Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great time reading and laughing.......2007-10-02

Lot of truths mentioned in the book... Wish there were more, especially when it comes to government entities... Just have to be diligent about "practicing" the tips and tricks provided.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-09-28

This is a great book that has a good level of scholarly support but written in an easy-to-read style that should appeal to most audiences.

5 out of 5 stars Stating The Unspoken.......2007-09-23

Everybody knows the abuse-of-power types that this book outlines. Too often companies/cultures put the onus on victims to adapt, and get-along. What that approach does is allow managers to NOT do their jobs - and that is to confront dysfunctional behaviors clearly and directly.

Dr. Sutton takes a no holds barred approach to defining culture up front. Letting the community know what is and is not acceptable behavior. I wish that he would create a study of companies that are this direct in dealing with behavioral problems, bring the concept along further with specifics of what works and what doesn't.

The "avoidance approach" clearly is not a true solution, but as he states in the book if management will not address the organization's asses, and you want to keep your job, it is the best option sometimes.

A few times in my life I've worked in environments where the assholes have kissed upward so much that they are well connected. And poorly skilled career bureaucrats looking to keep their position, single these emotionally inept people out as stars to be heralded - because heralding a well connected asshole makes you an ally. In each of those situations, I've watched the best people move on, managerial incompetence thrive, motivation deteriorate, and a fairyland scenario of pretending flourish. What a sad state of affairs that leads to.

Bringing the difficult concept of an actual asshole present in the mix, naming what is unspoken, is an essential element in this work. Further development of the idea, refinement of behavioral understanding could only continue to develop greater awareness of truly sly assholes that are skilled to be non-confrontational to those above them and non-approachable to those below.

A meeting with such people present vs. absent is like day and night. Personally experiencing this, I saw groups transformed from demotivated-lackluster-lifeless chair slugs to excited-active-contributors. Such culturally (negatively) controlling individuals cost an organization far more than can ever be measured.

The book is worth the read if only for the stories. But, the principles, the validation, are the real meat and potatoes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, and if you can't gift it directly, then throw a few copies into envelopes and drop them in your managements' mailboxes. It's about time the pretending to be nice facade gives way to true comprehension of what civility is, and the complete disregard for it will not be tolerated.

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2007-09-22

I urge everyone to read this book, whether they're in an office environment, or just dealing with day-to-day situations. I've bought three copies so far to give to co-workers and family, and I may need more!
The minute you open the book, you will SO recognize what is described!

5 out of 5 stars Accurate Potrayal of Many Work Environments.......2007-07-22

I commend Bob Sutton for publishing this book. It is apparent many jobs expect you to tolerate a coworker or superior whose behavior is off the chart yet protected and sometimes endorsed by management. The cost to a business is high and Bob did a great job of quantifying it. I highly recommend this book if you work in a toxic environment. Bob outlines some great strategies for succeeding in such an environment and discusses how to create policies to prevent one person's inflated ego from sinking the ship.

Book Description

From Stephen R. Covey's eldest son comes a revolutionary new path towards productivity and satisfaction. Trust, says Stephen M.R. Covey, is the very basis of the new global economy, and he shows how trust—and the speed at which it is established with clients, employees and constituents—is the essential ingredient for any high-performance, successful organization.

For business leaders and public figures in any arena, The Speed of Trust offers an unprecedented and eminently practical look at exactly how trust functions in our every transaction and relationship—from the most personal to the broadest, most indirect interaction—and how to establish trust immediately so that you and your organization can forego the time-killing, bureaucratic check-and-balance processes so often deployed in lieu of actual trust.

5 out of 5 stars Instant Classic - Top Shelf.......2007-10-08

Within minutes of reading this book I knew it was going to be great. The book explains how trust is the driving force behind all efficient, successful businesses. Covey gets into different types of trust and some self assessments to determine what areas the reader is strong or weak in. The book can be applied to business, community and family. Without a doubt it goes on the short list of powerful, life-changing books!

1 out of 5 stars All hype, no protein.......2007-09-19

Lots of anecdotes about the author's years in the business world. The author testifies that trust is great and makes things work. Little of substance in this book.

5 out of 5 stars Trust is Fundamental in Relational Management.......2007-08-24

Trust may be the missing ingredient for the relational management model to succeed, but Trust (confidence + credibility) is an outcome, not an input. To get a Trust outcome requires the right inputs and in this book, the next generation's spokesperson for the Covey dynasty, Stephen M. R. Covey, tells us what trust means as well as provides plenty of examples of how important trust is when it comes to delivering business performance.

M.R. uses the "ripple effect" metaphor with Self at the center and waves rippling from the inside out to describe the "5 Waves of Trust." Using this metaphor, the first trust wave is Self-Trust (credibility driven), then comes the Relationship-Trust (consistent behavior driven) wave, an Organizational-Trust (alignment driven) wave, a Market-Trust (reputation driven) wave, and finally a Societal-Trust (giving back or contribution driven) wave.

Staying with the emphasis on managing `Self' first, Covey then provides the substance of the Self-Trust wave; the 4 cores of Credibility - integrity, intent, capability, and results. For the Relationship-Trust wave he identifies 13 critical behaviors. With the remaining trust waves, the dialogue continues the book's main theme - understanding the cost of mistrust and the value of trust - as it discusses organizational alignment, market reputation, and societal contribution. As M.R. says, "the dividends of trust can significantly enhance the quality of every relationship on every level of your life". If you doubt that, read this book.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Trust Model.......2007-08-23

I speak around the world on building Trust in Selling. "The Speed of Trust" gives you a roadmap on how to master trust and the real economic value of trust.

Stephen gives you insights that anyone can use in their quest to excel at building trust in business relationships.

The Speed of Trust gets to the core roots of integrity and how 'trusted' leaders and organizations thrive.

Everyone should make the time to read this book."

1 out of 5 stars Author Lost My Trust Immediately, So Why Would I Listen To Anything He Has To Say?.......2007-08-01

I checked out this book from the library, read the 1st chapter - then immediately put it by the door so I could return it the next day. Why? Mr. Covey has no credibility himself. At least not with me. Here's why.

The 1st Chapter is basically his How I Learned About The Importance Of Trust saga. The problem is that it's an unintentional unmasking of a narcissist. His only admitted mistake in establishing trust with the Franklin side of the Franklin-Covey merger is his assumption that all the Franklin people were as well-informed on how great he is as the Covey people.

Mr. Covey then proceeds to take things further by showing how stricken he is with Rich Offspring Disease. He expresses shock that anyone assumed he was in top position at Covey just because of his name. Apparently Mr. Covey wants us to believe that he was interviewed for his job at Covey by people who had No Idea he was related to THE Covey family. Please.

Mr. Covey is one more person who has been handed the keys to the corner office without having to earn it first. His family is free to do that if they like. However, swallowing his insistence that he would've had the job even if he hadn't been related is too much to swallow.

A man who can't admit he's gotten breaks in life is not a man who can be trusted. Nor is he a man who knows much about trust. At least that's my opinion.

I guess we're also intended to believe that Mr. Covey got his book deal the hard way - soliciting agents and publishing houses with an unsolicited manuscript, with no help from or trading on the connections of his famous author father. Just like J.K. Rowling.

Does someone who trades in these delusions sound like he understands real, lasting trust and credibility?

Get a behind-the-scenes peek at Why We Want You to Be Rich in this video interview with Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki. They pair talk about their very different backgrounds, their mutual admiration for one another, and how they came up with the idea to write Why We Want You to Be Rich together.

Book Description

The world is facing many challenges and one of them is financial. The entitlement mentality is epidemic, creating people who expect their countries, employers, or families to take care of them. Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki, both successful businessmen, are natural teachers and have joined forces to address these challenges. They believe you cannot solve money problems with money. You can only solve money problems with financial education. Trump and Kiyosaki want to teach you to be rich.

"Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach him to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime."

They each could have written a book on the subject, but they chose instead to write a book together because of their shared passion for education and their desire to bring emphasis to the importance of financial education. In addition they have designated a portion of the profits from each book to be donated to charitable and educational organizations that also support financial education.

Why We Want YOU To Be Rich, Two Men — One Message was written for you.

most things i listen to or read atleast give me one good idea this is more like a life story rather than how to do anything with it. What a waste of my hard eraned time and money. Do your self a favor and stay away from this USELESS TOOL

4 out of 5 stars Noteworthy.......2007-09-21

This book is awesome. After reading it I have a whole new level of respect for Donald Trump. I salute he and Mr. Kiyosaki for their efforts and their willingness to share with their financial knowledge with the world. I agree, this should be a topic for our children in High School. Our children are our future; we must prepare them. If we don't who will?

1 out of 5 stars No substance, very self serving rants.......2007-09-12

Don't waste your money. This book offers no insight into anything. There are some motivational phrases but that's about it. Trump offers no insight into anything, and just brags upon himself and talks about his family. Kiyosaki's previous work is a lot better than this collaboration. Kiyosaki is starting to sound redundant. All his books are saying the same thing. There is absolutely no "how to" involved in this book. Terrible quality, don't waste your money.

2 out of 5 stars what's worse?.......2007-09-09

I don't know what's worse, the number of bad reviews by everybody here or the fact that so many of the bad reviewers have read Kiyosaki's other books and actually found value in them. If it took you this long to realize Kiyosaki is a shyster then no wonder you're still trying to figure out how to get rich!

5 out of 5 stars Meeting of the rich minds that should meet yours........2007-09-06

I have to admit that this was my first introduction to Robert Kiyosakis writing. I have to say that I was very impressed by the way he tells things in stories and explains things in detail. Then on the other hand you have the Trump perspective on the same issue as just described by Kioysaki, with the classic to the point very short and effective Trump wording. Once again this book could be used for much more than just investing tips and understanding the difference between those who make it and those who don't.

This book could be used to grow both personally and professionally. As a life and executive coach many of the things they talk about in this book are things that I work with small business owners and managers doing. Just a different angle on the how to break free of misconceptions that are known as: "common sense". Just like with many of the other Trump books this is not a step-by-step guide on how to become rich. From what I have now looked through of Kiyosakis books, they are not a step-by-step guide either. Even though they give you more of a guideline and teach you direct things on what to do and more importantly on how to think and break free of how most people do think.

The differences that struck me the most in this book is how the mindset of people that do make it is different from those who do not. It was a very entertaining and educating read, and I personally learned some new things from it that I have implemented not only into my daily life but also my businesses. The way the two use different approaches to the same topic opens up a whole new world of understanding, that is, if you do not quite get what the first part (Kiyosaki) is trying to explain the second part (Trump) will give the abbreviated version of it. Technically you could go though this book and read only one of the authors part and then read the second part as a second book. For it to make the most sense I would recommend that you go through it all at one time though.

Excellent book that I would recommend for more than just investors, would recommend it for entrepreneurs, people wanting to grow personally and professionally. If you are ready to shift the way you think in order to shift how you are doing financially this is a great buy!

5 out of 5 stars Companion DVD rocks my world!.......2007-10-05

I bought the cookbook in conjunction with the companion DVD (sold separately). Personally, I see the cookbook as mere support for the video instruction. Bought alone--it would seem overly simplistic and even possibly frustrating that various recipes overlap. As support for the DVD explanation it makes perfect sense. Considering the set is for beginners in the raw food lifestyle it is absolutely fantastic. For people who already know all about juicing and vegetable preparation--it can seem a little trite at times--but for the average American ignorant to all things raw--the dvd helps you understand without feeling stupid or lost in strange new vocabularies and unusual foods.
I would have to say--for anyone who complains about the cost of the machines often used in raw fooding--sell your stove--and that alone will more than pay for any and all raw food supplies. That's what I did.
I have a juicer, dehydrator, blender, citrus juicer, food processor, water distiller,etc...all for far less than my old stove. I wouldn't buy this item without the DVD. Together they are a magical pair, great for an experienced raw foodist like myself and for sharing with all my friends who wonder how I can survive and thrive on a raw food diet. The information is practical for a busy life on the go, full of variety and unique flavors without complexity, fast, and tasty. Not to mention recipes similar to old comfort foods to satisfy any old lingering cravings. 5 stars all the way!

5 out of 5 stars The title ain't lyin'.......2007-09-19

This is a fantastic beginner raw foods book. None of the recipes require anything more complicated than a blender and food processor. I taste-tested some of the recipes with a few omnivores with great results. The Walnut Paté and Flourless Chocolate Cake paid for the book alone.

Don't be discouraged by the worst book cover design I've ever seen. The recipes are great. They also need a better food stylist, lighting designer, photographer but only b/c they are not doing this book justice.

5 out of 5 stars awesome recipe book!.......2007-09-12

This book is great! The first recipe I made called the "Guacamole Sandwich" was the best thing I've ever tasted! I'll never think about eating cooked food again! All of the recipes are simple, fast and easy to understand.

5 out of 5 stars I love this book!.......2007-09-07

I am a not a hard-core raw foodist. I just think incorporating raw foods is a good way to work towards a healthy diet. I have a few raw food books but this one has the easiest recipes to prepare. It's perfect for a beginner and even as I progress to more complicated meals, I come back to these recipes again and again. I particularly love the "Not Meatballs w/ Zucchini Pasta," "Mediterranean Kale" and "Walnut Pate." There are good desserts too, such as brownies... yum.

Also recommended: Raw Food, Real World-- More labor intensive recipes but excellent; has beautiful photos. Further, if you are ever in NYC, you may want to check out Pure Food and Wine-- I was skeptical (What?! A raw food restaurant? Come on!) but the food was very tasty and the restaurant had a cozy atmosphere...

5 out of 5 stars Great guide for raw food newbies.......2007-08-30

I am new to the raw food world and found this book by Jennifer Cornbleet to be a fantastic introduction! The recipes were enticing, instructions were simple, and the previously daunting task (for me!) of making interesting food in the context of a raw diet was made not only effortless but delicious with the help of this book. The chocolate mousse and marinara sauce became immediate favorites of mine. The not-tuna pate in sushi is another meal I really look forward to. I have continued to be inspired to incorporate more and more raw meals into my diet from this book and recommend it to anyone else who is getting started in this healthy way of eating!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book and easy to read.......2007-01-12

I loved the one minute manager and I love the one minute sales Person. Sound principles in less than a minute. In the book he includes the most important thing that sales reps forget is to sell yourself first.

3 out of 5 stars Light on content, but focuses on important basics.......2006-05-09

I think this is a worthwhile book for someone who is beginning a sales career or has an antagonist attitude toward the profession, but wants to change that maybe because they are starting a business, doing consulting, etc. It is particularly good for people who don't feel comfortable with the whole idea of selling, but realize it's an important skill and is even required in daily life e.g. to sell an idea, convince a child to do something in their best interests, etc.

I have read some reviews of this book that sound harsh; I think that some of them may be overstated. While this book is short, simple and a quick read, it does a very good job of driving the basics home in a way that represents the sales profession well and honors an ethical approach to business. While the ideas themselves are simple, their application on a daily basis is not. If you read this book and embody the principles, it will make a big difference in your attitude toward sales as a profession, to your customers and to your personal income.

I think almost everyone reading this has probably been on the receiving end of a bad or unscrupulous salesperson. They unfortunately are not rare and give the profession a bad name. Their tactics are coercive and manipulative. This is not the kind of sales that this book talks about.

Personally, I think a good salesperson earns their money by helping a customer to understand their needs, asks powerful questions that bring out the implications of their customer's business situation and presents options that the customer will feel good about. They also build relationships based on trust, superior product knowledge and professionalism. They keep their commitments, follow through on promises and know the difference between persuasion and manipulation.

This book is a book that uses story to demonstrate what makes a professional salesperson in the best sense of the word. In a nutshell, it's about mastering the basics and doing them from the heart, not with a desire to manipulate. I think this is a worthwhile message to get out there and it really does work, espeically in the long run.

Golfers, bowlers and other athletes revisit the basics frequently, often practicing them on a daily basis. The same principle applies to sales and this book does a good job of driving home the importance of mastering fundamental sales skills.

I agree with some reviews that this book is light on content. However, if a potential salesperson learns even one thing from this book that helps them to do their job better, they will easily pay for the cost of a new copy. If they form one good habit as a result of reading it, it will pay for itself many times over. With that said, why not buy it used if you are skeptical and worried that it will be a quick read? The words are the same and you might learn something. (I do agree that this book is overpriced, however.)

Personally, I have read this book more than once and I have periodically reviewed the material throughout the years. I don't think it's as good as the "One Minute Manager," but it's good. It's difficult to be a GREAT salesperson. You need to study the principles, embody them and maintain your balance, integrity and ethical principles often in the face of tempting or difficult situations. Given this reality, I think a book like this that inspires is a worthwhile read. This is especially true in a profession where a lot of people slam doors in your face and you need to deal well with rejection every day.

3 out of 5 stars One minute stretches bit too hard.......2006-05-06

Compared with the monstrous success of "One Minute Manager", this sales version is kind of disappointed. The book still keeps the simple style to present main stages of sales with diagrams and big bold words. In each stage, it also tries its best to describe the process flow with necessary details.

However, I found it's kind of awkward to navigate in those diagrams for fast comprehension. Furthermore, the extended connection with goal setting, reward, and punishment weakens the emphasis of some key factors of sales: finding customer needs, telling a compelling story, and winning the trust.

Maybe salesmanship is the kind of art which is too hard to teach in a short book (just like the leadership). At this scenario, I would rather to read the big and great book for best descriptions (even as big as Michael Porter's giant volumes for competitive advantage). Otherwise, I'll just save the money to treat my sales mentor a Latte in the Starbucks (after browsing this book at the book store).

5 out of 5 stars The only sales book that I often re-read.......2006-01-28

It's a quick-read book that reminds me and helps me to focus on what's important in sales; the customer is a real living, breathing person who has needs that may be unrelated to the product that I'm selling and that they shouldn't be treated like a statistic or source of financial reward.

I often re-read this book when my needs and wants become the priority. It contains simple messages, but they are effective at refocusing my efforts. I usually see results (i.e. more sales, less stress) within a few days.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-09-04

I really enjoyed this book. It was very easy to read and has already helped improve my career in selling.

5 out of 5 stars The best , most elegant, but most difficult philosophy........2004-01-13

Managing and leading people is one of life's most difficult tasks. Mr. Williams understands that people are emotional, not logicaly, and his "Pushing Up People" philosophy is based on this tenet.

This book is not filled with Ivy League, Ph.d., fancy-schmancy paradigms, techniques or such. It is, however, filled with down-to-earth people skills that are effective (but difficult to master!)

    Book Description

How do I decide what to do with my life when there are so many things I want to do?

It is conventional wisdom that there is one true path in life for each of us. But what about those with a wide array of interests, a dynamic curiosity about the world, and an ever-renewing wellspring of passions? Margaret Lobenstine calls these people “Renaissance Souls,” and in this groundbreaking book, she offers a life-planning strategy in tune with their dynamic, change-loving personalities. Renaissance Souls often get stuck, moving from entry-level job to entry-level job, degree to degree, or hobby to hobby, unwilling to settle on just one thing to do “for the rest of my life.” Or, after achieving success in one field, they yearn for new challenges and begin looking around for something different. Yet they are also afraid that if they pursue their changing interests, they will have to give up on financial security, becoming “a jack of all trades and master of none.”

The Renaissance Soul, the first book devoted to this personality type, not only shows that it’s possible to design a successful, vibrant life built on multiple passions, but also gives readers the practical advice to do so. Lobenstine arms the reader with powerful life-design strategies, including how to:

*Understand the exciting and powerful difference between choice and focus

*Transform your day job so that it carries your dreams forward

*Manage your time the Renaissance Soul way

*Thrive on many interests without feeling scattered

    *Get paid for your passions

*Learn a new field without going back to school

*Get inspired by Renaissance Souls from ancient times to the present, from Leonardo da Vinci to Ben Franklin to Oprah Winfrey

Stocked with creative exercises, relevant resources, and interviews with successful Renaissance Souls, this profoundly inspiring guide will show readers the way to a richer, more fulfilling life—big enough to embrace all their dreams.

4 out of 5 stars Very validating and helpful, too!.......2007-03-23

I consider myself the very model of a Renaissance Soul: I love to read about lots of subjects; I used to garden quite fanatically; I'm in a knitting/crocheting phase right now; music is a big part of my life; and I've been doing agility and other training with our dog. Oh, and I have a day job, too! My answer to "what do you want to be when you grow up" changed so often when I was younger that it made my head spin! So I was hoping this book would help me sort out how to feel fulfilled and yet not too diluted pursuing my many interests.

And indeed it did. Here are just a few helpful tidbits I took from the book: You do have to choose a few interests at any given time, based on the things you value most, but those choices don't have to be forever. You should quit doing things that don't fit with the values you hold most dear. You can combine interests (for example, I like to write and cook -- maybe I should write about food?). You need to block time for your interests, but not be inflexible about which interest you pursue at a given time. There are lots of creative ways to get where you want to go, even if you pursue many different careers over time, without starting at Square One each time.

And so much of what the author said validated the way I approach life, even toward the end helping me understand why I sometimes feel unmotivated to do anything at all.

My only complaint is that the book starts to sound branded or jargony, with its Renaissance Soul Way and Focus Points Notebook -- kind of like the Chicken Soup series or the Finish Rich series. This Renaissance Soul finds that stuff kind of annoying. But the content was so rich and sensible that the annoyance was minor. This book has really gotten me thinking about what I need to do to more fully enjoy my many interests.

    5 out of 5 stars Wow! .......2007-01-09

This book helped me to understand myself so much better. Some parts of me that others and even myself had considered negative attributes, turn out to be good things. The Focal Points part was especially helpful, helping me to take the 3 zillion things I'm interested in down to 5 to concentrate on. I have have had a little sign on my refrigerator for years that says, " Not all who wander are lost." This book helped me feel very validated and feel better about myself. I'm very thankful to the author, Margaret Lobenstine. Thank you so much.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-11-09

Finally seeing in writing what has been spinning around in my head for years has been wonderful. It has helped me realize there is nothing "wrong" with me - I just think and do things differently than other people. I love the fact that I am constantly looking for new and different things to do and think about. This book has helped me realize that I do need to learn how to focus my energy on a few things and not get overwhelmed by all the opportunities around me.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!!!! Just what I needed!.......2006-10-18

I have spent quite some time trying to decide on one "forever" career and pick between my numerous intrests and hobbies becasue I just didn't have time for them all. I have read several standard time management books, and set up SMART goals and five year plans, only to change my mind or be unable to follow through till the end, mostly because I either lost interest or couldn't imagine doing this thing or that "forever." The last few months I have been unable to do much of anything; I have finally earned my Master's and have tons of new-found spare time, but couldn't decide what to fill it with, mostly because there were so many interesting things to fill it with! So I had been stuck in indecision and been extremely "unproductive." Then I found this book!!! This book has been helpful in so many ways, none the least because I finally know there isn't anything wrong with me! There are plenty of others like me who have so many interests that we just don't know where to begin. If this sounds like you, I would highly reccommend this book. Everything else I have to say has been covered by other reviewers, but I do want to add that after figuring out my focal points, I have been able to come up with much more creative and enjoyable ways of meeting my goals then I ever did trying to make everything a SMART goal. Enjoy- I did!

4 out of 5 stars Like looking in a mirror.......2006-09-24

Anyone who has three books going at the same time, who hates the thought of constraining him- or herself to just one "thing," or who gets swallowed up for hours in a bookstore will find themselves in this book.

Lobenstine does an excellent job of describing the "renaissance" personality and helping people who fall in this category to accept and embrace their "diagnosis." She offers concrete ways of working with -- instead of against -- our personality traits.

I love feeling like I'm not alone, and I appreciated some of the concrete suggestions, but I finished this book feeling a little lost as to what my next steps should be. How do I select my four (or five) focal areas when it's nearly impossible for me to choose ANYTHING? I would have appreciated a more structured approach to winnowing -- rather than narrowing -- my choices.

Overall, though, full of tons of great inspiration, if a little light on the practical side.

Prevention's Healthy One-Dish Meals in Minutes delivers on every promise in its lengthy moniker. Hard to believe, but you still need to add a word--delicious. This book is excellent for beginning, unsure, or disorganized cooks, as well as for anyone more experienced and health-conscious. The food is interesting middle-of-the-road fare, mostly using meat, poultry, and seafood in modest 4-ounce portions, and lots of non-fat or reduced-fat products. The Express Recipes, ready in 15 minutes, are amazing. In 20 to 30 minutes, recipes for intelligently updated classics will also win smiles.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Cook book.......2006-12-31

I have had this cookbook since Prevention first published it. Although I have many cookbooks, this one is my absolute all-time favorite for quick, healthy, delicious meals. Every week, when I plan my meals, I use at least 3 out of this book. I can't say enough good about it. The food is low fat, healthful, easy and quick to prepare and doesn't require alot of exotic ingredients. In fact there is a list in the introduction of the basic foods you need to have on hand to prepare the dishes in the books. There are even suggestions on the side for the use of leftovers. Get this one! I'm getting another for my daughter.

5 out of 5 stars One of my most-often used cookbooks!.......2004-05-17

My husband and I both love to cook, and we have about six dozen cookbooks representing a wide range of cuisines. Yet I keep coming back to this one cookbook again and again. I've had it for about five years, I think, and probably a month hasn't gone by that I haven't cooked at least a few recipes out of it -- which I can't say for most of our cookbooks.

The meals are generally pretty easy to prepare; very few of the recipes require any special equipment or techniques that would throw off the beginner. There's a nice variety, with at least a few real "keepers" in every category (e.g., soups, sandwiches, stir-fries, meat-and-potatoes, etc.).

I especially like the fact that they give nutritional information for each dish, although I wish they included fiber (and sorry folks, no carb counting). The dishes are lower in fat and lower in calories than usual, and yet they don't require a lot of silly, time-consuming techniques to do so.

Also, many recipes have sidebars with hints about variations on the recipe, or how to use the leftovers to make a new dish.

The one thing I find a little annoying -- or more, amusing -- is that some of the pictures do NOT look like the finished dishes. The funniest one is the recipe for microwave polenta: the picture clearly shows *grill marks* on the polenta, yet the recipe never involves an oven or broiler, much less a grill. But the important thing is that the recipes come out tasting good.

My two favorites are Moroccan Chicken and Indonesian Rice with Chicken. The only recipe that really bombed (and we've probably tried 80% of them by now) was the Javanese Tempeh Curry. But the picture looks so delicious... haha.

Buy this book while you still can; I'm planning to buy all the used copies I can find to give to all my friends and relatives.

5 out of 5 stars Really like this one.......2001-01-24

This cookbook is great for those of us who are busy, but who want healthful and tasty meals. The dishes are quick and easy to prepare and use common pantry items. The nutritional content is provided for each recipe, which is great if you are watching your calorie or fat (or any other) intake. Another feature I like is a "To Your Health" box that provides interesting and pertinent nutritional information about some of the ingredients used in the recipe. I rented this from the library but plan on purchasing it--even though it is out of print now!

    Book Description

As all these people become publishers – and even more become blog readers – the nature of the material being produced has moved into the realms of politics, professions and consumerism. For example, “Engadget” is one of the more popular blogs, a daily review of newfangled and exciting gadgets.

Blogs and Blogging in business are relatively new, so new that there simply are no rules. If there were rules, they would be changing and evolving too rapidly to codify. The best anyone can say is “here is some advice based on what is working today, combined with a good dollop of common sense.” As a result, this topic fits the What No One Ever Tells You series format perfectly!

Despite their “newness,” blogs have rapidly proven themselves in business. They serve several functions valiantly, including: communicating with customers, potential customers, and other stakeholders, as a research tool to help uncover what is being said about you, your company, your competitors, and your industry, and even as a type of broadcast medium as some are making significant money by monetizing blog traffic through advertising and other means. Instead of offering our advice on blogs and blogging in business, in this book we offer advice from 101 people who are successfully harnessing the power of blogging.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of Ideas.......2007-09-06

I've just started my blog on technology investigations called "Hack-igations". I was looking for ideas on how to make the most of my blog, and Demopoulos' book was a big help. It's full of stories about the experiences of other bloggers. The stories give me a sense for blogging culture; they help me fix realistic expectations about what my blog can and cannot do for me.

2 out of 5 stars More of the same .......2007-07-27

Unfortunately, this book is like so many books on blogging and other Web ventures:

    1. It promises "insider information."
    2. It's a thrown together compendium of the writings of Web marketing "gurus," most of whose only real experience is in marketing their own purported expertise in Web marketing.
    3. From reading it, one does glean a few good ideas.

... and like all the others, it will be useful to those who are new to the field. To use an old saying, it's like a Texas longhorn: a point here, a point there, and a lot of bull in between.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Toolbox For The Beginner Blogger.......2007-07-19

A book like this isn't about chewing through pages merely for the purpose of consuming knowledge on social networking. It's for the impassioned evangelist seeking to inspire others to action with nothing more than the seed of thought. The author has taken all these great relationships he's cultivated with winning bloggers around the world and compacted them into tiny, bite-sized chunks of expert advice. Based only on what I read in the book I've developed a blog (..) that within three weeks has attracted about 600 visitors including the attention of more than a few key industry people. And, the book is a great resource to review every once in a while to keep you focused on what works.

    3 out of 5 stars Worth a Quick Read.......2007-07-06

This book will take most readers about 101 minutes to read. It is designed in 101 very short chapters of about a page each. In fact each chapter it much like a Blog post. It is a series of interviews with commentary based on the author's discussions with 101 blog writers/experts. I got several ideas from it. It sent me off to the computer to find some of these bloggers. It inspired me to make a post or two. The content on podcasting is a handful of these short chapters. It is well worth a look, but it is not likely something one would read a second time.

5 out of 5 stars A solid effort by Mr. Demopoulos.......2007-05-10

As a person with an interest in blogging and podcasting, this book gave me enough information and anecdotes to keep me entertained and informed.

The book uses individual stories from a diverse set of people in the industry as jumping off points for each given topic area. Grounding each theme in a real person's story provides useful context. The short chapters keep things moving without any unnecessary clutter.

If you are a techno-savvy reader, not everything in the book will be new information, but the author has probed enough nooks and crannies of the topic to unearth more than a few gems.

It's well worth your time if you want to stretch your brain in this area.
