Book Description
An Environmentally Sound Approach to a Lost Art
Our once-pristine wildlands are threatened by ever increasing problems of pollution. Since its first publication in 1989, How to Shit in the Woods has been adopted by outdoor enthusiasts everywhere as part of the solution. In this updated edition, outdoorswoman Kathleen Meyer reviews the newly available portable potties, with special attention to individual trekkers in an all-new chapter, "Plight of the Solo Poop Packer." Other topics include: the growing array of travelers' field water-disinfecting systems, Giardia contamination and the now infamous critter Cryptosporidium, crotch-accessible clothing for women, and a fresh batch of "worst experience" stories, all peppered with irreverent musings. For the purist, there are more wise t.p.-less techniques from the Old World. Written with an effervescent sense of humor, this is a book for anyone who wants to enjoy the outdoors responsibly.
Customer Reviews:
Required reading if you have to "go" outdoors!.......2007-05-14
To the uninitiated, the art of having a dump in the woods probably seems no more complicated than "squat, squint, squeeze and squeegee"! But, alas, as the world shrinks and the use of the world's limited wilderness terrain by outdoor adventurers increases to the limit of the land's ability to withstand the stress of that use, it's just not that simple. When considerations such as ecology, weather, temperature, privacy, courtesy, hygiene, biodegradation, density of camping use in an area, terrain and so on are factored into the decision as to where and how to complete the necessary feat, all is not as simple as it would seem. The methods one should choose are as varied as the terrains one might choose to visit and the times of year in which those choices are made.
"How to Shit in the Woods" is a book that should be read by EVERY person who would choose to venture into the out of doors - whether you want to spend a weekend at the local campground or you're a hardcore toughened backwoodsman heading out into the bush for a week long solo canoe trip in Canada's northern boreal forest!
Be prepared for lots of silly toilet humour, hilarious anecdotes concerning toilet misadventures, lots of tongue-in-cheek jokes, a good number of belly laughs and a very earthy delivery to be sure - but the message ultimately is entirely serious and well worth the read! There is very little humorous when it concerns encountering the leavings of someone who trod the trail in front of you.
Highly recommended for campers of all stripes, sexes, ages and experience levels.
It's a body function get over it!.......2007-03-19
A well written book about a subject that people normally don't think about till they are out in the middle of nowhere and it's too late to find a restroom that is miles away. The title may be offensive to some but, the books provides excellent information
Yawn - don't bother.......2007-01-24
This is a serious subject, and I hoped the book would contain some good info and be a useful and light-hearted read for the inexperienced campers I often escort into the country. Sadly, the useful info in this book would barely fill a magazine article - which is where it should have been. The bulk of it is a painfully inept attempt at humour, over-complicated and pompous storytelling and self-apology. There is simply too much tedious waffle diluting the interesting stuff to make the book useful to anyone as a quick reference, and it simply isn't funny enough to warrant it's size (which, given its smallness, is saying something). At best it is mildly amusing in parts - and at worst it is a painfully protracted waste of paper. Perhaps it is intended to be used for wiping yourself after practising some of the poorly described techniques within?
A Masterpiece of English Literature.......2005-12-07
Ok, it's not a masterpiece of English literature. What is there to analyze here? This is like arguing the merits of Benny Hill. For 8 bucks, buy this book. It has a few practical tips about where and how to deficate in the woods (hence the title). Great. The introduction is a tears-in-your-eyes funny anecdote on that topic that is probably worth the price. Then, you have a conversation piece for your bookshelf that will be appreciated by almost everyone. And, the author goes to some length to argue that this title is NOT vulgar (the book includes a useful lexicon for the word that is also worth the price). And, you'll have something to think about the next time you take a hurried necessary behind a tree or abandon a diaper in the Wal-Mart parking lot! Enough analysis already.
Finally ... a great help for the novice woodsman.......2004-12-13
Few experiences do more to mar the outdoorsy afternoon or the 8 day backpack trek than stepping over a log and discovering your expensive waffle-stompers are filled with the leavings of another hiker. The problem is as old as mankind. At least, it's as old as mankind after he began noticing what was between his toes.
The Bible addressed the problem, probably in the first surviving form, by demanding that people walk away from others with a spear or spade, dig a hole, and cover it. That method works well where the traffic is light. It works less well on heavily traveled forest trails.
Meyer offers 102 pages of suggestions, anecdotes and solutions for novices who want to experience the woods, don't want to create a problem, recognize it's a necessary body function and must be addressed.
I'd recommend it for everyone who plans a trip into the outdoors and isn't already familiar with how to deal with the function in a way that's not objectionable to those who follow. I'd make it required reading for those who go to the areas I'm likely to visit.

Customer Reviews:
Selling Corporate Aviation!!!.......2006-02-25
I read the first half of the book and during the entire course of the book, all the author does is "See Corporate Aviation". I would not recommend this book to anyone seriously wanting to get insights into the working and economics of corporate aviation. I guess the author wrote the book to popularise corporate aviaiton.
NBAA Guide Expansion.......2005-10-15
There are a very few books covering the Corporate Aviation Management topic.I had been waiting for some corporate aviation material for a while, because the existent texts were not updated with the new facts and changes of the business aviation since the 9/11 events.
I think the author has done a great and serious job putting this information all together.I purchased the book with very high expectations and I must say that I was not disappointed. The contents are well organized and elaborated.
The book is written from a realistic perspective with many references to official sources (FAA, NBAA, etc) and other text books.Although not in deep detail, the book covers all the aspects of a corporate flight department, from planning to operation to maintenance to legal issues, making it, I believe, an excellent guide for starters or experienced professionals.
I like the book format except for its size and fonts. For this type of book I'd prefer a "letter" size with bigger fonts.
For each important matter there are side bars inserted with checklists, which I think are great.
As the author states, this book is a reference guide and should be considered supplementary reading because not all the basics are covered.
Excellent Reference.......2005-09-08
This book was the best reference I had while preparing for the NBAA Certified Aviation Manager's exam in 2004.
It is also a very useful read for the business executive who must deal with an aviation department but has little experience in that particular field.
Outstanding Resource.......2005-09-03
I had recently moved into the position of Aviation Manager/Chief Pilot of a mid-size, midwestern corporate flight department when I purchased this book. I was looking for a one stop shop to cover the basics of corporate aviation and a resource for studying for the NBAA's Certified Aviation Manager (CAM) Exam.
Though I had a solid foundation as a corporate pilot for 15 years, I was very impressed at the content of this book. This book covered very well the administration and operations side of a flight department as well as the technical and facilities side. Also included were great chapters on personnel and leadership components of managing a flight department. Though I did study other sources as well, I credit Business and Corporate Aviation and Management by John J. Sheehan as the primary reason I passed the CAM exam on the first try.
This book brings many resources together. As I went through this book, I developed a checklist of things I needed to get working on in my department.
Business and Corporate Aviation and Management was surprisingly easy and enjoyable reading, though a little larger print would have been appreciated.
All in all, this is an outstanding resource for anyone in corporate or business aviation including charter. And if you aspire to manage a flight department or take the CAM Exam, it's a must read and a must keep on your shelf.
Selling It Now.......2005-06-11
I am in management for a major airline, among the most profitable in the world and consistently rated the best. Opened this book, browsed through and decided to sell it. It certainly covers a lot of ground in terms of opening your eyes to managing in aviation, but alas, only for non-aviation experienced personnel. There is mostly only mentions of what is there to run but nothing on how to run something. A long list of LISTS practically on what you need to run and then nothing that puts them together. Readability is not too pretty either. Dry style and lack of visuals will surely make this look like your college engineering textbooks, the ones you dreaded reading.

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive Textbook.......2007-03-25
This book provides a comprehensive coverage of the technical and economic aspects of various facets of air transportation including commercial airlines, charter operations, corporate services and other related businesses such as leasing company operations and fractional ownership. The reader gains insights into the areas where costs can be saved and revenues enhanced. For example, the author presents various strategies to minimize fuel usage and hence improve the bottom line.
The book is well written allowing it to be accessible to people working in various specialties in the air transportation business that have opportunities to learn about economic air transport operations. Among the subjects covered include aircraft maintenance economics, various aircraft financing options enabling managers to evaluate those most beneficial for their business and revenue enhancement strategies. The reader will be pleased to learn that environmental issues are not forgotten.
Overall, a useful and helpful book for managers in the air transportation industry who need to learn how to minimize costs, improve revenue and thus enhance profits.
Too much, too little, need more -- focus.......2003-12-13
The title is misleading. I searched through every chapter to decipher how to make a profit with passenger, cargo, and/or other areas of air transportation. It covers a tremendous amount of information like aircraft configurations and technical designs. Unfortunately, and all so common, lots of problems given about aviation; but few solutions offered about profit strategies!
Each chapter technically covers an area of air transportation, but even the short chapters are not extensive enough. Only the most fundamental elements are written. There is not enough pertinent information delivered for the reader to absorb a firm understanding about air transportation.
The problem is that this 500 page book covers an awful lot of technical material. He selectively crammed it all into 500 pages. Some important elements are missing. The title of the book should be more concise about which audience the author wanted to attract, and spread all his great information into two brilliantly-written volumes.

Air Transportation: A Management Perspective
ASIN: 041521324X |
Book Description
The underlying crisis facing the airline industry has been apparent since early 2000. But for the past 45 years, airlines have struggled to find financial success in the very competitive transportation industry. In the weeks that followed the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the airline industry became close to bankrupt, with flights being grounded in other parts of the world as well as in the United States.
Flying Off Course has established itself over the years as the indispensable guide to the inner workings of the aviation industry. This third edition is fully updated to include case studies of Easyjet, Ryanair, Buzz, Go, Virgin and British Airways.
It also includes new material on airline alliances, the rise of the low cost airlines, the impact of new technology on the business as well as how to deal with both eroding passenger confidence and the possible worsening of the global economic slowdown post-September 11th.
Customer Reviews:
First Rate Book on Aitrline Economics.......2006-01-24
Since my early days in the aviation industry in the mid-1980s, the first edition of "Flying Off Course: The economics of International Airlines" was the only comprehensive book I had covering the major aspects of airline economics. When the second edition was printed in 1991, I eagerly got myself a copy as the book was an indispensable item in my library.
I am very gratified to have the third edition as a lot has happened since the first two editions. Low cost airlines came on the scene in a big way, modelled along the lines of the highly successful Southwest Airlines in the USA. The phenomena of major airline alliances and mergers also expanded greatly as well as more widespread liberalisation of the industry. All these and many other facets of this fascinating industry have been updated by one the most renowned and respected experts in the field, Professor Rigas Doganis.
The book is presented in clear simple English enabling it to be easily understood by anyone with an interest in aviation. This book is a must to read by airline practitioners and those interested in a serious study of the subject.
Academically Rigorous, Yet Comprehensible.......2004-09-14
This is the best introduction to the fundamentals of airline economics that I have ever read. Doganis, an analyst and teacher these days, is able to take all his years in industry (including a stint as CEO of Olympic Airways of Greece) and distill it into a useful text full of real world examples. The third edition is updated to include new developments like Internet ticketing, and was written post-9/11, so that sections dealing with issues such as security are up to date.
The book has complete sections on airline, aircraft, and route planning and forecasting, and related subjects such as yield management, marketing, and charter operations. Of particular note is the chapter on pricing policies and fare structures; it is clear that Doganis completely understands the significance of the low cost carriers and the future of yields throughout the different regions of the world.
I always enjoy reading Doganis, and vastly prefer this updated version of "Flying Off Course" to the pre-9/11 "The Airline Business in the 21st Century" (although I do recommend that book as well.) This is a great book, and should be read and understood by airline managers everywhere. My only caution is that though it is not the most mathematically exhaustive book on the subject, casual readers may not enjoy the book inasmuch as it is quite weighty and the chapter on forecasting demand is fairly mathematically rigorous.
Great overview, at times too basic.......2004-03-09
Having worked in airports for the past 10 years, and now moving to the airline side, I wanted a broad overview of airline economics. The book did a first rate job.
The only criticism would be that if you have a few years of experience and know your way around the basics of financial analysis, some of the examples and explanations will be a bit of a waste of time.
The book is well structured and about as interesting as a book on this subject can be (be realistic, the subject has it's limits...). A great novice book, a good one for those already airside.
Nice introduction.......2002-03-18
If you need a quick insight into airline business - BUY THIS BOOK. Rigas did a great job in explaining the difficult world of airline business to a dummy like me. Now, having a quite deeper knowledge, I am missing some in-depth information about the commercial side and route planning. Overall: a best buy.
Good book but a bit out of date.......2002-03-07
I am an airline analyst and this book give me some background info on different aspcet. It gives you basic understanding on how the industry works and I personally learn a lot from this.
The problem is that it is a bit out of date and so I need to spend a lot of time verifing the data. Other than that, this is a very good one for beginners.
Book Description
The face of Arizona has changed dramatically over the centuriesbut for those who know where to look, the coyote still howls, waterfalls still tumble into deep red rock canyons, and some of natures finest handiwork is still to be seen along the backroads and byways of the state. For the open-road adventurer or the armchair tourist, Backroads of Arizona is the ideal guide to the state where antelope still roam, cowboys still ride the range, and mail is still delivered by mule train. Jim Hinckleys informative text and Kerrick James brilliant color photography reveal the Grand Canyon State as more than just desert and towering saguaros: It is a powerful land of compelling variety where a mere sixty-mile drive can transport you from scorching sands to dense evergreen stands where deer and elk roam.

Customer Reviews:
Valuable for any aviation enthusiast.......2004-06-23
101 Best Aviation Attractions is a great book for aviation enthusiasts.
The book lists different aviations attractions and museums throughout the world. It has information about the event itself, in addition to hotel and other important information.
The only downside to the book is that it lacks an index of the location of ach item. An index of all attractions on a state-by-state basis would add a lot of value.
Other than that, this is a great guide for finding the best aviation events and attractions throughout the world.

Must have for all transport planners.......2000-09-19
I had referred this book in 1995 during my post-graduate dissertation on "Busway Transit for Ahmedabad (India)". I feel it is the only book on earth that covers all the aspects related to mass transit technology and planning. Beautiful photographs and illustrations. A must have book for all planners. Bhargav Adhvaryu (Engineer-Urban/Transport Planner)
Thorough and invaluable.......1998-01-22
Indespensible tool of any transportation professional, be it an engineer or a planner. Still seems current even though it was written almost 20 years ago. Excellent diagrams and a highly in-depth look at transit modes
Excellent book which is very logically done........1998-01-16
Dr. Vuchic does an incredible job of covering urban transit and the varieties of it in the world. While showing its age with parts getting dated, the book still offers sound planning advice in a comprehensive manner. It is a must for the urban planner.

All across Asia, the rickshaw reigns--as trusty public transportation, tourist attraction, or both. Tony Wheeler and Richard l'Anson traipsed thousands of miles, from China to Indonesia, to ride, photograph, and otherwise investigate this inveterate Asian taxicab. They visited 12 cities in all, traveling through Agra, Calcutta, Hanoi, Macau, Penang, Singapore, Beijing, Dhaka, Hong Kong, Manila, Rangoon, and Yogykarta, following the wheel ruts of the rickshaw--or trishaw, sidecar, pedicab, cyclo, or becak--depending on which city they were in. The result, other than some callused posteriors, is a splendid homage to a transportation tradition. Wheeler explains the history of the cycle-rickshaw, why it remains such a popular and omnipresent form of Asian transport, and how it varies from country to country. The book is studded with glossy photographs of the various riders (the people who pedal, as opposed to the passengers), and rickshaws put to all sorts of uses. Pictures show rickshaws laden with freight (11 metal containers), or children (10 school-bound kids), as well as a close-up of Mohan, an Agra fellow who, at 65, has been riding rickshaws for 40 years and typically makes one to three dollars a day. We see Beijing rickshaw riders, enthused about their jobs, pleased with the freedom of movement, the decent pay, and the healthy exercise--and the rickshaw men of Calcutta, who are pullers rather than riders. Hand-pulled on wooden wheels, Calcutta rickshaws haven't changed much in a century of use, and they own the streets during monsoons, when the more advanced machinery of the auto bogs down. And Dhaka, the world's rickshaw capital, is populated by more than 300,000 rickshaws. Elaborately decorated and often jammed in downtown rickshaw snarls, they dominate local traffic. And so the stories unfold across the continent. Rickshaws provide more than a focus for the book--they allow for an unusual, educational, and intimate portrait of Asia.
Book Description
Studied by engineers, evaluated by transportation economists and analyzed by sociologists, rickshaws and their riders are now celebrated in a fascinating and beautifully illustrated hardcover book. Inveterate Asia travelers Tony Wheeler and Richard I'Anson team up to explore the fascinating world of rickshaws - from the cycles of Vietnam to the teak becaks of Java - in a dozen cities throughout Asia.
Customer Reviews:
Wow.......2005-08-21
I love this book, I had to get a second hand one, it was worth it. I has everything you might want to know about rickshaws and more. All my cycle friends borrow this book. It needs to be reprinted!
"Chasing Rickshaws" documents a long and colorful history........1999-07-29
"Chasing Rickshaws" documents the long and colorful history of the rickshaw. From the early rickshaws to the more recent pedicabs, Wheeler remarks on the humble beginnings and changes surrounding this most common form of transportation. The surprising variations and ingenuity of the rickshaw designs combined with the hard work and hardship endured by the drivers or pullers makes for an interesting mixture of culture and history. The photos are vivid and portray more than an image of a somewhat outmoded vehicle, they show a unique insight into what makes this very common people-hauler, grocery-getter such an integral part of many countries daily routines. With rising interest in tourist pedicabs, this book is a must read for anyone about to embark on a rickshaw adventure.
Great photos!.......1999-01-25
As one who is devoted to seeing pedicabs everywhere, this book was a great inspiration. This study of pedicab businesses in many major Asian cities gives insights into the vital economic niche that this enterprise fills. Great reading for those interested in sustainable enterprises and economies.

Book Description
This book bridges a crucial gap in the literature on gender and organizational culture by providing an historical account of how discriminatory practices develop, are maintained but also change over time. Drawing on in-depth interviews and extensive archival material, the author presents an historical account of the way specific discriminatory practices developed and changed over the life of three airline companies--British Airways, Air Canada, and Pan American Airways. The book covers the period 1919 to 1991 and is organized around key periods in the hiring and treatment of female employees but the focus is on gender in the broadest sense of the word (looking at the social construction of male and female sexuality; heterosexuality and homosexuality). Gender is explored through analysis of organizational symbolism, workplace practices and organizational structuring. As a history of discriminatory practices the book is unique in the field of business and corporate history.
