[A review of the 2nd edition.]

The 2nd edition includes descriptions of Matlab 7. But in fact, much of the text seems unchanged from the 1st edition. Because while Matlab continues to add refinements, it is by now very stable in its core functionality. Thus, at least for beginners, the book is useful, regardless of which precise version of Matlab is on your machine.

Many of the examples are indeed quite easy. The underlying maths knowledge is at the undergraduate level. Say for 1st or 2nd year undergrad maths courses. One example uses Lagrange's equation in classical mechanics. That seems to be about as advanced as matters get.

The graphical capability of Matlab given by the book is equivalent to what Mathematica provides. Though perhaps the latter has somewhat spiffier graphics, the graphical functionality is about the same.

3 out of 5 stars A no nonsense introduction to Matlab 5/6.......2003-05-20

This book is more of an introduction to Matlab 6 than 5.It claims to cater both beginners and advanced users.I use Matlab 6 for my research in Communication and Signal processing.Having worked on Matlab 4 , I doubt whether it can be a serious introduction to advanced users. The material is fairly concise and easy to read. All examples are simple and easy to implement straight away after a first reading. It covers almost all important sections to prepare you for any field you would like to work on with Matlab 6.

It has a full chapter on "Simulink" which is really nice having. The are bountiful examples and three practice sets.I would have loved to see a full section on " Files ".This is a drawback.Apart from some minor shortcomings this is a fairly good introductory book.

The multitudes of Gary Paulsen fans (or more accurately, Brian fans) will be thrilled to find that the author has penned yet another story about Brian Robeson. Although Paulsen once claimed that he would "write no more about Brian," he seems to have been softened by the "staggering amounts of mail from readers" begging for more about the teen who is more at home alone in the wilderness than in the hustle and bustle of city life. In Brian's Hunt, the 16-year-old returns to the remote woods and lakes of Canada, where he encounters a mysteriously injured dog. His experiences two years earlier, after surviving a plane crash and months alone with only a hatchet to protect and provide for himself (Hatchet, Brian's Winter, etc.), have prepared him well to survive now. But can anything prime him for the horror that awaits him on an island campsite where he intends to meet his Cree friends?

This short episode is rife with the kind of gritty--even gruesome--details readers have come to expect from the Newbery Honor author. In an afterword, Paulsen reminds readers that he bases his stories on personal experiences and his extensive knowledge of the wild side of nature.

Confidential to avid fans: an intimation of romance amid all the rugged drama hints that this will not be the last Brian book, either. (Ages 10 to 13) --Emilie Coulter

Brian's Hunt
By
Gary Paulsen

"He was in his world again. He was back." (pg. 1) Brian was back in the wild, and that is where he felt most at home. T.V., computers, radios - Brian hated technology. Brian was different from most people, and beloved that life should be lived simply. In this fictional novel, Brian travels from his hometown to Arrowhead lake (in Seattle, Washington). School is over, and Brian quickly packs his supplies for his wilderness adventure. Everything is perfect, he's alone and staring into the beautiful night sky as he falls asleep in his canoe. Brian is awakened by the whimpering of a badly injured dog. Brian's perfect trip turns out very bad, as he follows the dog back to where he came from. He finds a campsite with two people murdered. Because Brian is a tracker he quickly realizes that one person (their child) has escaped. Who could have done this? How could the everyday violence invade his world? Brian puts his expert tracking skills to use (and with the help of his new friend - the dog) soon realizes that a bear is responsible for the murders. As Brian confronts the bear, he gets knocked unconscious. When Brian wakes up - he is saved by the very dog that he helped out. Brian understands that you can't do it all alone, sometimes you need some help.
I loved this book, and couldn't wait to begin each chapter. I enjoyed the authors style of writing, it was very descriptive and simple: "He way close in on the lily pads and something moved suddenly in the brush just up the back, rusting through the thick, green foliage, and though it sounded big and made a lot of noise he know it was probable a squirrel or eve a mouse." ( pg. 3)

5 out of 5 stars Brians Hunt- Michael Bissey.......2007-05-25

While reading Brians Hunt my favorite part was when Brian went into the house thing to look for some friends to see if they were there. All he saw was blood smeared all over the counter and bear scratches. Brian also found a friend. He was injured. The place where Brian is at is in the woods. I recommend this book to any one who likes hunting and wildlife. I also recommend this book to any one who likes survival or any other book related to Hatchet. If you want to find out any more read Brians Hunt.

5 out of 5 stars Brain's Hunt.......2007-04-12

Brain paused. Something made him reach out and take a broadhead out of the quiver and lay it acrossthe bow, even though the moment without paddling cost him his forward motion. He thought, This is silly, I'm being a worrywart, but poistioned the bow close to him just the same. Then dug with the paddle again, pulling hard for the island, the dog whimpering, and growling

5 out of 5 stars Brians Hunt.......2007-01-19

Brian is about 10 years old and because of his last incident with the plane crash he had to survive the dangerous Canadian wilderness for many months in Paulson's first book, Hatchet. Six years later in Brians Hunt, Brian can't stand living in the city anymore. He decides to moves into the wilderness alone with only a couple weapons, including a bow and arrows. Brian even has to kill for his food. Then he decides to go through a river in a canoe to find his friend Susan and her family. When he arrives at the Island, he finds something more devastating then he could imagine.
I recommend this book to people of all ages because it is a really easy book to read. Lots of kids read this book and said it was a good book so it will be a good book for you. It doesn't have a lot of pages, but it is a really great book to read and it is by Gary Paulson.

5 out of 5 stars Brian's review.......2007-01-18

This book was very good. I love the Brian's series. This book was very interesting and a little better than the other books.
In this book Brian is still trying to find his friends' camp. On the way he finds a dog that got attacked by a bear, the dog is now his pet. Brian finds the camp but notices nothing burning or anything moving. The dog started whimpering and growling as they got closer.
This book gets in better once you get into it more. Thats why I think a lot of people will like it. This was one of the best books he has ever written. I hope you will like it as much as I did.

    Book Description

Brian Skyrms' study of ideas of cooperation and collective action explores the implications of a prototypical story found in Rousseau's A Discourse on Inequality. It is therein that Rousseau contrasts the pay-off of hunting hare (where the risk of non-cooperation is small and the reward equally small) against the pay-off of hunting the stag (where maximum cooperation is required but the reward is much greater.) Thus, rational agents are pulled in one direction by considerations of risk and in another by considerations of mutual benefit. Written with Skyrms' characteristic clarity and verve, The Stage Hunt will be eagerly sought by readers who enjoyed his earlier work Evolution of the Social Contract. Brian Skyrms, distinguished Professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science and Economics at the University of California at Irvine and director of its interdisciplinary program in history and philosophy of science, has published widely in the areas of inductive logic, decision theory, rational deliberation and causality. Seminal works include Evolution of the Social Contract (Cambridge, 1996), The Dynamics of Rational Deliberation (Harvard, 1990), Pragmatics and Empiricism (Yale, 1984), and Causal Necessity (Yale, 1980).

3 out of 5 stars Informative, but rather repetitive and dry.......2007-08-19

Pulling together the vast amount of information that Levack does had to be a truly daunting task. He does it well, with easily followed organization and summaries, tables and charts, and copious references to specific witch-hunt episodes. This all makes it a good reference for people who might want to know more about the social and religious settings of the hunts. (I'm reading it for a graduate literature class on mythology and heresy.)
However, he refers to specific hunts as if expecting readers to know a good deal about their causes, effects and events. Except for the Salem, MA, hunt (which is frequently referenced, though technically not in Europe at all), none of the many hunts were at all familiar to me. What, for instance, WAS the 1610-1611 "dream epidemic" in Basque country? It sounds fascinating, but Levack never gives us any details about it. Perhaps this sort of information is beyond the scope of Levack's interest, but its omission does make for dry reading of numbers and dates, as opposed to the more human stories that lie behind them.

    5 out of 5 stars A must read .......2007-07-08

I really liked this book. Brian Levack is a top historian on the subject and therefore he has other books out there on it. However, this book is short and gives a good overview of the witch hunts in early modern Europe. He focuses on what they were and a little bit on why he thinks they occurred. It's a good overview on the subject but if you are looking for something more thorough, then this is not for you.

5 out of 5 stars The Destructiveness of Believing in Feverish and Fearful Fantasies.......2007-06-17

This is a thorough and objective examination of the witch hunts. There are no sensational distortions presented here, just the facts. It's well organized and easy to read.

People who were accused of witchcraft were mostly old women that often took care of children or were out begging for money, which annoyed others or made them feel guilty. If a child died and she had cared for it, there was always a chance that she would be accused of killing the child by witchcraft. People believed that misfortune was often caused by the devil and witchcraft in early modern Europe. So if the crops failed, if you or a loved one fell ill, or if a child died, blaming a witch was a convenient thing to do. Not only peasants but the educated believed in witchcraft. They often bolstered their fantasies with elaborate demonological theories. Amusingly, they had this idea that people would ride off into the air to some remote place to bend over backwards and kiss the devil's bum and give themselves over to Satan.

Witchcraft accusations often grow in times when people feel uneasy about radical changes in society, morality, religion, and the economy. If wages are getting lower, prices are getting higher, and there's rebellion against the old order, the devil must be on the loose. Witch hunts often happened more in societies that had provincial, local governments that had no oversight from central governments. Germany with its many small provinces was a hot spot for witch hunts and executions. Thousands of people were executed in early modern Europe, not millions, as some claim. Even white witchcraft could be prosecuted because people thought that if one had the ability to heal, you also had the ability to kill.

Although some people have always practiced black magic, almost all the people accused of witchcraft were innocent and many of the accusations expressed diabolical fantasies. Witch hunts declined when educated people started to have less spiritual, and more skeptical, materialistic worldviews which lead to the legal system refusing to prosecute witchcraft cases.

Witchcraft cases still crop up from time to time today. Most recently in America, childcare workers have been accused of doing diabolical things to children. Most cases have been dropped because they depend on accusations from children who are coaxed into giving outrageous answers or it is realized that children have difficulty distinguishing reality from fantasy. Anyone who has worked with kids knows that it is pretty easy to get accused of something that you didn't do. This is the case especially with girls. In fact, a lot of chain reaction witch hunts were started by the false accusations of children in early modern Europe. On a side note, Africa is still known to have "witch" lynchings, especially since the colonial governments have left with their modern skeptical views toward witchcraft. Black Africans often believe strongly in magic and witchcraft.

Although I still believe that nefarious witchcraft rituals are possible, such as human sacrifice, the author makes the valid point that it is impossible to prove it without hard evidence. Witch hunts were almost always based on accusations without hard proof; which is one of the reasons why judges began to reject such accusations.

    5 out of 5 stars Very scholorly.......2003-02-02

I am taking Mr. Levack's classat UT, and of course this book is required reading. Regardless I would probably have gotten the book sooner or later. It is AMAZING. Extremely detailed, delves into both the magical and legal proceedings on the Witch hunt. The focus is on WHY something like this happened, and I feel Mr. Levack is incredibly inciteful in his ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Best Summary of Modern Research.......1999-02-19

During the 70's and 80's, a flood of new information on historical witchcraft became available. Levack's book is the best survey of this new data, which has revolutionized our understanding of the Great Hunt. It's not a very "daring" book; it sticks to the facts, to the things we're sure about. There isn't a lot of speculation in it. But it's a great antidote to the badly researched books, like Anne Barstow's _Witchcraze_, which flood the popular market.

    Book Description

"Differential Equations with MATLAB" (2nd ed.) by B. Hunt, R. Lipsman, J.Osborn and J.Rosenberg is a supplemental text that can enrich and enhance any first course in ordinary differential equations. Designed to accompany Wiley's ODE texts written by Boyce/DiPrima, Borrelli/Coleman and Lomen/Lovelock, this supplement helps instructors move towards an earlier use of numerical and geometric methods, place a greater emphasis on systems (including nonlinear ones), and increase discussions of both the benefits and possible pitfalls in numerical solution of ODEs. By providing an introduction to the software that is integrated with the relevant mathematics, "Differential Equations with MATLAB" can perfectly complement and enhance these texts.
