Book Description

Both an accessible and fascinating title, this book reveals how our past experiences and psychological developments inform the choices we make today when selecting a place that we truly feel is our "home"
It considers our "environmental autobiographies" and our psychological development in respect to urban experiences, focusing on the personal stories of Charles Jencks, Michael Graves and Andres Duany, three of the most prominent figures of our time from the world of design
Both theoretical and practical exercises involve the reader in understanding and improving the quality of their own environment. An entirely new approach to architectural design which combines aesthetics and psychology

5 out of 5 stars A Solid Book-inspiring and well written.......2007-07-24

"Some Place Like Home" is a groundbreaking book for the field of Design Psychology. As an Interior Design student I realize that my study is constantly subordinate to the field of Environmental Psychology and the two are interrelated. Dr. Israel is a pioneer of this field and I would recommend her work to anyone wanting to further their understanding of this discipline. She is dead on when she states, " The idea of environmental autobiography has been around for a long time, so has environmental psychology. Unfortunately these ideas have not been effectively communicated to the public at large, or to architects. Perhaps this book will help convince people that there is a powerful connection between past, present and future sense of home and place and that this connection can be explored through...Design Psychology."

5 out of 5 stars "must read" for any interior designer and/or architect.......2007-07-19

A great book, very easy reading but also very inspirational in the sense that you are handed very usable tools for communication with (potential) clients. A logical thaught-process which needed to be put to paper: how to create a design which is not only great, but also gives te person who has to live there a sense of home!

3 out of 5 stars Questionable concept but read the book anyway........2005-12-14

I'm rarely uncertain about my reviews but I am with this one. I've gone through Toby's recommended process of discovery and I think it is partially valid but either incomplete or on the wrong track. Her questionnaires and analysis of past experiences with "home" are the basis of her theory and book.

From Martin Seligman's Authentic Happiness "It is difficult to find even small effects of childhood events on adult personality, and there is no evidence at all of large effects." (I happen to be reading this article with this quote, I haven't read the book yet: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2099-1793873_1,00.html.)

I just don't see a childhood environment influence in my design preferences. I suspect that we are influenced much more by what we are exposed to that we remember. If a child sees a dome in a house and happens to remember 30 years later that a dome can be used in a house design then that designer is more likely to use a dome. My understanding of Toby's theory is that the designer would use a dome feature if they had a happy environment with a dome in the home in their previous experience. I see this as more coincidental than part of the psychological make-up of the designer.

I grew up in an old California mining town and my parent's house had bats in the attic. The bats were amusing but I don't recall the urge to design my homes with accomodations for bats.

An Amazon review is no place to get into a full academic discussion but I believe I've seen enough decent research that works against her theory and that my personal experience combined with her approach does not work at all. It would take a book to refute her theory properly but at least don't accept it without question.

What value has this book, theory, and process to architectural and interior design? I found that the insight into the thinking and histories of the three superb architects she interviews was worth my time and money. Also, her process should work at least some of the time, and possibly more often than not. It can't hurt to know the client better and her technique is not burdensome.

I recommend reading the book if you are doing design and want another theoretical reference point.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best design tools out there........2003-12-03

This book is wonderfully written and easily understood by those directly and indirectly involved with interior design and architecture. The author, Toby Israel, leads you through her pioneering ideas behind design psychology with an interesting format that includes narration, interviews and exercises. You'll discover how your own past history of place - where you grew up, the type of home you lived in and even where you went to school - can affect choices you make regarding dwellings and workplaces now and in your future.
The exercises throughout the book help readers uncover influences from their past and can help them create successful environments for themselves or for clients. This book is a must have for anyone seeking to create satisfying designs with tools we inherently possess but too often ignore.

1 out of 5 stars A shallow and opinionated book.......2003-04-28

I am having a hard time understanding why so many people rave about this book. From the moment I started reading it I found it one of the most annoying "how-to" books I have read. Here is why:

1) There are way to many quotes in this book. The flow of Mr. GeRue's argument is constantly interrupted by quotes of varying quality and relevance. One begins to wish Mr. GeRue had more original thoughts to share himself.

2) The information provided is often shallow and obvious. The argument gets made over and over that rural areas are more quiet, more peaceful, more healthy, less violent, etc. etc. All of this we already know; that's why we bought this book to find out how to get some rural life ourselves. Mr. GeRue relies excessively on trends, mostly as anticipated by others. Even in the most recent incarnation of this book, many of these trends are already outdated and have been proven incorrect.

3) Mr. GeRue has a problem with California. He used to live in Concord, which is not the most scenic place in California, and he probably has some leftover trauma from that experience. He constantly makes negative remarks about California and Californians, which is very annoying for someone trying to use his book to find rural land in California. This bias shows up throughout the book. For example, in his discussion of bio-regions, GeRue simply lumps the entire state of California together with Nevada and Arizona, as if the climate and land in Sonoma County is at all comparable to the desert outside Phoenix.

So maybe Mr. GeRue's book is helpful if you are looking for a place in the social paradise that is Southern Appalachia (just ignore the casinos), but don't buy this book if you are interested in land in the West.

5 out of 5 stars If you buy just one "country bound" book make it this one.......2002-03-07

I think I own and have read just about every book on moving to the country and this book is tops. As the founder of the CountryBound Web site, this topic is a passion of mine and several people recommended this book to me. I really appreciated Gene's insights and logical approach to realizing one's country dreams. His style of writing is reassuring but direct. He does not candy coat the trials and tribulations of country life. When you finish this book, you will know if country life is right for you.

The other part of this book that I found extremely useful was the maps and detailed illustrations. I have found no other books that have the detailed info that this book has. And if its any further indication on just how much I liked this book, I bought several copies and gave them to friends and family.

You will not be disappointed with this book.

5 out of 5 stars This is the BEST research relocation book.......2002-01-24

Very thorough, easy to read, all the questions you want/need to know about relocating but don't think of to ask without prompting. I *highly* recommend this book as you may find you don't want a farm but a small town or vice versa. Excellent resource...highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars good for starters.......2000-11-10

This is a great how-to book for the person who has no experience with living in the country and hopes to go there soon. It covers a broad group of concerns for the would-be rural land owner, bringing to consciousness numerous important differences between living in densely-populated areas and living far from town. It cautions against living near health hazards (which crop up all too often in unpopulated regions!) or too far from employment, and strongly recommends water and soil tests before buying. These are all good ideas, and the author has many more ideas of equal merit to share.

Unfortunately, the book did not meet my needs since I have already done a fair amount of research on country living, and have some real-life experience in that area. It was too broad and general to be of much help to me. Therefore I caution the informed would-be rural landowner - seek out another source for specifics about buying and settling in your area of choice. If you have reached the level of self-education where you already know to ask about deeded easements and percolation tests, this book is not for you. Also, if you already know which region of the US you want to live in, this book will probably disappoint you. It is aimed at helping people with preliminary decisions such as, "Do you want to live somewhere hot, cold or temperate?"

If you are currently an urban/suburban dweller and you have begun to toy with the idea of getting back to nature, this book will be of immense help to you. After reading it, you will be more realistic and generally informed about country living. If you still have the itch to "get out of Dodge" at that point, you'll be needing another book - one with more specifics.

5 out of 5 stars Start building your country dream.......2000-05-02

If you're dreaming of enjoying a life in the country, plan carefully. Choose the best community for your needs, find a great property and then create the perfect homestead. Sounds hard? It's not at all. Just follow this step-by-step guide and the process will be part of the joy. Find your favorite climate and the healthiest areas of each state. Balance your need for services, education and entertainment with your desire for solitude and self-sufficiency. It's all here: easy-to-read maps, expert advice and extensive list of resources for your use. Gene GeRue's gentle guidance and common-sense ideas make this book the perfect foundation of your dream home.

I would have to agree with the other review regarding Sub-Zero. This whole book is blatant self-adverising. I wouldn't say it's horrible, but if you are looking for more than just ideas for kitchens, this book isn't for you. All of their advice is centered on using their products.

5 out of 5 stars Great Kitchens Indeed.......2005-08-02

A terrific photographic assimilation of high-end kitchens that provides a great tool for design ideas. Whether you have a design in mind and want to see it one place, or haven't a creative bone in your body and need to actually see a photo in order to envision it, this book will meet your need. The narrative accompanying each photo essay is similarly helpful. I can't say enough great things about this book.

1 out of 5 stars Don't be ripped by sub-zero! .......2005-07-27

If I wanted a subzero catalog, I would have seen a dealer- which I can conveniently find just before the index!

p. 163: "The original plan was to use a 42 inch Sub-Zero 600 series... I suggested the slimmer Sub-Zero 700" gee how's that for editorial balance! This book is copyright 2004 Sub-Zero- the other manufacturers I deal with charge Zero for their catalogs.

The "editorial" review says: "An inspirational collection that highlights the hottest innovations in appliances" I think they meant: "Read this book and have the urge to purchase Sub-Zero appliances".

Book Description

Every woodworker wants the most efficient workshop possible, whether the shop is in a closet, a basement or a garage. Maximizing floor space, power, lighting, safety and reducing noise, are all concerns covered by Bill Stankus, who interviewed hundreds of woodworkers while writing this book. Color photographs and floor plans for a wide variety of arrangements and locations are included.

This book will give even the most experienced home woodworker fresh ideas for planning a safe and efficient shop. For the novice, it should take most of the guesswork (and the mistakes, as well) out of designing the perfect workshop.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars I returned it........2006-03-01

A rehash of old info - neither interesting nor compelling. Many other books on building your woodshop are considerably better.

1 out of 5 stars Not for advanced woodworkers........2004-10-28

I can not recommend this book to any qualified woodworker. It contains little useful information. The author devotes a lot of space to safety and tools and even spends an entire chapter on workbenches, but the title promises info on designing and building a woodshop. Is this his version of bait and switch? Also, few woodworkers need to be told that a table saw needs space in front and behind for materail handling. And fewer still need to know that a good shop requires adaquate lighting and electrical. Most prospective buyers should get some other book. If you are an absolute novice, then there may be enough ideas here to justify the purchase price.

5 out of 5 stars Personal Perspective on a Workshop.......2002-07-13

I appreciate the Bill Stankus' personal narrative regarding having a workshop. The book was both informative and a pleasure to read. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful & Useful.......2002-05-01

I found this revised version an invaluable reference book while planning my workshop. Bill Stankus writes in a style that is informative and entertaining - an important characteristic of any reference book. The floorplans of various shops, illustrations and photographs of professional shops were both useful and acted as a good tool to begin planning my shop. Information on shop safety, consideration of budgets and vairous tools and skills only increased my appreciation of this book. I have read other books on this subject and found THIS book to be the best read, with valuable and TIME-SAVING (very important!) advice. I would recommend this to any woodworker interested in maximing their workshop potential!

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great.......2002-04-23

The best advice the author gives in this book is that the concept of the "ideal" workshop is the workshop that works for you. Most of us do not have unlimited space or funds to build a "dream" workshop as illustrated in many books and magazines. What you can afford and what you feel comfortable in is the ideal workshop for you. That is excellent advice.

The other topics I found interesting in this book were the floorplans of real workshops (and the owner's principal machinery listed in order of importance) and the chapter on workbenches, especially the section about holding devices.

The rest of the book is kind of thin in content. This book is priced similarly to the other 2 major books on this subject but is about half the size (in page count) which I think makes this book a little on the pricey side.

Book Description

An ingenious and foolproof guide to decorating with color by one of America’s foremost color and interior design experts.

Color is the backbone of decorating and comes into play in nearly every decorating decision. But decorating with color can be intimidating, even for professionals. There are so many decisions to be made—about wall colors and window treatments, sofas and throw pillows, floor stains and rugs, bathroom tiles and towels, even the colors of a flower bed. The result is that many of us—designers included—fall back on boring but safe shades of whites and neutrals. Joann Eckstut, one of America’s foremost experts on color, has devised a system for choosing the most harmonious color combinations in The Color Palette Primer, featuring more than 800 error-proof palettes.

Each page focuses on a single dominant color, with three distinct palettes that contain the dominant color alongside an accent color and a neutral secondary color. This system allows readers to locate the one color they know they’d like to use (or that they’re stuck with!) and see three very different uses for that color. Instead of photographs, which date quickly, there are eight iconic line drawings throughout showing vignettes of rooms (upholstery, window treatments, walls and moldings, etc.) and how the given palettes look in these contexts. All of the colors correspond to paints that are available nationally.

For everyone intrigued by the endless possibilities of color, but fearful of creating a decorating fiasco, this is the foolproof solution.

In The Color Palette Primer, you’ll find perfect color combinations for every situation—whether you’re starting from scratch or coordinating with existing colors. You’ll need this book if you are:

• Painting your house—inside or out
• Buying or reupholstering furniture
• Renovating a kitchen or bathroom
• Adding decorative accents—from lampshades to throw pillows
• Buying new bedding
• Planning a flower bed
• Choosing bath towels
• Picking out a carpet or rug
• Staining your floors
• Adding window treatments
• Deciding on a new china pattern or table linens
• And much, much more!

Every color in this book corresponds to a paint color from a national brand. At the end of each section, you will find a page identifying the paints by brand. Here is the key to the brands:

• BM-CC Benjamin Moore Color Classics
• BM-CP Benjamin Moore Color Preview
• GL Glidden
• PL Pratt & Lambert
• RLP Ralph Lauren Paint
• SWC Sherwin Williams Color
• SWCA Sherwin Williams Color Preview
• SW-MS Sherwin Williams–Martha Stewart

Color Viewer
This neutral gray viewer allows you to see a palette on its own without the influence of the other palettes on the page or the white of the page around it. Once you find a palette you like, all you need to do is to place the viewer on the chosen palette so that it blocks out the white space around it.

5 out of 5 stars The colors in my house are AMAZING because of this book........2007-05-04

I don't know very much about color. I just know what colors I like. And this book helped me work with those colors and match them with others so that my rooms look phenomenal. I painted two rooms before I had The Color Palette Primer and I paid to redo them once I bought it because I saw what a difference it made. Thank you to the author for creating such a great resource!

5 out of 5 stars A mind opening look at color.......2006-06-30

This interesting book is a highly informative and useful field guide to the world of color. Not only did I get useful theory and a handy book of palettes for decorating and fashion....but I also found it so much fun to browse through. After we bought a house, I kept this book at my bedside for several weeks and every night enjoyed looking through the pages, thinking about color combinations and possibilities. This will be a reference book I'll always keep.

1 out of 5 stars huh?.......2006-05-25

The only inspiration I got from this book was to write a review to warn others not to buy it.
Many of the color combinations seem completely off--and I'm very color oriented and progressive!
Although it offers specific manufacturer paint references, I did NOT find the colors to be true when I compared them to the actual paint chips at the paint stores. So, that was completely useless, not to mention frustrating.
This book, with its flat ideas was such a waste of my money I wouldn't even 'resell' it through Amazon because I would feel guilty.

3 out of 5 stars Falls short of its potential.......2006-05-04

While the concept for this book is great, its execution falls short of fulfilling its potential. The book is divided according to the colors of the color wheel and lists palette combinations of three colors relative to such hues. My biggest disappointment stems from the fact that each combination is illustrated in the form of a "flat" CAD-like sketch which lacks real-life depth and is limited in conveying the "feel" of the combination. The ilustrations are sterile and insipid looking. I believe that this book would have been ideal if, instead, a photograph of an interior, utilizing the color palette, would have been used.

1 out of 5 stars Colors Don't Match Actual Paint.......2006-03-15

I was very excited to get this book, but was very disappointed after reading/looking at it. I found a pallete I liked, so off to the paint store I went with book in hand. Turns out most of the colors in the book did not come close to matching the actual paint chip. I found the colors in the book to be browner than the paint chips at the store. Then the color codes for the paint did not match the codes in the store. I could not match most of the Ralph Lauren or Glidden paint color codes to what was on the paint chips. I had to ask the store to look up a color and give me the code so I could find the paint chip.

Maybe it was a printing error that caused almost every color in the book to be browner than the paint chip at the store, but I expected the colors to at least be close. They were note even close.

Bottom line, this book was not worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW!.......2005-06-18

Whether you're relocating by chance or by choice, the Fallers have given you all the information you'll ever need to make a successful move...all in one book. Moving the Nest is a reader-friendly approach to dealing with the demands of finding a new place to live, picking up your entire life and moving on. Sharing the travails and rewards of the Fallers' research is not only interesting and poignant, but their information, carefully thought out and meticulously organized, takes the guesswork out of one of life's most emotional situations (moving ranks third in this category, following the death of a spouse or divorce). The Fallers go through it all with you hand-in-hand, providing lists of everything you need to do, ask, and follow-up on. They even offer sound, sage advice about how to fit into your new community. In the end you'll feel as if you've had a personal team of relocation advisors. A definite must for the soon-to-relocate.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the average middle income couple.......2002-02-02

I learned some very valuable tips for relocating - things I hadn't thought of. However, overall, I feel this book is not for the average middle income couple. The couple who shares their story of relocating seems to have an abundance of money and other resources, never short on cash - spending enormous amounts for travelling to other areas, dining, shopping, etc. Also, job prospects don't really factor into the equation, as they didn't even pursue employment prior to relocating. Both now lawyers, I'm certain they will find employment extremely easily in some capacity or another.

For myself and my husband, we need more a more practical, down-to-earth approach to relocating, making employment opportunities a priority.
