Great WW Recipes.......2006-04-09
If you're a fan of WW, you should love this book. It was written before any of the POINTS systems, so you have to do some calculations on your own. The nutrition info is provided for each recipe. This book is an especially good value because as another reviewer noted, for each main recipe, you get additional recipes provide a day's worth of meals.
I give this book four stars because I've always had to doctor my WW recipes. They tend to be on the bland side for me, but they are always good starting points. I also enjoy light cookbooks that provide tips for cutting fat and calories and this book does not. It's just recipes.
Not the book for my family.......2005-03-06
Way too many of the recipes in this book have ingredients I have never heard of! Also, the ingredient lists are often very long. I am donating my copy to the public library and will use "The Moms' Guide to Meal Makeovers" and "Quick Meals for Healthy Kids and Busy Parents" to help me provide sensible meals for my family.
Great book but..........2003-12-18
I just recieved this the other day and have yet to make any recipes from this cookbook. But I have now tried several of the WW cookbooks and they always have great recipes, so there is no doubt that I will find some more healthy ones in this book.
I love how each page has a main recipe on it and then they have built a whole day of eating around that one recipe. Sometimes, there are smaller typed recipes in the daily menu area on each page. For example, on one page, the main recipe is for Grilled Chicken Caesar salad. Then to the right of the recipe, they have built a whole day of meals around this recipe. They have suggested what to eat for breakfast (banana and cereal), a light meal (beans and franks, carrot/celery sticks, whole wheat roll, yogurt), the main meal (which includes the Chicken caesar salad, creamy brocolli soup--provides the recipe, a peach and Italian bread) and an evening snack (3 cups of plain popcorn).
This is perfect for someone who needs to follow a strict menu to stay on track. Not everyone has the self discipline to make their own healthy menus and stay within the WW guidelines, so this would work well for those people. And each recipe/daily menu is different so you don't have to worry about being bored and eating the same things over and over.
The only real complaints I have about this book is that it is outdated compared to the newer WW cookbooks. It doesn't have any of the point values in the book, so you need to use the WW calculator to figure the point values out for each recipe. And the other complaint that I have is the book does have a few pictures in it, but most of the pictures are very unappetizing. They look like they just threw the recipe together and didn't worry about presentation. The more recent WW cookbooks make the pictures look very yummy, unlike this one.
Also, we all know that not everyone can eat the same amount of calories and continue to lose weight, so its unclear as to who this cookbook is geared towards. Someone who needs to be eating 1600 calories and actively losing weight still or someone who is maintaining their goal weight and need to eat around 1200 calories per day.
This cookbook looks like its worth a try, even just for the recipes and not the daily menus. But it't not as nice as the newer cookbooks that WW has put out in the last few years.
Doesn't Taste Like Diet Food!!!.......2002-03-11
This cookbook is the best I've ever tried! I had a pretty good selection of cookbooks before buying this one so I didn't really think a 'healthy cookbook' would be able to compare... but the recipes are really great! There's a large selection of tastes for simple to complex meals.
Plus for each day/page the book does not just give you one recipe. You'll be given a full menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Side dish ideas and drink ideas that will go good with your main dish are suggested! It's deffinatly a unique and helpful cookbook. You'll love it!

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Sure, it's neat to know which famous people have the same birthday you do, but wouldn't it be fascinating to know what else you have in common with these celebrities? The Secret Language of Birthdays will show you this and much more. Through "personology" (a combination of characteristics influenced by sun sign, season, and day of the year) and an analysis of several thousand character profiles, authors Gary Goldschneider and Joost Elfers have pinned down the traits most common to people born on the same day.
Rather than taking a strictly astrological approach--how the planets, sun, and stars affect a person's behavior--the authors compare the commonalties of people who share birthdays, and piece together a personality for each day of the year, effectively slicing through geographical and cultural differences, while avoiding the one-size-fits-all trap of newspaper sun-sign horoscopes. Some readers may find the authors' strict use of the Gregorian calendar limiting, but conversion to other time-keeping systems is fairly simple (the authors make note of this problem and contend that a day is a day, whether someone names it October 21 or 1 Rajab). Goldschneider and Elfers focus on a model of the year as a wheel spinning in a recurring circle of patterns, an idea that reaches back far beyond the linear calendars we use today. Each birthday discussed includes important numbers, tarot cards, and a dose of psychology, so while you learn a little about the other people with your birthday, you may even discover something new about yourself. --Brian Patterson

An Eye Opening Experience.......2006-07-15
This book is a must-have! It's a great conversation piece for get togethers. When I read my birthday I was amazed at how the analogy applied to me. I bring it to work once or twice a year for people to read about themselves, their children, spouses, etc. Most are awed at the accurate depiction illustrated of themselves or loved ones born on a certain day. The only people that have picked up my book and denied the accuracy of what the book depicted were people whose personalities were negative. When I read their birthday personality I felt the book was right on about them. It described their negative and maybe vindictive personality which I saw in these people. The negative/pessimistic personalities that read about themselves denied any truth to what they read because they don't want to accept who they are. I have read numerous birthday personalities for my spouse, my children, relatives, friends and acquaintances and found this book to be very accurate. I feel it's a must-have. You should know what YOU are capable of and know more about the people in your life. This book is very accurate in my opinion!
Fun to read but you will quickly tire.......2006-01-23
Each birthday gets two pages of trivia such as who was born on this day, a personality evaluation, numbers & planets, tarot, health, advice, meditation, and more. Just imagine being born on 20 April. Adolf Hitler. The book is too old to remember the Columbine shootings.
There are a few other sections in the book that cover periods in the zodiac cycle.
Nice superficial book that may give you some conversation for a day or two. This also makes a good coffee-table book. Soon though even your visitors will get bored with the book.
If you like this book you will love "You Were Born on a Rotten Day" by Jim Critchfield.
Nice to read a book .......2005-07-09
that doesn't go into great detail about how flawed we have been since birth and if we don't do certain things on certain days in certain places, we're all going to burn in this terrible place forever.
For those who "believed" in this book to the point where they lost their jobs, houses, and everything else, that's their problem that they want to believe everything they read (I've also known people of questionable character and motives who believe everything the bible says word for word and then have the nerve to go around judging people who don't meet their standards - losing their jobs, houses, etc. in the process - and I don't see anyone complaining about that).
It's a fun book to have around and I love hearing the half-cocked explanations as to how a complete stranger can pick up the stronger points of your personality just by looking at your birthdate.
No one astrology book contains the whole truth. This book is meant to attempt to explain what you *may* be like, personality-wise.
Lighten up.
Wicked Book.......2004-12-12
This book is not to be taken seriously. However, because it is often accurate, you cannot not take it seriously. And when you do, you will lose yourself. You will believe whatever the book says about you. The more you dwell into it, the more you become out of touch with reality. Some people who got hooked on this book actually lost their jobs, their houses, and their personal life. This book will cause turmoil once you believe in it. Absolutely destructive.
It's a book, and contains what you'd expect. Amusing!.......2004-12-06
Highly entertaining book! If you want to have fun, and don't take this sort of thing too seriously, I highly recommend it. If you DO take this sort of thing as total fact/truth, more power to you. "Today you will have a deep feeling" "Today you will make a choice that will change your life" Horoscopes and astrology are as ambiguous as they are for a reason. ***FOR ENTERTAINMENT ONLY***

Indispensible.......2007-06-09
A new word from this calendar greets me every single morning, and jump-starts my brain while I'm washing my face. Words often pop up that remind me of someone, and I sent that page to her or him; I sometimes recognize words I've encountered in various books and, happening to remember where one of those words appeared, I place that page in the book at the point where the word appeared... it's GREAT fun. This word-a-day calendar is the greatest innovation in calendar use since the designation of Leap Years.
Excellent Condition.......2007-03-25
The calendar I ordered from this seller arrived timely and in perfect condition.
Learning Something Every Day.......2007-03-17
The Word A Day Calendar is my favorite way to watch the days go by. The words are interesting, and the sentences using the words are always apt and enlightening. The explanations and stories about derivation on the back of each page present a treasure trove of information which leads your thoughts to further inquiries.
Word Pleaser.......2007-02-14
This book does indeed help in learning new words. It provides a lackadaisical, languid or nonchalant (albeit interesting) way to garner new tidbits for expressing a plethora of minutiae which abound in the thoughts of the boorish and churlish within the hoi polloi (the gallery) on this mortal coil. Although a classic "pearls before swine" it is a good yearly purchase for adding expressions to the vocabularies of those unfortunates who do not have the initiative to have already expanded their diminutive tautology and meaningless drivel as they saunter along the "Bell Curve." Enough said with my dubiously enlightened verbiage.
Nice Calendar.......2007-01-28
Interesting calendar which helps you learn a word every day of the year. However, most of the words may not be really suitable for normal conversations.

A must-have book for teachers new to the middle grades.......2006-01-31
I've been the editor and webmaster of a website dedicated to middle grades education for about 10 years. As part of that work, we've developed a strong online community of 600+ professional educators from across the globe who hold daily discussions about teaching adolescents. These "teachers on the frontlines" generally consider Rick Wormeli's "Day One & Beyond" to be a "must have" book for any teacher new to the middle grades. And they're quick to admit that he's got plenty of ideas that will benefit veterans as well! For middle school novices, I'd rank it at or above the level of the classic "First Days of School." Get both!
Excellent.......2003-08-01
This book offers excellent insight into the world of teaching in a middle school. There are wonderful, and practical, strategies for how to approach everything from assigning homework to seating charts to discipline problems. This book is a must have for any new middle school teacher!

Tapping into Celtic, Roman, Egyptian, and other cultural traditions, Nigel Pennick explores the individual significance of almost every day of the year. Pennick reveals some of the mechanics, such as moon phases and equinoxes, underlying many important holidays, and he breaks the year into seasons, months, and even hours, offering a peek into the importance of even the smaller divisions of the year. --Brian Patterson
Book Description
⢠A daybook containing information about rituals and celebrations that have for centuries been associated with the changing seasons of the year.
⢠Includes charts of equinoxes and solstices, moveable holy days, and monthly lunar phases updated through the year 2010
⢠First edition sold more than 30,000 copies
Pagan rites and festivals are at the root of many traditional holidays in the Western world. Embracing a sensitivity we have lost, the Pagan traditions emphasize mystical spirituality, reverence for the feminine principle, and the links between people and the earth. This unique daybook contains a treasury of information about rituals and celebrations that have for centuries been associated with the changing seasons of the year. Included are the observances of the ancient Greek, Roman, Celtic, Anglo-Saxon, and Norse traditions, as well as Wiccan traditions and the worship of the Goddess.
In The Pagan Book of Days the author provides details on auspicious and inauspicious days, holy days of ancient gods and goddesses, and the eight stations of the year (the solstices, equinoxes, and cross-quarter days). He also includes lunar and solar charts indicating dates of major Pagan celebrations from the year 2000 through the first decade of the millennium. Illustrations throughout depict images from the classical and northern European traditions. The Pagan Book of Days is an enlightening way to incorporate these ancient cultural and spiritual practices and awarenesses into your daily life.

Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
This is not as new-agey as it sounds, really. It is more of a straight up calendar type book. It goes through and does mention a whole lot of festivals and rituals and associations for the various days of the yearl.
You will get a lot of surprises about what was worshipped when, or was worthy of a festival or celebration.
A must have for all practitioners........2007-01-01
The comprehensive listing of Pagan events for the year is a must have for all practitioner libraries. All paths covered in effecient detail. I highly recommend it for everyone.
Wonderful Monthly Information .......2006-03-08
This book is chuck full of information for each month and encompasses many different Pagan cultures. A wonderful resource for the curious, newsletters, calendars, event planning and for teaching/lectures. I highly recommend this book for personal and group libraries.
A little disappointing.......2005-08-16
On the down side there are quite a few missing entries for days. On the upside there is some very interesting information on the tides of the day and other calendars. I would give this 3 1/2 stars.
A great mix for the beginner.......2004-07-04
Speaking as a beginner to wicca myself, i often get mixed up with moon days and calender days because often these things are in different books. happily, the pagan book of days solves a big chunk of that problem. it's all here -- everything a beginner and possibly a full time wiccian would need to keep track of the different festivals and sacred days that happen throughout the year. i could only wish the descriptions of each days were a little longer, but as some beginners (like me) have a short attention span and just want the facts, then thats pretty much for the best I'd say.
I'd also love to give a personal kudo's to the author, Nigel, for giving a short but sweet explanation on the moon phases, as well as the tides of day. all and all, a great resource for the novice who wants it all in one place and doesn't want to delve too deeply but wants a good overview of them all. (p.s: it's fluff free. enjoy)
Book Description
There are no short-cuts to becoming a Witch. Traditionally, students take a year and a day to prepare for their initiation into the Craft. Based on this age-old custom, Wicca: A Year and a Day is a one-of-a-kind daily guide that introduces Witchcraft over a 366-day cycle.
Ideal for solitary students, this intensive study course teaches the core content of Wiccan practice: the tides of time, the wonders of the seasons, the ways of herbs and magic, the mysticism of the Old Ones, and the inner disciplines of seers and sages. Daily lessons include exercises, Wiccan theology and lore, and discussions relating to circle work, magical correspondences, holidays, deities, tools, healing, and divination.

A book every new Wiccan should own!!.......2007-07-14
I can't say how much I love this book! I'm on day 230, and I'm working through this book on my own. This book teaches you so many things and covers so much important material. It sneaks up on you how much you learn. You get to KNOW the Goddess and God in all of their aspects, learn about the elements, learn so much about all of the Sabbats, meditiation, divination, and so much more. Yes, you will need to purchase some simple supplies to make incenses and oils and some of the workings in this book. Guess what? They are relativily inexpensive, and the finished products are totally worth it. I live in the middle of South Dakota, and we have ZERO new age stores in this state. Guess what? I've been able to order everything I need through ebay and at a great store in Colorado that has a website as well as a brick and motar store, plus they take paypal. If you can't afford the ingrediants to make a certain incense, he does suggest simple ones. I'm getting so much out of this book, and I'll be kepping it on my shelf for reference when I'm done with it.
A nice way to connect to the witch's faith.......2007-07-13
I bought the book with the hope of having a semi-formal exploration of witchcraft. I felt it likely that this would be a good path for me, but I didn't want to be one of those people who buy a spellbook and a pentacle and proclaim herself a witch without any grounding in what that really means. I felt that by doing a true year-and-a-day dedication before really beginning to do spells, etc, would give me a solid base- and thi sbook does provide that (I am about halfway through). I have found that I sometimes have to fudge the sequence of the days, for example, every three weeks or so, you will encounter a "day of silence", during which you are not supposed to speak. Which for me means a weekend day- there is no way I could get away with not speaking at work! Fortunately, my boyfriend and friends are all very supportive, so I've had no trouble outside fo work with it.
I also found that I was due to start Samhain at the time of Summer Solstice... which I founf irritating, so I divided the lessons surrounding holidays and redispersed them over the year so that they actually line up with their holiday seasons (I just noted the days on the calendar). Bear in mind each holiday has about 7 to 9 days associated with it, in the book. I arranged it so that the "culminating" spell fell on the holiday itself, but noticed also that he teaches you to make the oil and incense to use during the holiday spells on the day following the spells themselves, which required flipping days around, again.
Also found the inclusion of sigils without explanations regarding their meaning somewhat exasperating, since they don't appear to be standard across the board. It *has* encouraged me to explore other texts in search of meanings for the sigils, which I believe is making me a much more educated and effective witch-in-training, but I still haven't found all of them. I am a little leery of using them to consecrate holy objects if I don't even know what they mean.
I do not, however, complain about some things being tricky to find, or being difficult or inconvenient to do, such as watching the sun rise, or keep periodic days of silence- after a fashion, I believe that if it were all very very easy and convenient, it would lose some of its allure and effectiveness. You must work for it, and I appreciate that the book includes some more complicated tasks.
Overall, it's proving to be a very effective book, but you will have to work to get through it. All I can say is that if you're serious about learning, that isn't really a bad thing.
Great, but boring.......2007-06-21
I head a study group that uses this book. It's a great introduction, and set up so that you'll have a full closet by the end of the year.
However, it does have it's drawbacks. Some days are slow, or seemingly pointless. Other days you'll be asked to get up at 6 am or go out in the middle of the day, with no warning the day before. Other times you'll be asked to go through a whole formal ritual simply to "feel the wind" This is, in my opinion, a frivilous use of power and energy. Since the book is written so that you can start at any time. The lessons on the Wheel of the year are "smushed" together, and get tedius. It's hard to celebrate yule when your physical wheel is still in Mabon!
This will also be an expensive endevor. Luckily, I work at a pagan/herb shop that supplied the group with what it needed at a reasonable price, and the group members split more high priced items like oils. You will have a complete closet at the end of your year, but it will not come cheap. He also tends to ask the impossible (there is no such thing as "essential cucumber oil") and he doesn't reassure you that it is okay to make substitutions or skip certain things.
I would reccomend this book as a good reference book, but I wouldn't try to follow it exactly, or do everything it asks.
Great book, with caveats.......2007-05-27
This book is a great introduction, but some things should be kept in mind. First off, this isn't a series of lessons in Wicca in general, it is a set of lessons within a specific, very traditional, view of Wicca. That's fine, so long as you know where the author's coming from. As such, I'd strongly, strongly recommend supplemental reading with this book - Cunningham/McLeland during the introductory lessons, Farrar during the section on the deities, Nichols/Campanelli during the lessons on the Sabbats, Lipp during the elemental and circle-casting chapters, and so on. A 'read during this month' section every thirty days would have improved this lesson plan immensely.
Second, Mr. Roderick likes to include obscure things without explaining why. He includes sets of sigils to be carved on the magical tools without explaining why or what they represent. He gives chants in obscure languages without providing meanings (including the infamous Bagabi chant, which is most likely gibberish written by a 16th century playwright for the sake of sounding cool, nothing more.)
Third, Mr. Roderick has an overly strong fascination with certain specific essential oils - specifically rose and jasmine - which are some of the most expensive essential oils available on the market. Following his recipes would have cost hundreds of dollars when much cheaper alternative recipes are available. Do yourself a favor and buy a copy of Cunningham's 'Incense, Oils, and Brews' and 'Magical Aromatherapy' to go with this book, and use alternative recipes or formulate your own.
Anyway, I DO recommend this book to anyone looking for a well-planned, organized approach to learning Wicca, but I recommend using it as a framework, supplemented with your own study and carefully, intelligently altering the exercises as you may find necessary.
Very Disapointed.......2007-02-23
There were some pretty good reviews for this book so I decided to pick it up. I didn't get past the first few pages when I noticed shopping lists. Great, even more money to spend! So, I'm looking through this shopping list and I find that on them are things like "myrrh resin or dried, powdered orris root" and more and more herbs that I've NEVER heard of. First, I'm not into herbology so if you're going to make an instructional book then tell me what these things are. Now I have to do research on a book that I bought for research. Second, not everyone lives in a part of the country where religions outside of the Christian realm are in any way acceptable, so there isn't any type of new age or herbal shop near. This would be the time to provide alternatives to these ingredients and even though I searched the back where the resources are I didn't find a store carrying the first 30 days of herbs. Meaning I'd have to pay two sets of shipping charges and order from two different places just in the first 30 days. I can only imagine as the book progresses how much of a pain it will be to find these things. Maybe I'm so used to the laid back and helpful writings of Scott Cunningham that I'm expecting the same from this Wiccan author but none the less, I am left disapointed and out money.

Book Description
In this lively and engaging history, Stephen Puleo tells the story of the Boston Italians from their earliest years, when a largely illiterate and impoverished people in a strange land recreated the bonds of village and region in the cramped quarters of the North End: Sicilians lived next to Sicilians, Avellinesi among Avellinesi, and so on. Focusing on this first and crucial Italian enclave in Boston, Puleo describes the experience of Boston's Italian immigrants as they battled poverty, illiteracy, and prejudice (Italians were lynched more often than members of any other ethnic group except African Americans); explains their transformation into Italian Americans during the Depression and WWII; and chronicles their rich history in Boston up to the present day. He tells much of the story from the perspective of the Italian leaders who guided and fought for their people's progress, reacquainting readers with pivotal historical figures like James V. Donnaruma, founder of the key North End newspaper La Gazetta (now the English-language Post Gazette), and politician George A. Scigliano. The book's final section is devoted to interviews with today's influential Boston Italian Americans, including Thomas M. Menino, the city's first Italian American mayor. The story of the Boston Italians is among America's most important, vibrant, and colorful sagas, and necessary reading for anyone seeking to understand the heritage of this ethnic group.

The Boston Italians, From the Years of the Great Immigration to the Present Day.......2007-09-27
Having grown up in Boston's Italian North End in the 40's, 50's. and 60's, I found this book to be both informative as well as nostalgic. Many times it brought me back to memories of my youth by describing scenes that I remembered clearly myself. Most fun of all was all the talk about North Square, my family home from the age of 9 until my marriage at age 23. My grandparents owned the building next door to Sacred Heart Church's rectory and across the street from Paul Revere's House.Thank you to Stephen Puleo for a wonderful book! The Boston Italians: A Story of Pride, Perseverance, and Paesani, from the Years of the Great Immigration to the Present Day
A solid and entertaining ethnic history .......2007-09-27
This is a great read even if you're not of Italian ancestry! This book does a fantastic job of recounting the obstacles that many ethnic minorities had to overcome to build a better life for themselves and their families. The author does a great job of providing not only historic context but a personalization level that is often missing or when included seems out of context or innnapropriate.
I think the author's commitment to defending the Italian people against Hollywood and Madison Avenue sterotyping presents a unique perspective, often times not heard. He does not deny that the Mafia exists but is strongly, and rightfully, offended that the only portrayls of Italians in the media are of thugs or mobsters.
All in all a great read and hugely enjoyable.
An insde look at history for Italians........2007-06-08
I really enjoy the book...It appears to be everything they forget to teach you about the Italian History in school...It's a real eye opener on what our country expected from new citizens. Being Italian and German I had Italian Grandparents who arrive durning the turn of the century. Had no idea what they had gone though to become citizens...I consider the book a very well writen book...
Book Description
Collected here for the first time in one easy-to-dispose-of volume is an inside look at the outside of Mad. Launched in 1952 as a ten-cent comic book, Mad was transformed three years later into a twenty-five cent (cheap!) magazine. Over the years one thing remained constant: Every issue had a cover. And here they are, complete with running commentary by Mad's poet laureate, Frank Jacobs. Join idiot cover boy Alfred E. Neuman as he's depicted by the magazine's greatest cover artists, including Norman Mingo, Kelly Freas, Richard Williams, Mort Drucker, chimpanzee J. Fred Muggs, and Leonardo da Vinci. Including rare, never-before-seen art, photos, and sketches, Mad: Cover to Cover is a fifty-year roundup of Mad humor from its humble inception right up to the present as it celebrates its 400th issue as the world's foremost satire magazine. Hoohah!

Five Stars Plus.......2006-07-23
Among the most enjoyable books of my experience. Just the high quality reproduction of the covers would make this a great book. Add to that a fantastic presentation! Amazingly done.
A richly savory festival of imagination, creativity, insight(cultural, sociological, philosophical, etc.) and, of course, delightful humor and splendiferous transcendental artwork. Lots of charming tidbits including photos, extra art reproductions, etc.
Thanks Frank and The Usual Gang for this inundation of funshine and good cheer!
Best sight gags ever, although some background needed.......2005-03-26
If there are better sight gags than those on the cover of Mad magazine, then I have yet to see them. This book is a collection of the first 400 covers and some of them had me hysterical with laughter. My favorite was the one where Alfred is holding a hard taco shell behind a Mexican dog that is straining mightily. Others were just as funny, although some did require explanation. The producers of the magazine were not above applying a little duplicity when creating the covers.
The only drawback for younger readers will be that knowledge of the current events of the time is a precondition if you are to get the joke. For example, some covers feature political figures, and if you don't know anything about them, the joke is lost. Other covers are spoofs of hit movies of the time, so the explanatory captions are a welcome addition. Having lived through those times, I understood most of them, but there were a few times when I didn't understand the joke until I read the caption.
This book is very funny and you cannot help but be impressed by the quality of the artwork and the zany intelligence that went into the covers of Mad. The producers of Mad constantly lampooned themselves as idiots, but they were without question geniuses.
a must have book for mad readers.......2004-10-13
this book is well designd and gives all the information about the covers over the years, including notes about the spacial covers.
i highly recomand this book to any mad reader.
How the 'usual gang of idiots' spent forty-eight years........2002-11-24
The first copy of Mad I saw was issue 29 in September 1956 (still got it too) and I was hooked. How could a magazine be so funny and be so spot-on with its satire? Easy, just employ the `usual gang of idiots' that's how. I kind of grew out of it when I discovered the National Lampoon, how could a magazine be so funny etc, etc. But I have always had a soft spot for Mad and this book of covers is a super addition to my back issues and other Mad books.
All 399 (up to November 2000) covers are in this well designed and printed book Mostly one or two covers to a page sometimes with Frank Jacobs' commentary and with a lot of the latter covers you get to see the preliminary cover roughs. As the years go by you can see how the covers changed from simple visual gags into ones that are much more graphic and busy because they have to work harder on the newsstand. The ideas are still very funny after all these years though. My favorite is issue 35 (October 1957) a wraparound that celebrated the fifth anniversary with a great painting from Norman Mingo showing a few dozen very famous American merchandising characters seated round a dining table, Alfred's at one end grinning. I would love this as a poster.
I think it is worth mentioning for Mad fans the seven CD-ROM `Totally Mad' set, every page from the issue one thru to December 1998, the interface is very user friendly and the discs have a lot of additional aural and visual surprises.
BTW, Robert Silver's photmosaic book cover, made up from the magazines covers, is stunning.
