Not that bad.......2007-01-24
I am going to go against all of the reviews I read here on Amazon and on other sites and say I don't think the type is all that bad. Don't let that keep you from reading this book or you will miss some interesting reading.
Out to lunch publishers & editor?.......2005-12-13
HORRENDOUSLY UNINTELLIGIBLE FONT used throughout this book, as the previous reviewer mentioned. The FONT is extremely irritating to the eyes after reading just a few pages! WHAT were these publishers thinking? The book is read for INFORMATION and thus, that information should be accessible. As is, this is some editor's, or publisher's, wacky and misguided idea of a quaint, authentic, hand-written "look." The font reminds me of those awful, freebie, handwriting fonts you find on the web. A huge mistake. The information is interesting if you can get past the irritation of reading it. Worth more than this monstrosity of a presentation.
Difficult Reading.......2005-02-15
This is a book that could have been improved greatly with the use of a different font. Although there are many interesting facts in this book, the font chosen to present these ideas is very difficult to read and will perhaps discourage older readers.

Wide-Ranging Expertise.......2004-07-25
C. Keith Wilbur's expertise on the fascinating subject of the daily lives of the New England Indians is stunning. Anyone who has wondered how they withstood the harsh winters, how they sheltered and clothed themselves, and how they raised their families, will have his questions answered. The topics are endless: firemaking, snares, stone tools and weapons, needles and thread, canoes, language, ornamentation, their Iroquois adversaries, and the first contact with European settlers; it's all here. Where the archaeological and historic record is equivocal, the author makes educated guesses, such as the probable way stone tools were hafted to their shafts. One exception stands out, and that is his guess as to the earliest dates for Indian habitation in New England. For some reason Wilbur states this date as 32,000 years ago. In fact, there is no evidence that humans inhabited New England earlier than 15,000 years ago, following the end of the Wisconsin Ice Age. With this minor (and unnecessary) error, the book constitutes a rich compendium of factual detail about New England Indian life.
Good Introduction to the Early Indians of New England.......2004-02-12
This nicely illustrated book provides an excellent introduction to the history and culture of the early Indian inhabitants of the New England region. Stretching back to 30,000BC, the book opens with descriptions of the first inhabitants of North America, the Paleo Indians, and continues up through the Archaic and later Woodland cultures, finally concluding with the early years of contact between the eastern Algonquians and Europeans in the region that would become Massachusetts. This book is filled with well researched information and detailed illustrations and depictions of everything from spear and arrow points, to flintknapping techniques, clothing, cookware, and religious rites.
This book is perfect for someone with little or no previous knowledge of pre-historic Indian culture in North Americ, but can be a nice addition to a collection of someone already familiar with the subject and is well worth the price. It should lead the interested reader to even more in-depth works on the subject.

Disappointed.......2004-11-03
After the other raving reviews, I had a friend give it to me for my birthday, but was actually disappointed. I did finish because I felt obliged toward my friend. Summing up what I heard in over 2hrs: you are an artist before you have produced anything; you must be willing to enter the dark parts of your soul; art is toiling, dont give up and dont destroy. Estes' harped on powerlessly, obviously in love with her own voice but not considering the listener, making me fall asleep!
If you're creative, you need this tape set!.......2001-09-27
If you've ever felt "stuck" or as if people weren't really paying attention to you... if you're an artist and frustrated with your own work or how others perceive some of your work... if you've ever wanted to be an artist, but didn't feel "good enough"... You need this tape set. No, I don't mean you should hear it someday; I mean that you need to get this tape set right NOW. You need to hear it. (That should be in neon lights, flashing in front of your monitor.) Put "The Creative Fire" on your tape player and take out a box of tissues. If you listen to it in the car, be prepared when Dr. Estes starts reading from her poem, "How to Silence a Woman," because you may be ready to vent, big time, right then & there. She's telling you the truth you've needed to hear since forever. I repeat: if you've ever felt creative, or wanted to do something creative, and felt stuck or sad or not good enough, at ANY step in the creative process (including when you finished it), you need this tape set. It is the most significant message I've heard in the past year, at least. It is really, really, REALLY important.
The truth about creativity & imagination.......2000-04-07
This is one of two books/audio that I give or recommend to anyone struggling with their creativity (the other is Julia Cameron's 'The Artist's Way', the first book only). You can listen to these tapes on a regular basis and begin to remember what it all means -- why you want to create art, why it matters intensely, who is standing in your way, how to regain the spark, and how to live fully in your creative imagination.
All of Estes' audio tapes are fabulous -- she has the voice and the wisdom of the mother/friend/ therapist we all wish we had in our lives.
Excellent Tapes About the Creative Force Within........1999-03-13
I listen to these tapes over again every few months. I learn something new each time. Her stories renew my spirit. They teach me the way to guide myself creatively. I think anyone who ever wanted to create would be inspired. I would recommend these tapes to artists, musicians, authors, actors, poets, healers. Those who know the process gain insight into their own creative energy. Wounderful insperation for those whose creative energy is blocked and need guidence. In these tapes she gives us the tools to respect the process and keep the fire burning bright not for a day but a lifetime.

A good find for refurence on the contiental soldier .......2005-04-17
I purchased this book a long time ago when I went intellectually wandering through the American revolution. It does justice in describing the american soldier of the revolutionary war.
An excellant refurence on his cloths and equipment as well as his life in service. Much better thant the book produced by Osprey.
A good reference book to have and worth the price.......2003-08-17
I had originally purchased this book in hopes that it would be similiar to the OSPREY soldier series and provide a basic overview of the American Revolutionary Soldier so that I would have some familiarity with the terminology as I worked on other books about the subject. WHILE NOT AN OSPREY BOOK, it is really worth having in your collection.
The b&w drawings are great - they cover things from uniforms (even how to make a standard hunting shirt with pattern information) to buttons to weapons. It is a great book to have near by when you are reading through a detailed history that may make reference to a military item that you don't know. For the price a great investment.
Worth the price for an overview of the American Rev Soldier.......2003-08-17
I had hoped that this book would be like one of the OSPREY type on soldiers and uniforms. While it is not like that at all, it is still a good book with a lot of information in it. It is all artists black and white sketchs and those are really done well. The book covers uniforms, buttons, weapons, etc. It's a nice reference to have near by if you are trying to understand the everyday aspects of a soldier's life.
Same as: Picture Book of the Continental Soldier.......2001-06-08
If you think this is a new title, beware. It is a new title on an old text: Picture Book of the Continental Soldier (Stackpole Books, 1969). The contents are dated, i.e, the hunting shirt pattern bears no resemblance to the original at Newburgh, NY Washington's HQ, research shows the cooking gear was more like tin buckets than iron pots, the cartridge pouches became standardized during the war, enlisted mens tents are not as they are pictured, the Pickering musket tool was probably never made as none have ever been found, etc... For the 1960's this book was pretty good, but 30+ years of research contradicts much of what this book pictures as being typical Continental soldier equipment.
Delighted to find Dr. Wilbur's books in hardback!.......2000-05-28
I first checked this book out five years back at the locallibrary. All books in Dr. Wilbur's series on early American life areimmensely enjoyable and a work of art in themselves, with painstakingcaligraphy and illustrations. It is plain to see that the author has created a series of books that have informed and entertained generations of Americans, young and old alike. I picked my hardback copy up at the Monticello Visitor Center. I aim to collect every single volume. Dr. Wilbur's books are a must for those interested in living history. END

cutting.......2003-07-30
Read this one on a full stomach. This stuff is real. This is how medicine was back during the days of our founding fathers. Truly you must admire the men who went to war to make our nation beginning, for this is what they got if they did not die in battle but were wounded.
More shocking is if you choose to read the book by this same author of the medicine of the Civil war period, you will see how little actually changed between the two wars.
Grusome Details.......2001-01-20
Man, they say this book is for 9-12 year olds, the information in this book would turn a normal 9 year old into a puking ball (if they arn't already). I'm doing a report for my U.S. History class on medicines and practices of the American Revolution, and it turned my stomach (but tought me so much). Even if you don't like history I still think you need to get this book!

Historical account of American naval expertise.Free enterprize was engaged with the sanction of the distruction of all ships British.Great drawings.
Excellent Resource!.......2006-07-15
I recently picked up this book on a tour of the Tall Ship LYNX, a replica privateer or naval schooner. Printed in a font that is reminiscent of a hand-written document, the book reads like an authentic text. Filled with sketches that detail all aspects of the naval schooner - such as block and tackle, sail making, projectiles and "spare time" - it gives great insight into the lives of the privateers that is simple enough for even a landlubber to understand.

Great Colonial America Projects You Can Build Yourself
The colonial revolution at sea !.......1999-04-26
Graphic and Fact filled paperback is an excellent resource for sand-crabs and sea-dogs alike. Terrific historical references, accurate and well done sketches, and more provide a thorough review of the maritime side of the revolution here in the colonies. Everything from ship types, rigging, gear, weapons (personal and shipboard), maneuvering, signals, 'recruiting', berthing, and more are stuffed into this paperback. Want a recipe for hardtack? Need a pattern for that proper cover (hat)? Wonder what a sailor really did with all that hair at sea? My copy is well dogeared, as I'm reaching for it often when researching material for my theatrical or reenactment characters. For an expatriate Connecticut Yankee, this is also a trip through my own history!

The Woodwright's Shop meets Eric Sloan.......2001-04-16
You will not be able to put this book down! The incredible richness of the information and the quality of both the pen and ink drawings and the narative are outstanding.
This book really brings together the why and how of early American architecture: It tells the story of how the richness of wood resources in early America affected the development of tool technology which in turn contributed to the evolution of building techniques that were uniquely American.
If you like Eric Sloan, or historical woodworking in general, you are going to love C. Keith Wilbur.

Great Illustrated History of the Woodland Indian Culture.......2004-02-11
This is another of C. Keith Wilbur's illustrated history books, this one dealing with the Woodland Indian culture of North America. This book is filled with many wonderful illustrations and depictions of everything from spear and arrow points, to clothing, cookware, weapons, and religious rites. It follows the same general outline as his other book on the New England Indians, beginning with the appearance of the first Paleo Indians in North America about 30,000BC and chronicles the evolving cultures from the Archaic to later Woodland cutlures. Wilbur provides excellent introductions to the mysterious Adena and Hopewell people that dominated the Ohio Valley region over 2000 years ago, as well as the equally fascinating Mississippian Temple Mound culture that relected the grandeur and mystery of the Maya of Mexico.
This is an excellent book for someone with little or no prior knowledge of the early Woodland Indians and their culture, but is just as enjoyable for the initiated as well. It should lead the interested reader to more in-depth works on the subject

Excellent source of projects for school or scouting.......1999-10-22
I have used this book to instruct boy scouts in Native American and early New England craft with great success. The broad range of projects can easily provide you with a year's worth of activities that fit perfectly within the scouting program. The sketches and instuctions are easy to follow and the required materials are not expensive.
Deep insight into Native American material culture.......1997-08-15
This book describes many of the material goods made by Native Americans, and gives the reader an intimate understanding of their construction. Each item is described, with drawings of museum-piece examples. Wilbur then describes how Native Americans made the item (drawing from eye-witness memoirs where possible), and finally describes ways to make reproductions using modern techniques. Really gives one an appreciation for iron. Ideal for a youngster interested in Indians (and what youngster isn't?)
