In undertaking a spiritual life, we must make certain that our path is connected with our heart, according to author and Buddhist monk Jack Kornfield. Since 1974 (long before it gained popularity in the 1990s), Kornfield has been teaching westerners how to integrate Eastern teaching into their daily lives. Through generous storytelling and unmitigated warmth, Kornfield offers this excellent guidebook on living with attentiveness, meditation, and full-tilt compassion.

Part of what makes this book so accessible is Kornfield's use of everyday metaphors to describe the elusive lessons of spiritual transformation. For example, he opens with "the one seat" lesson taught to him by his esteemed teacher. Literally it means sitting in the center of a room and not being swayed or moved by all the people and dramas happening around you. On a spiritual level it means sticking "with one practice and teacher among all of the possibilities," writes Kornfield; "inwardly it means having the determination to stick with that practice through whatever difficulties and doubts arise until you have come to true clarity and understanding." The same could be said for this "one book." Among all the spiritual self-help books, this is a classic worth sticking with and returning to--a highly approachable teacher that can only lead to greater clarity and understanding. --Gail Hudson

5 out of 5 stars The best book Ive ever read!!!.......2007-10-17

I read this book a while ago so I wont go into intricate details. However what I will say is that its the best book Ive ever read. As my friend described it ' its a great Dhamma book'.

Jack Kornfields writes so wonderfully. His words to me are true wisdom.

I have read a lot of books on spirituality etc however for me this is what I would call my spiritual bible!! A wonderful book of wisdom!!!!

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!.......2007-09-03

This quickly became one of my all time favorite books. It has great techniques for meditation and beautiful and funny story's about
following your heart and the Dharma. A must read for anyone who meditates and/or is interested in Buddhism.

5 out of 5 stars Compassionate with Psychological Understanding.......2007-05-17

"A Path with Heart" gives a unique Buddhist perspective to heal ourselves emotionally and psychologically. It asks us to accept emotions fully, experience them at a deep level and then to release them. The path is not one of denial but of acceptance and also letting go. Jack Kornfield's words are filled with compassion and equanimity, which are two important facets of our spiritual journey filled with both perils and promises.

This book resonated at a deeper level for me and I found the same inspiration in Nexus: A Neo Novel which is an experiential journey to heart-centered living. Both books offer a path of compassion, which is important in our age. We can share the wisdom of these books within our circle and help transform lives.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable reading!.......2007-05-16

I have had to buy this book several times because I keep giving them out! Enjoyable and written in a format that conveys a spiritual message to any faith. This is a book you will pick up and read time and time again.

5 out of 5 stars An example of the optimism and realism of Buddhism.......2006-11-26

--Just want to add another five-star vote for this deserving, positive, practical, solid, encouraging book. As an experienced Buddhist who has joyfully practiced for many years, I find this one keeps coming off my bookshelf again and again. It's a fine example of wisdom and compassion, of tolerance and discipline, of shared joy and personal responsibility. It is an inspiration. It is good to encounter an author filled with Buddhism's optimism and realism.
--This book, and its outlook, is also an excellent antidote for times when one just feels kind of briefly overwhelmed by the negative craziness in the world (in other words, dukkha). Having just read a pathologically heartless, best-selling work by a fundamentalist atheist, I realized what a miracle it is that we have the opportunity to travel on a path with heart.

Book Description

Following in the footsteps of Dr. Wayne Dyer’s first children’s book, the bestseller Incredible You! this work goes even further toward expressing Wayne’s positive message for children. In Unstoppable Me! Dr. Dyer teaches children how to hold on to the no-limit thinking he believes they were born with, rather than just trying to “fit in.” In doing so, they can learn to truly enjoy life and become unstoppable as they strive to attain their dreams.
The 10 important lessons in this book include the value of taking risks, dealing with stress and anxiety, and learning to enjoy each moment. Each point includes an example showing how a child might apply the concept in his or her everyday life. Similar to Incredible You! there are questions at the end of the book to help spark discussion and to further reinforce Wayne’s message.

This is our second Wayne Dyer children's book, the first - Incredible You. Wayne has done it again, we love Unstoppable Me. The messages are simple and the illustrations by Stacy Heller Budnick are brilliant. My six year old son and I have read it a few times. We discuss two messages at bedtime and share daily examples. Being a big Wayne Dyer fan, I love sharing his message with my son. Plus, it's a great review for MOM, too. The questions section in the back of the book is fantastic too. Thanks, Wayne, Kristina, and Stacy. Keep 'em comin'. (We need to get them in the public libraries and school systems)

5 out of 5 stars Unstoppable Me.......2007-05-21

This is a great book to help children understand that they can deal with and handle their own issues. To most adults, this book would seem like common sense. Youngsters sometimes need to see things in print and read them more than once. This book talks to children through print and not from parent's constant reminding or nagging. It allows ideas to sink in slowly over time. I would highly recommend it.

Book Description

Journey to the Vastness of Your True Being

Once you've experienced the power of the present moment, what's next? Eckhart Tolle, who ignited a spiritual awakening in the West with his best-selling The Power of Now (New World Library, 1999), invites listeners to join him on a path that takes us even further into the profound experience of pure presence. Through the Open Door is Eckhart's highly anticipated return to audio, featuring new teachings on: • Achieving "Space Consciousness"—learning to focus on the underlying field from which all forms and thoughts arise • Refining your alertness to become alive and present with every cell of your body • The illusions that lead to suffering, spiritual longing, and the need for more time in our lives—and how to dispel them • How to discover "true liberation" beyond the limits of the thinking mind and the "little self," and more. Eckhart's listeners often report that they play his recordings time and again in order to experience his unique ability to transport them to a state of awakened consciousness. Now, the legions of fans who turn to this modern spiritual beacon for guidance are invited to follow him Through the Open Door—into "a new world of vast aliveness."

5 out of 5 stars Visiting the Now.......2007-10-01

I read The Power of Now The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment a number of years ago, but was recently drawn back to Tolle's work during a major change in my life. I was yearning for peace, and center, and stillness. In addition to re-reading the book, I discovered this CD. His voice and teachings, so clearly presented here, were soothing to my jangled, overwhelmed nervous system. I've never heard him speak in person, but I felt the power of his presence as he helped me re-tune into my own presence, and (of course) the Present. I will be keeping this CD handy for those all-too-frequent times when I need help being in the Now.

5 out of 5 stars The Door Is Always Open.......2007-08-07

I have read and listened to Eckhart Tolle for several years. For me, these two CD's were a welcome reminder and a further invitation to step into Being and Stillness, which requires no step at all. Listening to Eckhart's voice becomes a meditation in itself. His use of language is direct, simple, effective, and with a twist of unexpected humor!

5 out of 5 stars It will always be worth my Time.......2007-07-29

I can only speak for myself. Open door has and is a very positive tool to what I need in terms of my spirituality. I recommend it to those who are seriously, sincerely in the path. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars This is a live workshop.......2007-07-10

I did not see this anywhere in the description, so was unhappy to discover when playing the first time, this is a live workshop recording. I tried to be okay with that, give it a chance, but it lost me nearly immediately. In listening, I nearly jumped out of my chair when a lot of unexpected laughter leapt out at me. Not very peaceful, the effect I was seeking.

Ekhart's voice is slower than on other recordings. Being live, one gets to hear the audience laughing, coughing and making the usual audience noises. Combined with his slower-than-usual voice, it was impossible to enjoy. Had I known it was a live recording, I never would have purchased it.

5 out of 5 stars Tolle at his best.......2007-02-16

Well, yes...it may seem like the same old message and yet it seems we must hear it thousands of times before we GET it. That has certainly been the case for me, my "unconsciousness" being the hardest habit to break.
Tolle makes the truth utterly entertaining in his own open style.
One review here has mentioned not being able to conceive moving beyond what we call "thought". Tolle points out here (and in his book "The New Earth") that we are not thinking at all, but running habituated tapes in our minds. The place called "Being" is the true place of thought...ever new, fresh, creative, and NOW. If you are compulsively "thinking" about past or future, believe me you are not Being. Tolle points out the difference...as it seems we equate our compulsive neurotic thoughts with "intelligence". Not so, as I can say from being in both places (if only I could be in the Being place always!).
Is Being a place where you can function practically in the world? You bet your boots it is, and so much more. However, it is an unconceiveable place for your ego to entertain. The only place to recieve this GRACE is beyond ego, which is beyond thought. The interesting thing is...
going to the place of Being is something I remember from childhood...and other times when I have been so absorbed in the moment (doing something like art) I moved beyond the endless analytical mind. Truly a "mind vacation"! And it has an unmistakeable familiarity. I know this is THE REAL ME, covered up by ego crapola.
Anyone who enjoys AH Almaas and The Diamond approach will feel a familiar message here in "Essence" and the "Diamond Mind/Heart".
These 2 masters speak of the same place which is available to all, and indeed our natural birthright. One need not be "enlightened" to experience what Tolle is describing. Experiencing Being IS THE ENLIGHTENMENT. Check your ego at the door and find the vast possibilities within. It is within your reach if you want it bad enough! I'm afraid a burning desire is required...and nothing less.

1 out of 5 stars Unorganized, scattered ideas.........2007-08-28

I really hate to be the one to give this book a negative review, specially with all the positive reviews it has gotten so far, but honestly and truly this book did absolutely nothing for me. In fact, I did not get past the firt 2 chapters. I truly believe the Author holds wisdom in her words--I really do-- the only problem for me was that she(or the editor) did not take the time to focus her ideas one at a time and write them in a well-versed and organized format.

Almost every sentence is an advice on its own expressing a different idea to take in, and the reader is being told this and that relentlessly, but is it really getting through? You'll be left wondering if that sentence you just read was the same one you read in the previous paragraph. Didnt she just say that? These are some of the questions I kept asking myself. Alas, as hard as I tried, I could not finish the book.

5 out of 5 stars Make positive and extremely beneficial changes in your life.......2007-08-09

Can't figure out why certain things are happening to or not working for you? You could possibly find the answer in here. "If any area of your life is not working, one of your beliefs in that area needs to be changed" -from the book.

Many universal laws and principles are covered in this book. ie: Energy and how to sense and work with it, love, forgiveness, pain, how your imagination is a very important tool, (and the way it works with your subconcious is pretty amazing.) Each chapter ends with a 'Playsheet' which is very helpful, and gives you excercises to think about and try for yourself.

Besides the abundance of information, another nice thing about this is, while it's great to start at the beginning and read through, you can open this up randomly and read something beneficial.

This is an 'Orin' book, which means evidently the book is channeled from this entity through Sanaya Roman. I've only read a few books that claimed to be 'channeled', and I don't have a problem with it especially when the information is geared towards helping people to make positive life changes. There are lots of ways to grow and learn from reading this book and applying the new knowledge.

4 out of 5 stars As always a good book.......2007-08-07

I really love sanaya's books, they leave you with a warm feeling and an inner knowing. This book was very good but i wish there were more excersizes like her other books ie spiritual growth.

5 out of 5 stars Mark D. Hyde, Author of "Coloring Outside the Lines: One Gay Man's Journey to Self-Acceptance & Spiritual Awakening.......2007-06-16

I initially read Personal Power through Awareness about a year and a half ago. I was COMPLETELY amazed. It felt as if this book had been written specifically for me. The adage, when the student is ready, the teacher will appear is absolutely true. Sanaya Roman's book encapsulated my entire stuggle for the first 35+ years of my life. I so desperately wanted to be the good son, the perfect minister, ideal Christian, husband, friend, employee, etc. I wanted to please everyone, but the one who matters most.....me. This book was momunental in helping me reclaim myself and getting in touch with my energy. I even quote the following reference in my own book. "Being alone, sitting quietly, allowing yourself to rest physically, emotionally, and mentally will give you an increasingly clear sense of self. In those still times you are not playing out any role or any identity, and your soul can speak to you more clearly. You have the clearest sense of your own energy when you are not around others, when you are alone." I just finished reading this book again and even after five times through it, I still walk away with something new, timely, pertinent, and extremely helpful. I have no doubt whatsoever that you will do the same.

5 out of 5 stars My life is forever improved........2007-02-13

This book, as with all books by Sanaya Roman with Orin as her channel, has perminently improved my life. I understand so many wonderful things about the universe that I did not understand previously. I am experiencing joy and love at a whole new level. This book really prepared me for reading "Opening to Channel" by Sanaya. "Opening to Channel" is the greatest gift I have received from any book I have ever read. Although "Soul Love" also by Sanaya, may have benifited me as much and I may not realize it. When a person is ready for this information, it will improve their lives forever! I am gratful that I found these books.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC.......2007-06-04

As with all the other Chicken Soup For The Soul books I've read, this one was thoroughly enjoyed by my daughter. Children should read more, more and many more real life stories like this. It shows them that there are so many things that they have to be gratefull for.

3 out of 5 stars Chicken soup for the preteen 2.......2007-03-30

The chicken soup for the preteen soul

Chicken soup for the preteen soul is great book for teenage girls and boys to read if they

Like short story's about teens and there life. This book has a lot of stories to tell you, if

It's about love; friendship, care, or family then this would be the book for you. There are

A couple of story's I like in this book but one of my favorites is called My problem. Its

About an eleven year old boy who has trouble eating to much and becomes over weight

And the kids at his school make fun of him for example they call him fat so or four by

Four until one day he got into a program called tops witch changed his whole life. There

Are a lot more different stories by different authors and most of them are your age. So if

You read this book I promise you, you will love this book just give it a try. When I read

This book I felt like if some of the story's where telling part of my life and if I was the

One going through every thing that was happening. At first I thought this book would be

Boring because of the way it looked I thought It would maybe about recipes about how to

Make soup but when I read it, it turned out to be a great book with a lot of story's you

Maybe can relate to. While you are reading and stories are getting better the book finishes

But its okay I understand you would want to read more but all you have to read is the

next Part of the book called chicken soup for the teenage soul just because its says

Teenage soul doesn't mean it will be just for teenagers because you can read it to.

4 out of 5 stars Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul 2.......2007-02-20

Chicken Soup for the Preteen Soul 2 is a superlative book for preteens(mainly girls) who need advice for problems they might have. This awesome book is full of great, true stories for preteens- by preteens about family problems, friends, crushes, deaths, dreams, and even more unbelievable stories. Being a preteen is a tough time to go through- your body is going through changes and your emotions are higher than ever. Sometimes you just need someone to talk to or something to read. Hopefully this book will inspire you, help you achieve a lot of your dreams, make you laugh out loud, and show you that you're not alone- a lot of people have gone through the same situations. If you don't like to read long, extending books then i would not recommend this book for you or anyone else that doesn't like to read a lot. This book will prove that you can defeat those tough times and decisions. You have the power to make a better, more positive life for yourself and the world around you- start now by reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!!!.......2007-01-07

Full of heart warming stories.I could not put it down! Some I favored stories more than others. I strongly recommend this book 4 anyone!!!

5 out of 5 stars Sad and good at the same time!.......2006-11-28

This was a good book because most of the stories were from kids my age (11). Some stories were really funny! Espically the crushes! But there were a few really sad ones where I almost cried out loud. In school even! One was when a girl's mother dies and she actually sees her getting hit by a car! i thought about how i would feel if my mom died and i saw her getting hit. That one almost made me cry! Really, it did!
And another one was when a girl's best best friend dies! Of cancer! That one was really sad! I almost cried when i read that one too because of all the stuff that had happened to this girl before she met her friend. IT was sad because i thought of my friends and how sad I would be if my best friend, Hannah, died. It was said!

Trust me, you'll laugh and you'll cry, but this book was really REALLY GREAT!

Read this book from cover to cover and use it for life. Excellent in
every way to find your love, live in the right house and understand
when things can go wrong. I even subscribe to her newsletter and she
recently answered an e-mail of mine. Saved me from making a big
mistake moving, which I now know would have been foolish.

Glynis McCants clearly explains numerology and how YOU personally can learn more aboutyourself, your loved ones, your co-workers and that someone you just don't understand. She also provides insight as to where you are in a particular cycle of your life. It's very simple and incredibly insightful. I've purchased both of her books and an online reading and would highly recommend this book to someone who's curious or serious. I've researched numerology books and writings by others, but have yet to come across someone as succint and interesting as Glynis. You won't regret your purchase.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Changed My Life!.......2007-05-15

I have always been a skeptic about things like Numerology and "self help books", but after a friend gave this to me as a gift, I was ASTOUNDED! Glynis makes the science of Numerology accessible to the masses and she is dead on accurate. When I read about my Life Path, 7, it was like she knew who I was to the point where it was almost creepy. After doing the numbers of all the people in my life, I now am able to get along with everyone because I am able to relate to them in a way that they understand where I'm coming from. Now I am able to understand myself and others in a way I never could before. Thank you, Numberslady, for making my life easier. I recommend this book to you if you need something positive to read that will uplift you and show you how to get along with everyone. She not only shows you who you are but she shows you how to be happy, which is something that I have struggled with my whole life. THANK YOU GLYNIS!

2 out of 5 stars Too incredible to be true............2007-07-27

From reading the reviews here, I thought WOW! Maybe I'll find comfort here. I lost a daughter to suicide in March 2007, so I've been desperate for answers and I do believe in life after death....but this book is just too much of a good thing. Within 3 months of losing her son, the author claims to have had 50 or more 'communications and signs' from her son. Not only her and her husband, but most of his ex girlfriends, and even strangers keep getting signs from her son. She is constantly getting phone calls from people, son's friends and ex girlfriends, etc. saying they recieved a 'sign' from her son. And I've only read 65 pages of the book! Way, way over the top.....too many 'signs from beyond' to be true.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, Informative, Intriguing, Inspirational.......2007-03-29

Unfortunately, the blind faith offered to us by orthodox religion doesn't offer much comfort to those who have lost a loved one. Orthodoxy has our loved ones floating around in a humdrum heaven or gnashing their teeth in some horrific hell. Real faith - conviction - comes from direct contact with those alive in the spirit world, as was the experience of Judy Collier, the author.

Collier's son Kyle was killed, at age 26, in an auto accident in 1996. Collier found the grief unbearable until she started receiving veridical messages from Kyle through mediums Mary Jo McCabe and John Edward. "It was my first confirmation that there might be more to life than the physical world," Collier writes of an early contact through McCabe.

The skeptics claim that the messages coming through clairvoyants are trivial and mundane, but as Collier was to realize it is this type of message that is most evidential. Some of the information communicated was unknown to Collier and therefore telepathy or mindreading was ruled out.

"Knowing your loved one lives on, as I have been given proof of over and over again, makes Kyle's not being here with us more tolerable," Collier further states. She also came to learn that excessive grieving can hold a soul back from learning and advancing in the hereafter; hence, the title of this of this interesting, informative, intriguing, and inspirational book.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Story.......2006-03-16

I purchased this book when it first came out after talking to her husband at his place of business. I got chill talking to him and purchased the book. If you are uncomfortable with this type of book just remember that they were originally referred to a local intuitive (and author), Mary Jo McCabe, by a nun.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing Journey.......2002-09-16

From the title to the last pages, this book was comforting and a must read for anyone dealing with the loss of a child. It is well-written, funny, and pulls at your heart strings. Thanks Judy and Kyle for sharing your story!

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" For Anyone Who Has Lost a Child.......2002-05-19

I would like to recommend this book, "Quit Kissing My Ashes" by Judy Collier. It is a "Must Read" for anyone who has lost a child. I lost my child in August of 2001. Reading this book convinced me that I was not going "crazy" receiving my "angel" signs from my little Christie. This book only proves that our loved ones are with us all the time, and our signs, no matter what we feel or believe, let us know that our children stay with us, even when they have "crossed over" to the other side. Judy Collier relates to her readers all her signs she and her family have received from her son, Kyle. Judy lets everyone know that there is life after death, and if a person truly believes and lets themselves feel, that these signs will just keep being received by those who have the faith that God's love is truly present at this sorrowful time. I, for one, know this is abosolutely true, even though I admit that my little angel tries to tell her mom to "Get a grip" as maybe I take "signs" a little too far. But, you know, if it makes me feel better, what the heck!!! When a loved one dies, especially your child, a person has to dig really deep and learn so much more. Thank you Judy for writing this much needed book, to let us all know we are not crazy!!! Most importantly, thanks for letting us all realize our children are okay. I believe all parents only want their children's happiness and peacefulness with no worries or pain. Now, I realize my angel and many others have this. So, I tell others, when you see us cry, it is not for Chrisite, but for us who, of course, miss her so deeply. But is she okay?? You bet, and I can't wait till our entire family will one day be together again. Read this amazing book and feel your own signs at your time of grief. With faith in God, and listening to your innermost feelings, you too will realize what Judy herself tries to convince others what she has truly felt and come to believe on her amazing journey--our kids live on and they are okay.

    Book Description

Shows how dance, the highest expression of spirituality in cultures and traditions all over the world, is being integrated into the lives of women today

    • The first book to explore women's spiritual expression--women's ways--through a study of dance

    • Investigates how dance came to be excluded from worship, and reveals how dance is once again being brought into spiritual practices

    • Includes resources for further instruction in sacred dance

Today we primarily think of dance as a form of entertainment or as a way to exercise or socialize. There was a time, however, when dance was considered the way to commune with the divine, a part of life's journey, celebrating the seasons and rhythms of the year and the rhythms of our lives. Dance is a language that reunites the body, mind, and soul. While the role of women's sacred dance was most valued in goddess-worshipping cultures where women served as priestesses and healers, dance was once an integral part of religious ritual and ceremonial expression in cultures all over the world, including Judaism and Christianity. In this book the author investigates how dance came to be excluded from worship and reveals how dance is once again being integrated into spiritual practices.

Sacred Woman, Sacred Dance is the first book to explore women's spiritual expression--women's ways--through a study of dance. It describes sacred circles, birth rituals, ecstatic dances, and dances of loss and grief (in groups and individually) that allow women to integrate the movements of faith, healing, and power into their daily life.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Quite superficial.......2007-06-26

I do not want to talk about how the author handled all other "sacred dances", but, since I am well-familiar with the Indian classical dance, I do have a clear impression that the author, although apparently quite intellectual, has a very superficial (typical of a western rationalistic mind) idea of what the real classical Indian dance practices are about, and has no idea at all of what is Natya Yoga.

5 out of 5 stars more to Dance than meets the eye ..........2006-05-26

This book offers deeply insightful information regarding the history and symbolism of dance (mostly folkloric and Oriental, not ballet) as it relates to femininity and by extension, feminism in the spiritual, nonpolitical sense of a free self-expression.

The entire book is exceptional and engrossing, but I particularly enjoyed the chapter about the history of percussion/drumming, not only musical history but spiritual, religious, and psychological history as well. The chapter about trance dancing is very informative also, even alluring in its descriptions.

The book's many pictures are stunning (as is the author herself), and certainly every picture enhances already intriguing text.

My favorite picture is a photograph of Russian dancer Vera Morova (who gave up ballet to pursue Oriental dance) in a pose from her Snake Dance - the most exotic costuming and form imaginable!

A generous resource guide, notes section, and bibliography conclude the book.

5 out of 5 stars Woman Dance a renewal of sacredness.......2005-08-29

This book is very informative and wonderfully and intelligently written. I recommend it to any one that is interested in connecting with the ancient art of sacred movement. The illustrations are beautiful. It is wonderful to read books that are embracing the sacredness of the woman! Its time for women to unite and bring peace back into this world..This book is a great place to begin in understanding the importance of this!

    5 out of 5 stars Woman Dance!.......2004-01-07

This is a wonderful book for any woman who is searching to uncover her own hidden "feminine" gifts thorough dance, or for one who is searching out all woman history to re-build her own. Dance has been changed through out the centuries but the core is still present.
A book that will expand the beginners understanding of how dance is connected to the spiritual. Much substance.

    4 out of 5 stars Spiritual Dance.......2003-03-12

This book has an unusual approach to the history of dance. It has lovely photos/illustrations, and thorough notations throughout. I recommend ot for its unique approach to dance, but not for its (sometimes suspect) history. It's an interesting book, with a lot of information.

I can see using this book as a form of meditation I suppose that's as spiritual as you want it to be. There are interesting ideas here, and women who are exploring the meaning and origin of dance will probably find it a good read. As women's studies (which is one of the subjects this book falls into), it's a little lacking. She doesn't really provide enough hard evidence with some of her theories and interpretations to consider this a scholarly work. Women who are interested in the goddess will also find value in this book.

I recommend it as an interesting read, as long as the reader understands that much of what she writes is an interpretation of history, and cobbled together from whatever sources were available. Since much of women's history was never written, interpretation is necessary, of course, but I don't know how much is interpretation and how much is embellishment.

    Book Description

Demonstrating the unfolding of history, panoramic views visiting a particular site every few centuries follow the evolution of a Stone Age riverside settlement into a twentieth-century city. A bold title and date with a few sentences describing significant changes appears in the upper-right-hand corner of each broad vertical scene. Added statements wind around the four borders, offering details about daily life of the period and inviting readers to search for significant activities among the many small vignettes in the larger view. Tiny figures busy at daily life offer an engaging chronicle of human experience over time as invaders and disease take their toll or more peaceful times bring prosperity and growth. The hypothetical street is in an unnamed European setting; Romans, Barbarians, Vikings, and the plague alter the fortunes of in-habitants. Some of the historical milestones represented by the fourteen segments are not so far apart, while long stretches of time separate others. It's a very telescopic view, compressing the rich complexities of history into a few glimpses, but there's plenty of human interest in the passing scene to keep readers poring over the shifting yet similar pursuits of people over time. The timeline construct is a useful demonstration for children, and the busy vistas would make a fine springboard for encouraging students to create scenes of local history.

    3 out of 5 stars A Street Through Time.......2007-05-03

This story is about a 12,000 year walk through history. The story tells about what happened in 10,000 BC through the 1900's. In 10,000 BC people lived by hunting, fishing and gathering. This was important because they would have food to eat and they would use the animals' fur and hide for clothes and tents. These people were called nomads.

8,000 years later in 2,000 BC, the first farmers learned how to grow crops. Growing crops was a new skill that was developed. Other skills they learned were pottery, cloth weaving and metal working. The people of 2000 BC believed that a goddess made their crops grow and they also believed in gods.

1,400 years later in 600 BC people learned how to smelt iron. With the iron they could make better weapons and tools. The people could use the weapons to hunt and kill. They also could use the tools to construct huts to live in. Also a good plow was invented to help farm.

In 100 AD the Roman Empire brought a new way of life. The new way of life was that their village became a town. The town had hundreds of people and a bridge had been built so that the people wouldn't have to ride on a boat to get across the river. A family that is rich lived in a domus and they made slaves do all of the hard work.

In 600 AD invaders came to Europe and destroyed the new way of life. The life they lived was horrible. The invaders destroyed the people's homes, the fort, and piped water. They also destroyed the baths and toilets. The villagers ate wild boar, sheep and pigs. The fish traps provided the villagers with fresh fish.

In 900 AD Barbarians settled in the village and became Christians. Different invaders were attacking the village. These invaders were called Viking Raiders. The Viking Raiders came to the village to find treasure and slaves. The people were scared and they tried to hide their treasure. Some people were killed and some people were taken away.

In 1200 AD the ruler of the medieval village was called a lord. He built a castle to protect the people. The lord's son and his son's wife ran the village for the lord. The lord and his family lived a better life then the villagers. The village people lived in small houses.

In the 1400's a trade for boats made a village grow into a town. Some people in the town had become very rich. People who were rich could afford high priced glass and toilets. The poor people from the town had to drink water from the dirty river. People in the town threw their trash in the street.

In the 1500's a disease called Black Death came to Europe. Black Death was a disease that was carried by fleas and black rats. The disease killed most of the people in the town. People who died were taken in a death cart and were buried in a plague pit. The people tried to help themselves by burning sulfur in the street to get rid of the deadly infection.

In the 1600's war broke out. The town was under attack by enemy soldiers. The enemy soldiers were fighting the town's people over religion and who should rule the country. The church, stone castle and Miller's house that had most of the lord's flour were burned down. Also many people died.

In the 1700's peace had returned to the town and war had ended. Some houses were repaired after the war. The lord lived in a mansion. The poor people were cramped and lived together. Coffee was imported and became a drink. People sold fruit, flour and other goods. A mail coach was a type of transportation that carried passengers and mail from town to town.

In the early 1800's coal was discovered. Air was bad from the smoke of the coal and conditions were also bad for the people. Factory wages were low and the town's people had to work long hours. Children also worked to earn money.

In late 1800's the town had grown into a city. Conditions had improved. A new train carried people from towns to cities. A town hall was built to celebrate the wealth of the city. Steam engines were used to power boats and locomotives.

In the 1900's to the new millennium an airplane is a new type of transportation. People have more time to have fun and they have more time to rest and play. Businesses replaced heavy industries because they didn't want waste in their surroundings. People now live in houses or apartments. The government protects ancient monuments and the people. The Street Through Time is a great, unique, and fantastic book to read and to learn about the past.

    5 out of 5 stars endlessly fascinating.......2006-12-17

all the kids AND adults in our house are endlessly fascinated by this book. we always find something on every page that we hadn't noticed before. aside from the hundreds of historical details is the gorgeous artwork, placing the street/town in various times of day and seasons of the year. you can almost smell the fall air, the snow in winter. i've seen most of the "a ____ through time" books, and this is the best, in my opinion. the scale is not too big, and not too small. this a book that will be pored over for many years.

5 out of 5 stars A great book you'll enjoy almost as much as your kids.......2006-11-16

My children greatly enjoy all the books in this series, and while Anne Millard does a great job with the facts it is the art of Steve Noon that really makes these books phenomenal. Easily understood information that is very interesting appears on each page, and with characters you can follow throughout the book you can spend a long time searching for them -- which allows you to really appreciate all the other historically accurate mini-scenes that play out all over. I will admit that I have been known to look through these books even when my children aren't around. This book, and all the others in this series, should be enjoyable for all children of all ages. Even those who aren't old enough to read will still love the pictures and learn something. Older children learn quite a bit, and keep coming back to the book because there is always something new to find. I highly recommend this book, and encourage any parent to add all of them to their collection!

    5 out of 5 stars A timeless reference.......2006-07-31

This book presents a dozen historically significant dates and vignettes from the stone age to the present day. The realistic illustrations of the street, its buildings and inhabitants show a snapshot of each age plus lingering elements from earlier times. A scene from circa 1500 AD, for example, shows intimate details and panoramic views: a white cross marking the door of a quarantined house, the visible panic of a plague victim upon seeing the black pustules under his arm, a medieval windmill built on a prehistoric barrow, a castle built on the ruins of a Roman fort, etc. The drama and detail help history come alive for readers.

Adults may not learn anything new from A Street Through Time but children glean a great deal of information from the labeled illustrations and interesting facts listed in the margins. My kids inspect this book repeatedly, paying special attention to the activities of their young counterparts down through the ages.

5 out of 5 stars History Lesson at a Glance .......2006-03-24

Any one can learn about how people lived during an era easily by viewing all that takes place on a typical day. Each page captures the lives of those who live in that era for all to see at a glance. Added fun is trying to find the time traveler on each page! And, yes, he is on each page - hiding in haystacks during raids, on a boat during the plaque to bartering for fruits on yet another page (era). Teacher loved it,and kids have enjoyed veiwing an learning without realizing it.
