Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-09-10

I'm in an MBA program and have had numerous undergraduate accounting classes. This book is fantastic. It is FAR superior to "How To Read A Financial Report" by John Tracy. "Financial Statements: A Step-By-Step Guide to Understanding and Creating Financial Reports" by Thomas R. Ittelson is clear and concise. It's the best book I've found on the subject. I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars A Sound Basic Review of Financials.......2007-09-07

A sound review of what I learned almost 40 years ago and have not used in about 25 years. Brought back what I learned and used years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, simple and extremly useful.......2007-07-19

For the person who buys stocks, this book is an absolute must. Ittelson's writing is clear and gets to the point. By the end, you will have a very good understanding of financial statements. I got interested in this book as an investor and I am very pleased with my time investment in reading this book.

1 out of 5 stars Worst book I have bought yet.......2007-06-11

I bought 3 books, the one I am reviewing, "Reading Financial Reports For Dummies", and "Guide to Understanding Financial Statements". This book gives no information for beginners who are trying to learn how to understand financial statements. I read all 3 books twice, and I didn't get anything...and I mean nothing from this book. The other two were very well written. Reading Financial Reports For Dummies and The Guide to Understanding Financial Statements. I suggest not wasting your money on this book. It is basically a lot of numbers with very little explanation. It is also confusing because the definitions are different and there is no explanation why they defintions change when reading a financial report.

5 out of 5 stars Good for beginners.......2007-06-07

This book would be an excellent supplement to a beginning accounting class. The author explains the material so that it is very easy to understand.

But if you've taken intermediate or advanced accounting classes, don't waste your money. There isn't anything new in this small book. It doesn't cover all areas of accounting and the areas that are covered are not in-depth. Example: There is a brief mention of straight-line deprection but nothing about salvage value and no mention about the other depreciation methods.

Book Description

Introducing the practical and inspirational guide to incorporating Kaizen and its powerful principles into one's daily life. Rooted in the two thousand-year-old wisdom of the Tao Te Ching--"The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step"--Kaizen is the art of making great and lasting change through small, steady increments. Kaizen is the tortoise versus the hare. Kaizen is the eleven Fortune 500 companies that significantly outperformed the market through moderate, step-by-step actions. Kaizen is losing weight not by a crash diet (which more often than not crashes) but by eating one bite less at each meal--then, a month later, eating two bites less. Kaizen is starting a life-changing exercise program by standing--just standing--on a treadmill for one minute a day.

Written by an expert on Kaizen--Dr. Robert Maurer, a psychologist on the staff at the UCLA medical school who speaks and consults nationally--One Small Step is the gentle but potent way to effect change. Beginning by outlining the all-important role that fear plays in all types of change--and Kaizen's ability to circumvent it--Dr. Maurer then explains the 7 Small Steps: how to Think Small Thoughts, Take Small Actions, Solve Small Problems, and more. He shows how to perform mind sculpture--visualizing virtual change so that real change comes more naturally. Why small rewards motivate better than big rewards. How great discoveries are made by paying attention to the little details most of us overlook. Hundreds of examples of Kaizen at work grace the book, as well as quotes from W. Edwards Deming (who brought Kaizen to Japanese industry), Peter Drucker, coach John Wooden, and others.

5 out of 5 stars The Kaizen Way.......2007-10-18

This book has given me permission to be successful in a whole new way! As a Business Coach, it has become my number one tool to support my clients through big challenges resulting in many accomplishments that were overwhelming previously.

5 out of 5 stars Unique approach to achieving goals.......2007-10-12

The kaizen way represents a totally different way of thinking for most westerners. Rather than setting big bold goals or overly ambitious New Years resolutions, the kaizen way would have us take small manageable steps. It is the process of continual improvement.

Robert Maurer does a very good job to explaining the underlying psychology of why kaizen works so well. Basically we all have the fight/flight mechanism that is activated when we encounter something new. We have come to express this as stress. Dr. Maurer says this is actually a form of fear, and if the fear of change is too great, change will not occur. But if we take small baby steps, we do not engage the fight or flight mechanism and eventually our brain comes to accept the gradual change.

The book is a very easy read. The concept has many applications - from reaching your goals, breaking bad habits or improving relationships.

If you have attempted to change your behavior in any way and not met with the success you wanted, I would highly recommend you read this book. It will give you a totally new approach to achieving your goals.

The concepts outlined in the book can be of significant benefits to those who may not even be aware of the need. Stress is the at the root cause of the majority of all health problems. By apply the kaizen way to your daily life, you can reduce the stress level in your life.

It should be read and the concepts implemented. It will change your life.

5 out of 5 stars Quick read!.......2007-09-27

I found this book to pack a lot of bang for the buck, a very quick read that has packs quite a few great ideas in how to start whatever journey you might be on by taking that first step. I would heartily recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars At last The Answer to why most personal development books fail.......2007-09-23

I have red several books In trying to search for the best answers on how to succeed and accomplish goals... However All those books gave me some inspiration although it was so short-term that all the time I attmempted to even try to do something that will make me successful I will always panic and suffer through a great degree of procrastination that It came to the point where I will never even START to give it a go...Why? Because Most personal development books mention that you got to want to succeed so bad and make a really big goal...that created a mental bloackages that has never been able to surpass the obstacles that got in my way..The bigger the goal the more i thought about it there more the Fear grew within me that it has left me with a feeling of helpessness and often paralized my thinking, .. It has taught me so much into.. tip-toing my way through fear to achieve a goal...the book has provided me a powerhouse of great loving information..and has transmutted all my big scary, frustrating, negative questions.. too tiny, small, fragmental questions that has really changed my life! And I've only red the first chapter! I have had several panic attacks for as long as 7 years... I am now 19 yrs old and at such a young age it has greatly contributed to all areas of my life.. I now do not hesitate ever as the questions I ask myself are the smallest and most efficient than ever ! Highly recommend this book For those that have cant achieve Brand new big goals.

5 out of 5 stars Large lifestyle change, Small book.......2007-09-09

Dr Maurer's book explains how you can motivate yourself and get your life into gear, simply by making tiny or almost insignifcant changes to the way you organise yourself. No change or effort is too small. The results are always cumulative and thus worthwhile.
Certainly incredibly helpful.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST book about Guineas.......2007-08-23

At first I was reluctent to purchase a "how to" book on raising anything. But after purchasing and reading Gardening with Guineas, I was very pleased with my puchase! Ms. Ferguson writes very practical and easy to read advice on how to raise Guinea Fowl step by step as well as other helpful advice for first time guinea owners. I loved the book and recomend it to anyone who has or wants to own guineas.

I;ve looked all over for a book like this, it answers so many questions that even the loco growers can't answer, if i would have read it before starting to raise guineas i wouldn't have lost so many
thanks to the authur she is very informative

5 out of 5 stars All you ever need to know about raising Guineas.......2007-07-13

This book is very informative, and a pleasure to read. We just bought a farm, and there are a lot of woods - and tons of ticks - I did a google search and found that Guinea Fowl are good for getting rid of ticks - then I came to Amazon and found this book. There are great stories, great info, and I am now incubating a couple of dozen guinea eggs and looking forward to fewer bugs in my garden because I'll be gardening with Guineas!

4 out of 5 stars my handbook.......2007-06-08

When my husband told me he had ordered 20 guinea chicks, I had a moment of panic. After reading this book, which gives detailed instructions for different stages of raising guinea fowl, I feel securely armed with many chapters of the author's experience. Our keets are a week old now, and doing fine!

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-06-06

I purchased this book with great expectations based upon the glowing reviews of others. Though a decent source of information about raising guineas, the book often left me frustrated and confused. For example, contrary to Ms. Ferguson's experience, neither I nor anyone I've talked to has had any success moving guinea nests. Also, when discussing raising young keets, the author states, "it would be a good idea to provide an optional heat source for the keets in the henhouse on really cold days or nights until they are older." What is "really cold" and what is "older"? On numerous occasions I've searched this book for help with specific problems and gotten only vague information that left the question unanswered.

My experience has taught me, 1. Guineas can be raised exactly like chickens and 2. Don't try to move a guinea nest. Just invert a cage on top of the setting hen, give her food and water, and let her hatch and raise her brood right there.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very Good........2007-01-29

Excellent guide for those who want to gain more knowledge about business valuation. All formulas and concepts are clearly explained. This guide is indeed an excellent tool.

2 out of 5 stars Not good for tech companies.......2007-01-09

This is a good book but if you are a tech company do not buy it as it is designed for small traditional business's.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-11-01

This book is very good and to the point. I knew quite a bit about valuing commercial real estate and publicly traded stocks but not much about valuing closely held companies or small businesses. This book really filled in those gaps. The book is neither too technical nor too non-technical, it explains both math from the ground up and rules of thumb. I also bought a much larger book on the same subject at the same time and have not read it yet because this book was so good. Really well laid out and easy to use. This is definitely the first book to read if you are either buying or selling a business.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for non-specialists!!!.......2006-06-26

I think this book is very effective! Once you by pass all the gramatical errors, then you will be in driver's seat on this subject. A good book worth reading by anyone who is or plans to be a small business owner. I take my hat off to the author for making such a complicated subject easy to follow within the covers of such a small book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellet Resource.......2005-07-31

Although the price is steep for such a small book, and the book is full of grammatical errors, the information is invaluable. The book seems to have not been proof read prior to publishing. However, the author knows his subject and I have already used some of the information in the book on two business deals. One passage especially, on valuing (discounting) a minority partnership interest saved my organization several million dollars. They had planned to pay "pro rata" to buy a minority stake in a company. I was able to demonstrate why that was not a good idea because of the way the partnership was structured. They are now successfully negotiating at a discounted price. I highly recommend this book and agree with another review which states that you can find lengthier books on business valuation, but this one cuts right to the main points. In fact I bought three other books on valuation, one is over 1,000 pages but "Unlocking the Value of Your Business" is the book I find myself referencing everyday. Maybe that is why I could not find a used copy at a cheaper price, everyone holds on to their book!

Book Description

Two years after being released from Camp Green Lake, Armpit is home in Austin, Texas, trying to turn his life around. But it’s hard when you have a record, and everyone expects the worst from you. The only person who believes in him is Ginny, his 10-year old disabled neighbor. Together, they are learning to take small steps. And he seems to be on the right path, until X-Ray, a buddy from Camp Green Lake, comes up with a get-rich-quick scheme. This leads to a chance encounter with teen pop sensation, Kaira DeLeon, and suddenly his life spins out of control, with only one thing for certain. He’ll never be the same again.

In his first major novel since Holes, critically acclaimed novelist Louis Sachar uses his signature wit combined with a unique blend of adventure and deeply felt characters to explore issues of race, the nature of celebrity, the invisible connections that determine a person’s life, and what it takes to stay on course. Doing the right thing is never a wrong choice–but a small step in the right direction.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars A true dissapointment........2007-10-10

Although Holes was an EXCELLENT book, this book sucked worse than any I have read. It took me about 2 weeks to finish this that's how much I hated it. It made no since and it jumped around WAY TO MUCH! I guess that's all I can say. A certain change from Holes.

2 out of 5 stars Small Step in the wrong direction.......2007-10-09

I was disappointed in Louis Sachar's sequel to Holes. I was expecting his layered writing to hit a new level with this one, but he just took a step back, probably trying to make a beeline for another film adaptation, but this one would fail on the big screen. It barely held my attention in print. I prefer the lunacy of his Wayside books to this mediocre title.

5 out of 5 stars "Holes" Fans Need Dig No Longer for Another Great Book.......2007-06-24

Who knew that Louis Sachar could actually improve on the suspenseful, charming surprise hit of several years back--"Holes"? While Stanley Yelnats is nowhere to be seen (or even mentioned), "Small Steps" focuses instead on two other inmates from Camp Green Lake--Armpit and X-Ray, mostly the former.

It has been three years since his time served at Camp Green Lake and Armpit is trying to take baby steps towards improving his life, and shedding his rather embarrassing nickname. Armpit spends his days working hard with a landscaping company, trying to get noticed by a girl in his economics class, and just getting through his last year in high school. While minding his own business and trying to stay out of trouble, he gets a call from his old pal X-Ray, who coaxes Armpit into joining him in a ticket-scalping get-rich-quick scheme. Meanwhile, Sachar narrates the story of Kyra DeLeone, a Spears/Aguilera/Simpson-ish pop diva who, like armpit, yearns for independence and an identity separate from her parents. The two stories obviously come together, about halfway through the book, and the result is pure storytelling magic.

Sachar brings back his ability to create endearing, sympathetic characters, but also a knock-out plot with fantastic pacing that will have readers young and old alike turning the pages. While the main focus of the story is on Armpit and will appeal to boys especially, the inclusion of Kyra into the tale will please many female readers, especially given the romantic twist of the story. Parents and teachers will also appreciate the unlikely friendship between Armpit and his young, female, white neighbor, Jenny, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy.

No matter what one's tastes, this book is sure to please all the way up to its climactic ending.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME BOOK!.......2007-06-19

An awesome sequel to HOLES. Its a touching, realistic novel, with some romantic parts in it.

4 out of 5 stars baby steps.......2007-05-29

I thought it was a page turner because you just want to keep on reading so you can know what happens next. I learned that you should never try to get money quick and that you should always work hard. I do recommend this book because I think it is a book that people will enjoy. I would like to read another book by this author because I liked this one and I might like another book by this author. People who like money, tickets and singers will like this book.

Book Description

“Ann Holmes has created the perfect guide to help women turn their dreams into a reality.”
–Donna Mullen Good, CEO of the Center for Women & Enterprise

If you’ve ever dreamed of starting your own business, or if you’ve ever wondered about how to build up the business you already run, but worry because you don’t have an MBA or a couple of years of college business courses, this book is for you. Based on extensive interviews with more than eighty women entrepreneurs from around the country, There’s a Business in Every Woman offers inspiring success stories (and instructive missteps) in a wide range of businesses–from catering, landscaping, personal training, and wedding and events planning to interior and clothing design, staffing, manufacturing, and product design.

What the trailblazing women in this book have in common is a good idea and the courage to turn a dream into a money-making reality through hard work, passion, and drive. Take, for instance, the woman who started an IT consulting company in her basement and now has more than a thousand employees in three states; two jogging buddies who commiserated about their uncomfortable bras and went on to design and produce a jog bra, creating a company that Playtex ultimately bought for millions; the mom whose hand-made birthday-party invitations made such a splash that she launched her own custom party invitation company, which she expanded to include holiday cards, gift tags, bags, and more; the sixty-five-year-old corporate wife and mother who applied her domestic talents to opening a profitable B&B; the twenty-three-year-old who bought a fledging real estate franchise and now earns a healthy six figures annually.

These success stories highlight the practical: focusing on what you’re good at; setting up your business properly–even if you are starting out from your basement or garage; getting financial backing when you need it; marketing your products with sizzle; networking like the “good old boys”; understanding how and when to diversify your products or services; managing your growth; and, most important, knowing what your company is worth and when it might be lucrative to cash out.

An accessible crash course in starting and running your own business, There’s a Business in Every Woman will teach you everything you need to know to turn your pipedream into serious profits.

4 out of 5 stars If you want to start your own business, read this book.......2007-05-04

This book is great for anyone who is in business or wants to start a business. Ann Holmes knows her subject. She has successfully started, run and sold multiple businesses. Although directed toward women, anyone going into business can benefit.

Ann writes with the wisdom of a mother who knows how to coach her children from birth to graduation, one step at a time. She assumes the reader is starting at the beginning and must acquire the business language, know-how, and understanding needed to operate a successful company.

True to her subtitle, the book provides a concise 7-step guide to discovering, starting and building the business of your dreams. It comes complete with a checklist for each step, real life examples, and plenty of resources. Ann openly shares her own experiences of having to make tough decisions to get her business through difficult times. Beside the checklists there are "Success" stories and "Regrets" stories to help you recognize the value of each step and what the consequences could be if you do not organize a business in a systematic way.

In the second part of her book, putting the seven steps into practice, Ann continues to provide real-life examples so the reader will comes away with a total concept that the business owner's role is to be the captain who charts the course for the business and uses the wisdom of the 7-step guide to navigate the business to a successful outcome including selling the business if that is your goal.

The only thing left for the reader is to have the brilliant business idea, follow the 7-step guide, and make the decisions that let your business flourish.

Armchair Interviews says: With so many women starting businesses, anything that helps them be successful is important to read.

4 out of 5 stars A ra-ra book for women who want to think about starting their own small business........2007-04-12

I enjoyed this book. I think any woman who collects a W-2 and wants to become self-employed would do themselves a favor to read this book as they plan to make the transition. As I turned the pages to this book I felt as though I was reading a re-write of Ginny Wilmerding's book that came out last year entitled Smart Women and Small Business (ISBN: 0471778680). See my review for that book.

This book is broken into 10 chapters as follows:

1. How Do You Know if There's a Business in You?
2. Choose and Focus on Your Core Competencies
3. Build Your Company's Infrastructure
4. Keep Good Financials
5. Market Your Products
6. Diversify
7. Plan and Manage Growth
8. Understand Valuation and Organize an Exit Plan
9. Put Your Company into Play
10. Done Deals: Sold Companies and IPOs

It claims to include a 7-step guide to discovering, starting, and building the business of your dreams. I found the "guide" to include some wonderful information, but I did not find it to flow logically from one step to the next. At page 30 of the book in Figure 2 the 7-steps are diagrammed. I'm not going to point out all the diagram's flaws, but I will say I think it would have been much better if it had been written as the following "7 steps." See

1. Learn the ropes of your business BEFORE you start it (have a skill set)
2. Prepare a business plan
3. Start the business
4. Market the business & keep good financial records
5. Grow & Diversify
6. Systematize the business
7. Sell the business (exit & move on)

The author says at page 5 of the book that she wrote it for women entrepreneurs to help them navigate the steps to business success. As long as you keep in mind the above 7 steps I have written here you can read the book and the author will accomplish what she set out to do by writing the book. There is lots of great content in this book. My favorite part was Chapters 9 & 10 that describes the process of preparing to sell your company and cash out. I would have liked the book better if the topic of venture capital had been left out. It did not seem appropriate for the target audience of this book.

I particularly liked the reference made to SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) at page 35. I'm a SCORE volunteer, and the fact that I am is probably why I am reviewing this book. It's worth a read. 4 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to start your own business.......2007-01-11

It is a complete guide to start your own business, specially when you are first time. It covers all the steps in the process from finding out what kind of business to complete a real business plan. It also analyse buying an existing business or a franchise. Excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for the New Entrepreneur.......2006-11-20

This book is a great starting point for the first-time entrepreneur; it is informative and motivating for one who has toyed with the idea of starting a business, but lacks the experience to know where to begin in his journey. Dr. Harper helps the reader to re-evaluate his or her plans to avoid failure in the future.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good intro to starting a business.......2005-12-27

This book is a good summary of the more technical aspects of starting a business. It doesn't dig into economics or financial issues too deeply so just reading this book isn't going to make you an expert. But, I think the general steps to starting a business are laid-out pretty well and that this book has a lot of value for someone looking for direction. One thing I would have liked to see in this book was a concise summary of all the steps involved so that when it is time to refer back to this book after reading it, you're not digging through the details and examples.

3 out of 5 stars So far it has been very informational........2005-09-11

I have not read the whole book yet but from what I have read it has been very informational. There are a lot of good tips and things that I had not even thought about. I think I got what I paid for.

5 out of 5 stars Eye Opening!.......2002-11-21

I would highly recommend picking up this book to anyone contemplating opening a small business or maybe struggling with an existing one. It is an easy read and reminds you of the common pitfalls, at the same time motivating for success...

Book Description

Do you want more? More hope, more joy, more fun and more fulfillment? Change is the essence of life; the biggest, most meaningful, and dramatic differences in our lives—and in our world—are really just the result of a series of small, seemingly insignificant changes. ""Amazing changes can occur in the most surprisingly small amounts of time,"" says Allyson Lewis, author and senior executive at a major financial services firm. ""In just seven minutes my life changed forever, in this book I will share exactly what happened to me and how it can happen to you.""

In The Seven Minute Difference, Lewis motivates business professionals to grow through micro-actions that can be completed in as little as seven minutes. According to Lewis, small efforts such as two extra sales calls, a daily action plan, a review of a competitor’s product, or a change of schedule can make the difference between mediocrity and excellence.

This book coaches readers to realize their full potential by focusing on four fundamental truths: Change begins to happen the moment you decide to change ; you must want to change; you must expect change; you should enjoy the process of change. Drawing upon years of experience as a motivational speaker and financial advisor, Lewis shows how she has successfully used these principles to help thousands of corporate executives, financial advisors, insurance executives, entrepreneurs, accountants, and attorneys change their lives. Chapters are filled with concrete examples, anecdotes, and sage advice, such as ""Life is like luggage, there are limits to what you can take on the journey"" and ""If you want your life to be different, you must be different.""

With humor and flair, The Seven Minute Difference spurs people to unlock their purpose, knowledge, and passion, and as a result, transform their lives at work and at home.

5 out of 5 stars Great book to ignite your success!.......2007-05-25

Allyson Lewis's new book is invaluable for busy people who want to keep growing their success. Packed with hundreds of tips, ideas, and insights, it is fun and easy to read. The format of micro-actions is especially effective and makes it easy for the reader to immediately implement new ideas. Another great contribution by Allyson Lewis.

4 out of 5 stars A Homage to Incremental Improvement.......2006-09-11

Allyson Lewis offers an effective and non-threatening template for improving your life. Let's hear it for baby steps! We have all heard that, "A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step." Lewis exhorts us to take single, small - 7-minute - steps to transform our lives. In this way, you break down resistance to procrastination and barriers that keep you from attaining your goals and stall your progress. Good stuff, motivational and practical!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2006-08-09

In just seven minutes, the course of Allyson Lewis' life changed. In just the few hours it took me to read Allyson's book, The Seven Minute Difference, my life changed. Allyson's book does not just provide advice, but actionable steps that can be taken to take charge of your life -- professionally and personally -- to achieve the goals you want to achieve. She is a hands-on writer and the book is chock full of tangible ideas for ways you can implement the Seven Minute Difference in your life. It is an easy-to-read book and one that you will want to own, not borrow, so you can underline and highlight the points you want to remember and come back to again and again. Allyson makes her points with both enthusiasm and poignancy and I personally have purchased 6 additional copies to give to friends. As Allyson says, "change happens in an instant," and the changes you want to make in your professional and/or personal life will happen when you read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-08-06

I really liked this book. It was like getting a library of great success literature and life lessons summarized into one book. The author did a great job of organizing the material into an easily accessible format. I will definitely apply the lessons learned in the book to my personal and professional life.

5 out of 5 stars Really works!.......2006-06-10

I have never met Allyson Lewis, a financial advisor for a major New York brokerage firm, but I feel as though I have. Not only do I feel as though we have met, but after reading her two books, I feel as though she is watching me and taking note of my progress toward the goals she has helped me set.
Her new book, The Seven Minute Difference: Small Steps to Big Changes (Kaplan Publishing, $20), started out, she writes, to be a business book about making small choices (and making them over and over) that will lead to big changes in your work. It was a good idea. But the book evolved into something more: Using the same tools to make changes in your entire life, most specifically to bring your beliefs, goals and actions into alignment so that the whole well-oiled machine works better. This was an even better idea. Too many of us, I have noticed, spend time dreaming of how we would like things to be different in the future without doing anything different today.
Lewis offers a whole book full of tips to make these changes seem manageable, almost painless - baby steps, if you will. The seven-minute concept comes from an epiphany she had during a seminar that changed her thinking about her goals, and her life, as well as from studies showing that people have about seven minutes to concentrate on something before their attention wanders.
But what makes the book so strong is that Lewis herself is there on every page, sharing her journey and her tips with humor and humanity. It is nice to know, for example, that she considers herself disorganized and easily distracted (even though I don't believe it.) She comes alive on the page as a terrific coach, which she apparently is, one who would push you to the limit but almost always be nice about it. At first I found her accomplishments a little intimidating, but as I got to know her I decided that her significant achievement - a full, well-ordered, well-balanced life, still in progress - was the result of a strong will; that, in other words, she had started out with the same imperfections as the rest of us and simply decided not to let them carry the day. After that realization, I decided to try to become more like her instead of admiring her from a distance, which I suspect was what she intended all along.
The book came at the perfect time for me. Last month I left my job after 20 years and have been working to get my house in order - in every sense. I keep Allyson's book on my nightstand, so that on my lazy days, and I have my share, I see her picture, imagine that she is looking back, and get busy.

5 out of 5 stars Tiny Book, Huge Value.......2007-10-18

This book is incredibly informitve, yet conscise enough to read in an afternoon. It has targeted, well documented information and succeedes in giving you a good overview of the industry and the steps you need to take to break into it. There are a few editing errors, as mentioned by another reviewer, but the strength of the content overshadows this minor inconvenience. I reference my copy constantly.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better. . ........2007-07-02

This book does have a lot of general information about the event planning industry. It also give the reader a lot of information from industry heavy hitters. This book is unfornately not for a person who is familiar with or has worked in the industry and are looking to branch out on their own. It is also not a strong suit for those interested in staying more on the social side of event planning. Most of the resources and examples (contracts etc.) are geared to those who are planning large scale events where the customer will be giving you all the money to spend as needed. Overall the authors did their best to tackle such a lofty subject in so few pages. I just don't think they were as sucessful as they could have been.

3 out of 5 stars Informative.......2007-04-10

Informative simply written and easy to understand for the beginner. Has tips, forms and checklists.

1 out of 5 stars Editing Problems.......2007-04-07

This book is very informative, but some of the information boxes are missing the wording. It cuts off some of the words, so the information is incomplete and makes it hard to follow what is going on.

I want to know who to contact in order to get a better edited copy of this book. I have almost completed reading it, but I would have liked to have received a correctly edited copy of the book that I paid for.

Thank you for listening.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2006-03-25

This book was very helpful to me as someone who really doesn't have any event planning training, but is looking to start. It had light humorous moments which made it more enjoyable to read. I also loved the side comments. All in all, I would say anyone looking to work in this field should read this book. It will come in very handy and you can read it over and over again.

Book Description

A perfect blend of humor and drama, Y: THE LAST MAN - ONE SMALL STEP is a fascinating tale of catastrophe and consequences. After a mysterious occurrence instantaneously killed every male human on Earth, twenty-something escape artist Yorick Brown suddenly found himself as the last man alive on a planet inhabited solely by females. But when Yorick and his secret service bodyguard learn of a Russian spaceship with two healthy males on board, they quickly journey to its projected landing site in Kansas to see if the rumor is true. Now as Yorick and Agent 355 wait to see if the cosmonauts will survive their return to Earth's atmosphere, a zealous faction of the Israeli military attempt to kidnap the last man for their own nefarious purposes.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

A few people have realised that Yorick is not the only man left alive, even if he is the only man on Earth, as there are still people in space.

Yorick's sister has gone completely nuts, and her and her band of fellow mammary removing armed maniacs are still after Yorick. So is a hardcase Israeli military officer and her team.

3 out of 5 stars Astronauts and Thespians.......2006-10-21

This is really two separate stories. In the first story we have the conclusion of the quest for the Russian space capsule. In the second story, and injured Ampersand is taken in by a group of traveling actors. There is no real transition between the two tales. Ampersand is healthy at the end of the astronaut arc. In a later tale we learn a little about the transition in a short comment from Yorrick.

The Russian space capsule is going to land in the American heartland. It happens to be near a research facility that should be able to keep the male astronauts isolated from whatever killed all of the males actually on the planet (Yorrick and Ampersand excepted). But of course nothing is simple in this new world and the Israeli army unit makes their play as they learn the truth about the space capsule.

Suddenly we meet a troupe of actors who find the injured Ampersand. They quickly discover he is male and decide to do a play about the last man on Earth. A mysterious sword-wielding figure keeps an eye on the action from the shadows. When the big performance finally arrives there is some chaos and Yorrick arrives to reclaim Ampersand. The story ends with a quick joke after we learn what some feel is necessary to save the world.

Two very different stories. The first is full of action and brings together a number of continuing characters and advances the plot significantly. The second story is more of a pause with almost no action and none of the continuing characters. It is hard to rate a book made up of two such different parts but I felt each story had something to offer even if the second story seems very unlike the rest of the series. Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars Longer Book For The Same Price, But Series Slows.......2006-06-13

This book collects issues 11 to 17 of the series, offering seven issues for the same price as the first two five-issue volumes. Unfortunately, the plot moves slower than before, including a guest-penciled two-issue 'Comedy and Tragedy' sidebar about a traveling theater troupe in a small Nebraska town. I'll hope for an improvement in the simulaneously purchased Book 4 before continuing with Book 5.
