Book Description

Today, there is a great deal of emphasis on the mystical and intangible nature of relationships but very little emphasis on the real, practical steps involved in building an enduring love. In contrast, authors Ben Young and Sam Adams place great importance on the value of spiritual compatibility in Devotions for Dating Couples.

Designed especially for highly committed or engaged couples, it helps readers:

  • Understand and avoid the most common barriers to spiritual growth
  • Have an increased desire for fellowship with God
  • Share and explore spiritual issues together
  • Pursue godliness, personal relational health, and wholeness
  • Each of the nine sections includes Scripture quotations, suggested meditation passages, and discussion questions, as well as anecdotes from real people including the authors. Intended as an eight-week study, weekday devotions are to be completed by both individuals, and each weekend study is to be completed together as a couple.

    5 out of 5 stars Great study!.......2006-03-17

My Boyfriend and I are almost through this study, and we have learned a lot about God, and about each other through it. It is great doing something like this together and being able to keep each other accountable. I recommend this to any dating couple who wants to grow closer to God and to each other!

5 out of 5 stars What we expected.......2006-03-16

While some complain about the lack of depth in conversation questions, I would call it an opportunity for free discussion. Because the questions are rather general, one feels much more free to allow the conversation to wander from the original topic, providing more insight into the beliefs and backgrounds of your dating partner.

As far as the format, there is simply nothing else out there. We looked hither and yon for an individual bible study with weekly couple components. This is it.

    3 out of 5 stars A non-threatening primer.......2006-01-29

My girlfriend and I were trying to find a book that would just help us get in the habit of doing devotions together and praying together, and for the most part, this book did the trick. While some of the topics covered will seem old-hat to people that have been raised Christian or been Christian for years, they sometimes serve as a nice "refresher course" - something every Christian needs now and then.

Overall, I felt this book was very non-threatening, and a good way to accomplish the goal we were trying to meet. If you're looking for a way to introduce devotions in to your relationship without making it seem like a chore or a source of conflict, this book is a good bet.

    4 out of 5 stars Dating Devo.......2005-10-18

My girlfriend and I are just finishing this devo up this week and I must say that I have really enjoyed it. My girlfriend and I have gotten many hours of discussion and learning from the book. I kind of agree with other reviewers that it can be simplistic but it is the beauty of it as well, and we say it as more of a guideline for more discussion which is why whenever we got together to go over the questions we were discussing for hours. I would recommend this to any couples as a good first devo together and then maybe moving onto devotionals that go deeper.

    5 out of 5 stars Digging Deeper...Together.......2005-07-16

This book has been amazing. My boyfriend has gone to church all his life and I started in 7th grade, we're now Freshmen in college, but we've know eachother for about 6 years and have been dating now for 2 years. I have always been slightly intimitated by his praying and his knowledge of the Bible but this has really opened up lines of communication that have enabled us to dig deeper and to honestly want to encourage eachother in our quite times as well as keep accountablity. Some of the Saturday discussion question have really allowed us to be real and to trust in eachother on a whole other level. We are still working on the book but it has already helped us to continue in our desire to glorify God in our relationships both with one another as well as others around us and to also hit home base on some topics that are never discussed. I'd recommend it but make sure that you pray about it and that it is something that God wants for the BOTH of you to do. :)

Many books have been written about William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge that cover their biographies and make critical assessments of their work. In Adam Sisman's The Friendship, for the first time the bond between these two poets is given center stage. The friendship flourished in the aftermath of the French Revolution. The poets met in 1795 when both were in their early twenties, two young idealists disappointed by the lack of expected change in their world following the revolution. They wanted to write a poem that would change the world, that would be accessible to all and would fire the imagination of the most humble. This desire led to the publication of Lyrical Ballads, the beginning of the English Romantic movement, which included Coleridge's "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and Wordsworth's "Tintern Abbey."

How did their friendship affect their work? Sisman shows the ways that their bond created competitive tension and fueled their creativity to even greater poetic achievement than might have been achieved alone. The political and social situation of the time was very influential on them, as well as their individual families and romances. They were passionate in all regards, reaching great heights and great depths of feeling. Ultimately, the two men became estranged, and then effected a tenuous reconciliation--one much talked about among their friends and acquaintances, because they had both become famous. Although Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy despaired of Coleridge, believing that he would never stop drinking and taking opium, and though their professional differences came to separate them, while they collaborated they created poems of great beauty, encouraging one another to reach lofty heights in the realms of literary expression. For these two, for a glorious time, the whole was greater than the sum of its parts. --Valerie Ryan

    Book Description

The story of the legendary friendship between Wordsworth and Coleridge

The friendship between William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge produced dazzling results. From it came Lyrical Ballads, the volume that kick-started the Romantic Movement in England. Rarely have two such gifted writers cooperated so closely. They met in 1795 when both were in their early twenties, and in the euphoria of mutual discovery these brilliant and idealistic young men planned a poem that would succeed where the French Revolution failed—a poem that would, quite literally, change the world. In this wonderfully lively and readable account, acclaimed author Adam Sisman explores their passionate and tempestuous bond and the way in which rivalry bred tension between them. Though much has been written about this extraordinary duo, no previous biographer has considered them together. The result offers insights into the rich yet neglected topic of friendship and tantalizing glimpses of the creative process itself.

5 out of 5 stars Our literature benefited from this friendship,,,.......2007-08-07

It's been a long time since I picked up a book on literature that I loved as much as this one. I originally had a major in English Literature, and spent four years of studying most British writers, with an emphasis on the poets and the prose of the time from John Donne to the end of the 19th century. I loved the British romanticist that included both Coleridge and Wordsworth, but I didn't realize how deeply entwined their lives were, and how much their poetry owed to this friendship of theirs.

This book brings to life the poetry they wrote and their relationship during their time together. Two different men who placed such a deep importance on literature to change and effect society. We seem to have lost our respect for the ability of words to heal, even though now we know they can do deep harm whether in music or literature or conversation. These two men lived at a time when life was changing from an agrarian society to one that depended upon industry and many were leaving the land and going to cities to find work. The time period also saw the Revolution in the U.S. and then the one in France, and many British were hoping to see changes in politics and other parts of life, in which people would have more say and more freedom. Unfortunately, the French Revolution did not proceed the way that many expected it to, away from t he monarchy and towards freedom, but it fell in on itself probably because of the violence. It left a very bad taste in the mouths of young men like Wordsworth and Coleridge, who hated the violence that the Revolution spawned.

These men wanted to see a return of man to his roots, to understanding and admiring and valuing the natural world around them. They felt that a simple life without dependence upon things or money was of more worth than the lives so many led in the cities or towns of England and other European countries. I think these two men would be horrified at how far we've left behind the simple life and our dependence upon material things has led towards endangering the natural world that we live on. These men were actually early ecologists...

This book was extremely poignant and sad, mainly because Coleridge like many in the early 19th century was introduced to laudanum, an opium drug, that was used widely as aspirin is used now. It was not understood how addictive it was at that time period, though as Coleridge aged he knew he depended too much upon the drug and on alcohol which was their primary drink of that time period because water was considered unsafe. This addiction caused him to lose not only his family and his friends, but Coleridge's ability to write was lost as he became more addicted and sick due to the drug. It was amazing that he lived as long as he did, and it was due to the care that others took of him including Wordsworth and his sister. It must have been horrible for those who loved him to watch his descent into addiction and to watch him lose his great abilities. It was devestating to him and to his ego to lose his brilliant mind and ability to write, and left him jealous of Wordsworth, who was unable to help his friend.

This is an equisite book looking into the relationships of these two poets and their lives. It brings back a time long lost both in England and in the U.S. where we put as much emphasis on the ability to write well, and society paid more attention to men of learning and ability than to sports heroes and celebrities of little worth...

3 out of 5 stars The Friendship: Wordsworth and Coleridge.......2007-04-08

A somewhat disappointing read...expected more and earlier in the narrative on the individuals...covered somewhat towards the end of the book but disappointing in the brief treatment of the...Opium addiction of Colridge and Dorothy Wordsworth...the sexuality of Dorothy Wordsworth her brother and Colridge...religion and Colridge...Godwinism and the infulence it had on this/these relationship(s)...the conflict between Southy and Coleridge...Dorothy Wordsworths and Sara Colridges hostile relationship...homosexuality...etc.

All these conditions are well know to readers of the Lake Districk Poets and would have added texture and fabric to the story of literatry colorbation between these two major Poets instead of being left for a generalized dicussion at themend of the book.

5 out of 5 stars A friendship which helped bring into being great poetry .......2007-02-23

Collaboration between poets is a rare phenomenom. Perhaps the most notable instance in the history of English poetry is that between William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. For a brief period of time they worked together and helped inspire each other to new levels in their respective work. In this examination of their collaboration the dramatic center of this work is the annus mirabilis , the brief time of their working together which led to the publication of 'The Lyrical Ballands'in 1797.
The 'Lyrical Ballads' are the great manifesto of English Romantic poetry. They contain the critical preface in which Wordsworth famously defines poetry as "the spontaneous overflow of powerful emotion recollected in tranquillity." They contain some of the finest poems in the English language including Wordsworth's 'Tintern Abbey' and Coleridge's masterpiece 'The Ancient Mariner'Sisman explains how Coleridge did much to contribute to Wordsworth's creation of his great poem. Wordsworth supplied two - thirds of the poems and received the thirty guineau payment for them. Wordsworth concentrated on the more simple natural presentations and Coleridge on the supernatural and fantastic.
Both of the poets were to in these early years produce their finest work. Wordsworth went on to staid respectability, to being the Poet Laureate to fifty years of producing relatively uninteresting and mediocre verse. Coleridge's great poetry writing period also did not last long either.
Sisman provides a great deal of political and social background to the friendship especially around the Radical Politics they both shared in their youth. He also tells the story of how Coleridge and Wordsworth moved away from and become disenchanted with each other in their later years.
For all lovers of Poetry this volume should be an incredible treat.

4 out of 5 stars The best dating book.......2007-03-31

A friend loaned me this book when I was single and I could not have been more thankful to her! This is really an easy read and a gives you a little internal soul searching and changes that need to happen in your life for God's best to come to you.

    5 out of 5 stars A must-read for quality young people!.......2006-11-10

I had to read this book, the 10 Commandments of Dating, for a college psychology class recently, and it was such a good use of my time! The authors don't beat around the bush--they say it like it is, which makes for a very insightful and comical read. If every person my age would read this book, I think there would be a lot less broken hearts, before AND after marriage. Find out for yourself! I am certainly putting the commandments to use already.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite book on relationships. .......2006-10-09

"10 Commandments of Dating" is my favorite book on dating/relationships. It teaches you the basics from Getting a Life & be ready for others to finding the right one with confidence. Best of all, each chapter is short and concise, making them fun and interesting. Every chapter also includes pros & cons and what to do if you already break the commandment. These 'commandments' all seems like common sense and self-explanatory but the truth is, when someone is in "love", nothing can get in his/her ways, so their judgement is clouded, making them regret later on in life.

Honestly in my opinion, it's better to stop or slow down your current relationship and start reading this book before you are clear and sure to move on. You may find your current partner incompatible even though both of you claimed to be, "in love" with one another. In short, this book basically serves as warning signs, checklists, guidelines and self-help that will guaranteed success in dating.

If you learn nothing from this book, then either you're a genius and should be proud of yourself for being perfect or you're just denying your own mistakes, which is foolish by itself. All in all, this book is excellent and a must read. Even though the author Ben Young is a Christian, he doesn't talk much about theology or Christian beliefs that often, so even non-religious people can read it with ease, without being offended. The bottomline is, this book is worth every penny, every second and every effort reading it. I finished it in less than two days. It's THAT good! Almost every page is highlighted that it looks like a yellow Post-It. The only string attached is, you must practice and obey these commandments to your life in order to have successful relationships. There may be exceptions here or there, but 99.9% of times, you will succeed.

Two of my other favorite books are: "If You Really Loved Me" by Jason Evert and "Waiting and Dating" by Myles Munroe. Hope this helps! Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars A must read for singles that never have sucess in dating!.......2006-08-01

A very Christan based book on dating in the new era. A return to basics and being moralistic when it comes to courtship. I am presently applying this principle at dating at age 40! wish I had read it at age 20! Maybe I would not have spent 9 years married to an incompatible jerk. It seems to be working and I am having fun dating just as friends and really getting to know someone without the pressure of getting physical. If the guy does not believe in these moral principles then he is not worth my time. Thanks for such an insightful book that I plan on using as a stocking stuffer for all my still single girlfriends.

    5 out of 5 stars Dating God's Way.......2006-05-04

Ben Young (M.Div., currently directs one of the country's largest singles ministries and also hosts the national radio show, "The Single Connection") and Dr. Samuel Adams (Psy.D., a licensed psychologist) have teamed up to produce a compelling, truthful, biblically based self-help treatise to help singles navigate the often murky waters of dating. "The 10 Commandments of Dating" is a direct, sometimes harsh (as truth can be) guidebook that stresses how to make the dating period a time of discernment so you can choose your marriage partner wisely - "Commandment Ten: thou shalt choose wisely."

Christians and non-Christians will surely benefit from the common sense that flows page after page. It has become painfully obvious that common sense is not so common as the divorce rate hovers above 50%. Bullet point summaries at the end of each chapter are quite concise and lucid in compressing the chapter's message of why the aforementioned commandment is important to follow.

"Commandment Four: thou shall take it slow" is an often difficult one to obey in our want-it-done-yesterday New York City minute culture. But true love like vintage wine does take time. The authors Young and Adams provide the effective metaphor of bonding your relationship to the act of building a toy model car. "First, build the engine; then wait a day for it to dry. Next, build the chassis, and wait another day for it to dry. After that, add the wheels and then glue the parts together." You can guess what the next step would be. The process of building a toy model car like building a relationship takes time for the various pieces to bond appropriately. But what happens when we do not delay gratification and "give the glue enough time to dry"? One consequence could be, "You risk entering into a marriage and then one day waking up to see a stranger lying beside you."

"The 10 Commandments of Dating" does not shy away from tackling issues such as living together before marriage ("Commandment Seven: thou shalt not play house") or pre-marital sex ("Commandment Six: thou shalt save sex for later). This slim tome will inevitably raise objections, denial, anger and a host of varied responses as one's "truth" shall be tested and perhaps (if one is honest) exposed as a lie. Following the apologetic's instructions will save singles from pain and heartache. But it will also encourage you to sow correctly during your dating season and therefore reap the blessings of a compatible mate thanks to following God's immutable laws as clearly expounded by Adams and Young.

    Book Description

Samuel Adams is perhaps the most unheralded and overshadowed of the founding fathers, yet without him there would have been no American Revolution. A genius at devising civil protests and political maneuvers that became a trademark of American politics, Adams astutely forced Britain into coercive military measures that ultimately led to the irreversible split in the empire. His remarkable political career addresses all the major issues concerning America's decision to become a nation -- from the notion of taxation without representation to the Declaration of Independence. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams all acknowledged that they built our nation on Samuel Adams' foundations. Now, in this riveting biography, his story is finally told and his crucial place in American history is fully recognized.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars An inspirational account of one of our greatest founders.......2007-09-13

Compared to the other fundamental founders, hardly any primary sources remain of Adams since he wasn't preoccupied with his place in history and didn't save documents and correspondence. As such, Samuel Adams: Father of the American Revolution is a short read, but is a relatively concise and well-written account of his political life. Adams himself was extraordinary, and after reading this book, it's easy to see that he is exceedingly underappreciated as one of the greatest American revolutionaries. Adams is a testament to the ability of one man to change the political landscape for the better, and he is inspirational as a one-man harbinger of liberty.

5 out of 5 stars The Father of the American Revolution Is Given His Due.......2007-05-22

No one has articulated it any better than Mark Puls when he states in his concluding remarks that " Americans of his generation came to view Samuel Adams as the spirit of liberty and the patriarch of liberty". Jefferson may have written about the ideals of independence more eloquently; Washington may have acted upon those ideals more directly; and, Franklin may have translated those ideals more concretely abroad to our French allies; however, no one of our founding fathers wrote more frequently, acted more fervently, or lived more fully and focused on the prize of separation and independence than Samuel Adams.

Maybe it's because Adams shunned the spotlight and the attention that others of his era sought so impassionately to grasp, or perhaps, he was content to simply see from the background the ultimate fruits of his prodigious labors. Whatever the reason, Adams emerged as the leading patriot strategist, politician as well as most influential writer in America. The author has truly captured the essence of the man who deservedly is called the Father of the American Revolution. It is a well-witten, if not long overdue, tribute to the mastermind behind the War of independence.

4 out of 5 stars S. A. shows one person can truly make a difference.......2007-04-21

Give the author an "A" for producing a very interesting and informative look at an Adams family member who has not received the attention from history he deserves. Give the publisher "F" for not being interested enough to have a proofreader correct the numerous grammatical errors before printing it.

4 out of 5 stars Good bio of the Father of the American Revolution.......2007-02-25

When you read about most revolutionary war figures - Washington, Hamilton, Adams, Jefferson or Madison - their stories more or less start with the American Revolution. Even Ben Franklin, a member of an earlier generation, did not jump on the Independence wagon very early or very easily. Samuel Adams, however, was the most important figure in the early Independence movement and quite rightfully deserves the title Father of the American Revolution.

Mark Puls brief (less than 250 pages of text) biography shows how important Adams was. From an early age, Adams started thinking of independence from England. In 1764, he unsuccessfully opposed the Sugar Act, but laid the foundation for his battle against the 1765 Stamp Act. Showing both good organizational ability and political savvy, he was able to successfully organize a boycott that forced Parliament to repeal the measure. Although it would take a decade to take root, this was really the first blow for independence; it began harder and harder for the British to deal with colonial unrest.

Eventually, after acts like the Boston Massacre and Boston Tea Party, the rift widened and reconciliation, though attempted, was clearly impossible. During the Revolutionary War, Adams played key roles behind the scenes. Although not an author of the Declaration of Independence, his ideas permeated the document; he also helped construct the Articles of Confederation. After the war, however, other figures moved into the spotlight, a role he was fine with giving up.

In ways Samuel Adams was an idealist, willing to sacrifice his health and financial well-being to accomplish his objectives. He was also, however, a pragmatist, able to work behind the scenes to meet his goals. Reading his biography, however, is also a lesson on how we determine who are our "heroes." In certain ways, Adams is little different from John Calhoun, who also felt he was opposing an oppressive government. Adams, however, is generally looked on favorably, while Calhoun - a major proponent of slavery and one who helped start the secession movement - has, at best, a mixed reputation.

Puls biography is a positive one that never really discusses his subject's flaws, but doesn't descend into the cloying sweetness of hagiography. Well-written, this book is readable and informative, providing insight into one of the lesser-known figures of the era. For those who enjoy learning about this period, or who seem to only know Samuel Adams from the beer that bears his name, this book will be a good read.

4 out of 5 stars THE MAN OF THE REVOLUTION .......2007-01-15

One of the seeming paradoxes of the American Revolution is that, unlike later revolutions, the issues in dispute, centrally the question of taxation without representation, appear from this distance to have been resolvable by essentially parliamentary means until very late in the conflict. This is reflected in the attitudes and political maneuverings of the members of the various colonial leaderships, Samuel Adams included. Unlike the French Revolution or the Russian Revolution there were apparently few conscious revolutionaries ready to take drastic action to gain independence until events forced their hands. Moreover, unlike those revolutions which were more or less predicted by substantial numbers of the people involved based on a whole series of social, political and economic factors the situation in America did not on the surface cry out for such a resolution. However, like those governments the various pre-revolutionary British governments and particularly the person of George III clung to their prerogatives beyond all reason. That is the unifying factor between all three revolutions.

That said, Samuel Adams, by hook or by crook, stands heads above the other colonial leaders in pressing the fight against the Crown to the end. He, unlike others in the various colonial leaderships, did not waiver when it became clear that nothing short of independence would resolve the conflict. From the time of the fight against the Stamp Act through the fight over the quartering of British troops in Boston to the ramifications of the Boston Massacre, the Townsend Acts, the Tea Party, the creation of the committees of correspondence to the call for the Continental Congress his name, thought and pen are linked to the struggles, particularly the struggles in Massachusetts, a pivotal locale of the colonial struggles. Moreover, again unlike other leaders, he was throughout the controversies connected with the plebian masses through the Sons of Liberty. Thus, without exaggeration he can truly be called a tribune of the people. That he has been placed on a lesser level in the pantheon of revolutionary heroes has more to do with how and who writes history than in the measure of the importance of his role in the Revolution.

One can make a strong argument that Adams's organizational skills were critical to the successful union of the colonies into a unitary fighting force against the Crown. His committees of correspondence which he initiated in Massachusetts as a means for dispensing information, producing propaganda and cohering a collective leadership for that colony and which he was instrumental in expanding to the other colonies led to the Continental Congress and thereafter to its call for a Declaration of Independence. No, he did not have a big role in the Declaration itself nor did he play a national role in the revolutionary struggle but one can clearly see his imprint on the thinking (and doing) of the times. The American Revolution was carried out by big men doing a big job. Sam Adams was a big man. If a closet Tory like his cousin John Adams has, due to recent biographical publicity, emerged as a bigger icon in the revolutionary galaxy then Sam Adams's certainly needs to be reevaluated. 4 out of 5 stars Review of Basic Statistics.......2007-02-20

This is a well written and illustrated text book that describes the working of statistics. Definitions are placed in boxs within the text so the defination of a term is where you read the uses of the term. Review questions are also place within the text so the question follows the definition and explation of the statitistical information being taught. The book also uses web sites for information and examples, software programs such as Excel, to add to the learning experience. Included is a CD with power point lessons, and sample quizes.

3 out of 5 stars Good Book but..........2006-10-19

Yes, put all the extra features together, namely the student CD and the Visual Statistics together, this seems like a well-put-together solution for a beginner statistics course. However, it needs some help. The book could be more thoroughly indexed. Visual Statistics software does not work properly even with updates. Sentence such as "The mean of the sampling distribution of the sample mean is obtained by summing the various sample means and dividing the sum by the number of samples" is not intuitive. This book has potential to be great, but it will take better teaching techniques than complex statistics talk.

    4 out of 5 stars introductory stats.......2006-07-05

The book is essentially a standard introductory probability and statistics course, with an emphasis on the statistics. The business and economics in the title is mostly reflected in the examples given in the text, which have that orientation.

There is also no emphasis on formal proving of various maths results. The typical reader is not expected to be a maths major, and probably does not need it.

A useful feature is the CD that accompanies the book. It lets the reader easily use a computer to handle the tedious data inputting and number crunching.

    Book Description

Davy BowmanÂ's brother and their dad hung the moon. Dad looks forward to Halloween more than a kid, and DavyÂ's brother, Bill, flies B-17s. Davy adores these two heroes and tries his best to follow their lead, especially now.

World War II has invaded DavyÂ's homefront boyhood. ThereÂ's an air raid drill in the classroom, and being a kid is an endless scrap drive. Bill has joined up, breaking their dadÂ's heart. ItÂ's an intense, confusing time, and one that will invite Davy to grow up in a hurry.

Still, Richard Peck is a master of comedy, and even in this novel of wartime uncertainty, he infuses his tale with humor: oddballs and rascals and boyhood misadventures alongside the poignant moments. This is one of Richard PeckÂ's very finest novels—a tender, unforgettable portrait of the World War II homefront and a familyÂ's love.

2 out of 5 stars I hate to spoil the party, but..........2007-08-27

I grew tired of this book about halfway through and put it down. The prose is perfect, the imagery vivid, but nothing kept pulling me further into the book. I feel hesitant criticizing the award-winning author, but I can't imagine a middle school boy reading this book unless he had to, because nothing much really happens.

5 out of 5 stars perfection on the page.......2007-08-11

Richard Peck is the best. He makes you want to turn the page for all the right reasons. Add this book to the long list of other great things RP has written. Bravo!

    5 out of 5 stars I laughed so hard, I nearly died!.......2007-07-27

(Listened to this book on CD) This book is a real gem. I rented some books on tape from my local library for a trip. This was the first one I popped in. I was rivited!! I laughed so hard....I thought I was gonna die. I even had to stop at a rest stop to use the mens room. While I was in there, the last scene of the story came to my mind and I began to laugh uncontrollably!. The man beside must have thought I was a real nut. This is truly a well written, well read book. I ended up listening to it over again...3 times. In fact I never even touched the other books I rented. I tried to listen to one other and almost immediately had to pop it out and put "Wings Of Heros" back in. I made my kids and wife listen to it. I love this book! I cannot highy reccommend it enough. The Charactors are priceless. It is one of the few books on tape that I would say is perfect! The scene where the boy is in school and they are having a practice air raid will leave you in stitches! The man who read this did such a good job, that I'm not sure I would have loved it as well as I do If I had read it myself. If you need a good laugh and love a good story and want to feel really good all over...do yourself a favor and rent or buy this book...then go for a 4 hour drive and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Gods and monsters.......2007-05-14

Richard Peck is such an old-fashioned guy. Go through his books and look what you find. Nasty bullies getting their due. Pranks. Upright citizens. Heroes. Work that makes a boy strong. And wise old people who dole out necessary advice and make the rest of us look weak in comparison. It takes a couple heaping helpfuls of nostalgia to write a Richard Peck book, and as far as I can figure it, nostalgia falls into two distinct categories: Good Nostalgia and Bad Nostalgia. Bad Nostalgia bores the socks off its readers. It wallows too deeply in the idea of how great things used to be and would rather eat its own shoes than allow that there might be some pretty great things going on right now. Good Nostalgia's a different beast entirely. It conjures up the past, transplanting its readers to another time. A time where there was good and there was bad, but most of all there was just a world that wasn't too unlike our own. "On the Wings of Heroes" is rife with Good Nostalgia. It bears the flaws of its genre without apology, but is a pretty good book in the end anyway.

Everyone has to have a hero. For Davy it's his older brother Bill. It's World War II and Bill's off to fight in a handsome B-17, carrying with him his small town's good wishes. Life before and during the war couldn't be more different. Before the war Davy spent a lot of time with his best friend Scooter, trying out their new bikes, enjoying Halloween, and playing in the warm summer nights. During is different. Now the kids are doing regular collections for the war effort. Bill's been sent off to fight and Davy's avoiding the malevolent (not to say violent) Beverly C. while dealing with family worries to boot. With a great cast of kooky characters and superb writing, a book that could have been yet another dull historical novel distinguishes itself. A great slice from the past.

A co-worker of mine is a gigantic Richard Peck fan. She's read his books cover to cover and then back again. As such, she's probably his biggest critic. After going through "Heroes", she found she was not entirely impressed. Richard Peck lite, she called it. She even pointed out certain elements to me. The dirty bully girl in the book? Wasn't she in a couple of his stories before? Ditto the ancient teacher idea, the pranks, and even the Midwestern setting. To her eyes, he's done it all before and he's done it better. Be that as it may, I am not a fan of her caliber. I read A Long Way From Chicago and A Year Down Yonder and enjoyed them just fine. Then I read The Teacher's Funeral and Here Lies the Librarian and was disappointed. So for me, "On the Wings of Heroes" represents a return to form. Sure Peck is reusing some old tropes and techniques. Still, if you take the book in and of itself and don't compare it to his past or future work, I think it stands rather nicely all on its own. It may not garner the biggest awards out there, but there's no doubt in my mind that it'll have its fans.

Peck's writing makes the whole enterprise well worth a peek anyway. First of all, he's funny, which is of vast unrecognized importance. Like any kid assigned this in school, I actually wasn't too keen on reading, "On the Wings of Heroes." Historical fiction is fine and all but I shy away from it when I can. So it's nice to get sucked into novel, especially if it's against your will. The individual sentences get all evocative and suggestions are made of future events. For example, whenever Davy's father hears of an injustice or a wrong, we hear that, "something coiled in him again." That "something" never uncoils in this book, but I suspect that it probably happens long after this particular story is over.

Of course, Peck writes of a white white world. If you're looking for a little diversity, he's not your man. It doesn't usually occur to me when I read him, but this book in particular shows just how pale as newly fallen snow Peck's universe is. He doesn't deal with racism or social injustice much at all. So when the DAR gets a mention, it sticks out more for me than it might if there was a single African-American character living in this Midwestern American town. Those of you who would prefer to read a book with a little more racial complexity would do well to look to another novel.

Will kids read it? Not if you don't sell it to them. Look, if a kid is standing in front of a row of books and one book has the title, Alcatraz Versus The Evil Librarians and the other book reads, "On the Wings of Heroes" which book is the kid going to pick up first? I mean some will read this book and love it, no question. It sounds odd to say, but the book this reminded me the most of was Ray Bradbury's, Dandelion Wine. Know me and know my love of "Dandelion Wine" and you'll see how grand a compliment this really is. It doesn't have Bradbury's dark surreal undercurrents, of course, but there's a lot of joy here and a lot of familiar ideas. Plus, other books crop up in the old memory as well, like the moment when the root beer brewing in the basement explodes like a fourteen gun salute. It reminded me of nothing so much as the brewing that goes on in that great 30s novel, Cheaper by the Dozen]. Though it shouldn't be confused with an accurate representation of the past in all respects, there's a lot in Peck's novel to enjoy. It has the ability to make children nostalgic for a time they will never know. Recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful read.......2007-04-27

I cannot think of any author who does more to refresh the palate and revive the spirit than Richard Peck. He has such fun telling a story. His uplifting and moving novel, On the 'Wings of Heroes' was exactly what I was in the mood for.

This book is an extension, of sorts, of a short story he contributed to 'Guys Write for Guys Read' by Jon Scieszka about his wonderful father and his love of Halloween.

This story begins on the eve of WWII. Peck perfectly evokes a time when neighbors knew each other and families banded together to support their community and the war effort with scrap metal drives, jalopy parades, black outs and tire rationing.

Davy Bowman's beloved older brother enlists and becomes a B-17 bombardier, flying missions over Germany. Davy worships his brother and his dad. His father loves his boys and fears for the oldest one because, as a WWI veteran, he knows war. The relationship between the boys and their dad is wonderfully written. Peck commented at a book signing, "I'm trying to share my father with boys who don't have them."

Sugar rationing, milkweed collecting and Boy Scout paper drives are part of the lives of Davy and his best friend Scooter. School teachers are called away to work in the war plants leaving bullies free reign in the classroom. News on the radio is all important and loving grandparents arrive to help out when times are tough.

The town is full of Peck's typically quirky characters and life lessons. Is the shotgun wielding Miss Titus crazy or the canniest substitute teacher in the world? What is in the trunk in Mr. Stonecypher's scary attic?

Certainly, Davy's heroes are his father and his brother but after reading this book you understand the heroism of those on the home front too: the long retired teacher who steps into the classroom again; the father whose son did not come home from WWI but supports the war effort; the victory gardens; blue, silver, and gold stars in the windows representing families in waiting or grieving.

The beauty, tenderness and humor in this very American story put it at the top of my favorite books list.

Let the others wear the ruffled shirts and ride grandly on horseback; Sam Adams, Massachusetts rebel leader, was a plain and plain-spoken fellow, both in history and in Why Don't You Get a Horse, Sam Adams? Adams, it turns out, was horseless for a good reason. On the way to figuring out just what that reason was, the reader gets a nice, personal look at a leader and his times.

In this book, as in the rest of her series of histories, Jean Fritz sneaks plenty of information into her story about Adams, the American Revolution, and the answer to the title question. (For ages 7 and up)

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Peculiar Guy, But..........2006-01-14

Who's Sam Adams that someone would write a book about him? Well, he's the guy that pretty much started the Revolutionary War. How could a shabbily dressed fellow who refused to ride a horse (EVERYBODY who was ANYBODY rode a horse) start a war between England (the mother country) and us? There's only one way to find out: R E A D.

    4 out of 5 stars Revolutionary style.......2003-12-22

Fritz has the rare talent of making historical figures more than interesting. She makes them human. Immersing the usual boring caricatures of her subjects in the small true stories that she has discovered in their lives, she gives us an entirely different way of looking at our American heroes. In this book, her talent for storytelling has been expertly paired with Trina Schart Hyman's intricate and intriguing pencil drawings. Sam Adams suddenly becomes somebody you'd like to sit down and have a mug of Guinness with. Without a doubt he is boisterous and a bit of a braggart. But he's also a great man, and this book never looses sight of the fact that, though ridiculous at times, Adams did great things and deserves to be remembered for them. There is little debate that Fritz's books remain some of the best historical children's biographies today. I well remember her stories from when I was a child myself, though I half wish Hyman illustrated ALL her books. This book would be absolutely perfect to teach to children during Revolutionary War history classes. Pairing it with all of Fritz's books would also be an exceptionally bright idea.

    5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2002-03-28

Many years ago I did a report on Samuel Adams for school. This book by Jean Fritz helped me get a high grade. It did not give me the impression that people who are smarter should be excused from being a soldier or any other ideas. In fact I enjoyed it so much that to this day I love learning about the American Revolution, because Jean Fritz made learning fun for me. I suggest that everyone read it.

    4 out of 5 stars OK.......2000-06-11

my teacher is really absesed with Jean Fritz so she reads her books to us and this was one of them. this book is really not as bad as you may think it can be funny in some was and it is jambed with little interasting facts that JF found so it sort`ve interasting and you can learn from it. i think anybody should try even if they think it looks stupid because some books turn out to be very interasting.

    3 out of 5 stars Why don't you get a horse?.......2000-05-04

I didn't like the book because it was sort of dumb. The author spent too much time talking about Sam not riding a horse. I wanted to learn more about the war and soldiers of the town of Boston. I wondered if Sam Adams was a part of the war.

    3 out of 5 stars Soulmates.......2004-11-15

This book is great in trying to educate younger people or lift their awareness levels to live healthier lives. However I discovered first hand that there is a greater gift beyond soulmates. It's the twin soul. This book is good because most people don't understand themselves or relationships enough or aren't mean to in this lifetime have the twin connection. Soulmates are also meant for our growth and most people need to understand and grow through them. That's the bigger thing most people need to understand. There are however other rarer relationships.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2002-01-10

I found this book to be both practical and grounded in Biblical truth. The fact of the matter is that the Bible does not advocate a specific method of spouse-hunting (there is not a single example of courtship anywhere in Scripture, it didn't even occur until the 1400's. The rule of Biblical times was arranged marriage, which obviously doesn't apply very easily to modern times). Before you kiss dating goodbye, I suggest reading this book (and The Bible, of course, as the ultimate authority).

5 out of 5 stars A hands on book for Christian dating.......2001-08-10

This is a great follow up book to The 10 Commandments of Dating. As a Christian, what I appreciate about this book is its healthy balance between following the will of God in the dating world and accepting personal responsibility for who we end up with as a mate. There has to be more to finding a soul mate than "you'll just know." This book gives concrete points to see if you and your boyfriend/girlfriend are on the right track. I think the reason so many people may end up with broken relationships is that they get carried away by all of the emotion in the beginning of a relationship and then no longer use their brain on down the line. Once things get more involved and complicated - they tend to ignore things because they are "in love."

The authors give a fresh approach with a solid biblical foundation in these crazy days of navigating through the dating world. I appreciate their honesty and reality when dealing with singles in today's society. The church often does not address "dating" and this book is a much needed resource.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a non-insulting Christian 'dating' book for all!.......2002-02-04

I've read my share of 'dating' books, most of the time after a relationship has ended in flames (this time was no exception). I've also read a number of 'Christian' advice books about dating, most of which range from the banal (sex is for marriage) to the ridiculous (don't show physical affection ever!), without preaching. I picked this book up in a spate of post-relationship depression and quickly it helped me to identify many of my frequent mistakes. It mentions God, but it doesn't limit the expression 'don't be unevenly yoked' to 'don't date non-Christians'; it includes things along the lines of 'don't be a Mother Theresa in your relationship'. It also identifies one of the mistakes of relationships as being, if you can believe it, 'praying together'--correctly identifying the stupid over-spiritualization of honest to goodness human infatuation that I've seen too often in relationships. (And have been guilty of.)

I read it cover to cover in one sitting at the bookstore. (And wished I had read it *before* I wasted my most recent relationship.) It is also 'worldly' enough to allow me to feel that I can recommend it to any of my friends (Christian or non-Christian).

    5 out of 5 stars Solid, time-tested dating advice..........2001-09-24

The Bible doesn't specifically say much about how to "date" in the modern sense
    but it does
give boundaries and guidelines for how to select someone and how to build a relationship that, once blessed, will last.
    This book is great.

Commandments like... "Thou Shalt Get a Life" and
"Thou Shalt Not Play House" really emphasize how God's intention for a relationship to begin is totally opposite of what the secular community believes is ok. Getting a life, developing your own character before marriage and not co-habitating before the wedding day are really examples of how God's plan for marriage takes time to build and the "world's" way is rushed and focuses on instant gratification. This book will challenge you to examine your own dating relationships and how you can improve them by going God's way and not the self directed path which almost always fizzles out. Pick it up!!
