Book Description

This book highlights important content necessary to pass the CPC exam. It includes all the content sections found in the exam AND two full practice exams with answers and rationales. Using a general outline format, the text covers anatomy and terminology for each body area, reimbursement issues, and an overview of CPT, ICD-9-CM, and HCPCS coding. Unit IV contains a pre-exam, modeled after the actual AAPC CPC certification exam. Also included is a bound-in CD-ROM with a post-exam, (which has the same content as the pre-exam), along with a final exam.

5 out of 5 stars This book was very helpful for preparing for my exam........2007-10-05

I thought this book was very informative and helpful in preparing me for the CPC Exam.I liked the Cd-Rom which was included because that helped me monitor my own progress in reference to what i learned from the material in the book and also if I could complete the exam in the time allotted for me to take it.I would recommend future exam books like these to others who may be taking the same exam in the future.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT GREAT GREAT!.......2007-06-10

THe content is thorough and well presented. Includes your medical terminology and anatomy with the prospective system being taught within each chapter! Chapter quizes and op reports are terrific. GREAT tool for preparing to take the CPC exam!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for coding students.......2007-05-01

This book helped me a great deal to study for my final in the PMCC course. I would reccomend in highly.

4 out of 5 stars Great practice.......2007-03-14

This book truly helped me prepare for the AAPC National exam. The book provides you with 2 different practice exams that are almost equivalent to the questions on the actual exam. Time is a factor when you are actually taking the exam. You are provided 5 hours for 150 questions, and although that sounds like alot of time, it really is not. As this book comes with a CD that times you while taking the practice tests, I feel that it helped me get a better feel of how much time is really required to complete the exam. I passed the exam that I took in Feb 07 and I honestly feel that this book contributed to my passing.

5 out of 5 stars CCS CODING EXAM REVIEW - CERTIFICATION STEP.......2007-09-18

Even though I have not yet taken the exam, I have found the book to be an excellent resource before the exam, and will continue to use the book as a reference book after I take the exam. Very user friendly.

3 out of 5 stars CSS Exam Prep.......2007-07-30

The book is very complete as information with many details that one would need refreshing every so often. Each chapter has a test, a very good test I can say. The downfall is the CD; there is no feed back to your answers, only the percentage you achieved. That may not be enough for someone who is trying to learn. We do learn from our mistakes, so no feed back, how would one know what did wrong?
The CD is the downfall for this book.

1 out of 5 stars do not buy this book.......2007-05-07

I bought three CCS review guides to prepare for the CCS exam. This one was NO help whatsoever. I had been studying with my other two books (AHIMA's and Thompson's) and picked this one up the weekend before the test. I liked that it had CCS-like exams to take on a CD. I was studying with a friend of mine so we both decided to take the pre-test. This was the day before we took the exam. I scored -103, yes negative 103 and she scored 30, meaning we both flunked. We were so discouraged. so threw that book aside and called it a day. The CD and the book gave us no hint as to what we did wrong with the test, what we needed to study further. No help whatsoever.
We both took the CCS the next day and passed with flying colors. If we had let this book discourage us we would not now be both CCS certified.

If I could give it no stars I would

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

I scored a 790 on the U.S. History SAT 2 using this book and "The Best Test Preparation for AP United States History" by REA. Because I took the AP and SAT test around the same time, I studied mostly from the AP book, which had more comprehensive reviews. However, the practice tests in this book were quite helpful.

I found the detailed explanation particularly helpful,it also provides you with in-depth knowledge of the whole U.S history

I started reading this book a week before the test, and it helped a great deal! The format is excellent and the questions are like the ones on the actual test. If you studied for the AP US History test before taking the SAT II, this will be a breeze to go through.

ABOUT THE TEST
The Advanced Placement Program is designed to allow high school students to pursue college-level studies while attending high school. The three-hour five-minute AP U.S. History exam is usually given to high school students who have completed a year's study in a college-level U.S. History course. The test results are then used to determine the awarding of course credit and/or advanced course placement in college.

According to the College Board, students taking this exam are called upon to demonstrate "systematic factual knowledge" and bring to bear critical, persuasive analysis of the full sweep of U.S. history. This is why we make every effort to establish and build upon context for you, rather than encouraging rote memorization of disconnected facts.

The AP U.S. History Exam is divided into two sections:

1) Multiple-Choice: This section is composed of 80 multiple-choice questions designed to gauge your ability to understand and analyze U.S. history from the Colonial period to the present. The majority of the questions, however, are based on 19th- and 20th-century history. This section tests factual knowledge, scope of preparation, and knowledge-based analytical skills. You'll have 55 minutes to complete this section, which accounts for 50 percent of your final grade.

2) Free-Response: This section is composed of three essay questions designed to measure your ability to write coherent, intelligent, well-organized essays on historical topics. The essays require you to demonstrate mastery of historical interpretation and the ability to express views and knowledge in writing. The essays may relate documents to different areas, analyze common themes of different time periods, or compare individual and group experiences which reflect socioeconomic, racial, gender, and ethnic differences. Part A consists of a mandatory 15-minute reading period, followed by 45 minutes during which you must answer a document-based question (DBQ), which changes from year to year. In Part B the student chooses to answer on two of the topics that are given. You will have 70 minutes to write these essays. The free-response section counts for 50 percent of your final grade.

These topics are broken down into thirds:
- Political Institutions (1/3rd)
- Social and Economic Change (1/3rd)
- Behavior and Public Policy, Diplomacy and International Relations, Intellectual and Cultural Development (1/3rd)

The time periods covered are as follows:
- Pre-Colonial through 1789 (1/6th of exam)
- 1790-1914 (1/2 of exam)
- 1915-present (1/3rd of exam)

ABOUT THE REVIEW SECTION
This book begins with REA's concise yet thorough 230-page review of U.S. history designed to acquaint you with the exam's scope of coverage. Our review covers these topics and historical time periods:

- The Colonial Period (1500-1763)
- The American Revolution (1763-1787)
- The United States Constitution (1787-1789)
- The New National (1789-1824)
- Jacksonian Democracy and Westward Expansion (1824-1850)
- Sectional Conflict and The Causes of the Civil War (1850-1860)
- The Civil War and Reconstruction (1860-1877)
- Industrialism, War, and the Progressive Era (1877-1912)
- Wilson and World War I (1912-1920)
- The Roaring Twenties and Economic Collapse (1920-1929)
- The Great Depression and the New Deal (1929-1941)
- World War II and the Post-War Era (1941-1960)
- The New Frontier, Vietnam, and Social Upheaval (1960-1972)
- Watergate, Carter, and the New Conservatism (1972-2001)

SCORING THE EXAM
The multiple-choice section of the exam is scored by crediting each correct answer with one point and deducting one-fourth of a point for each incorrect answer. You will neither receive a credit nor suffer a deduction for unanswered questions. The free-response essays are graded by instructors and professors from across the country who come together each June for a week of non-stop AP essay grading. Each essay booklet is read and scored by several graders. Each grader provides a score for the individual essays. The DBQ is scored on a scale from 0 to 15, 0 being the lowest and 15 the highest. Each topic-based essay receives a score from 0 to 9. These scores are conceal...

5 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2007-07-21

I scored a 5 on the AP U.S. History exam using this book. Both the reviews and practice tests were very helpful. I especially enjoyed the reviews, and used them extensively to study for tests in my AP history class.

5 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted!.......2007-06-20

I bought the REA AP US History book to prepare over the summer for the course in fall. The history review is very detailed and seems to contain all the info I'll need! I'm very happy with the condition of the book- it was the second cheapest on the list of Used Items- by BrokenBindings- and it arrived in perfect condition. The only thing I'm dissappointed at is the delivery. Amazon cited only 2 days for delivery, and it took 9.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2007-01-22

this review book is the best out there. i bought it second hand so i didn't get the CD with it, but the book covers everything. i use the textbook "america's history" by henretta, 7edition, and although very thorough, this book puts it in a consciese (sp?) form but includes everything ... good for cramming.

5 out of 5 stars Good for your money!.......2006-12-25

I prepared for the APUSH exam last May just by reading this book for TWO WEEKS (and I read an older version of this guide). I only stopped at the 1970s and still received a 4 on this exam. I highly recommend this; you will be satisfied. If I read this study guide twice and more thoroughly then I would have received a 5.

Buy this book, study it THOROUGHLY, and feel very prepared on the day of the exam.

5 out of 5 stars Best review book for AP US History.......2006-08-25

This is with no doubt the best review guide that you can buy for AP US History, if you use it to its full potential, no questions asked.

The review material is around 200 pages long, and all the important facts and information that you could need for those possible topics on the exam can be found there. Since there is such a large amount of review material though, I would recommend purchasing this book early in the year and highlighting important things in each section, so when you study for the AP test a month or so before the actual AP test you won't have to freak out about what parts you'll need to read out of the entire 200 pages of review (or just skipping it altogether.

Besides the excellent review this book provides, the best feature of this book in my opinion would be the six review tests it provides, along with about 6 sample essays for each of the tests. I did not do any of the essays myself; beginning in early April I simply went through ones I thought might be important topics on the exam, read them, highlighted them, and then studied them. As for the 6 multiple choice parts of the exam, I completed about 3 of these, and highlighted ones I got wrong. I would recommend doing one practice test a week before the exam (since I started them in april I only completed three) and reviewing only the ones that you get wrong.

By doing everything I mentioned above with this book, I got a 5 on the exam (2006). The two FRQ (Free Response Questions)'s I had to write for the actual AP exam were practically the same as two of the essays I had read in this book, so it really was an invaluable tool.

All this being said, if you buy this book at least a few months before the AP test it will really help you on it; if you buy it only a short time before the test you should probably just skip the review and try a few practice tests, look at the ones you got wrong, and study that time period (and of course read some of the essays).

Book Description

This book highlights important content necessary to pass the CPC-H exam. It includes all the content sections found in the exam AND two full practice exams with answers and rationales. Using a general outline format, the text covers anatomy and terminology for each body area, reimbursement issues, and an overview of CPT, ICD-9-CM, and HCPCS coding. Unit IV contains a pre-exam, modeled after the actual AAPC CPC-H certification exam. Also included is a bound-in CD-ROM with a post-exam, (which has the same content as the pre-exam), along with a final exam.

I was somewhat disappointed with this book. I thought that it would have CPT exercises at the end of each section, but it didn't. All this book consists of is a brief overview of CPT codes. It also has a section on anatomy, terminology, and pathophysiology (these sections do have have brief exercises with answers). Carol Buck's Step by Step book is much better. There is also a pre-test at the end of book and a post test on a cd (that is included).

2 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money!.......2007-07-17

This book is terrible! It does not accurately portray the kinds of questions featured in the AP exam and should only be used after every other available resource has been exhausted.

Personally, I would recommend (with 5 stars of satisfaction) trying Modern European History by Birdsall S. Viault if you are looking for a review of European history.

Modern European History

4 out of 5 stars Good Overall, but not for short term studying........2006-09-30

I bought this book in late January. I covered a majority of the book over the next three months, and it helped a lot. The text is very dense, and I felt that it overkilled on some of the people, I swear they talked about anyone who ever did anything in europe, however the review overall is very good. However, this is most definitely not a one month or less review book. I'll admit that after the beginning of april, I studied too much, and then stopped studying at all for about three weeks, which was the critical studying period...in any case I got a four on the test. This book was pretty awesome overall, however some of the DBQ test questions were completely random, and in my teacher's point of view, unrealisitic.

My greatest recommendation was that you DO NOT get the Princeton Review for Euro...it was HORRIBLE...

2 out of 5 stars Not Recommended.......2006-06-30

I disliked this book and highly recommend that students in an AP European History course refrain from purchasing it. The best AP European History study guides are brief and concise, and have only the information necessary to do well on the exam. This book, however, is too comprehensive. It left me wondering, "Do I really need to know all this stuff?" And you don't. Furthermore, the practice tests are different from the actual test in terms of types of questions and of content. Although their FRQ's are similar to the ones on the AP Exam, their sample essay answers are bad examples of good essays. Cracking the AP European History Exam from the Princeton Review is much better. Save your money and buy that instead. I gave this two stars instead of one because it makes an OK reference book, but a bad AP study guide.

2 out of 5 stars Tests may be worth it, but review sucks.......2006-05-03

Let me start by saying that I haven't taken the test yet, but I'm so fed up with this book I wanted to share. I bought this book (REA AP European History) after using the REA AP US History last year. I got a 5 and found it insightful, well-written and clear. This Euro book is the exact opposite. The organization is extremely confusing. The writing is just bad and convoluted. And it repeats events and people multiple times with out adding new information. I have a sneaking suspision that a different person wrote each chapter and they were stuck together without anyone reading each other's sections. They talk about June Days and the Frankfurt Assembaly twice within five pages in two different chapters. Chapter three ends with these two revolutions while four begins with them. While I agree that they would fit into each chapter. I don't need to read what is essentially the same information again without even a nod to fact that it is a review of the previous sections. I thought that we were talking about another June Days riot until I got to the second sentance. The 6 practice test are very useful however. I have the CD version of the tests in the back of the book and they are excelent, but for the review section . . . my friend Allie is using the Idiot's Guide to European History which she loves, I've been borrowing it on occasions where I get confused. I don't believe it comes with tests, though. If you're willing, I would use these CD-ROM tests and another review.

3 out of 5 stars Good for the details, bad for the AP as a whole.......2006-04-30

This book is a great resource for the details of European history. It also has practice tests that are harder than the AP. Yes, it will give you a releif when you see the exam, that the exam questions are much less detailed and specific. All that being said, this book is not a good resource for preparing for the AP, if you have limited time and/or patience. This book takes many hours to drag through, and is saturated with facts. Most of these facts are extraneous, and I found myself skimming the last 60 pages of the review for the important information. Most of the information in the book is beyond the scope of the AP and will overwhelm you. I know it did to me. However, if combined with a book such as Princeton review, it can work as a part of a killer combination. This book will bore you but teach you the details, while the other book will show you the overall picture and the heart of the information. My rating is 3.5, but I rounded it down to a three because this book does not help you see the important facts and only concentrates on the extraneous details instead of the big picture.

5 out of 5 stars The best review book.......2007-08-23

This review book is excellent for many reasons. Its review itself is straight-forward to read and is presented in a way that is not boring. While I would fall asleep reading Princeton Review, I was able to focus on the text and review well. The way the author bolded important events and people was also extremely helpful. There are also 10 multiple choice questions at the end of every section that help you see if you have understood what was just covered. The practice tests were somewhat easier than the actual test, but with a good teacher, you will be able to practice real tests. Each question of the practice multiple-choice tests is explained in depth, which is extremely helpful. The practice essay section was weak because the essay topics were not as in depth or specific as the actual exam. Essay examples were also lacking and because of the weak essay section in this review book, I went to Princeton Review's review book.
Cracking the AP European History Exam, 2006-2007 Edition (College Test Prep)

I highly recommend this book. It is truly the best review book I have seen, ever. I wish I had used this throughout the school year in my class instead of a month before the AP. I recommend reviewing with this book, with the Princeton Review European History review book as a supplement for the essay section (Although, in my opinion, if you cannot write essays, there is no hope for you anyhow in any review books. Your best bet is to read as many successful DBQs and FRQs as possible [examples can be given to you by your teacher] and get a feel for how to write them. That way is the best way to learn how to write good DBQs and FRQs).

If you are interested, I received a 5, which I credit to a solid score from the multiple-choice section (as in, this review book helped very much) and DBQ.

5 out of 5 stars Great for AP.......2007-06-02

the book was is great condition and was very helpful for the AP exam

4 out of 5 stars AP European History Exam was a booger, this book helped.......2007-05-20

I took AP European History over the '06-'07 school year. It's a good class to take. Now, European History is so broad that it is one of the hardest histories for people to understand.

Use this book to review for your AP exam at least a month in advance.
- I did not start early. This book is great if you have enough time to digest the contents. If you are starting late, get the Cracking the AP European History Exam, 2006-2007 Edition (College Test Prep) instead.
- Use this book throughout the school year. It would have been amazing to have when I was reviewing for test. It has great charts and graphs. There are also review checks after the end of each section.

*Also note, one of the reasons that I gave this book a four was because of minor inaccuracies.

4 out of 5 stars great!.......2007-04-11

The book is great, easy to read, and very informative. The questions at the end of a lesson are useful, though kind of easy. I haven't looked at the practice exams, but it is very well laid out. The chronology page at the end of sections is good so you know what is going on at the time period in different parts of Europe.

I recommend it :)

5 out of 5 stars Concise and comprehensive.......2007-01-03

The end of chapter questions are very easy.
The book gives a no-nonsense review of the AP European History topics.

Book Description

Arguably the most influential document in the history of urban planning, Daniel Burnham’s 1909 Plan of Chicago, coauthored by Edward Bennett and produced in collaboration with the Commercial Club of Chicago, proposed many of the city’s most distinctive features, including its lakefront parks and roadways, the Magnificent Mile, and Navy Pier. Carl Smith’s fascinating history reveals the Plan’s central role in shaping the ways people envision the cityscape and urban life itself.

Smith’s concise and accessible narrative begins with a survey of Chicago’s stunning rise from a tiny frontier settlement to the nation’s second-largest city. He then offers an illuminating exploration of the Plan’s creation and reveals how it embodies the renowned architect’s belief that cities can and must be remade for the better. The Plan defined the City Beautiful movement and was the first comprehensive attempt to reimagine a major American city. Smith points out the ways the Plan continues to influence debates, even a century after its publication, about how to create a vibrant and habitable urban environment.

Richly illustrated and incisively written, his insightful book will be indispensable to our understanding of Chicago, Daniel Burnham, and the emergence of the modern city.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Gripping, tightly written book.......2006-12-17

As an architecture tour guide, I've read "The Plan of Chicago" and know some Chicago history. Smith succinctly summarizes prevailing circumstances so the reader knows the context of the development of The Plan, but he deftly includes colorful and precise detail. The book is under 200 pages, reflecting a distinctive self-restraint by this distinguished scholar at Northwestern University. Moving from background of Chicago history and of Daniel Burnham, Smith summarizes the Plan's development, describes the other players, analyzes the Plan's effects, and brings readers quickly up-to-date with urban planning of today. This excellent narrative, supplemented with photographs not commonly seen, ends with a "bibliographic essay" to guide interested readers in their subsequent investigations.
