turning points" and the 2002 championship, and Coaches Lefty and Bud give their views as well. Dozens of players talk with Holliday about their favorite moments. Holliday was also friends with Len Bias, and the chapter on Bias is very moving. Many fans are also featured. All in all, I think this is a book for every Maryland Terp fan.

Book Description
For nearly five years Arthur Agee's and William Gates' remarkable lives were chronicled by a team of filmmakers. Roughly 250 hours of film were devoted to their journeys from the playgrounds to high school competition to college recruitment and -- whittled down to three hours -- it became the award-winning film Hoop Dreams. Now journalist Ben Joravsky vividly brings to light all the richness and subtlety of their stories, and the impact their aspirations had on themselves, their families and their relationships. It is an intimate look, complete with an up-to-date epilogue on the latest developments in their lives.

A nice story for young men of any ethnicity.......2007-10-04
This book is a story of a basketball player who makes his dreams come true with persistence and a ambitious will. It does have some profane words that come about sporadically as your read but the story is not consumed by them. They are in there though so beware if a young child wants to read this story.
Greater Insight into the Hoop Dreams Movie.......2007-06-22
This is excellent reading if you enjoyed the movie. It just gives the reader a deeper look into the lives of Arthur and William. There is so much detail we didn't get in the movie. In the book, we learn about additional family members and best friends. Who knew William lived with his sister when he started attending St. Joes? We found out more about race relations at St. Joes and that William had janitorial duties at the school to offset his financial obligations. There's more to how William felt about Coach Pingatore. We learn more about Arthur and his relationship with his father. Best of all, there is more about their lives once they begin college. It's a must read for everyone who enjoyed the movie.

Two kids dream of playing basketball is offered a chance to shine. Who will succeed, and who will fail? It all begins in the city Of Chicago; two young athletes are offered to play basketball at a private school. This school is known as a basketball powerhouse. The often required pay for enrollment but since these gifted athletes play basketball and play it well the school pays for the expense. The only requirement to get this scholarship is to maintain a passing GPA.
The young boys by the Name of William Gates and Arthur Aggee are in a documentary of the life in the hood trying to succeed at basketball and life. Arthur comes from rough life of abusive, drug dealing, never there dad. He struggles to adapt to the private school. He soon is released due to failing grades and no money to maintain him enrolled. Arthur returns to his former high school. He never gives up his dream and works on every aspect of his life school, family, basketball, and most importantly his belief in himself. While all the hard times in his life he becomes stronger at basketball proving many wrong.
While Arthur was struggling at the beginning William gates was competing highly at the varsity level as a freshmen. He played 3 strong years for the school school. Offered many scholarships William comes to the point where the S.A.T.S gets in his way of his dreams of playing college ball. His final year as a senior playing basketball was cut short with injury to his knee. Rehabbing his knee while his teams try's to return to state. Will William Gates be able to play again in high school let alone play in college?
The most inspirational part of the story was when Arthur's father really distracts Arthur's focus on basketball and school, with abuse and violent drug dealing lifestyle. He took money from the family and left them with out electricity for weeks. Many troubling times was brought to Arthur but the never gave up or even gave in on his lifetime goal. He studied in the dark and took care of his family. Arthur rose above all negatives in his life and managed to stay focused. He completed his goals. That really inspired me! It taught me no matte what the situation is make best of it and never give up.
The main theme of this book is clearly to never give up. Like what I wrote in the above paragraph, many obstacles might get in your way but, if you're positive and focuses things will workout. Hard work and dedication does pay off in the end.
This book is a book I really encourage people to read. It teaches you the lifestyle of kids in the hood. The troubling time many of those young kids go threw really show you in this book. Life lessons are addressed in many different ways. The kid's choices, the downfall in family, grades, collage, and how it affects you and others. People who have trouble in believing in them selves should read this, and it would make them stronger.

Hoop Dreams was probably one of the best books I've ever read. I don't think I would have liked it so much if it hadn't been based on a true story. This book is about two inner city kids from Chicago who aspire to play in the NBA. Although the odds aren't in their favor (only one out of every 7,600 high school players make it to the NBA) they still live for basketball. Without basketball these two boys would have nothing to them. Ben Joravsky does a good job of re-telling the story and showing all the problems these boys faced in there life. If it wasn't for basketball they probably would be out on the street trying to make a living. Throughout the story you feel as if you get closer and closer with the characters, and since it's spanned out over four years, it's as if they are growing and maturing right in front of you. Listening to Arthur's part of the story always kept me amused because he's a funny kid that everybody seems to like. William's story is focused more on the St. Joseph basketball team because that's pretty much all he cares about. This book was definitely a good read and I recommend it to anybody who likes books. Not just sports books either because this book goes beyond the boundaries of sports and is a compelling story about two inner city kids who defied the odds.
