5 out of 5 stars interesting, informative read.......2007-05-19

I couldn't put this book down. A friend lent me her copy, and I loved it so much I ordered my own before I was even finished reading it. I learned so much about health and beauty and the things around us that drag them down. I have gone on to some of the other books and topics mentioned in this one, and have significantly changed my lifestyle, due largely to the information from Kat's book. I recommend it to any woman who wants to take better care of herself, feel better, and look better. It won't just benefit you; it will benefit all those around you. A fun and easy read--it is definitely worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Good reference.......2007-05-16

Great book loaded with information on ways to get healthier and think healthier about the way we women look.Fabulous product suggestions. She never leaves you wondering how do i do that or where do i get this?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2007-05-14

Though the first part of the book is somewhat mundane it more than compensates for it in the resouces section. James not only lists the best products for one's diet, skin care, healing specific problems, and anything having to do with good health, but she also lists stores where they may be found complete with addresses. Her listings are impressive and invaluable. The resouces section alone is well worth the price of the book. For anyone who neither reads nor understands labels, this book is a "must have."

5 out of 5 stars A great book that shows health and beauty go hand in hand.......2007-02-02

Even before I read The Truth about Beauty, I already bought a lot of natural and organic products, shopped at health food stores, and used traditional Chinese medicine. But despite being generally attuned to the problems with chemicals, overly processed foods, pharmaceuticals, etc., I still had some blind spots, especially when it came to issues of "beauty." For example, with my skin I was still using the old "search and destroy" method. But this book opened my eyes, and I have had much more success since I gave that up and started following James' advice about fixing the skin from the inside out.

The book does a great job of connecting health with beauty and explains a lot of concepts that even a natural food consumer might not know a lot about. For example, I had always thought of low-carb diets as being a lot of baloney (so to speak), but the way James explains the glycemic index makes total sense. I especially like her idea of "upgrading" and the specific examples she offers, like drinking spritzers instead of soda.

The resource index is also really useful, although some of the products may seem expensive. If you shop at Wal-mart for all your food and toiletries, yes, you will pay more for natural products. But if you buy department store brands like Clinique, you will be able to find plenty within your budget. Also, I find that I use a lot fewer products in general now that I've started following the kind of simple regiment James prescribes.

All in all, I would recommend this excellent book to anyone who has beauty issues.

5 out of 5 stars A life-changing book!.......2007-01-11

I had the great fortune to meet Kat James and hear her speak at the Alive! Expo in Seattle in 11/06. She is as compelling a public speaker as she is an author. She tells her own story in the book, which makes it resonate just that much more strongly. This book, simply put, has changed my life. I followed almost all of Kat's recommendations, and have used the buying guide at the back to replace many of the personal care products I used for years without thinking of the chemicals contained in them. I'm eating organic foods and have lost 25 lbs. since I read this book three months ago. I bought it for several women friends for Christmas, and they're loving it, too. I cannot recommed the book highly enough. Read more at www.informedbeauty.com

5 out of 5 stars Incredible and sensitive INSIDE perspective on BPD.......2007-08-31

I have a graduate education in psychology and biochemistry. I also have a deep interest in comparitive religion and "meaning making." In other words, I follow a multi-dimensional approach to understanding any phenomenon and I think this is necessary to capture the full depth of reality. This sets the context for my review.

I was very impressed by Lost in the Mirror and I couldn't put it down. It is a well-organized, thorough, balanced and sensitive approach to BPD as it is experienced from the inside. I think this inside perspective is particularly valuable to BPD sufferers and those that are close to them. It can help engender understanding, compassion and support as it helps loved ones make sense of the contradictory behavior, stormy emotions and other symptoms that accompany this disorder.

In some of the reviews below, Dr. Moskovitz is criticized for being overly empathetic for the BPD victim rather than the people on the receiving end of rage or acting out. I have been on the receiving end myself and I must say that I don't agree with this characterization. However, I have personally struggled with my own anger, confusion and feelings of disorientation.

The way I have made sense out of the above situation in my best moments is by trying to understand the inside perspective as it is presented in this book. I recognize at a deep level that both the BPD person is hurting and that others in their life are also hurting. I didn't get from reading Dr. Moskovitz that the person with this disorder is not responsible or completely off the hook, nor did I get a sense that he is bashing them for their behavior. It seemed like a balanced perspective to me.

There are two books that I think are "must haves" on BPD. One of them is this volume and the other is Sometimes I Act Crazy: Living with Borderline Personality Disorder. There are also many other great books on this topic, but these two together seem to give the most concise, thorough and deep treatment.

I particularly liked the way this book developed the topic and used just enough case history type content to bring the concepts alive. I also appreciated the powerful metaphors and great examples. Without sacrificing content, the author made a lot of difficult to understand material accessible to anyone. This is no easy feat with a disorder like BPD.

While I do admire this book very much, I also think it is important to have another perspective. I have found that with a topic like BPD, there are likely to be blindspots in any account. Therefore, I feel it's crucial to look at this terrain from as many perspectives as possible. Even with my psychological background, I must admit it was and is very difficult to get my arms fully around this complex disorder that causes so much suffering.

I wrote this review late at night partly because I feel this could be such a helpful book to so many people. I wanted to share with everyone who is seeking answers that this a unique and important contribution on this topic. I hope you find it as helpful as I did.

5 out of 5 stars Lost ,Then Found.......2006-05-07

The beautiful writing style makes Lost in the Mirror rewarding reading. Learning of the probability of the woman I love being borderline BPD, I undertook learning as much as I could about the disorder.
LITM is the fifth book I've read in a series of excellent writings on the subject. It distinguishes itself through the genius of Dr. Moskovitz's presentation. I recommend it very highly. It is so well done I decided my dear lady friend would find it interesting with little chance of causing a disruption in our relationship.
It is working! She hasn't finished the book yet, but it surely has helped us discuss our "difficulties". As I expected, she believes I am the subject the doctor is referring to, but at least it has her seeing some "things" that have her realizing some of the symtoms describe her "inner" feelings.
I learned of her condition when I started therapy...and she will begin hers next week, with much thanks to this easy-to-understand, informative little book.

1 out of 5 stars Not recommended for those with BPD--.......2006-03-21

I bought several books on BPD after realizing that someone
close to me has symptoms that match those associated with BPD.
I would not give this book to a person who is Paranoid
and/or is a dangerous trouble maker; traits that the BPD
person shows to some degree.
These types are out to destroy anyone whom they feel has
done anything to them---whether trivial or imagined.
This book does not sympathize with the BPD's victims but
finds excuses as to why the BPD person has been programed
to act in a destructive way--because of abuse as a
child, etc.
I know of 4 people in this certain family who show signs of
this illness and I can testify to the fact that none of them
were abused, either sexually, physically, mentally or
emotionally.
All 4 have caused family breakups, spread vicious lies, blamed
others for the negative feelings that they have of themselves.
I TRULY BELIEVE THAT THESE PEOPLE ARE DANGEROUS.
They can be secretive, manipulative and devious.
I honestly do not believe that reading will help these people
other than TRYING to make them see that they need help.
And I have seen that therapy does little or nothing to help them.
The only positive results, that I have seen, are those who are
put on medication to change their moods, etc.
Something in the brain is not working.
To blame others for their problem only gives them the right to
continue their bad behavior.

For those who have taken offense to my review......

I am a most compassionate person who has much sympathy
for anyone who is hurting or has problems, whether physical,
mental or spiritual. You have read something into my review
that is not there.

My anger is not towards the two victims...i.e. ,the people
with the disorder and the people who have to live with them.
My anger is towards "THE(so called) EXPERTS" who place blame.
Blame on parents, events that never happened, or people who
had nothing to do with causing this disorder. Every book
I have read at least suggests that there is blame to be
placed.

I believe that this disorder is caused by something not
working right in a person's body. Whether it be hormones,
genetics, whatever, Because I have seen it in families,
I think that it is hereditary.

It does NO ONE ANY GOOD TO SUGGEST OR ADVISE EITHER VICTIM(S)
THAT SOMEONE ELSE CAUSED THEIR PROBLEM.
IT ONLY MAKES THEM WORSE.

Finding the cause or easing the symptoms with medications
are the only way , I believe, that this problem can be helped.

I have experienced, first hand, how Paranoia and BPD can cause a
multitude of problems and have come to the conclusion that
these illnesses are the cause of much of the heartache, break-ups,
family division, etc.
Many times over something trivial or non-existent.
I hope and pray that the cause of these life-shattering
illnesses is found ....SOON !

BELIEVE ME, I HAVE MUCH EXPERIENCE AND KNOW WHAT I AM TALKING
ABOUT. IT HASN'T BEEN AN EASY LIFE FOR ME

4 out of 5 stars Lost in the Mirror.......2006-03-02

This book takes a psychological and behavioral approach to understanding borderline personality disorder. Even if you have read "I Hate You, Don't Leave Me", you'll need to read this book to understand what the best treatment modalities available today. Of course, it was out of date the minute it was put on paper, as all books are, but it is the best that I have found to understand the causes and underlying compulsions that frustrate those who suffer from BPD.

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative .......2006-02-26

This book was very easy to read unlike other books that are so confusing. I found this book very helpful in understanding BPD. I think it's an excellent read if you are looking to understand BPD.

Book Description

Authentic personal style comes from understanding our bodies, recognizing the demands of our particular lifestyle, mining our experiences, and finding what we really like. —Randolph Duke

Randolph Duke’s The Look is a guide to personal style unlike any other. Duke knows high fashion—he has dressed Hollywood A-listers for the red carpet for years—but more important, he understands that putting together a truly fabulous look has everything to do with the woman who’s wearing it. Every woman already knows what she does and doesn’t like, so The Look wastes no time prescribing one-size-fits-all fashion solutions. Instead, it helps women make today’s sometimes-intimidating array of options work cleverly and beautifully for them.

It all starts with body type. Once you’ve identified your shape from five broad categories, you’ll learn to choose clothing that maximizes your positive features and downplays less desirable ones. Then, you can shop for flattering outfits that fit your lifestyle, whether you’re a fan of bohemian or preppy, urban chic or country living. The Look also teaches you to mine your own closet (and your friends’, too!) for pieces that can be refreshed or repurposed for a whole new look.

Great style is more about a state of mind than it is about a designer wardrobe or a fat bank account. Learning to respect your body and your own taste is a critical part of Duke’s philosophy. Exercises throughout the book help you identify what inspires you as you update your look and feel ever more gorgeous in your own skin. Stunning photographs of real, stylish women, from linear-figured supermodel Cheryl Tiegs to hourglassy fashion writer Merle Ginsberg, will encourage you to mix up and play with fashion to send your own message.

With expert tips on everything from making occasion-appropriate accessories choices and matching makeup to your ensemble to spicing up your outfit with personality pieces and stocking up on essentials for work, play, and evenings out, The Look gives you all the tools you need to let your personal style shine through.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful book.......2007-10-03

This book was very helpful. I now understand why certain apparel looks good on my body type and others don't. I cleaned out my closet and then went shopping armed with this information and feel, for the first time, that all my purchases were a good investment for me.

2 out of 5 stars very poor layout, too much text .......2007-03-09

For a book about fashion and dressing, this book was laid out poorly. Because there is an overload of text, it really needed to be better organized visually so that the user could quickly find sections of interest and grasp the main points. I feel like I'm being forced to read a text book. The editors should have looked at the InStyle 'how to dress' books and compare the difference.

I'm sure Duke knows a ton about fashion and have great information to share. It's too bad the communication of it is blocked.

Need more photos.

5 out of 5 stars unbelievable.......2007-02-23

This book answers so many questions...it is as if Randolph is alongside, advising you what to STOP wearing! the price of this book is nothing compared to the knowledge gained with Mr. Duke...Randolph, PLEASE do volumes 2, 3, 4....as we can never get enough insight into WHY certain things don''t mix well together. I'm amazed at what to stop buying that wasn't working and what to add to my wardrobe that will enhance it over the top.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a must have!.......2007-02-23

You can tell Randolph wrote this book himself ... it sounds just like him! It is a great little yet comprehensive guide to everything about personalized style. And what fun to read and go through the exercises ... I have only read the first 1/3 of the book and have a much better grasp on the whole concept of dressing my body. Plus, it''s hard to put down -- full of his humor and obvious desire to give women back to themselves. Great job, RD! Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-02-23

I've just finished reading this amazing book that i recieved only a week ago... It's so great to have all these concepts clarified...the basic principals are suggestions not commands... Each person can develop then her own authentic style and become the woman she always wanted to be. This book is down to earth and totally useful. THANKS! It was worth waiting for.

Book Description

Jasper Becker's book, The Chinese, was hailed as the best single-volume introduction to this enormous, inscrutable society. The Washington Post said, "He has been everywhere and asked every question," describing his conclusions as "right in both details and analysis." Since then, China's role in world affairs has only grown greater.

No nation on Earth is as newsworthy as 21st-century China—and no book could be timelier than Dragon Rising, appearing just as world attention begins to focus on the 2008 Beijing Olympics and China's all-out effort to present itself as a modern world power. As interest grows, Becker is the ideal guide to the profound changes that are already reshaping economic, diplomatic, and military strategies all over the globe.

Intertwining in-depth analysis with revealing anecdotal evidence, Becker addresses every major question. What form will China's government take? How will communism's legacy affect modernization? Can Shanghai's success with urban capitalism be replicated elsewhere? Will wholesale cultural and economic change be resisted by the millions facing sudden transition from an authoritarian state to a market-driven society? How will the new China cope with pollution, unemployment, and voracious demand for energy? Each chapter examines a specific region and such key local issues as poverty, minority unrest, and official corruption, then places them in the broader context of Chinese society as a whole.

Vividly illustrated with photographs that capture the paradox of an ancient culture remaking itself into a dynamic consumer society, Dragon Rising is a wonderfully written, well-rounded, wide-ranging portrait of China's problems and prospects.

This is a great book to read if you are planning to visit China, It is easy to read with beatiful pictures, a review about modern Chinese society, the good side and the dark side when the Dragon is rising.

5 out of 5 stars Examines the major issues around China's transition to a global power........2007-03-12

Dragon Rising: An Inside Look at China Today comes from a Beijing-based journalist who examines the major issues around China's transition to a global power. His experiences with a wide range of Chinese residents, from urban to rural - and his observations of the different paths the Chinese are choosing on the road to modernity - lends to a blend of powerful images and social observation key to any understanding of Chinese culture. Both general-interest libraries and high school to college-level holdings strong in intercultural understanding will want to consider this introductory review.

5 out of 5 stars Travelling to China soon? Read this book.......2007-01-03

My father will be traveling to China in May for a 3-week trip, to learn more about this fascinating country. I can think of no better book, to prepare him for his travel to Beijing, Shanghai, and the Yangtze River. So, I will be sending him this book immediately.

Following up his well-researched and detailed 600-page "The Chinese" with "Dragon Rising," Becker has given the "China" shelf in the bookstore a book, which it dearly needed. Instead of reading about the Ming Dynasty or Chairman Mao, business travelers and adventure travelers needed a book, which could be easily read in a day, covering the different regions of China (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, Yunnan Province, etc.), an explanation of Deng's reforms which were responsible for the China economic miracle, and some hard-hitting truth-telling about the human and environmental impact of China's rush to modernism.

On this point, anyone who has read Becker's "The Chinese" will not be surprised by his honest assessment of this human impact on the Chinese. In the chapter on Beijing, he recounts the developments that led to the Tiananmen Square protests; in the Shanghai chapter, he documents the misery of construction workers building this city of the future and the prostitutes who inhabit it; and in the Pearl River Delta, he puts a face to the cheap labor and goods being sent from China to the rest of the world: the young and petite factory girls recruited from the countryside who live their regulated lives in factory dormitories.

Becker's reportage combines a sense of wonderment and awe about China's rise with a Dickensian sensibility. Becker is terrific at distilling confusing political developments into a language the average reader can understand. But, he is at best when his journalistic instinct kicks in: traveling the country to interview farmers, entrepreneurs, beggars, prostitutes, local party leaders, labor activists, and prostitutes. In a way, the book is a series of fascinating anecdotes strung from one chapter to another.

Finally, I should mention that this is a National Geographic book, so the pictures are tremendously beautiful, even when they focus on the poverty or environmental disasters of the countryside. More of the China books would be much better, if they contained more contemporary pictures!

All in all, this is a well-rounded, very readable book.

5 out of 5 stars dragon rising- great overview of modern China.......2007-01-01

Dragon Rising is a very well written book giving the reader an excellent overview of modern China. Its clear from the very beginning (via the introduction) that the author is not a "China cheerleader" and can ask the difficult questions. I think this book balances all the China hype we see and read about it in the economic media with the reality of the the many pressing economic and social problems that are becoming more acute.

This book is very interesting and easy to read and intersperses anecdotes, with history, and facts, as well as colorful photos -all without getting bogged down in minutiae. Probably the best book available for anyone interested in an overview of modern China. I would recommend it for anyone doing business with China or traveling to China, and interested in an overview of modern Chinese society. Not for academic types or someone interested in Chinese history.

5 out of 5 stars An Incredibly Dynamic Nation!.......2006-11-09

China's future impact on world affairs, economies, and raw-material/energy demand is frequently pondered, but with little detail. Becker's "Dragon Rising" brings clear detail and reality to recent accomplishments by China. In addition, the reader also learns interesting tidbits such as China lost Taiwan to Japan in 1895, Tiananmen Square was modeled after Moscow's Red Square, and Deng Xiaoping was the de facto Chinese leader who led China out of Mao's mess and into the modern world (despite being deposed twice, and sentenced to death once for non-conformist actions).

Example of Chinese Urban Renovation: China spent $30 billion from '92 to '99 to rebuild Shanghai's infrastructure. This supported construction of 8,000 high-rises in 15 years (each taller than any building in the area prior to 1980), new steel and car plants, an automated stock exchange, a new airport, and a Maglev train to/from the airport (top speed 269 mph). The bad news is that Shanghai has sunk 8 feet since '21, its population density now exceeds 5,800/square mile (much greater than New York, London, or Paris), many of the new buildings are of poor quality and will require significant repairs in ten years, prices have skyrocketed to as high as $1,250/square foot, many of the buildings are vacant, and the disparity between rich and poor has never been greater.

China has also build underground cities and factories in preparation for nuclear war.

Transitioning the Economy: China had about 300,000 state-owned enterprises (SOEs) with jobs and food originally guaranteed for life; however, with their overheads (about one administrator for every three workers) they were slow-moving, and productivity was poor. Deng began transitioning by changing their focus from military products to civilian, and by the late 1990s, two-thirds were operating in the red.

Glove Company Example: The firm began as a part-time husband/wife activity aimed at adding to their farm income. Success led to adding onto their house, buying a few Japanese machines, and hiring some workers. More success and reinvestment brought new machines made in China (some with computers), and a capacity of a million/year. Large orders were shared with others in the area.

Sales activities took place not only via mobile phones, but at a local market (in this case about a mile long with five floors and 40,000 vendors) - buyers liked it because of the ease in filling a shipping container, even with small purchases from individual vendors. Dongyang focuses on socks (about 9 billion pair/year), and attracts 100,000 buyers at its sock fair.

MBAs are not needed - the average number of employees is 18, and 70% of owners have at best a middle-school education. Profits are reinvested, or put into real-estate or even purchasing jet planes; China has private savings of over $1.4 trillion. Employees work 10-12 hours/day, often for less than minimum wage (many workers are illegal migrants from rural areas - China severely restricts movement to avoid peasants overwhelming cities). The government is trying to crack down on pay violations; other problems include a damaged environment, high-cost healthcare that often is of poor quality, and lack of worker safety standards.

How does this all add up? A Mattel Barbie doll retails for $10 in the U.S., with $1 going for management and shippers in Hong Kong, 65 cents for raw materials, and 35 cents for other factory costs (including labor and equipment). Sophisticated parts are often made outside China and simply assembled; look for this to change soon.

Why do peasants want to move to the cities? Their income has stagnated at low levels (average land farmed is 1.5 acres; title to the land still resides with the government). Regardless, this creates considerable pressure for the government to further increase trade so that they can move off the farm and the land can be consolidated for production efficiencies.

Bottom Line: Becker does not hide the fact that China has a long way to go as far as human rights are concerned. However, it is also clear that the Chinese government is maneuvering carefully, trying to avoid unmeetable expectations and the problems caused by instant transition (eg. Russia, East Germany). Regardless, China's future military, political, economic, and resource impact on the world will be very significant and occur much faster than we probably would have imagined.

Book Description

Think you know Walt Disney World?

Do you know the backstory of Dinoland U.S.A. that unifies the entire land? Do you know how the former attraction named Dreamflight is commemorated in today's Magic Kingdom? Do you know how Ellen's Energy Adventure mentions the ride which preceded it? Do you know where the references to Horizons and World of Motion are? Do you know how Disney's Animal Kingdom pays tribute to the land it planned but never created? Do you know where the Hidden Kermit is located? Do you know how the four theme parks honor the years in which they opened?

You have probably heard a few "interesting facts" about Walt Disney World over the years. Perhaps you've heard that the windows on the second story of the buildings on Main Street honor individuals of note in WDW history? Or that the company plane Walt used to survey the eventual WDW property from the air now lives at the studios park? It's all true... but these are only two of the interesting facts pointed out in "101 Things You Never Knew About Walt Disney World." And those are only two of the best-known examples. Many of these stories deal with much more obscure, yet equally interesting, pieces of history of the theme parks. You haven't heard all these stories before!

4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-10-11

Great book for those who have never been to WDW and for those who have been before. There really were things I never knew.

1 out of 5 stars I want my money back.......2007-08-25

This was an unsatisfactory book. Beyond the lack of content, it was poorly edited with entire paragraphs being duplicated in various instances of the 101 'things'. There was little of value that I gained from the book. I bought this because our family will travel to disney for the first time next year and I can't say I have taken much away from it. This book seemed like the type of content that would be handed out on a promotional flyer which had a map of disney on it.

2 out of 5 stars :(.......2007-08-13

This book contained 101 things I already knew. This book would be great for someone who is going to visit the park for the first time. If you have been studying Disney trivia for awhile you will already know these things

4 out of 5 stars Really Nice Information for the World..........2007-01-10

This is a really good source of cool information for those who wn to add details and depth to their visit to Walt Disney World. Excellent resource for the novice or seasoned visitor.

3 out of 5 stars 101 Things You Never Knew About Walt Disney World: An Unauthorized Look.......2007-01-04

This is an entertaining book. Info. contained within is concise and often repeated in other similar titles. Layout is a bit unsophisticated, but if you are a fan of the Parks, it is worthwhile to read.

Book Description

Frustrated by the often unrealistic standards of beauty presented by today’s media, many women have become trapped in a never-ending pattern of chronic dieting. Daily they endure destructive self-talk such as “I can’t eat that or I’ll get fat” or “If I could just lose a few more pounds everything would be better.”

Chronic dieters may be any shape or size but they have one thing in common: They are often left to suffer alone with an undiagnosed “sub-clinical” eating disorder. Such sub-clinical disorders include eating habits that are unusual, even unhealthy, but do not fit the technical classifications of anorexia or bulimia.

Addressing the many dimension of “chronic dieting,” Life Inside the “Thin” Cage offers a wake-up call and practical steps to those who need healing. Readers will find personal stories, insights into their secret patterns and habits, reassurance that they are not alone, checklists, self-tests, and, best of all, a new road to emotional, physical, mental and spiritual freedom.

5 out of 5 stars DID I WRITE THIS??.......2006-08-24

I happened upon this book by 'chance' (in other words, the hand of God, in my opinion) and when I read the back, a tear trickled down my face.

Having been overweight much of my life and now being a chronic dieter, I could resonate with Constance's words - I think those thoughts she expressed. I don't fit the DSM-IV diagnoses for bulimia or anorexia. I'm 'different'. She is so right - there is a constant battle going on in my mind regarding weight, eating, and exercising. I am addicted to food AND exercising. It governs my every waking thought and even governs my day and how I spend my time. It's insane, I know. Finding balance is something I am working on. The sad thing? Losing weight DEFINITELY changed my life (I lost 70 lbs) and people DO treat you differently (I've never been treated better than I have in the the years since I lost weight). So, it's hard not to be addicted to dieting when the results are so positive. But are they healthy? That is something I am working out. Thank you, Constance, for speaking what I feel!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A real look at real life.......2003-05-03

Constance digs deep in her work...which affects nearly everyone at some point in their life (if we were to be honest). From the anorexic to the severely [overweight]...wishing our bodies were something else is the norm and our world can often revolve around it. This book is a great book of encouragement and sound advice from a clinical standpoint. I'd highly recommend it to anyone!

5 out of 5 stars The Key to the Cage.......2003-04-28

We can draw on the stories of others to find our way out. Constance manages to talk openly about her struggle with a sub clinical ED which allows the reader to find shelter and acceptance. Fellow sub ED journeymen will realize they are not alone and there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I believe her willingness to be vulnerable and create a public medium for sub clinical ED materialwill spur an increase in hope and help. The frustrating reality of our weight, our identity our ability to feel at "peace" with living is exhausting. When you read the pages of the "Thin" Cage a framework is given to your experience--you will recognize your behavior, your feelings, your habits, your rituals. And then you will realize you too want Balance. Constances' material will help you find the path to balance. Good reading!

5 out of 5 stars WOW...Guys Read this Too!.......2003-04-21

What a marvelous resource - while I am a male reader I needed to understand women my sons will date, women in our family trapped in this cage like my niece, my sister, my cousin. Powerful and honest. Thank YOU Constance for this excellent title.

5 out of 5 stars Words offer hope and healing.......2003-04-21

Although estimates vary across studies, eating disorders are disturbingly common. Even more common than Anorexia and Bulimia, however, are a spectrum of problems which fail to reach certain diagnostic thresholds called Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS). These disorders are rarely diagnosed and, consequently, are very infrequently treated. To the millions of people who suffer from so-called sub-clinical eating disorders, however, their impact is very significant.

In her work, Life Inside the "Thin" Cage, Constance Rhodes writes with transparency and disarming honesty about her own long struggle with EDNOS and bolsters her message with contemporary examples and insights derived from recent research. As a clinical psychologist, I find her tale to be familiar (and ultimately heartening) - the story of a driven, achievement-oriented, young woman on a quest for perfection who equates her value with the way she looks. Through a variety of events, she comes to the realization that she has a problem and ultimately succeeds in altering her orientation toward life (and toward food). In the process, she becomes increasingly balanced, healthy, and whole. She gently suggests that the transformation she has experienced is available to others and offers what I believe is a very helpful framework for a journey toward health. Importantly, she does not make unrealistic promises and (in contrast to many self-help books) does not offer a "quick-fix" but rather conveys the message that change is often a slow process, and a painful one at that.

I am an enthusiastic fan of Life Inside the "Thin" Cage and believe it raises awareness of a very significant problem while also offering words of hope and healing. It is a very important resource that deserves to be read widely and that can serve as a reliable guide for individuals interested in engaging in meaningful change and in finding freedom from unhealthy relationships both with food and with their own bodies.

This is a book I have lent to several people to introduce them to the complex world of dissociative identity disorder, (formerly called multiple personality disorder). Those who have read it have come to a sound, positive understanding of the disorder. Through its gentle treatment of the topic, the fears of others have been allayed and I have been able to show others my true selves. The book is an easy, fast read, written for the general public. I'm sad to find that the book is out-of-print; it has been a great resource!

He looked like Steve McGarrett. He dressed like Joe Mannix. But Jim Rockford acted like no detective we'd ever seen—and television audiences have loved him for over 30 years.

Fueled by innovative writing, unforgettable characters, and the star power of James Garner, The Rockford Files (NBC, 1974-1980) is one of the most popular, successful and endearing TV series ever made. Winner of five Emmys, including Best Actor (Garner) and Best Dramatic Series (1978), Rockford came back with a splash in 1994 as a series of movies on CBS. Reruns of the original Files have played continuously throughout the world since 1980, while the CBS movies have been a staple on cable since 2001.

Get the inside scoop on this landmark series in Thirty Years of The Rockford Files, featuring insight from series star James Garner; commentary from the show's principal writers, producers and actors; interesting factoids about the original NBC series and the CBS reunion movies; original artwork; rare, behind-the-scenes photographs; and much, much more.

This is a great book. If you are a Rockford Files fan, this book is a must buy. The author (Ed Robertson) has gone to great lengths to even include the phone messages at the begining of each and every episode.

3 out of 5 stars If you're Rockford File fan read it........2007-03-27

This is a good book, but like all genre of show books it's only average as far as interest and enjoyment. I loved the Rockford Files and still watch them when on one of the cable channels. I've seen some of the episodes at least 5-6 times. There are a few bummers among them (mostly the last two years), but 75% of them I enjoyed. After four years or so I think any writing staff is challenged to write fresh & creative material for a show and I don't think Rockford Files was an exception to the rule.

The books tells quite a bit about the actors & actoresses who played in the show. It also talks about the Pontiac Firebird that Jim drove. If your a James Garner/Rockford fan do read the book.

Reviewed by Cherie Fisher for Reader Views (2/07)

This edition of "Thirty Years of the Rockford Files" is an update from the original book that came out over ten years ago. I did not read the first release, but I can tell you from this edition that nothing is left out from the series. I was amazed at the thoroughness with which Ed Robertson covered this series and everything surrounding the series. It is a great guide for fans of the Rockford Files and would be a great addition to anyone buying the series on DVD.

The book is broken down by seasons and episodes with additional background information on the series, interviews with the actors, and tidbits of information that is not anywhere on the series. Many of you will remember that each episode begins with a message on Jim Rockford's answering machine like this one "This is Mrs. Owens with the Association for a Better Malibu. Thanks for your contributions. We've made great strides, but it would help, dear, if you could move your trailer!" Remember the famous trailer on the beach where he lived and the Firebird he drove?

I enjoyed the series in the 70's and the later Rockford File movies but had no idea that the character was created by Roy Huggins based on James Garner's enormously successful role as Brett Maverick years earlier. His specialty was "closed cases" and he embarrassed the police quite frequently throughout the series by solving these impossible cases. Rockford didn't care because he had been wrongfully accused of a crime and spent five years in jail before be exonerated. He was this business for the money and was described in the first chapter: "he did like money: he charged $200 a day, plus expenses, so he'd hang in there no matter what if he could smell a fat check down the road. "I won't kill for money, and I won't marry for it," he once said. "Other than that, I'm open to just about anything."

Many familiar faces guest starred on the Rockford Files over the years like Stephanie Powers, Lindsay Wagner, Ned Beatty and Tom Selleck just to name a few. Each chapter is full of facts surrounding guest appearances as well as linking them to James Garner's career. For example, Suzanne Somers guest starred on The Rockford Files in 1974, three years before she made it big on Three's Company with John Ritter. James Garner later joined the cast of 8 Simple Rules following John Ritter's untimely death in 2003.

So if you or someone you know is a Rockford Files fan, "Thirty Years of the Rockford Files" is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars Files on the Files - entertaining and informative .......2006-10-19

In Germany "The Rockford Files" is "Detektiv Rockford", and is still shown now and then on small private channels that (bless 'em) specialize in old American TV series and films. I got hooked on the series years ago by the catchy intro harmonica and swift LA photo montage, the stylish bronze Firebird, and of course the irony and whimsicality of the all-too fallible but ever-persistent Jim Rockford. The book is a supremely helpful companion to the series, with background, commentary and deft summaries of every episode made, including supporting cast. There is a nice chapter on the Firebirds in which our anti-hero tools through the streets and suburbs (and those wonderful hick towns out beyond the 'burbs) of Greater Los Angeles. Bar Columbo, James Garner's Rockford is the most entertaining of the TV detectives, and one of the most memorable (let's not forget somber Jack Webb in "Dragnet"). And this book is about the most entertaining I've yet read on a TV series.

5 out of 5 stars "This is Jim Rockford...".......2006-08-18

With the classic 1974-1980 NBC detective show "The Rockford Files" finally coming out on DVD, the time is right for a comprehensive series guide book such as Ed Robertson's "Thirty Years of The Rockford Files." As portrayed by veteran actor James Garner, hard-bitten (and hard-luck) private detective Jim Rockford virtually defined the genre for many years. The show was incredibly popular at the time, and has played continuously in reruns ever since--hence the "Thirty Years" in the title. Garnering five Emmy Awards, including a Best Actor for Garner and a Best Dramatic Series, "The Rockford Files" was one of the most successful and unforgettable television series ever made.

"Thirty Years of The Rockford Files" is packed with "insider" information about the show. It includes rare behind-the-scenes photographs, interviews with writers, producers, directors and actors, fascinating trivia, the story of "the world's most famous Firebird" and complete episode guides for all six seasons. The description of each episode typically spans a few pages, and includes a cast list, a transcript of the humorous telephone answering machine message that opens each show, a plot summary and a discussion of interesting features of the episode. The plot summaries are very brief, usually just a short paragraph. At first I thought they were too short, but after watching a few episodes and then reading the related summaries, I concluded that they are "just right." Interestingly, most of them don't reveal the resolution of the mystery--you'll have to watch the episode to find out how it ends. Mr. Robertson also briefly summarizes the eight post-series Rockford movies that aired on CBS, and includes a short section on the two "Rockford Files" novels by Edgar-Award-winning mystery writer Stuart Kaminsky that appeared in 1996 and 1998. Finally, he discusses four of the ten unproduced scripts from the sixth season, which ended after only 12 (instead of 22) episodes after James Garner became ill.

If you're buying "The Rockford Files" DVDs as they become available, you'll definitely want to pick up a copy of this book. Of all the television series and movie "companion" books, this is one of the best. Very highly recommended for all Rockford fans.

Book Description

You have probably heard a few "interesting facts" about Disneyland over the years. Perhaps you've heard that Walt Disney kept an apartment on Main Street? Or that there is a secret, members-only club in New Orleans Square? It's all true... but these are only two of the interesting facts pointed out in "101 Things You Never Knew About Disneyland." Many of the stories here deal with more obscure, yet equally interesting, histories of Disneyland. In fact, the majority of the material comes straight from interviews with the Imagineers who helped to build, maintain, and revitalize Disneyland. The book pays special attention to the inside jokes and hidden references to Disneyland's past, as these samples illustrate:

Do you know which play on words pays tribute to a former Mexican restaurant at a certain site?

Do you know how Tarzan's Treehouse honors its predecessor in two different ways?

Do you know what is so unusual about the decorations atop "It's a Small World"?

Do you know why one palm tree in Adventureland is special?

Do you know what the sign says at the bottom of Splash Mountain's big drop?

Do you know which pumpkin is an homage to a Disneyland official?

It's a certainty that you haven't heard all these stories before. Although there are 101 such highlighted stories, each comes with a fuller description and is followed by a second story that is thematically related, so this volume really offers 202 Things you haven't heard about Disneyland before. You will find these facts delightful and unforgettable once you've heard them!

2 out of 5 stars So-so book........2007-08-13

This really isn't as "unauthorized" as the title would lead you to believe. It's filled with everyday trivia. Nothing scandalous or shocking. Not interesting.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-08-01

I, being an avid Disney fan love to find out the little quirks about my favorite place on earth. However, these 101 things you never knew were 101 things even my child knew. Aside from the "101 things" listed are already in many Disney books, the book is poorly written. It reminds me of high school where when assigned an essay that had to 101 pages, every effort was used to double space, use the widest ruled paper available and write r e a l l y w i d e so you'd fill your assignment. To a Disney fan, very disappointing. To a fourth grader, rather insightful.

1 out of 5 stars disneyland book.......2007-07-15

I didnt think this book was worth the money. Alot of the things I knew about disneyland already and I have only had 3 trips there in my life.

4 out of 5 stars informative and fun.......2007-05-20

I read this to read on the plane for first trip to Disneyland and I am very glad hat I did. It was a fun insider guide to The Happiest Place on Earth. Although many of the things I DID in fact know, there where many I did not. There were also some stuff that I wasn't really interested in too. I had purchased the same guide for WDW several years back and am glad that I picked up this one too.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-04-10

I really wanted to like this book, and to find out more on the "back story" of Disneyland. Unfortunately, the book's promise of "little touches" was a little too accurate. (I did not buy the book only to find out that the number on a boat was based on someone's birthday.) This book would have made a nice magazine article, but the average person probably would have moved on to the next article before finishing. The writing style is not the problem, there is just not enough background to be interesting enough to justify $14.95 plus shipping.

Although HBS has changed quite a bit since Mr Reid attended, the story is still true to life, quite engaging and highly entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Deserves MUCH More Attention.......2002-08-06

After not only getting an MBA, but teaching in business schools for nearly twenty years, I recommend this book to anyone considering an MBA. When students complained about their MBA programs, I would urge them to read this book so they'd realize Harvard isn't perfect either.

Reid takes you through the day to day life of a first-year MBA student. In a microcosm like HBS, little things make the difference: "air time" in class, getting into the right study group, and more.

Reid also offers some perspective that may be missed by those unfamiliar with b-schools. Clients often ask career coaches (like me) about whether getting an MBA is a wise decision. Reid shows clearly that some people and some career destinations benefit more than others. He himself can maximize the degree's value: aged 26 when he entered (he turned 27 his first year), experience with a top consulting firm, personable and friendly.

Read between the lines if you can. MBAs are social. They network. Sure they have to crack the books but success ultimately depends on interpersonal skills -- fitting into section parties, ski weekends and Caribbean getaways. These folks are definitely bright and beautiful.

And don't miss his irritation with Harvard: outrageous residence costs, outdated materials in certain courses, uneven distribution of tenured "name" professors across sections, and more.
Yet in the end, Reid admits, the big "H" counts for a lot in the business world.

I wish we could learn what happened to him and his Harvard friends. Was it all worth it?

4 out of 5 stars A Nice experience in Harvard........2002-05-09

I think that anyone who wants to enter business school can read this book first. It not only gives you a portrait of what MBA life is but also how MBA students value their school.Totally speaking,MBA programs offered by USA are the best in the present world. To get an MBA degree is quite attractive to many overseas students, such as me.Maybe not everyone can enter Harvard, however,it's still a pleasure to know about what life in Harvard is and how Harvardians think and solve problems.

3 out of 5 stars IF YOU WANT TO READ A MORE THOROUGH BOOK ABOUT...........2001-07-03

the B-School experience, read "Snapshots from hell: The Making of an MBA". That was about the Stanford experience - but it painted a more vivid portrait of the characters/students, the classes, and the faculty. Also, it was more introspective, it engaged in some soul-searching as to the relevance/worth of an MBA. While this one does to some extent (the "lemming march"), it does give the impression that, for the author and most of his peers at HBS, life revolved around one final destination - high-powered high-paying jobs. Other than that, a fairly breezy read.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, with a few though provocing remarka.......1999-03-15

I definitely and strongly recomend this book to anyone considering going to HBS (and only to those!). The book is quite intelectually oriented (you will find little clies on who Bob really is, what kind of poetry, of literature he likes, who his friends are) but that is OK. The best remark in this book is his "lemmings theory" - the theory that too many of us just go with the crowd, without really knowing where we would like to go. Interesting!!
