1 out of 5 stars New Book that was NOT a new Book.......2007-06-08

Simply put - I purchased this Astronomy book through Amazon because the price was the same as elsewhere but I would save on shipping. I expected a NEW book but received a Used Book in good condition.
The Book itself so far seems well laid out and interesting but the course I am taking has just reached the 1/3 mark toward completion.

5 out of 5 stars For the Non-Science Major.......2007-03-08

This book is designed to be the astronomy book that non-science majors would use to meet their one-year of science requirement as part of their undergraduate degree. As such it is written without the mathematics content that would be normal in a course aimed at astronoly or physics students. In addition, this particular book has several advantages. To identify just a few:

1. Throughout the book there is an emphasis on teaching the scientific method. This area has been strengthened in this edition because (I'm guessing) the current attempts by the un-intelligent design people to disparage scientific theories.

2. Revised to include the latest discoveries being made by the Mars rovers and the down grading of poor Pluto to a minor planet.

3. Updating the current theories regarding dark matter and dark energy.

In summary this is a well written, well illustrated text, ideally suited for the non-scientists.

5 out of 5 stars Astronomy Today 5th edition.......2006-03-11

I have had a lifetime love of Astronomy but have lacked the mathmatical background for a thorough understanding. Most popular books on the subject rarely cover the field in the manner that I desire. Astronomy Today is a textbook for a beginning course in astronomy at the college level and does, in fact, cover a great deal of information without the need for mathmatical knowledge. The authors express their ideas and information in clear, concise language and clearly manifest an enthusiasm for their subject. I have enjoyed the book immensely.

4 out of 5 stars A Paradox of Blind Astronomers!.......2005-06-23

This is an excellent textbook, but I deducted one star (from a possible five-star rating) because of the absurd comments made by the authors in the beginning of the book. In this fourth edition of Astronomy Today, a textbook published by Prentice Hall for college students, the authors open the very first chapter with the following statements:

"Of all the scientific insights attained to date, one stands out boldly: Earth is neither central nor special. We inhabit no unique place in the universe. Astronomical research, especially within the past few decades, strongly suggests that we live on what seems to be an ordinary rocky planet called Earth, one of the nine known planets orbiting an average star called the Sun, a star near the edge of a huge collection of stars called the Milky Way Galaxy, which is one galaxy among countless billions of others spread throughout the observable universe."

Huh!? Earth isn't special? Compare the other planets in our Solar System to Earth and tell us it isn't special. And Earth is "...an ordinary rocky planet..."? It's the only planet we know of with vast oceans of liquid water, a breathable atmosphere, lush vegetation, and a spectacular collection of life forms. The authors of this textbook must have been "out to lunch" when they wrote that trite introduction, or... this is just another deliberate attempt by "philosophers of gobbledygook" to strip the Earth of its special place in the universe and to squash any special characteristics that may differentiate it from everything else in the cosmos. I strongly suspect the latter viewpoint is the correct one.

The fact is the Earth is indeed a very special place, and the Sun is a very special star. In fact, the Sun-Earth relationship represents a very special arrangement that permits life to thrive upon our planet. Mercury, Venus and Mars may be nothing more than ordinary rocky planets, but Earth is truly unique from all the other planets in our Solar System, and may be truly unique in all the universe.

I stand by my initial rating of the textbook: 4 stars and an excellent read. I just have a wee bit of a problem with blind astronomers.

5 out of 5 stars A joy to read!.......2005-02-18

This book is really outstanding! It contains 757 pages of text (not counting the preface and appendix), about 480 (mostly quite smallish) photos, some 400 drawings/figures/illustrations and almost 50 tables. The writing style is very clear, not at all dry or overtly technical. It is a joy to read this book. I know of no other book that clarifies all kind of astronomical subjects as thoroughly and understandably as this book (and I did read many books on astronomy.....). Highly recommended!

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Enthusiastically recommended for parents, teachers, and caregivers of young children everywhere........2007-04-14

Kindergarten teacher Jill Frankel Hauser presents Science Play, a compendium of over 65 safe, age-appropriate activities designed to foster creativity and a sense of discovery in children ages 2 to 6. Step-by-step instructions and simple black-and-white illustrations walk readers through activities such as observing earthworms at work, making puddle prints with food coloring, water, and a simple medicine dropper, or gathering and sorting rocks. Young children will most likely need an adult's help with reading the instructions, but the activities themselves are easy to do and highly inexpensive. Enthusiastically recommended for parents, teachers, and caregivers of young children everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars A fun way to introduce science to little kids!.......2006-02-13

It's absolutely perfect for our 3- and 5-year olds! It's a great way to introduce science concepts to them. The experiments are simple to prepare, very interesting and lots of fun. Also, most of the materials are common items used at home. We have done a number of the experiments without spending much money at all. It comes very handy, too, during rainy or snowy days. The activities help keep the kids from getting bored inside the house.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource.......2004-02-08

My kids loved these fun learning activities. Enough to keep them busy through early childhood. Nothing canned here. . . all creative and discovery-focused. Makes biology and even physics accessable to very young children. You can't go wrong with this outstanding guide.

5 out of 5 stars This series is GREAT.......2003-07-31

This is really handy for the budding scientist in your preschooler. Experiements are written so that the early reader can understand and do the experiments on their own (it lets the reader know when a parent needs to help or supervise, such as when scissors are involved) and has question that the parent can use to further expand on projects. Also check this whole series, such as math play, arts and crafts from around the world, rainy day play, weather, shapes, etc. My son loves these activies. Plus for the price, you can't beat it. (...)

3 out of 5 stars Dissatisfied in Annandale.......2003-01-12

This book had some neat ideas and experiments, but not enough explanations for them. I have a very inquisitive 4 year old and this book just didn't satisfy his curiosity or my expectations.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice Guide for Beginners.......2007-06-16

The author writes a nice overview of the entrepreneurial process. It's basically for novices but it does a good job for this audience. The only problem I have with this book is that it is too basic and is therefore non-unique because it is so low-level. Regardless, I must say that for the right audience, it does a fine job over giving the big picture.

If you are advanced or aspire to become advanced, I would recommend "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" but only for high-tech entrepreneurs. Even this author has recommended it.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Entrepreneurs.......2007-05-14

Steven gives great illustrations to drive home his insightful advice for entrepreneurs. As he's "been there, done that," we can take his advice to heart in the hopes of becoming a success like him!

5 out of 5 stars Exellent Book.......2007-05-11

Great book for getting ready to open a new business. Would refer to anyone thinking about opening a business.

5 out of 5 stars Brief and to the point.......2007-04-27

This is a delightful little book that contains a wealth of useful and helpful information and ideas on starting a small business and ensuring that it is viable and succesful. The book is well written and easy to follow and interesting to read.

This is a must read for entrepreneurs, particularly budding ones as the information the book provides is very practical and can help you avoid making costly errors. The book covers a wide range of topics including the start-up process, marketing the business on a small budget, cash-flow forecasting, among other things.

The book is an excellent companion for the entrepreneur that is well worth having.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable advice for the budding entrepreneur.......2007-03-04

This book does a terrific job of presenting some of the most important issues entrepreneurs face when embarking on new ventures, touching on topics such as the business plan, funding, team building, and cash flows. Using simple, yet stunningly accurate models of the entrepreneurial process, Steven Gold distills complex subjects into simple, practical, take-away messages. The classification of entrepreneurial personalities (professionals, pragmatists, and inventors) is something I think we can all relate to. I find the metaphor which compares building a new company to making "stone soup" equally compelling. There are countless books out there for budding entrepreneurs, but this one is no fluff. It gets right down to the nuts and bolts so you can concentrate on your business.

4 out of 5 stars Cute Potty Book for Younger Kids.......2007-09-11

My boys love this book, especially the end where they get to "flush" the potty down and tell it bye-bye. For little Sesame Street fans, this is a good potty training book.

The only thing I don't like is that it switches from toilets to potty seats (Zoey uses the toilet, Big Bird has a potty seat), which I think could be confusing since most kids progress from a potty seat to a toilet. I would still recommend it, though.

2 out of 5 stars I was disappointed.......2007-09-06

I guess based on the other reviews and the price, I expected more. This book seems really short to me. It covers the potty habits of 4 of Grover's Sesame Street friends (some of them like to potty - some aren't ready to potty and that's ok - etc.). It just seemed a little brief to me and didn't have much meat to it. My 2 year old son thought it was ok - but he isn't excited about it the way some of the other reviewers' children seemed to be. And I expected more from the flush the potty feature on the last page. It is a paper lever that is really easy to pull off if you have a child who is less than delicate with books (a board book with a flimsy paper pull tab seems contradictory to me...give me something a little sturdier...). I think the book is over priced for what you get (and if you buy it used, make sure the paper flush handle is intact before you buy - because that's really the only feature that makes this book stand out and it probably won't last multiple children).

4 out of 5 stars Cute book.......2007-06-10

My son loves this book. There is a little flushing potty at the end and he just sits there flushing it over and over. It's not an electric flush it is a little tab that you slide up and down to make the "pee pee go bye bye". I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Potty Sucess.......2007-05-07

Love this book, especially the last page where the child can actually move a lever to "flush the pee in the toilet." My son loves it!

3 out of 5 stars Not so much help.......2007-04-27

My son just loves to hear the story and flush the pee pee but that does not help with the potty training.

3 out of 5 stars Consisting of chapters 24 - 53 of THE EYE OF THE WORLD.......2005-07-04

This volume (which cannot stand on its own as a story) is the second half of THE EYE OF THE WORLD, from "Flight Down the Arinelle" to the final chapter, "The Wheel Turns". The book opens with the same set of quotations as does THE EYE OF THE WORLD proper. The chapters are numbered as for the entire book, beginning with chapter 24, and the head-of-chapter icons were retained. As usual in Wheel of Time books, a glossary is included, in this case differing from that given to Part One, FROM THE TWO RIVERS.

Apart from some very minor tweaks to the glossary, the material hasn't been modified from its counterpart in THE EYE OF THE WORLD.

Due to the size of THE EYE OF THE WORLD, I'd recommend investing in a hardcover edition of the entire book rather than a paperback, because a single paperback won't hold up well even on a first read. Failing that, the split-into-two-volumes form represented before you is worth considering. A few illustrations were added, all character portraits. Although they appear to be of better artistic quality than their counterparts in THE WORLD OF ROBERT JORDAN'S THE WHEEL OF TIME (faint praise, I know) the print quality is quite poor where they're concerned.

5 out of 5 stars I liked this book........2004-07-12

In this second part of The Beginning of the Wheel of Time, Rand and his friends have fled from the city of Shadar Logoth overrun by Trollocs and Myrddraal. Sailing on the Spray ship down the Arinelle River, they decide to go separately to Tar Valon after hearing about a lost treasure, and to Caemlyn to talk to the Queen. But along the way they face many dangers along with their adventures.

As Perrin, Elyas, and Bela are heading to the city, they run across the Tinkers, a group of traveling people. Stopping to visit with these strangers before moving on, they learn that the Tinkers are believers in The Way Of The Leaf, a way of living with people without using any violence. Meanwhile, Rand and Mat are struggling to survive on their own by trying to earn money and a place to sleep. They wind up entertaining people by playing the flute and juggling balls in exchange for the things they need.

When Rand and Mat finally get to Caemlyn, they are relieved to find that the rest of their friends are alive. But they still face danger in the city of Caemlyn. Aginor, a wielder of the One Power and an ally of the Dark One, challenges Rand to a battle. Will Rand win against the One Power? Will he discover his true identity and destiny?

I liked this book because it made me think about what I would have done if I had been Rand traveling with his friends. What would you have done to survive? TO THE BLIGHT is part of the classic fantasy series, Wheel of Time, and I think you'll enjoy them.

oh, and the book is good, too.

2 out of 5 stars repackaging.......2002-05-13

This and part 1 is merely repackaging of the 1st hard-bound book [Eye of the World]. The advertisment reads as if it is a prequel. Wrong. The publisher just figured another way to make a few more dollars. The Eye of the World and all of the remaining books of "The Wheel of Time" are outstanding. They didn't need / require this treatment!

4 out of 5 stars Continuing a grand tradition.......2002-05-02

Yes, yes, I know that this is merely the second part of a book that was written more than a decade ago, but that book, "The Eye of the World", is one of the greatest works of fantasy in history, and the series which follows it isn't too shabby either. The one purpose this book, and it's counterpart, "From the Two Rivers," serves is to get people that are intimidated by the size of The Eye of the World to work up their courage and try it.

Although the storyline is reminiscient of a few hobbits we all know, the genre that the Lord of the Rings started was turned on its head witht the soryline written here. Through narrow escape after narrow escape, Rand, Mat, Perrin, and Egwene come of age in this trial by ordeal. Incredibly rich detail drips off of each page, and the climax is worthy of standig alone against any other fantasy epic.

ALthough I can't give 5 stars to a remake of another book, I heartliy endorse the book and the series.

However, can someone explain to me why Egwene, in the middle of a pitched battle with twisted trees and fierce Blightcreatures, appears to be cutting off her hair, on the cover?

3 out of 5 stars GOOD FOR MATERIAL, TERRIBLE FOR FACTS.......2006-02-16

Joel Augustus Rogers was a field anthropologist and "self-trained scholar" of African-American studies who has basically been forgotten today. This book 'Your History' is really a collection of various mini-articles about black people: famous, nonfamous, and infamous. It's a lighthearted look at various people, mostly those whom time forgot. The format of the book is akin to a comic book: on average, there's about 4-5 articles per page in which each has a picture (drawn by Rogers himself) and description of whom or what the article is about.

However, a warning is in store: Readers should take some of what Rogers says with a grain of salt. I say this because some of what Rogers asserts in some of his articles is painstakingly obvious bias for the African-American cause. Some of the "facts" are mere opinions that the "self-trained scholar" Rogers tries to pass on as semi-factual, and even then, these follies fall short of believability.

To make matters worse, Rogers fails to provide any of his reference materials for attentive readers. I'm not saying that I wanted a reference section because I think Rogers is a complete liar about everything he wrote in 'Your History' -- quite the contrary. But what I am saying is that in passages where he makes obviously biased assertions of people or places, he fails to list any reference material to back up what he preaches.

For instance, in one section Rogers explains to us that the Chinese Nakhi people contain a considerable amount of African strain in their blood... Although I've heard this Asian-African relation before, I can also say that I've never seen any reference material or anthropological, biological, etc., -type research to corroborate the statements.

Another example of this book shortcomings is the article of Muhammad, the Islamic prophet. Roger asserts it was said that Muhammad was very dark in terms of skin color. I've also read historical Islamic writings that state Muhammad was extremely light-skinned... the lack of references really makes Rogers' work suffer overall.

All in all, although this is an inadequate volume of any realistic and largely historical measure, it is "classic" for the simple fact that Rogers reveals the names and lives of many interesting black people whom we would literally never know anything about if it weren't for his work.

Book Description

Dark forces are at work within the realms of earth and sky, and a savage new dance of life and death is about to begin....the internationally acclaimed saga of the First Americans continues in this long-awaited novel from bestseller William Sarabande.

As the Ice Age draws to a close, the men and women living on the northeast coast of the North American continent struggle to adapt to their rapidly changing environment. Ancient cultures clash as warriors battle for vital hunting territories. When a mammoth is seen in a forest, the shaman, who is also brother to the headman, conjures wondrous and terrifying visions for his imperiled band as he goads them to hunt a beast that may be the last of its kind. Although an ancient legend promises death for the People on the day that the last mammoth dies, the shaman counters with a legendary promise of his own--that those who dare hunt, kill, and consume the flesh of the mammoth will be made invincible in battle. The hunt is successful but the headman is killed--and the shaman comes to power and takes possession of his brother's woman and daughter. Although he has no suspicion of his uncle's treachery, the eldest son of the former headman must live with the fear of the charging mammoth that caused him to feign injury rather than risk his own life to save his father's. Now, as the last mammoth walks the land, a young warrior who has lost nearly everything to his enemies must learn new ways, or die in a world where men, women, and even children dare not be less than heroes.

5 out of 5 stars Paleo-Indian life at the close of the last ice age!.......2005-07-03

Sarabande has set this dark, tragic tale of struggle and survival on the northeast coast of North America during the final days of the last ice age. To the paleo-Indian people of the day, the pace and magnitude of climactic change must have seemed powerful and frightening. Mammoths and mastodons remained but were obviously so well on the path to extinction that they had been elevated to enormous symbolic religious importance. Even for elders, wise shamans and the most accomplished hunters, knowledge such as migratory routes of critical food and resource supplies like caribou, beluga and geese must have seemed fleeting and frustratingly inconsistent. Cree and Inuit people from the Arctic and the unforgiving barrens of northern Quebec and Labrador, the beginnings of the Ojibway, Algonquin and Iroquois nations that found themselves more at home in the woodlands of southern Ontario and Quebec or upstate Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, plus the eastern maritime ancestors of the Micmac tribe meet, intermingle, mate and breed, battle for territorial and cultural supremacy, trade, pray and make offerings to their gods, kill or help one another, and live and die.

Sarabande fills in her panoramic, complex canvas with all the attention of the most assiduous realism painter. Tiny, single brush strokes are made with the greatest of care and no detail is too small to be included in her exquisite portrayal of this pre-historic North American landscape - the slate gray colour of the sky during a powerful late winter storm; the sickly, smell of rotting meat on the hoof as a dying mammoth searches for a final resting place; the rich, sweet colour and taste of sap rising in spring maples; the incredible development of the bow and arrow as a weapon capable of striking from a distance, terrifying hunters who know only the lesser power of a stone-tipped spear; the first hesitant use of metallic copper in weaponry, commerce and art; tattoos, jewellery and all the finery of aboriginal costumes.

In the foreground of this stunning canvas, she paints the portrait of M'alsum - a venal, self-important, cowardly, almost psychopathic headman. M'alsum abandons his youngest brother, Ne'gauni, trapped in a deadfall, dying of wounds sustained in an attack by a tribe of northern hunters foraging far out of their regular territory in the barrens. In the same raid, his mate, Hasu'u, is kidnapped and forced to serve as wet nurse to a motherless infant. M'aslum, adds self-pity, self-doubt and avarice to his list of failings and murders his two other brothers whom he sees as competitors to his position as chief.

Sarabande's description of a woodland tribesman's courageous stand against the charging mammoth and M'alsum's cowardly flight from the same beast ultimately leading it by chance over a steep embankment to its death was absolutely breathtaking. The development of the characters of the Old One and her grand-daughter, Mowea'qua, as members of a very hairy, bone-deep ugly race on which modern native werewolf mythology might have been based is essentially a whimsical flight of fancy but, frankly, I found it particularly charming.

Other reviewers have commented that they thought the story particularly cruel or savage. In an unapologetic afterword, Sarabande herself suggests that if her portrayal was harsh, it only reflected her genuine beliefs of what life was like at that time based on her extensive research into the findings of archeologists, historians, anthropologists, geologists and meteorologists. She goes on to suggest that it is perhaps to our credit that we are shocked and appalled when we read of such things. I'm inclined to agree and I, for one, found the story exciting from the opening page.

1 out of 5 stars Dark said I this book was..........2002-12-01

I find it very annoying to have to read dialog like this. Add to the fact that the story line is dark, cruel and boring and a tired take off from the rest of this enjoyable series. Really not a good read, don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Time Beyond Beginnina.......2001-12-17

This book was added to my collection of W. Sarabande books. I can't wait until the next book hits the stores.

1 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2001-11-06

I've read the entire First American series up to this book, I started the series as a filler while I waited for Jean Auel's fifth book to be published (still waiting). The series, so far has been entertaining and has certainly kept my interest. The characters for the most part are well developed and in previous books are even likable in a brutish way. I've enjoyed the spirituality of the series. Time Beyond Beginning, however is a disappointing departure from Sarabande's earlier work. It's as if the characters in this book have regressed through time and become increasingly more loathsome, savage and mean. The plot is boring, dark and depressing. Unlike the earlier works where Torka and Lonit, Cha-kwena and Maree had to endure a harsh climate and overcome many difficulties, including conflicts with several nasty characters there was always an uplifting spiritual quality to their struggle for survival. I had to put this book down along with the rest of the series in search of a more uplifting read. I would not recommend this book.

2 out of 5 stars I am trapped in time!!!.......2001-08-08

As I continue to read this series, I find myself asking, more and more often, when will it stop? Each book has had good points but they are coming farther and farther apart. The first books got you interested in the characters (the character development tends to take more than one book-though they tend to have major personality changes between books!) and then suddenly jumped through time and space, leaving our characters flapping in the breeze. So then we get another bunch of characters going and 'WHOOOSH' another jump in space and time (and more breeze flapping characters). Now we are into another bunch of characters and I've got to say...each bunch is less appealling than the last. I find I don't much like these people--nasty attitudes, nasty habits, just not the kind of folks you care about. I've noticed that the story-lines are now tending to repeat...some have been pretty hard to take the first time, recycled are really bad. I feel somewhat the victim here. Once I start a book, I simply can't stop reading it (it's a character flaw). As these books tend to blend from one to the next, I am unable to not keep going in the series-it is like one book that never ends. I hope it ends soon, I am trapped!

Oh, yeah, that synopsis is totally WRONG! Some one needs to get on that.

    Product Description

Here is a hard cover, fully-illustrated reprint edition of one of the truly classic brewing books -- Origin and History of Beer and Brewing. In 1911, brewing scholar John P. Arnold set out to fill a void that existed in brewing literature. It was to be a tribute to the founders of the world-famous Chicago brewing school, the Wahl-Henius Institute of Fermentology, on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. Up to that point, there had no comprehensive study of the brewing of beer throughout history. Arnold, a writer and historian, was particularly well-suited to tackle the collossal job of assembling a global history of brewing. He was a former student of the Wahl-Henius Institute and long-time editor of the Siebel Technical Review. In recognition of Arnold's contribution to the study of brewing history, BeerBooks.com has reprinted Origin and History's pages exactly as they appeared in the first edition, complete with nearly 100 illustrations. An original 1911 copy was digitally scanned, professionally enhanced and reproduced in a hard cover format. In his foreword, Arnold gave some sense of the daunting challenge that this book represented: "The historian must strive to penetrate into the daily doings and occupations of the people...He must settle down with them, help them brew the honey-mead, watch them till their fields and sow their millet, barley, oats, or spelt, bake their bread and from it learn to make their beer...he must join them at their gatherings, clannish meetings and convivial feasts, when they discuss their common affairs over a stoup of ale or a tankard of foaming beer...He must be able to picture for himself the days of the tavern and the tap-room, the 'Golden Age' of drinking and feasting...Then, and not until then, will we learn and understand the true history of beer and brewing from the early beginning to the present day." That Arnold achieved this lofty goal is shown by the simple fact that, nearly a century later, the Origin and History of Beer and Brewing remains a cornerstone work in brewing literature.
