Book Description

The market-leading text for the art history survey course, GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES has served as a comprehensive and thoughtfully crafted guide to the defining phases of the world's artistic tradition. With this book in hand, thousands of students have watched the story of art unfold in its full historical, social, religious, economic, and cultural context, and thus deepened their understanding of art, architecture, painting, and sculpture. By virtue of its comprehensive coverage, strong emphasis on context, and rich, accurate art reproductions, GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES has earned and sustained a reputation of excellence and authority. So much so, that in 2001, the Text and Academic Authors Association awarded both the McGuffey and the "Texty" Book Prizes to the Eleventh Edition of the text. It is the first art history book to win either award and the only title ever to win both prizes in one year. The Twelfth Edition maintains and exceeds the richness of the Gardner legacy with updated research and scholarship and an even more beautiful art program featuring more color images than any other art history book available. The Twelfth Edition features such enhancements as more color photographs, a stunning new design, and the most current research and scholarship. What's more, the expanded ancillary package that accompanies GARDNER'S ART THROUGH THE AGES, features a wealth of tools to enhance your students' experience in the course. With each new copy of the book, students receive a copy of the ArtStudy 2.0 CD-ROM--an interactive electronic study aid that fully integrates with the Twelfth Edition and includes hundreds of high-quality digital images, plus maps, quizzes, and more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book that covers art through the ages!.......2007-09-13

I purchased this book for a class; Ancient Art history. This book really is beautiful. Most of my textbooks I would resale once my class ended, but I definitely plan on keeping this one. The authors did a great job of giving high level overviews and thorough descriptions for each work; both in artistic form and historical context. I would highly recommend this book for both art enthusiasts and students.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent pictures but not quite reliable text.......2007-08-07

The main strength of this book are the pictures - most of them in colour and all of superb quality. To each picture corresponds a section in the text which describes the displayed work in a vivid and informative way, cultivating the reader's ability to look at art, understand and appreciate it. Another excellent feature are the "boxes", containing e.g. a description of an artistic technique or an excerpt from an original written source.

However, questions arise when it comes to more general parts of the text, e.g. chapter introductions aimed at conveying a broad picture of art and society of the epoque. Simplifications are expected, but they shouldn't be misleading - here are just some examples of the contrary: it's not correct to include Merovigians among the barbarian tribes (Goths, Franks, ...) that invaded the Roman empire! This is absent in the 11th edition but present in the 12th. Or, one cannot say that the Treaty of Westphalia granted religious freedom in Europe: that freedom mostly applied only to the local sovereigns, while their subjects were forced, sometimes quite brutally, to follow the religion of their boss. The Centre Pompidou in Paris is not quite a place of "popular entertainment", etc.

Conceptually, the book follows a certain point of view, emphasizing e.g. the question of gendre - the reader learns, for instance, that the communities in ancien Grece were dominated by "white males" ... The authors have also decided to include some works which are not generally accepted as art - but is an introductory textbook like this a good place to redefine the notion of art?

In summary, if you want in the first place to enjoy splendid pictures described in revealing yet understandable terms, go for this book. If you are looking for a more solid and reliable information, look somewhere else.

5 out of 5 stars Gardner's Art Through the Ages (with ArtStudy Student CD-ROM and InfoTrac ).......2007-06-29

Wonderful Art History textbook. Very comprehensive. CD-ROM quite useful. Used this text for Advanced Placement Art History course in high school for 2006-2007 school year. Liked the book so much I purchased one from Amazon in May. The copy I bought is bound upside down (the cover is upside down compared to the text inside).

4 out of 5 stars Solid Choice.......2007-06-08

Gardner's Art Through the ages covers a lot of material. The writing is clear though at times stilted. The images on the CD-ROM are beautiful and the link to the website with quizzes was even useful. However, my professor warned us repeatedly not to trust the information too much. As the text needs to cover a lot of ground there are sometimes errors and simplifications. That said, I enjoy the book immensely and find it suits the purposes of a survey text very well.

5 out of 5 stars Great Learning Tool!!.......2007-05-15

I bought this book for an art history class I was taking and planned to sell it after the class. But I was really impressed with the details and photos and the true 'learner friendly' quality. The CD is an amazing tool! I learned more from this book than all three of my art history classes combined. Great for Art Students and Art Lovers!

1 out of 5 stars Horrible.......2007-10-04

I am extremely disappointed in amazon and this book. You guys delivered it over a month late.I'm not paying for amazon prime so I can receive much needed books over a month late. I had to go to my College bookstore and pay $120. You wanna know the worst part? They don't accept devolutions. So I'm extremely disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Good.......2007-09-12

This book is very informative and it tries to explain so that there is not much confusion after looking it over.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful art.......2007-08-23

Loved this book for my Art class. I didn't think I would like the class, fell in love with art, and even kept the book afterwards instead of selling it.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2007-02-16

I would recommend this to anyone who wants to better themselves in the region of art history knowledge and the ability to evaluate art's content as well. It was well worth buying and compliments any classes orientated towards the subject...maybe would even overshadow the required text.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting pictures.......2006-12-07

I purchased this book for my Art History class. Very interesting pictures along with non-boring texts. I really like the accompanied CD as it has all pictures from this text as well as other version of Gardner's art history books. Pictures are crystal clear. Although I finished that class long ago in 2002 and sold the book for school's book store with attractive price, I still have a copy of that CD and often reviewed whenever I saw some interesting stories of art history (such as female goddess from Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code). All pictures are under flash cards section. Besides a good text book, it should be kept as a reference.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Art Histoy book.......2007-03-09

Although the text covers quite a bit, I can't help but feel a bit annoyed in its arbitrary, and sometimes misleading use of chronology. For instance, Heironymus Bosch is covered in the 15th century nothern art chapter, when it seems to me he should be covered in the 16th century northern art chapter, along with Pieter Breugel and Dürer.

Of course this might be somewhat arbitrary too, but I can't help but be annoyed.

Still, despite this one little problem I have with the text, it is very comprehensive. The works are very well reproduced, and in color too, which is delightful.
I know this isn't a helpful review, but I'll conclude saying despite some disagreements I have with the organization of the text, it is still an award winning text and well written. Unlike other textbooks I have, I have no problem reading the chapters without falling asleep. This is a big big plus.

5 out of 5 stars Gardner's Art Through the Ages, Volume II (Chapters 19-34).......2007-02-19

It came pretty quick and was in good condition.

4 out of 5 stars An earlier edition second hand .......2006-11-25

I'm currently working my way through the 8th Ed of this book which I picked up second hand. I'm finding it to be a very good read - the passage of art through the ages is woven together well with the various "ism's" explained well. I'd consider this book to form the foundation of an art book collection, using it as a springboard in to more advanced/theoretical tomes. I have no idea what the 12th Edition contains but I would question having to pay $100 for a copy. Find a earlier edition, second hand and then grab a newer copy to see what new "ism's" have been added. I cannot imagine that the body of the main text has changed much, the most recent edition probably has greater coverage of the "Post-Modernism" and whatever is currently in vogue.

2 out of 5 stars The Old-Soldier of Art History Texts never dies (unfortunately). . . ........2006-01-09

Gardners' has long been regarded as the rather stuffy "bible" of art history texts, mainly because of its commercial longevity (it's been around since the 1930s). Recent editions have suffered under recent editorship. The addition of tiresome "clever" subtitles, coupled with the creeping-in of a new shallower "touchy-feelie" approach to the exegesis of the artworks--no doubt intended to perk-up this withering old warhorse--are sad things to behold. Readers are well-advised to select instead the far superior ART HISTORY by MARILYN STOKSTAD. It is everything Gardners' used to be...and more.

4 out of 5 stars Brief Opinion.......2005-09-24

The newest edition of this book has some great qualities about it, namely the interactive cd to be utilized as a study aid (the flash card section was beneficial to me), the variety of objects chosen to represent the period/culture have improved, in my opinion, from the other editions as the book has updated archaeological finds. The only disappointing feature I found was in the text itself. The "extra" information boxes including explination of ancient religions and preservation techniques were facinating, but the bulk of text I found to dance around the point. It kept trying to be politically correct, such as changing Venus of Willendorf to Woman of Willendorf. Granted this new take is supposed to account for counter arguments against the purposes of certain objects, but I found that in the attempt to be objective there was a loss of passion for the object and culture itself. I also found that the terminology the book chose to define within the text was unneccessary (vocabulary such as hypostyle hall needs to be defined, not vocab such as carbon dating). However, overall the book holds to the tradition of the series by displaying stunning visual images (all objects are in colour no less!)and the information presented is rather informative, even if the style of writing is "too correct" in some places.

1 out of 5 stars book purchase-never received.......2005-09-20

I never received the order I placed which I had spent $74 on this book. There was no insurance for the lost book, therefore I was never refunded. Quite a disappointment.

The search subjects for this book bill it as "secondary" and "high school" language arts. After receiving the book, I can see that it is very much for elementary level teachers. All the pictures, examples, and suggested resources are elementary level.

The book does look like an excellent resource for elementary teachers.

Book Description

This introductory exploration of basic artistic concepts and terms applies them to a skeletal multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural history of artistic styles. It treats all the arts–painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, music, theatre, dance, film, architecture, literature–uniformly, and uses a common outline to reinforce the relationship of terms and concepts to the perceptual process. The book also ties both artistic media and history to the theme of art as a reflection of human reality This examination focuses on the media of the arts, pictures, sculpture, music, theatre, cinema, dance, architecture, literature, the styles of the arts, ancient approaches, artistic reflections in the pre-modern world, as well as artistic styles in the emerging modern world and, the beginnings of modernism, pluralism in a post-modern age. For art enthusiasts and others interested exploring how artists express themselves.

    5 out of 5 stars Required Reading.......2007-09-28

It's a good book with plenty of definitions and references. If you want to know about the History of Art and the Cultures that go along with it, I suggest this book.

Of course, I am a college student at an Art school and so I didn't have much of a choice as it is a required reading for one of my classes.

    Book Description

This classic work on critical thinking--now fully updated and revised--uses a novel approach to teach the basics of informal logic. On the assumption that "it takes one to know one," the authors have written the book from the point of view of someone who wishes to deceive, mislead, or manipulate others. Having mastered the art of deception, readers will then be able to detect the misuse or abuse of logic when they encounter it in others--whether in a heated political debate or while trying to evaluate the claims of a persuasive sales person.

Using a host of real-world examples, the authors show you how to win an argument, defend a case, recognize a fallacy, see through deception, persuade a skeptic, and turn defeat into victory. Not only do they discuss the fundamentals of logic (premises, conclusions, syllogisms, common fallacies, etc.), but they also consider important related issues often encountered in face-to-face debates, such as gaining a sympathetic audience, responding to audience reaction, using nonverbal devices, clearly presenting the facts, refutation, and driving home a concluding argument.

Whether you're preparing for law school or you just want to become more adept at making your points and analyzing others' arguments, The Art of Deception will give you the intellectual tools to become a more effective thinker and speaker. Helpful exercises and discussion questions are also included.

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible book,incredible review.......2005-06-08

Exactly as Dr. Schweinsberg said. This text was a magnificent accomplishment. Reading some of the reviews, I was dismayed. I of course believed that there was some sort of miscommunication, or perhaps that the readers knew nothing of the subject, or that they simply didn't know what they were getting when they purchased the book. Whatever the case, I would suggest to anybody to read Dr. Michel Schweinsberg's brilliant review. His comical yet serious review offers advice to the argumentation student in words I can't achieve. With a playful attitude, he has delivered valuable information in the same spirit with which one should "weild" the tools in the text; that is, as a serious weapon, but done mostly for enjoyment and clarity of thought. READ DR. SCHWEINSBERG'S REVIEW, AND FOLLOW HIS ADVICE!

    4 out of 5 stars Argue Well.......2005-05-25

If you have ever been told that your arguments lack facts, structure, or logic, then this book is for you. Learning the skills to challenge and defend anything and everything is an art indeed. Highly recommend it for partisan zealots.

2 out of 5 stars Good idea poor execution.......2004-07-14

The book mainly promotes the use of deception over reason. I know you're thinking, duh. But this is contrary to what the author says in the introduction. The deception is supposed to be used as a device to aid in learning informal logic, not as a tool to crush others. The author has a very aggressive and pretentious tone. Capaldi, the author, encourages people to be stubborn and uncompromising rather than problem solving. This book is classic sophism. I think the most valuable part of this book is the appendix. The practice problems are nice to look over. This book is effective at being uncompromising, but that is incompatible with being a good communicator. I should have borrowed this one. Since, I want my money back. -laughs- Also, the references to the "Great Books" by the author were interesting, but extraneous in my opinion.

4 out of 5 stars Good Weapon Against the Trogs.......2004-04-22

The techniques outlined in this book are good when you are arguing against yahoos and troglodytes. If taken to heart, this book can help you can vanquish almost everyone you encounter in day-to-day life. Do NOT use these techniques against more skillful opponents or against sincere, intelligent questioners seeking real answers to important questions. These are powerful debater's tricks, not tools for getting to the bottom of honest inquiries. Caveat emptor.

2 out of 5 stars Good Intentions, Faulty Execution.......2004-03-19

I appreciate what the author was trying to do: teach logic and rhetoric in a fun how-to-succeed format. I don't think it works very well, though. It's too disjointed to be helpful to the beginner and too familiar to be interesting to more advanced students.

For the beginner: To learn logic, start out with David Kelley's "The Art of Reasoning" and Irving Copi's "Introduction to Logic". To learn rhetoric and argumentation, try David Zarefsky's audiotape course on "Argumentation: The Study of Effective Reasoning" and his books on public speaking.

More advanced students will want to check out Chaim Perelman's books on rhetoric and Douglas N. Walton's studies of informal fallacies. An excellent but out-of-print book is William J. Brandt's "The Rhetoric of Argumentation" which gives detailed analyses of effective and ineffective rhetorical strategies in essay-writing.

1 out of 5 stars A shockingly poorly written book.......2007-08-19

This book is a great example of what value editors bring to books - this book reads as though it didn't have a competent editor. The breathless writing and ludicrous analogies would have been junked by a good editor. Where or where did Schewe get the brilliant idea to compare a system control center to a fuedal lord's realm?!!! Save your money.

4 out of 5 stars Shockingly easy to read.......2007-08-18

The review title is a small payback to the author for his several too-obvious clichés sprinkled through The Grid. That personal silliness being out of the way, the majority of this book is easy to navigate. Phillip Schewe tells a brief history of electric power, its personal giants, and its spread to today's world. Although the purist would likely want more detail on the above, this would make the work ponderous. As it is, the urbane writing style is enjoyable, and most readers will appreciate the author's mystery-writer technique of building expectation for each next chapter.

One will finish the book with an understanding not only of the huge reach and complexity of modern power networks, but also of the amount of micro-detail involved with running them. An individual power station, for example, has duties and problems spanning micrometers to miles, from microseconds to years. To boot, this power station must be mindful of its continuous niche in the rest of the power world, and that niche can change drastically in a blink.

True, the occasional worked-in cliché becomes annoying after a while (e.g., "The grid in Idaho lies mainly in the plain"). But on a little higher level of irritation is Schewe's undertone moralizing, especially since it tends to be of the Time Magazine if-this but-that kind of pontificating. Since one can get used to, and make mental discounts for these passages, the book is still very interesting. Through it all the author really does want to send the message for us to make the grid less troublesome, yet by all means keep it. Fair enough.

1 out of 5 stars Profoundly childish book on a fascinating topic.......2007-08-09

The author ruins what could have been a fascinating historical exercise with a mind-numbing stream of nonstop superlatives and unnecessary, cutesy metaphors. It gets impossible to chew through by about page 20. Extremely disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars Physicist and Playwright, yet.......2007-08-06

Just a sample of his writing:

Begin with 100 units of primary energy--coal, say. In generating electricity in a typical power plant, 66 units of energy go right up into the sky as waste heat. For automobiles the waste is even worse. It's as if, when you cooked a meal, you were to take two-thirds of the food and immediately dump it into the garbage.
Then, when we use the electricity, there is further waste, as when inside a lightbulb, heat is made along with light. To continue with the meal analogy, it's as if, after you served the food (the one-third that was left), each diner threw away 90 percent of that. Wouldn't that be appalling? You'd have to say there was something wrong with any food plan that operated this way. In other words, about 3 percent of the energy in the fuel gets turned into light.

3 out of 5 stars Either 5 stars or no stars depending on what you like.......2007-07-29

If you want to find out technical information about how the grid works or a thoughtful history don't bother with this book. But if you are looking for a science/history book to read at the beach, this is the one. Lots of geewiz stuff but no real detail. Nothing wrong with that. There is a place for a book that makes you feel awe and wonder and this book certainly does that but it left me feeling like I had skipped dinner's main course and went straight to desert.
