Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Would you believe that nutmeg formed the basis of one of the most bitter international conflicts of the 17th century, and was also intimately connected to New York City's rise to global preeminence? Strange but true: nutmeg was, in fact, one of the most prized commodities in Renaissance Europe, and its fascinating story is told in Giles Milton's delightful Nathaniel's Nutmeg.
The book deals with the competition between England and Holland for possession of the spice-producing islands of Southeast Asia throughout the 17th century. Packed with stories of heroism, ambition, ruthlessness, treachery, murder, torture, and madness, Nathaniel's Nutmeg offers a compelling story of European rivalry in the tropics, thousands of miles from home, and the mutual incomprehensibility which often comically characterized relations between the Europeans and the local inhabitants of the prized islands.
At the center of the action lies Nathaniel Courthope, a trusty lieutenant of the East India Company, who took and held the tiny nutmeg-producing island of Run in the face of overwhelming Dutch opposition for more than five years, before being treacherously murdered in 1620. To avenge his death, and the loss of the island, the British took the Dutch North American colony at Manhattan. (As Milton wittily remarks, although Courthope's death "robbed England of her nutmeg, it gave her the biggest of apples").
Inevitably inviting comparisons with Dava Sobel's Longitude, Nathaniel's Nutmeg is a charming story that throws light on a neglected period of European history, and analyzes its fascination with the "spicy" East. --Jerry Brotton, Amazon.co.uk
Book Description
A true tale of high adventure in the South Seas.
The tiny island of Run is an insignificant speck in the Indonesian archipelago. Just two miles long and half a mile wide, it is remote, tranquil, and, these days, largely ignored.
Yet 370 years ago, Run's harvest of nutmeg (a pound of which yielded a 3,200 percent profit by the time it arrived in England) turned it into the most lucrative of the Spice Islands, precipitating a battle between the all-powerful Dutch East India Company and the British Crown. The outcome of the fighting was one of the most spectacular deals in history: Britain ceded Run to Holland but in return was given Manhattan. This led not only to the birth of New York but also to the beginning of the British Empire.
Such a deal was due to the persistence of one man. Nathaniel Courthope and his small band of adventurers were sent to Run in October 1616, and for four years held off the massive Dutch navy. Nathaniel's Nutmeg centers on the remarkable showdown between Courthope and the Dutch Governor General Jan Coen, and the brutal fate of the mariners racing to Run-and the other corners of the globe-to reap the huge profits of the spice trade. Written with the flair of a historical sea novel but based on rigorous research, Nathaniel's Nutmeg is a brilliant adventure story by a writer who has been hailed as the "new Bruce Chatwin" (Mail on Sunday).

A Connecticut Nutmegger.......2007-09-15
I call it 'Connecticut Nutmegger' because like the nutmeggers, who were peddlers from Connecticut who would sell small carved nobs of wood shaped to look like nutmeg to unsuspecting customers, Milton tries to sell us his book as a special look at an interesting piece of 'history.'
Here is a story that should be fascinating. (One of my favorite books is "Salt: A World History"). Milton's inept handling of the writing makes it a long and boring read. It seems to be one sea voyage following another. Milton likes to end every paragraph with quotations from the original reference, in the difficult language and grammatical construction of the time; complete with the strange spelling. This slows the reading down considerably. It took me several tries to understand that by 'Pooloway' and 'Poolaroone' he was talking about Pulau (Indonesian for Island) Ai and Pulau Run.
While we don't learn anything about how native populations responded to the European conquerers or what the natives thought of them, we do get a true feeling for the evil and sadism of these colonists, both British and Dutch.
Why the book is called "Nathaniel's Nutmeg" is a bit of a mystery, except that a British factor spent several years on Run Island fighting the Dutch. He seemed to have very little to do with the discovery, cultivation, or promotion of the spice, but Milton chooses him as the hero of this story. We don't even meet Nathaniel Courthope until half way through the book and he is a rather pitiful hero, who admittedly steals from his own company. It is true hyperbole to try to convince the reader that Nathaniel is a 'spice trader who changed the course of history."
All in all, with good editing this book could have been written in 200 pages. It is a hodge podge of information about European sea voyages to the South Pacific looking for spices and why economically they mattered so much. Milton covers the venality of the VOC (Dutch East Indies Company) and British East India Company extremely well. But he never proves his case that Courthope was someone who changed the course of history.
Still with all this fascinating data at hand, Milton forces the reader to suffer through his poor writing style. A style, which detracts from the immensely interesting story of the 17th century spice trade.
I have added an extra star to my review; because, had I not read this book, I would never have known of the little island of Run.
Enlightening, gripping.......2007-06-27
An energized look into the harrowing spice race of the seventeenth century.
Spices were a valuable commodity during this time period, especially nutmeg which was allegedly the panacea for the plague and other medical ailments. Nutmeg grew only on one tropical island and it was called Run.
The author diligently takes the reader through the cut-throat competition between the English and Dutch for possession of not only Run but also other Spice Islands. Some chapters are very descriptive of torture and mistreatments of prisoners and may not be for the squeamish. Nonetheless, the rivalry between these two countries is taut, fierce and intricately detailed.
I, like a few reviewers, fail to make the connection between the author's leading character Nathaniel Courthope and the ultimate land exchange fifty years later of Manhattan for Run Island. Maybe it is a declaration of Courthope's courage and determination to quell Dutch uprisings for four years which eventually led to the land swap five decades later (?)
A good read, and above all a most informative study of these contested times.
Full of information!.......2006-06-09
It's a short book jam packed with characters and voyages. I have to say though that I could have used a time line in the begining to help me keep things straight. Reading this book takes focus (not the kind of thing you can read when you're tired or watching TV at the same time) but I enjoyed learning so much about the spice trade!
Making History Appreciated Again.......2006-06-01
I am not into history books and I find many are filled with lousy presentation of facts - making it a very dry read. It is not the case here. Milton had successfully made reading history fun and helps you grow an appreciation for the things and people around you and beyond. This book will make you laugh, cry, and cetainly, appreciate the spices in your kitchen :)
Excellent History.......2005-10-30
Giles does a wonderful historical job in telling a complicated story, but not getting in the way of the history by invoking his views as most historians do.
This book should honestly be one of the required reading books as it literally sets the entire stage from Columbus to the birth of the American nation. It explains the almost mad dash the European powers made in making the most brutal of wars on natives and on each other that carried on to the American Revolution.
It is a very easy read which is a page turner that pleases one in teaching you without lecturing.
The only thing which puzzled me is his choice of title in Nathaniel as while he was a brave and a fine officer he is not a major part of the book. That though is Giles choice and the book deserves 5 stars.
Book Description
Listed by Abraham Lincoln, alongside the Bible and Pilgrim’s Progress, as one of the books that most influenced his life, few true tales of adventure and survival are as astonishing as this one. Shipwrecked off the western coast of North Africa in August of 1815, James Riley and his crew had no idea of the trials awaiting them as they gathered their beached belongings. They would be captured by a band of nomadic Arabs, herded across the Sahara Desert, beaten, forced to witness astounding brutalities, sold into slavery, and starved. Riley watched most of his crew die one by one, killed off by cruelty or caprice, as his own weight dropped from 240 pounds to a mere 90 at his rescue. First published in 1817, this dramatic saga soon became a national bestseller with over a million copies sold. Even today, it is rare to find a narrative that illuminates the degradations of slave existence with such brutal honesty.

Great and rapid service. Book was exactly as promised. We will definitely use this seller again.
Slavery and Racism from the Eyes of a Shipwrecked White-Man.......2007-05-09
Travel back to the mindset of the early 19th century, when racism was the rule and God was thought to intercede on the behalf of white men shipwrecked in the midst of savage brown men. The first few chapters are hard to believe. However, if you assume that James Riley is honestly recounting what he believes happened to him, the story exposes the background of racist, Eurocentric, and religious bigotry that soaked American and European thought of that era.
Despite the difficult to swallow constant referrals to the general color of skin of each an every character Captain Riley encounters, as well as his unbelievable description of "savage" Africans as "orangutan-like" beasts, the book is a compelling read that you will not be able to put down. While Riley never overcomes his racism towards the darker Africans, the story reveals a transformation in his estimation of Arabs and Muslims which is instructive in our present era where Arabs and Muslims are denigrated and misunderstood.
If you love a book you cannot put down, this is the book for you.
Book Description
Phantom creatures, alien encounters, grizzled heroes, and maidens in distress were the staples of the golden age of pulp art. These colorful characters are the stars of this exciting visual tour of a once-thriving popular art form. Divided into four categories — science fiction, mystery, horror, and western/adventure — the book features a wealth of magazine covers and other pulp fiction images by such legends as Edd Cartier, Frank R. Paul, Walter Baumhofer, and others who brought monsters and maidens to appreciative audiences from the late 19th century into the mid-20th. Pulp collector Frank M. Robinson offers context and history for these campy, over-the-top images from a long-vanished era.

PLEASE note size of book.......2007-03-20
Smaller than a postcard; overly tight binding makes skimming impossible; particularly poor gallery of bad, uninteresting covers. I give it one star because, for no reason I can imagine, it's well scanned and printed. But it's easily the least interesting collection of pulp art I have ever seen; I've seen a lot.
Any with an interest in pulps will find it a worthy reference indeed.......2006-08-06
There are so many places The Incredible Pulps: A Gallery Of Fiction Magazine Art could have been featured: in our art section for fans of magazine art, in our literary section for readers of magazine fiction - but it's featured here for the added interest collectors will have. Full-page color photos pack a small collection which sometimes holds several covers per page. While there are no accompanying values, the reproductions are stunningly rich in color and any with an interest in pulps will find it a worthy reference indeed.
GORGEOUS PULP COVER ARTWORK!.......2006-05-27
Pulp magazines were long gone before I was even a gleam in my father's eye and yet they have always held a tremendous fascination for me and are one of the very few things I collect today. The great thing about collecting pulps is that while many range into the thousands of dollars, many more such as the Sci-Fi pulps of the 50's are very affordable. "The Incredible Pulps: A Gallery of Fiction Magazine Art" focuses on one of the main reasons that people collect pulps...the incredible artwork, particularly those covers that just had to have mesmerized kids and adults back in the 30's and 40's.
Writer Frank M. Robinson (who also wrote the very excellent Pulp Culture) provides a brief, but enlightening history of pulp magazines, beginning with Argosy Magazines decision to move from slick magazine, to all-fiction pulp. One of the great things about pulps is that they virtually could appeal to any person due to the diversity of subject matter. The pulps covered it all: crime, mystery, western, romance, adventure, war, horror, Sci-Fi, sports...if it had a possible audience, there was probably a pulp to suit them. But perhaps the most popular were the hero pulps featuring characters like The Shadow, Doc Savage, and The Spider. The popular misconception was that the pulps were written by hacks but some of the great writers of the first half of the 20th century wrote for pulps, among them: Edgar Rice Burroughs, Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Ray Bradbury, H.P. Lovecraft, and Frederick Faust AKA Max Brand.
But this book is not about the stories, but rather that beautiful, often terrifying and downright shocking artwork. The artists are as legendary as the writers: Virgil Finlay, J. Allen St. John, George Rozen, and Frank Kelly Freas to name just a few. It was their job to create covers that would grab the attention of readers in a very crowded and competitive market. Today their works are worth thousands and many of them are on display in this great collection.
The book reprints hundreds of pulp covers and is divided by four main genres: Sci-Fi, Horror, Mystery/Detective, Adventure/Western. The book provides the name and date of the issue and the artists name if known. Tragically, so many of the artist names have been lost to history. The covers are reprinted beautifully and seemingly from flawless copies of the pulp. Frank Paul was one of the very early greats and did many classic covers for Amazing Stories in the 20's and 30's. He was a man well ahead of his time and his imagination was limitless as his paintings foreshadowed many technical advances that would not take place for decades. J. Allen St. John is best know for his Tarzan illustrations but a great cover in this book features Burroughs' other great character John Carter of Mars from Amazing Stories January 1941, for the story John Carter and the Giant of Mars.
My favorite pulps have always been the horror and weird menace pulps. So gruesome were some of the covers that the government eventually had to step in and force the publishers to clean them up a bit. One great cover is by Grave Gladney for Dime Mystery August 1937, showing a woman about to be sliced in half by a very large paper cutter.
George Rozen may be my favorite pulp artists of all-time. His Shadow covers were beautifully sinister. The cover to Shadow January 1933 is one of the all-time great covers showing a skeletal shadow emerging from behind a curtain. You think gore is a product of modern times? Then check out Rudolph Relarski's cover to Thrilling Detective from August 1940. It shows a table full of decapitated heads and a man locked in a stock, about to be the next victim of an evil Asian's sword. The book reprints numerous Rozen Shadow and Doc Savage covers.
It's really a great little book that anyone who is a pulp or pop culture illustration fan will love. I do have a couple of minor complaints though. First, there are no cover reprints from Weird Tales, arguably the most famous pulp ever. I can only assume that since Weird Tales is still being produced that perhaps the rights could not be obtained. Since there is no Weird Tales covers there are no examples, and not even a mention of Margaret Brundage, one of the truly great pulp cover artists. That aside, I highly recommend this book.

Revival in Argentina.......2005-01-31
Revival has been sweeping the world on a scale unprecedented in the history of the Christian church. Nations on every continent have been experiencing a tremendous outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Marvelous though the revival is in America, in Britain, and many other nations, nowhere are the revival fires burning hotter than in South America, and in particular, in Argentina.
In The Rising Revival, you will learn:
* the factors that have caused the Argentine revival to last much longer than most revivals of the past
* how a man with a sixth grade education became the leader of a national revival who has brought over
one million people to faith in Christ
* how thousands of people who were demon-possessed have become free
* how the city of Resistencia, formerly one of the most unresponsive cities to the gospel in the nation,
has become synonymous with city-taking all over the world
* how Argentina's many evangelical churches of a wide variety of denominations, for years ridden with strife
and division, are now enjoying a degree of unity unprecedented in the history of their country
* how this revival has emphasized deliverance, the breaking of curses, and identificational repentance,
in which believers identify with their nation or people and repent for their sins on their behalf
* how the focus of this revival has been on winning the lost, not just bringing revival to believers
A very inspiring read!

Must reading for those seeking the truth!.......2001-06-04
I got a copy of the Rising Revival with genuine openness to the present progress to the revival that has been going on in Argentina since the 50s. After reading the book, I was convinced that something is terribly wrong with what is going on there. The message was clear, but somehow people are reading this book without picking up the strong clues. Example: "Never before has the occult thrived and proliferated in Argentina as it has in recent years. Deeply entrenched in some rituals of the Roman Catholic Church, the occult has multiplied through sects and new religious movements, especially among the spiritualist Afro-Brazilian cults and Afro-Caribbean cults and within most of the indigenous religion of Latin America." The Rising Revival, p. 81 If this is what the present emphasis on Spiritual Mapping, Spiritual Warfare, etc., is bringing to Argentina, do we really want to import the same thing to different countries all over the world? Hundreds of thousands of demons cast out of people and a revival of the occult? What's wrong with this picture? In Christ, Rev. Greg Robertson, Jakarta, Indonesia
"When God's People Start Prayin"ÿ.......2000-01-13
I found this book to be inspiring and illuminating. Not only does this book explore the revival sweeping the land of Argentina through the instruments God has choosen to use, but it also gives the reader practical application for partnering with God to bring revival to other parts of the world. As a personal fan of Wagner, I find this book to be one of his greatest. With collaboration from other writers Wagner gives insight on how to keep the "fire" burning and how to keep the "fire" growing. I challenge all non-believers and strict dogmatic christians to "taste and see that the Lord is good" in the Rising Revival!
Inspiring stories of revival happening NOW!.......1998-08-15
The Rising Revival is various accounts of what has been happening (and still is) in Argentina. Each of the 12 chapters is written by a different pastor, so you get 12 different testimonies of God's mighty hand in salvation, signs and wonders. This book inspires me to believe the same things can happen in the U.S., and shows what can happen when people not only believe God's Word, but act on it.
Book Description
The extraordinary story of the exiled Tibetan teenager who has been hailed as one of the greatest spiritual leaders of the coming age.
In January 2000, an Ambassador taxi twisted its way up the narrow road leading toward Dharamsala in the Himalayan foothills of northern India-the home in exile of the Dalai Lama. In this aging car was a fourteen-year-old boy: the 17th Karmapa, one of the most important figures in Tibetan Buddhism. The boy's arrival in Dharamsala was the culmination of an escape. He had journeyed nine hundred miles across the Himalayas, in conditions of high danger, far from the monastery in Tibet where he had lived since he was eight. His arrival took everyone by surprise: far-flung devotees, the world's press, the Chinese government, even the Dalai Lama himself, who was reminded of his own escape into exile more than forty years earlier.
Fascinated by this charismatic young figure, British writer Mick Brown traveled to Dharamsala to meet him and found himself drawn into a web of intrigue. Amid a feud of Byzantine complexity concerning the boy's succession, Mick Brown gained unique access to both sides. In The Dance of 17 Lives, the author reveals what he uncovered: tales of miracles and murder, the settling of two-hundred-year-old scores, and the enduring spirit of Tibetan Buddhism in the face of all adversity.

Just so boring.......2007-07-22
I really liked "Spiritual Tourist" but this book was *yawn* just one long newspaper article about all the groups that hated and connived against each other. I found nothing inspiring or interesting and grew horribly tired of trying to remember who the 14th Tai Sitapu was, etc. It was a waste of time and energy.
I found a great deal of misinformation contained in this book.......2007-07-14
I am not a Buddhist but I have been interested in the controversy. The author is a journalist but he does not present a fair or balanced view of the controversy. He is steeped in favoring Ogyen Trinley Dorje in his write up whether he discusses the meetings he had with each of the two Karmapas or the rumours of their births etc. Try "Buddha's Not Smiling" instead although he has his own point of view I found him to be more credible in his presentation of the facts surrounding the controversy.
kagyu review.......2006-12-15
fellow kagyu brothers: please read rogues in robes, by tomek lehnert before buying. karmapachenno.
A great new teacher's story.......2005-09-19
Perhaps we assume that the great religious teachers have all passed away, or are decrepit old men isolated on mountain tops. Buddhism, particularly the Tibetan variety, tells us that there is a transmission of the teachings that is alive in men and women today. And it is even possible that, in some sense at least, the famous teachers of the past are litereally alive with us today.
If you find that possibility interesting, or if you just enjoy a good true life story, then I strongly recommend this book. It describes the history, teachings, and current life story of the Karmapa, head of one of 4 main schools of Tibetan Buddhism, and the possible successor of the Dalai Lama as the spiritual leader of Tibet. The legacy of the Kamapas, from their first appearance in the twelveth century, to the dramatic escape from Chinese control of the 17th Karmapa 5 years ago, is inspirational.
There are many juicey aspects to this story; political intrigue, battling supporters, intelligence agents. Also, the 17th Karmapa is notably handsome.
But the real story is this 20 year olds' astonishing maturity and composure. Is he literally the reincarnation of the Karmapa? Whatever. But he is certainly a gifted teacher and is the representative of one of the great spiritual traditions of all times. And he is accessible today.
I want to thank Mick Brown for telling the Karmapa's story with sensitivity and care.
A well written book about an incredible story.......2005-01-08
I read this book in late spring or early summer 2004, and the impact that it had on me is still present as we move into 2005. The dispute over the actual Karmapa aside, the story is thrilling and shows how some people can rise to achieve holiness while standing side to side with others who fall into the depths of deceit. The journey of this young man is breath-taking, and his assent to Karmapa and escape into India is thrilling. This is a great book for anyone on any sort of spiritual journey, or for anyone interested in Buddhism. It seems clear, from this book, that Urgyen Trinley Dorje is the true 17th Karmapa. A great read!!

Part of the Amazing Stories series.
Book Description
Exiled Chilean writer Ariel Dorfman chronicles the crimes of Augusto Pinochet, the former dictator of Chile. He begins with the 1973 U.S.-supported coup that brought Pinochet to power and the devastation it caused in Latin America, and follows the story through Pinochet's arrest and detention in London, where he awaits extradition to be tried on charges of genocide.
Customer Reviews:
Essential reading.......2003-12-30
This is essential reading for anyone wanting to comprehend the crimes of Pinochet and the complicity of the United States government. As is always the case with Dorfman's books, it is beautifully written.
Exorcising Terror: The incredible unending trial of Augusto.......2003-08-29
This book is basic to understand from a personal perspective how the chilean people suffered under this animal regime. It shows how all bullies, those who get theirs kicks hurting other human beings become pathetic cowards when they are asked to pay for their acts.
A good synopsis of the trial of Pinochet.......2003-06-24
One should keep in mind that this is a personal and political view of the Pinochet case. The book is good in the fact that it is a personal account of a man who had friends who are among the disapeared of Chile. If you are interested in a personal account than by this book, however if you are interested in an acccount of Pinochet policies by a book exclusivly about his regime.
ignore the above review.......2003-03-04
Although Dorfman's views of the years of dictatorship are driven as much by emotion and opposition as they are by fact, his book about the Pinochet regime and the subsequent human rights trial serves as an interesting document to the chilean experience of dictatorship.
The true extent of the horrors that occured in Chile may never be fully known but Dorfman's book about his experience of the dictatorship and his emotions as a Chilean is an essential document to the Chilean healing process.
Some of the passages are extremely well written and the end of the book in particular raises some intersting questions.
There are without question finer books concerning the period, but this is the most emotional work available and Dorfman's lament for Chile is at times very powerful.
Ja, ja,ja, ja,ja........2003-02-25
Another of Dorfman "Masterpieces". This is the same guy who wrote how Donald Duck was an instrument of American Imperialism. (Yeah, really).
Dorfman is one of those Allende-Orphans who still believes everything that happened in Chile was because of this really, really bad man named Pinochet. Him, Allende, the left, the guerillas, did nothing wrong. The book is just a reflection of such a biased view.
I'm glad to be the first one reviewing this book. It means few are paying attention to this clown-author.

Book Description
Today the average meal has traveled thousands of miles before reaching the dinner table. How on earth did this happen? In fact, long-distance food is nothing new and, since the earliest times, the things we eat and drink have crossed countries and continents. Through delightful anecdotes and astonishing facts, Moveable Feasts tells their stories.
For the ancient Romans, the amphora---a torpedo-shaped pot that fitted snugly into the ship’s hold---was the answer to moving millions of tons of olive oil from Spain to Italy. Napoleon offered a reward to anyone who could devise a way of preserving and transporting food for soldiers. (What he got was the tin can.) Today temperature-controlled shipping containers allow companies to send their frozen salmon to China, where it’s thawed, filleted, refrozen, and sent back to the United States for sale in supermarkets as “fresh” Atlantic salmon.
Combining history, science, and politics, Financial Times writer Sarah Murray provides a fascinating glimpse into the extraordinary odysseys of food from farm to fork. She encounters everything from American grain falling from United Nations planes in Sudan to Mumbai’s tiffin men who, using only bicycles, carts, and their feet, deliver more than 170,000 lunches a day.
Following the items on a grocery store shopping list, Murray shows how the journeys of food have brought about seismic shifts in economics, politics, and even art. By flying food into Berlin during the 1948 airlift, the Allies kept a city of more than two million alive for more than a year and secured their first Cold War victory, appealing to German hearts and minds---and stomachs. In nineteenth-century Buffalo, the grain elevator (a giant mechanical scooping machine) not only turned the city into one of America’s wealthiest, but it also had a profound influence on modern architecture, giving Bauhaus designers an important source of inspiration.
In a thought-provoking and highly entertaining account, Moveable Feasts brings an entirely fresh perspective to the subject of food. And today, as global warming makes headlines and concerns mount about the “food miles” clocked by our dinners, Murray poses a contentious question: Is buying local always the most sustainable, ethical choice?
