4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2007-10-15

I think that this book is very helpful with the GMAT preparation. If what you really need is a reminder of the mathematical and verbal concepts needed (which you studied in high school), and ofcourse, the type of questions you can expect on the GMAT, then this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2007-10-08

a little tougher than the actual test, my exercise is much lower than my real score, good for your brain and mind expedition....

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Advanced GMAT Preparation material........2007-09-24

If you want a serious preparation, this book is the best in the market. I suggest you buy the Kaplan premier program first, do the practice tests and then feel the need for some advanced material and then look out for this one.

The key is, after going through the initial preparation material say, Kaplan's Premier program for around 2/3 weeks, you will feel that something more is required to take you towards the advanced stage that can give you a boost, an edge, some extra climb in the GMAT score. Then comes this book. It requires 2 weeks of rigorous preparation time. The verbal section of this book (more so for Critical Reasoning and Sentence Correction) is simply superb.

However, do not forget that the last 2 weeks of your preparation should be solely focussed with the OG and other OG supplements (e.g. Verbal OG etc).

If I would not have had this book, my score would have been 20-40 points lower than my actual 700.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic practice and tips.......2007-08-26

I first bought the regular Kaplan GMAT 2007 study guide and it helped me get a general overview of the GMAT questions, format, and some basic practice. But I found that it lacked the most difficult questions (especially in the Quantitative section), and although I got 96% of those right on the practice exams they were far easier than the ones I faced on the real GMAT. So I ended up with a 630 (78th percentile) and was disappointed. I then went out and bought this GMAT 800 book for more practice and "the toughest questions," and found it really very useful. It does away with the lengthy text about strategies and gets down to the questions themselves, focusing on different types of tricky questions that the GMAT test makers love to pose. I suppose it worked, since I just took the GMAT again (about 6 weeks later, having only used this book to study for about a week) and scored 750 (98th percentile)!! I highly recommend this, although you need to at least skim through the other one (or a similar guide) first to get the hang of the GMAT format and different question types before using this book.

5 out of 5 stars Useful supplement to official GMAT guides.......2007-08-11

Now that the GMAT has issued a revised 11th edition of the Official Guide for GMAT Review, plus new supplementary official guides for both the verbal and quantitative sections of the test, the case for spending additional hard-earned money and scarce study time on the Kaplan review prep book is not as strong as it used to be. On the other hand, a case can be made. While the questions in the official GMAT books have the advantage of being actual test questions rather than Kaplan attempts to emulate the well vetted questions written by ETS (and recently Pearson Vue), most of the official guides' questions have already appeared in the 10th edition of the official GMAT guide, which means that if you have the previous edition, you won't get much additional questions by buying the newer official GMAT books. Although the new GMAT books offer what the publisher calls "improved" explanations, many of the explanations for the reading passages and analytic reasoning sections are still useless and circular -- like answer D is correct because answer D is, uhm, correct. (I find the math explanations to be adequate, however.) In addition, because the computer administered test is adaptive, offering harder questions as you continue to get right answers, the Official Guide GMAT book questions won't be representative of the actual mix you will get when you actually take the test, particularly if you are likely to be a high scorer, in which case the hardest 20% in the GMAT book will be more likely to represent the actual questions you will be answering.

Kaplan, on the other hand, makes more of an attempt to offer insightful explanations to test questions, even if their answers are at times deficient. Kaplan also offers advice on test strategy with regard to timing, using process of elimination, and ways of coping with particularly difficult questions or reading passages, which GMAT seems to be reluctant to do. In other words, the Kaplan approach is more like true coaching, as opposed to offering just a bunch of practice test questions. In summary, I would say that this is a useful addition to the preparation arsenal, although the main focus should still be on the official GMAT preparation materials.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite GMAT book.......2007-04-11

I love this book, very transparent and organized by topic sections. First, you have to answer three to four questions, and the solution with detailed explanation is just two pages ahead. I really like it, it's a lot easier to begin to study with, than for example official guide or Princeton review which I consider more as a drill where questions are not as neatly organized as here(it's more test like)...Hope this helps!

4 out of 5 stars good material.......2007-03-20

if you haven't started studying for the gmat this book isn't for you. you should start w/the kaplan 2007 gmat book then move to this after you're done with that. the explanations are pretty good in this book. my only gripe is that some of the same exact questions that appear in their course book for the class ( i actually took a class) so i was doing the ssame questions twice. i don't mind the review but now i'm wondering where i can get some difficult questions that i haven't had exposure to. i'm going to move onto the official guide gmat book next.

3 out of 5 stars Just to Practice .......2006-11-09

I used this book to practice some more to the GMAT test. My especific problems for the GMAT test lies on the reading, vocabulary and structure of it, on spot that english is not my first language. The book improve my skills on it, and seems to satisfy the objectives above. I agree that the title is too optimist for the book (GMAT 800), but think of it as a complementary self-study course. To use the official guide is a must.

5 out of 5 stars Superb!.......2006-11-08

Do not take the GMAT without reading this book, i.e if u want an 800 score

1 out of 5 stars Kaplan is Horrible!.......2006-09-16

I got the book. Signed up for the website. Then didn't have time to study for a while because of work. When I finally had time to use the book and study, my internet access (where a lot of important suppliments are) was cut off because it was passed the assumed amount of time. I tried getting it restored, but Kaplan was no help.
1st-They kept connecting me to the wrong departments who were too busy to talk, so took messages and never returned your calls.
2nd-Didn't respond to emails
3rd-After 4 days of trying to get in contact with the right department, I found out at Friday at 6pm that the people who could help me are closed from 5pm and the whole weekend. So now I have to lose another 3 days. This is very frustrating for someone who has to work and is limited with time. The phone opperator said this is a common problem but Kaplan does not care to spend the money to have employees over the weekend.

DO NOT USE THIS BOOK, THE SERVICE THAT COMES WITH IT IS TERRIBLE!

5 out of 5 stars Very useful for practitioners.......2004-03-18

The Herbal Vade Mecum is a very good materia medica for the practising herbalist. Uses are given, dosages aren't, so you need to know your plants before you use this book.
Beginners might not do all that much with it, except for the teensy little fact that they'd get solid practical sensible cautions for the listed plants instead of the usual overly theoretical overcautious ones.
Were I a beginner, I'd buy it for that alone. No pictures, but then there are lots of picture books out there.

5 out of 5 stars A Library Necessity..........2004-03-10

This highly informative, attractively priced reference packs tons of information in a well-written, accurately designed collection of herbal information book. Reccommended for botanists, pharmocognicists and horticulturists (to mention a few), this book rivals industry 'greats' such as 'Tropica' and 'Exotica' (which run hundreds of dollars) AND has a much more digestible price. The design of the book makes it easy to use at your desktop or in the field. Bravo Mr. Skenderi! Someone finally got it right!

5 out of 5 stars Editor, Medical Herbalism journal.......2003-12-05

An excellent quick reference for the professional herbalist. It is in the same niche as other quick reference books such as Potter's Encylcopedia or Lust's Herb book, but far superior to either, because 1) it has many more herbs 2) it has up-to-date and accurate details on plant chemistry 3) the author has mined the wealth of herbal literature in German, Italian, and French 4) it contains reasoned judgements on safety considerations lacking in the other books in its class, and 5) it accurately describes the most important actions and most important uses, in a well thought-out section, instead of giving long lists of theoretical or minor actions. I'll be using this as a textbook for my intermediate-level students at the North American Institute of Medical Herbalism. --- Paul Bergner, Editor, Medical Herbalism journal

I am learning a lot of things from this new book of mine... I find it really interesting... I took it on my job, and my co-workers find it very interesting too... I do hope my review is good enough, for your business.
I am enjoying my book, thanks! I look forward to doing more business with you in the future!

I have bartended off and on for over 37 years and this is the only book you will ever need. Buy it. Read it. Commit it to memory and watch the tips double, triple, or even more depending on your basic personality and present expertise in the profession.

A lot of useful information! Highly recommended for new and experienced bartenders.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2007-05-13

I applogize for using the word "awesome" to describe this book but that's all that comes to mind. I've worked in the club and club/resturant area a bit but never as bartender. This book brought back memories of the most fun I had, making the least money ever. If you're interested in being a bartender, being a better mixologist or just curious about mixing drinks, I highly recommend this book. It was the best $12.95 I ever spent. And again, Amazon, your service was amazing.

Book Description

On a Long Island beach at dusk, Bob Mitchell and Janet Whitney conduct their illicit love affair in front of a video camera, set to record each steamy moment. Suddenly a terrible explosion lights up the sky. Grabbing the camera, the couple flees as approaching police cars speed toward the scene. Five years later, the crash of Flight 800 has been attributed to a mechanical mal-function. But for John Corey and Kate Mayfield, both members of the Elite Anti-terrorist Task Force, the case is not closed. Suspecting a cover-up at the highest levels and disobeying orders, they set out to find the one piece of evidence that will prove the truth about what really happened to Flight 800-the videotape that shows a couple making love on the beach and the last moments of the doomed airliner.

Amazon.com

John Corey, former NYPD homicide detective, assigned to the Federal Anti-Terrorist Task Force in the pre-millennium 90's, makes a return appearance in a thoughtful novel offering an alternative to the government's "official" position on what really happened to TWA Flight 800, which crashed off the Long Island coast in the summer of 1996. Accompanying his wife Kate to a memorial marking the five-year anniversary of the crash, Corey's curiosity is aroused by what appears to be a concerted effort by Kate's fellow federal agents to keep him--and her--from investigating a case that appears to be closed. Corey's detecting skills lead him to two witnesses to the crash, who were enjoying an adulterous interlude on the beach at the time the plane went down--and videotaping their sexual escapades while what appears to be a terrorist missile attack takes place in the background. What ratchets up the tension in this capably written thriller is what the reader knows but Corey doesn't as he heads for a showdown with those responsible for the official cover-up as the clock ticks down to the morning of September 11, 2001. DeMille's deft touch with a riddle wrapped in an enigma--what really happened to Flight 800--makes his "what if" scenario a more than plausible theory; you don't have to believe in conspiracies or government cover-ups to find his latest engrossing, entertaining, and enlightening. --Jane Adams

Nelson DeMille on Night Fall: An Exclusive Essay

It was a true story, the explosion of TWA Flight 800 off the coast of Long Island in 1996, that inspired Nelson DeMille to write the fictional Night Fall. Read this Amazon.com exclusive essay for insight into the coincidences that made this tragedy a subject DeMille couldn't ignore.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superior.......2007-10-18

Using the real life crash of TWA flight 800 off the coast of Long Island in 1996 as the backbone of his story, Nelson's Demille's Night Fall is a blend of fiction, conspiracy theory and supposition wrapped up into a very compelling read. Although I could see the ending coming a mile away, crisply written characters and real world wit kept me turning pages impatiently. This was my first venture into the realm of Mr. Demille. I will certainly be back for another dose.

1 out of 5 stars Most Disappointing.......2007-09-30

Wow ! I've read a lot of fiction. This book was a total waste of time. The book is about 650 pages (he could have pared it down to 300 w/o wasting any meaning whatsoever. After reading for an eternity, the plot was so disappointing I was annoyed at myself for wasting my time. I was waiting for resolution between the characters, for all to be revealed and justice done.... instead it felt like the author just gotlazy at the end and killed off everyone in one felt swoop. Shame on you.

5 out of 5 stars Suspenseful, worth the read!.......2007-09-20

This is my first DeMille, and it won't be the last. It really made me stop and question the account of what happened to TWA 800. Too many people saw SOMETHING, and the answers weren't exactly enlightening. I wish we could've known the motives of the "bad" guys, and although I knew we were leading up to Sept. 11, the actual ending SHOCKED me - never saw it coming. Some reviewers have criticized what they thought was his confusing Sept. with November because he mentions elections, but he said it was primaries, not a general election. All in all, a GREAT read!

5 out of 5 stars John Corey Great Character.......2007-09-15

Nelson DeMille's writing style is great. I have read 2 books, this and Wild Fire with John Corey as lead character! This book was fair and balanced about the Flight 800 tragedy. I too believe it was a missle shot from the GROUND up and the possibility was very realistic to me even after all these years. The character, Nash and his disappering act makes sense to me also. I'm a avid Mysery reader and while this book could use more suspense, it really kept my attention all the way through as did 'Wild Fire'. My hope is that DeMille will write more books with the lead character, John Corey and his wife!

5 out of 5 stars Night Fall.......2007-09-05

This was absolutely spellbinding. It held my attention through the whole book. The characters were charismatic and interesting.

5 out of 5 stars A great ending to a wonderful series...........2007-10-16

I was so glad when i found out that Sanctuary wasnt the last book. It wasn't bad but this was better. I loved the beginning, it kept you informed about everything that had happened, so you wouldn't be asking yourself later, huh?. I reread this book after i finished it the first time, just cause i couldn't get enough of it.In this book Rob and Jess are not together anymore. She lives in New York with Ruth and goes to Julliards. She doesnt have her powers anymore because of having posttraumatic stress syndrome. so when Robs shows up on her doorstep cause he needs her help to find his missing step sister, it gets really interesting..
This was my favorite in the series just cause i love ending. it doesnt let you down.
and because as a character Jess grew so much that it was hard not to love and hate her.

5 out of 5 stars the LAST and the BEST book!.......2007-09-02

This book is simply amazing! I loved it loved it loved it! If you even LIKE Meg Cabot you are going to fall in love with her writing in this one! It is simply amazing and just fantastic! I definitely did not expect it to be this great but it was!! Buy with confidence- you are going to love this book!! This is the sequel to the many 1-800-Where-R-You books! I've read it five times!! It is the last book!

5 out of 5 stars Missing You.......2007-06-20

As is tradition for these books, I finished this one in less than a day. And it is probably the best one in the series. Jess is 19 now, and I can definitely tell she's grown up. She handles the problems better, and the ending is one of the bests. I couldn't think of a better way to end this series. :P

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Ending .......2007-05-20

This series is one of my all-time favorite Meg Cabots. I've learned to grow to love all the characters in this story- Jess, Rob, Ruth, Doug, her entire family... You can't help but like them and admire them for everything they've gone through. Plus, Rob and Jess are just great together.

And I know there was a huge gap between the fourth one and this finale, but I have to say, this series ender was better than anything I could have imagined. It was funny and über romantic. I found myself laughing, getting butterflies, even shedding a tear or two... all the good stuff that you could possibly ask for. It was highly satisfying, and at a different pace from the previous books. More mature somehow.

Apparently, Jess has apparently taken a few years off to work as a field agent of sorts, finding missing people amidst war in the Middle East. That is, until the trauma from the violence she was witness to caused her to lose her powers and subsequently attempt to lead a normal life as a college freshman. But then Rob turns up at her doorstep, the ex-love-of-her-life asking for her help.

It was gut-wrenching to see Jess messed up and not herself, and slowly finding her way back. Not to mention, you empathize with a lot of the decisions and doubts she has, which culminates in a highly satisfying and thoroughly enjoyable book worthy of a series finale. No regrets, it's been a great ride with 1-800-Where-R-You. :)

4 out of 5 stars A Tidy Wrap-Up.......2007-05-16

I kind of thought that the ending for 1-800-Where-R-U #4 was all we were going to get for this series, but I was pleasantly surprised by the final book. The hiatus of the series corresponded well with the hiatus in Jess's life - she went off to help find people in Iraq, to New York City, to Julliard. A lot's been going on her life and there've been some changes. The Jess we know is still there, but grown up a bit, and she's been seriously affected by the events in the last couple of years. I don't know how closely her experiences and reactions parallel those of soldiers in Iraq, but I like that the war influenced the direction of this book. The characters are all still solid and entertaining, but a little more mature. Jess's new problem-solving style left me grinning and Rob is still a great counterpart to Jess, with hinted at depths yet still so very much a guy. I also liked Jess's resolutions of issues with her mom and the friendly sort of relationship Jess seems to have developed with Dr. Krantz.

Book Description

The great Villa constructed by the Emperor Hadrian near Tivoli between A.D. 118 and the 130s is one of the most original monuments in the history of architecture and art. In this beautiful book, two distinguished architectural historians describe and interpret the Villa as it existed in Roman times and track its extraordinary effect on architects and artists up to the present day.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars About timeless beauty.......2004-03-03

First of all, it is a beautiful book. For anyone who already has visited the Villa, just the cover is truly moving, with the line of trees next the palestra, as moving is the Piranesi graffiti photo. The reader must also understand the book is about a ruin and accept some degree of frustration with descriptions and the current outlook of monuments, but MacDonald and Pinto are very sucessful in freeing our imagination to wander among the profound design and intentions of Hadria's Villa. A collection of monuments that is too the empire, the memories of a life and a message to the future. Even the authors seemed amazed, for instance, by the Maritime Theater plan or the use of landscape. It is a book to be read again and again.

5 out of 5 stars The ancient Romans created a provocative architecture........1998-02-16

MacDonald/Pinto assert that Hadrian forged a new and innovative architectural system which integrated buildings with nature and human use. Hadrian's goal was to create an arrangement of buildings which were functional and yet challenged the intellect to contemplate the unseen world. They also make a very strong case for the pervasive influence which this complex villa has had on archtecture from ancient times to the present. This book makes one realize that Roman architecture is indeed relevant to the present.

    Book Description

The influence of Greek medical practices dating back to the fifth century B.C. has had an immeasurable impact on the development of medicine in the West over the subsequent centuries. This text is designed to cover the history of Western medicine from Classical Antiquity to 1800. As one guiding thread it takes the system of medical ideas that, in large part, went back to the Greeks of the fifth century B.C., and played a major role in the understanding and treatment of health and disease. The influence of Greek medicine spread from the Aegean basin to the rest of the Mediterranean region, to Europe, and then to European settlements overseas. By the nineteenth century, however, this tradition no longer carried the same force or occupied so central a position within medicine. This book charts the influence of this tradition through twenty centuries, examining it in its social and historical context. It is essential reading as a new synthesis for all students of the history of medicine.

    Book Description

During his 800 days of war, Nikolai Litvin fought at the front lines in the ferocious tank battles at Kursk, was wounded three times, and witnessed unspeakable brutalities against prisoners and civilians. But he survived to pen this brief but powerful memoir of his wartime experiences.

Barely out of his teens, Litvin served for three years in the Red Army on the killing fields of the Eastern Front. His memoir presents an unadorned, candid narrative of the common soldier's lot in Stalin's army. Unlike the memoirs of Russian officers-usually preoccupied with large military operations and political concerns-this narrative offers a true ground-level view of World War II's deadliest theater. It puts a begrimed human face on the enormous toll of casualties and provides a rare perspective on battles that were instrumental in the defeat of the German army.

Litvin's varied roles, ranging from antitank gunner at Kursk to heavy machine gunner in a penal battalion to staff driver for the 352nd Rifle Division, offer unique per-spectives on the Red Army in World War II as it fought from the Ukraine deep into the German heartland. Litvin documents such significant battles as Operation Kutuzov, Operation Bagration, and the German counterattack on the Narev, while also providing unique personal observations on fording the Dnepr River under enemy fire, the rape of German women by Russian troops, and literally seeing his life pass before his eyes as he watched a Stuka's bomb fall directly on his position.

Originally written in 1962, with events still fresh in his mind, Litvin's memoir lay unpublished and unseen until translator Stuart Britton and a Russian colleague approached him about publishing it in English. Britton interviewed Litvin to flesh out the details of his original recollection and annotated the resulting work to provide historical context for the campaigns and battles in which he participated. Remarkably free of Soviet-era propaganda, this gem of a memoir provides a view of the war never seen by western readers, including photographs from Litvin's personal collection.

An invaluable historical document, as well as a remarkable testament of survival, Litvin's memoir offers unique and penetrating insights into the Soviet wartime experience unavailable in any other source.

This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.

4 out of 5 stars It is What it is.......2007-07-10

Although the negative reviewers might of had valid points, I am not sure the critism is really relevant. I knew two WWII veterans very well, one of whom wrote a brief memoir. Using them as a reference, I do not believe the author was trying to create an exciting, flowing, historically, geographically precise docudrama (if it was I would be very suspect of the motivations and validity of the document and would not have found it near as valuable). I am not sure the author was even trying to educate us although I certainly was. I believe the author was trying to set down in print a brief personal history of WWII obviously, largely from his point of view. What was added by the tranlator was an aid which allowed us to go back in time and perspective without disturbing the author's account. What the author (and the other veterans I know) think is important based on his experiences obviously doesn't always match readers expectations. With this in mind and in response to specific criticism, I found the author's references to various vehicles he encountered interesting and important. Maybe not exciting but, again, that wasn't the point. I thought the historical and geographical descriptions to be adequate in and of themselves. The author's accounts and stories flowed well enough with help from the translator's added descriptions and foot notes.

I bought the book based on a recent description in the WSJ. I had read a book some time ago called "The Diary of a Napoleonic Foot Soldier." I thought it would be interesting to compare what sounded like a similar story told by two men of similar rank who fought wars in the same basic geographic area a century apart. The similarities were remarkable and reading both books contributed much to my persective of war and this region. Beyond the obvious basics of survival, what was important to these two men is very much the same. And I think what was important to these two men from their personal perspective in these two "histories" is what the authors and their "helpers" were trying to convey. Both documents succeeded in this respect and did so well enough to, dare I say it, be entertaining. I would give "The Diary of a Napoleonic Foot Soldier" 5 stars however. I thought it was a better read. If you must be constantly thrilled and excited by a book to enjoy or be informed by it, subtract one star from each rating. And if you are looking for graphic descriptions of blood, sex and gore, don't bother with either of these reads. A rating of two stars however misses both the point and the mark in my opinion. And thus ends my critique of the critics.

    2 out of 5 stars Patchy.......2007-05-31

The author tries to present a coherent depiction of activities - but the result is difficult to follow and requires additional materiel to track the flow of battle.

    2 out of 5 stars disappointing narrative.......2007-05-09

I purchased and read this book because it was mentioned in the May, 2007, Atlantic as a "harrowing grunt's-eye view of the war" on the Eastern Front. Litvin's war seemed to consist mainly of his jeep and his book neither informed nor harrowed me. Anyone interested in a much deeper, complete, and moving description of experience in that war should read "The Forgotten Soldier" by Guy Sajer instead.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Memoir.......2007-04-17

Definitely one of the more interesting memoirs from the Eastern Front of WWII. While there isn't as much information in terms of actual combat, at least not as much as I would have liked to read, I was quite impressed with the other stories that the author was able to talk about.

The entire book is quite short, 143 pages, and took me two days of casual reading to finish. The translator helps along in the translation by explaining Russian phrases and words which those not familiar with Russian would be a bit lost without but he also helps the narrative by giving context to the authors stories.

The author definitely had an interesting 'career' throughout the Second World War on the Eastern Front. He was involved in the fighting at Kursk, where he was wounded, as well as operation Bagration, and many other battles with the 354th Rifle Division, and an airborne guards division before that. The 354th belonged to Rokossovsky's front and the 65th Army under Batov, which was involved in many battles throughout the last year of the war.

Some of the more interesting stories were about how the author was sent to a penal company, he left his post without a written order. He was sentenced to three months and served at least one, hard to tell the exact date he was assigned to it. What was interesting about this account was that he explained penal units after a battle would receive a few days of rest, which the regular army units did not even receive. Although penal formations were sent to some of the most dangerous sectors they were treated like a regular unit and supplied like one as well, no one rifle for two men here. Eventually he was discharged on account of his actions in battle and sent to a regular unit.

Another incident had two scouts being accused of rape. They had confessed and the woman who complained about the fact that they raped her daughter and daughter-in-law was shocked to hear that their punishment would be execution. Instead she asked if there was any other way they could amend for their crimes. The only other alternative had the two scouts marry the women they raped. The daughter-in-law already had a husband and so she simply forgave her attacker, while the daughter agreed to the marriage. An interesting story, to say the least!

Other recollections include the author, while being in a penal company, running into two soldiers from the 'blocking detachment' which had to watch out for soldiers retreating without orders. When asked what he was doing, as he was retreating, he was able to convince them that without ammunition for his machine gun there was nothing more he could do, especially since the rest of his crew had already left for the rear. They let him go on his way, it was the first and last encounter he had with any soldiers from a blocking detachment.

The author candidly talks about German POWs and what happened to a few of them when they were captured. Six of them he helped execute with a friend, although as soon as he pulled the trigger he fainted, so how many he killed, if any, will never be known. Another POW proved to have been a Russian who joined the Germans years ago, he was executed. Still another German soldier was witnessed killing an old man, he was given to the local population to do with as they please.

Overall an interesting account of the Eastern Front with many stories you just won't find in a general history of the war between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Well worth the money and I'm glad that more and more memoirs are coming out from Soviet veterans, it is about time they had a chance to tell their stories!

    Book Description

September 11, 2001, did not represent the first aerial assault against the American mainland. The first came on July 17,1996, with the downing of TWA Flight 800. This book looks in detail at what people saw and heard on this fateful night.

First Strike explains how a determined corps of ordinary citizens worked to reveal the compromise and corruption that tainted the federal investigation. With an impressive array of facts, Jack Cashill and James Sanders show the relationship between events in July 1996 and September 2001 and proclaim how and why the American government has attempted to cover up the truth.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars plausibility.......2007-01-29

sanders and cashill present a quite plausible hypothesis to the downing of twa 800. this book is an easy read and pulls in the reader. the text builds up to the conclusion / hypothesis presented in the final pages. the fact that the military had so many resources within a few miles of the incident at that moment is unusual; but, given the, then, recent bombings, international threats, and the new york based court hearing of the wtc bombing #1 leader, the elevation of the nation's security risk to the highest it had been since the cuban missile crisis made sense. the brisk departure from the area by the navy would make sense given the downing, regardless of whether a missile had been fired or not. if, indeed, there was an unidentified boat, it, more likely than a u.s. navy resource, would, without constitutional restriction, have fired a missile within our airspace and, perhaps accidentally, brought down twa 800. this hypothesized scenario re-plays itself, in a fashion, on 9/11/01 with regard to who has the authority to fire at a civilian aircraft during a terrorist attack? the authors' question about why boeing and twa might accept responsibility should have been followed up with actual information on subsequent liabilities and offsetting government contracts. i wonder to what degree the nation's dependence on oil, both political parties' appreciation for / benefit from middle-eastern campaign contributions and favors, the 1996 election, and the White House's "explore and discuss" approach all may have contributed to the subjective need to develop a plausible cover / smokescreen in this case and not overtly recognize the situation or deal head on with the underlying political, economic, and military issues. if our military and intelligence agencies might have had knowledge of a terrorist in a small plane, it would have been nice if the investigative journalists who wrote this book would have followed up on those possible leads - who? where from? why? the credibility of international acceptance of blame from terrorist networks ... sanders, understandably, wrote with great passion about his trial for conspiracy to obtain materials from an accident scene ... i didn't see what happened in the end, but, i surmise, he survived if he is writing this book ... were the u.s. attorneys who prosecuted sanders ever "rewarded"? briefly, how did this event relate to the other events occurring internationally? while, frankly, this was an interesting conspiracy theory book, it identified interesting flaws in the official stories and it proposed an intriguing explanation for what may have happened to twa 800, few new facts were presented that haven't been discussed already on the internet. for those readers interested in conspiracy theories, this is a very good book.

5 out of 5 stars First Strike: TWA Flight 800 and the Attack on America.......2007-01-13

This is a very intriguing book. It is a book that is very hard to put down. I read it in two settings, albeit, almost two months ago.

If the events described in this book really took place, and they seem to be very well documented, and the theory presented here is correct, then shame on the NTSB for falsifying it's reports, shame on the airline industry for not speaking up, shame on Boeing for accepting the blame (and probably the liability) for the tragedy; shame, shame, shame, on the Clinton administration for yet another lie and cover-up, shame on the Navy for their sloppy interdiction, and shame on the media for their crappy investigative reporting.

Having handled a lot of JP-4 jet fuel in the military, and because and because I know commercial jet fuel, known as Jet-A, is pure kerosene and has a flashpoint of 120 degrees F, plus the fact that Boeing never made any meaningful modifications to it's 747 aircraft as a result of the crash of Flight 800, I never did buy the spark induced exploding middle fuel tank explanation for the cause of the crash. But, the idea that our very own United States Navy took this plane down, while unsuccessfully trying to defend it from a terrorist attack, never occurred to me at the time, much less was it mentioned by the liberal media who hung on every word from the corrupt; "I did not have sex with that woman", Clinton administration.

This book brings into question, the need for investigations by the NTSB; the public would be better served by a private agency (without political baggage) investigating aviation accidents and providing objective non-bias reports. It also brings into question, once again, the integrity of all of our political military and industrial leaders, many of whom profess to have the best interests of America at heart. Lastly, after reading this book one must wonder who is in charge in matters involving national security such as we have here, the military, the FBI, CIA, the white house? Who decides who is in charge, and which of these agencies can bungle things the worst?

This is a good book for conspiracy theorists as well as those who have faith in and trust our leaders. It's a grippingly interesting and recommended read.

    4 out of 5 stars Yes, but..........2006-05-26

This book takes you through the whodunit, gathering evidence, etc. and arriving at a plausible explanation at the end. The other major story here is the coverup. The Navy, the NTSB, the FBI, the CIA all were involved in the coverup, so the order had to come from the White House. No one else had the authority to order all those different branches of government.

The question is one of motive. If it was terrorists, their real objective was undoubtedly economic. Who cares about one commercial airplane? But with airports all over the nation, if any flight was vulnerable to the kinds of missles used against Russian helicopters in Afghanistan, no flight would be safe. If it had gotten out that TWA 800 was brought down by a terrorist missle, there would have been an immediate catastrophic drop in airline passengers. This would have been an economic disaster for the airline industry and for the USA.

A responsible press would not have allowed itself to be coopted into such a terrorist scheme, and the government would have tried to thwart it. Hence, the news blackout and the cover-up. This is the most parsimonious explanation for the coverup. There is no need to posit evil Presidents or a corrupt press. Of course, there was a little more to it than that.

However, indicting James Sanders AND HIS WIFE! (who had nothing to do with the investigation) is another matter. Sanders was only doing his job as an investigative reporter. What is worse is that the jury found them both guilty! In that chapter, Sanders presents all the evidence and testimony presented by both prosecutor and defense, so you can judge for yourself. That twelve jurors found them guilty in this case is shocking (and this can't be blamed on the President).

By the way, the explanations presented in the reviews here are only half-truths. Read the book and you'll know what happened.

5 out of 5 stars THE US NAVY DID IT .......2006-03-13

THE UNITED STATES NAVY DID IN FACT SHOOT DOWN TWA FLIGHT 800 BY NAVY SHIP AND FIRED 2 MISSILES AND THEN FLEED THE SCENE AT 30 KNOTS AND RADAR CAPTURED IT AND THAT SHIP WAS NEVER FOUND AND WHEN PIERRE SALINGER CAME FORWARD HE HAD INFO FROM A FATHER WHO HAD A SON IN THE NAVY HE SAID TO THIS FATHER WE SHOT IT DOWN MEANING ABOUT TWA FLIGHT 800 CRASH...

5 out of 5 stars Another JFK type Cover-up?.......2005-12-01

As a person that worked as a mechanic for TWA for almost 35 years, I can say that the US Government's explanation of the cause for TWA 800 to fall from the sky is highly suspect. I worked on the aircraft in question; 17119, 100's of times and many times on the systems that the government claims to have malfunctioned. It did not happen the way the government claims.

How it did happen is spread before you like a fictional mystery novel by the author in "First Strike". It is tragic that it is not fiction, because once again, our elected government has seen fit to lie to the electorate.

If the truth had been released about TWA 800, maybe 911 could have been averted. We will never know. I do know some things: More than a hundred people saw the missiles headed for TWA 800 and airplanes do not gain altitude after being blown up. The government's case relies on saying that all those people had simultaneous illusions of rising streaks of light and then asks you to suspend physics in order to make their case plausible.

The authors of "First Strike" tell you what really happened.
