Book Description
She charmed America with her smart, likable, down-to-earth personality as she campaigned for her husband, then vice-presidential candidate John Edwards. She inspired millions as she valiantly fought advanced breast cancer after being diagnosed only days before the 2004 election. She touched hundreds of similarly grieving families when her own son, Wade, died tragically at age sixteen in 1996. Now she shares her experiences in Saving Graces, an incandescent memoir of Edwards’ trials, tragedies, and triumphs, and of how various communities celebrated her joys and lent her steady strength and quiet hope in darker times.
Edwards writes about growing up in a military family, where she learned how to make friends easily in dozens of new schools and neighborhoods around the world and came to appreciate the unstinting help and comfort naval families shared. Edwards’ reminiscences of her years as a mother focus on the support she and other parents offered one another, from everyday favors to the ultimate test of her own community’s strength—their compassionate response to the death of the Edwards’ teenage son, Wade, in 1996. Her descriptions of her husband’s campaigns for Senate, president, and vice president offer a fascinating perspective on the groups, great and small, that sustain our democracy. Her fight with breast cancer, which stirred an outpouring of support from women across the country, has once again affirmed Edwards’ belief in the power of community to make our lives better and richer.

saving graces.......2007-09-24
Felt this book artfully expressed loss. It included the gammet of feelings and expressions one might endure while experiencing loss of any type. Hopefully she also found solace in teaching us as well as finding herself. Would recommend to anyone because at some point, we all experience loss. Hopefully not as Elizabeth Edwards did.
My honor to read this life journey of E. Edwards.......2007-09-19
The book is a gift of her use of the English language. The use of words, the integrity of the writer shines through. She uses her gift to share her pain, pain many of us have felt but could not have put into words with the artistry that is just part of her. It is rare for a person to be able to put their soul in paper, but she has. Thank you, Elizabeth. Saving Graces: Finding Solace and Strength from Friends and Strangers
Saving Graces.......2007-09-17
Great book, well written. It makes you realize you can overcome any obstacle in life with family and support from friends.
Excellent........2007-09-14
Eliabeth Edwards writes with painful honesty and hope. She is an extrordinary woman and this glimpse into her soul is a wonderful read.
Wonderful book!.......2007-09-13
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I got a whole new insight into the Edwards family. Elizabeth didn't shy away from the pain caused by the untimely death of their wonderful son, Wade, or her initial experience of her breast cancer treatment. There is also an additional chapter in this paperback book regarding the return of her cancer. Her humor cracked me up several times, and I was so inspired by the whole family. They are certainly a strong family, both Elizabeth and John come from strong stock, and it shows. I for one, given the chance, will vote for John Edwards for President. I think he's the one we need to lead this country ahead and away from our current administration's boggling.
Book Description
Charles Frazier’s
Thirteen Moons is the story of one man’s remarkable life, spanning a century of relentless change. At the age of twelve, an orphan named Will Cooper is given a horse, a key, and a map and is sent on a journey through the wilderness to the edge of the Cherokee Nation, the uncharted white space on the map. Will is a bound boy, obliged to run a remote Indian trading post. As he fulfills his lonesome duty, Will finds a father in Bear, a Cherokee chief, and is adopted by him and his people, developing relationships that ultimately forge Will’s character. All the while, his love of Claire, the enigmatic and captivating charge of volatile and powerful Featherstone, will forever rule Will’s heart.
In a distinct voice filled with both humor and yearning, Will tells of a lifelong search for home, the hunger for fortune and adventure, the rebuilding of a trampled culture, and above all an enduring pursuit of passion. As he comes to realize, “When all else is lost and gone forever, there is yearning. One of the few welcome lessons age teaches is that only desire trumps time."
Will Cooper, in the hands of Charles Frazier, becomes a classic American soul: a man devoted to a place and its people, a woman, and a way of life, all of which are forever just beyond his reach.
Thirteen Moons takes us from the uncharted wilderness of an unspoiled continent, across the South, up and down the Mississippi, and to the urban clamor of a raw Washington City. Throughout, Will is swept along as the wild beauty of the nineteenth century gives way to the telephones, automobiles, and encroaching railways of the twentieth. Steeped in history, rich in insight, and filled with moments of sudden beauty,
Thirteen Moons is an unforgettable work of fiction by an American master.

“What a story!... Frazier's creation, Will Cooper, is utterly charismatic….Frazier's genius lies in his ability to convey emotions that feel pure and genuine…It was worth the wait.”
–Dayton Daily News
“To Charles Frazier, words are playthings. Like very few other contemporary American novelists, he puts them together in such a way that they can transform an otherwise mundane moment, scene or conversation into one that is transcendent….No sophomore jinx here. Reading a Frazier novel is like listening to a fine symphony. He's a maestro whose pen is his baton, beckoning the best that each sentence has to offer. And just as you wouldn't rush a conductor, you should take the time to savor Frazier’s work, to take in each thought, to relish the turn of phrase or the imagery of a craftsman.”
–Denver Post
“Two for two…Here is a book brimming with vivid, adventurous incident…Charles Frazier set himself a daunting challenge with this book. He set out to write a historical novel that was retrospective and meditative, yet still vibrant and immediate with life. Thirteen Moons succeeds in classy fashion.”
–Raleigh News & Observer
“If current fiction is anything to go by, it’s hard for a novelist to make Santayana's puzzle pieces - lyricism, comedy, tragedy - fit together, as they do in real life and real history. Frazier has done it…Thirteen Moons makes you feel that change that happened so long before our own time, and makes you mourn it.”
–Newsday
“[Thirteen Moons] is superbly entertaining, and it packs enough emotional heft to measure up to most readers’ high expectations.”
–Richmond Times-Dispatch
“Thirteen Moons is a fitting successor to Cold Mountain…fans of Frazier's debut will be cheered to discover that the new book is another compulsively readable work of historical fiction.”
–St. Louis Post-Dispatch
“If there is any doubt that Frazier is an incredibly gifted storyteller - and not just a lucky name or a one-hit wonder - it will be put to rest with the publication of Thirteen Moons. Within 10 pages, this long-awaited new novel bears the reader swiftly out of the waking world into its own imagined universe like nothing else published this year.”
–Minneapolis Star Tribune
“Achingly beautiful descriptions of nature…It’s rich, it’s beautiful.”
–Columbia State
“Forget the sophomore jinx. Frazier demonstrates that Cold Mountain was no one-hit wonder with this fully realized historical novel again set in the South….Again, Frazier shows himself a master of landscape and language, both often fresh and surprising in his telling.
–Seattle Post-Intelligencer
“Thirteen Moons contains achingly beautiful passages of snowfalls, fog-wrapped rivers and moonlit forests. There are ribald and hilarious events, too, including a description of the Cherokee Booger Dance that is a masterpiece of satire. The love affair between Cooper and Claire threads its way through this pseudo-historic epic like a brilliant, scarlet ribbon. There is also a melancholy refrain that celebrates a wondrous time and place that is gone and will never return.”
–Smoky Mountain News
“Once again, we are in the hands of an assured writer who knows how to bring history to life…Gorgeous.”

Thirteen Moons.......2007-10-18
I hesitated about picking up this book as I had read Cold Mountain and did not care for it. The flip-flopping through the whole book got irritating.
This book, however, was a delight. The story of an orphan who makes good despite the many obstacles in his path, the history, the span of a lifetime, the white man's culture vs. the indians' culture...I found it fascinating and very readable. It is a bit over 400 pages but a good book can go on forever as far as I'm concerned.
Starts off good, but..........2007-10-05
The first half of "Thirteen Moons" soars; the second half sinks. As I got into the story and its lovely language, I was prepared to give it a rating of 8.5 or higher. But it eventually fades into dissolution, ending with a whimper, not a bang. Rob's rating: 8.0 of 10.
See http://www.bluecorncomics.com/13moons.htm for a longer review.
Dull and flat characters.......2007-09-24
I started this book because our book group is reading it. The character is flat and self-absorbed. You get to the point that you don't care what happens to the character because he is so dull. I don't finish it because there was nothing of interest to keep me going.......You feel nothing for the characters... so why read?
The Abridged version is confusing.......2007-09-23
I bought this book as an audio book, abridged.
It was confusing. Stick to the unabridged.
Faulkner, McCarthy, Frazier.......2007-09-19
Thirteen Moons is a pure Masterpiece. I think it should be getting more credit for being one of the greatest American novels ever written. I cannot believe how rounded Will Cooper is as a character. I have never read a book that has a character as real as this. Everything about his life and times, reactions, words, feelings, inner thoughts are absolutely real and consistent. Bear, Featherstone, Claire all come to life so perfectly. I was amazed that anyone found reason to criticize this novel. The metaphors, details and knowledge of the region makes Frazier seem supernatural to me. He was there. It's just weird how well he knows this tale and how real it all is. Perfect writing.

Book Description
Eagerly anticipated by her legions of fans, this sixth novel in Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling Outlander saga is a masterpiece of historical fiction from one of the most popular authors of our time.
Since the initial publication of
Outlander fifteen years ago, Diana Gabaldon’s New York Times bestselling saga has won the hearts of readers the world over — and sold more than twelve million books. Now,
A Breath of Snow and Ashes continues the extraordinary story of 18th-century Scotsman Jamie Fraser and his 20th-century wife, Claire.
The year is 1772, and on the eve of the American Revolution, the long fuse of rebellion has already been lit. Men lie dead in the streets of Boston, and in the backwoods of North Carolina, isolated cabins burn in the forest.
With chaos brewing, the governor calls upon Jamie Fraser to unite the backcountry and safeguard the colony for King and Crown. But from his wife Jamie knows that three years hence the shot heard round the world will be fired, and the result will be independence — with those loyal to the King either dead or in exile. And there is also the matter of a tiny clipping from The Wilmington Gazette, dated 1776, which reports Jamie’s death, along with his kin. For once, he hopes, his time-traveling family may be wrong about the future.
From the Hardcover edition.

Another great addition to the Fraser family saga.......2007-10-17
I discovered the Outlander series several years ago and was immediatly hooked on both Ms. Gabaldon's incredible story-telling and her ability to weave real history through the tales to make the past really come alive. This latest addition may be the best yet. I could not put it down and cannot wait for the next installment to come out. I would recommend this book (and all of the Outlander series) to anyone who enjoys great stories, a little romance and a bit of a history lesson tucked inside.
LOVED IT!!!!.......2007-10-12
Great book! WOW!!! If you've loved the series so far, you will love this one too.
So far as I know, this is the last in the series.......2007-09-22
I've seen some negative comments about The Fiery Cross - and there is an explanation for its being less than Gabaldon fans have come to expect. It's not my business to explain it and that's all I'm going to say. If you want more of Claire and Jamie, you'd better start over - I just did. AND, you can always buy The Outlandish Companion or the Lord John Grey novels.
Good ending to the series.......2007-09-14
Finally the last epic of Claire and Jamie, Diana G has compleded the series in a good way, I was satisfied with the completion, it was time for the end to come, after all how many war's could Jamie still conquer! Good read, recommend.
A Breath of Snow and Ashes (Outlander).......2007-08-24
Another really good read from Diana Gabaldon. It turns out I had already read this book but all her books of this series are worth a second or third read. I have already re-read the other books from this series and wish she would get the next book done and quit keeping us in suspense.

Book Description
Miami is still freakin' humid. The nights are even hotter. And there's a body on ice. And that's just the beginning of this adrenaline-rush of a hot-wired ride from phenomenal number one New York Times bestselling author Janet Evanovich.
A woman with a taste for speed and a talent for breaking the rules, Barney also knows a little too much about cheating. First there was Hooker and that salesclerk. Now she's convinced one of the competitors is up to no good on the track. Snooping to find evidence, Hooker and Barney "borrow" a NASCAR hauler. Turns out, the hauler is carrying two race cars and a dead guy. It looks like Barney and Hooker are facing multiple counts of grand theft auto and homicide.
So buckle up as Barney, Hooker, a 150-pound bundle of Saint Bernard love named Beans, and the Super Cigar Ladies Felicia and Rosa shift into gear on a wild race around South Florida and Concord, North Carolina.
Everything you always wanted to know about righteous indignation, stealing an eighteen-wheeler, and sex in the fast lane.

Another good series by Evanovich.......2007-09-28
The motor series, is another good series. Janet Evanovich is a great writer. I love the Plum series, so I tried these, and I really like them too. Looking forward to another one in this series. Good fast read.
I really appreciate the humor of this book.......2007-09-07
I found the book hillarious and again I laugh out loud. I truly enjoy the crazy circumstances that she gets herself into. Such loyalty and humor. I can't wait to read another.....
Just One More Time.......2007-08-19
"Motor Mouth" begins with a great racing scene with Alex "Barney" Barnaby, serving as a spotter for Sam Hooker. The race doesn't go as planned and another wins. But did the winner have a little more help than usual from his sponsor?
Sam has been a stinker as he drifted into other arms, but "Barney" still earns her pay when she discovers hidden computer signals on a rival car, takes off in a hauler with a shrink wrapped body, Sam and their dog, Beans.
New characters enter the story to help may cling to your affection as Stephanie's grandmother.
Moves fast, stays on track and delights fans while over indulging in the term "Nascar Man." After a while one gets the picture that Sam drives for Nascar.
Nash Black, author of "Qualifying Laps" and "Sins of the Fathers."
It is what it is..........2007-08-13
This book is mind candy - nothing more and nothing less. It is a pool or beach book, it can be read while the t.v. is on or during some sport practice. It is the literary equivalent of Desperate Housewives, only less annoying. Personally I like Barney and Hooker but I'm a southern girl and I get their vibe more than that produced by the Stephanie/Ranger/Joe love triangle. I get the same pleasure from this series as I do the Plum novels - they all are what they are...a guilty pleasure. Don't expect too much.
And to reviewers who don't like Hooker because he cheated - do you still like Stephanie? She cheated on Joe remember. Let's not be hypocrites here and think that girls can cheat but hang the guys for doing the same. Those who don't like Beans obviously never loved a big ole' stinky dog. He reminds me of all the St's I've ever known - too bad it you haven't had the pleasure.
Lighten up on this series and it's characters folks - don't expect every female character to be Stephanie (thank goodness they aren't), every hot guy to be in the ethnic Joe/Ranger mold. How confining!
And by the way, I'm from NASCAR territory and believe me when I say that there are some scary smart good ole boys trolling these parts that most folks would think are dumb as dirt if they didn't know better. Hooker's character is based on these very sexy sly-as-a-fox guys that southern girls have loved for a long time. Kudos to Evanovich for putting one in print.
Mind candy...guilty pleasure...gotta love it
A great light read!.......2007-08-08
Evanovich has a light quick moving style all her own. If you have ready any of her works, and liked what you read, you will not be disappointed. I thought this book was a nice sequal to the first book involving these characters, "Metro Girl". There is some good humor spread throughout as well. Happy reading!
Book Description
Forty years ago, North Carolina's Elon College was struggling to attract students and remain solvent. Today Elon enrolls students from 46 states and 40 foreign countries. Since 1988, it has erected a new library, student center, football stadium, fitness center, and science facilities on its 500-acre campus. The number of applications has risen 40 percent since 1995, and SAT scores of incoming students have improved by 98 points. Elon has emerged as one of America's most desirable colleges.
How did this transformation happen? What can other colleges and universities learn from Elon's remarkable turnaround? Taking a new approach to the study of higher education, George Keller examines the decisions made by Elon's administration, trustees, and faculty to transform a school with a limited endowment into a top regional university. Using Elon as a case study, Keller sheds light on high-stakes competition among America's colleges and universities -- where losers face contraction or closure and winners gain money, talented students, and top faculty.
Customer Reviews:
My son goes to Elon!.......2005-10-11
For a parent -- whose son goes to Elon University (Class of '08) -- this is a fascinating read. It should be very interesting (required reading?) for any private college administrator, potential student/parent, or major donor (it desperately needs to build endowment). Last year there were 9,000 applicants for a Freshman class of 1,200. Elon is indeed a former "hidden gem" college that has definitely ARRIVED!

Miss Julia.......2007-10-17
Miss Julia is a wonderful series--quite refreshing from the various other novels on the market that feel they have to include violence, sex, and inappropriate behavior. Miss Julia stands on my old-fashioned values!
Miss Julia Stands Her Ground.......2007-08-24
The people Miss Julia loves most are under fire, and she goes to all lengths to keep them safe. Miss Julia is the heroine again!
Just As Good As Previous Miss Julia Books!.......2007-06-11
As a break from some of the heavier books I love to read, Miss Julia is a delight! Her outlook on life and those who are in her life never bore and I feel like I know these people.
I always pass my Miss Julia books on to my daughters as they love them as much as I.
Be sure to read this.......2007-05-13
Anna Ross writes such great books. Always fun to read
Go Miss Julia .......2007-05-02
MISS JULIA STANDS HER GROUND by Ann B. Ross (Penguin ISBN 978-0-14-303855-9) This is number seven in the series. I haven't read any of the others. I have been in cozy moods and liked this book taking place in the south. Maybe I should call it aged "southern comfort." Miss Julia may be a remarried widow and sixtyish senior citizen, but she is not one to sit around and twiddle her thumbs. She even has a policeman who rents a room from her.
Living in a small town did not stop Miss Julia from taking in Hazel Marie, her dead husband's mistress and their child Little Lloyd. Miss Julia is teaching Hazel a lot; however, some habits are hard to break. Miss Julia is a very wealthy widow, but is tight with her money which I gather is thanks to Wesley Lloyd Springer, her dead husband. Lillian works for Miss Julia and lets her know when she is not doing what she thinks is best, and she gets away with it. Another strong influence is lawyer Sam Murdoch, who is now Miss Julia's husband.
Things have been fine until Brother Vern Puckett, Hazel Marie's crooked "preacher" uncle, arrives in town. He is out to take control of Hazel Marie's money. He is out to prove Little Lloyd was not Wesley's child and even gets one guy to step forward and claim Little Lloyd as his own. Brother Vern is not the most upstanding person in any community. If he could prove that Wesley wasn't Little Lloyd's father, Miss Julia and Hazel would stand to lose quite a bit. If Brother Vern gets away with his claim, living arrangements and finances for Miss Julia and Hazel would be screwed up. Thanks goodness for DNA but how it is gotten to prove who Little Lloyd's father really is something else.
Then a number of Miss Julia's church have signed a petition to have Miss Julia become the first woman elder of the church. Pastor Ledbetter is totally against that. How Miss Julia deals with that is another little thing added to the book.
Some other shenanigans take place, like money lending.

Father Tim, a cherished small-town rector, is the steadfast soldier in this beloved slice of life story set in an American village where the grass is still green, the pickets are still white, and the air still smells sweet. The rector's forthright secretary, Emma Garret, worries about her employer, as she sees past his Christian cheerfulness into his aching loneliness. Slowly but surely, the empty places in Father Tim's heart do get filled. First with a gangly stray dog, later with a seemingly stray boy, and finally with the realization that he is stumbling into love with his independent and Christian-wise next-door neighbor. Much more than a gentle love story, this is a homespun tale about a town of endearing characters-- including a mysterious jewel thief--who are as quirky and popular as those of Mayberry, R.F.D. --Gail Hudson

Book - "At Home in Mitford".......2007-09-21
It's an absolutely wonderful story. It's about the experiences of Father Tim over his lifetime of being a minister. Some of his experiences were funny, some sad. I highly recommend it. There are 9 books in the series, but this one should really be read first.
SUPERB WRITING.......2007-08-27
In my opinion AT HOME IN MITFORD is one of the most fantastic books you can't help but feel like your there.
A BREATH OF FRESH AIR.......2007-08-27

No bad language,no violence, just pure love, joy, and how most anyone would love to live their life as this.Keeps you interest at high level all the way through the book, and leaves you with such a good feeling, can't wait to get to the rest of them.Jan Karon has to be a truly blessed author.Thank You
Such FUN to read!.......2007-07-24
A friend of mine insisted that I'd like this book but I wasn't so sure - because for some reason I'd presumed that it would be simple and silly. Was I wrong! This book is so much FUN to read! And you never know what will happen next. Spending time with these folks in this village is like a vacation. I will read the entire series. It reminds me of the style of James Herriott, the veterinarian in England stories.
Mitford series review.......2007-07-15
I have read all the books in the Mitford series. I could not put them down. I thought they were all very good. I think Jan Karon did an excellent job making the reader feel these characters were real and that we were right there with them in the story (and I'm not one to be like that at all!) I haven't found many books that I enjoyed reading as much as I did this series. I can't wait for more stories written by Jan Karon.

"Somewhere," muses Noah Calhoun, while sitting on his porch in the moonight, "there were people making love." The Notebook, a Southern-fried story of love-lost-and-found-again, revolves around a single time-honored romantic dilemma: will beautiful Allison Nelson stay with Mr. Respectability (to whom she happens to be engaged), or will she choose Noah, the romantic rascal she left so many years ago?

One Of My Faves.......2007-10-15
I'm not going to describe the book because so many before me have. But I do want to say that it is one of my favorite books and what got me to like Nicholas Sparks. Some aspects are a bit far fatch but its kind of sweet to think that someone would be so enamored with someone else. Its a sweet story. I don't know why anyone would give this book a bad review unless you don't like romance novels.
Forever in Love.......2007-10-13
I was captured from the very beginning of the book, and had to read it in one sitting. It is a magnificent piece of writing describing the intricacies of the human soul. Bravo for Nicholas Sparks!
The title is relevant, for it depicts the notebook that Noah shares with Allie, his wife. The notebook describes the love story of Noah and Allie. This is the story Noah reads to his wife every day, in the hospital, hoping that one day, she will remember their life together.
As a young man, Noah's life was changed when he met Allie. They came from different worlds, yet their love blossomed during those few weeks together. After fourteen years of separation, she re-enters his life, and this time, never leaves again. They have a happy marriage and children; and then 49 years later, the inevitable happens, she leaves Noah again. This time, it is not her doing. It's Alzheimer's that snatches her away.
The love that Noah has for his wife is all consuming and so powerful, that it had me in tears. Nicholas Sparks' writing has reached a higher level of writing that aptly captures the human spirit in love to perfection. Noah has moved into the hospital, in another room, to be by his wife's side. Every day, he makes the trip to her room, and reads to her, and leaves poems underneath her pillow, and every day she doesn't remember him, which is heart wrenching to see. A few letters that she's written to him in the past reveal her true love for him also.
The surprising twist at the end of the story left me sighing with satisfaction. Can it be? Can miracles happen? Read the book to find out!
Get a cavity from the endless amounts of ridiculous sugar.......2007-09-09
How did anyone actually like this? It is badly written, has all the cliches of a second rate romance novel, no plot, no characterization worth even mentioning and I got a cavity from the endless amounts of syrupy sugar. It actually worries me that so many people liked it. I have to wonder why and what is missing in life that makes someone say "this is wonderful!" about a turd.
A Warm and wonderful story.......2007-08-28
The Notebook will have you rooting for the characters from the beginning and crying at the end. There are certainly similarities with "Bridges of Madison County", but I really enjoyed this book over that book. "The Notebook" will touch your senses to make you remember exactly how much you treasure your spouse. An excellent story.
The book is better than the movie.......2007-08-25
My dad first told me about this book. It sounded like a good old fashioned love story. I bought it before, loaned it and never got it back it was so good. So I bought it again. After this came out, Reader's Digest had a short story to continue on with Noah through the years. The sequel The Wedding, is about their children. I loved the book and only mildly enjoyed the movie. I own all Nicholas Sparks books, he is an amazing author, all his books have a different lesson on love.

New York Times bestselling author Patricia Cornwell brings back Kay Scarpetta, consulting forensic pathologist for the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit, in her grittiest and most compelling novel. In rural North Carolina, the brutal murder of eleven-year-old Emily Steiner has shaken a small town. But more disturbing are the details of the crimes, chillingly reminiscent of the handiwork of a serial killer who has eluded the unit for years. Into this volatile atmosphere comes Scarpetta's ingenious, rebellious niece Lucy, an FBI intern with a promising future in Quantico's computer engineering facility--until she is accused of a shocking security violation. While coming to terms with Lucy, Kay must conduct a grisly forensic investigation at a clandestine research facility in Tennessee known as the Body Farm. There she will find more answers to Emily Steiner's murder--and evidence that paints a picture of a crime more horrifying than she imagined . . .
Book Description
Little Emily Steiner left a church meeting late one afternoon and strolled toward home along a lakeside path; a week later, her nude body was discovered, bound in blaze-orange duct tape. Called by the North Carolina authorities, forensic pathologist Kay Scarpetta recognizes similarities to the gruesome work of a serial killer who has long eluded the FBI But as she tries to make sense of the evidence, she is left with questions that lead her to the Body Farm, a little known research facility in Tennessee where, with the help of some grisly experiments, she might discover the answer. It is Scarpetta alone who can interpret the forensic hieroglyphics that eventually reveal a solution to the case as staggering as it is horrifying. But she must also endeavor to help her niece, Lucy, who is embroiled in controversy at Quantico. And Scarpetta, too, is vulnerable, as she opens herself to the first physical and emotional bond she has felt in far too long a time. Tenacious and brilliant, tender and gentle, this is Scarpetta even more realized and poignant than we've seen her before--in a stunning achievement from a best-selling author at the peak of her powers.

Could have been better.......2007-10-12
"Body Farm" is definitely not one of Cornwell's best. I liked the story line, but could do w/o the "romance" & her obnoxious niece Lucy. Also, I was able to figure out "who done it" way to easily.
I think this bk. had good possibilities, however it just seemed to fizzle.
I could not finish this book..........2007-09-01
I was disappointed with "At Risk". However, I knew that it was originally presented as a magazine series, and that seemed to explain the lack of continuity and the abrupt ending.
I was intrigued by the title -- "The Body Farm" -- and reviews that claimed it to be Cornwell's best work. I was also willing to give the author another chance.
Big mistake.
This book was entirely unengaging and characters were poorly developed. The fact that I hadn't read the previous books featuring Dr. Scarpetta doesn't seem to be to blame...
I made it through the first 200 pages and was still waiting for the story to get started!! I decided that I had suffered enough before flipping 160 pages ahead to see who the killer was -- and it was completely ridiculous...and yet kind of obvious.
Don't waste your time. You've read books like this before (strong, stoic female detective solves crime while dealing with relationship issues) but done better.
I recommend Sue Grafton's ABC Mystery Series instead.
uh.........no thank you.......2006-08-21
Honestly I only read like 3/4 of the book. This was my first attempt a a Patricia Cornwell novel and probably the last. The murder they are investigating seemed interesting from the beginning but the little side story about Lucy was simply a distraction. What bothered me the most was that so much attention was paid to conversation that I had no idea where the characters were going, where they were standing, what they were doing etc. I started to wonder if this was a sequal to another book because there were so many things that to me (not very knowledgable about forensic terms, departments etc) were left poorly explained or not explained at all. I heard so much about this author and for my [partial] first attempt I am not impressed at all.
The Body Farm.......2006-08-02
An A-1 book in my opinion. It should have been a Bestseller. I usually read at night and this book helped the work day go faster knowing I'd be sitting down with it after dinner. Like my other favorite writers I look forward to Ms Cornwell's new projects.
