5 out of 5 stars Take a Trip With River Thunder.......2007-06-14

"They are calling it a flood, some of the highest water anyone's ever seen." This was a quote at a very on the edge of your set. They were just about to go down the river when they hired one of the other groups talking about the river level.
River thunder is a book that will keep you on the edge of your set. There are 6 teenage kids that are going down the Grand Canyon. Jessie, Troy, Adam, Star, Rita, and Pug were the kids that were the main characters in this book. Jessie was one of the people that was rowing one of the boats, Troy was the other person that was rowing the other boat. Rita was kind of like the tuff girl. Pug was the trouble maker of the group. Adam was a karate person. Then there was Star that was the down to earth girl that was a hippy.
This book was mainly about trust and friendship. In The River Thunder it shows that trust is one of the most important things is because you have to trust each other in order to make it down the river in one peace.
The reason that I like this book is because that it always keeps you on the edge of your set you will never won't to put the book down. This is one of the best books that I have read, it is the only book that I have read this year. If you are a person that likes adventure then this book is for you. I don't like to read but when I started to read this book I could not put it down.

4 out of 5 stars The Great River.......2006-04-24

I read the book River Thunder by Will Hobbs. It's about a girl named Jessie, her friends and she took a trip on down to Lee's Ferry to ride the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Her friends and she went down about a year ago and never got to ride the river, so this time they can't wait. They took off on down the river and everything was calm. About two days later down the river is where they ran into trouble. You are going to have to read the rest of this book to find out what happens.
The part that was one of my favorite parts was when they started down river with all their supplies because I was amazed how much stuff they took with them.
I would recommend this book to somebody that likes the outdoors and have read other books by Will Hobbs. You should like this book if you liked the other books Will Hobbs has written. This book at the beginning is a little boring.

4 out of 5 stars river thunder.......2006-01-30

River Thunder by will hobbs is written as as a realistic fiction. Its about some friends that go white water rafting in the calorado river. Jessie is the main character and has to overcome her fears of flipping over in her raft.
The plot of the story is to try to liver going through the big rapids at record levels. If one of them were to get flipped over they would iether die or get siriuosly hurt.
I liked this book and think it would be good for 5-7th graders. I liked it because i always thought it would be cool to go white water rafting and beacause it is an action adventure book.

5 out of 5 stars river thunder.......2006-01-11

If you are one of those people who do not like adventure books, I would suggest you stop reading my review. But if you like those kinds of books keep reading-I have a wonderful surprise.

This is a great book about teamwork. Six kids want to go to the Grand Canyon to go white water rafting. They want to run the big rapids: Granite, Hermit, Crystal and Lava Falls on the Colorado River. Jessie (the main character) has always dreamed of this adventure. In the end the river will be very challenging.

In this book there is much suspense, whether they will survive or DIE. I think will Hobbs is my favorite author now that I have read so many of his books. I think the end of the book is great and nothing could be changed from my standpoint. But if you are craving some adventure you should read this book.

Will Hobbs does not look like a very adventurous man. But I can tell you one thing he writes a GREAT adventure book. He has a whole series of great books some greater than others, but I like them all. He also wrote Downriver the companion for River Thunder. If you like this book you definitely need to read more of his books.

5 out of 5 stars River Thunder Book Review.......2005-11-26

The Grand Canyons, known for its thrashing waters, outrageous falls, and destructive obstacles, will put two young, yet skilled rafters and their friends on the ultimate test for survival. River Thunder, written by Will Hobbs, is probably one of the most thrilling and adventurous tales ever told. Jessie, the narrator and also one of the main characters, tells an amazing story about when she receives an invitation from a good friend from the past, Al. Knowing that she would never reject this chance of a lifetime, he sent a letter requesting her to participate in a breath-talking boat trip through the Great Canyon. But little do they know, this whole trip was a set up. What will happen next?
After receiving the invite, Jessie quickly packs up her personal belongings and ruches over to the Grand Canyon. Soon after her arrival, she finds all of her friends from the last trip there too, Pug, Star, and Rita. As they were chatting away, one of them suddenly spot Troy, the disastrous cause of their last trip, walking towards them, everyone turned quiet. Troy later reveals that he had sent the letters provoking them to come because he wanted to make it up to them because of the last trip. Everyone agreed on one condition, he had to change his snobby attitude. Later joined by Adam, another one of last trip's members, the crew has to pull together, cooperate, and complete the task as one.
Along their trip, they meet a tourist group let by a few professional rafters called the Canyon Magic. After, Jessie becomes friends with Kate, the leader of Canyon Magic. Kate says that they should look out for each other and if Jessie and her friends have any problems, just tell them. Jessie learned a lot of new techniques from Canyon Magic, new moves, new facts, and lots of other important things.
Although Jessie has a few bails, she still keeps her spirit high but to complete the course will not only take that, they will all need courage. Jessie once said that, if sound of the river thunder could kill, they would already be dead. The story grows more intense, things change, and secrets reveal themselves.
I would recommend River Thunder to the people who like stories that are full of action and adventures. I finished this book in a very short period of time because every chapter ends in an intense moment and it is impossible to put that bookmark into the book. In my spare time, I would always take out this book and read, although television is my main entertainment resource. Everybody knows River Thunder, because this book is truly amazing.

Novelist Ted Dekker spins an action-packed story of drug cartels, the CIA, and the power of God to redeem tragedy for good in his inspirational thriller Thunder of Heaven. Life in Venezuela holds nothing but good things for Tanya Vandervan, her missionary family, and her love interest, the musclebound Shannon Ritcherson, who lives with his parents on an adjoining coffee plantation. When terrorists take over the land, both families are murdered and Tanya and Shannon believe each other to be dead. Grieving her losses, Tanya moves to the United States, where she changes her identity and seeks to lay her nightmarish past to rest. Years later, Tanya is inexorably pulled back to Venezuela by visions from God, and finds that Casius, an assassin who has his own agenda for revenge, may hold the key to questions about her past and her future. Dekker relies on a fast-paced plot rather than finely crafted prose to move his story along, and those who like their novels served up with plenty of heroics and a dash of romance will find this an engaging tale. --Cindy Crosby

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-07

Words don't do Ted Dekker justice I love all his books! This was one of those books once you pick up it is so hard to put down!!

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Thought Provoking.......2006-12-10

I have several Ted Dekker novels and they are all entertaining and thought provoking. 'Thunder Of Heaven' is no exception.

Dekker has blended an action plot involving terrorists with a nuclear device, romance, and spiritual themes. I am not one who enjoys romance, but the author does it in a way that is not obnoxious or overdone.

The action rolls along at a good pace and keeps the reader's interest throughout.

There was one error that should have been avoided. This may be somewhat of a spoiler so read further at your own risk. When one of the characters is imprisoned for a terrorist plot, he is located in the 'Canyon City Correctional Facility'. A participant in international terrorism would not be incarcerated in a local or state facility. It is a federal crime so he would be in a federal prison. With the type of crime and skill set/threat level possessed by this person, he would likely be housed in a United States Penitentiary (USP). This may not be a huge issue, but I think that technical accuracy is important in a good novel.

In spite of that one issue, I would recommend this book as well as any others I have read by Dekker. He is a highly skilled author who keeps one's attention.

5 out of 5 stars Changed My View of Christian Novels.......2005-12-09

Allow me to be honest: I resisted reading Christian fiction for a long time because I thought it would be, well, boring. I'm a Christian, but sermons are for the pulpit, not the printed page. Or so I thought. Thunder of Heaven completely sideswiped me with a great opening, a fast pace, and an interesting cast of characters who pop with realism. My favorite is Casius, a CIA assassin. The book follows him and the daughter of two married missionaries as they grapple with the slaughter of their parents and try to stop a terrorist attack. The jungle setting is a cool stage for this story to play out. The only time I realized I wasn't reading a thriller shaped by any of the great writers of our time is when the author dropped in a spiritual insight or two-and even those were interesting. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars 2nd place out of 3.......2005-12-06

Thunder of Heaven is better than Heaven's Wager yet not as great as When Heaven Weeps. Now of course this is all relative to your kind of story. Thunder of Heaven is a shorter story that has more action than the previous 2. It takes place in a jungle and that setting alone creates a great plot. I don't know if Ted intended a twist in it or not but after the first attack on the homes I knew who was who in the future. The surprise wasn't as big as say Thr3e was...but again, Ted himself has said that he writes different kinds of stories each time. He's almost like the book version of M. Night Shaymalan(sp?)

4 out of 5 stars Exciting!.......2005-01-24

I really enjoyed this novel. This is the first book I've read by Dekker and I found him to be an excellent read. It delievers a good blend of action, revenge, romance, and religion. I also liked the fact that the story was told from most of the character's point of view. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I'm not really religous and that whole "love of God" thing held no meaning for me. Altogether a great story with some issues about terrorism that hit close to home.

The squat river gunboats of the Civil War may have lacked the sleek majesty of oceangoing frigates, but undoubtedly they helped hammer home the North's victory as they successfully blasted their way up and down the Mississippi River. Jack D. Coombe presents the definitive account of these ironclad and wood-hulled warriors in the young country's western waterways, including the campaigns against Fort Donelson, New Orleans, and Vicksburg. The Union essentially built an inland navy, which pounded the Confederacy's heavily fortified towns and tried to dodge its mines. (Interesting piece of trivia: the Star of the West, the merchant ship attacked by Confederate batteries as it tried to reinforce Fort Sumter in January 1861 [the first hostile shots of the war], was later captured by Texans and converted into a rebel river steamboat.) Coombe argues that Federal control of the Mississippi made the South's defeat inevitable. His case is convincing, and his book is attractive--it includes dozens of black-and-white photos, plus several maps. It's one of the best naval histories of the Civil War available. --John J. Miller

    Book Description

    A new kind of war

In 1861 the Confederacy was protected on its flank by the Mississippi River. And the Mississippi was protected by a devil's gauntlet of Rebel fortresses and shore batteries, preventing the Union from sending troops and supplies up and down the river. With Grant determined to strike a land blow through Vicksburg, the Mississippi had to be won. To achieve its goal, the Union forces unleashed a deadly new breed of fighting ships, and a desperate Confederacy answered back.

For a year and a half the Mississippi and its tributaries and bayous ran with blood, as ironclads and wooden-hulled vessels clashed in a maelstrom shot through with cannon, mortar, and gunfire from the shore. A meeting of raw human courage with advancing naval technology, the battles of the Mississippi, from the Gulf of Mexico to Vicksburg, were some of the fiercest--and least known--in American naval history, yet some of the most crucial of the Civil War. Now Jack D. Coombe tells the thrilling story of the men, the vessels, and the battles that would help decide the fate of a nation.

1 out of 5 stars Sentence Fragments and Silly........2003-10-27

I have read 60-70 books on the Civil War. This one is awful. One wonders how long it was researched (1-2 weeks?) or why the publisher did not have it proof read. It is a simple attempt to capitalize on the current, renewed interest in the Civil War. Save your money.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-03-18

Disappointing. Nothing new in it. Draggy reading. The whole thing was done much, much better by Fletcher Pratt in his 1956 "Civil War on Western Waters" (still turns up in used book stores, and well worth the search). There's no indication in Coombe's book that he was aware of Pratt's little masterpiece.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing new here.......2000-05-20

Most people with a decent collection of Civil War naval history will have almost every source used by Mr. Coombe.

One wonders why Mr. Coombe wrote this book. There are no new conclusions drawn, no new information brought to light. A better written account of the use of the gunboats can be found in GUNS ON WESTERN WATERS, a book published in 1949. The story of USS Cairo, which was still on the bottom of the Yazoo River when Gosnell wrote GUNS ON WESTERN WATERS, is retold here, but a much better account is found in Edwin C. Bearss' HARDLUCK IRONCLAD.

This is the most general type of history and will be of little interest to anyone with more than a passing interest in the period and no other available source.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Summary of the River battles in the West.......1999-05-13

This book offers the reader a general overview of the Federal campaign in the West using the great water-ways to cut the Confederacy in half. The author presents a well told and interesting story, covering the river craft and tactics used by both sides.

Overall I found it a half decent book to read but it does not offer an in-depth account of the battles and campaigns fought to gain Vicksburg. If that's what your after you will have to look else where but the book is well suited for a general reader.

4 out of 5 stars Vicky and Father John on the trail of diamonds.......2007-06-05

I really like this series, and Father John and Vicky are two of my favourite sleuths. The descriptions of the scenery in Wyoming around the Windy River Reservation are breathtaking. I realize that Windy River Reservation is fictional, but Wyoming isn't, and it's a place I'd like to visit sometime. The mystery starts with the supposed suicide of a young Indian man. He apparently jumped off a cliff while he was seeking a dream quest. Father John knows it's not suicide, since no Indian would kill himself in a sacred place, but he has a hard time convincing the authorities. In the meantime Vicky is pursuing her own investigation in Denver when a man she is supposed to meet is run down deliberately on his way to a meeting with her. It turns out that the two murders are linked and Father John and Vicky pursue their investigations separately while keeping in touch by phone. This is a fast-moving story, that has a wonderful nail-biting ending (or two endings). And the bits of Arapaho culture are still there, salted throughout the book.

3 out of 5 stars Be Careful Where You Meditate........2005-05-06

Some mysterious deaths, starting with young Duncan Grover from Denver (who'd journeyed to Bear Lake Valley on a vision quest) upset the status quo among the inhabitants of the Wind River Indian Reservation, located thirty miles north of Denver. A medicine man (shaman), Gus, tries to persuade the natives that evil spirits sent by the Thunder order had murdered (or at least caused) the death. He convinced the police that it was just a chance happening, a suicide.

However, there had been a witness to the tragic death who gave details in a confessional to the Irish priest, which is considered 'confidentail' information, not to be repeated even to the police. Thus, Father O'Malley finds himself in a dilemma.

Lexcon has found methane gas in different spots throughout the Reservation, and the "Boss' thought that Grover must have discovered what was going on. Why else would he camp out so long on that cliff, observing things from on high? He'd been deep in meditation with no food and was lightheated and unobservant as he walked toward the edge of the cliff. The police had determined it had been a case of suicide and not accidental, and no longer investigated. Actually, he had been hit in the side of the head with an iron rod by these underlings and thrown over the cliff below the crude carving (looks like an alien) called Thunder in the boulder. He didn't know what hit him or why!

Only after the confession, did the possibility of murder surface. Vicky is summoned via an anonymous phone call, but the caller was killed in a hit-and-run accident before she could get there from Denver. When it comes to big oil companies, anybody is expendable. For this story, Ms. Coel sought the services and expertise of geologists and an archaeologist.

She has written a series which includes THE EAGLE CATCHER, THE GHOST WALKER, THE STORY TELLER, THE DREAM STALKER, and THE LOST BIRD. More recently, she has released WIFE OF MOON, EYE OF THE WOLF, and THE TIVOLI.

4 out of 5 stars Violent death in a sacred place.......2004-01-01

The Arapahos on the Wind River Reservation are shocked to hear that one of their own has committed suicide while on a vision quest in a place that is sacred to the Indians. Their doubt is reinforced when their priest, Father John, is visited in the confessional by a man who says that his boss killed the Indian. Meanwhile Arapaho attorney, Vicky Holden, who has moved to Denver in order to reduce her attraction to Father John, receives a phone call from a man who wants to meet with her and discuss a matter of concern about the reservation. As she is going to meet with him, he is killed in what is seemingly a hit-and-run accident. Even though these two friends are far apart, their two cases begin to intersect and they share information which will help them solve the mystery. Author Cole inserts some interesting moments in her two characters' lives, such as Vicky's son returning to Denver to live near her and Father John's problems with his assistant when a young woman sues him for sexual assault. The books in this series are all well-written and can be counted on to provide a good read.

3 out of 5 stars Unique detection team pursues killers in big sky country.......2002-08-16

This mystery novel has two interesting features: its spacious settings in Colorado and Wyoming, and its detective team of an American Indian woman and a Catholic priest. Both these lead characters are sympathetic. Indian legends and a secret revealed in the confessional play parts in this story, which is competently told. On the down side, the scheme that drives the murders is not particularly original. The fortuitous intervention of a male friend saves the female sleuth from violence, a much overused convention. It would have been more interesting to read about how a plucky woman outsmarted the bad guys.
