After three centuries of oppression, black Americans had reached their limit. Tired of inferior schools, "Jim Crow" laws, and the threat of being lynched for trying to vote, African-Americans risked their lives for justice - most notably in the 1950s and '60s.

This deserves more than six stars!.......2005-02-24
Wow! I've always been interested in the Civil Rights movement, so naturally I was drawn to this book when I spied it in the bookstore. I especially liked that I got a discount on it, which is always a nice thing. I paged through it in the bookstore, was impressed, bought it, took it home, and was just blown away. It's a very informative and outstanding book on the subject and if you are interested in this topic, then you should definitely check this book out. It also contains scores of photographs, so it is somewhat like an encyclopedia. It definitely helped me gain a better understanding of this dark part of our history.
Once again - WOW!
Great Book!!.......2004-03-13
I highly recommend this book to teenagers because it tells you about a lot of things that you don't learn in the classroom.
exceptional view of history.......2004-02-29
The Civil Rights Chronicle belongs in every library, every school, and every home. This honest look at the enslavement of people is not to be missed. The struggle for independence and freedom is chronicled here for all, black, white, or 'other', to read and understand. There are so many things in this world that should never be allowed to happen again!
Yet they continue to happen.
Book Description
In this timely, highly original, and controversial narrative, New York Times bestselling author Mark Kurlansky discusses nonviolence as a distinct entity, a course of action, rather than a mere state of mind. Nonviolence can and should be a technique for overcoming social injustice and ending wars, he asserts, which is why it is the preferred method of those who speak truth to power.
Nonviolence is a sweeping yet concise history that moves from ancient Hindu times to present-day conflicts raging in the Middle East and elsewhere. Kurlansky also brings into focus just why nonviolence is a “dangerous” idea, and asks such provocative questions as: Is there such a thing as a “just war”? Could nonviolence have worked against even the most evil regimes in history?
Kurlansky draws from history twenty-five provocative lessons on the subject that we can use to effect change today. He shows how, time and again, violence is used to suppress nonviolence and its practitioners–Gandhi and Martin Luther King, for example; that the stated deterrence value of standing national armies and huge weapons arsenals is, at best, negligible; and, encouragingly, that much of the hard work necessary to begin a movement to end war is already complete. It simply needs to be embraced and accelerated.
Engaging, scholarly, and brilliantly reasoned, Nonviolence is a work that compels readers to look at history in an entirely new way. This is not just a manifesto for our times but a trailblazing book whose time has come.

Good primer.......2007-07-30
Kurlansky's rather small book (only about 180pgs) shows a number of examples of nonviolence, from secular and religious influences, that are presented in a fluid manner, not done in a text-book fashion so you won't feel like you're reading a how-to book.
Out of all of the books I have read on the subject of nonviolence, I didn't really pick up on anything I hadn't already read or learned about elsewhere, however, this would make a good PRIMER for those new to the philosophy of nonviolence. If you're interested in some real meat and potatos, look elsewhere (Muste, Zinn, Sharp, Wink, McCarthy).
Am I saying it's a bad book? Definitely not, I even plan to keep it in my library. It was well written, and my only wish is that he decides to write a more in-depth book in the future.
See my Listmania list for all of the books I have read on nonviolence.
Nonviolence.......2007-06-08
Excellent. A must-read for anyone who is interested in having a future.
Unbalanced history. Looking through a flawed prism........2007-06-03
Kurlansky paints a picture by using only a single color. His book passes for real history without any of the balance that drives most real history books. I liked his differentiation of active nonviolence from real pacifism, but he never seems to explain the consequences for nonviolent action in truly horrific circumstances.
For example, he says that the world might have stopped Hitler if more people had tried nonviolent methods of resistance. He does not say, as most contemporary historians believe, that we would have been unable to invade Europe if we'd given Hitler another 4 years to start a war. In that regard, most of Europe would be speaking German today.
He is also very crass toward the people who suffer under dictators, nearly ignoring the atrocities that were inflicted on conquered populations. In one of his most offensive analyses, he says that the holocaust was not really stopped by the war, but certainly was started by it. He also casually explains that the Britons caused the bombing of London and ignores the casualties that German bombings inflicted.
I was also disappointed that he real atrocities, like human experimentation on prisoners by both the Germans and Japanese, the rape of Nanjing, 20 million deaths in Stalin's Russia, and German efforts to euthanize a variety of undesirables while the world negotiated for peace.
However, if you can read through his personal perspective that nonviolence really could work if we just gave it a chance, you'd find some good explanations of a few nonviolent movements.
Overall, he makes the case for nonviolence simply by saying that violence is so horrible, we should try anything to avoid it. If you consider warfare an end, not a means, you will wholeheartedly agree with everything in this book. However, if you understand history as a series of difficult choices for people in unforgiving circumstances, you may find the book too tedious.
Possibly the best introduction yet written on Nonviolence........2007-03-29
Mark Kurlansky has written a very concise, fascinating and readable history of nonviolence as both a philosophy and an effective tactic for social change. He begins with a discussion of the spiritual roots of nonviolence in each of the major world religions and traces how each religion was subverted when it was co-opted by the state which began using it as an instrument to justify state power through warfare. We see this most dramatically with Pope Urban II's historic speech that began the Crusades. Variations of this speech, which asserted that the war was God's will and the obligation of every "good Christian," have been used by politicians ever since to drag their reluctant citizenry into bloody wars.
Kurlansky goes on to define common themes that have driven one war after another over many centuries from the Crusades through the current war in Iraq and concludes with 'The 25 Lessons,' including:
3. Practitioners of nonviolence are seen as enemies of the state.
4. Once a state takes over a religion, the religion loses its nonviolent
teachings.
6. Somewhere behind every war there are always a few founding lies.
8. People who go to war start to resemble their enemy.
9. A conflict between a violent and a nonviolent force is a moral
argument. If the violent side can provoke the nonviolent side into
violence, the violent side has won.
10. The problem lies not in the nature of man, but the nature of power.
11. The longer a war lasts, the less popular it becomes.
12. The state imagines it is impotent without a military because it cannot
conceive of power without force.
15. A shooting war is not necessary to overthrow an established power but
is used to consolidate the revolution itself.
16. Violence does not resolve. It always leads to more violence.
20. Wars do not have to be sold to the general public if they can be
carried out by an all-volunteer professional military.
21. Once you start the business of killing, you just get "deeper and
deeper" without limits.
22. Violence always comes with a supposedly rational explanation - which is
only dismissed as irrational if the violence fails.
25. The hard work of beginning a movement to end war has already been done.
I've read widely on the subject of nonviolence and this is this is the most concise, clear, pragmatic book I've read yet. This book also includes a bibliography of other classic works on the subject for further reading. Kurlansky has done an excellent job of writing in a language that Americans in particular will understand. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone interested in peace and nonviolence and I'm confident it will change your thinking. Peace.
Not a Convincing Case.......2007-03-20
Well, no real case or argument for nonviolent activism at all: just a survey at times both interesting and informative of the idea's effects. No real debate because no true investigation of the other side of the argument, The Just War. Rather at times just a mean caricature of the usual suspects: Bush, Reagan, Pope Urban; but to throw in Augustine and devote no close attention to his argument, well, that's too bad. Why then give it four stars and not lower? Because it's not a bad broad-brush survey of one side of the argument, the side which is frustrated with reality and wants world peace now and sees the failure to have it as evidence of either bad will or stupidity, probably both. But the book does have its emphasis in the right place: "nonviolence", it says, is positive, courageous, and effective; and given its bias and emphasis, the book is hopeful if grim. Besides, if you listen carefully and long enough to the side you do not often hear, you're bound to pick up something, and if you're lucky, some of its proper good will. The author should try it with Augustine.
Book Description
During the Second World War, six million Jews--as well as other targeted groups such as Gypsies, Poles, the handicapped, and homosexuals--were systematically murdered by Adolf Hitlers Nazis and their collaborators. The Holocaust Chronicle, written and fact-checked by top scholars, recounts the long, complex, anguishing story of the most terrible crime of the 20th century. A massive, oversized hardcover of more than 750 pages, The Holocaust Chronicle: A History in Words and Pictures is an excitingly unique, not for-profit endeavor that is a personal project of the publisher, Louis Weber, C.E.O. of Chicago-based Publications International, Ltd. As a book publisher, I am in a unique position to create this ambitious project, Weber says. The son of Polish Jews who settled in America in the 1920s, Weber conceived The Holocaust Chronicle in order to give something back to the Jewish community, and to bring the truth of the Holocaust to as many people as possible. The mission of The Holocaust Chronicle is to report the facts, clearly and free of bias or agenda. Featured are more than 2000 photographs selected after intensive research in the collections of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. and Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, as well as other archives and private collections located around the world. Many of these images are in full color and most are published in book form for the first time. The photographs chronicle the Holocaust in starkly visual terms, capturing victims and perpetrators alike, as well as Allied leaders and the multitude of peripheral figures. Caption-text is detailed, and rich with facts and human interest. The books 3000-item timeline of Holocaust-related events is unprecedented in its scope and ambition. Spanning the years 1000 B.C. to 1999 A.D., the timeline pinpoints deportations, atrocities, and important developments in the Nazis Final Solution, as well as individual acts of cruelty, compassion, and heroic Jewish resistance. Illustrated chapter-opener essays place the most important years of the Holocaust and its immediate aftermath, 1933-1946, into sharp perspective. Nearly 300 sidebars detail significant people, places, issues, and events. More than 30 full-color, specially commissioned maps show the reader where events took place.
The sentiments and hatreds that gave rise to the Holocaust were not confined to the 12 years of Adolf Hitlers Thousand-Year Reich. The books illustrated prologue surveys the antisemitism that was expressed over many centuries in Europe as bloody pogroms, exclusionary laws, and other persecution. The illustrated epilogue documents the long, painful healing process that has lasted for generations and may never be completed.

Excellent Book on The Holocaust.......2007-04-12
They say, "a picture is worth a thousand words." But sometimes you need to put words into context to understand the picture. This encyclopedia does just that: It chronicles the history of the Holocaust from beginning to end, providing literally hundreds of pictures with detailed commentary. Several scholars and historians paid their contributions to this project, making it a very comprehensive book. What you will find inside may very well change your views on humanity.
The authors will take you on a journey to examine one of History's darkest events. And while you may wonder how a "civilized" society could possibly be capable and willing of committing such heinous crimes, the authors do offer some explanations. A brief history of anti-Semitism is outlined and its links to the Third Reich are pointed out to explain the roots of the Holocaust. The slaughter of the Gypsies, Jehovah Witnesses, homosexuals, mentally ill and others are also documented, including the controversies surrounding the Vatican, in which the authors objectively cite both defenders and critics of Pius XII and the Catholic Church, leaving the reader to form his or her own opinion. From the rise of Hitler to the aftermath of the Final Solution, this book covers it all.
Anyone looking for a complete, yet introductory study on the Holocaust should pick up this book. Although it is massive in size, don't be intimidated; most pages are filled with pictures. I must warn, however, that many of the pictures are very explicit, and personally, I would not recommend anyone under 14 to view them. But aside from that, this book is very well put together and it will inform you as much as it will shock you. I highly recommend it.
The Holocaust Chronicle.......2007-02-16
Excellent source of information. My 16 year old granddaughter is studying the Holocaust in school this year and she has a younger sister and brother that will find this helpful at a later date. I feel so strongly that this period of our history should never be forgotten, so I am pleased to leave this book out for anyone to pick up while visiting me.
The enabling preconditions, actual events and aftermath of the Holocaust........2006-09-13
Three books in one: A detailed 1) history, 2)timeline and 3)personal vignettes that create a rich hologram-like view of the enabling preconditions, actual events and aftermath of the Genocide of the Jews of Europe at the hands of the Nazis.
Back in July of this year, I wrote a review of Ellie Wiesel's "Night," a new edition that had been translated by his own daughter. This small book captured the essence of one man's subjective experience with the subject of this much larger effort, contributed to by dozens of historians and scholars and published by a non-profit organization. This is not a `sit down and read a book today' publication. Each of it's 750 richly illustrated pages are packed with personal stories about individual people, a detailed on-going time-line, detailed with specific events beginning in 1500 BCE (The modern Jewish term for "BC", standing for "Before the Common Era."), and passing through the establishment of the State of Israel and into the late 1990's, and a continuous narrative history of more details than most people have ever imagined were available in the telling of this particularly horrific tale of humanity gone wrong. There is, in fact, so much information, that each page calls for a slow overview, and then at least several readings to capture the totality of what is being presented. It is a book to which ongoing time must be devoted to really appreciate what it gives us: As Dragnet's Sgt. Joe Friday would have said, "Nothing but the facts."
The Preconditions:
Through hundreds of historical, scholarly, organizational and literary references, this book makes it clear that without certain preconditions having been developing in European (and, indeed, in world-wide) culture for many centuries, Hitler could never of orchestrated what in the Jewish Community is referred to as the Sho'ah. Ascribing Germany's readiness to follow their fascist leader and his cronies into the annihilation of about six-million Jews as well as millions of Catholics, Gypsies, Jehovah's Witnesses, physically handicapped and mentally ill people, homosexuals and others to the aftermath of Versailles is shown to be a gross over-simplification. Anti Semitism (not always known by that now well-known name) had existed across the face of much of the globe for many centuries. The realities across the world, indeed including here in our own United States, were active contributors to creating the preconditions that allowed the Holocaust to happen. Impressive in this particular book is that unlike so many others, the authors painstakingly provide documentary evidence and facts that support this and other key concepts. As is the case with the other two parallel tracks of this volume, the actual events of the Holocaust itself and the aftermath, the preconditions are examined and documented through all three of the `tracks' of this book: The narrative history, the timeline and the individual storied and personal vignettes.
The Event Itself:
The Holocaust itself - the trail leading up to the actualization of what was referred to, privately amongst the Nazi leadership, as the "Final Solution?" - and their ultimate efforts to completely eliminate Jewry from the face of the parts of the world they controlled are carefully documented as well. This is the part of the story best known to modern audiences, but is given here a context far more comprehensive than what has been attempted before - and it is all written in non-technical terms that make the massive information it contains available to most people who 1) can read, 2) are interested in the subject, and 3) are willing to spend the appreciable time it takes to go through and absorb the rather massive amount of information contained in these pages. The events of planful, deliberate genocide are not and can not be fully separated from the preconditions described both earlier in the book and periodically referred to as the timeline progresses.
No one is held harmless. From the Nazis themselves, to the many nations of the Earth, including our own, that denied sanctuary via more open immigration policies in the late 1930's when it became undeniably clear what the goals and activities of Hitler's regime was.
The Aftermath:
This section of the book concerns itself with what happened as a result of the genocide, both in the short run and continuing into modern times. The establishment of the State of Israel, the multiple issues associated with that; the Germany of the post-war era, both as a modern economic force as well as the bearer of so much of the responsibility for one of mankind's darkest hours, the relationships of the Catholic Church and of the American government to the past, present and future of humanity: None of these escape the attention of the authors and compilers of this impressive, comprehensive and engaging book.
Suffice it to say that this review only scratches the surface of the material covered and the depths to which it is articulated in this volume. I make no apologies for being relatively brief. If you have the interest and the time, this is one of those handful of published works that just might change your life. It is simply not possible to have so much revealed, in so many forms at so many levels, and not be somehow reshaped by the experience.
The most reader-friendly and clearest description of one of humanities greatest calamities I have ever read. I think you will agree.
A Crying Shame...And A Constant Reminder!.......2006-06-10
As a child who lived in the Chicago housing projects prior to moving to Germany I became lost for words as I turned the pages of one of the most moving books I've ever experienced. Places I've seen as a playful child running across the country side now become surreal in my mind as I think about the innocent lives that were slaughtered on that same ground. And now that I've observed the photographs of my Jewish brothers and sisters in this book "The Holocaust Chronicle" some things will never be the same for me. I also believe that you will view life differently after you've read this book.
For one this book describes the ghetto's of Europe during the Holocaust using pictures and words that one would never imagine. It has so much depth and meaning even in the words that it is quite amazing. For instance the word "ghetto" (which in the United States has become a word referencing the slums where poor Americans live) will no longer have the same meaning for me as it use to. Some call the Housing Projects that I came from in Chicago a ghetto...but this is a poor, poor use of the word now that I've observed the ghettos of Europe during the Holocaust. Read the book and you'll see exactly what I mean.
The Holocaust Chronicle is an excellent resource for virtually anything you would like to know about this event in history. This book should instantly become a part of all libraries in every community, private and personal.
Having lived in Germany for nearly 5 years as a lad I've alway's considered myself quite a history buff especially concerning military affairs since my father spent his whole life serving the U.S. Army. But I must say this amazing book proves that I am very ignorant of what went on from 1933-1946. The humiliation, the physical and mental anguish, even the use of art and symbols were all reconstructed to try to destroy the Jew but thank God they were delivered from the hands of their enemies. Although this book does not turn its face away from death but sometimes deals with it head on it still contains with in it the hope of deliverance, the determination of faith and the triumph of those who suffer persecution.
I have now done much diligence to understand this part of history so that I can connect with other human beings on this planet in a way that is respectful. I must say Louis Weber the publisher and all the contributing Authors and Consultants who poured their hearts and souls into the development of "The Holocaust Chronicle" deserve much credit.
Although there is much suffering between these pages the details within this book give us great understanding. It helps us all to realize, respect and appreciate why we should be committed to never allow this to happen again regardless of our religious beliefs, cultural, racial or ethnic background. As you turn the pages you will be exposed to the criminals but at the same time you will find yourself rejoicing when heroic men and women went beyond what their government would not give them the authority to do. Please hurry up and get this book, read it today and share your ideas with others as I dedicate this review to my Jewish mother Anita Gold.

Nothing short of extraordinary........2006-03-11
This book is massive! It is far larger than any of my college texts. Yet, every one of the nearly 800 pages is poignant and necessary. This easy-to-read chronicle of one of the most incomprehensible tragedies in all of history is extremely well-written in prose that is eloquent and yet still quite succinct. Nearly each page contains photographs that display different perspectives on the Holocaust, each one helping to comprise the complete picture of the atrocities which took place. On many pages there are more photographs than words, and each one truly tells its own story. In reading this chronicle and studying the photographs you will experience a range of emotions you never would have believed you were capable of experiencing. It is true that we can never feel how the concentration camp prisoners felt; we can never know the starvation, the death, the oppression that they and others affected by the Holocaust knew all too well--but the Holocaust chronicle brings us perhaps one step closer than we've ever been to understanding this world of unthinkable brutality and suffering.

Customer Reviews:
A Good Book--4 stars.......2007-04-27
Dragonwings is a good book to read because you have a good feeling to know someone's dream came true, like Moonshadow's father's dream. Moonshadow is a young man. When he was just eight years old, he had a chance to join his father who he had never seen before in the United States. He went through a difficult time passing immigration. This book talks about how Chinese people settled down in Chinatown and the experience in 1906 with the big earthquake in San Francisco, and then how Moonshadow and his father relocated to Oakland. Moonshadow's father is a good kite maker, and he has a fabulous dream to make a flying machine. Moon Shadow writes a letter to the Wrights telling them how his father likes to fly too, and wishes they can help him. The father's dream came true when he made a flying machine in 1909. Lawrence Yep's historical novels shows rich traditions and the culture of the Chinese community. I will recommend this book to people who are American born Chinese because they can learn from this book about how difficult it was for their ancesters to get into this country, and how they worked so hard and how they survived in white society, so they will appreciate them. Overall it is a good book to read, I just have some words that were hard to understand for me, maybe because they are too old fashioned.
Upset.......2007-04-18
I was honestly upset with this book not as good as i thought it would be, I mean the story was just boring overall. The only thing I thought was interesting that they used kites and I would be curious to ask the author why.
snooze fest.......2007-02-22
horrible
I am 13 years old and I hate this book
we read it in english class this year. About two people actually fell asleep reading it in 5th period. Really boring. There was one exciting part to the story. The names are hard to keep track of. I also don't like the fact that all throughout this book the boy refers to the white men as "demons". At first I thought the book was suposed to teach a lesson. But in the end it didn't
don't buy this book
Dragonwings.......2006-11-30
Wow,this is the best book I've ever read in years. This book starts off with a boy named Moonshadow,Moonshadows mom,and grandmother. They are in there farm allways workinging in the farm and not having any fun.
Moonshadow always wonders how the goldenmountains (America)looks like. When Moonshadow visits the goldenmountains and finds his dad there. The white demons (white people) are mean to the chinamen and all yhey care about is themselves.
Dragonwings.......2006-05-25
Moonshadow starts out as a shy little boy who lives in China who was curious about The Land of the Golden Mountain (America). Men from China would go to America in search for a better life. This is what Moonshadow's father did. One day Moonshadow was told that he had to choose between either staying in China and never knowing his father or being taken to his father in The Land of the Golden Mountain, he chose to leave. On the boat he was very frightened because he heard the older men telling stories of how they were almost tortured in America which did not make it any easier for Moonshadow to leave China. When he arrives he encounters a couple of "scary" things before they get to where he will be staying. Everyone with the last name of Lee works in a Laundry Shop, which is owned by Uncle Bright Star and White Deer. Moonshadow is greeted with Demon (white people) clothing. He already doesn't like what he sees. Moon shadow faces many difficulties such as being mugged, robbed, being picked on and racism through out the whole story. Towards the end of the story Moonshadow's father Windrider discovers that he wants to peruse his dream and he will need Moonshadow's help to achieve that dream. When he tells everyone that he will be moving out they are hurt and angry. They live by a white demoness and her niece, Miss. Whitlaw and Robin. While they are living there Windrider works as a handy man for Mr. Alger. Everything is perfect until the Earthquake comes. Miss. Whitlaw and Robin, Moonshadow and Windrider have to separate. It is up to Moonshadow to take over there new house because father is working on his dream but, will he finish in time and will it work? You find out!

Not That Great...Save Your Money.......2007-07-28
I originally purchased this book as a reference for my dissertation. It only takes the reading of a few pages to realize that this is anything but an unbiased look at the events leading up to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. The author's obvious hatred of the Bush administration is evident after only reading a few pages and what is being touted as "scholarly research" is nothing more than a bunch of newspaper and magazine articles formed into a book. This doesn't make the work scholarly, it makes the author lazy. The author himself, in the acknowledgement section, even admits he had "volunteers" help him write portions of the book. If you really want to know what terrorism is about, without the political spin, I recommend "The Age of Sacred Terror" by Daniel Benjamin and Steven Simon or "Voices of Terror" by Walter Laqueur. "The Age of Sacred Terror" will give any real scholar of terrorism a much greater insight into the history of terrorism and how that leads to what happened on 9/11. "Voices of Terror" is a great collection of writings by the most notorious terror organizations like Al Qaeda and Hamas and this too will give great insight into the thinking of the leaders of such organizations. Both offer a more unbiased look at terrorism and its relationship to 9/11. If you are doing any type of research and you are planning to use this book---save your money.

Thompson's masterful research project has birthed a resource of immense value to those desirous of an accurate history of the 9/11 tragedy. Each bit of information is followed immediately by its source, and there are nearly 600 pages of relevant documentation in this volume. Thompson's book is, as advertised, comprehensive and thought-provoking. You will not be carrying it in your shirt pocket, but you will want to page through several sections of the book every week, in order to understand the enormity both of 9/11 and of the curious and catastrophic U.S. responses to it.
A 9/11 Study Must.......2007-01-21
For anyone interested in performing an in-depth study of the heinous 9/11 attacks on our nation and our hearts, this book is an absolutely essential starting forum. One can easily surmise the heart-felt dedication of this author and the learning of the basic structure of evil of those who planned, financed and forced this on our country. I highly recommend this book.
Terror Timeline .......2007-01-04
This a great book to use as reference and is laid out in a manner that even a person that does not keep up with the International news can understand and follow. The writer does not give his own ideas and thoughts, he only uses content from other magazines and news publishers. Probably one of the best books I have ever read in regards to the 911 attack, and one that everyone should read and be able to form their own opinion in regards to 911 and our government.
Book Description
"Intensely well researched and an un-put-down-able read, Tina Brown's extraordinary book parts the brocaded velvet and allows us an unprecedented look at the world and mind of the most famous person on the planet. A social commentary, a historical document and a psychological examination, written by a superb investigative journalist."
–Academy Award®
Winning Actress Helen Mirren
Ten years after her death, Princess Diana remains a mystery. Was she “the people’s princess,” who electrified the world with her beauty and humanitarian missions? Or was she a manipulative, media-savvy neurotic who nearly brought down the monarchy?
Only Tina Brown, former Editor-in-Chief of Tatler, England’s glossiest gossip magazine; Vanity Fair; and The New Yorker could possibly give us the truth. Tina knew Diana personally and has far-reaching insight into the royals and the Queen herself.
In The Diana Chronicles, you will meet a formidable female cast and understand as never before the society that shaped them: Diana's sexually charged mother, her scheming grandmother, the stepmother she hated but finally came to terms with, and bad-girl Fergie, her sister-in-law, who concealed wounds of her own. Most formidable of them all was her mother-in-law, the Queen, whose admiration Diana sought till the day she died. Add Camilla Parker-Bowles, the ultimate "other woman" into this combustible mix, and it's no wonder that Diana broke out of her royal cage into celebrity culture, where she found her own power and used it to devastating effect.

Soap Dish in bounded form?.......2007-10-15
Tina Brown certainly researched her subjects which I commend but intertwined it with petty gossip. She minimizes her credibility, the strength of the facts while it seems garnering the future HRH's favors when she uses most opportunities to "dish" Diana. Ms. Brown often ignores the impact of Diana the child bride and her not having an opportunity to mature as a women. Diana was outwitted and outmatched by much older adults. Unfortunately Ms. Brown has fallen into the common trap so many authors do--the inability to leave ther personal biases out of the work. I couldn't finish reading this book, but then again I don't read the National Enquirer in America or Tattler when in London either.
Wonderful Diana Analysis.......2007-10-15
I found this book to be extremely well-researched and written. The author presented some facts from unusual sources that I had not known before, and I am a well versed "student" of Princess Diana. Tina Brown could have been an analyst was she not an author. Her dissecting of the facts and the conclusions she forms are spot on. This book takes a while to get through, simply because of its length. It was quite an undertaking on the author's part, and I believe she deserves credit for presenting an in-depth look at Diana's personality and life in general. A highly recommended read.
The Diana Chronicles.......2007-10-05
It was a very informative book. I learned so much of what the Royals were truly like.
Somewhat trashy, but fun to read.......2007-10-04
When Princess Diana was alive, I never followed her activities
that closely . . . so listening to THE DIANA CHRONICLES, written
and read by Tina Brown, shed much new light on her life that may
well have been familiar to others.
A lot of this information might be considered trashy, though that's no
surprise since Brown had been a former editor-in-chief of TATTLER,
England's glossiest gossip magazine . . . for instance, I learned
such things as the following:
* On his engagement, when asked if he was in love, Prince Charles
replied, "Yes . . . whatever love means."
* Diana had seen Charles only 17 times before they were married.
* Charles was calling Camilia Parker Bowles, his former girlfriend,
on the second day of his honeymoon.
I also learned much about the clothing worn by Princess Diana,
and though that subject might not typically interest me, I found
myself caught up in it because of Brown's descriptive writing style.
a huge disappointment.......2007-10-04
I was really excited to get this book and learn more about Princess Di. I hated this book. It was more of a gossip of Diana and her family. This was very poorly written, and a horrible read. DO NOT BUY IT!!! If you are dying to buy and read, buy mine. I'm selling it on amazon.
Book Description
"The wardens climbed into their truck, ready to leave. 'You'll need about seven cords of firewood. Concentrate on that. You'll have to get it all in before the snow grounds your truck.'""Though I didn't want to ask, it seemed important. 'What's a cord?'"So begins Pete Fromm's seven winter months alone in a tent in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness guarding salmon eggs. After blundering into this forbidding errand as a college lark, Fromm gradually come face to face with the blunt realities of life as a contemporary mountain man. Brutal cold, isolation, and fearful risks balance against the satisfaction of living a unique existence in modern America. This award-winning narrative is a gripping story of adventure, a rousing tale of self-sufficiency, and modern-day Walden. From either perspective, Fromm lives up to his reputation as one of the West's strongest new voices.

A great adventure painted vividly & honestly..................2007-08-29
Started this absorbing adventure when I arrived home from my work day (in the office) & finished 3 hours later. What a thrilling few hours it was too!.
The story starts as a young, immature college guy rather niavely (& foolishly) takes on a 7 month job in the wilds with no experience, knowledge, or realistic idea of how he will cope out of his comfort zone & what it takes to survive on his own during the harsh winter weather living in a tent.
It's surprisingly honest & revealing - most adventurers only recount the highlights & thrills (without exposing their fears & weaknesses).
Pete Fromm writes vividly & from the heart - it takes a courageous man to expose his inner thoughts & anxieties to his readers.
I found some of his descriptions of hunting/killing the wildlife a little graphic (so vegetarians beware), but towards the end of the book his growing maturity & awareness of nature & the lives of creatures in the wild, give me reason to believe he learnt to love & respect the wildlife (even if he still needed to hunt & trap to survive).
By the end of the book, his words come across as skillful as any seasoned writer & it was not surprising that he now has several books published.
I hope all who read this book enjoy it as much as I did....................
Good Stuff!!!.......2007-06-03
What outdoorsman has not dreamed of walking into the woods and living off the land? Fromm does a nice job in explaining what needs to be done to make my dream a reality...he also does a GREAT job in detailing the fact that I belong at home (in the city).
Nice read.......2007-04-30
This was a great book..... read it over a trip to Hawaii....
If you are into camping or wilderness this is a great read... A great Escape!
One of my personal favorites of this genre.......2007-01-23
I truly loved this book on many levels, from the hunting and fishing experiences the author shared to his personal reflections on several moral issues, which I felt were very poignant and truthful.
The majority of this book covers the author's seven-month stay in a canvas tent, deep in the Idaho wilderness during the months of October through May. His job was to watch over and protect millions of salmon eggs that had been cached in the gravel of a nearby river.
His love of mountain man books and the thrill of experiencing nature in all of its variety are ideals that initially lead him to volunteer for the long winter assignment. Later, his enthusiasm changes to loneliness and regret as he faces his separation from his friends and family.
On the surface, his tale recounts his meetings with hunters, guides, outfitters, forest rangers, wardens, and outdoors enthusiasts as they pass by his lonely tent in his remote meadow. He speaks of the extreme winter weather he faced, the wildlife he encountered, and the steps he took to survive in an isolated and severe environment.
The real beauty of this book, however, comes when the author shares how painful moments of loneliness affected him and ultimately how these experiences changed him into a person who became very secure with his own creative abilities and very comfortable with his own company.
He records some very personal reflections regarding what it meant to him to shoot various animals for meat during his long winter stay. As he accompanies various guides and hunters on their hunting trips, he recounts how he felt when others did not view their kills as the resources he believed they were.
The author writes of loss, of waste, of fully utilizing one's resources, of missing one's family and friends and how dear trusted loved ones are to a soul, and of the gloriousness of wildlife and wilderness. He revels in the beauties that surround him and comes to truly appreciate his experience alone for several months in the mountains.
My words cannot do justice to the lessons I watched him learn and to the maturing and self-discovery he experienced. I also cannot do honor to the beautiful way he describes nature, its wildlife, and the incredible beauty to be found in truly wild places. Thus, you should experience this book for yourself if you love these types of things.
"Indian Creek Chronicles".......2007-01-19
Refreshing and engaging first-person account of coming-of-age from a wise young man alone in the wilderness. I've found it personally inspiring as a, well, middle-aged woman, and continue to pass along copies to young people I know -- not because it's preachy or anything (it's not), but Fromm is the sort of buddy a mom would be happy to see her college kid bring home for a weekend: self-reliant, reflective, modest, polite, resourceful, and a good sport. Don't worry: It's a Man's Man's book (my manly husband likes it and recommends it, too). That Fromm happens to be a naturally good writer, too, is a plus. It's gotten awards, so you don't have to take my word on that.

I love the book. It has the best quotes from all the chronicals.
A good item for collecters.
A Great Travel Guide to Narnia.......2001-08-12
Chronicles of Narnia is a set of books that adults readers want to reflect on, to figure out what it all means. Lindskoog knows these books at many levels---the concrete and story-line connections across stories, how the connections were put there by the authors who did not write the books in chronological order, and the connections between story elements and philosophical and religious themes. All adult readers of the Chronicles should also read this book. Teachers who want to include any of the Narnian books in their classrooms will really benefit from the insights and the instructional aids provided by Lindskoog.
a deepened appreciation of Narnia.......2001-08-08
Kathryn Lindskoog is one heck of an author. I have greatly enjoyed reading her books. Journey into Narnia is no exception. In fact, I believe she brings the most passion to her work here.
The first half of this volume, "The Lion of Judah in Never-Never Land" is a masterpiece. It is like a theology of Lewis' Narnian tales. Lindskoog is not just another fan of Narnia, she is an insightful scholar. She demonstrates her deep knowledge of Lewis' other work while examining Lewis' views on Creation, Humanity, and God as expressed in the Narnian stories.
I must make mention here that one should read Lewis' books at least once all the way through before reading this book...a lot is given away (The conclusion is quoted within the first fifty pages). So don't spoil Narnia for yourself...read the books before you read this.
Part two is a book by book look at the stories. It has trivia questions, things to ponder, and benedictions based on each story (I love the one for The Magician's Nephew). The most startling thing I took away from part two is how much Lewis owed and made allusion to E. Nesbit's children's stories within the Narnian books.
The Chronicles of Narnia are some of my all-time favorite books. Mrs. Lindskoog has added to my appreciation of them. I recommend this book highly...may the Great Lion be with you.
Great book!.......2000-04-30
This book is fabulous! It explains all of the sybolic and religous meaning in the books and has a lot of interesting facts about Lewis and Narnia. It also includes the ages of the children in each book and has the recipies for the foods in the books, like Turkish Delight and alot of other stuff. This is a great book for anyone who has ever read the Chronicles. I highly reccomend it.

Great to thumb through for quick facts.......2003-09-06
What an awesome way to learn about the history of America! I love this book!
best bathroom reading I've found.......2002-09-03
this book is awesome. It gives you a picture into history by using photographs, timelines and newspaper articles.
Its like reading the newspaper throughout the century..........2000-08-02
History made easy and fun, thats what this book is all about. I hated history when I was in school because the textbooks were boring. Now this book is something completely different. For every month of each year since the beginning of the century it has the highlights of the important events that happened that time. It is like reading an article in the newspaper, giving you the feeling of the era and also providing great pictures. This chronicle is all about pictures. Its structure has a feeling of a magazine or a newspaper.
The whole idea is that you get all the important events of the 20th century in an enjoyable fashion. It covers all aspects of the history like scientific breakthroughs, artistic movements, wars, politics, from all around the world but with a particular emphasis in the US history ( I have also read the Greek version which gives more emphasis in Greek history).
The book is huge and it is more like an encyclopedia rather than a history book. I like to read it before I go to bed and I doubt that any reader will be able to go from cover to cover singlehandedly. It will really strenghten your skills in world history and because of the informal way of covering the events (more like a reporters point of view rather than a professor of history) you will be able to remember a lot after you have read the book. I enjoyed particularly the coverage of the WWII, it is breathtaking, its like reliving the whole thing. I can only imagine the poor people reading in the newspapers of the era the advancement of Hitlers troop across Europe and then the break of war and the losses and the great battles and..... I can go forever.
This book is also a great option for a gift. Believe me the people that you are going to give this book will really appreciate it and will rember you for a long time.
Facinating History.......2000-04-09
The use of actual newspaper articles in their original format showed the style of the day as well a presenting the news of the day. Photographs and even some contemporary ads are interesting. Reviewed by two teachers, one eleementary and one high school.
