Product Description
Since applying the tools I learned in Brooke's program to my everyday life, I have already released 35 pounds of fat from my body. I no longer struggle with food and exercising has become a joy that I look forward to doing every day. Shopping in the stores I once used to walk by fills me with great delight, because I can finally wear the kinds of cute clothes that better fit my personality. Once I was able to create a new mind set that I am worth taking great care of myself, I experienced more happiness than I have ever known. For me, freedom from the weight struggle has been worth taking the risk to try again just one more time." Suyin N. Client San Mateo, CA

New Look at Old Problem.......2007-10-05
I've read a lot of books on how to lose weight. This is the first one that deals with the underlying emotional issues and not just controling the food. As a health care professional, I highl recommend this book.
excellent book.......2007-10-04
This book has had a life changing effect on me. I am so glad I bought it.
More than just a weight-loss book!.......2007-08-17
There are SO many books on this subject to choose from. If I had to choose just one, this would be it. It comes from a very loving place and offers some very real advice about why you are overweight and some real suggestions about what you can do about it. It goes deep at times, but once you realize that the outside is just a symptom, you can start focusing on what really matters and make changes that will last. The author suggests that you eat when you are hungry and stop when you're full, from -2 to 2 on a scale from -10 to 10 (so about every 2 or 3 hours). She encourages you to really pay attention to your body because it will let you know what it wants and needs. She asks you to commit to exercising at least 3 times a week for 5 minutes, and not eating or doing anything else to avoid your feelings. She wants her clients and readers to work with their bodies and no longer against them. It sounds simple, and it is, it's just that the whole subject has gotten so complicated we feel that there needs to be an elaborate answer. Here are a few of my favorite quotes from the book:
~"We have been trained not to waste food in the garbage, but to waste it on our bodies. Either way it is wasted. In one way, we just carry the waste with us."
~"Fat is merely tissue, stored potential energy."
****~If you believe that you will always be overweight, it will be very difficult to lose weight permanently. Beliefs and reality like to be reflective of each other. When reality starts to contradict a belief, a tension is created in our life and this tension makes us uncomfortable...At this point, we have two choices to reduce the tension: change the belief system or change the reality...to sabotage our reality and gain our weight back in order to be back in line with what we believe...It's not until we get hold of the belief and change it that we find any permanent weight-loss results."****
This would explain why most "diets" fail, because they are just treating the symptom and not the underlying problem.
This book is amazing and it was a total surprise, since I stumbled on it "accidentally." It works from the inside out, which is the best way to go about a permanent change. There are a lot of great exercises and suggestions. It was definitely worth my time and money, and I've already made a lot of the changes suggested in this book, and I feel more in control of my life and healthier already. A paradigm shift and a Fabulous book! =)
Very pleased.......2007-08-06
I almost cancelled my order for this book because I was very skeptical but I am so glad I received this book! I read over the entire book in a weekend and now re-reading it and doing the exercises. The exercises are an important part of the book. This is not just a book you should read but also need to work through the worksheets she includes. I've been overweight my entire life and for me this is the best book I've followed for losing weight. I do think this is a lot more than just about weight loss. By following the book will find greater joy in life. A lot of the info in the book can be used by everyone, not just those trying to lose weight. Highly recommend. Wish this book had been written 25 years ago!
A happy surprise.......2007-07-04
I have to admit I was skeptical, but this book does a great job of explaining eating in a healthy way. Forget trying to remember the proper portion size, because the way Castillo does it is way more simple and more attuned to your body. I go back to this book when I find myself starting to overeat or craving unhealthy food. It was definately worth the purchase!

The Greatest Adventure of all Time.......2007-05-26
When I first read the 1800 English translation, I could not put it down. Here are the first lines--a real grabbers! "In the year 1514, I left Castile (Spain) in company with Pedro Arias de Avila, who was then appointed governor of Tierra Firma (east Panama)...but afterwards suspicious that his son-in-law had an intention of revolting, he caused him to be beheaded."
Bernal's description of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan is amazing: "To many of us it appeared doubtful whether we were asleep of awake; nor is the manner in which I express myself to be wondered at, for it must be considered, that never yet did man see, hear or dream of anything equal to the spectacle which appeared to our eyes on this day."
And how about this magnificent line: "And now, let who can, tell me, where are men in this world to be found, except ourselves, who would have hazarded such an attempt."
And here is the horrific vision the Spaniards beheld when they climbed to the top of the great Aztec temple-pyramid. Remember that nearby, and looming up like a nightmare, was the stupendous "tzompantli," or skull rack. By careful Spanish count, it contained the grinning remains of 136,000 human beings.
"In this place they had a drum of most enormous size, the head of which was made of the skins of large serpents: this instrument when struck resounded with a noise that could be heard to the distance of two leagues, and so doleful that it deserved to be named the music of the infernal regions; and with their horrible sounding horns and trumpets, their great knives for sacrifice, their human victims, and their blood besprinkled altars, I devoted them, and all their wickedness to God's vengeance, and thought that the time would never arrive, that I should escape from this scene of human butchery, horrible smells, and more detestable sights."
The Conquest takes on a different color when seen through the eyes of the Spanish. Yes, they were greedy and cruel, but the scale of human sacrifice practiced by the Aztecs was beyond imagination. It is said that some twenty thousand people were sacrificed for the dedication of the Temple of the Sun. The Aztec priests worked for hours on end cutting out human hearts. They worked until they collapsed from exhaustion.
Bernal's history is also interesting for another entirely different reason. Joseph Smith (born 1805), the Mormon prophet, came of age during the period of English translations of Spanish histories (Bernal's in 1800 in London, and 1803 in the US, and Clevigero's "History of Mexico" in 1806 in Virginia and 1817 in Philadelphia).
Therefore, the golden splendor of the Spanish conquests of Mexico and Peru was fresh on everyone's mind, especially because the Spanish colony of Florida had become an American state (1821).
Thus, any notion that Americans were unaware of the great civilizations of ancient America is without foundation in real history. Ancient civilizations in America were so on the mind of people that in 1816, Solomon Spaulding wrote a history about a white and dark race in ancient America. His novel, "Manuscript Found," had the white race of mound builders destroyed by a darker-skin race.
Read my review of Robert Silverberg's magnificent book, "The Mound Builders of Ancient America: The Archaeology of a Myth." A must-read for anyone interested in the archaeology and myths about ancient America. Click here: Mound Builders
Great Eyewitness account.......2006-12-28
Diaz was one of the soldiers who accompanied Cortez to invade the Aztec Empire. His account is one of the best we have of the whole affair. It is not written with much bias and was written to discount historical myths after the invasion had taken place. It is very analytical at times and his analysis of what happened is given added authority since he was present at the events. If you want to understand what happened this is a great book to read.
Amazing first person historical account.......2006-02-15
First person historical accounts are generally the best way to read history and have it come alive in the mind of the reader. This book by Bernal Diaz is certainly no exception to that rule. Although Diaz wrote this much later in life, and doubtless his memory was not perfect, it is obvious that the experience of marching with Cortez in the conquest of the Aztec empire left innumerable vivid memories in his mind.
I am very sensitive to the fact that the conquest of the Aztec empire and other native empires in the Americas left a horrific legacy which is still felt dramatically throughout the hemisphere. Despite the fact that in many ways, the conquistadors should not be considered "heroes," I think we still can admire and be awed by their courage and fortitude in the face of unbelievable odds in facing the Aztecs and not only escaping with their lives, but eventually conquering the entire civilization. Diaz brings these events to life better than any history book I ever read, and I highly commend this book to anyone interested in the history of this period, of Mexico, or Latin America in general.
Every mexican and american in the west should read this........2005-09-25
most mexican-pride types haven't hit this book. if they did they would be greatly enlightened by the fact that mexico was not a united nation from campeche to oregon. the aztecs subjugated their neighbors just like the mexico city elite subjugate the common mexican to this day. this is one of the best books i've ever read and if you plan to visit mexico city it is a must-read if you want to have any basic understanding of modern mexico city and mexico in general. read it.
A great history of Mexico.......2005-07-25
This is the classic book on the history of the conquest of Mexico. Bernal Diaz fought on the front lines of Cortez's war, and he reports everything well in this book.
While Diaz may have been a great soldier, he was an awful writer. He wrote this book as he was aging well after he returned home to Spain. In his original edition, there were hundreds of pages of rambling personal attacks against various people in his life. As a result, Penguin has heavily edited this edition -- it's only about half the size of the original. However, the book is greatly improved this way, and Penguin's version is very easy to read and never gets boring.
Of course, Diaz doesn't have many negitive things to say about the Conquest, and he was a true believer in the religious mission of the conquistadors. Diaz essentially makes genocide seem not so bad. Read Bartolome de las Casas' books to balance out some of the propaganda contained in this book.

Excellent Resource of Mexican Marks.......2007-05-24
Over 200 pages of Mexican silver marks. The pictures are clear of the actual mark on the silver. Has a brief history under the makers name when available. Would buy this book again.
Mexican Silver trademark reference.......2007-03-27
A great reference book for collectors of Mexican silver jewelry. There are lots of pictures of marks as well as a long list of initials of Mexican designers including artists signatures with two initials and three initials. The Mexican eagle stamp is noted in all of its various forms through the decades. There is also a reference of the designers in the various Eagle numbered shops.

Customer Reviews:
Total rubbish...........2007-02-16
This book is the worst e-learning/Flash book i have ever bought. I was shocked by the seriously poor quality of the tutorial examples, it really does look like the authors of this book just do not care. How can an e-learning book from an e-learning company produce such crap, i work in a new media design studio and would never release such poor quality that is found page after page in this book. There is very little actionscript used in this book that is of any real help, again how can you create a great e-learning applications by avoiding the use of actionscript?
The actuall quality of the book itself is shocking, i found so many words missing, wrong sections highlighted (these were meant to give focus to a specific area of text). The book is so disorganised its amazing. From my experience i would stay well away from this book and and from Rapid Intake (the authoring company). What a complete waste of time and money.
Full of Errors.......2006-12-03
Do not buy this book. This book doesn't help it confuses and misleads you. I am amazed how is that they allow this book to be in here and how expensive it is for its content. I was really expecting more...or at least a book one could easily follow.

Book Description
In our increasingly multicultural global society, it has become important for practitioners to consider social and cultural factors when looking at the causes of, and treatments for, mental illness. The American Psychiatric Association recognized the role of culture in the recent DSM-IV. But the DSM-IV leaves practitioners wondering just how they should go about assessing those cultural factors. This book picks up where the DSM-IV leaves off.

My Favorite Book on Multicultural Psychology.......2006-06-19
I bought this book years ago when it first came out. It remains my favorite text on multicultural psychology, and it has plenty of clinical insights that I've never found elsewhere. Apparently, it didn't become a classic, but it SHOULD have, along with it's companion, "Meanings of Madness." I think it is just a little too brilliant and insightful to fit easily into the standard, stale multicultural zeitgeist.
One of my favorite sections was on dissociation, yoga and meditation. If I'm not mistaken, the author's thinking in this area remains about 3 steps ahead of eveybody else's. The insights around psychosis were remarkable, too.
You can pick up a standard text on multicultural clinical practice (e.g. Sue and Sue) and get all the standard basics of multicultural clinical psychology. Sue and Sue (and perhaps some other authors now) have written a fine textbook. But I look at their standard text as a very nice and reliable Buick, while Castillo's text is a classic Ferarri.
Yes, this text is currently waaayyyy too expensive. I'm not sure why. But then again, it is great stuff, worth the price of admission. Ignore the price; ignore the publication date. If you love multicultural clinical psychology, and you want to take your understanding to the next level, then treat yourself.
In the last chapter (Chapter 15), Castillo summarizes his contribution as follows: "In this book, I have taken an essentially anthropological viewpoint of mental illness, utilizing anthropology's deliberately holistic perspective and methodology, combining neurobiological, psychological, social, and cultural theories and data. I have specifically attempted to embrace a holistic, client-centered approach to assessment and diagnosis. In client-centered psychiatry, rather than diagnosis and treatment being concerned with a disease, diagnosis and treatment are concerned with an individual who has thoughts, emotions, a social context, and a set of cultural schemas. In this final chapter, I will define a client-centered model for psychopathology with an emphasis on the relationship between culture, brain plasticity, and mental illness."
The above summary is true. The author thus provides a "client-centered" framework for understanding culture and mental illness. I'm not sure if the author's insights led to the framework, or if the framework led to insights. Either way, the book delivers interesting, thoughtful, and important ideas.
Oh my!.......2004-06-03
This book is so expensive. I would hope it would be cheaper. Just a thought.

Book Description
If you are one of the more that two million people who have visited the web site at iCuban.com: The Internet Cuban, you already know who these Three Guys are. If you are one of the more than six billion people alive today who have not, a little explanation is in order. They are Three Guys From MiamiTM who share a passion for good food, good conversation, and a great party. Are you are new to Cuban cuisine? If so, then you are about to enter an exciting world of flavor. Cuban cooking combines the tastes of Spain with the tropical flavors of the Caribbean. Throw in some New World spices and ingredients and a strong African influence and you have the essence of Cuban cookery. These recipes also reflect ingredients and methods that were refined by Cuban exiles after they came to the United States. Here they found an abundance of foods that were either very scarce or completely unavailable in Castro's Cuba. Fish and seafood are two examples of foods that were only rarely enjoyed in Cuba after 1959. It was also impossible to get real olive oil-an ingredient that gives so many Cuban dishes a distinctive Latin flavor. Exile in the U.S. also exposed Cubans to ingredients they never saw in Havana. Salmon is very popular with Miami Cubans, for example, but unheard of in Cuba. Wherever possible the Three Guys have made these dishes simple to prepare. You don't need to be a professional chef to create any of the recipes in this book. Best of all, you don't need to be Cuban to cook and enjoy them. If a Swedish guy from Minnesota can cook Cuban food (and he does it very well), you can too! They have madge several appearances on the Food Network. Glenn Lindgren first came to Miami in 1984 and fell in love with the city, the people, and the Cuban culture. A freelance writer by profession, Glenn documents the antics of the Three Guys From Miami in books and on the Internet. When not in Miami, Glenn and his wife live in Minnesota with their son and two daughters. Raul Musibay, born in Cayo la Rosa, near Bauta, in the province of Havana, spent one winter in New Jersey but has been a full-time Miami resident ever since. He is the manager of the Red Bird Amoco station there. He and his wife have two married children. Jorge Castillo was born and raised in Cayo la Rosa, Havana. He came to the United States via the Mariel Boatlift in 1980, then left Miami after three months to live in Iowa, where he became a respiratory therapist. Now the regional sales manager for a major medical products company, he makes his home in Miami's West Dade with his wife and two daughters.

Another great book I gave as a present and ended up buying a copy for me. Great recepies, great pictures, put together very well. Just love it. Great book for my cook book library!
Three Guys from Miami Cook Cuban.......2007-09-21
Three Guys from Miami Cook Cuban I am married to a Cuban and have lived in Miami; my mother cooked in the latin way. This book is very authentic while making the recipes very easy. I would recommend this to everyone.
Great recipes, not so great banter.......2007-06-08
It's odd. I object not at all to cookbooks that are infused with the author's personal stories and flair. But this one, I'd rather just have the recipes. The recipes are remarkably good, mostly quite simple to prepare, and well-written. I use them all the time.
I just pretend that the hokey over-the-top bonhomie of the authors isn't there. Mind you, this is only because I think in person, I wouldn't like them very much. But I like their food a lot, so I just focus on that.
Three Guys from Miami Cook Cuban.......2007-05-17
Being of cuban desent and growing up next to my grandmothers kitchen I can say that this book is an excellent guide to true cuban cusine. I especially liked some of the different version that were put into the book on different dishes. Well worth the money.
A must have for Cuban cooking.......2007-03-31
This is a great book for Cuban cooking. It is also great for other (non-Mexican) South American recipes. Having lived in another South American country, I see many recipes that are familiar. I HIGHLY recommend this book to all who love to cook or eat Cuban food. You will not be disappointed!

New entities have been added to many chapters, particularly those on brain trauma, stroke, infections and inflammations, and the orbits.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent basic text.......2007-08-05
This book is unique in providing a basic overview of all areas of neuroradiology. The book also provides important guidelines for the performance of a number of procedures. For a single text covering the fundamentals of neuroradiology, appropriate for medical students, residents, fellows, and for board review, Castillo's "Neuroradiology Companion" is superb.
Great Book.......2007-07-10
This is one of the better of the series. Provides a good coverage of major topics without all of the confusion of the Requisites Neuroradiology, which I don't personally like.
Great introductory read.......2003-07-29
This is a very readable book on neuroimaging. Nicely divided into sections eg- trauma, tumor, head and neck, etc. Good quality images. Short bulleted text with some key facts on the opposite page makes for a quick read. Would be very good for a junior resident to go through early in their training to get acquainted with some of the more common diseases. I think it is unlikely that one would be presented with a case at the oral radiology boards that is not found in this text. Still, this is not a substitute for reading a traditional neuroimaging text such as the Mosby Handbook series or the Requistites series sometime during residency.
Just like in the in-service exam!.......2003-06-10
This is a short, inexpensive (especailly for neuroradiology) book that I found quite useful. The images are remarkably similar to the ones on the Neurology RITE. And, there is a short section on key facts in bullet form for each common neurological disease described. Additionally, the book even has info on imaging protocols and guidelines. No MR spect, but is otherwise pretty good. Has nearly 550 images!
very informative book.......2001-04-28
This book has helped me with my knowledge of neuroradiology. i like this book very much and the best part of it all are the pictures, which are very clear. i am aldo very happy to report that the author is my uncle.
Book Description
"A delightful novel...impossible to resist."Barbara Kingsolver, Los Angeles Times Book Review
Sofia and her fated daughters, Fe, Esperanza, Caridad, and la Loca, endure hardship and enjoy love in the sleepy New Mexico hamlet of Tome, a town teeming with marvels where the comic and the horrific, the real and the supernatural, reside.
Customer Reviews:
Untroubled.......2007-08-04
Just a little background of New Mexico's history and you will be ready to understand why the connection of the people to the land is different from those of other Native Indians. 'So far from God' shows how having moved away from the land of their ancestors, people fail to connect to it in the same way as their predecessors.
Although it deals with serious issues, it does not fail to make you laugh out loud when weird things happen to Sofi's children and she's still one piece. And all this when you thought you were beginning to feel pity for Sofi beset with troubles for children.
Delightful "Magical Realism" Novel.......2006-04-18
Hugely entertaining! Castillo does an excellent job of bringing to life the images of the Southwest. I grew up in Texas, and have traveled extensively through the Southwest. Castillo's book and its vibrant characters feel like "home" to me (even though I'm not Hispanic). Definitely a "must-read"!!
So Far From GOOD!.......2006-02-16
This novel was required for an English Writing class, and I must say that the novel serves no practical purpose what-so-ever.
By the novels end I was left wondering to what intention the author had in mind, but more-so to what reason did readers have to keep reading? Life is short and time is valuable, and so I only choose to read novels in which something can be gained. Okay, life is not always fair, yet the show must go on...got it. But this novel's all-too-obvious moral comes at a painfully high price; one must leave their common sense on page nineteen, only to find the storyline to be too dark, too dramatic, and a tad too driven by blind faith.
The absurd storyline is only surpassed by the countless missed opportunities to offer readers something real, something tangible, something useful. Basically anybody can write a piece of nonsensical overkill, but who has the want or the time to read it?
So Far From God, more like So Far From Good!
Thinly Disguised Attack on Catholicism.......2004-11-22
I read this book as a part of a Chicano Literature course during my undergrad studies. While I found the first 140 or so pages okay, I found the overall story a bit boring (educational, but boring). Lest you think I am being unfair, let me note that the story did pick up again at the end and I do not recall ever having fallen asleep while reading it. (2 stars so far)
I really liked the use of language in creating the voice of the narrator. It gave me the feeling that I was sitting with an elder aunt or grandmother who was telling the story to me. (Make it 3 stars, bordering on 4).
So, why the 1 star? Mainly because I did not like what I interpreted to be a thinly disguised attack on a straw man version of Catholicism and I can't rate it a zero.
I found many of the incidents in the story and especially the commentary of the narrator to be very critical of Catholicism. I find it unfortunate that, like most critics of Catholicism, Castillo critizes/attacks a straw man version of Catholicism rather than the real thing. In an interview the author was asked about fact checking in works of fiction (specifically in her book "Massacre of the Dreamers"), Castillo answered:
"No. There isn't any point in it. It's your opinion. It's your reflection, your reaction, your own opinion. When you write a critical -- and this isn't personal essays, these are critical essays -- then you have to prove ever single thing you say."
Maybe that's why she chose to attack a straw man rather than the real thing.
The Poetry of Life and the World Beyond............2004-06-10
Ana Castillo truly takes us for an unforgettable trip as we take a glimpse into the lives of Sofi, a Chicana woman, and her four daughters, Esperanza (Hope), Caridad (Charity), Fe (Faith), and La Loca (The Crazy One). The story reads like an epic parable about life, death, sexuality and the bridge between the world of the living and the afterlife. It also raises very important questions about the division between heaven and hell and whether is really such a bad place after all in comparison with the life that we come to accept.
Each woman in this story is touched by fate in unexpected, and (sometimes) supernatural ways. While Esperanza, the successful, upwardly mobile sister acts on her name and is relocated to Iraq as part of her journalism work, her sister Caridad becomes a faith healer, Fe loses her voice after a fit of desperate screaming, and La Loca cheats death as a young toddler only to become the subject of social scrutiny in their community as an isolated loner with a sixth sense only understandable to her mother, Sofi.
This book is truly enjoyed when you suspend disbelief and just go with the supernatural and magical elements. SO FAR FROM GOD is true poetry, and also very important in cultural studies. It was assigned to me in a comparative literature class through the department of American Ethnic Studies with the following books: The Grass Dancer, A Lesson Before Dying, Ruby Ridge, and Homebase. (Books also worth checking out!)

Go Cuban with no experience necessary.......2007-05-04
Lots of color-drenched photos of the food, the ingredients, the authors and the place enliven this party approach to Cuban cooking. The authors begin with deserts - Mango Upside Down Cake, Pumpkin Flan - before moving on to drinks (Pina Colada).
Each recipe includes banter in the margins from the three authors. Occasionally there's a nugget of useful advice, but mostly these can be skipped. While there are some rich and elegant dishes (Shrimp in Cilantro Cream Sauce, Cuban Style Lobster), the guys tend to feature mostly casual traditional (Spanish Bean Soup, Rice with Seafood, Roast Pork, Fried Shredded Chicken) cooking.
The basics are here - Black Beans and Rice, Mashed Plantains, Empanadas, Tamales - and there's a chapter on grilling which includes seafood and meat kebabs. Those who've wondered what to do with guava jelly will find plenty of opportunities here from Baby Back Ribs with Guava Sauce to Guava Cake.
The recipes are straightforward and mostly simple so that even those with no experience of Cuban food can go tropical without fear
