Lennard Zinn explains that it doesn't take special skills to learn how to care for one's bike, only "a passion for spreading new grease on old parts." Clearly, his ambition is to share with newcomers the Zen-like joy of bike maintenance. But it's seasoned bike mechanics that should be tripping over each other for a copy of this comprehensive and ambitious manual. Zinn differs from other how-to books by guiding readers--with plain-speaking text--through almost every imaginable repair on almost every imaginable part. He covers everything from rebuilding hubs, to loosening seized stems, to installing six different types of bottom brackets. He even risks cycling blasphemy by walking mere mortals through the art of wheel building--an intimidating task that can take years to perfect. Although best suited for the old pros, his guide is user- friendly, funny, and essential to anyone willing to love their bike. --Ben Tiffany

Customer Reviews:
Not bad.......2007-10-18
Not a bad book.... good pictures and explanations. could be a little more specific for newbies. overall a good buy.
A great intro to mountain bike maintenance.......2007-10-09
What can I add that hasn't already been said earlier?
If you can get the book and the dvd. This has been a great introduction for myself as I wanted to learn how to best maintain my mountain bike. It has proven to be very accessible for even a beginner like myself and yet not feel like I'm being talked down to by the author.
I only recently bought this and already some of the maintenance & repairs I've done have saved some serious cash. Now as I walk into the local bicycle shop I know what I need for the tasks at hand.
For the maintenance and repairs I do now I save myself money and also I spare the time of the local bicycle mechanics by not taking it in for maintenance jobs I can now do. They have noted this and do appreciate it.
Clear, well writen and with good schemes and graphics.......2007-08-03
I found that this was exactly what I was looking for. Clear, simple when it can be simple and not oversimplified when the things are complicated. If you are like me a MTB enthusiast with inclinations to understand, maintain and even repair ocasionally your bike, this is the book for you. Not that it covers only basic material, but it is friendly to newcomers that will, I believe, enjoy putting their hands on the bike.
Search the internet, its cheaper.......2007-07-09
Good book, easy to read and understand.
Yet I still feel the internet is a much greater resource which the ability to search for specific problems, rather than browsing problems, and ability to talk with people (such as on forums).
Great if you want a book though.
great textbook.......2007-05-21
This is a nicely written and very informative book--a must for anyone who wants to do his/her own maintenence on a mountain bike. For long-time and experienced mechanics, much will be review, but there are always those little things that you haven't done before, or have changed with new equipment. This book gives you the proper approach in a clear, no-nonsense fashion.

Book Description
An updated edition of the classic reference on the dynamics of road and off-road vehicles
As we enter a new millennium, the vehicle industry faces greater challenges than ever before as it strives to meet the increasing demand for safer, environmentally friendlier, more energy efficient, and lower emissions products. Theory of Ground Vehicles, Third Edition gives aspiring and practicing engineers a fundamental understanding of the critical factors affecting the performance, handling, and ride essential to the development and design of ground vehicles that meet these requirements.
As in previous editions, this book focuses on applying engineering principles to the analysis of vehicle behavior. A large number of practical examples and problems are included throughout to help readers bridge the gap between theory and practice.
Covering a wide range of topics concerning the dynamics of road and off-road vehicles, this Third Edition is filled with up-to-date information, including:
The Magic Formula for characterizing pneumatic tire behavior from test data for vehicle handling simulations
Computer-aided methods for performance and design evaluation of off-road vehicles, based on the author's own research
Updated data on road vehicle transmissions and operating fuel economy
Fundamentals of road vehicle stability control
Optimization of the performance of four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles and experimental substantiation, based on the author's own investigations
A new theory on skid-steering of tracked vehicles, developed by the author.
Customer Reviews:
useful book.......2007-04-11
I recommend every automotive engineer to use this book, It's a good reference.
Handles both road vehicles and tracked vehicles.......2005-07-24
The book covers dynamics of ground vehicles over hard surfaces and unprepared terrain - mechanics of vehicle-terrain interactions, terramechanics. Tracked vehicles such as a military tank or a bulldozer that is propelled by tracks instead of pneumatic tires are also covered in detail in this book. There is also attention to air-cushion vehicles (hovercrafts). However, the guided ground vehicles which are constrained to move along a fixed path, such as railway vehicles and tracked levitated vehicles are not covered in this book.
There is a very good chapter on the mechanics of pneumatic tires, which has both theoretical and practical information. Attention is also given to performance of tires on wet surfaces. This issue is frequently overlooked by the other vehicle dynamics books; however, the behavior of tires on wet surfaces is of considerable interest from a safety point of view, as many accidents occur on slippery roads. The tire is also analyzed as both spring and a damper. There are useful graphs and tables in this chapter, as well as throughout the whole book. The table of damping coefficient of tires shows that the damping coefficient of tire drops with increase of the inflation pressure.
Mechanics of vehicle-terrain interactions studies distribution of stresses in the terrain under vehicular loads, empirical methods for predicting off-road vehicle performance, a computer-aided method for evaluating the performance of vehicles with flexible tracks, and so on.
Performance characteristics are covered separately for road and off-road vehicles. For the road vehicles, the author analyzes equation of motion and maximum tractive effort, aerodynamic forces and moments, vehicle power plant and transmission characteristics, prediction of vehicle performance, operating fuel economy, engine and transmission matching and braking performance. For off-road vehicles, the author examines drawbar performance, fuel economy of cross-country operations, transport productivity and efficiency, mobility map and mobility profile, selection of vehicle configurations for off-road operations.
Handling characteristics of road vehicles and steering of tracked vehicles are also separately analyzed.
There is a very good chapter on vehicle ride characteristics and human response to vibration.
I also recommend "Race Car Vehicle Dynamics" by William F. Milliken and Douglas L. Milliken, which is also a good compromise between theoretical and practical information.
Excellent & Comprehensive.......2001-07-25
It covers various types of ground vehicles and the authors has done a tremendus job to produce such a good book especially on engineering point of view. Well and easy understanding for Engineers with lots of mathematically formulaes and explainations.
It worth to read over and over again.
A book for reference if involving ground vehicle dynamic computations.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Guide - Worth buying.......2007-08-08
I have found this title to be very interesting, and very informative at the same time. It provides a great deal of background information and historical facts for each of the trails it details. The book also provides some historical and other information on the state of Utah, including info on the types of wildlife and plantlife that can be found in the different climate of Utah.
It includes many trails, all over the state. As the title suggests, mosts of the trails are ones that give you an alternate route, or backcountry route, to or through a city/town. The only reason that I didn't give it five stars is that I would like to see some more maps of the smaller, shorter off road trails in Utah.
Overall, this is an excellent resource to have, and I have found it very enjoyable. There are great trails and wonderful details in the book. I would say it is worth the buy.
Great resource for finding that perfect road.......2007-05-13
We have used this throughout central and southwest Utah. It's great for finding that little known unimproved road you've heard about, or planning your trip, and most importantly for knowing just what you are getting into when you go through that cattle gate that leads away from the beaten bath. The trail ratings are accurate, the instructions clear, it lets you know whether there is a way back out, or if you need to be looking for a turnaround, and unlike the dude at the gas station, doesn't forget that you might need 18 inch clearance or a winch on this one. I recommend it highly, it can make the difference between an exciting adventure and a frightening ordeal
New to offroading, get this book.......2003-08-24
This book is outstanding. It has been well used. It gives very detailed information for trails in Arizona. Almost impossible to get lost. It includes GPS waypoints for all trails. Definitely recommend!
Book Description
Ready to turn your Jeep Cherokee XJ into a trail-worthy machine? Why not? With two available 4-wheel-drive systems, solid axles front and rear, and a torquey 4.0-liter straight 6, the Cherokee is a very capable machine, especially when it's modified the right way. This book isn't about cutting apart your Cherokee to build an over-the-top, off-road-only rock crawler (though you can take it there), and it isn't about building a jacked-up, chrome-covered show rig either. This book is about building a useful, capable Cherokee for mountains, the mud, the desert, the street, and everywhere in between. With the modifications explained on these pages, your Cherokee can take you and yours just about everywhere you want to go - and get you back safely. Author Eric Zappe explains how to upgrade your Cherokee's suspension, axles, differentials, engine, transfer case, wheels and tires, skid plates, and more, using aftermarket and salvage yard upgrades. Zappe even has special sections covering basic driving and recovery techniques, and a number of built-up Jeeps to give you ideas for your own Cherokee. Also included is a detailed account of a group of XJs making a run through the famous Rubicon trail.
Customer Reviews:

Must have for all Jeep Cherokee(XJ) Owner who want to build up his/her rig.
Price is cheap for the amount of informations and photographs that are included in this easy to read layout.
a must have for an xj enthusiast.......2007-08-07
easy and pleasant to read. covers all basic modifications and improvements for off road use . gives a lot of information for the changes of the model through the years so very help full for someone who intents to buy an xj to know what to look for , but also for the owner to know the weak and the strong points of his jeep. you will read it more than once. inspirational and motivating.
Good buy.......2007-07-14
If you are looking for a book that tells you how to do things, then you will have to keep looking. This book is about the why's and what upgrades you'll want or need as it relates to off-roading.
That was exactly what I was looking for when I ordered the book. Advice about engine choices, suspension lifts, and is my current axle enough for what I want to do. All of the questions I had about building my XJ were answered. Eric has even answered the questions I didn't realized I should have asked. (Such as, Do I want to upgrade to disk brakes? uh.. yes)
Hubby loves it.......2007-07-09
My husband loves this guide! It has belped him get his jucky eye sore of a Jeep to actually to move. :-)
Enjoyable read........2007-03-25
This is grate book for beginners. Give a cross explanation for all XJ upgrades.
a good book to have.
I enjoy reading it.

Customer Reviews:
Very funny.......2007-09-25
I really enjoyed the book. Great writing style, very engaging and humorous, yet usefully informative.
Lots of pitfalls here.......2007-06-12
This is written by a colorful guy, who seems to have a lot of experience. It makes a good entertaining read, but the reality is that it comes up short with technical info. Probably the best part of the book is that there are good, if not excessive, equipment lists provided. These lists make me wonder how I ever got home with the junk I used to bring (some pliers, a flashlight, a can of beanieweenies...). The down sides, though, are numerous: There's a lot of ink wasted in the telling of stories where the lessons are fairly obvious. Much of the recommendations are based on personal experience, rather than actual data. The author's experience is restricted to Southern California and Mexico (hot, dry, sandy stuff). Other environments/terrain are glossed over so badly that they're useless (his treatment of snow, for example). The most dissapointing thing is that in an effort to cut down on the length, they decided to create "Volume II" which was never published. It leaves the reader feeling ripped off, because the more difficult and technical topics were moved there (e.g. winching). The book is entertaining to read, and I did learn a few things, but overall it's very basic. It's written for folks who bought an SUV, but have never been anywhere an ambitious driver couldn't go in a honda civic. If you don't understand what kind of differential your car has, this book's for you. If you think a winch might be in your future, then move along.
Volume 2 should be good.......2007-06-08
If volume 2 ever comes out it will more than likely be a good book. Volume 1 comes up short. Volume 1 is 2 wheel drive.
Good info BUY the book please so we can have Vol 2!.......2006-10-18
I was sad to hear there is no vol 2. I wanted to get it for the bit about tires and other advice. Oh well. While I wish this was a more complete book, I can understand not going to the work for vol 2 if this didn't sell better. All I can say is if Vol 2 is ever published, I will be in line.
Love the cartoons and the humor, esp APF. (Buy the book to learn more about APF)
An Easy Reader.......2005-11-22
This book is very easy to read cover-to-cover. It is entertaining, and easy to understand. A couple of things got annoying. There are 4-5 pages of "How to pack a cooler" which will leave you wondering "why did i just read that?" and many many references about "Volume 2". Much of the information that i wanted from this book is apparently going to be published in volume 2. I will buy that one when it comes out.

Customer Reviews:
Detailed Suspension Handbook.......2005-08-06
This review doesn't offer to much insight on basic lifts, or give a summary of advantages between a body lift or suspension lift. But, if your vehicle is one of the many featured in this book, I highly recomend purchasing this book. The author shows many how-to photos of the processes being done by professionals and gives many helpful hints so nothinig goes to wrong in the process of upgrading your suspension.
Don't Waste Your Money!!!.......2004-08-05
Very little tech info. The title is misleading. The book covers some basic stuff like types of suspension, but lacks any real substinance. It covers mostly the installation of after market suspensions and not "how to build rugged off-road suspensions." Almost all of the chapters are taken directly out of the magazine. Save your money and skip this book.
Very small amount of tech here........2003-09-07
Thw whole book is just collection of articles taken from previous magazines. Many disgraceful ad plugs. Very little tech. A very disappointing book.

Off Road.......2005-12-10
WOW!! A laugh a minute! It was the best comic I have read in a LONG time...great story, great artwork, and VERY funny. It is an astonishing adventure and I really connected with the Greg character. The extra comic strip in the back of the book is a funny bonus. I would recommend this book to anybody that had a sense of humor.

Customer Reviews:
Not enough.......2005-09-24
I found the information somewhat outdated most explanations in the book are better done elsewhere. The book deals with offroad recovery situations most fourwhelers will never experience. I suggest going to a basic offroad "live" class and forget this book.
Recovery.......2005-09-21
The book was a little disappointing. It covered the topic and had some very detailed number crunching charts. But for the money Four-Wheeler's Bible is just as good on recovery and has many other topics for the same price.
Author's comments.......2002-01-23
I was interested to see a number of comments. I realise that it may be complicated and strove not to make it dependant on maths. What prompted me to put the book together was a collection of briefing and lecture notes that I had created while running my small company and giving instruction. I was acutely conscious of some glaring health and safety failings on the part of many people undertaking off-road (ie emergency) style recoveries. In the main it is not intended to be a collection of 'if you are stuck like this photos' and this again was a conscious decision because of the enormously wide variety of situations that could occur. In any case the understanding behind such a picture would still be necessary otherwise the learning point would be reduced.
My main target was to give people a feel and understanding of what may be involved in any situation and loads on winches and materials, what the ground could support, and so on is fairly crucial. This also involves bridging in which the scope for fatal disaster is extremely high.
The tables at the end are sufficent to enable someone to work out almost anything without a calculator, so long as paper and a pencil available. Not that I necessarily would do that but in the middle of nowhere with a vehicle up to its axles in mud or across a ravine making sure that nothing too hazardous is attempted should be common sense.
I was guided by the publishers to a certain extent who felt that it didn't need significant re-presentation. I had also produced a laminated quick reference card but this wasn't practically publishable. This is still available by special request.
I am pleased that most people have gained something constructive and hope that at least a few dangerous situations have been avoided.
Disappointing.......2001-01-11
I expected more practical tips for getting out of odd situations. I finished the book thinking I should add an engineering calculator to my toolbox--and not feeling like I got many useful ideas. A careful read would provide practical information, I'm sure, but my eyes glazed over at all the math and physics, before I got much benefit.
Cole gives good safety information, and recommends a very comprehensive toolkit (weighing in at almost 200 lbs. excluding winch). His gadgets and tricks are well suited to four-wheeling in his native, deforested England, where it's hard to find a tree to winch to.
It's good to understand a few principles behind winching, but a little algebra goes a long way. (Did you know that two pickets driven 1 meter into undisturbed earth, spaced 1 to 2 meters apart, inclined away from the load at 15 degress, should hold a pull of 1810 kilograms? Do you care? See page 15.)
I'd rather see a cookbook approach with photos: "Is your vehicle stuck like this? Then do this!" If it were written by an instructor at one of the 4x4 camps, I think it would be successful.
