This graphic novel moved me because the story hit a nerve about how it feels to be a young immigrant who longs to belong to the new country. The stories are clever, humerous, and emotionally authentic. Highly recommended read. I want to buy copies of this book to hand out to all the Chinese-American kids who are embarrassed about their Chinese part.

This is the first graphic novel I've read (well, I've read many a comic book in my day, but I'm delineating here). Not a bad choice for a first time, as Gene Yang's parable of a Chinese boy in America actually begs for second and third readings. A graphic novel with multiple layers, you ask? In fact, yes.

Separated into sections that will join at the end, AMERICAN BORN CHINESE blends the ancient Chinese fable of the Monkey King with the tale of Jin Wang, the book's protagonist, who happens to be the only Chinese boy trying to fit in to his American school.

A third story, the source of over-the-top humor and under-the-belt stereotypes, chronicles the travails of a popular American high school student named Danny who is beleaguered by his Chinese-born cousin, Chin-Kee. What did Danny ever do to deserve this Eastern nightmare? Why does he have to change schools every year due to the humiliation Chin-Kee rains down on him?

The answers are unexpected but pleasing as parable, fable, and morality tale meet nicely at a place called "The End." Winner of the Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature, AMERICAN BORN CHINESE is a satisfying read that can also serve as a substantive discussion piece in the classroom (Grades, say, 7 and up).

American Born Chinese is an easy read in comic book form that starts as three different stories and becomes one. The first is a young American boy named Jin Wang, whose parents are Chinese. He is an outcast who does not have many friends. The second story is about his cousin Chin-Kee who lives in China and visits Jin once a year. He is the exaggerated Chinese stereotype: eating cats and peeing in cokes. The third is an old Chinese myth about the monkey king. The monkey king has been embarrassed and tries to be someone he is not.

The legend's moral is: be true to yourself and kind to others. This relates to my life because sometimes at school someone feels they are not liked by a group of people. They will try and become someone they are not to fit in. They will even act mean to others who are not popular. The book points out that to transform like this costs you your soul.

I like the author's writing style because it is different and fun to read. It caught my interest quickly and the pictures gave me a better understanding of the story. I think that in this comic book style of writing the author can better express himself than in any of the more formal writing styles.

I enjoyed this book because it reminds me that I should not be anything but myself. I liked the illustrations because they were very inventive. One of my favorite parts was when the little monkey was wearing the shoes on his ears. I would highly recommend this book to people who like mythology, who like comics, and who love monkeys.

A great story for any child (or anyone) feeling alone in a strange and alien world. We've all been in the same situation at some point in our life. We are all different yet not so different.

This book is a book of three tales about a child (Jin Wang), a Monkey King, and a visiting cousin from Japan. During the first part of the of the book you can see that in a new place, times can be difficult. People chose to be stereotypical and treat Jin Way and his friend Wei-Chin Sun like outcasts. The monkey king learns many disciplines over time, making himself become practically invincible. Danny is a normal boy visited by his cousin who starts to ruin Danny's life. As you can see this book is a thrilling graphic novel that will take through the experiences of stereotypes and problems of people and things from another place.

Nice journal.......2007-07-30

I quite like this book, though I bought it in a store, so I knew what it was when I purchased it. Yes, it's a journal with blank pages to write on. But what I liked about it is the interesting lists of places to see that pop up every 10 pages or so. It also has a quote about travel on each page. The cover is not a hardback, but not a paperback... somewhere in between. It has an attached ribbon bookmark, and a pocket in front that I would use to store receipts on the trip. I would have liked it to be spiral bound to make it easier to write in, so I may take mine to Kinko's and have them cut the binding off and spiral bind it for me.

It is more like a daily travel journal for your personal observations and notes of sites you seen during the travel. The book also is a checklist of places to visit/see. I am taking my teenager on a backpacking trip around the world, and this obviously requires a bit of research. I have to admit that I have done most of this in the bookstores, sitting with a book such as this one, and taking notes.

This book, this massive tome, though, kept calling to me every time I went in. I came up with a justification for buying it easily enough - it will look great on the coffee table! (And it does)

It impresses in several ways

1- The breadth - every country in the world - every single one - has a 2 page spread. (Only thing left out are the micronations, but don't worry, LP has a separate book just for them!)

2 - The pictures - in true LP fashion, the photos are stunning views into another place, a different culture, often taken from an angle you don't expect.

3 - The information - concise, accurate, up-to-date. Included are little bits you won't easily find elsewhere, like how much for a cup of coffee, or the best things to shop for, or unexpected experiences one may find just off the beaten path. Of course, you will also find the essential bits of history and culture to help you get a feel for the place.

I find my self turning to it time and again as I research our trip - it gives me just enough info to know if I want to further investigate a place, or if I should just leave it to armchair travel. This book, by the way, is the ultimate guide for the armchair traveller!

My son has used it for school projects. When he had to write a paper on Africa that included 5 different countries, this is the book he used to determine which countries to research.

Also, it really does look FANTASTIC on your coffee table! Your friends will pick it up as soon as they sit down - you'll see. It is such a large and gorgeous book, and at such a crazy cheap price, there's little risk here.

If your considering buying it, go ahead, you will be happy to own it. And your friends will be glad you own it, too!

I am so happy I decided to buy this. It helps me understand what other parts of the world are like the people and land. Places I never even knew existed. I have a better understand and Idea of what the world is like now. I have even become very interested in learning about other places and to visit them. It is my first resource to picking a place to go on vacation. This is a great resource if you want ideas for places to travel. My only complaint is that I wish the book listed a little more practical information on each country. They dont tell much about the countries. Also I would highly recommend purchasing the hardcover edition as the paper back in this book is so large that it quickly became unglued from the spine. Definatly get this book if you are curious about places of the world or if want to glimpse into all the countries looking for places to visit. I didnt know how many choices there are. The photographs are wonderful and real of what daily life is really like in each country. Not like the romantic touristy photos in other books. This is really healpful because you dont just see all the beautiful good places in a country. You get to see the reality wich is really helpful when choosing a vacation destination. I only give 4 stars because of the lack of information provided on each country is very small.

This is a beautiful coffee-table sized book that gives the reader a "taste" of every country in the world. As a traveler, I love the pictures and the opportunity to learn about countries I read and hear about. It'a a great introduction and the references to movies, books and movies about the country are helpful too.

My daughter is only 20 months old now, but we began reading this book to her at about 14 months. She has learned the names of fruits in spanish and how to count to 5 within a couple of weeks of beginning to read it. It is one of her favorite books along with "Oso pardo, Oso pardo...". This is one of the required books for a spanish class that she will be beginning when she turns 2. As a spanish speaker it is a really easy book for me to read with fun pictures that my daughter enjoys. Even now she loves to put her fingers in the holes to count the fruit. For parents/caregivers who are not quite as experienced in reading spanish, it may be a little difficult to pronounce some of the words, but with some help you should be able to read the words effortlessly after a few times. My parents and in-laws don't speak much english and they love reading these spanish books to their granddaughter. It's a great way for them to bond.

This Spanish version of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" is just as cute as the English version. Children will love the pages of varying sizes with holes where the caterpillar has eaten up the food.

You can also practice counting up to five with your little one as the bug eats one apple on Monday, two pears on Tuesday, etc.

The vocabulary in this book DOES require a Spanish speaker in the home. My husband does not speak Spanish and this book is too hard for him to read to our babies, whereas he can read other Spanish board books. Additionally, as it is only in Spanish, my husband cannot compare the Spanish words to English.

Still, I think it's a great addition to your library if one adult speaks Spanish and you are trying to teach your children the language too.

In case you aren't familiar with this book, it is about a caterpillar who eats and eats and eats. The board book version has holes in the pages so the reader can see what he has eaten. It is so cute! The illustrations are adorable and the kids love it! We are a bilingual family so my boys have the Spansih version. It's super and very durable!

Difficult Topic Handled with Sensitivity.......2007-10-12

Writing about how Nepalese girls are sold into slavery and taken to India to be forced into a life of prostitution is no easy matter -- especially in a YA book. Given the topic, Patricia McCormick manages not only to pull it off, but to pull it off with sensitivity.

McCormick is a writer's writer, and the calibre of wordsmithing is a cut above your average YA fare. She first conjures the natural beauty of mountainous Nepal, even though her protagonist, a thirteen-year-old girl named Lakshmi, is dirt poor. Then, for contrast, she describes the claustrophobic penury and filth of Lakshmi's city captivity. In Nepal, our young protagonist lives with her Ama and her evil stepfather (a twist on the Cinderella motif). It is he who ultimately gambles what little they have away and heartlessly sells his stepdaughter into slavery (she assumes she is going off to be a maid and bravely vows to send what she earns home so her Ama can install a tin roof on their hut).

After a grueling trip into India, Lakshmi slowly discovers what's up and refuses to partake, but is drugged and forced to acquiesce. There are two scenes where it is clear what is happening, yet McCormick is anything but brutal and ugly while describing these brutal and ugly acts against an innocent child. Nevertheless, a mature and sensitive reader is called for, and the book is recommended more for high school aged readers and adults.

Written in free verse, an increasingly popular style of writing in the YA trade, SOLD will move you and anger you -- exactly McCormick's intent. It's beautifully written and worth all of the accolades it has received (it is a National Book Award finalist). Highly recommended.

This book tells the story of a young Lakshmi. She lives in poverty, and longs to help suppport her family. One day, she finds that her stepfather is shipping her away with her new "aunt." She is excited and nervous about leaving her family to make money. She makes a long journey across Nepal, and is finally turned in to Mumtaz, her new employer. She is shown her room which she finds filled with beds. It is later that night that she realizes she has been sold into prostitution against her will. How will she escape?

This is Patricia McCormick's second novel, and an amzing book. I would reccommend it to anyone over the age of ten. This book hurls you straight into Nepal and the surrounding area, providing a vivid view of Lakshmi's world. Sold is full of courage and hope. It is a powerful read.

This book is an eloquent introduction to the shame of the exploitation of children for sex. I have been involved in ending global female exploitation for 30 years. This short, accessible book is the best I have read to create understanding and awareness of this complicated problem. It is a first person narrative written in a simple style. In following the story of one girl, the book deftly explains how this horrible practice occurs and resists eradication. Parents may want to read the book first, but it is appropriate for most teen and adult readers. The sexual descriptions are not graphic or salacious, but focus on the impact on the victim. The wealth of details about life in the mountains and the heroine's journey are fascinating and open a door for American readers to a life far removed from our own experience, a life of beauty and poverty. The author carefully keeps her story from becoming too painful too read, while never flinching from sad realities. Read this in your book club, share it with your daughters, and also with your sons.

A life-changing book........2007-09-17

I read this book recently. It affected me very much. I now want to go to Calcutta to help these innocent girls. It is a horrifying story, but the truth is that the things that happen in this book are happening right now. And many girls do not have the happy ending like Lakshmi does.

Exellent text for introducing college students to Geography.......2000-05-20

I have used this text for approximately a year and found that the students are able to comprehend geography better with a systematic approach than a regional one. One of the things that sold me on this text was the auxillary material, particularly the webpage. The book is very easy to read and has excellent illustrations and photos. Needless to say, I highly recommend this text.

Yo, Yo, Yo, Pay attention I'm telling you about a great book. Sheesh!! Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan shows how the life of a young rich girl is turns upside down and how she struggles to keep her family afloat. To begin, Esperanza's life is perfect. She lives on a huge ranch in Mexico surrounded by servants. Then, in a stunning turn of events her father is murdered by bandits. After the death of her father, the greed of her uncles forces Esperanza, her mother and three of their former servants to move to California to find work. Unknown to Esperanza and her family is that her greedy uncles want the ranch for themselves. Esperanza's uncle asks for her mother hand in marriage so they can both have the ranch. Esperanza's mother is unwilling to do so. So seeking revenge the uncles burn down their beautiful house. In the process they injure Esperanza's Abuelita (Grandmother). After sending her to recuperate with her sisters, Esperanza, her mother, Alfonso, Miguel, and Hortensia go to California. Once in California they go to a work camp. No sooner had they gotten settled in, then Esperanza's mother is taken ill by Valley Fever. Too weak to continue working, she is sent to the hospital and Esperanza must take over work for her to pay the bills. She is also saving to bring Abuelita to California. If you wish to know what happens you must read the book for yourself. Mwah hah hah hah!! Believe you will like it (if you don't then you're just a little weird). =]

This has been one of my favorite books since I read it. It Is about a gilr who has luxury and over night all of that vanishes. She is forced to live in California and work hard. While she is ther she is trying to work. But then her mom gets sick and she works extra hard to pay her mom`s bills andraise money to bring her abuelita( grama) to her mom. She also has feelings for Miguel, a servant boy. I give this unbelievable book 5 stars. I would give it more if i could.

Fantastic, amazing, stirring, engaging, empowering. I could go on... This book is a treasure & I am so glad to have it in our personal library. We bought this for my daughter and I thought it was so good I had to read it aloud to my husband that same night. Kadir Nelson is always spectacular in his illustrations, and he once again rises to the top in this book. The story is very moving, and with a few words it accomplishes the task of taking you inside the emotions and the questions, fears, and faith within Harriet Tubman's heart. I am extremely satisfied with this book & happy to give it to my daughter. I hope she shares it with her children some day.

What I most appreciate about this book is the way it incorporates the role faith played in Harriet's life into the story of her leading daring escapes from slavery to freedom. Most of the history we learn in school attempts to secularize the truth about the people and events that we hold so dear, but this book does a phenomenal job in telling a more accurate, unbiased story of a remarkable woman. Illustrated by Kadir Nelson (who is GIFTED!!!!!), this is a welcome addition to any children's (or adult's, for that matter) library. I know am already collecting a slew of books

Scott O'Dell won the Newbery Medal for Island of the Blue Dolphins in 1961, and in 1976 the Children's Literature Association named this riveting story one of the 10 best American children's books of the past 200 years. O'Dell was inspired by the real-life story of a 12-year-old American Indian girl, Karana. The author based his book on the life of this remarkable young woman who, during the evacuation of Ghalas-at (an island off the coast of California), jumped ship to stay with her young brother who had been abandoned on the island. He died shortly thereafter, and Karana fended for herself on the island for 18 years.

O'Dell tells the miraculous story of how Karana forages on land and in the ocean, clothes herself (in a green-cormorant skirt and an otter cape on special occasions), and secures shelter. Perhaps even more startlingly, she finds strength and serenity living alone on the island. White people found her people and took them off island with lie of freedom. She escaped and remain on island with brother. Wolves eat brother. She walk alone and with a special wolf who is kind to her. one day she enter a water cave, found out the truth about her people fate. her people died and she survived. one day white people return to the island once again, she finally allow herself to join them. she became famous and she is buried in california. her clothing is in museum in Italy. wonderful story of her courage life.

I have to smile when reading these other reviews that say this book was one of their favorites as a child. It also was mine. I've read so many books, that most times the memory of the details within them grow dim, but not with "Island of the Blue Dolphins". I can still picture the breathtaking beauty of the island where Karana spent her growing years. I still remember her joys and trials of living alone for so long, after everyone had left. Her ingenuity and strength still amazes me. I can't wait until my children are old enough so I can enjoy this Newberry book with them. It's definitely one in a million.

Island Of The Blue Dolphins!.......2007-08-19

When I was on vacation at Martha's Vinyard I went to the book store and bought Island Of The Blue Dolphins for myself and I loved it!! I love it so much because of it's beautiful discriptions and details that I can picture in my mind. This book is beautifully written and has wonderful detail of natural survival of hunting, and making friends (Rontu and Rontu-Aru and the English girl Tutok, the fox and Won-a-nee the otter). How many wonderful and beautiful adventures of exciting survival can one indian girl have? I am 10 years old and recommend this book to whoever loves reading and is a fan of detail and beauty!!!!!!!!

The Secret Garden is a book about a spoiled girl who uncovers the mysteries of the house around her which include, but are not limited too, what is behind the wall, and why is it kept secret. It is a good classic, but girls will enjoy it much more than boys do.

This has always been one of my favorite books since childhood. When I read my first story in this book it gave me so much inspiration to use my imagination as a child should. A child's imagination is so real! This reality soon takes the form of abstract, which paves the road to anywhere he wants it to go - or not...

This edition is printed on really cheap, unappealing paper. I can't imagine anyone wanting to give this version of a children's classic as a gift, or even to read from it to a child yourself.

This book is the best book I have ever read. It's a light, happy book that I will treasure for the rest of my life. Ilove the theme of hope in the book, that will convince readers about the Magic inside themselves...if they hope. If they believe something will happen, it will. That theme is so beautifully conveyed. I couldn't put it down, and it is most definitely my new favorite book. A MUST READ!!!!!!!!
