Customer Reviews:
Best Resource Available!.......2006-11-13
Whether you sew doll clothes or Victorian costumes, this book is the best resource to have! It covers the entire Victorian era, describing the chosen costumes in great detail. It discusses the general shapes of each period, what undergarments were used, what fabrics were popular, what details to add, what accessories to use.
There is a wonderful section on handsewing, showing you how to use period sewing techniques, plus sewing specific to the Victorian period, such as piping. Another section shows you how to finish your seams -- French seams, flat felling, etc. The patterns are clear and easy to size up or down. The diagrams are excellent, clearly showing you each step.
I make oaak fashion dolls, and sew Victorian costume for myself, and I find myself opening this book at some point during every project!
A Rave Review.......2006-05-27
Sewing Victorian Doll Clothes is a wonderful source book for historical costumes with a wide range of workable patterns.
It is a wonderful reference for the doll collector who is interested in recreating historically correct clothes for china or bisque dolls. The range of styles in broad, and the instructions are clear even for the novice at sewing. Without question, this is one of the finest books on this subject that it is possible to find. It is worth every dollar spent.
Delightful and Helpful - a must for Heirloom sewing!.......2001-12-27
This is a wonderful book with many illustrations. There are extensive patterns, wonderful details, could go a little more in-depth with the patterns and have a little more variety of Victorian clothing. A wonderful book, it is a must for the heirloom sewing library!
This is the pattern book I have needed for years!.......2000-08-23
I have now tried most of the patterns in this wonderful book, and even with my limited sewing skills, I have been very pleased with my results. I have particularly enjoyed the tips for constructing clothes without patterns. The simple smock dress idea works well for my Ginnys, as well as for my composition baby dolls and small antique bisque dolls. I'm looking forward to learning to make hats and purses. I have a stack of old leather gloves just waiting to be made into the darling shoes pictured in the last chapter of the book.
The BEST book on sewing doll clothes on the market!.......1999-07-27
The book is a must-have for anyone wanting to sew reproduction clothing for dolls. This book includes wonderful color plates of the antique dolls chosen for the study. You can clearly see every detail of the wardrobe. There are many underwear items included : corsets, hoops, bustles, etc. There is a large detailed explaination of each dress, listed by the color plate. Then, there is a large section which not only tells you how to sew a duplicate of the original, but which includes much useful information about the period of time the dress represents. Finally, there is a wonderful bibliography and an excellent section on how to hand sew the items, carefully detailing descriptions of each stitch used.

Book Description
Rediscover the delightful, surprising-and irresistibly naughty-Victorian art of "furtling" in this interactive picture book that puts the underside (and more) of Victoriana at your fingertips. Practiced a century ago by Victorian upper classes, "furtling" is a wondrous erotic journey into the human hand's secret folds and furrows, one that delivers pleasure most vitalizing, lifts melancholy from the desponding mind, and restores wounded spirits.
Just place the book on a flat surface, position the fingers in the appropriate manner, life the page, and--Eureka!--behold The Heavenly Twins, Toungue & Cheeks, The Crocodile, or Happy Valley. In all, thirteen meticulous black-and-white engravings of turn-of-the-century ladies and gentleman-each with a die cut in exactly the right place-will profoundly change one's relationship with the hand.
79,000 copies in print.
Customer Reviews:
Juvinile fun.......2004-05-01
Ok, so the hand jokes in this book are a tad sophmoric, but hey, I still laughed. Also, some of the more risque hand poses aren't included. This is pretty tame, but dang funny.
This is the STUPIDEST book I've ever bought on Amazon.......2004-02-18
I bought this book because the reviews were so favorable, but sure wish I hadn't!!! Its incredibly stupid and a waste of money. Unfortunately, its been over a month or I would return it! Unless you like making finger puppets that look like butts, DON"T BUY IT!
The ultimate funny coffee table book!.......2000-06-13
This book is a hoot! I found it at a bed and breakfast I stayed at on their coffee table and it gave me quite a few chuckles. I guess this is what victorians did before tivo....
The perfect accent for your parlor table.......1997-12-10
The Victorians were prudes? You'll never look at old engravings with an innocent mind again. Great fun!

This is nicely made, pretty sturdy, and perfect to take along for traveling to relatives houses or on any vacation. Folded up it takes up almost no space, but provides for fun pretend play when opened up.
Victorian Glory.......2007-01-14
It was in perfect condition and made a very good gift for my 6yr old granddaughter.
A Charming Gift!.......2007-01-12
For dollhouse lovers, this is a real gem! It's the size of a tall book, GREAT for taking on trips! Opens up to full-circle dollhouse. We love the old fashioned, Victorian style. It's sturdy, well-made and able to light up a child's face in a big way!
Victoian Doll House was a hit.......2007-01-09
I bought 2 of the Victoria Doll houses as gifts for my 2 great nieces. I was present when one of my nieces opened her gift and played with it. She is 6 years old. She loved it. She played with that doll house the whole time. She told me it was the best present she ever received.

Customer Reviews:
Excelant reference.......2007-06-28
This book is for lovers of these beautiful dogs or those interested in their beginnings. Very informative book, and lots of colored pictures to help with ones selection of a spaniel. I recommend as this be number 1 book of choice about these Staffordshire dogs.
STAFFORDSHIRE SPANIELS:SUBSTANTIAL TEXT & BEAUTIFUL ILLUST.......2001-11-30
This terrific book traces the history, manufacture, and various styles of the traditional Comforter Spaniel made in Staffordshire, England during the 19th century. It is a comprehensive study with substantial text and beautiful illustrations, and it is written in a style that keeps the reader turning pages. As a collector and dealer, I have found this book to be extremely useful - I can't keep enough copies in my store, and I keep it at the top of the stack on my coffee table at home. This is a perfect reference and a perfect gift for anyone who appreciates the primitive beauty of the well-known Staffordshire Spaniel. Be sure to check out its companion text, Staffordshire Animals, by the same author and publisher!
A Great Read with Lots of Info and Beautiful Illustrations.......2001-11-04
This book, the only one I know of that deals specifically with Staffordshire Spaniels, is an invaluable reference for collectors and dealers alike. It offers a wide range of over 285 superb full-color illustrations, descriptive captions, and suggested values that reflect various market and regional trends. The book is packed with important historical and production information. Sections on reproductions and tips for collectors round out this comprehensive and informative study. This is NOT just another Staffordshire picture book or boring catalog of image after image. This specialized book offers so much more. The author's writing style is reader-friendly and touched by the sense of fun that Staffordshire collecting is meant to be. Synonymous with Staffordshire figures, Spaniels are the quintessential Victorian decorative accessory -- no Victorian interior is complete without at least one pair, and no collector or dealer's library is complete without this book! Enjoy!
Book should not be used to determine value of pieces!.......1998-08-29
This book contains nice photographs. However, the prices of pieces are unrealistic. Some quotes seem extremely low and other extremely high. The author doesn't mention the condition of the piece when quoting prices The greatest factor the effects the price of pottery is the condition of the piece. A price should never be given without a discription of the condition of the piece. The book would be a nice reference for a novice collector. But price information should be ignored.

This is sooooo cute. I am always awed by the creativity of artists. It makes you wish you could live in this beautiful home. Absolutely eye candy for the senses!
Brilliant Book/Toy.......2005-09-24
After returning from a visit to Dublin's wonderful doll house museum,we purchased this book for our 10 year old daughter. We were a bit nervous that this book may be too young for her, but found it much to the contrary, she absolutely loves the book and has enjoyed playing with it for hours.
three-dimensional victorian dollhouse.......2004-06-02
I bought this book for my 5 year old daughter. We travel often, and it is wonderful for long airport delays or downtime in the hotel room. The book is very sturdy and has wonderful details inside. The bonus-it allows her to use her imagination! Very easy to pack.
Pretty neat book.......2000-12-27
I got lucky and found this book in the children's section of mylocal large book retailer. (It was in the pop-up book section.) Youtie the front and back cover together and you get a paper 3ddollhouse. This is a GREAT gift for a young niece or neighbor whodoesn't have a dollhouse or who is crazy about them! I gave a bookvery similar to this years ago to my girl and she loved it. She stillhas it to this day. My only complaint about the book is that itdoesn't include any paperdolls with it. You might want to purchase aset of victorian paperdolls that fit the scale of this dollhousebefore you give it to the special little girl in your life.

The colors are too muted and the paper is flimsy. This is not on the same level as his GIBSON GIRLS.
