Book Description
The publication of The Army of Flanders and the Spanish Road in 1972 marked the birth of the "new military history", which emphasized military organization--mobilization, pay, supply, morale and, above all, logistics--rather than military "events" such as sieges and battles. Constantly cited since its first publication in English (with translations into Spanish and Dutch), this revised updated second edition includes new sources and references but otherwise remains faithful to the original edition. The Proudest Day: India's Long Road to Independence
Anthony Read , and David Fisher Manufacturer: W. W. Norton & Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0393318982 |
Amazon.com
The birth of the Indian National Conference in 1885 served as the formal beginning to India's long struggle to evict the British. When independence finally arrived on August 15, 1947, India soon found itself fighting yet another enemy: itself. Without a solid blueprint from which to draw its own government and infrastructure, India's internal struggles meant enormous suffering for the population. As Anthony Read and David Fisher clearly point out, much of the turmoil resulted from the inability of Indian leaders to work in concert, pitting India and Pakistan against one another before they could even begin to celebrate their freedom. It's evident the authors find much to admire in India, but their evenhanded analysis prevents even a touch of the hagiographical; even the failings of the legendary Gandhi are expanded upon. Nehru, Lord Mountbatten, and the Muslim leader Jinnah are also skewered for their poor choices and lack of vision and leadership. In all fairness, the transition to democratic self-rule was no small task, particularly in regard to dealing fairly with the multiple ethnic and religious groups that abound in India, but the authors elaborate on the past sins of the Indian government, because it is within these failings that the true story of modern India is found. These long gazes into the past also help determine what the impact of the current crisis within the Congress Party may be now that Hindu nationalists and religious fundamentalists are in control.Book Description
In 1835, Lord Macaulay, in his Minute on Indian Education, had prophesied that the eventual self-rule of India would be "the proudest day in British history." And yet when independence came on the stroke of midnight of August 14, 1947, events unfolded with a violence that shocked the world: entire trainloads of Muslim and Hindu refugees were slaughtered on their flight to safety --not by the British, but by each other. Macaulay's dream had become a flawed and bloody reality. The Proudest Day is a riveting account of the end of the Raj, the most romantic of all the great empires. Anthony Read and David Fisher tell the whole epic story in compelling and colorful detail from its beginnings more than a century earlier; their powerful narrative takes a fresh look at many of the events and personalities involved, especially the three charismatic giants --Gandhi, Nehru, and Jinnah --who dominated the final, increasingly bitter thirty years. Meanwhile, a succession of British politicians and viceroys veered wildly between liberalism and repression until the Raj became a powder keg, wanting only a match.Customer Reviews:

A delightful and instructive overview of British India........2000-08-19
A Richly Detailed Story. . ........1999-07-10
Much of the author's criticism of the main protagonists is not new. The myth of Gahndi's pacifism is debunked. In Nehru's uncompromising idealism, the authors lay the blame for eventual partition. Jinnah is the consumate lawyer, manipulating and playing with legal vagueries. But it is for Mountbatten and the Congress hard-liners that the harshest criticism is reserved. Partition comes down to one missed chance in the summer of 1946. Whether or not in the emotional-charged atmosphere of Indian-Pakistan history you accept this proposition, the authors succeed in leaving that bitter feeling in the reader's mind- that partition, the holocaust that ensued after August 1947 in Punjab, and years of ensuing conflict could have all been avoided even after 50+ years of heated struggle if only in that last instance, the main protagonists laid aside their prior histories, showed their courage and seized the moment.

Reluctant Revolutionaries: New York City and the Road to Independence, 1763-1776
Joseph S. Tiedemann Manufacturer: Cornell University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0801432375 |
Book Description
The question of why New Yorkers were such reluctant revolutionaries has long bedeviled historians. In an innovative study of New York City between 1763 and 1776, Joseph S. Tiedemann explains how conscientiously residents labored to build a consensus under difficult circumstances. New Yorkers acted the way they did not because they were mostly loyalist or because a few patrician conservatives were able to stem the tide of revolution but because the population of their city was so heterogeneous that consensus was not easily achieved. Differences within the city's pluralistic population slowed the process of hammering out a course of action acceptable to the large majority. The consensus that finally emerged had to be cautious rather than militant in order to unite as many people as possible behind the revolutionary banner. Ultimately, the time it took was far less significant, Tiedemann notes, than the fact that New York proceeded to declare independence, and went on to become a pivotal state in the new nation. In framing his argument, Tiedemann explains the limitations of interpretations offered by both progressive, New Left, and consensus historians. Citing the work of scholars as diverse as Walter Laqueur, Theda Skocpol, and Louis Kreisberg, Tiedemann pays close attention to the dynamics of British colonial rule and its impact on New York.

Also important, Mr. Leon has surveyed a wide variety of ethnic groups from every corner of the vast African continent which gives ther reader an opportunity to appreciate similarities and differences between African peoples.
The book is illustrated with discussion-provoking black and white photos, and includes maps, a bibliography, notes and an index. Terms from African languages are defined in the text, but a glossary would have been nice.
Book Description
Today it seems like every dinner conversation revolves around real estate-buying, managing, rehabbing, or selling properties. Americans have recognized that investing in real estate can be a good way to build wealth, diversify their investment portfolios, and create financial security. Yet real estate investing isn’t a surefire strategy, and it isn’t for everyone. Making Money in Real Estate gives readers answers for many types of investments-single-family fixer-uppers, vacation properties, real estate investment trusts, raw land, mixed-use properties, condos, and co-ops. For each type, the author shows investors how to estimate the time, money, and work involved. Then she provides checkpoints (including financial tips and contract safeguards) to ensure that every investment is a good one. Janik also covers key intuitive skills that real estate investing requires, such as negotiating effectively and recognizing a good deal. In their love affair with real estate, Americans need guidance to make commonsense decisions, minimize risk, and maximize their profits. This powerful book will help them do just that.

Great for the beginning investor!.......2001-01-16
However, as with many real estate investment books, and perhaps understandably, it fails to go beyond the basics. If you are looking for a treatise on in-depth real estate investment analysis, this book probably is not for you.
With that said, it was a quick, fun, and inspiring read. I would certainly recommend it to someone is just starting out.
