Book Description

James Maurice Gavin left for war in April 1943 as a colonel commanding the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division—AmericaÂ's first airborne division and the first to fight in World War II. In 1944, “Slim Jim” Gavin, as he was known to his troops, at the age of thirty-seven became the 82ndÂ's commanding general—the youngest Army officer to become a major general since the Civil War. At warÂ's end, this soldierÂ's soldier had become one of our greatest generals—and the 82ndÂ's most decorated officer. Now James GavinÂ's letters home to his nine-year-old daughter Barbara provide a revealing portrait of the American experience in World War II through the eyes of one of its most dynamic officers. Written from ship decks, foxholes, and field tents—often just before or after a dangerous jump—they capture the day-to-day realities of combat and GavinÂ's personal reactions to the war he helped to win. And provide an invaluable self-portrait of a great general, and a great American, in war and peace. The bookÂ's more than 200 letters begin at Fort Bragg in 1943 and continue to December 1945, as Gavin came home to lead the 82nd at the head of the Victory parade in New York. This correspondence constitutes the majority of GavinÂ's private wartime letters, but except for rare appearances in regimental newsletters, it has never before been published. In her Introduction, Epilogue, and Notes, Barbara Gavin Fauntleroy gives a privileged glimpse of the private man. Edited by Gayle Wurst, the book features historical overviews by Starlyn Jorgensen, a preface by noted Gavin biographer Gerard M. Devlin, and a foreword by Rufus Broadaway, GavinÂ's aide-de-camp.

THE GENERAL AND HIS DAUGHTER: THE WARTIME LETTERS OF GENERAL JAMES M. GAVIN TO HIS DAUGHTER BARBARA provides an excellent portrait of the American experience in World War II, telling of a commander who at the age of 37 became the 82nd Parachute Infantry's commanding general, and the youngest to become a major general since the Civil War. His letters were written from the field to his nine-year-old daughter Barbara and provide plenty of 'you are there' insights into the realities of combat. It's a 'must' for any serious, in-depth World War II collection, especially libraries specializing in memoirs and writings from participants.

5 out of 5 stars Straight From the Heart.......2007-06-03

This is an absolutely marvelous book. Barbara Gavin Fauntleroy has given us a very personal glimpse of a Soldier's Soldier who led his men from the front and was truly one of the great Generals of WW II. General Gavin's letters reveal the sensitivity and love that he maintained despite the strains of combat and command. One cannot read this book without feeling that you have shared so much of the personal experience as well as the love and devotion he showed to his daughter. It is a book that lifts the spirit and makes you respect the "Two Star Platoon Leader' even more.

A unique footnote to World War II, and an unusual view of a famous general

5 out of 5 stars Letters from a Father to his Daughter........2007-05-29

There are a lot of books written about World War II and its commanding generals. There are usually written by historians, or participants writing long after the battles. This book is different. There are the wartime letters written by Jim Gavin to his daughter Barbara. They begin in 1943 when Gavin, then a colonel left the states commander of the 505th PIR or the 82nd. At that time Barbara was nine.

There are approximately 200 letters included in the book. They were written on board ships, in foxholes and tents. They do not have the afterthoughts or 'point-proving' of books written later. They are the personal messages of a father to his daughter. They talk about the day to day realities of what Gavin was doing at the time, and about his personal reactions to combat and the war.

The book provides an insight into the man and the times that is rare to find.

4 out of 5 stars The War Time Letters of General James M. Gavin to his Daughter Barbara.......2007-05-13

Excellent insight into the humane side of a great military man. Good reading.

5 out of 5 stars Ox-Cart Man.......2007-01-19

This is one of my family's all-time favorite children's books, with lovely, quiet pictures and a calm tone in the text. We love the feeling of the "circle of seasons" that it gives, as well as a glimpse back into a simpler era. The story also portrays the ethic of working hard and being rewarded for it. I read it to all five of our children as they were growing up. This Christmas I bought it for our 23 year-old daughter, who had asked for it. She doesn't have children yet; she just loves the book and wanted it for her own library. I was pleased to see Donald Hall's poem, "Ox-Cart Man"-- almost identical to the words in the children's book-- in Garrison Keillor's book called Good Poems, an anthology of poems he selected and arranged.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining in a peaceful way.......2007-01-07

Gave this account of a year in the life of a farm family to my 2-1/2 year old grandson. Worked, because the first time he asked his father to "read it again." Appealed to me, since it shows a natural cycle of growing/making things, selling them, and starting over. We may not operate quite this way, but it may still provide understanding of the world to a youngster. Appealing pictures, peaceful telling - perhaps the most "exciting" event is the farmer kissing his ox good-bye at market. Maybe a good bedtime story.

4 out of 5 stars Cycle of Nature.......2006-11-24

This picture book superbly illustrated by Barbara Cooney is 37 pages, of which 22 are illustrations with or without text. The text is provided by Donald Hall and teaches the law of the harvest by showing how a New Englander filled a cart with surplus harvest and handmade items to sell at Portsmouth market, which was a ten-day journey. The reader learns that in March the maples were tapped for their syrup and that in April the sheep were sheared. Their fields and gardens yielded potatoes, turnips, and cabbages, while their orchard gave apples. All these things were put into the ox-cart and taken to market. At market, everything was sold including the cart and the ox.

Then the New Englander went shopping for manufactured goods, some imported from England, as well as for sweets. Carrying everything in a newly-purchased kettle tied to a pole slung over his shoulder, he trekked back to his farm. The family received their practical gifts and went right to work with their new tools by sewing, whittling, cooking, stitching, carving, sawing, splitting, weaving, embroidering, tapping, shearing, and knitting all of winter. When Spring arrived, they planted their fields. By caring for their tools and fields with diligence, the result will no doubt be another bountiful harvest.

This work is an absolute delight. I cannot remember a children's book that visually held my interst as long as this one did and has (I must admit to having purchased a copy after reading in in or school library and have in on our coffee table). The story is simple, so simple that it almost has a hypnotic effect. The turning of the seasons, the continuance of life, a life in much simpler times. This, for some reason, is quite comforting to me. I have read and reread this one to all four of my grandsons and each have enjoyed it in their turn. This work gives you a double treat and to my way of seeing it, a double benefit for your child. Not only is the story well written, to the point, and almost poetic in it's rhythem, but they, the children, are exposed to some wonderful art work in a style or genre, they might not otherwise encounter. Highly recommend this one.

This collection of letters from across the United States written in each child's own hand, offers active duty soldiers and veterans and their families comfort, reassurance, and a delightful dose of humor.

This collection of letters was both colorful in its words and in its pictures. Whether children are asking our soldiers to please come home safe, what guns they use in Iraq, or telling them about the pets they have in their homes, these children are all very aware of what is going on in Iraq; they know they are there fighting for our freedom and risking their necks to do it.

As you turn the pages, taking a look into each child's perception of the war, and learning what questions they desire to ask of our soldiers, you'll notice you have an array of emotions. Laughter is not a stranger as you read through these letters, especially when you read something like "how do you take a bath?" or "I have lots of friends here. Some are tall like a house, and some are short, but I like them anyways." Other times you feel your heart wrench at how considerate some of the letters are; "Try not to get hurt, ok? One thing the earth doesn't need is more hurt people." Or "You make me confident in everything. You make me feel safe in what I do." Statements like these are raw and real emotions that children are pouring out in their letters to these men and women in Iraq.

It is so inspiring in reading about the concerns children can possess for people they don't even know, as well as the innocence of a child when they ask the most simple of questions because they are truly interested in what type of food these men and women like to eat, and where they live, and what they do in their spare time when they are not being soldiers.

I found myself laughing on one letter, and crying on the next. Not only is this book a compilation of letters to our soldiers, I believe it is also a small piece of the positive side of life; an inside scoop into a child's creative mind as it spills over onto the letters with which they write; "I hope this letter from me will make you feel at home. I hope this letter will make you feel a little less scared. ...Whoever gets this letter, please don't die. If you do die with my letter so that will let the world know that I care for each and every one of you out there in the war."

I think Tim, says it best in his letter when he says "if you get hurt, make sure you get to a doctor!"

4 out of 5 stars A warm tribute filled with children's sincerity.......2007-06-05

"I pray for you every night before I go to bed."

While volunteering to assemble care packages for our troops serving in Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom, Barbara Warfield Baldwin and her daughters came across heartfelt and compelling letters to the troops from local children that served to brighten the Baldwins' days. Dear Soldier is the compilation of many of these letters and pictures.

Meant to uplift the troops' spirits as well as boost the morale of the general public, Dear Soldier will have you reading out loud to whomever is in the room. The honesty and sincerity of kids is great. With phrases like "I hope that yall find that Osama Bin ladin," and "My brother says that he wants to be in the war. I'm thinking I might join him," you can see why these letters mean so much to our troops. And with lines like, "you might think I'm stupid but I made it to forth grade so I make A's and B's, so there," you can't help but laugh and share.

These letters and drawings are photocopied so you don't only get to read them, but see the handwriting and erase marks. Seeing what is important to the children as they were writing is precious. My primary criticism is that for some reason a couple of letters were repeated in the compilation. But don't let that sway you.

Armchair Interviews says: This is a great book to give as a gift, especially to our serving troops.

I saw this book in the store, read part of it...and cried..lol. This is one of the most precious things I have ever seen! As an Army wife, and a soon to be teacher, I got this book to use at home and in the classroom. AMAZING!

5 out of 5 stars Such a Great Little Book.......2007-02-16

I bought five copies to hand out to several military units. They are morale boosters. Those kids are awesome and so endearing. Thanks doesn't do justice the range of emotion their letters caused.

5 out of 5 stars Awesom book.......2007-01-01

This is such a wonderful book and as vet of Viet Nam War I really appreciate the authors for doing this book. Whether we support the war or not we need to make sure the veterans aren't treated awful like many from my generation were. These are brave men and women who are at war to help keep our country free. I personally do support the war and President Bush's efforts to defeat the terroists. I have been involved helping veterans over 30 years.

Fans of Dorothy L. Sayers's fictional hero, Lord Peter Wimsey, who are hoping for his creator's insights into his character, the writing of mysteries, or the creation of literature in general will find little to satisfy their curiosity in this second volume of Sayers's letters from 1937 to 1943. In fact, there's virtually no mention of novels, or the writing of them, since Sayers had pretty much traded in Lord Peter for religious commentary and the theater by 1937. The Letters of Dorothy L. Sayers contains a great deal of correspondence concerning theology, Sayers's efforts in the theater, and even some letters to her illegitimate son, John Anthony.

5 out of 5 stars From Wimsey to religion.......2000-03-28

Dorothy L Sayers was much more than a writer of detective novels. From the late 1930's until her death, she was also in great demand as a writer and speaker on religious issues. She wrote a series of radio plays on the life of Christ called "The man born to be king", and the sensation caused by these made her into an instant "expert" on religion in the eyes of the public and the media of the day. The letters dealing with the writing and production of the plays are fascinating. The uproar caused by an actor portraying Jesus was unbelievable (Christ hadn't been portrayed on stage since Oliver Cromwell's time), and Sayers was accused of blasphemy because she used everyday language instead of only the words of the Bible. There's very little about her detective novels in this volume of letters, but I still found them full of interesting insights into the life of a writer. Sayers' very distinctive voice comes through, and her letters to friends are lots of fun. Her joy at receiving a lemon as a present during the war (unobtainable due to rationing) is wonderful, as are her discussions with her husband on the best way to use this treasure. A fascinating collection of letters from one of my favourite writers.

    5 out of 5 stars A Gift Of Love.......1998-04-02

I received a copy of this book from my daughter who was about to celebrate her 33rd birthday. The Amazon gift wrap was lovely. And she wrote and told me this was a gift for giving life to her and more. And I began to read the essays and the letters and the poems. And although each author had a different mother, there seemed to be a universal theme....love. And in some cases, lack of love. These are letters and poems that one can read and re-read and share with friends because there is so much thought and insights into that special unique relationship between mother and daughter. To have received this book from my daughter makes it all the more special....but the collection is filled with words that make my memories spin and I am happy that my daughter has always told me what she has meant to say...Mothers can send this book to their daughters. Daughters should send this book to their mothers. And if any man wishes to know why the relationship between mother and daughter is so very special, he can read this book too. Thanks to the editor who compiled the various works! This book is a keeper!

Barbara (and Inga) have done a superb in offering a great textbook for learning Italic calligraphy; one of the most popular scripts for lettering artists. If you're a beginner you should buy this book just to learn discpline and the basics; if you're an advanced calligrapher than you should buy this for the historical portions and to just say that you own something by the marvelous Barbara Getty and Inga Dubay -- two outstanding and legendary Pacific Northwest calligraphers!

This book has been quite helpful in learning the fundamentals of itallic Calligraphy. It not only gives you a step by step guide on forming letters, it also gives you a good background in the history of Calligraphy and an understanding of its significance. I especially enjoyed the variations it gives on different letters, allowing the student of Calligraphy to formulate his or her own unique style.

      Book Description

Our most remarkable writers share what has influenced them the most: each other.

Many of the illustrious contributors to The New York Review of Books have had deep and abiding relationships–both personal and intellectual–with other poets, writers, artists, composers, and scientists of equal stature. The Company They Kept is a collection of twenty-seven accounts of these varied friendships–most of them undeniably fraught with “idiosyncratic complexities.”

One of the sweetest and funniest is Prudence Crowther’s memoir of her romance, at age thirty, with the seventy-four-year old S. J. Perelman (“As a friend of mine put it, ‘Yeah, too bad you couldn’t have met when you were twenty six and he was seventy–or when he was thirty, and your parents hadn’t met yet.’”). Darryl Pinckney recalls his unsettling stint as Djuna Barnes’s handyman. Susan Sontag’s piece on Paul Goodman is more about how they never hit it off; Seamus Heaney’s remembrance of Tom Flanagan has all the melancholy affection of a bereft and beloved son. Larry McMurtry and Ken Kesey were grad students together–for years afterward, McMurtry recalls, the Merry Pranksters would show up unannounced, and throw his family and neighbors into hilarious chaos. Derek Walcott recalls his parting of the ways with Robert Lowell, and of their bittersweet reconciliation. And Robert Oppenheimer writes that he wants to dispel the clouds of myth surrounding Albert Einstein: “As always, the myth has its charms; but the truth is far more beautiful.”

From Anna Akhmatova’s dreamlike description of wandering through Paris with the impoverished Modigliani to Joseph Brodsky’s account of his first meeting with Isaiah Berlin (from which he returned to report, around the kitchen table, to Stephen Spender and W.H. Auden), these pieces are tantalizing glimpses into the lives of those who have made The New York Review of Books into what Esquire magazine calls "the premier literary-intellectual magazine in the English language."

      Book Description

Seabiscuit was a nation's treasure. The 1920s may have been the Golden Age of Sports with Babe Ruth and Jack Dempsey among others dominating the scene but during the mid to late 1930s, one sports legend gave resolve and enjoyment to a nation emerging from the Great Depression. Seabiscuit was that sporting icon. The story of Seabiscuit as told so eloquently by Laura Hillenbrand has dominated the book scene for two years. Seabiscuit, Charles and Marcela Howard, Tom Smith, Red Pollard, and George Woolf have once again become a part of our national conscience. Now comes another gift. In 1975, Barbara Howard received from her great aunt, Marcela Howard, a box of letters written to Seabiscuit and his owner Charles Howard. Some were letters of congratulations, a suggested name for a foal, a birthday card, or a valentine.

5 out of 5 stars To Seabiscuit With Love.......2003-12-25

After reading and admiring Laura Hillenbrand's book, and seeing the movie, I was eager to learn more about the world's response to Seabiscuit during his lifetime. These letters illuminate the feelings he evoked in people.

Through printing exact reproductions - many handwritten - of the fan mail to the Howard family and Seabiscuit in 1939-40, a unique glimpse into the lives and attitudes of America is shown. The content of the letters, notes, and poems is fascinating, and made moreso by being able to view it in the original format - including the stationery, stamps and envelopes.

It's a very enjoyable read. I loved it! Thanks, Ms. Howard, for sharing your family's collection with us.
