dern good.......2005-04-22
I aprove of this here paper binding cuz it's good for beatin the henderson boy who lives of the other side of our compound when he listen's to that thar hippity-hop music or whatever it is. Chuck Danieels is doing our land a service by standing up to liberals, commies, and the trilatteral commision. I hope is next book of learning squiggles confronts the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. THem shady folks have been reading my mind with them sattelites for tooo long.
How does he keep track of all the people he hates?.......2004-08-26
He seems to have more love for land than the people that live on it. And there doesn't appear to be any logic behind his hate. He just hates people because they are not exactly the same as he.
He likes NASCAR? What a shock!.......2004-04-30
If wrapping yourself in the flag was all it took to be a great patriot, Daniels would win the "Patriot Of The Year" award hands down. Its great we live in country where people can express their views (no matter how extreme) and not have to worry about reprisal. Yet, after reading through this book I get the feeling Charlie Daniels is more interested in making America conform to his arbitrary standards, rather than embracing the concept of a truly free society which our flag represents. I feel Mr. Daniels totally misses the point of the flag by going on a one-sided tirade, dismissing his political opponents as freedom-hating anti-American infidels.
Having said that, there is something for everyone in this book. Obviously conservatives will love it because it echoes everything Rush, Hannity, et al have been screaming about for years. Liberals with a sense of humor will get a big chuckle, while freethinking agnostic moderates such as myself regard this book as proof that neither the left or the right controls the printing press...yet!
Whether you agree with his politics or not, Charlie Daniels is an American, just like Sean Penn. The fact that neither one of them is in jail or dead for expressing their passionate political views is very comforting. Let's just hope neither guy ever becomes president.
If you're a close-minded conservative or an open-minded liberal, then give this book a try. However, if you're an Islamic lesbian Barbara Streisand fan of French heritage, you probably won't enjoy Mr. Daniel's take on "The Flag".
If he cracked open a history book instead of his mouth..........2004-04-17
One sentence from this book will suffice to show the author's grasp of history: "The French are afraid of their own shadow. The only war they ever won was the French Revolution, and that was only because they were fighting themselves."
What about the Hundred Years War, Mr. Daniels? What about the Thirty Years War? Not a resounding triumph, but settled on French terms. What about World War I? Yes, they took a lot of unnecessary casualties in that war. Dirty little secret, Mr. Daniels: so did we.
You wanna dwell on World War II? Sure, the French got their butts whipped. They still did much better than we would have done, had we had to fight Hitler on land in 1940.
It's deeply ironic that Daniels has morphed into the kind of back country ignoramus that he satirized in "The Ballad of the Uneasy Rider."
More than a singer a man of common sense.......2004-04-15
Patriotism is great love for your country and no one has exemplified this more than Charlie Daniels. With songs like "In America" and now with this book Charlie Daniels is a true American and his book is one of the best I have read in quite some time.
Ain't No Rag is more than a simple tale of how this great nation has become and what freedom means and what it costs. Ain't No Rag is the personification of what every American should strive for.
Daniels pulls no punches and stops the "political correctness" in every page of every chapter. Daniels takes on the "Elite Left" wing, Hollywood, and all those who bash the president. Daniels gives praise to those who deserve it and respect to those who serve this country.
If you want a good old fashion helping of common sense and sensibility than get a hold of this book quickly. Regardless if political persuasion, with an open mind everyone should find this interesting if not enlightening.

Customer Reviews:
Best book ever for young boy into flags!.......2007-02-07
My son is 7 and he loves this book. The pictures and history of each flag were just perfect. he has spent hours drawing and then telling everyone about contries I did not even know about. We have had a a wonderful history lesson. Well put together for any age, adult to child. Perhaps a smart child. but a great book none the less.
A colorful and fun reference work.......2003-11-21
"Flags" is a Smithsonian Handbook that covers the national flags of the world. The bulk of the book consists of country-by-country entries. Each entry includes a full color illustration of the national flag along with text detailing the history and symbolic significance of each flag. The individual entries also contain various other visuals, such as national coats-of-arms, presidential flags, etc.
Other features of the book are sections explaining the parts of a flag and various flag terminology. Particularly fascinating is the large number of subnational flags that are depicted and explained in the book. Among these are the flags of Canadian provinces, U.S. states, French overseas territories, Spanish regions, Russian republics, and Malaysian states. I found many of these subnational flags really visually striking--from the fairy-tale like elements of the Swiss canton flags to the bold colors and geometric designs of the Brazilian state flags, and beyond. There is also section on the flags of international organizations such as the Arab League and the United Nations.
My only complaint about this fine book is that the descriptive text around the pictures of many of the national flags has lines pointing from the text onto the drawing, unnecessarily marring the illustrations. This descriptive text would have been just as effective without these distracting lines. That complaint aside, this book is a richly informative and visually exciting reference work--it's a book you can turn to again and again.
Flags.......2003-01-27
This book is perhaps the most up-to-date authority of the flags nation's fly today. It is richly colored and provides good analysis of what the flags consist of. It has the flags of the world, and many individual states or provinces within the several countries. Its organizational layout is a bit perflexing at times, but the flags are there. This book should remain the standard on the topic until flags change (which is about every three months or so).

Book Description
"This is a book about love." So begins Peggy Noonan's enormously moving collection of her post-September 11 Wall Street Journal commentaries. On the morning of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Noonan began writing, and produced at least one essay every week through September 11, 2002. These candid, compassionate and sometimes heart-wrenching pieces are full of insights and observations picked up throughout the country -- on experiencing the return of religious faith to a great modern city; on how the events influenced our perceptions of what it means to live in New York, or to be a man, or to take part in a community. Taking her own, her city's and her country's pulse, she administered a welcome dose of humanity, affirmation and inspiration, quickly attracting a large and loyal readership. This first draft of history -- a record, written on the ground, of what it felt like to be an American that day, and the days after -- balances the immediacy of the tragedy with its broader meaning for our world.
Noonan, the bestselling author of When Character Was King, brings to these articles her unsurpassed powers of description: walking on the streets and riding on the buses of Manhattan in the hours and days following the attack; watching, along with most of the country, the televised reportage, public announcements, expert opinions and tributes; witnessing our "post-incident heartache" and anxiety, as well as the "spirited gaiety of New Yorkers at this time in history." By training our gaze on everyone from firemen, Catholic and Muslim mourners and the President to news anchors, bus drivers and school kids, these essays not only depict America in all its beautiful and diverse strengths but serve as an emblem of such.
At once elegant and tough, elegiac and proud, outraged and tender, full of street smarts and down-home wisdom, this book will help Americans understand their emotional and intellectual responses to those devastating events. For everyone who felt scared, saddened, outraged and humbled but not defeated by the horror of that day, here is a balm and an apt tribute to what we lost and what we learned about ourselves.
Customer Reviews:
Plain Speaking & The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight.......2006-02-17
First, the surface: On the cover of What I Saw at the Revolution, revolutionist Peggy Noonan's memoir of her two or three years as a writer for Reagan, she looked like Mabel or Madge, one of the frazzed but bravely smiling babes who sling hash or bring cuppas at Denny's on the night shift, one of the working-class heroes that Barbara Ehrenreich slummed with in Nickel & Dimed. By the time she got to her excellent bio of President Reagan and to this book about the year of 9/11 & dangerous living, Ms. Noonan had a makeover.
She says or implies in A Heart, a Cross, and a Flag that everybody in America had a makeover on the day the towers fell. On 9/10 we were somebody; by the morning of 9/12 we were somebody else. Gales of destruction buried our surface lives, casual joys, & previous conditions of certitude. Squalls of Pompeii ash in midtown Manhattan baptized stricken survivors & watchers. In an instant on a brilliant morning we were born again into a deeper world where centers do not hold.
This morning, 4 1/2 years later, we heard that Dick shoots Quayle & Dubya shoots drugs before going to the deeper news about Oprah & J-Lo. 4 1/2 years after war came to us & we went to war, we're mired in a quagmire of 9/10 superficial surfaces. Now, as then, we are living on borrowed time in houses of cards with foundations of sand.
Impelled by deep faith, Ms. Noonan expected that 9/11's agony would bring reappraisal & renewal. She believed reasonably that our clueless multitudes would at last get a clue, if not about ultimate absolutes, then about gas bombs, germ bombs, and dirty nukes on barges in the East River. She believed by 9/20/01 that the president we almost elected president was becoming a great president leading our nation through fire and leading a mature, competent, capable administration. (The news today, oh boy: Vice President Fudd shoots crony, doesn't apologize.)
A Heart, a Cross, and a Flag is, alas, the dead past. It's what might have been. It's where we should have gone (to our knees, without birdshot) but didn't. It's where Ms. Noonan thought we were being led after 9/11 awakened us from our Clinton-Flynt torpor and before -- as Noonan wrote last month --the wheels came off the tram & the tram went off the rails. 4 1/2 years ago she saw hope rising from the ash. Now she sees trouble & dark nights of the soul.
Then as now she uses langauge well. Walking the Brooklyn Bridge and talking about plots to blow the Brooklyn Bridge, she uses simple & supple words to build bridges of meaning & understanding. Occasionally, though, her words blow up & the bridge falls down. This if from page 190, hardcover edition: "Why does Mr. Bush's seeming not to need the presidency contribute to his popularity? Why would it be, in fact, a central reason for his high poll numbers? Because when you know they don't need it, you know they won't do anything to keep it." Parse those words (but overlook the historical oddity that Mr. Bush, once upon a time, was popular), deconstruct them, break them down, and observe that "won't do anything" breaks down in ways the author surely didn't intend. Then notice on page 192, in an essay published one week later, that Noonan writes this: "The congressional elections could produce a Democratic House and a more heavily Democratic Senate. Mr. Bush will do almost anything to keep that from happening ..." Here she's writing about the enactment of tariffs (payoffs) for Pennsylvania & of a pork-larded farm bill for cultivators of corporate welfare. The point I'm making is that plain speaking can be as messy as politics, and that Mr. Bush, even when popular, had embarked on a vote-buying binge with money that Mr. Reagan used to say belonged to us.
(In When Character Was King, Ms. Noonan's biography of President Reagan, there are several places where her plain, simple, supple words come unhinged and where little dissonances -- about snakes or makeup, for example -- knock bricks out of the wall or the bridge of understanding.)
Catharsis in print.......2004-09-01
Having been a Peggy Noonan fan for some time, I was excited to read her collection of essays in the aftermath of 9/11. I was not dissapointed in the least.
Ms. Noonan offers readers her particularly personal and charming perspective on everything from firefighter admiration, to anger, to faith, to the politics of terrorism. In doing so she reminds us why she should be considered among the best essayists of our generation.
In the interest of fairness, there were times when I wished the book was more cohesive. The lack of cohesion is a natural consequence of these writings being stand-alone essays. Still, at times this distracted from her otherwise brilliant writing.
When A Heart, a Cross, and a Flag shines (as it so often does), it is a therpautic and prosaic look at our country's most challenging moment. An excellent choice for like-minded conservatives as well as reasonable patriots of the left.
The Way It Really Is Out There.......2004-08-17
This book was given to me by a very good friend of mine, MaryAnn. On 9/11/01 we sat next to each other in work in New Jersey. We watched and listened in horror as the events of 9/11/01 unfolded and realized from that moment on the world as we know it will never be the same. The following year, we actually picked that specific day to fly on a business trip, 9/11/02, to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11 and to show the terrorists we are not afraid of them. Ms. Noonan actually discusses how people are afraid to fly today in the last chapter. For some people this book will not be politically correct, so be aware of this. Ms. Noonan can not heap enough praise on the firefighters who responded on 9/11 (MaryAnn's brother was one of the brave firefighters who responded on 9/11, a real hero). I enjoyed and re-read over several times the chapters that referred to the 9/11 events. I agree with Ms. Noonan that we are in a war with terrorists, even though there may not be people who realize this. I enjoyed how other subjects were interwoven into the book, the Pope, how life went on after 9/11. Ms. Noonan described how she walked across the Brooklyn Bridge the morning of 9/11/02. Her descriptions and how she captures her feelings are written beautifully, each of us should have tried to capture our own moments. I know some people picking up the book may not want to read about President Bush or the Pope but the descriptions on the weather, how people continued to live their lives after 9/11 were great. If anyone feels as though their civil rights are being violated, just read Chapter 18, "Everybody's Been Shot", even if you are in a bookstore just read it. I've updated this review on 11/30 after I saw on TV people feel as though their rights are violated when they are searched boarding a plane, wake up people remember 9/11 and days afterwards, the shoe bomber, Everyone's been shot, read this section. If nothing else read the poems on pages 23 and 24 (they were tagged for me, thank you) and the poem on page 79, Two Thousand One, Nine Eleven (read these several times). Ms. Noonan describes Brooklyn Heights and beauty (I went to St. Francis College in the Heights). The past two years MaryAnn, other co-workers and myself have gone to Brooklyn Heights to view the Blue Light tribute to 9/11/01. Everyone should see this from Brooklyn Heights and everyone should read this book. Thanks for writing the book Ms. Noonan. This is an awesome gift.
Terrible author, terrible book.......2004-01-29
Peggy Noonan is a biased commentator and frankly her views are outdated
I had high hopes for this book but..........2004-01-29
All I found was endless drivel and redundant focus on themes without bringing anything new to the table. It was difficult getting through the 400 -plus pages. I took heart in the chapter where Peggy paints a picture of the ideal world where every citizen will salute the cross and flag, and then "take heart" in the new Republican revolution, but a lot of it doesn't fly. Especially her ruminations on how GW Bush can twerp the constitution in order to get a 3rd term. I just don't think that'll happen soon. Maybe when Rumsfeld becomes president. He has the brains to do it.

Terrific fun/instructional aid for children........2006-05-21
Never has our country needed a book about our Pledge of Allegiance more than at this time. Barbra Clack's book comes to the rescue for both parents and teachers. Her book is a well-written, age-appropriate, and delightfully illustrated explanation of the precepts proposed in The Pledge.
Adults/teachers will benefit from this book also as they read it to their children. The back of the book contains additional information about our Pledge, the flag, and other symbols of American freedom that is quite enlightening, even to us old-timers!
My advice: parents, get a copy for your home. The book would also make a wonderful gift for friends or family with children. Teachers, speaking as someone with twenty-eight years of classroom experience, I would advise you to get a copy for your classroom and put one in your school's library. Share it with your peers; however, keep track of who has it, or you might not get it back! This one's a keeper!
Great book for elementary students!.......2006-05-14
I am a 30 year veteran school teacher. I wish this book had been available when I taught school. I have never seen the pledge explained in a better way. Every classroom needs this book in their library!

Book Description
What does it mean to talk about a `national' cinema? To what extent can British cinema, dominated for so many years by Hollywood, be considered a national cinema? Waving the Flag investigates these questions from a historical point of view, and challenges the received wisdoms of British cinema history in many ways. Andrew Higson investigates theories of national cinema, and surveys the development of the British film industry and film culture. Three case studies combine histories of production and reception with textual analysis of key films from the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s such as Sing As We Go, Comin Thro the Rye, and This Happy Breed. Drawing some revealing conclusions about the extent to which the many rich traditions of British film-making share the same distinctive stylistic and ideological characteristics, what emerges is a sometimes surprising picture of a specifically national cinema. Combining detailed analyses of film texts with studies of industrial and cultural contexts, including critical reception, Waving the Flag is an impressive and wide-ranging survey of the concept of national cinema as it has developed in Britain. `by far the best book about British film yet published', Choice `a thoughtful, stimulating, and well-researched book.' , Sunday Telegraph `this painstaking piece of scholarship, which manages to home in on the most minute narrative and stylistic details of the films under scrutiny and to excoriate notions of what "Britishness" is all about.', TLS `a valuable addition to British film writing...which adds considerably to our understanding of British cinema history', Screen `the book is packed with detailed analysis, dense arguments, and an impressive breadth of cultural reference', Media, Culture, and Society `an exciting new book...valuable to all those concerned with how the cultural analysis of film relates to the economic context.'
