Book Description
America's health care system is unraveling. Every day, millions of hard-working people struggle to find affordable medical treatment for themselves and their families—unable to pay for prescription drugs and regular checkups, let alone hospital visits. Some of these people end up losing money. Others end up losing something even more valuable: their health or even their lives. In this powerful work of original reportage, Jonathan Cohn travels across the United States—the only country in the developed world that does not guarantee access to medical care as a right of citizenship—to investigate why this crisis is happening and to see firsthand its impact on ordinary Americans.
The stories he brings back are tragic and infuriating. In Boston, a heart attack victim becomes a casualty of emergency room overcrowding when she is turned away from the one hospital that could treat her. In South Central L.A., a security guard loses part of his vision when he can't find affordable treatment for his diabetes. In the middle of the prairie heartland, a retired meatpacker sells his house to pay for the medications that keep him and his aging wife alive. And, in a tiny village tucked into the Catskill mountains, a mother of three young children decides against a costly doctor's visit—and lets a deadly cancer go undetected—because her husband's high-tech job no longer provides health insurance.
Passionate, illuminating, and often devastating, Sick interweaves these stories with clear-eyed reporting from Washington and takes us inside the medical industry to chronicle the decline of America's health care system—and lays bare the consequences any one of us could suffer if we don't replace it.

A compelling read.......2007-10-14
This book is a great read, that yet again, puts a much needed human face on our health care crisis.
Good reading.......2007-08-16
I needed to read this book for a class I was taking. But, it was not a chore to read at all. It was very informative and gave me answers to questions I had regarding the health care situation here in the United States. The book is very easy to read and I could hardly put it down. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about the health care crisis.
Right on Target.......2007-08-09
This book just begins to describe the issues with our health care system. The for-profits skim the lucrative services from the "not-for-profits", leaving us all with the tab. We are all subsidizing the for profit entities and paying their dividends.
Do people really think the US Government does not control the US healthcare system now? Medicare and Medicaid represent over half of hospital and physician payments and everything else is heavily regulated by the US government now! We have a government run and controlled system now and it is operating poorly!
Good convincing argument for reform.......2007-07-16
SICK by Jonathan Cohn is, thankfully, one of many books coming out these days about problems with our health care system in the United States. The style of the book is brilliant, since in the first eight chapters Cohn carefully examines various aspects of health care and uses case studies of people who fall through the cracks to illustrate problems that exist. As this book explains, we have excellent medical facilities in the U.S., but the terrible problem is that many people are denied consistent access to those facilities. Many of the people Cohn uses as case studies die because of lack of access. He provides enough detail about those people to make you see them as real people and thus to empathize with their plights, yet he also provides quite a lot of "technical" detail about health care. If, on the other hand, Cohn had focused totally on the technical aspects and policies, he would have lost everyone but the policy wonks. And if he had focused totally on personal stories, the book would not have been educational enough. Instead he strikes a very good balance between the two.
Another neat balancing act that Cohn performs involves solutions to our health care crisis. SICK mainly examines the situation with our health care system, and is not mainly about solutions. There are other books out there focusing more on that. Cohn deals with solutions only in the last chapter, which runs 17 pages. In that space, he clearly advocates a government-run universal health care system. He holds up France as a good model to emulate, where he says there is universal coverage, quick and easy access to care, and overall better results than we get. And yet the French pay far less than we do for health care, as does everyone else in the world! Cohn could have devoted more space to his proposed solution (maybe in a sequel?), but I believe his method of focusing on problems will convince more people of its prudence, since many Americans are opposed to more government intrusion in health care. Everyone who reads SICK must surely conclude that SOMETHING must be done to seriously reform health care in the U.S. If there is some better answer than government-run universal care, what is it, and why hasn't someone done it already? The burden of proof is on the nay-sayers.
Let's not panic and create a new American health care crisis.......2007-07-11
The author argues for single tiered universal health care - probably government administrated. As both a middle class consumer and a retired surgeon I agree (don't we all) that our medical insurance system needs fixing. But let's consider this further: Are the people of this nation really willing to pay for great health care for everyone? It won't be cheap. In the past 15 or so years Americans have shown that they want first-rate services, but have not been willing to vote for tax increases to cover them. By contrast, many of the European Countries that are cited as having successful healthcare financing systems have notably higher taxes.
So what are we really likely to get? At minimum a two-tiered system - the wealthy and the rest of us. Do we want that? If not, how many tiers are acceptable and who should administer them? The federal government? The private insurance companies?
So far the nationally-administered systems in this country have manifested several weaknesses. The MCARE system is a highly regulated system, setting prices, frequency of service, deciding the criteria for who can receive what treatment, how long a patient can stay in the hospital and much more. About 15 years ago, to contain costs, HCFA coined the phrase "the best the system can afford" and has since continued to reduce MCARE reimbursement, hospital stay length and covered services. MCAID is even more subject to economic pressures, and a quick review of its history shows that Congress has consistently balanced their budgets by cutting MCAID. Most recently, Congress passed a pharmacy reimbursement bill which prevents MCARE from negotiating pharmaceutical prices, a standard HMO practice.
In the short run patient's may be getting a bargain, but many of the finer physicians are opting out of being MCARE providers, or leaving practice because of the low compensation and heavy regulation that inteferes with their ability to effectively treat patients. And among those that are staying in practice, more and more doctors are choosing to provide non-covered services such as plastic surgery or diet counseling and products, creating a shortage of physicians in many areas.
Finally, contrary to popular belief, MCARE is a tiered system, in that it requires a monthly premium (which some can't afford), and allows for purchase of a secondary insurance (that many more cannot afford) to cover the required copayment.
We all know that conventional insurance has many of the same weaknesses and consequences. So what now?
I think a satisfactory system is developing through the efforts of state politicians that are working to design complex systems to meet a multitude of health care needs. This has spurred a dialogue that is highly educational and, I believe, over time will result in multi-tiered systems that will; provide a variety of choices for those that can afford health care coverage, eliminate discrimination against folks with pre-existing conditions and aging bodies, and fund a respectable level of health care (that can't be reduced by a budget-stressed Congress) for those who can't afford health care coverage.

As a result of extensive research into the role of water in the body, the author, a medical doctor, believes that he has found chronic dehydration to be the cause of many conditions including asthma, allergies, arthritis, angina, migraine headaches, hypertension, raised cholesterol, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, depression, and diabetes in the elderly.
According to Dr. Batmanghelidj, the body possesses many different thirst signals. A dry mouth is not a reliable indicator of your body's water needs. He describes a variety of more reliable ones, and helps you learn to understand when your body is calling for water. In this way, he claims you can prevent, treat, and cure a variety of conditions of ill health, at no cost, with what he calls nature's miracle medicine: Water. The author explains how much water one needs to drink a day to stay healthy, and why tea, coffee, and sodas are not good substitutes for water.
Book Description
For the first time in medical history, F. Batmanghelidj, M.D., has identified the crisis calls of the body for water --pain, asthma, diabetes, hypertension, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, and more. He has discovered the key to a longer, healthier, and more vigorous life. He shares with you his medical breakthrough that many people put their minds and bodies under intolerable and unecessary stress and become sick simply because they do not drink enough water. Unintentional dehydration leads to illness and painful, degenerative diseases that can be prevented, treated, and cure by drinking plenty of water.
You will learn how to use water to:
* Prevent and reverse premature aging
* Eliminate pains including heartburn, back pain, arthritis, colitis pain, anginal pain, migraine headaches
* Cure asthma in a few days, naturally and forever
* Cure hypertension without diuretics or other medication
* Lose weight effortlessly and naturally, without strict dieting
Customer Reviews:
The book has nothing more to offer than its title!.......2007-10-08
I was so disappointed in this book. The author spends more time haranging doctors and insurance companies than providing useful insights on water usage. He sounds soured to the industry and the only meaningful thing I found he had to say was in the title. For those of you who haven't bought the book, just read the title, its free and great advice! Drink water!! Yes!!
Too technical.......2007-08-27
The book was filled with very good information, however, unless you're in the medical field or somewhat familiar with medical lingo, I would not recommend this book. This book is filled with 98% medical jargon and reasons our bodies need constant replenishment of water and 5% of actual information on what we can do about it. I can summarize the book in this sentence and save you money "drink plenty of water, even when you're not thirsty. Years of dehydration can and may be taking a toll on your body".
How to get healthy without a lot of meds.......2007-08-08
This book explains in fairly non-technical terms how water is used in the body, brain, circulatory system, etc. I never realized how important it was to drink plenty of water. This author makes it abundantly clear. My new water-drinking regimen has also helped me lose 5 pounds without really trying. Terrific book. Chapters on diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. Anything the reader is concerned about in terms of health. Truly informative.
yikes.......2007-07-23
Like others have said, over drinking water can make you sick. It forces minerals out including potassium which can make you constipated. The book fiber menace suggests unnatural water drinking (when not thirsty) is a cause of chronic constipation. Too much water can also cause general overhydration problems which are many (edema, sodium problems). According to some you need at most 4 8 oz glasses of fluid a day (that includes even diaretics like cucumbers and coffee) unless you are sweating a lot - some suggest food alone can cover this amount. See:
http://www.snopes.com/medical/myths/8glasses.asp
We have a thirst mechanism for a reason. We are animals not robots. If you are sick or old, then water intake should be monitored not just for dehydration concerns, but because you wouldn't want to drink too much in that state. The body and its thirst mechanism have been serving humans well for millions of years - long before $cience came along.
Your Body's Many Cries for Water.......2007-05-19
This is an excellent book. It may be a bit too technical for some.
I would refer them to " You're Not Sick, You're Thirsty."
I do not agree with him that tap water is an acceptable form of water. Then again, this book was written in the early 1990's.
Book Description
Why do some people find and sustain hope during difficult circumstances, while others do not? What can we learn from those who do, and how is their example applicable to our own lives? The Anatomy of Hope is a journey of inspiring discovery, spanning some thirty years of Dr. Jerome Groopman’s practice, during which he encountered many extraordinary people and sought to answer these questions.
This profound exploration begins when Groopman was a medical student, ignorant of the vital role of hope in patients’ lives–and it culminates in his remarkable quest to delineate a biology of hope. With appreciation for the human elements and the science, Groopman explains how to distinguish true hope from false hope–and how to gain an honest understanding of the reach and limits of this essential emotion.

The wisdom of hope .......2007-09-30
In July 1975 Jerome Groopman entered his fourth and final year of medical school at Columbia and joined the surgical team headed by Dr. William Foster. The first patient he encountered was an Orthodox Jewish woman who had lost over one- hundred members of her family in the Holocaust. She was suffering from a very advanced case of breast- cancer. In speaking with her Groopman learned that she had been ill for a long time, had felt pain for a long time but had reported it to no one. She was reluctant to tell him why, but at some point in the course of the treatment she let him know the answer. She felt herself to be a sinner because of untoward thoughts towards her employer. She felt that her illness was a punishment and therefore deserving. Despite her having three children and a husband she was living in total hopelessness. She resisted treatment and in a relatively short time , died.
This incident raised in Groopman's mind the whole question of patients' attitudes, and what part they have in the physician's treatment. He began to sense that this was a neglected area of study and that physicians were not properly trained in fully understanding their patients.
In another case- history later on Groopman working as an assistant for a dedicated physician saw that his employer's technique was to conceal from terminal patients the bitter truth- in order to let them enjoy as best they could the remaining time left. However in one instance concerning a mother and daughter in which the mother was terminally ill, the concealing of the information turned out to be insulting and humiliating to the daughter. Groopman understood from this incident that coddling patients with false hope was also a mistaken way.
In still another incident Groopman saw a doctor- friend of his who all the physicians on the case advised to no longer take radiation treatments as his situation was completely hopeless. The patient insisted on continuing with the treatment and had a remarkable recovery , a 'cure' in which the cancer completely left his system.
In still another case- history Groopman speaks about a courageous patient who without fear rationally evaluated her situation at every stage, was totally realistic in her evaluations, had hope for her recovery and also because of her religious faith, hope for the world- to- come.
In another important instance Groopman talks about his own twenty - year struggle with pain and how he was cured not by a medical treatment but by the wise recommendation of a physician who taught him to move in spite of and against the pain.
All these cases taken together make for complicated understanding of the relation of 'hope ' to 'recovery'- and are valuable not so much because of pointing to some simplistic conclusion and moral but because they show not only the complexity , difficulty, of treating and contending with serious illness but also how central human attitude and wisdom is in facing life's most difficult tests.
A must for any professional in the field of oncology.......2007-09-09
An excellent account of an oncologist's own experience, during his multiple years of training and practice, with a description of actual cases and how the different outcomes of these cases changed the author's approach and understanding of patients with serious and terminal illnesses -mostly cancer-.
This book is the product of the author's emotional journey through understanding how differently patients react to their own diagnoses and circumstances, and why physicians have to treat patients individually, and not as cases of this type or another type of cancer.
It is clear from the stories, that he realized that many patients do not want to hear about statistics, they don't want to know their possibility of survival in 5 years or 10 years in percentages, because all human beings hold on fast to hope, and this is what makes them survive in some incredible cases.
As a physician myself, I recommend this book to all medical students, all students of oncology, and professonals in the field. Please, don't forget that the last thing that a patient loses is hope, and in a background of truthfullness, try to help them hold onto this last resource, which may benefit their immune systems in the struggle against the disease.
Fascinating, Humbling, Inspiring, Educational.......2007-07-13
The Anatomy of Hope is an excellent book that will shock, humble and inspire you. So many books in this genre are thinly-veiled attempts by the authors to push forward their particular view of life (or perhaps more accurately, their view on how life should be led), and quickly become preacher-like and boring. This is not one of those books. It is filled with grim realities, interesting academic observations, tie-ins to what has become the author's take on life and how those facing serious health issue might cope (again, without lecturing), and, in some cases, NOT cope. If nothing else, reading this book will open your eyes to the unbelievable crises a lot of people on this planet face every day, and if you are not one of them, will (should) make you feel very humble and very grateful. On the practical side, the book is inexpensive and a very easy, quick read. Buy it. Although some of the talking heads who do reviews for a living have managed to find areas of the book to criticize (SURPRISE!), you are not going to regret dedicating a few hours of your life to this really incredible narrative. The Anatomy of Hope: How People Prevail in the Face of Illness
Enjoyable.......2007-07-11
I like the way Dr. Groopman writes and have always enjoyed his pieces in the New Yorker. This book was no different.
Medicine for the human spirit.......2007-06-09
This is a powerful and illuminating book. It's aim is to reveal and chacaterise the place that hope has in giving patients the will to put themselves through sometims painful therapy or to survive the dark times of illness; to keep going against odds. Groopman is a very intelligent, observant, self-reflecting practitioner, and he has learnt deeply from his mistakes and successes. The book is beautifully written, and is full of gripping and insightful stories about patients and doctors. It's a stirring call for medical practice which goes well beyond mere evidence and professional, technical expertise - embracing the wholeness of the patient in all its complexity.

Book Description
Every day modern medicine announces the arrival of yet another “wonder drug” or “miracle procedure” to a world increasingly wary of expensive high-tech cures. Drugs, transplants, and surgery don’t work for 90 percent of our aches and pains and, while we are grateful for life-saving developments, we know that most come with risks that we ignore at our peril.
Long hailed as one of the founding fathers of mind-body medicine, Larry Dossey directs our attention to simple sources of healing that have been available for centuries—treasures often hidden in plain sight—from the power of optimism and of tears to speed recovery to the surprising usefulness of dirt and bugs in curing disease and infection to the benefits of doing nothing.
Exploring the medical research that validates these simple remedies, Dossey encourages us to align ourselves with the wisdom of nature and allow true healing to take place. The Extraordinary Healing Power of Ordinary Things can transform our view of what health is all about, whether our concern is cancer or the common cold.

I Felt like I was with my Grandmother!!.......2006-03-17
Thank God for Larry Dossey!!
As I sat at my grandmothers' feet, many years ago, she told me of the importance of the subtle world around me. She ministered to people struggling in various ways in the back-woods of West Virginia in the early nineteen hundreds. She learned medicine from her grandmother. Her life was rich with stories of healing and her love of nature.
Larry Dosseys' voice in the world is long overdue!
Dr Dossey shows us what is truly important.......2006-02-14
In the spirit of Aristotle and Thoreau Larry Dossey provides compelling and stimulating answers to the eternal question - "what is truly important in life?" At a time when we seem increasingly confused by complexity, speed and continuous change this book reminds us that the important things in our lives are timeless and simple.
As befits the title Dr Dossey writes with simple elegance. The essays are lucid, well-reasoned, practical and frequently moving. Indeed I experienced the rare feeling that I was receiving genuine wisdom, and was being shown the path to a joyful and meaningful life through paying attention to the small things. So I recommend that the reader learns the principles in this book and takes "route one" to health and happiness
Another Outstanding Contribution from Larry Dossey.......2006-02-14
Physician, writer and editor Larry Dossey has been an important voice in medicine for more than two decades.
In his previous books and papers he has articulated an emerging vision of medicine which goes far beyond a simple mechanical view of the body, and emphasises a model that also addresses the emotional, spiritual and timeless aspects of our lives.
In this book he incorporates and expands upon some of the insights of the burgeoning field of positive psychology. One of the most attractive things about this new work is that he also emphasises the importance of apparently "negative" experiences. I have pointed out in my own work that we need to understand the importance of duality, balance and personal integration: To recommend positive thinking can be disastrous for some people, for whom pessimism and negative cognitions are their natural defense styles. Similarly, there are some people who get sick once stress is over. And the constant drive to boost self-esteem has created many people with narcissistic and sociopathic personality traits. In the same vein, Dossey also points out the importance of bugs, tears, dirt and an occasional a bit of unhappiness for our overall well-being.
This is a book that should be widely read and the principles applied in all our lives.
Highly recommended!

Book Description
One day Raymond Francis, a chemist and a graduate of MIT, found himself in a hospital, battling for his life. The diagnosis: acute chemical hepatitis, chronic fatigue, multiple chemical sensitivities, and several autoimmune syndromes, causing him to suffer fatigue, dizziness, impaired memory, heart palpitations, diarrhea, numbness, seizures and numerous other ailments. Knowing death was imminent unless he took action, Francis decided to research solutions for his disease himself. His findings and eventual recovery led him to conclude that almost all disease can be both prevented and reversed. In Never Be Sick Again, Francis presents a seminal work based on these findings - a revolutionary theory of health and disease: there is only one disease (malfunctioning cells), only two causes of disease (deficiency and toxicity), and six pathways to health and disease (nutrition, toxins, psychological, physical, genetic, and medical). This remarkable book answers the questions: What is health? What is disease? Why do people get sick? How can disease be prevented? How can it be reversed? It will teach readers, in one easy lesson, an entirely new way to look at health and disease - an approach that is easy to understand, yet so powerful that they may, indeed, never have to be sick again. Providing a basic understanding of health and disease, this book takes the mystery out of disease. It provides readers, no matter what their present physical condition, a holistic approach to living that will empower them to get well - and stay well.

ok.......2007-05-21
If you're already familiar with the basic ideas in alternative health, I doubt you will find anything new here. Eat a clean diet, do exercise, get a good amount of sleep, take the right supplements etc. The author starts by relating his own health crash, and how he pulled himself out of it, so there's no doubt his heart is in the right place, but most of the book was familiar information to me. Could be a good introduction if you are just finding out about alternative health ideas, and how the philosophy differs from mainstream medicine.
Inspiring, Fascinating, and Helpful.......2007-02-23
I've been on strong asthma medications for a long time. I started getting every side effect they list, and being that one of the medications was black boxed in '05, I had to get off them. My blood pressure would drop as I stood up, and my resting heart rate was always going too fast. My severe allergies would trigger the asthma, but the medications would only close my lungs up more. As a kid every type of food would make me feel sick, and as a result.. I just never ate very much at all. Now... its still the same thing. Doctors found I have hypoglycemia and a gluten-intolerance. There were days I was so sick I couldn't get out of bed at all. I went to doctor after doctor looking for a cure and never found it. An endocrinologist even said that I have anxiety disorder and need to be treated with medication. A dietian didn't listen to me, and prescribed a diet that made me severely worse. I've had almost every medical test imaginable, and they could never conclude anything. I would go to bed at 6pm and wake up at 10am, and I could just never get enough sleep to feel better. I kept having nightmare after nightmare.
This book provides all the answers I've been searching for years to find. I took the concepts in this book and gave my body the nutrients I never gave it. I saw great improvement the next morning. I could take deep breaths without the medication... I didn't even sneeze during the middle of the night! I couldn't eat fruit without having an asthma attack because of it... now, I'm able to eat a serving of low-glycemic fruit everyday and be completely fine. My deteriorating health, I know now, can be completely turned around. I am only 22 years old, and now I know... I can live to be 120 and live the rest of my life without sickness. This book is a true blessing, and I'm extremely grateful to the writer!
This book is worth it.
Never Be Sick Again.......2007-02-02
Never Be Sick Again offers a major breakthrough in medical thinking regarding health and disease. I am a biochemist doing medical research at UCLA. A friend gave me this book to read, and I was very skeptical. After reading it, I couldn't stop thinking about what it was saying. I even lost sleep thinking about it. After many weeks, I have come to a conclusion - the author is right. There is only one disease and there are only two causes of disease - revolutionary! Once you understand this simple concept, it changes everything. If your mind is not closed to new ideas, the profound insights in this book will change your life for the better. It will give you the power to both prevent and reverse almost all disease. With this new understanding, from now on, I will approach my research in an entirely different way.

One of The Best Books On "Real" Health.......2006-07-23
This is one of the best books available on what is truly involved with being healthy and not the fake information we've contantly been fed. Any negative review on here isn't valid because it's apparent that these people are not informed on the real ways we can be healthy, rid disease, etc. The person below talking about their friend can't blame the book. If you do anything involving health incorrectly, you can become more sick. You also should never just follow one book or opinion, but look up the various research & resources available to everyone, that backs it up. If you aren't familiar enough with how to take control of your own health, which often takes a lot of research and training, then you need to work with others that can assist you, ask lots of questions, etc. But in the end it's all worth it because will you rarely be sick or have to go to doctors. Think of the time and money you will save later by taking care of your health in the proper way now.
Be careful and skeptical.......2006-04-12
I am a proponent of organic foods and products -- most of the products (food, cleaners, toiletries, etc) I buy are organic, and I know that contributes to my health. And the medical community is finally realizing that the overwhelming amount of white sugar, white flour and processed foods in the Western diet has led to an epidemic of obesity, heart disease and diabetes in this country. No disagreement there. (Atkins and the South Beach Diet say the same).
But be very careful about going overboard in accepting all of what this book says. A friend of our family gave us a copy of this book to read. This friend has become religiously devoted to this book's advice and outlook on health. He has become self-righteous about the health 'knowledge' he has gained from it, to the point of insulting the people around him (co-workers, friends) who have any kind of health issue by telling them that it's because they don't eat right.
Well, the proof is in the pudding. I saw this friend recently, and I seriously did not recognize him: he looked sickly, deathly thin, very pale, with sunken cheeks and eyes. Prior to getting into this book, he was very healthy and normal looking.
I don't know if this change for the worse is because of the book itself, or because he is going way overboard with its advice. But some of the negative reviews match my impressions I have gotten of the book based on our friend's 'testimony' and attitude, and now, even his sickly appearance. So beware!
Book Description
DENTAL MANAGEMENT OF THE MEDICALLY COMPROMISED PATIENT is an up-to-date, concise, factual reference describing the dental management of patients with selected medical problems. The book offers the dental provider an understanding of how to ascertain the severity and stability of common medical disorders, and make dental management decisions that afford the patient the utmost health and safety. Medical problems are organized to provide a brief overview of the basic disease process, the incidence and prevalence of the disease, pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, laboratory findings, currently accepted medical therapy of each problem, and a detailed explanation and recommendations for specific dental management. The accumulation of evidence-based research over the last few years has allowed the authors to include more specific dental management guidelines in the sixth edition.

Horribly out of date now.......2007-04-17
This book may have been okay when it was published but using it as a text in 2007 is a big mistake my instructor really regrets. There are many other guides that are lower in price and have more concise and up to date information available. Do not waste your time with this one. Many of the descriptions are ambiguous and hard to follow.
Most used textbook during my residencies!.......2004-02-06
This was an invaluable book that I only glanced at a few times during dental school, but during both my hospital based-general practice residency and pediatric residency was my constant guide. It provides both medical and dental management for most encountered problems that patients present with and has lots of great quick reference tables!
Excellent reference for dental practitioners.......2003-07-15
This text has become the standard reference and source of definitive information for dental management of medically compromised patients. It serves as the textbook for Oral Medicine in many dental schools and offers practitioners valuable insight into care for acutely and chronically ill patients.
A must read for dental professionals to update vital info!.......1998-03-26
Every working and instructing dental professional should readthis text concerning medically compromised patients. It updates, aswell as reviews, the important topics that are seen every day in private practice. Especially important is the areas of TB, HIV, and diabetes, although recent information may need to be added by the practioner (check out internet sites for these). Introductory tables are a must for reference in a clinical situation. I have used it a reference text in my clinical practice and in my continuing education courses.
Book Description
Sick and Tired? presents the revolutionary theories of Dr. Robert Young, a scientist who passionately cares for his work concerning how foods positively and negatively affect the body. This book provides a comprehensive view of Dr. Young's research and ideas, and is a wonderful tool to helping anyone start on the road to once again reclaiming good health.
Customer Reviews:
this book should be in everyones library.......2007-07-06
Dr.Young certainly has written a book that helps set matters straight.
Well researched, well written and able to lead people out of the confusion we call "health advice".
I've read books on health for over 30 years, and there have been many
that stood out from the pack -but this, i feel, is above all others as
He has based his research and practice on a solid foundation -unlike the
allopathic and (to a good degree) the naturapathic systems. I wish i had ordered more as my friends all want one.
Sick and Tired - Reclaim your inner terrain.......2006-07-08
Excellent, well written, easy to understand. Once you know, you can't not know any more!
Is Acid the Cause of Your Problems?.......2006-03-01
I have read this book and I do not agree with it. Certainly eating vegetables is a good way to go and will help you lose weight- no doubt about it!
However, the author cites acid as the cause of all of our ills and diseases. Let us take a good look at that. Ascorbic Acid, you know Vitamin C, which is said to be the closest thing to cure the common cold. Guess what that is an acid.
Linaus Pauling, a real doctor, not what that got his degree online at some school that he can not reveal, used to take up to 15,000 mgs a day of ascorbic acid. Did it kill him, no he lived into his nineties, over twenty years longer than the average man. So much for acid being bad.
And the stomach what is that composed of? HCL, Hydrochloric acid, and if it did not, you would not be able to digest your food. Also that acid, destroys bad bacteria, parasites and yeast.
In addition to this there are other acids which we need to survive on, such as Amino Acids, which are in every protein you eat. Also I am sure you heard of Essential Fatty Acids, Omega 3's. Scientists will tell you they are some of the best things to eat, and are essential to the body.
The bottom line is the authors credentials are dubious at best, and he should have stuck to what is true in his book. That is that vegetables are the best thing for you and will help you lose weight and get healthier!
Cleansing your body.......2005-09-07
I totally agree with dr young's view on yeast and fungus, I have seen it with myself at only 23 and feeling sick and tired and with no energy. I managed to research the sick and tired feeling after going to the doctors for many years and being told I have a virus!!
I started on an anti candida diet 7 months ago after working out that years on antibiotics and contraceptive pill, sweet tooth, alcohol and smoking have caused my yeast and fungal to take over my body, I have felt much better but not totally, so when I came across supergreens and the ph miracle I believed it was the answer to feeling 100%.
From reading other people's stories there is too much evidence to say that this does not work!!
I'm not sure thought why people are amazed at the weight loss as it is obvious that eating more veg and cutting foods from your diet, you will loose weight!
I think the way this diet tackle disease is amazing, and I really believe that the way we treat our body and the foods we eat will have a great role in our health and well-being! Its having the motivation to eat right, but when you start to feel better this is what makes it much easier to carry on.
I am yet to start the strict diet, am waiting for my supplements to come through, but I'm feeling better from drinking the supergreens with the ph drops!!
I can't wait to feel my best!
WHERE did he go to school?.......2005-07-24
He claims to be a doctor and names degrees, but not schools. I e-mailed his website and asked them where he went to school. They didn't give me a straight answer, but told me to do a "biographical search". Why would I need to do that? Why bother to answer me if they couldn't just name a school? I still couldn't find his alma mater.
He got his "degree" from an online course, I'm now told.
I've seen his videos - he doesn't come across as being very bright. I was surprised, until I found out that he isn't really, truly a doctor the way he would have us believe.
I'm no doctor myself, but I know the human body is made up of various channels and conduits and systems. Some are supposed to be slightly alkaline; others slightly acidic. It's a delicate balance and if you really want to learn more about it, you might try a legitimate source like Dr. Susan Lark or Dr. Andrew Weil. Acid is not "bad"; what would we do without amino acids (proteins), for instance, ascorbic acid (vitamin C) or deoxy-ribonucleic acid (DNA)???
I'm no dummy, either, but I fell for this book until I found out more about the man. He is not to be trusted. And I wouldn't be saying this if I couldn't stand behind my statement 100%.
Book Description
About 50% of all people with schizophrenia and manic-depression do not understand that they are ill and refuse treatment.
Whether you are a family member or a therapist, in this book you will find hope in what the new research is revealing about the problem of poor insight into illness.
Prepare to be surprised and to have new hope. There is much you can do to conquer denial.

Not just for schizophrenia sufferers!.......2007-08-27
This book has helped me immensely. A loved one suffers from an impairment in his thought process and this book has given me the tools to communicate with him effectively and lovingly.
Insightful.......2007-08-11
The book helped me to understand the thinking process of one who has serious mental illness. It helped equip me with the negotiating skills to be able to help.
I am not sick I don't need help.......2007-07-03
Top-notch book to learn about mental illness, and how to deal with it with friends/family.
Outstanding book needing a better copyeditor.......2007-05-29
When my son was given a 14-day hold at a psychiatric hospital, I looked for books that would help our family be helpful to him when he was discharged. There are many excellent books on mental illness, but I have found none as helpful as this one for family members who need practical tools for talking with and caring for a delusional person. As a bonus, the writing style is very engaging. However, the edition I have appears to have been rather poorly copy-edited. This is rarely any bigger problem than a mild annoyance; for example, if an article is omitted or repeated, it is easy to guess what was actually intended, and your eye just glides over the mistake. But some of the copy-editing errors are more substantial. On page 90, the text reads: " 'I am so afraid that they're going to come and hurt me,' describe insomnia and paranoia stemming from a delusion. However, the words insomnia and delusion never need to be part of your discussions." I am guessing that the second appearance of "insomnia" in that excerpt should be "paranoia". (Certainly my son has never objected to talking about insomnia...paranoia is another matter.)
To sum up: Great book, needs a new edition with a better copy-editor.
For concerned caregivers.......2007-04-06
This is a great book for those who find themselves dealing with someone in denial of an illness. It really can be any illness, not just mental illness. Some of the information is specific to mental illness but the communication skills are universal. It is an essential read for those who are in danger of crossing the line from loving caregiver to frustrated caretaker. There is a big difference and this book helps you to recognize that while providing the tools to support your difficult task. I highly recommend it.

A great book for EMT's to be.......2007-10-11
This book shows you step by step on how to perform the duties of an EMT. From the legal issues, to the parts of the body, to patient assessment, to death, this book covers all the necessary topics of what EMT's will do on a regular basis. No matter how much training an EMT will get, they will not be prepared for every situation they encounter, but this book is a good tool to gain the knowledge on how to deal with most emergenices. It explains in detail and shows helpful pictures of things that are needed for one to know for the EMT course. Also there are questions at the end of each chapter to test you on the material you just read. I highly recommended this book for anyone who plans to become an EMT or just wants to learn about emergency patient care.
Everything you need to know to be an EMT-B.......2007-03-27
It has many illustrations, in depth anatomy coverage. However, sometimes there's critical scenarios that are past over very quickly, and you might not think it's important. Also, there should be some NREMT sample questions at the end of each question.
The EMT book that could.......2007-02-20
So the book came in good condition. It works for me and is great for learning from. Might I mention it is a text book so if your looking at buying it then you probly have to buy it anyway.
Excellent, but short of goal..........2006-08-04
This book and DVD is probably the best written text for EMT-B there is. Take the time (a lot!) to read it thoroughly. It does miss the mark if you solely rely on it to take the National EMT-B test: press your instructor's for the many detail's not in this book that are on the test if you want to pass!
Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, Ninth Edition (Purchased on 01/11/2006).......2006-03-03
