5 out of 5 stars Effective Tool for Positive Mood Change.......2007-08-21

I am still in the middle of reading this book...but so far I am delighted with its primary message: WE ALL HAVE CONTROL OVER OUR OWN MOODS! This book is filled with exercises, checklists and mood inventories...all designed to offer the reader an interactive role in their own healing.

I have struggled with depression my entire life and because of this book am understanding the concept of healing myself through positive thoughts. I would recommend this book to anyone who struggles with depression, regardless of the severity.

4 out of 5 stars Ten days to Self-Esteem.......2007-05-07

10 Days to Self Esteem is a staple in my practice working with clients coping with depression and anxiety. This is the one workbook where clients will consistently complete the exercises and homework. They have shared that the techniques are understandable and they can see their progress. The Cost benefit analysis is the one technique, however, clients /patients find dificult initially; but then catch on. My clients see improvement in themselves once they go through the entire workbook and that the most important. Thanks so much!
Debra Irby, LCSW-C

4 out of 5 stars Practical steps to Mindfulness.......2007-04-14

This is an excellent companion to Ellen J. Langer's "Mindfulness". It provides practical techniques for becoming mindful in small decisions that can add up to big problems or big benefits.

4 out of 5 stars A Helpful book.......2007-03-31

I liked this book. It helped me alot. It was easy to understand but you have to write in it ALOT! You should get "The Feeling Good Handbook" by Dr. David Burns as well. Dr. Burns has you to read different chapters of the book to go along with Ten Days. I had to stop reading Ten Days and get the Feeling Good Handbook before I could finish.

5 out of 5 stars A new beginning.......2007-03-08

This book is a very good resource for those who are battling depression. Whether you are a manic depressive, or just battling low self-esteem, this book breaks down everything for you and even has work book exercises to help you pin point the problem, then work on it. I highly recommend it.

Book Description

Jonah Caine, a lone survivor in a zombie-infested world, struggles to understand the apocalypse in which he lives. Unable to find a moral or sane reason for the horror that surrounds him, he is overwhelmed by violence and insignificance. After wandering for months, Jonah's lonely existence dramatically changes when he discovers a group of survivors. Living in a museum-turned-compound, they are led jointly by Jack, an ever-practical and efficient military man, and Milton, a mysterious, quizzical prophet who holds a strange power over the dead. Both leaders share Jonah's anguish over the brutality of their world, as well as his hope for its beauty. Together with others, they build a community that reestablishes an island of order and humanity surrounded by relentless ghouls. But this newfound peace is short-lived, as Jonah and his band of refugees clash with another group of survivors who remind them that the undead are not the only-nor the most grotesque-horrors they must face.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful, wonderful zombie novel!.......2007-10-16

I loved the character development and the ending. Very different from the norm and a genuine treat.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best zombie novels I've ever read.......2007-10-06

Title mostly sums this review up. I've read a lot of zombie novels and this by far one of the best I've ever read. It's ranked up there with World War Z in my opinion. I find it really explores human nature in times of crisis. You got your good and your evil, with some being truly kind and others doing some of the most despicable things ever. But lets not forget the zombies, they're ever present and the author truly paints some gore filled scenes with his shambling masses of undead.

5 out of 5 stars Good Zombie novel!!.......2007-09-18

I have read alot of zombie books and this one uses the more common ideas for them. BUT it has a neat twist with one of the people involved. I really enjoyed this book and think all zombie book lovers will like it too!!

5 out of 5 stars Zombie Fiction at its Best!! A Must Read!!.......2007-09-16

I have read most of the zombie fiction available out there and Dying to Live manages to deliver where most others fail. Here are the reasons:
1. Finally a zombie novel with horror in it. True horror.
2. Tons of action.
3. A storyline that doesn't involve survivors sitting around in a safehouse the entire time waiting for help.
4. A character with a mysterious ability over the undead that doesn't turn the book into the mummy returns.
5. Great bad guys. Characters that we pretend don't really exist just to be able to sleep at night.

4 out of 5 stars SOLID ZOMBIE NOVEL.......2007-09-14

Permuted Press has been making quite a name for themselves in the genre of zombie fiction and their latest release is Kim Paffenroth's "Dying to Live." The problem I have had with some zombie novels in the past is that the authors tend to set their sights a bit too high. While trying to tell a world-spanning tale of a zombie outbreak they often try to do too much and forget the smaller, personal stories. The best zombie stories/films were those that concentrated on the smaller picture, such as "Night of the Living Dead." Thankfully Paffenroth does not fall into this trap. He gives us one small, yet very appetizing piece of the zombie pie.

Paffenroth doesn't waste a lot of time explaining the zombie outbreak, preferring to jump right into the introduction of the main character, Jonah Caine, who has been surviving on his own since the catastrophe took place. Jonah is a plain, everyman...a former English professor at a community college, who has been resourceful enough to stay alive but grown weary by the stress of being on the run. A risky foray into a city to find food leads to Jonah meeting a small settlement of survivors who have turned a museum into their own fortress. The settlement's leader is Jack Lawson, your typical former military man but the most interesting character is the settlement's spiritual leader, Milton. In Paffenroth's zombie world, animals can also become zombies. When one of these undead animals bites Milton, he becomes essentially a human/zombie hybrid, carrying the stink and rot of death, yet not actually dying. Further, other zombies seem to fear Milton and are repelled when he walks among them, a useful ability indeed.

These survivors live in relative safety in their stronghold, leaving only for quick raids for food and supplies in the city. Jonah has to prove himself with a dangerous initiation rite by going on one of these raids. It is during one of these raids that they encounter another survivor, living alone with his newborn son in what turns into a harrowing rescue. With no real threat to them, they decide to go to the threat, by investigating smoke seen at the far end of the city. It's here where the survivors face the real horrors...a state correctional facility whose inmates have secured their own fortress.

"Dying to Live" is a solid, and often terrifying novel. The confrontations with the zombies keep are slam-bang thrill rides with something lurking behind each dark corner. The only real problem with the story is the last quarter of the book when Jonah and a few others encounter the prison inmates. Paffenroth ultimately made his characters too safe and secure in their museum home. The zombies were completely unable to mount any kind of a threat to them in their makeshift museum fortress. Paffenroth had to concoct a more serious threat than the legions of zombies themselves. A bit contrived, but not enough to spoil an otherwise brisk moving story with sufficient scares for any zombie fan. While I would have liked to have seen the characters developed a bit more, this is still an entertaining zombie fiction read.

5 out of 5 stars MY BOY LOVES READING.......2007-01-07

My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

5 out of 5 stars Jack & Annie in China.......2006-04-25

When Jack and Annie found out that they were going to China, they went straight to the treehouse. They met Morgan there, and she told them that they had to save a library in China. The dragon king was going to burn all the books, because he didn't like them. Jack and Annie saw a huge map of the castle where the emporer lived and they used it to help them find the library. In the end, Jack and Annie saved the library and were heroes again.

I liked this book because of the Terra Cotta soldiers (we have one of these at home !), the Chinese hats that Jack and Annie wore, and the dragon kings clothes. And I think I'm a good judge of Chinese things, since I was born in China !

5 out of 5 stars the burning of the books.......2006-02-02

I hate the way the Dragen King wanted to burn all the books in China. But I am glad that Jack and Annie saved one. They escaped eveything.

5 out of 5 stars The Trip to China.......2005-04-13

This story take place on China in the 1970, the boy and the girl were ready to go to China and they go in to get the bamboo book that is on the city, and they find two Chinese people. They take them to the city and they see people selling fish, the boy told them if they can take them to the library to find the bamboo book that has all the secrets of China.
This book is mostly about two kids that go to China to look for the bamboo book that is in the city of China. They went to the library with the secret library card and finally they found the bamboo book.

In my opinion, I think its a very good book because, the trip to China and the Great Wall and the Dragon King's tomb.

I LIKE THE BOOK AND I GOT MY BOOK IN 2DAYS.

3 out of 5 stars A condensed "Protein Power".......2007-03-11

If you read "Protein Power" but were befuddled by the diagrams and medical terminology and just wanted to know how it worked, "The 30-Day Low Carb Diet Solution" is what you're looking for. Drs. Michael and Mary Dan Eades give a simple, jargon-free explanation about how the diet works, then provide meal plans and recipes to get you started. It makes everything very easy to understand and you can jump right into it. The only annoying thing is that the book seems to be a pimp for the larger and way more detailed "Protein Power Lifeplan," as it's mentioned frequently in the body of the book. Still, if you're interested in low-carb this is a very good overview.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best! .......2007-03-05

Short, sweet and to the point. The Doctors Eades have a way of explaining complex things in easy to understand ways. Doesn't go as deep as Protein Power and Protein Power LifePlan. but instead gives a complete, but abreviated explaination of how our bodies use food as fuel and why some foods are better for us than others.

The recipes included are excellent! I have several that I make on a regular basis.

5 out of 5 stars The Nuts and Bolts of How to Eat and What to Eat Low Carb.......2005-08-04

If you don't need or want the science behind "Protein Power" or low carb eating, if you want to eat Low Carb healthy, then this is THE book to get. It's become my bible for low carbing as a way of life.

Three small questionnaires show whether low carbing is the way to go for you. A simple chart based on height and weight shows the minimum protein requirements per meal for women and men. The protein serving lists correlate with the protein charts to show what to eat and how much for small, medium, large, extra large, and extra-extra large protein servings. There are three Carbohydrate serving lists: Small servings for the corrective phase of the diet (weight loss or health restoring), Medium servings for transitioning for increasing the amount of carbs when approaching goal weight or health target values, and Large servings for the maintenance phase. What's the point of reducing weight or gaining health if you can't maintain it?

Carbohydrate servings include vegetables; fruits; and bread, cereals and grains. Yet another list shows the carb contents and quantities of combination foods (dairy, nuts and soy). There's several lists of what to eat of "good" fats. There's a generic easy meal plan, 30-days of meals as examples, how to do exchanges within the carb servings, and a section of recipes including egg dishes and breakfast foods; soups and salads; meat, fish and fowl dishes; vegetable dishes; vegetarian dishes; desserts and preserves; and condiments.

Not only have I lost weight from 134 (March 2005) down to 113 (June, 2005) and maintaining (I'm 4'11), I've gained health. My blood values are all within normal ranges. I have more energy, my moods have leveled out, my clothes fit beautifully and look good, I don't have any more sugar cravings or the feeling that there's not enough food on the planet to satisfy me, and I can easily adapt this way of eating to restaurants, social events, and vacationing. In fact, I lost a pound while out of town in Memphis, TN over the long Memorial Day weekend, 2005. By the way, there's a wonderful list of what to eat when dining out at many kinds of restaurants in the book "Protein Power," pages 126-130.

I have several of my patients in my acupuncture clinic following this way of eating through this book. Both are early stage adult-onset diabetics, both have dropped nearly 40 pounds in 4 to 5 months, both had gastric reflux which lessened and one with sleep apnea greatly improved. Blood sugar values for both have dropped. One patient was able to forego taking any medication for her diabetes, the other had her doseage reduced. Both of their general practitioner doctors are highly pleased.

This book is well worth your time and money. You've everything to gain (health and life).

3 out of 5 stars Good-but lots of room for improvement.......2004-03-08

The recipe index is not very well organized, and the book has several editing errors, but other than that: The 30 day meal plan is good, which is why I bought it, but (like a lot of other books) meal plans should keep the user in mind. Most people on a M-F schedule would prefer the Power Smoothie and Yogurt Cup recipes on a workday and the more time intensive Veggie Frittata and Lighter-than-air-Pancakes on Saturday and Sunday.
I also like the fact that several of the lunch plans are leftovers from a dinner prepared a day or two before, however it is not consistent and you never know whether to prepare the stated # of servings (usually 4) because you'll need the leftovers or pare it down to 2 if cooking only for 2, because if it's not used in a follow up lunch, you are either wasting 2 servings or eating more than needed.
I also think the information at the top of each recipe which lists # of servings and carb and protein amounts, should also list preparation and cook times, so you don't get caught offguard fixing dinner only to find your dish needs to marinate for an hour or two.
Well I'm not getting a consulting fee, so I'll end my critique.

Book Description

Eat good food, drink a little wine, lose weight! Sounds too good to be true? Not with The Wine and Food Lover's Diet. Created by a sports doctor with a background in nutrition, this is a diet that combines healthful eating with a love of eating. Imagine a meal of bacon-topped arugula salad, pecan-crusted chicken paired with the perfect glass of wine, and closing with chocolate souffl or some ice cream and a cup of coffee and then, even better, looking at the decrease on the scales the next morning. Dr. Phillip Tirman's 28-day plan sheds the pounds and the diet angst. He knows that most diets fail because they're based on restricting the foods everyone loves the most and they're impractical for today's busy lifestyles. So he has developed a lifetime eating plan based on satisfaction, not deprivation. The key to feeling slimmer and healthier? It's the surefire combo that is the foundation of the diet: one protein + two low-glycemic carbs = success. Using this formula, Dr. Tirman has created a menu plan to jump-start weight loss. He clearly and simply describes why high-glycemic carbs promote weight gain, while low-glycemic carbs do the opposite. Included are handy lists of beneficial Savvy Carbs and Super Savvy Carbs, which make it easy to tailor the diet to anyone's tastes plus 100 really delicious recipes with wine pairing suggestions, illustrated in full color. There's also clear advice for choosing take-out foods, for selecting diet-friendly restaurant dishes, and for using the diet to lose weight or simply to keep off the pounds already lost. The Wine and Food Lover's Diet is the ultimate key to a healthier, fuller, longer, and more satisfying life.

5 out of 5 stars Love Food and Wine!!!.......2007-09-27

This diet is unbelievable. I tried it because I was bored with other diets and was having trouble staying on them. This one was definitely different. It allowed me to eat healthy while exploring the many possibilities that cooking tasty cuisine has to offer. Well... with the added benefit of wine! The author does not take too much time explaining his philosophy and he made complete sense. I didn't find myself questioning whether or not his concepts were truly healthy. I just knew that they were. The recipes are delicious and adapting our own menu needs to the this diet was beyond simple. Just as an FYI: After about 9 weeks and I had shed 15-20 lbs we learned I was 3 weeks pregnant. Eating this way has many healthy benefits beyond just weight loss! I have had to adapt some of my eating habits to make sure the baby gets everything it needs; however, once the little one arrives I will be back on this diet (wine or not)!

5 out of 5 stars Really great book!.......2007-07-08

Dr. Tirman has done a terrific job explaining his easy plan for this healthy way to eat and giving the common sense rationale. If you want, though, you can just skip the rationale and just jump into the menu plans and the recipes!

Dr. Tirman's plan is very much like other plans that are well known right now, but the format of the book is specially easy to follow and the recipes are just amazingly delicious and easy to prepare! The photographs are beautiful and enticing--they make you want to prepare the foods. This is the first time I've actually looked forward to preparing "diet" recipes.

Generally Dr. Tirman does not specify portion sizes, but some of the recipes produce portions that to me are larger than might seem prudent. However, common sense and appetite do prevail! You really don't get hungry until the next mealtime. What a great way to manage weight and health: absolutely delicious food plus wine with dinner!

5 out of 5 stars Effective, delicious and easy to follow.......2007-06-06

I started Dr. Tirman's weight loss plan in January. Following the rapid weight loss plan of eating a protein + 2 super low glycemic foods (such as roasted chicken with butter sauteed mushrooms and grilled asparagus with grated parmesan cheese) AND wine, I lost 10 lbs in the first 2 weeks. Even after the rapid weight loss weeks when I was doing the maintenance plan, I shed 8 more lbs by following the book's principles, and am still losing weight. I worked out every once in awhile during the first 2 months and only recently started exercising more regularly. I even occasionally eat high glycemic foods such as bread and rice (because I would NOT be able to give up sushi), and still have not gained any weight. Just pair your higher glycemic foods with low glycemic foods or make sure your next meal falls well within the plan's guidelines.

This is a great, easy to follow plan. The recipes are simple and delicious, and if you know the underlying principles, you can make dishes that aren't in the book, and eat out anywhere. This weight loss and maintenance plan is definitley a lifestyle change and not a fad "diet."

3 out of 5 stars good diet.......2007-05-31

This is a very good diet based on solid principals except the writer has far too many eggs in his diet plan for me. Otherwise, it has very good recipes to try.

4 out of 5 stars Satisfying and Indulgent.......2007-05-18

One of the few diets that I have been able to stay with. It allows me my two glasses of wine a day, and enough interesting food to keep me from getting bored. I've lost six pounds in a month with little feeling of deprivation.

Some issues... you have to like to cook and spend time planning your meals, there are some hard to find ingredients, and the book would be much better if it included a weekly shopping list.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST-READ FOR EVERY PARENT OUT THERE.......2007-10-17

This book was 100% effective! We did a Diego theme potty party with my 2 1/2 year old son! What a sucess! I read the book about three time to better prepare myself for the big day and it paid off in the end! We had the potty party on a Thursday! That evening I was on cloud nine. Come Sunday, we were ALL smiling ear to ear and eager to see what MOnday had in store for my son as he would be returning back to daycare as a Big Boy! I would say that my son is 95% potty trained, if you go by the book's definition! He is wearing underwear for naps already and no "just in case pants"! So the only time my son is in Pull-Ups or "just in case pants" is at night time! He has been accident-free at school and is doing just as well at home! I would say that we get him to the bathroom in time moreso than he says "I've gotta go," but that skill is continuing to develope on a daily and even hourly basis! I recommend this book to anyone with a toddler...especially two and older!

And not only is this book great for joyfully succeeding potty training (both as a parent/teacher and child), there are many things taught and recommended, and tools provided, that can be applied in other areas of parenting! One must teach first...then train!

Go Teri Crane! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! An experience to always be remembered and WANTED TO BE REMEMBERED BY ALL!!!

Don't hesitate....BUY THE BOOK.....NOW! Allow yourself time to plan and prepare! Not something you can buy today and start tomorrow...unless you want to feel as you do right now all over again!

***** FIVE STARS ALL THE WAY *****

5 out of 5 stars Great tool for potty training any child.......2007-10-10

I bought this book after my best friend and my son's pediatritian reccommended the techniques used by Terri. I soon learned that my bigest battle for potty training my son was my readiness not his. What an eye opener. So after having my husband take the parent readiness test, we discovered that it would be better if he threw my son his potty party. And I am happy to say it worked! Since we had the party a month or so ago we have only had a couple of accidents (too preocupied) and have just conquered the overnight step, and my son is 3years and 3 months, yeah! I have to also note that I am doubly impressed with Terri. My best friend has had a terrible time, and I mean drag out, knock down, in tears terrible time with her son (same age as mine). So with nothing to loose I emailed Terri and to my surprise she called me back to give more help and suggestions. Needless to say my friend is relieved that even if things don't go smoothly, there are still ways Terri can help. Terri has so much compassion and concern for both parent and child. I never thought that I would have such an amazing expireince from just one book!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Parents of Toddlers!!.......2007-09-17

Teri Crane, the Potty Pro is outstanding. We bought her book for our 2.5 year old son and IT WORKS! We met Teri at a Potty Training Seminar, bought her book and she gave us her e-mail and phone number. Teri has even called us answering our potty training questions.

We didn't talk about potty training with our son until the day of the potty party. He never used the potty before our potty party. And during that afternoon, he went #1 in the potty. It's amazing! He loves his dolly and is so proud that he taught Dolly how to use the potty. He has gone on the potty for the last 2 weeks, with a few accidents. We threw his diapers away and he's so proud that he is a "big boy" now like Dolly! He wears big boy underwear like Dolly and even carries Dolly around with him!

Teri makes potty training fun and easy! It's a must read for all parents going through the joy of potty training their child! We are so proud of our son and he's proud of himself, thanks to Teri Crane!

3 out of 5 stars Too Overwhelming.......2007-09-07

I'm a party person, and a stay at home Mom, so I have the time. But this is a bit over the top. Even the author admits, your child will not be completely trained in one day. He or she will get there, and will be able to use the potty in one day. But for me, we'll go back to planning on several days of training, and a few weeks of consistant reinforcement. There are some great tips in the book, such as the doll to use, and the stickers, treats, etc. . . But the best tip was the little side bar leading me to the Huggies Big Kids web site. There's a ton of information there. Not a bad book, just a little over optimistic if you can't stay really exited about staying in the potty all day.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You! Thank You! It works!.......2007-08-11

First off, how can ANYONE "review" a book if they have not READ it? The negative reviews on this book are just plain silly. Just because you don't like the IDEA? Try putting the IDEA and PLAN into action and then you can honestly give a real review.

I bought this book on a whim. I've been wanting to potty train my 2 1/2 year old son for quite some time. At first I was highly skeptical! I thought, "Maybe for older kids who just need that little push. This will NOT work for my son who is completely oblivious to what's going on in his diaper!" I waited a couple of months to let life settle down. During this time he became more aware of his body and met all of the requirements in Teri's book.

Some reviewers complain about how much money you HAVE to invest and I just have to disagree. You CAN go all out, buy the most expensive doll and buy every single item on the recommended lists..or you can simplify things. I simplified our plan. I purchased a $12 "Lots to Love" doll from Wal~Mart and lots of stickers. We made our own chart up and had a nice supply of underwear on hand. I spent maybe $10 in snacks and had plenty left over to carry on through the week. You don't HAVE to do anything the book suggests, I went with the basic model and idea and we had a blast! My son was thrilled by his new baby, he was thrilled with a few new boardgames (which I would have bought anyways). He loved the attention and the games and all the books I read to him.

I didn't think my son would get into the roleplaying aspect, but he did! He fed his baby and showed his baby the potty and watched videos and read books with his baby. He named him George and he would say "Good Job George!" everytime George was successful. It was a wonderful morning and we celebrated George becoming a big boy by going to McDonalds. We got some strange looks over my SON carrying around a half naked babydoll wearing Thomas the Train underpants..but I didn't care! I proudly looked people in the eye and said "He's learning to be a big boy and is teaching his baby how to use the potty!"

I was VERY nervous about the second half of the day. Again, I was still skeptical. My son, obviously, LOVED having so much juice and treats and really got into racing Mama to the potty! He was successful the first time we tried it! Everytime he'd sit on the potty, he'd make sure George was sitting on his potty too! We went through 3 pairs of underpants that day and had a successful poo-poo in the potty! All the juice actually helped with my son's constipation problems!

We celebrated with just us. We ordered a pizza and gave our son a couple of small presents. He loved them and he loved his small little cake! You don't have to spend tons of money to teach your child simple concepts.

It has been almost 2 weeks since our party. He didn't magically train in one day, but the party kickstarted the process. He has good days and bad days..and the bad days are due to MY attitude and not being as excited about the process as I should be. He has learned so much and makes more and more advances with each passing day! He's gone from waking up in a SOAKING wet diaper, to sleeping in big boy underwear and waking up to go pee in the potty. He has gone from NO awareness to telling me in the middle of a fascinating movie "Mama I have to go pee pee!" We are on day 2 of NO accidents and I couldn't be prouder of my son! I may feel a little silly doing the pee-pee dance in a public restroom, but seeing the satisfied and happy look on my boy's face is worth all of the embarassment in the world!

The best part is the personal attention and assistance I received from Teri. I had emailed her, asking for advice on using public potties. My son was NOT interested. Imagine my surprise when I received a personal phone call from Teri herself! We had a wonderful conversation and she gave me some very helpful insight and encouragement. I told her I had recommended this book to all of my friends and the internets.

THANK YOU Teri for all of your help! I look forward to implementing your advice and am excited about my Big Boy! He is so proud of himself and I owe it all to Teri Crane!

3 out of 5 stars Commendable, But Not Convincing.......2007-04-13

Well written and scholarly work, but just doesn't explain convincingly from a Biblical standpoint, or justify for that matter why Christians shouldn't still be worshiping on the seventh day. As with most writers in defense of Sunday as the Christian day of worship, too much dependence upon the "early fathers," and ignoring volumes of texts from the New Testament. Texts that most won't even admit exist in favor of continued Christian observance of the sabbath. As Christ often warned in the gospels, there would be false prophets and false doctrines coming, in an attempt to betray believers. Even during the days of the apostles, these things were already in evidence. 1 John 4:1. And if these things were already creeping into the Apostolic Age, then it's not too hard to believe there were many false practices by the 2nd, 3rd and 4th centuries, during the times of these "Church Fathers" often quoted by scholars. Some as if these non-Biblical figures were the final word on Christianity.

And herein lies my disappointment with this book's explainations. So I counter with these arguments for why I am not convinced to abstain from seventh day sabbath worship, in favor of the so called "Lord's day" Sunday.

Reason 1: The Ten Commandments
It seems everyone in Christiandom is concerned about the lack of their presence in public schools and government offices. But when a good old Seventh-day Adventist like myself discusses the observance of all of them, including the 4th concerning the seventh day sabbath found in Exodus 20: 8-11, we're told "the law was nailed to the cross," and instantly branded "legalists!" Read for yourself, God doesn't leave room for "one-day-in-seven," he specificly states "the seventh day" and then refers us back to the creation. That "one-day-in-seven" approach is very popular today, but doesn't have a "thus saith the Lord" to stand on. See Genesis 2:2-3. And James 2:2-3 and Ecclesiates 12:13-14 says we're even going to be judged by those very commandments in the end.

Reason 2: Jesus And His Attitude Towards The Sabbath
Many quote from John 5 and proclaim that a sinless Jesus actually broke all the requirements of the 4th commandment. And yes, it does state that he broke it, but in its context along with other Bible passages, He only broke the traditional burdens that the Jews had tacked on to God's requirements. Read John 5:5-18, then compare his true thinking of what the sabbath is suppose to be for mankind. A devine rest. Matthew 11:28-30 and 12:1-13. In His own words, "it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days." Matthew 12:12. It was never God's purpose to make the sabbath a burden upon us. And being God the Son and Creator of all things, He was the very I Am in the Old Testament. 1 Corinthian 10:1-4, John 1:1-3 and Hebrews 1:1-2. In Luke 4:16 it was his "custom" not only to seek out worship on the sabbath, but also to participate in the worship service. And if that was His "custom" then, would it be any different if He were walking with us today? Where, and on what day would He seek to worship? Is He not the one mentioned in Hebrews 13:8 as "the same, yesterday, and to day, and forever."

Reason 3: The Disciples And New Testament Believers
Sunday keepers often quote Acts 20:7 and 1 Corinthians 16:1, as final evidence that 1st century Christians like the apostle Paul and Luke, were already observing Sunday as a day of worship, along with Peter, James and John. But you have only mention of these days as, "the first day of the week." Nothing sacred but simply certain things taking place on that particular day. In Acts 20, Paul preached until it was dark, brother Eutychus fell asleep and fell from the window dead, and Paul was able to miraculously bring him back to life. Verses 8-12. And the fact that they broke bread has no significance either, seeing they did this on a daily basis, Acts 2:46. 1 Corinthians 16:1-2 is "laying up in store" or literally at home in the Greek, on the 1st day of the week. A common work day in Biblical times. Paul was taking up collections for the poor, as in Romans 15:25-26, the poor saints in Jerusalem. He wanted the collections put aside at the beginning of the work week, after the sabbath, so gathering them would be orderly when he arrived. Anything else is reading into the text. No worship day mention whatsoever. And if you want to know how Paul really felt about which day was holy, read his own examples found in the book of Acts. In chapter 13:14-16 he was asked by the gentiles at Antioch to preach these things to them on the "next sabbath." Why not Sunday the following day? After all, these weren't Jews. But he waited till the following sabbath to give them the gospel. See verses 42-47 for a real eye opener. Has your Sunday keeping minister ever gone over these passages with you before? And Acts 11:26 tells us Antioch is where believers were first called Christians! Stunning coincidence or God's providence? For more of Paul's attitude on sabbath worship read chapters 17:1-5 and 18 verses 4 and 11. But going back to those who literally walked with Jesus and witnessed His crucifixion, we find in Luke 23:53-56 thru 24:1-3, they rested on the sabbath "according to the commandment." Didn't Jesus tell them of the change in days of worship before His crucifixion? Where? Passage and verse please.

Reason 4: The Claim That Revelation 1:10 refers to Sunday(The Lord's Day)
But where does John ever mention the day he's refering to? Once again, reading into the text something the rest of the Bible is silent on. But God does have a lot to say about which day He considers His. Remember in Matthew 12:8 Jesus said He was "Lord of the sabbath," so He had the perfect right to say what was good for that day. He was the one resting on and blessing it back in Genesis. John 1:1-3, Hebrew 1:1-2. And since He stated back in John 5 that He and His Father were "one," something the Jews wanted to stone Him for, He is also the one speaking of His(Lord's day) in Isaiah 58:12-14 and 56:1-7. Even pronouncing blessings upon those who were not Jews that keep the sabbath. And at creation, the Genesis account, there were no Jews yet. Was not Abraham the father of the Jews? But as born again believers, we are now spiritual Israelites and Abraham's Seed. See Galatians 3:27-29, Roman 2:26-29 and 3:28-31.

Reason 5: Confusion Over What Is The New Covenant
We are all in agreement that a covenant is an agreement, are we not? So what's the fuss about old and new? We all know that Christ is the vine and we are the branches. That without Him we can do nothing. See John 15:5. And that's what makes the difference between the old and new covenants. Christ living the life, doing His will through us and not we on our own. The new covenant doesn't nullify the Ten Commandments, his Grace fulfills the law through us. "I can do all things through Christ..." Philippians 4:13. In Exodus 19:3-8, where we find the first or old covenant being made, notice the children of Israel agreeing with God; "we will do." Keeping the law of God cannot be done through our own strength. God then writes out His moral law of Ten Commandments in chapter 20 of Exodus. Now read Hebrews 10:15-17 and you'll plainly see the new does not abolish the law of God, but He writes them on the heart. He comes in through the Holy Spirit, and changes the carnal nature. See Paul's delimma concerning keeping a holy law, and the solution in Romans 7:7,12 and 8:1-4. Notice it wasn't abolishing the keeping of the law, but having his carnal nature changed to a Spiritual one. It's called the rebirth. In Romans 7:7 Paul says the law is not sin, it tells us the definition of sin. Even naming the 10th "thou shall not covet" so there would be no doubt as to which law he's talking about. 1 John 3:4-6 goes even deeper saying "sin is the trangression of the law." Jesus came to save us from our "sins." In Sunday churches throughout the world, isn't it a goal to save lost sinners from their "sins" through the preaching of the Gospel? We don't keep the law to be saved, we can now keep it because we are saved. That is why so many misunderstand the words of James 2:26, "...faith without works is dead."

Reason 6: There Are Two Distinct Laws, One Moral The Other Ceremonial
And both laws even have sabbaths. God's eternal moral law of Ten Commandments includes the 4th in Exodus 20:8-11, the seventh day sabbath, a memorial to His creation. Take the time to read it. While the Mosaic or ceremonial considers all Jewish holy days, including Passover and The Day of Atonement as sabbaths, Leviticus 23. Read the entire chapter to get the full context of ceremonial sabbaths, which from year-to-year can fall on any day of the week. Another reason so many confuse what "sabbath days" were nailed to the cross in Colossians 2:16-17. Or the argument about the keeping of certain days, which Paul refered to as "doubtful disputations" in Romans 14. They were shadows of the true Lamb of God to come. Where as the seventh day sabbath existed after God made and blessed a perfect world, before sin and any need of shadows and blood sacrifices. Genesis 1:31-2:1-3. See also Hebrews 10:1. And one of the most important distinctions that most want to gloss over, is that God wrote the moral Ten Commandments on 2 tables of stone with His very own finger, as found in Exodus 31:17-18. The ceremonial law of Moses was written by Moses in a book or scrolls. Leviticus 31:24-26 and Joshua 8:31.

Reason 7: The Sabbath Will Be Kept In The New Heaven And Earth
Isaiah 66:23-24 tells us that from one new moon(or month), and from one sabbath to another "all flesh" will come to worship before God. Though some have even proposed that this text refers to the ceremonial law, due to the mention of "new moons," we know that a new moon represents the change of months. Something Revelation 22:2 mentions concerning new fruit appearing every month on the tree of life throughout eternity.

In conclusion, Is it any wonder God put the words "remember the sabbath day to keep it holy" right in the middle of the Ten, being all knowing, and foreseeing man's forgetfulness of that commandment? The only one of the Ten most Christian groups seemingly want to forget.

4 out of 5 stars Carson versus Bacchiocchi........2005-12-17

Authors of this volume repeatedly contrast their opinion with Bacchicchi's, so reader have to know Bacchiocchi's "From Sabbath to Sunday" for better understanding this investigation. Carson takes evangelical stand in sabbath/sunday question, but Bacchiocchi presents the Seventh-day adventists view. Both works are valuable and scolarly deep.
Bacchiocchi got golden medal from Pope Paul VI for his dissertation "From Sabbath to Sunday", he made in the Pontifical Gregorian University of Rome, and his work has an Imprimatur of Roman Catholic Church.
Carson in this book try to refute theses of Bacchiocchi, but conclusions there sometimes seems foggy.
So I give four stars.
Each one personally have to evaluate both these books and make own conclusions about meaning of Sabbath today.

5 out of 5 stars Insights into a Christian view of the sabbath.......2004-07-25

This book is pricey, but invaluable. It will make you think about the relationship between
the New Testament and the Old Testament
the law of Moses and the law of Christ
the Jewish sabbath and Christian worship
and many other important issues.

The various authors, who were Cambridge post-graduate students, worked together on their book, and have come to quite a close agreement on the issues involved.

Table of Contents

Sabbath and Sunday in the Medieval Church in the West by R J Bauckham
Sabbath and Sunday in the Protestant Tradition by R J Bauckham
From Sabbath to Lord's Day: a Biblical and Theological Perspective by A T Lincoln

The stance of the book is close to New Covenant Theology. The authors do not regard the sabbath as a creation ordinance or as binding for Christians, either as the seventh or first day of the week.

The book is available new, or second-hand from Amazon partners [but sometimes the used copies are even more expensive!] But it is a most stimulating book, and well worth your time.

Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars A real patient/therapist encounter.......2007-07-27

What I love about this book is that it takes you into an unspoken territory of patient and therapist. In the same light as a photojournalist goes behind the scenes to capture events; We capture the inside life of both patient and therapist in a moving and human experience. In exchange for money, Dr. Yalom agrees to see Ginny on the basis that they will each write honest and open reports of each session, so he can create this book. We get an inside look into the passion and desire of a therapsit in his faciliatation of change, as well as, a deep look at a struggling patient admitting to her defenses, emotions, and maladaptive behaviors. A wonderful insight into the blossoming of a relationship that will change both therapist and patient. I highly recommend for anyone who is interested in the field of psychology.

2 out of 5 stars Not quite as interesting as I expected.......2007-05-30

As I am not a student of psychology and not a therapist I read Yalom's books from a layman's point of view, as I find stories of personal development and change very interesting. However, I found this particular book to be somewhat tiresome and I must admit I got a bit bored as I longed for Ginny's process to move on. I guess that reading such detailed descriptions of each session was finally not as exciting as expected. I personally prefer to read the general story of a patient in Yalom's other books with tales of psychotherapy.

5 out of 5 stars Making Sense of the Therapeutic Relationship.......2006-07-24

This is a very courageous book about a very courageous project. It touched me deeply. Brief entries from a master therapist and a writer patient in which each describes what happened for them in each session over a year or so personalize the therapeutic process. One can read a half dozen self help books about therapy and never come as near to understanding the meaning of the therapeutic relationship as well as in this book. While this is not Yalom's best book in literary terms - he was clearly still thinking about being a writer rather than being one - his willingness to expose his own feelings, needs and strategy as a man and a therapist to both the patient (who got to read his entries periodically) and reader is enriching. The book is a good exposition of Yalom's thesis that therapy is ultimately and primarily about the relationship between patient and therapist in which what goes on in the 45 minute hour is the most important element in healing.

5 out of 5 stars Life...Or Something Like It.......2005-09-07

This is one of those books I couldn't wait to run back to. In those free moments between dishes and the bank, and the relaxed air of bedtime, I reveled in anticipation, because this book is like a talk with my best friend. Maybe better. Candor, humor and delightful poetic insights ramble through the hills and valleys of this therapeutic reality fest. I came away with a new sense of myself and the possibilities of my life. I will miss Dr. Yalom and Ginny. If you are looking for Mary Higgins Clark you're in the wrong place. If you're looking for a friend you don't want to let go, this is your lucky day.

3 out of 5 stars not the best yalom has to offer..........2001-01-11

this was his book i was most excited to read, and while i think the concept is great, i don't think it really worked. the accounts were often long-winded and dull, and when there were little gems within that made it worth wading through, they were often hidden amidst pages of muck. i still think the idea behind the book is strong and could work, however, and i admire yalom for trying, but at the same time i wonder if it's not somewhat unethical to reveal so much to a patient about the therapist's feelings, and also to give her free therapy in exchange for writing for him - like, is it a conflict of interest on his part, and therefore countertherapeutic? also, the book doesn't really say if she got better in the long-term. i'm not so sure... still glad i read the book, but didn't honestly feel i got too much out of it. many of his other books are head and shoulders above this one...

5 out of 5 stars This book is a must for ADD'ers!!.......2007-09-02

I purchased this book in about 1991. Due to my constant struggles with undiagnosed ADD, I didn't actually read it until about 4 years ago. In fact, up until that time I had read maybe 10-12 books in my entire life. Despite everything I tried, I couldn't stay focused on most books longer than about 3 minutes. (Yes, that explains why I failed so many classes in high school for not completing reading assignments, book reports, reading the instructions, etc., etc.)

I browsed through the first few chapters, probably ignoring most of it. But I kept at it even after having to re-read entire pages where my mind had wandered. After several hours, I finally made it through the initial reading speed test. I still have the paper that says I read 250 words a minute and I figured I had about 15% retention (basically nothing, like normal - and that is only if my mind didn't completely wander off). Using the simple subsonic reading techniques described in this book I was immediately able to get just over 600 words per minute with an amazing retention of, well... everything! I was stunned! My wife quizzed me about the sample chapter I read and I answered everything correctly. I was simply amazed!

I found the simple techniques for subsonic reading superb and worth ten times the amount the book cost me. As for the rest of the topics in the book, such as student priorities, scheduling, essay writing; I really didn't care about because I wasn't a student. However, the introduction to mind-mapping was good and provided an excellent jump-off point for learning more.

But, I would like to comment about those people who are looking for a book to try to achieve the "super-sonic" reading speeds or whatever it's called these days. Those people should probably just accept that if anyone can actually do that it is because they had at least 95% of the talent/ability before a book or program helped them discover it and not because of any magic technique.

By the way, I have read well over 100 books since reading Remember Everything You Read, both fiction and non-fiction books. My current reading speed is a comfortable pace of about 800-900 words per minute. But, even still, the absolute best part about having read this book is that I remember what I read! And, that has truly changed my life.

3 out of 5 stars Remember everything you read.......2007-08-11

I didn't really like this book because it made you feel like you had to read really fast on everything! Not true!

5 out of 5 stars It works!.......2007-06-14

Amazon.com is the only place I could find this book! Go figure! It has helped me learn to read faster, and so to get through my university classes faster and easier. Why isn't it on the all-time best-seller list?

5 out of 5 stars Remember Everything You Read.......2007-03-09

I purchased this as a gift for a 72 year old friend that was having trouble reading. He has said this has helped his memory and the speed of his reading is ten fold from waht is was.

2 out of 5 stars Alot of work.......2006-06-18

it is probably true that if you do what it says in the book you will probably have a small increase in speed but you would have to do the silly exercizes every day for a long time to see any increase. the exercezes are like this: read 2-3 pages and time your self, then read those same pages in half that time, then in 1/4 that time. another excersize is: read for 2 minutes, then starting from where you left off read for 2 more minutes, but pass through twice as many pages... and repeat... basically it is a way to trick yourself into reading a little bit faster, but I think that most of the benifit that I got was because the book told me about twenty times that I was reading faster. I will admit that I didn't stick with the program for very long, but I think that if you want to read fast the best solution is to read alot, and probably having a good night's sleep will help you more than this book will. However, I will admit that I didn't stick with the program very long, so it is possible that it works for you, but for someone that doesn't want to spend the time to find out... I'll just assume that My origional idea was right.

A really good part about the book is that it does a good job of motivating you to educate yourself, and to work on your own intellegence. Something that I need to do alot.
