In this sequel to the Victorian fantasy A Great and Terrible Beauty, Gemma continues to pursue her role as the one destined to bind the magic of the Realms and restore it to the Order--a mysterious group who have been overthrown by a rebellion. Gemma, Felicity and Ann, (her girlfriends at Spence Academy for Young Ladies), use magical power to transport themselves on visits from their corseted world to the visionary country of the Realms, with its strange beauty and menace. There they search for the lost Temple, the key to Gemma's mission, and comfort Pippa, their friend who has been left behind in the Realms. After these visits they bring back magical power for a short time to use in their own world. Meanwhile, Gemma is torn between her attraction to the exotic Kartik, the messenger from the opposing forces of the Rakshana, and the handsome but clueless Simon, a young man of good family who is courting her. The complicated plot thickens when Gemma discovers a woman in Bedlam madhouse who knows where to find the Temple; Ann shows signs of being enamored of Gemma's loutish brother Tom, and their father's addiction to laudanum lands him in an opium den. A large part of the enjoyment of this unusual fantasy comes from the Victorian milieu and its restrictive rules about the behavior of proper young ladies, as contrasted with the unimaginable possibilities of the Realms, where Gemma has power to confront gorgons and ghosts and the responsibility to save a world. (Ages 12 and up) --Patty Campbell

Book Description

Gemma Doyle is looking forward to a holiday from Spence Academy—spending time with her friends in the city, attending balls in fancy gowns with plunging necklines, and dallying with the handsome Lord Denby. Yet amid these distractions, her visions intensify—visions of three girls dressed in white, to whom something horrific has happened that only the realms can explain.

The lure is strong, and soon Gemma, Felicity, and Ann are turning flowers into butterflies in the enchanted world that Gemma takes them to. To the girls' great joy, their beloved Pippa is there as well, eager to complete their circle of friendship.

But all is not well in the realms—or out. Kartik is back, desperately insisting to Gemma that she must bind the magic, lest colossal disaster befall her. Gemma is willing to comply, for this would bring her face-to-face with her late mother's greatest friend, now Gemma's foe—Circe. Until Circe is destroyed, Gemma cannot live out her destiny. But finding Circe proves a most perilous task. . . .

This sumptuous companion to A Great and Terrible Beauty teems with Victorian thrills and chills that play out against the rich backdrop of 1895 London, a place of shadows and light . . . where inside great beauty can lie a rebel angel.

5 out of 5 stars Anxious For the Third Book, Yet Hate To See the Trilogy End..........2007-09-11

I am (by far) no longer a teenager, and I don't usually read YA books (just never really thought about it before). Further, I don't usually even read Fantasy--except that I have read the first 4 Harry Potter books, of course, because, at the time my son was reading them and he insisted that I read them too. And I admit that I thoroughly enjoyed them! HOWEVER, I must say that I absolutely enjoyed the first book of this trilogy, "Great and Terrible Beauty" even MORE!!! I then ran right out and bought the sequel, "Rebel Angels", and loved it just as much!! I have already told my husband and kids that I want the third book of the trilogy (The Sweet Far Thing) for Christmas (even though it's release date is set for AFTER Christmas--I simply suggested to them to pre-order it for me and make that my gift). I can't wait!

HERE'S SOME ANTICIPATED NEWS FOR FANS OF THIS TRILOGY: I just found out that the movie adaptation of "Great and Terrible Beauty" is in production (Mel Gibson productions), and is set for release sometime in 2008!!!

Unfortunately, as much as I hate to be a pessimist, I rather wonder if the movie could hold up to the book. In most cases, it seems that whenever books are made into movies, it's always lacking and often a disappointment. The book is always better, and I worry that such will be case here. One's own imagination is always better than the movie, and each of us visualize the books in our own unique ways. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if it can work on the big screen...

5 out of 5 stars An incredible novel, a must-read for all fans of fiction and magic!.......2007-09-09

Libba Bray's novel Rebel Angels was a stunning sequel to her first book, A Great and Terrible Beauty. It was filled with suspense and mystery; once I set down to read it, it wouldn't let me go until the last page. Even at the end, it left me hungering for the next book, The Sweet Far Thing, which releases in December 2007.
The story begins with a prologue from the point of view of Kartik, a gypsy member of a group of questionable motives called the Rakshana and a love interest of the protagonist, Gemma. It is interesting insight on a character whose thoughts we didn't get to see in A Great and Terrible Beauty, and the reader gains clarity and insight into the Rakshana's inner workings. However, when chapter 1 comes, the focus is back on Gemma and her friends, now on Christmas holiday from their boarding school. Haunted by strange dreams, Gemma investigates and unlocks secrets about her mother, about her enemies, and about the strange dreamlike realms her friends and she travel to. The book switches between views of the realms and their real lives, where typical teenage problems occur such as romantic relationships, prejudice and its effects, and substance abuse.
In conclusion, I highly recommend Rebel Angels. Libba Bray transports the reader into Victorian times, an all girls boarding school, and mystical realms without losing a bit of credibility along the way. Her characters are believable, reacting to the situations in different but equally realistic ways. They are not perfect, all possessing unique flaws that make them more interesting to read about, but they are not so flawed that they cause the reader to dislike them. It is a thoroughly enthralling novel, and I suggest everyone who has read A Great and Terrible Beauty read the sequel.

5 out of 5 stars rebel angels.......2007-09-08

"Rebel Angels" strongly continues the saga of Gemma Doyle, begun in "A Great & Terrible Beauty." In Bray's second installment, Gemma's friendships are tested, & the magic of the realms is given more shape. As in the first installment, "Rebel Angels" deals with social attitudes in the Victorian period, which is a great plus. The characters of Ann & Felicity are the main players in the social commentaries, & they end "Rebel Angels" with greater depth than before. Felicity, in particular, turns into a more sympathetic character.

In the way of magic, Gemma's task becomes more defined, something I greatly appreciated after feeling that the magic was too vague in "A Great & Terrible Beauty." This time, the story was truly suspenseful, & the ending was a great shocker. I'll surely buy "The Sweet Far Thing" in hardback.

Thought this one started a little slow but really picked up towards the end. I am looking forward to the sequel.

5 out of 5 stars Review for Rebel Angels.......2007-07-14

Between a Great and Terrible Beauty and Rebel Angels, I'd have to say Rebel Angels so far is my favorite out of this series. Our favorite characters are brought back from the last novel and are just as wonderful and well developed as ever.
This novel is full of mystery and wonder and it certainly keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end! The imagery and romance in this novel is also wonderful, and it definitely pulls you into another place and time.
I absolutely love this novel and I hope you all enjoy just as much as I have.

5 out of 5 stars Very amusing and thoughtful........2007-06-10

I had to give this wonderful book 5 stars even though there are some flaws in the plot that are especially evident toward the end of the novel. HOwever, it is a delightful read, full of history, and philosophy, and base instincts wrapped up as academic intellectual whimsey.

The beautiful, brilliant and wealthy Maria Theotoky is a Ph.D. graduate student who becomes involved in an interesting academic power struggle for both her affections and for a discovered manuscript from the Middle Ages. He major professor, Clem Hollier; another professor who narrates much of the book, the Reverend, Simon Darcourt; a renegade gay dope-addict monk, Brother Parlabane; and a bright young billionaire, Francis Cornish, all compete for her mind, her attention, her love and finally, her hand in marriage.

Clever, witty, intelligent, absurd, and insightful are the odd mix that describes this book. It is Jungian in it symbolism but also very knowing of university politics and ambitions. It is amusing and thoughtful, entertaining and stimulating. It is a winner.

5 out of 5 stars Serendipity........2006-08-04

I was at my favorite second hand bookstore, and picked The Rebel Angels up on a whim. I had been looking for something that I could not find. I honestly no longer remember what I was originally looking for-- nor do I know what possessed me to pick this little Davies novel from the shelf. I can only tell you that I am glad that I did.

The Rebel Angels is everything I like in a novel. Academics, art, philosophy, history and romance-- all tied up in a witty and well-written package. I would call it a cozy for intellectuals, but that would be unfair and making it sound a little bit more trivial than it is. Still, there is something to the description. It made me feel good to read it. It manages to convey experience without ever falling prey to cynicism. This is no mean feat.

When Parlabane comes back, Maria Theotoky is not quite sure what it is going to mean for her and her desired romance with her professor/advisor Clem Hollier. She only knows that once she meets him, she does not like him, and she does not trust the influence that he will have on her future.

The Rebel Angels is told by turns from the point of view of Maria and Reverend Simon Darcourt. Although the shifting voices took some getting used to, the device worked well and by the end of the book I found nothing jarring about the transitions.

Highly recommended, particularly if academic fiction is one of your interests.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Novel?.......2003-11-08

The Rebel Angels immediately entered my personal canon of favorite works of literature. Could it be the perfect novel? It features astounding characters, well defined and memorable (especially the unforgettable John Parlabane, almost as singular a character as Liesl in Davies' Deptford Trilogy). It features a page turning plot. I was initially hoping for a literary mystery, along the lines of Eco, when the "lost manuscript" is introduced. The plot doesn't exactly lead that way, but creates its own twists and turns, both comic and tragic.

Davies' fine novel is an erudite display of knowledge, philosophy, emotion. There are no blacks and whites, nor even shades of grey. Each character is peppered alternately both black and white...each an incredibly real person encompassing friendship and selfishness, good and evil.

This is the kind of novel you feel better for having read. It impressed me on each page; a great work of literature as well as a very enjoyable read.

4 out of 5 stars Good Characters and a Good Foundation for the Trilogy.......2003-10-28

The Rebel Angels starts off Robertson Davies's Cornish Trilogy by introducing us to a cast of characters and a mood that are the raw material of the collection of related stories. Davies is an author who utilizes a palette of archetypes, applying them again and again in successive snippets and passages. This first book of the trilogy serves as a kind of under-painting for the books that follow. It sets the stage and lays a foundation. But, like all under-painting, it is incomplete in itself. It needs the detail that comes from what follows. In a sense, then, this book is not truly complete apart from the other components of the trilogy. But, that said, in no way should the reader be dissuaded from reading this novel, for the rewards are deeper than the limitations.

Davies gives the reader a rich feast of characters and experiences, heightened and exaggerated, but never untrue. His pages welcome us into reflection upon the common chords of life found mirrored back to us by somewhat uncommon people in somewhat unusual places. A few of the characters stand out. Parlabane, for instance, gives us an annoying villain who is both disturbing and likable. Sometimes the tidy fence between goodness and evil seems to melt away in this story, leaving the reader a bit unsettled by the dark shadows within him or herself. This is, however, merely a minor - not too jarring - revelation of what we attempt to hide from ourselves. Robertson Davies gives us, in The Rebel Angels, an uncommon window upon the common human experience. If you are like me, you will find that you remember less of the details of this book than you feel that you have been reminded of the characters and experiences of your own life that sometimes too easily pass from notice.

I highly recommend this book; but only for those who are willing to commit to reading the whole of the trilogy. Without the other volumes, you will feel cheated. But with them, you will find yourself greatly enriched by having read The Rebel Angels.

5 out of 5 stars Deep erudition and fun: a rare cocktail for the mind.......2003-06-30

In a tranquil Canadian University a voice spreads: Parlabane is back! Cave!Cave!, Molesworth would say. Cerebral and celebrate scholars, fascinating student girls, modern-style mecenates and unconventional researchers will soon find their lives upset by the most Rebel of the Rebel Angels. A disgraced teacher,Parlabane is philosophically contradictory, insolent, taking everyone for a ride in his absolutely anarchic world, and is the pivotal personnage of this wonderful novel. His ex-colleagues are also involved in the inventory of an inherited literary and artistic treasure, from which an important Rabelais' manuscript is missing.A literary puzzle that will be solved in a very bizarre manner.
All is wonderful in this novel: the irony, the depiction of the
academic world, the charachters beautifully detailed like Beerbohm caricatures, the great arcane erudition of Robertson Davies, and a marvelous story whose unpredictable end is absolutely unique. A gem of a book, whit an exquisitely arcane flavor

4 out of 5 stars much-needed rebuke to complacent orthodoxy.......2006-03-04

This is a fine riposte against the free verse orthodoxy that has dominated the thinking of lazy academicians and hipsters for decades. How many ignorant sneers from these "fundamentalists" have I heard over the years? Hey, if you can't write a good sonnet or villanelle yourself, don't knock those who can. And if metrical poetry ain't your thing, great--it's a big world--plenty of free verse for those who want free verse. The idea that formal verse ever disappeared, however, is something of a myth (perhaps self-serving in the case of the so-called "New Formalists"). Strong metrical poets have appeared in every generation of American poets, from Robinson and Frost to Ransom, Francis, Winters, and Cunningham to Nemerov, Wilbur, and Hecht. Also, many acclaimed contemporary free verse poets started off writing formal verse (e.g., W.S. Merwin, James Wright, and Adrienne Rich). It's out there, and it always will be, because the challenge of it will always engage some writers--although few will ever be up to it. Of those poets born in the 40s and 50s collected in this volume, the most outstanding seem to me to be Timothy Steele, R. S. Gwynn, and Dana Gioia. The anthology is uneven but it provides an excellent introduction to contemporary verse that should send the reader off in search of collections by the best individual poets. (If you want a really scathing attack on academic orthodoxy, check out Gwynn's _Narcissiad_.)

5 out of 5 stars great collection.......2000-01-09

I am both a fan of formal poetry and free verse, but it always seemed like contemporary poets only wrote in free verse. i couldn't find any modern formal poetry. that's why this collection was such a wonderful little gem to find. some of the better poets born after 1950 are included here.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-04-11

New Formalism was long overdue, and this volume surveys it admirably. Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars New Formalism still has some ground to cover.......1997-12-16

"Rebel Angels" showcases many contemporary poets who may be praised for working in traditional forms in an up-to-date idiom, but who may also be chided for inefficient workmanship. Meter and rhyme, as Dana Gioia has pointed out, have been in decline for decades. The New Formalist poets have made a valiant effort at reestablishing meter and rhyme, but unfortunately their own competence in traditional forms is in some question. There are exceptions: Timothy Steele, while he sounds too much like Richard Wilbur on occasion, is the best of the lot, with Bruce Bauer, Charles Martin, and Brad Leithauser runners-up. The rest suffer deficiencies in craftsmanship, sometimes serious ones. The revival of formalism has much ground to cover. However, despite these reservations, the book provides a good starting point for those interested in contemporary, formal poetry. (The committed reader would do well to check out the original volumes by the poets mentioned above, particularly Steele.)

Book Description

Life. Love. Friendship. Death. In James Michael Rice's new book, Rebel Angels, six teenagers are forever changed after crossing paths with a serial killer, thus unraveling the grim truth behind a town legend.

For more than a decade, "The Hacker" murders have haunted the residents of the small New England town called Hevven. Many residents quietly believe that the police apprehended the wrong man. But the suspect, a drifter who maintained his innocence until the bitter end, took his own life before the truth could be told. Some believe the real killer is still out there, preying on young women, though not so much as a shred of evidence has ever been found—until now.

Mike Swart, 18, is a natural born leader: strong, handsome, charismatic and the former star quarterback for his high school football team. One night, Mike is out joyriding with his friends when a chance encounter with a local cop causes the boys to seek refuge in an abandoned house. Inside they discover the mutilated body of The Hacker's latest victim, and suddenly Mike Swart and his friends are thrust into a world they never knew existed - one of darkness, corruption, and deceit.

Now, wanted by the police for a murder they did not commit and stalked by a madman they cannot escape, Mike Swart and his friends make a desperate decision that will alter their lives forever.

They decide to flee.

At a remote cabin in the mountains of New Hampshire, six teenagers make a stand against an evil from which they cannot escape. But, can they survive long enough to prove their innocence?

A novel that offers suspenseful action and intense drama, Rice's Rebel Angels is an exciting thriller that keeps the reader glued to its pages well into the wee hours of the morning.

Wow! I just finished this book, and I can't stop thinking about it! Rice has a way of sucking the reader in from page one and never letting go. And the characters were so believable and realistic I felt like they were my own friends, and I was right there with them.

This was a fun read, already one of my faves. It had the perfect combination of horror, suspense, and drama. Readers will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Great Story for a first novel.......2004-02-04

This is James Michael Rice's first novel and it is a winner! The story describes the adventures of a young group of high schoolers, as they stubble onto a crime scene that has remained unsolved for a long, long time. Very refreshing style of writing. I couldn't put it down. Buy this now because once Oprah gets wind of this, everyone will want to read it.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely terrific tale of darkness and the light.......2005-09-24

I first read this in ebook form (from [...]) last year and I simply adored it. So glad to see her stuff coming to Amazon. This is the first book in the Rebel Angels Series (2nd is ECHOES AND EMBERS and the third just came out in ebook form titled SPLENDOR AND DARKNESS).

Gideon is an almost-fallen angel who was good friends with Lucifer before The Fall. He and several other angels have "issues" with God and his right-hand man Michael (as in the archangel). Gideon feels that God has shown preferential treatment to his new "pets" the humans. For his bloodlust he has been "punished" by God and is cursed to walk the earth in the darkness as a vampire. Gideon has decided to pay a visit to his estranged brother Gabriel in a monastery in (12th century) Palestine. There he meets the lovely Naomi who was orphaned as a child and raised by Gabriel in the monastery. Oh, won't she make a nice tool of revenge against Gabriel . . .

Naomi adores Brother Gabriel as he is the only family she has ever known. She secretly illuminates manuscripts and is hard at work on one when a very handsome man appears. She feels immediately attracted and drawn to him, yet she is also a little afraid of him. She also sees the tension between Gabriel and Gideon and suspects that Gideon has come with a dark purpose. She is very afraid that this dark purpose may just include her . . .

Of course it does! Though Gideon still retains some measure of his goodness, he also carries a heavy dose of darkness. He begins with the intention of playing with and seducing Naomi knowing how it will affect Gabriel. But as he gets to know her Naomi touches the goodness and light in him and it brings him up short. Suddenly he finds himself wanting, needing to protect her from, not only himself, but forces far darker than he. For the time has come for Gideon to choose between the darkness and the light; between good and evil. Will he be redeemed or will he Fall?

Oh, this is a really great book and I've read it about three times since I bought it last year. Gideon is a deeply compelling character struggling with his own inner demons (not to mention real ones!). Naomi is naive yet spirited and independent. She's the perfect balm for what ails Gideon. With it's lush, dark atmosphere and biblical references it's an original and unusual read. It's also very steamy, sensual and ultimately romantic. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Wow! What a pleasant surprise.......2005-09-21

A friend recommended this book to me because I'm a vampire buff, but this story is so much more. The quest for truth, the battle for redemption, not to mention a sizzling love story. This book truly has it all.

Naomi is likable, without being wimpy. And Gideon -- OMG what can I say about Gideon except Hot, Hot, Hot!!

Great read. I'm off to check out the other Rebel Angel stories...

5 out of 5 stars I didn't think it could be done!!.......2005-09-21

If you are looking for a fresh new take on vampire romance, look no farther. I was blown away by this book!! (I read it as an ebook and I'm thrilled to see it in paperback.)

The characters are wonderful and Gideon just might be the sexiest hero ever written. I am SO in love with him. This book made me smile, made me bite my nails, and made me cry. The sex scenes will make you squirm and the ending will leave you breathless.

Do yourself a favor and buy this book!!

This book was really great. It was kind of emotional and Peter and Fina learn more about themselves and bestest best friends. In this book Fina gets a letter from her best friend, Phoebe. She decides to go back to earth to help her and Peter goes with her to help his alchoholic mother. Together they help Pheobe learn to love life a little more and get Peter's mum off alchohol. It was really hard for them, but as always, they will pull off the mission. I hope the next book is just as great.

      Book Description

Like guardian angels, there are creatures that appear almost magically at the very moment their compassionate guidance and support is most needed. In times of change, loss, pain, or renewal, these animals, like signs on a long, dark road, guide humans through difficult choices.

The authors reveal the spiritual link that connects man to animal through true stories of people whose lives have been changed forever by relationships or encounters with animals. In co-author Charlene Johnson's inspirational personal story, a Labrador retriever she has never seen before saves her from a charging pit bull, then vanishes as quickly and mysteriously as it appeared. The wondrous stories continue, from the man whose dangerous encounter with an owl leads to a stunning breakthrough in his life to the heartwarming tale of the gentle dog that brought an elderly woman out of her apartment and helped her reconnect with people for the first time in years.

Animal Angels is a testament to the hope, love, and happiness that all people can find if they open their hearts and minds to the wonder of the special bond we share with animals and the life lessons they can provide.
