BURIED IN TREASURES: HELP FOR COMPULSIVE ACQUIRING, SAVING, AND HOARDING is written for those who have a compulsive hoarding problem: it comes from a team of scientists who have worked for over a dozen years on developing a program for treating hording, and chapters both define compulsive hoarding and offer strategies to begin to sort, discard and move away from hoarding habits. The authors have been featured on TV and in articles for their ground-breaking research, and BURIED IN TREASURES is thus a recommended pick beyond the usual college-level health library, reaching easily into public library collections with an easily-accessed format and approach.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book! .......2007-06-08

While it's true that it is not presented in a scholarly way (as a previous reviewer commented), the information in the book represents the most current knowledge we have on hoarding. As others have mentioned, the authors are preeminent experts in the field. All three are Ph.Ds and have published numerous scholarly works on this topic. I believe the authors must have deliberately chosen to leave out the clinical jargon for this book, in order to make the information accessible to those without a medical or science background. I think the book is quite elegant in its simplicity and clarity, and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about hoarding.

4 out of 5 stars Good info for relatives of hoarders.......2007-06-08

This book has a lot of valuable information about hoarders and how their minds process differently than non-hoarders. Although the intended audience is hoarders themselves, I don't see hoarders as able to read this book and follow the process. I do think the book is helpful to anyone who lives with or knows a hoarder, and also mental health providers.
One negative: the large page size is a bit unwieldy.

5 out of 5 stars You might need this book and not know it........2007-05-22

Hard core look at why we can't throw things away. New info, not just a "how to organize" book. Real help for pack rats like me who are not over the edge yet, but are teetering.

5 out of 5 stars A Useful Tool.......2007-05-08

In the introduction of "Buried in Treasures", Tolin, Frost and Steketee offer two cautions to the reader. Caution 1 "this book will not solve your hoarding problems". They state "this book is a guide that will provide you with the necessary information to understand the problem of compulsive hoarding and will give you tools to help beat the problem". Caution 2 is that "overcoming compulsive hoarding will be hard work".

The authors emphasize that hoarding is "a problem of emotional, mental, behavioral, and social well-being" and that "some scientific evidence suggests that there may be a genetic component to hoarding". It is basically a description of the treatment program that they have developed over many years of treating patients at their hoarding clinic. While the book discusses the physical side regarding sorting and purging as well as the stopping of the acquiring, its' emphasis is on the mental/emotional side of hoarding.

As opposed to other similar books, this book is based on science and ongoing clinical research. The book is essentially a guide to change and the authors note that "people start to work on their hoarding problem when the reasons for change outweigh the reasons for not changing, and not a moment sooner". Their suggested treatment is based on CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy) which is solution focused.

This is somewhat of a workbook. It includes many exercises to help the hoarder to consciously change their thinking. Some examples are a self-assessment test in the chapter "What is Compulsive Hoarding?", a hoarding severity scale that is very similar
to the NSGCD Hoarding Scale, Visualization Exercises, Category & Location lists and questionnaires such as "Comparing Your Perceptions with Those of Others".

Early in the book, the authors introduce and discuss the Bad Guys: 1 - It's Just Not My Priority, 2 - Letting Unhelpful Beliefs Get In Your Way, 3 - Overthinking or Confusing Yourself, 4 - Avoidance and Excuse Making and 5 - Going for the Short-Term Payoff. Then they introduce the Good Guys: 1- Keeping Your Eyes on the Prize, 2 - Downward Arrow, 3 - Thinking It Through, 4 - Behavioral Experiments and 5 - Developing the Right Skills. The authors revisit the Bad Guys and the Good Guys again later in the book when dealing with motivation and "taking on your brain".

An interesting observation noted by the authors was that when hoarders attempted to sort their own items, they tended to have lots of little categories but when sorting similar items that belonged to other people, they were able to sort into a few large general categories. This suggests that when dealing with their own possessions, "their emotions get in the way and cause them to process information differently".

As a Professional Organizer, I consider this book a tool. It is not a `how to' that a hoarder could pick up, read and follow to a successful conclusion. On their own, most hoarders are just not capable of following some of the suggestions, such as, "you might want to think a step or two ahead"! However this is an excellent book if used as part of a larger treatment program.

Climb aboard for the swashbuckling adventure of a lifetime. Treasure Islandhas enthralled (and caused slight seasickness) for decades. The names Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins are destined to remain pieces of folklore for as long as children want to read Robert Louis Stevenson's most famous book. With it's dastardly plot and motley crew of rogues and villains, it seems unlikely that children will ever say no to this timeless classic. --Naomi Gesinger

4 out of 5 stars A Trifle Dated but Still Worth a Read.......2007-10-18

I missed this one as a boy though I had always loved adventure fiction. So years later, and no longer a boy, I picked it up and tried to read it. But I just couldn't get into it and so put it aside. More recently I picked it up again, this time determined to see it through.

Although it wasn't compelling at the start, with the appearance of an old pirate, Billy Bones, at the Admiral Benbow Inn run by young Jim Hawkins' father, it did start to pick up a head of steam as I pushed my way into it. I was pleasantly surprised to find it catching me up with the discovery of the map and the appearance of the pirates in hot pursuit of Billy Bones, and Jim's race to Dr. Livesy and Squire Trelawney to gain their protection. Intriguingly these upstanding English gentlemen, pillars of their community, decide to hunt the treasure for themselves though the squire, at least, lacks the good sense or discretion to keep the project secret. And so young Jim is swept along into the excursion, upon the death of his father, and soon finds himself aboard a suspect ship manned by an even more suspicious seeming crew on the way to a desert island in the Caribbean where old pirate Captain Flint's treasure is purportedly buried.

The most interesting character is, of course, the by now famous Long John Silver who has long since entered into the cultural zeitgeist. But Silver's not nearly as charming or charismatic in this book as he has come to seem in popular recollection. Young Jim Hawkins, for his part, is a mischievous fellow who manages to get himself into one scrape after another while always coming out alright, even when he is obliged to face down a treacherous mutineer or when he stumbles unthinkingly into the pirates' own nest.

In truth Treasure Island is not quite as exciting or as easy a read as one might expect for all its reputation. Still, it was nicely done and kept me reading to the end (though it did end with something of a letdown, leading me to think it somewhat overrated). It was a boy's book from the first, according to its author and I think it works well enough as that. Still, it's somewhat dated and lacks the excitement we've come to expect in our adventures today. Good but not among the best, in my view. I thought Stevenson's Master of Ballantrae much the better book.

5 out of 5 stars This is how a pirate story should be. Sorry, Johnny Depp........2007-10-06

I'm not a young boy, and yet I love this book that has been traditinally associted with kids every since it was written. In fact, it is one of my favorite books, and why not? Here is a book that first and foremost recognizes that a pirate adventure should be, well, an adventure, and makes sure to put the fun, danger, and excitement in the front with all the silly, pop-corn vibe action any kid could ask for.

It begins in England in seaside inn, told by the voice of hero Jim Hawkins. His parents own the inn, and one of the strangest guests is a man named Billy Bones, a guy who practically has split-personality in is treatment of young Jim. It turns out that the man is wanted for possessing a map to a legendary treasure. When pirates attack in an awesome pirate attack (how else can I describe it?) Jim finds himself aboard a ship on an adventure to find the treasure.

What follows is a classic, pulse-racing adventure of good and evil, pirates and good guys, and island fun, complete with all the necessary twists and turns and danger and betrayal.

It's not all fluff--Stevenson adds some surprisingly deep human emotions that actually serve to make the adventure that much more powerful. But never fear, it does not turn into a soap opera no matter how many subsequent movies want it to.

As I said before, it's an adventure story of piracy on the high seas, and that's what makes it so great.

5 out of 5 stars Pieces of eight, pieces of eight!.......2007-09-04

Treasure Island is the first greatest pirate story of all times. The young and brave Jim Harkins, the scary but honorable Long John Silver, the smart and solid Doctor Livesey. Frankly I could go on and on listing interesting characters, major or otherwise, but let me just say that, having never before read the novel, I totally enjoyed it. It has everything, from a blind beggar to a treasure map to drunken pirates, a parrot, and lots of plotting. Who is with the good guys? Who is with the bad guys? Who is out for themselves? Read and see.

4 out of 5 stars Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

A tale of pirates, peglegs, parrots, purloining and perfidery and old Blind Pew.

A lost treasure map is wanted by many, who are willing to kill to get it. These men are pirates, and a young lad, Jack Hawkins, and the odd other innocent get caught up in the struggle.

A source of much classic pirate caricature and pretty enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars Pirates, Parrots and Buried Treasure!.......2007-08-17

By Laura B.

Treasure Island is an amazing story of adventure on the high seas, a tale of betrayal and friendship; an exciting saga of pirates on a search for buried treasure, this is a story that any age group will love. I have only seen Treasure Island movies in the past, and on reading the book I found the story different from what I've known. I am going to tell you a little about the book, I don't want to spoil the story so I won't tell you the entire thing.

The story first tells of how young Jim Hawkins got Captain Flint's Treasure map from Captain Billy Bones. Jim found the map in Billy Bones' sea chest when Jim and his mother were looking through the chest for the money that Bones owed them. Because you see Bones had died during his attempt to escape the evil pirates who were after him. So Jim and his mother had to hurriedly look for the money, and while his mother was trying to count out the right amount of money Jim took Captain Flint's map.

After the pirates attacked the "Admiral Benbow" that was the name of the inn that the Hawkins family owned, Jim goes and gets help from Dr.Livesey and Squire Trelawney and together they board a ship called the Hispaniola and set a course for Treasure Island.

On board Jim becomes friends with the ship's cook Long John Silver (who owns a parrot named Cap'n Flint after the infamous pirate captain), but little does Jim know that Silver is actually a pirate and an ex-member of Captain Flint's crew. Jim soon learns of a sinister plot being made by Silver to steal the treasure that might endanger him and his friends.

I won't say anymore. If you're the type that enjoys stories of pirates, treasure, and a parrot that says "pieces of eight, pieces of eight" you'll have to read the book. You can also read other Robert Louis Stevenson books like Kidnapped which I haven't read but it's supposed to be good, but the book you'll enjoy most is Treasure Island.

Gary's Grampa recently died. Everyone thinks it was a fishing accident, but Gary is sure he was murdered, by someone who wants to claim the gold Grampa was on the verge of finding. He left behind a note for Gary and a map showing the places he'd already searched.

Gary enlists his best friend Brian to help him search both for the gold and for his Grampa's killer.

The first time you meet him, it is clear who the villain in this story is. The description is so heavy-handed, it is impossible to be surprised by his identity. The ending of this book is a bit too neat, too, with everyone ending up so satisfied. There was no room for suspense or surprise in this story.

Trapped In Death Cave is in my opinion the best book ever written for kids at the age 10 years and up level!!! and when I say up is because I first bought this book back in 1987 when i bought it at the book fair. I enjoyed the book so much that i make sure I have at least 2 or 3 on havd to let other kids read. I still read it at least once a year and I'm 33 years old. What can I say, the book is a keeper. Now my kids have enjoyed the thrill and edge of your seat that a kids book should have!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Putting this book down was hard!.......2005-09-23

This book is the best mystery book I've ever read. It gives a lot of description and hides the ending. You can't guess the ending of the book like most mysteries. It is easy reading (for me) but I enjoyed the back description I couldn't pass it up.
This book is great for anyone who likes mysteries or needs a good book.

I enjoyed reading Trapped in Death Cave. It is a mystery book and I like mysteries. Gary, Brian and Mrs. Becker get trapped in the cave by Odie Wilson, who wants the gold hidden there all to himself. Everyone thinks Mrs. Becker is a witch but when she ends up saving the lives of two boys they have a party for her. Then they close off the cave so no one will go back.

I would recommend this book to kids under the age 12.

Book Description

Four kids are on a marine expedition for the summer, diving to explore an underwater habitat that's just been altered by a seismic event. What they find, though, is much more than fish - it's sunken treasure. Can they salvage it without anyone else getting to it first? Will the prospect of wealth set them against one another? And what about those sharks . . . .DIVE is another action-packed trilogy from Gordon Korman. The narrative will shift between an account of two kids caught in the shipwreck and the story of the four kids fighting over and desperately trying to get the treasure.

DIVE
by,Gordon Korman

My book is Dive. The book is about four teenagers that are chosen by a professor to dive and explore the sea. They aren't sure why they are there, but they know that they're looking for something big. The other divers are covering up something, and they don't want Star, Dante, Adriana, and Kaz to know.
I think this book makes people think about what could happen next. That is one of the reasons why I like it. Another reason is that you don't know what they're hiding until a little more than half of the story, and you want to find out so bad so you're on you're toes! The setting of the story is out on an island in the Atlantic Ocean.

( I didn't tell people what they're hiding, because they mignt want to read it, and find out for them selves.)

4 out of 5 stars Dive: The Discovery : Book One.......2006-12-01

Dive: The discovery is pretty much a adventure/mystery that takes place in the middle of the Carribean. It's about four kids who are set-up for a diving internship at an oceanography company called Poisedon. They're with the Ponce de Leon and it's crew, but they find out that they're four litte pawns in a treasure hunt. The crew of the Ponce de Leon has the kids mark random caves while they take metal scans for the missing gold. They obviously don't solve the problem in the first book,so they leave off with a cliffhanger. They also have a side story about an abandoned orphan who's at the mercy of Captain James Blade. They're on a ship called the Griffon, with more than 100 crew members. James Blade states that it's "perfectly legal" and "goverment certified," to steal treasure from Spain's ships and plunder their gold. The boat later wrecks, and all their gold sinks to the depths of the Carribean, and now the Ponce de Leon crew is after it.

I think that Dive is an exciting book that has many adventures. There are four divers that have been chosen to explore the sea. While they are there they run into a couple problems. The killer sharks and someone is covering up something big that they dont want people to know about.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2007-07-16

Yup, you heard me:Inspiring. I based an entire one week/half day summer camp off of this book. I loved the idea of being a pirate and visiting different islands looking for gold even though the X wasn't on those islands. I loved that the candy islanders took good care of their teeth. We came up with games for each island, craft and snack to accompany it and the kids were entertained all week based off this story. The only thing I did NOT like about it is the "Gleaming Booty" I knew I could not read this to my class of 3-5 year olds without them missing the point. I also didn't like that the pirate at the beginning of the story STOLE the map from the queen and that at the end of the story he didn't learn his lesson. But theres a lot to be said for the creativity, the illustration of the maps, the ideas and wording...it inspired me to do an entire camp based on it.

5 out of 5 stars Dive Book 2 The Deep.......2007-02-26

I read Dive Book 2 The Deep by Gordon Korman. I think the most annoying this is when you're going on to the next book in a series and the author explains all the events that happened. Gordon Korman doesn't do that. He sort of starts a new chapter as if it was from book 1. This story takes places in Poseidon Saint Luc, a tiny city in the Caribbean. Kaz, Dante, Adriana, and Star found strange artifacts in their diving site. They figure out that the artifacts came from a Spanish Galleon, Nuestra Senora de las luz.

The four divers are going to stay in the Poseidon underwater self-contained habitat or PUSH. PUSH is located 65 feet beneath the surface. The four divers go on dives to look for nothing but artifacts. They find a dagger, silverware, and plates, and a bell. Adriana spends an hour scrubbing the coral off the bell to see if there's any writing. She figures out that the bell is from Toledo, a Spanish city where there is most metalwork. It doesn't seem like that much but it's worth 1.2 billion dollars.

Before the end of their stay, Dante finds a trench. He knew that artifacts would go down there. The four divers and a specialist will go on a deep water scout which looks like a giant bubble. At 700 feet down, they see danger.

I would recommend this book to people who like suspenseful mysteries. I couldn't really connect to this because this is a rare moment.

This first book was very exciting and had you at the edge at all times. This book a bit boring, and I could tell it was just filler for the end of book three. Because of that it was a disapointment to me.

In Dive Book 2 Kaz Adriana Star and Dante` are looking for a treasure. While Star is swimming thier boat gets secretly blown up.what is Star going to do.

For my opiion for this book I would say this is AWSOME.Its awsome because the charactors are so lively. Its like they are talking to you.You will love this book.

I would rate this book a five out five because of the swimming, adventure andaction. If you don't like swimming trust me you won't like it.Even if youdon't like swimming try and read it.Then try reading the whole series.

This book is about a group of 4 divers (3 amuture divers, 1 handicaped diver) who are looking for a sunking Spanish vessel that has a huge treasure aboard it. But they have to find it behind everyone's back and before a treasure hunter finds it first.

If you like the sea, diving, and suspence, then read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great writer of "series" books.......2007-02-06

I bought this and several other Gordon Korman books for my 11 year-old son. He devours everything Korman writes. Anything that will capture a boy's interest and make him "beg" to read is okay with me, and Korman seems to have the formula to keep kids this age riveted to the end!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!! By Jamaca James.......2004-10-27

Kaz, Adriana, Dante, and Star. 4 Divers. 1 Treasure. 1 Great Adventure.
This action packed series by the author Gordon Korman, is a great story of underwater adventure between the internship of these 4 teens on a diving mission. But this diving mission isn't just that. The 13 year old inexperienced kids find underwater wrecks with treasure worth over a billion dollars. One point two billion dollars to be exact. The pirates from long ago sunk in a hurricane with their treasure only to be found 300 years later by Kaz's quick learning, Adriana's smarts, Dante's great, but unusual eyesight, and Star's experience to guide them along the way. And with the help of a few friends of course.
I really enjoyed this series. And the ending didn't dissapoint me either! You'll just have to find out for yourself to see what happens!
This author writes the series of Island and Everest. Check these out as well!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books i have ever read.......2004-10-25

Dive Book 3 is one of the best books i have ever read. It is about these four teen interns that are in Cote St. Luce on a diving internship for the summer. They start off having a good time and everything is running smoothly. But, after about three weeks of being there they find out that their captain is a treasure hunter and not a scientist trying to "learn" about the ocean. He is just using them for the treasure that they find. But what they werent expecting was a few deaths because of this situation. They get through the summer by sticking together. To find out what happens you will have to read the book, but the story makes more sense if you read the series!!!
I really think that these stories are great to read and are perfect for people that like stories with mystery and action. I think that these books are great for anyone in grades 4-8th!!!!

5 out of 5 stars dive 3: the danger.......2004-10-25

When the going gets tough friends stick together, right? Well these are pretty close friends if you ask me. Dante's colorblind, Star got the binds, and Kas is going on a 703 feet deep dive, as for Adriana, she's stuck on some internship while her brother and uncle are on some archeologist dig. Their friend and Captain died because of one person. Now they have found the Griffin with a hidden story behind it. The only thing that stands in their way is an 18 foot tiger shark, and Marina.
I love adventure books, ecspecially this one. Kas has a horrible memmory and a storg, but tender attitude. I think Gordon Korman did a great job on this series, but this book got me. I would strongly recommend this book.

Concluding the story begun in The Secret of the Unicorn, Red Rackham's Treasure follows Tintin and friends as they search for the pirate booty procured by Captain Haddock's ancestor, Sir Francis Haddock, in the West Indies. They receive some unexpected help in the form of a hard-of-hearing inventor named Professor Calculus, who would go on to become one of the most endearing characters of the series. (Herge admitted that the character was one "whom I never suspected would take on such importance.") It's a lot of fun, with some submarine and diving adventures, humor from the Thompsons, and an unexpected (but satisfying) ending. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Exciting and funny, but still not among the best Tintin adventures.......2007-08-19

This is the second book in a series of two, the first one being "The secret of the Unicorn". In this adventure Tintin and Captain Haddock goes on an expedition to find the treasure of Sir Francis Haddock. It is in this book Tintin meets Professor Cuthbert Calculus for the first time. His underwater machine turns out to be invaluable, even though Tintin and Captain Haddock at first reject it.

This book is faster paced and more interesting than the first of the two and contains a lot of enjoyable humor. Professor Calculus is hard of hearing (almost deaf), and the book is filled with a lot of comic situations arising from the Professors condition. I admit I found these episodes to be funny, but they could also be objectionable to some. Overall a very good comic book, but not among the better of the Tintin adventures.

4 out of 5 stars Secret of the Unicorn II.......2007-04-13

Herge, Red Rackham's Treasure (Methuen, 1948)

Now we get to the meat of things. Our intrepid friends, accompanied by Professor Calculus, head off in search of the Unicorn. Needless to say, this is not as easy as it sounds, and sends the crew on wild goose chases that seem to be but excuses for Herge to draw underwater scenes. Not, mind you, that I'm denigrating the book, which is just as good as the one before it; once again, this is a book where nothing of real consequence takes place from a plot perspective (it is most notable today for being the first appearance of Calculus, the final main character to be introduced in the series' run), but it's still full of action, danger, and good fun. *** ½

5 out of 5 stars Colurful and action packed Tintin classic.......2007-02-14

Tintin and Captian Haddock prepare to depart on the search for the hidden treasure of Red Rackham, and are approached by an eccentric hard of hearing inventor, Professor Calculus, who simply won't go away.

His shark submarine is to prove invaluable in Tintin and the Captain's search, and Calculus will be a constant figure in all subsequent Tintin books.
They are also joined by the irrepresible Thomp(s)on twins. They take a ship to a remote tropical island and come across all sorts of interesting things like skeleton human remains of pirates, and parrots that have handed down from generation to generation, Haddock's vocabulary.
After much adventure they return home, where the real treasure is waiting and where Captain Haddock inherits the mansion Marlinkspike, his ancestral home, which was previously owned by the criminal Bird brothers (See the Secret of the Unicorn).
Another courful and action packed Tintin classic

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars TRIXIE BELDEN.......2005-11-24

I've read them all - I own them all. Trixie Belden has been one of my favorites since I was very young.

5 out of 5 stars Sailing and Treasure Hunts.......2005-08-08

When Honey and Jim invited the Bob-Whites to vacation on Cobbett's Island, Trixie announces she just wants to relax. None of her friends believe her, and it turns out they are right. On the night they arrive, a fierce storm hits the island, and the Bob-Whites find a letter in the library of the house they are staying in. It sounds like some money was hidden years ago. But who hid it? Is it still there? And where might they find the map? Meanwhile, they've befriended their neighbor Peter who introduces them to the wonderful sport of sailing. Might his knowledge help them find the money?

I knew this was a favorite in the series, but I had forgotten just how much I enjoyed it until I reread it. Yes, the plot gets a little slow at times, but all in all, it's a lot of fun and comes together in the end for a very satisfying solution. The characters are the best versions of themselves without some of their flaws being over exaggerated like in other books in the series. Even Diana is able to contribute and doesn't come across as a fraidy cat. The only thing that could make it better is if Dan had been able to go.

This adventure in the series is certainly not to be missed.

Getting my son to read is worse than pulling teeth, however, when we picked up this series, he won't put the book down till he's finished! The books have about 25-30 small chapters, which makes it easy to read for those small attention spans. And his sense of pride and accomplishment is evident with the fact that HE read a 30 chapter book! I definatly recommend all of these books.
