5 out of 5 stars Pole construction - a wonderful alternative for great value........1999-12-10

I gave the book five stars because there was a total lack of books on the subject when I read it months ago. Thanks to Amazon, there is now more available. I am a developer of lots. I have seen what the family faces with home buying. The pole house will only be for the stout-hearted, brave and good humored. But for those few souls it will be a wonderful experience. This book takes you from day one - walking onto your lot - to the finished product. And it tells you everything in between like, how to get your friends to gleefully help you plant your poles to having an old "barn raising". It's good stuff. It's dated, but if you're an ol' fashion American pioneer like me, you'll love the challenge.

4 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners.......2007-08-01

My boyfriend has a pole in his house and challenged me to learn how to use it. So I ventured out to do some research and stumbled across this book. When it came, I watched the DVD first and was actually impressed! After watching the DVD, I read the book and it was awesome!

She not only talks about exotic and pole dancing techniques, but she also provides tips like how to wear your make-up, how to do your hair, what type of shoes to wear, and even trimming up the bikini line (VERRRRRY IMPORTANT)! She makes you feel comfy with your body since all of us aren't shaped like the poles we are learning to dance with.

All in all, I was thoroughly pleased with this book and I would definitely recommend it if you're just starting out and need some basic techniques and a little guidance!

2 out of 5 stars Ok for the curious.......2007-06-16

Book and vidoe are ok. I have since purchased videos adn books which are much better.
Effective at showing the moves although the presenter looks a bit clumsy and not that sexy.
Felt it was a bit cheesy - the dance names, which other videos and books are pretty much consistent this one renames with "student and friend's" names.
Book is ok- for beginners and those just wanting to maybe use it for spice. For more professionally done woudl recommend Fawnia, or Edith Aboul-Hosn videos.

5 out of 5 stars Great explanations, lots of variety... and lots of fun!.......2007-05-14

Wow, this book is a steal for $20. You get a well-written, thoroughly entertaining and funny book loaded with creative ideas, suggestions and advice- plus a DVD with examples of what you see in the book. It's a great deal. Not to mention the author really knows her stuff.

I love her comfortable approach, helping reduce anxiety over dancing "dirty," etc. As a former stripper, I find that many many women want to learn how to strip/lapdance/pole dance but are afraid of the social consequences, so I adore her reassurance throughout: this is fun, this is good exercise, this is for you and let no one make you feel any shame about being a sexy goddess. Amen, sister. Also emphasizes imperfect bodies and how to make your "imperfections" work to your advantage and learn to embrace them. Required reading for all shy violets and anyone who has ever said, "I'm too ___ to be a sexy dancer/stripper/etc."

Very highly recommended if you don't have a pole, if you just want some sexy moves to impress your partner or just look hot in front of your mirror at home. Also recommended if you have just invested in a pole and want a place to start that's basic and yet, provides room to grow. A masterpiece, a bargain.

4 out of 5 stars pole dancing how to's.......2007-05-06

I like most of the tricks that this dancer does but it is way too dancey for me and she tends to talk down to the audience. She does do a good job of illustrating how to do the tricks though! I really prefer the S Factor version of pole dancing but there are no DVD's of hers that show any inverted or the more complex pole tricks. This DVD does show them. For that reason I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book and D.V.D. on Stripping.......2007-03-20

I have purchased more than a few D.V.D.'s on stripping(books as well) and I have to say this is by far the best I've seen.
Stripping, lapdancing, polework and even (So Awesome!!!)chair dancing!!! The chairdancing and lapdancing instructions are worth the price of the book alone:)
There is really so much info, ideas and tips it will keep you inspired for years. At least!
The instruction in book and D.V.D. are very clear. You know exactly how to perform each move. No geussing.
Also,on my stupid moves meter from 0 to 10 this rates 0. Everything is very useable and sexy.
I've purchased at least 2 d.v.d.'s which scored high on the stupid moves meter and I really wished I hadn't purchased 'em.
This along with the S Factor book and d.v.d.'s are the only ones you will need. Lots of stuff to play with.
Anyway, Love this book/d.v.d. I would highly recommend.

Book Description

The sun never sets, the air is twenty degrees below zero, and the ice is moving at four hundred yards an hour. Welcome to the North Pole. In 2003, environmental reporter Andrew Revkin joined a scientific expedition to one of the world's last uncharted frontiers, where he was the first New York Times reporter ever to file stories and photographs from the top of the world. In his quest to understand the pole, Andrew leads readers through the mysterious history of arctic exploration; he follows oceanographers as they drill a hole through nine feet of ice to dive into waters below; peers into the mysteries of climate modeling and global warming; and ultimately shows how the fate of the pole will affect us all.

timely topic, but book isn't exactly dense. more of a children's primer on Arctic issues.

5 out of 5 stars *'Walking on Water' takes on NEW MEANING . . . *.......2007-01-03

After moving 400 yards an hour on an ice floe at the top of the world for three days, Science Writer Andrew Revkin looks down from a helicopter. He watches the icy expanses recede far below while he weighs questions and answers about global warming, and the challenge of presenting these to young readers who are often lured in other directions by iPods & computer games.

Tomorrow's scientists need to be 'shook up' and know there are still discoveries to be made; they can be the ones inventing new techniques needed to retrieve & examine rock core samples from deep below the ice. (See pictures on page 66). They can be detectives competing with the changing ice for answers to frustrating puzzles about the rising seas, for example.

The editor has used engravings and diagrams along with the latest photographs to give an impressive smattering of the history of arctic exploration. The double-spread of a lone seal on pages 100-101 should have been placed to better advantage, to help make Revkin's point about the loneliness of the Arctic where the silence is often interrupted by questions about the future of mankind. This is a excellent, stimulating book for all ages to read and discuss together.

The polar regions have always drawn explorers and it is our luck that the New York Times sent Andrew Revkin to the North to look for ways of stirring the public. We must each take an active interest and help stimulate youthful curiosity by showing the techniques used today. It is not enough to feel the exhilaration of travel without becoming responsible global citizens. In a recent interview by Gwen Iffel on PBS, Revkin cited the "slow drift" of events that do not receive adequate coverage by the media, as for example the recent announcement that the first whale species in China is now extinct. Consider also the projection that by 2040 the Arctic Ocean could be blue for the first time in a thousand years.

Already the levels of contaminates in the bodies of Inuit persons living in the North is beyond acceptable. The Pole is indeed moving . . . can we be instrumental in putting the puzzle pieces back together and work toward unity for the good of the Earth and our children's future?

We must not lose generations of the ingenuity of bright young minds to Wars and the Pestilence of mediocre minds.

3 out of 5 stars Comments on The North Pole Was Here: Puzzles and Perils at the Top of the World.......2006-09-18

While intended for a young audience this serves as a very basic introduction to Arctic exploration and scientific study. Scientific and political issues mentioned could have been a good springboard for young adults to understand that scientific methods can serve as a process to follow when trying to answer difficult questions. Additionally, it is unfortunate that Mr. Revkin did not include even a passing mention of Dr. John Rae (Fatal Passage). This is a good book to provoke discussion and does little to answer the "big" questions. Mr. Revkin also might consider using a paradigm from Paracelsus that all substances are toxic - its the dose that differentiates the poison.

Exiled to Siberia

In June 1942, the Rudomin family is arrested by the Russians. They are "capitalists -- enemies of the people." Forced from their home and friends in Vilna, Poland, they are herded into crowded cattle cars. Their destination: the endless steppe of Siberia.
For five years, Ester and her family live in exile, weeding potato fields and working in the mines, struggling for enough food and clothing to stay alive. Only the strength of family sustains them and gives them hope for the future.

5 out of 5 stars Love this book!.......2007-05-05

I, too, read this book in elementary school and while it took me forever to find it, I'm so glad I did. Esther is a young girl when her family is taken from Poland to the Siberian Steppe during WWII. The story chronicles one of loss, love, and the strength of family in times of need. You also get to take part in Esther's growth from a child to a young woman in the face of adversity. A definite must-read for anyone, young person or adult.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2007-04-24

The story of a young girl and her family's trials of living in Siberia during WWII. It is an excellent book to include with a unit study of the Holocaust. The author weaves the truth along with some humor. Excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Courage among evil.......2007-04-24

I read this book in junior high school and was thrilled to find it again, although the reading is no less sad now than it was 30 years ago.

Adolescent Esther is arrested along with her family and sent to labor in Siberia. Given only minutes to pack, she seizes photo albums - and her mother packs her clothes instead. Bereft of her home and all she owns, her memories and her family members are now all she has left.

Her grandfather is sent to a concentration camp and never seen again. Left alone with her mother and grandmother, she struggles to survive yet manages to find some happiness among the desolation. A moving story of the Polish holocaust from the eyes of a teenage girl. Highly recommend for young adults, and everyone else

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite all time books!.......2007-04-01

This book is a treasure...a true story, and a sad one yet it is filled with so much hope. The author has written such a beautiful story out of circumstances that weren't so beautiful, they are ordinary people with a stong love for one another and family ties that are true committments. This is one that I have read many times and will read again.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Book.......2006-05-23

This is good story of a family who looks to have lost it all but still has their hope and in the end they prevail by.This book teaches us never to take anything for granted because in a flash it could all be gone. A well written book

Serving as doctor to the Americans "wintering over" at the South Pole in 1999, Jerri Nielsen made headlines when she discovered a lump in her breast that a self-administered biopsy revealed to be an aggressive, fast-growing cancer. No flights in or out of Antarctica are possible during the continent's long winter, and Nielsen's account of giving herself chemotherapy while she and her fellow "Polies" waited for the weather to break is even more gripping than the news reports at the time. She's candid about her pain and fear; the media battle waged by her embittered ex-husband makes her ordeal even more challenging. Interestingly enough, however, this high drama does not overshadow Nielsen's deeper narrative of a woman who came "to the Ice" seeking new meaning in a life shattered by divorce and estrangement from her children. In the back-to-basics world of Antarctic medicine, with outdated equipment, few supplies, and no assistants, she rediscovered her vocation as a doctor, free from the imperatives of corporate-directed medicine. More importantly, Nielsen found spiritual solace in the world's most extreme environment, where she was "introduced slowly to the notion of giving more than you have and using less than you need ... of knowing that all you really own are your own thoughts." She makes the glories of the Pole so palpable that, by the end, readers will not even be surprised when she signs an e-mail to her family, "from the wonderful Ice." --Wendy Smith

5 out of 5 stars Life at the South Pole.......2007-03-05

This book is the story of Dr. Nielsen's time working at the south pole. It is full of anecdotes of everyday events that gave me a feeling for what life must be like in such a remote place.

It reminded me a lot of science fiction and especially Kim Stanley Robinson's Red Mars. Robinson has another book on Antarctica that is said to be very similar to Red Mars. It's uncanny how similar Dr. Nielsen's account is to science fiction stories about space colonization.

Maybe the idea of life on the frontier brings out these themes. The difficulty of life makes people work together and abandon some of the petty problems from home. That gives people a new perspective on the culture of their home.

This story also made me consider how psychologically hard cancer must be. Dr. Nielsen says being in Antarctica in some ways made it easier because she didn't have to deal with daily ups and downs as the results of many tests came back. They only had the most basic diagnostic equipment in Antarctica.

Nielsen is honest about her fear of her illness and the pain of being alienated from her kids. Although it's unlikely because of her history of cancer, I hope the powers that be approve her for more work in remote locations.

5 out of 5 stars Ice Bound: A Doctor's Incredible batttle for Survival at the South Pole.......2007-01-29

The book was worth every penny and it was sent in a timely manner.

5 out of 5 stars Warm and Beautiful, not gruesome........2006-08-04

This book was a fascinating portrait of the American South Pole Station and the people who winter over there. It is rich with details that one would never have thought of, like the difficulty of contacting the outside world when the communications satellite only peeks over the horizon for a brief time each day. All the people at the station are portrayed as exceptional, (maybe eccentric), strong, very human people who survive in part because of the great love and respect with which they treat each other--not to mention a strong sense of humor! Really inspiring. Made me want to go there myself.

4 out of 5 stars Where Life and Death Meet the Ice.......2005-09-19

"Ice Bound" is three stories that come together to create one indelible experience: a woman's struggle and escape from an abusive marriage, a travel adventure to the South Pole, and a life and death fight against cancer. Dr. Jerri Nielsen lived all three of these stories and writes about how they merged into one phenomenal journey.

Some reviewers have been critical of Dr. Nielsen's motives or of the construction of her memoir. I cannot share their criticism-I found Nielsen's story to be an excellent telling of excitement, struggle, self doubt, and near death at the extremes of the Earth. I have lived high above the Arctic Circle; I know the wonder and awe one sees in the ice, the humbling realization that death awaits behind any mundane mishap. Despite this tension, day upon endless day passes beneath skies that are forever light or forever dark, an exotic sameness that captivates but provides little material for a full-length book. If anything, I congratulate Dr. Nielsen and her co-writer, Maryanne Vollers, for being able to relate Nielsen's story in such depth and detail, to have been able to sift through the routineness of life at South Pole Station for enough material to construct an interesting book.

Dr. Nielsen was diagnosed with breast cancer during an Antarctic winter. We cannot blame the victim; Dr. Nielsen did not wish this condition upon herself. She did not want others to risk their lives on her behalf-others made that choice for themselves. Dr. Nielsen could not have stopped them if she had tried. The story of the courage and dedication of others is as important a theme in Dr. Nielsen's experiences as is her own internal fight to overcome loss and despair.

I recommend "Ice Bound" for a very accurate and authentic description of life in polar places. Nothing takes the romance out of extreme places more than a true story well told. I think that her struggle against cancer would have to energize others suffering from the same condition, and I think that her children's alienation from her by a vindictive ex-spouse is a more common story than many may realize.

3 out of 5 stars What Coulda Been Great Turned Out Just Good..........2005-07-31

Dr. Jerri Nielsen's trek to the South Pole would have been filled with danger no matter what...most of the people that head down there must have a few screws loose to want to spend a year in complete darkness, with extremely cold temperatures, only to lose (in part) their social skills, their memories, and their sanity. What makes her story somewhat extraordinary is the fact that as the only trained medical professional 'wintering over' at the South Pole, she diagnosed and was forced to treat her own breast cancer with a small untrained support staff.

The book takes you on the journey of how Nielsen got to the pole - and how she got out, and the factors attributed to both. With mounting frustrations over her estranged family, including her children, and with the US medical system, Nielsen, an adventurer in her mind, took up the opportunity to head down south...way south. What lay there was a network of amazing friends, and a workload of amazing proportions. Even in the cancer-ridden portions of Jerri's story, she often mentions lighthearted evenings and events and the plight of others over her own pain.

My problems with the book? First off I'm not a huge fan of how Nielsen wrote the story. Her tone is somewhat smug, as though she is writing an insiders guide that can only really be understood by her fellow "polies". She re-iterates many times over how special and wonderful it was, and how clueless the rest of the world is, and while I believe the experience was incredible, 160+ pages of exposition about the day-to-day events of the pole isn't necessarily relevant to the tag line of the book "A Doctor's Incredible Battle for Survival"...it almost feels as though Jerri would have written this book as a memoir for herself had it not been for the international interest in her cancer case. The main interest being her cancer, it is somewhat misleading as to what Jerri actually puts into the book, as though she wants to make sure she acknowledges every person that came across her path while she was there, rather than discuss her cancer case.

My second issue was with the language. At times the medical talk was too intense for the average reader, leaving you drawing blanks. Most of the understanding of Jerri's cancer came from the back and forth e-mails between Nielsen and her cancer specialist Kathy.

Another issue I had was how the book meandered at times with Jerri's dreams and plans for the future. There were some e-mails and long descriptions of what Jerri and other wanted to do that I could hardly be bothered to read them in entirety. I think most people, like myself, would be more interested in the present situation in the story rather than read a two-page letter her brother wrote on sailing his boat into space.

I think altogether I appreciated this book more of a study of Antartica and what it is like to live there (insane by the way) rather than reading it for the sensational story Nielsen promises to divulge in regards to her cancer. I have admiration for what she did, and think it was important for her to acknowledge the media in some way, but I just wasn't totally sold on the actual book itself.

A magical train ride on Christmas Eve takes a boy to the North Pole to receive a special gift from

Amazon.com

One couldn't select a more delightful and exciting premise for a children's book than the tale of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve only to have Santa Claus sweep by and take him on a trip with other children to the North Pole. And one couldn't ask for a more talented artist and writer to tell the story than Chris Van Allsburg. Allsburg, a sculptor who entered the genre nonchalantly when he created a children's book as a diversion from his sculpting, won the 1986 Caldecott Medal for this book, one of several award winners he's produced. The Polar Express rings with vitality and wonder.

Amazon.com Audiobook Review

The Polar Express book and CD gift set is a charming collage of enchanting sounds, lyrical words, and climatic storytelling. Read by Academy Award-winning actor William Hurt, author Chris Van Allsburg's children's classic--a winner of the Caldecott Medal--is accompanied by a handsome melody and the sweet sounds of sleigh bells, train whistles, and spirited cheers from hundreds of Santa's elves. The composition stirs the listener's imagination, bringing to life the magic of Christmas. Coupled with a hardcover book (and a special gift from Santa's sleigh), listeners can read along and gaze at luminescent drawings page after page. The Polar Express touches the imagination of those "who truly believe." (Running time: 11 minutes, one cassette) --Cate Bick

5 out of 5 stars Christmas Classic.......2007-10-15

I bought this for my sister who is a 2nd grade teacher. She gave it to an underprivileged child in her room. The child was amazed at how beautiful the drawings were...she said she was the luckiest child in the world. This book made my Christmas!

4 out of 5 stars A Classic Christmas Story.......2007-05-24

One Christmas Eve a boy laid in his bed, all of the sudden he heard something. He heard a sound so different. A friend once described this sound to him. It was The Polar Express.

The Polar Express tells a fiction story of a boy who rides on The Polar Express train one Christmas Eve. The North Pole is where Santa was a waiting to give the first gift of Christmas. That gift will be given to someone on that train. Everyone hopes it is them but only one, only one can get the first gift.

I bet at one time or another you have all heard this story. It is a classic. The author, Chris Van Allsburg, tells this story so well. He also uses meaning beyond this books reading level. Chris says "Though I've grown old, the bell still rings for me as it dose for the ones who believe." If you read this quote once you will just think it's about believing in Santa. When you read it again and think about it, it could mean anything. It could mean believing in yourself, friends, family, ECT.
Even though a bell dose not ring for all of these reasons still believe, it's the best thing you can do.

4 out of 5 stars The Polar Express By Chris Van Allsburg.......2007-05-23

This is a good book for kids becuase it states that any thing is possible. The genre may be fiction, but it still teaches a valuable lesson. The story is set in modern times and takes place in the winter. The author does a good job at explaining what the scenery looks like, een with out the graphics.Any one who likes christmas of all ages will like this book. The main character seems to be outspoken and mellow.the story is much the same with other books also called
The Polar Express by other authors, but it still teaches a valuable lesson for kids. Overall, I give this book a 4 out of 5

5 out of 5 stars "The Polar Express" awesome book review.......2007-05-23

"The Polar Express" is a timeless story meant for all ages. It forces us to think about the disadvantage of growing up. When it's Christmas Eve a young boy suddenly hears a train whistle outside his window. He is welcomed aboard the Polar Express by the train conductor and many other children ready to depart on a trip to the North Pole. It is there that they will meet Santa and find out who the special child is that will receive the precious first gift of Christmas.
This fantasy story is one of the best-written about the true meaning of Christmas. The realistic details and dialogue more the story along. The style and meaning behind the plot is enough to make you remember it for years to come.
When reading "The Polar Express" all you think about is meeting Santa and discovering the gift of Christmas. Anyone who likes a well-told story with a moral to remember will love this book!

Book Description

The North Pole is an account of a summer trip the author made to the North Pole on a Russian nuclear-powered icebreaker, and is illustrated with 120 color photographs. Brown intersperses her narrative with excerpts from the journal of Fritdjof Nansen, who explored that area a hundred years ago, and with conversations with travelers, scientists, and a polar archivist about ideas concerning the Arctic that affect the world today. The weather at the North Pole influences weather thoughout the world, and global warming is a sub-theme of the book.

5 out of 5 stars "From the Past to the Future".......2006-01-21

Very well-written, with excellent photo sections that illustrate previous written sections. Chapters alternate between gripping diaries of early historic explorers, the author's own North Pole experience on a nuclear-powered Russian ice breaking ship, and lively interviews with scientists who study the arctic and global climate.

5 out of 5 stars Much More Than an Artic Journey.......2005-02-16

Kathan Brown's, The North Pole, is a unique and profound book. The interweaving of present, past and (potential) future, create an ephemeral sense of time and place. Brown's direct documentary style allows the reader to draw their own conclusions, to participate and experience for themselves the layers of metaphor that abound in this unique journey. The reader traverses the terrain of the physical and the ethereal, the dark and the light, the unknown and the known, the beautiful and the terrifying. Blocks of wonderful color photos interlace with the
structured sections of Brown's journey account, the journal excerpts of early explorer, Fridtjol Nansen, (unbelievable!) and the conversations Brown records with fellow travelers, scientists, and naturalists. This book is simply, yet brilliantly, organized. It is beautiful. It evokes a sense of vast spaciousness and wonder and raises provocative haunting questions regarding the future of the planet. It is a gem!

4 out of 5 stars Cavalletti: The Schooling of Horse and Rider over Ground Poles.......2006-11-12

This is an excellent book for those looking for a systematic way of including cavalletti in their youngster's training. Ingrid and Reiner give excellent explanations and also provide photos/drawings to further describe what they are looking for. I have used this method in training my own youngsters with good results. One caution however, it doesn't matter how good the information is if the person applying it is unskilled or inexperienced.

5 out of 5 stars Great visual aids .......2005-09-21

I couldn't put this book down! Chocked full of color photos makes this pleasing to use and wonderful to leaf through for ideas and an excellent reference. A good reminder of sound, basic training principles. A great addition to any library for dressage, hunter or jumper riders.

5 out of 5 stars A must have - inspirational!.......2004-10-31

I just love this book. I've never been so inspired to make a trip to Home Depot - I couldn't wait to build my own cavalletti and get out there and give it a try. Directions for building your own can be found here: www.texashorsemansdirectory.com/thdcav.htm This book provides an excellent introduction to working with cavalletti and is a must have for the English rider. Easy to read, well illustrated, great schooling plans and the gymnastic jumping section at the end is an added bonus. FUN, FUN, FUN!

5 out of 5 stars Cavalletti for everyone.......2003-03-24

I'm not a brave jumper and this book has really encouraged me to incorporate more ground poles and cavalletti into my regular training regime.

My main interest is dressage but my enthusiasm for trying more pole and jumping work has been set alight by this book. They cover everything from the most basic information like boots for your horse, distances for different gaits and even how to adjust side reins correctly, right through to patterns and techniques to keep things interesting.

The language used is simple, conversational and incredibly useful. Each topic - lunging, straight work over poles, gymnastic jumping etc - is addressed in detail with troubleshooting solutions provided for common problems. There are sample work schedules and cavalletti patterns for most objectives. This is a true working book that will be valuable to all levels of rider.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome training aid.......2002-04-25

This book helped me immensely with training my 3 year-old standardbred and 4 year-old thoroughbred. I would recommend this book to anyone who is training their horse(s) on their own. It gives great detail in instruction and the lessons explained really do work on young and older horses.

Book Description

Hapgood's tour de force is back in print! This riveting account of how Earth's poles have flipped positions many times is the culmination of Hapgood's extensive research of Antarctica, ancient maps and the geological record. This amazing book discusses the various pole shifts in Earth's history-occurring when Earth's crust slips in the inner core-and gives evidence for each one. It also predicts future pole shifts: a planetary alignment will cause the next one on May 5, 2000! Packed with illustrations, this book is the reference other books on the subject cite over and over again. With millennium madness in full swing, this is just the book to generate even more excitement at the unknown possibilities.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's a must read..........2007-08-17

This book is great, it' a must read for everybody who is interested in cycles of glacialization (ice ages). Prof. Hapgood logically builds his case, first he gives information about the modern geology, plate tectonics and climate science, then he follows with the apparent anomalies of the ice age theories and climate change. (you can check the facts: mammoths lived in Alaska, when parts of North America was covered by 3 km thick ice sheet. Mammoths also lived in islands of the artic see, which are nearly uninhabited today. Mammoths can not live in a tundra it needs so called mammoth steppe... Etc.)
Then he delivers his theary: Polar shift. This means that the whole crust of the earth shifts. If you think it is a science-fiction, check TPW (true-polar-wander, it is measured by many scientist today. Only the speed of the shifts are assumed different from Hapgood proposal.)
I am not a true believer, but there's something strange with the ice ages, and Hapgood gives an answer. If you are open minded to new ideas, buy this book, it's not new (a few decades old), but it is full of interesting ideas, full of references and full of science (don't be afraid, the book is readable without having a Ph.D. in geology).
Prof . Hapgood has an other book about this topic "Earth shifting Crust", but it is rarely available, and very expensive, so dear publishers it is time for a new edition!!!

5 out of 5 stars mind boggling.......2007-06-18

Hapgood writes clear and understandeble about the fantastic history of earth. Theories so scaring and fantastic that they are hardly credible. His arguments are so well documented that this book made me change my understanding of the making of our prersent world.

5 out of 5 stars Path of the Pole.......2007-05-13

This is a very thorough book about the current theory of how pole shifts happen. Hapgood is the formost expert on the theory of having the Earth crust shift instead of the poles moving. It throws new light on the ice age theorys as there has been no accepted explanation for them to date. This is a good read and adds another peice to the puzzle of periodic catastrophy the Earth goes through due to presence of Planet X every 3600 years. A must read.

5 out of 5 stars Cataclysmic Pole Shift Geology and the fall of civilization.......2005-02-11

A five star book! Enjoyable and a great read. I really recommend this book to anyone interested in our past, geology, ancient civilizations and even dinosaurs. It has it all. Explore the mysteries of our past. There isn't a dull portion in the book in the least. It is well researched and well written. I enjoyed this book and consider it a classic. I highly recommend this book to everyone. It is just that good!

3 out of 5 stars Count me as a skeptic.......2004-01-23

In so titling this review, I do not intend to cast aspersions on the author's indefatigable industry and considerable scholarship. He marshalled an impressive array of data and sought sensible conclusions from it, based on the state of scientific knowledge at the time. This was in the finest period of scientific inquiry. However, subsequent discoveries have vitiated many of Hapgood's premises and his ultimate conclusion of geologically sudden wandering of the poles is supported by neither earth science, physics, nor Quaternary paleontology.

It must be remembered that Hapgood wrote this book before the advent of plate tectonics, and while continental drift was rejected by all but a few scientists. Admittedly, an analysis of magnetic lines of force in ancient igneous deposits would supprt his conclusion of wandering poles, IF there was no such thing as moving continents. But there is.

Likewise, with reference to sudden large animal extinctions at the end of the Pleistocene Epoch, research now shows that prehistoric hunting techniques were far more advanced than previously thought, and that extinction of many of the large creatures then living was due to man-created overkill, something that is going on even today. As to climate peculiarities such as an open Arctic Ocean at the height of the Ice Age advances, research has disclosed that such is to be expected in the event of North American glaciation.

Author Hapgood, and his devotees, therefore, find themselves in a position better than the Velikovskyites, but in one which, like theirs, has been obviated by the discovery of facts and scientific principles which were not available to Hapgood when he wrote this book. Therefore, although the book is highly interesting, and even persuasive in the face of a lack of advanced study of Earth sciences, I do not find its conclusions credible in this day and and age. It is a pity that Hapgood is not with us now, for his inquisitive mind and obvious genius and industry would benefit us greatly.

My lukewarm recommendation of this interesting book is based on the foregoing. It is a good primer on how science develops, but not an accurate guidebook to the past in terms of conlusions.

There are nice photos in this book. I wasn't crazy about the way the book was organized. It is broken up in little chucks of imformation. It just wasn't easy to get through.

I think it's a very good option if you are interested in totem poles. This book tells you about the history of totems, ceremonies, how to make your own totem pole and also the quality of the pictures are very, very good too. Definitely an excelent choice for totem-lovers just like me...

5 out of 5 stars A real superguide.......2006-11-23

An Altitude SuperGuide: Totem Poles by Pat Kramer is the perfect guide for anybody wanting to know more about Totem Poles or anybody who wishes to visit the Pacific coast. The book is broken into four parts. The first chapter deals with the origins and history of Totem Poles. The second deals with symbols and ceremonies. The third part deals with identifying the Totem figures from Bear to Wolf. The last chapter deals with where you can find authentic, well-designed, totem poles and totem pole collections. I got the book from a store when visiting Stanley Park in Vancouver and used it while visiting Ketchican, Juneau and Sitka Alaska. It really does help understand the importance and beauty of the Totem Pole to Native culture and to Alaska's history.
