Thank you, Thank you, Thomas!.......2007-06-12
As an Ojibway living in Oklahoma (far from Canada, where my family is from), I am thrilled to find a book like this one. It is BEAUTIFULLY printed, with heavy, glossy pages loaded with full-color art, photos, maps, and text. The work of Thomas Peacock is amazing; I learned things about my own tribe I hadn't known until now. He is not writing some puny, new-age pop-culture book on "Indian spirituality;" this is a serious, authentic, well-informed treatment of Ojibway history, legends, life, and current events. As a father of two childre, one of whom carries the middle name "Ojibway," I am VERY pleased to have this book to read with them, as well as Peacock's other titles, "The four Hills," and anything by Winona Laduke, Gerald Vizenor, and Basil Johnson I can find.
From oral traditions to Ojibwe ways.......2006-03-19
OJIBWE WAASA INAABIDAA: WE LOOK IN ALL DIRECTIONS is a special pick for any comprehensive Native American collection: it details the story of the Ojibwe people who have lived on the North American continent for thousands of years, using text, photos, and illustrations in full color to capture their origins, history, and spirituality. From oral traditions and language to ways the modern Ojibwe are preserving traditions, OJIBWE WAASA INAABIDAA is a 'must' for any comprehensive Native American collection.

Book Description
For generations, the Ojibwe bands of northern Wisconsin have spearfished spawning walleyed pike in the springtime. The bands reserved hunting, fishing, and gathering rights on the lands that would become the northern third of Wisconsin in treaties signed with the federal government in 1837, 1842, and 1854. Those rights, however, would be ignored by the state of Wisconsin for more than a century. When a federal appeals court in 1983 upheld the bands' off-reservation rights, a deep and far-reaching conflict erupted between the Ojibwe bands and some of their non-Native neighbors. Starting in the mid-1980s, protesters and supporters flocked to the boat landings of lakes being spearfished; Ojibwe spearfisher-men were threatened, stoned, and shot at. Peace and protest rallies, marches, and ceremonies galvanized and rocked the local communities and reservations, and individuals and organizations from across the country poured into northern Wisconsin to take sides in the spearfishing dispute. From the front lines on lakes to tense, behind-the-scenes maneuvering on and off reservations, The Walleye War tells the riveting story of the spearfishing conflict, drawing on the experiences and perspectives of the members of the Lac du Flambeau reservation and an anthropologist who accompanied them on spearfishing expeditions. We learn of the historical roots and cultural significance of spearfishing and off-reservation treaty rights and we see why many modern Ojibwes and non-Natives view them in profoundly different ways. We also come to understand why the Flambeau tribal council and some tribal members disagreed with the spearfishermen and pursued a policy of negotiation with the state to lease the off-reservation treaty rights for fifty million dollars. Fought with rocks and metaphors, The Walleye War is the story of a Native people's struggle for dignity, identity, and self-preservation in the modern world. Larry Nesper an assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Customer Reviews:
I highly recommend this book.......2002-09-07
Dr. Larry Nesper's 13-year journey with the Lac du Flambeau Indians becomes a thoroughly enjoyable and scholarly example of modern ethnographic work. The book meticulously details all of the issues relevant to Ojibwe spear-fishing and treaty rights as 1) native tradition, 2) cultural conflict (conflict both within the native culture, and between the native population and the State of Wisconsin), 3) inter-cultural legal conflict and controversy, and 4) an example for current dialogues regarding ethnicity and ethnic conflict, ethnic prejudice, and racism. Nesper clearly outlines all pertinent issues of the 25-year "Walleye War" from every angle, and conscientiously works his way through them, all the while carefully explaining different cultural perspectives. Even though Nesper states that he has become friends with many of the native people about whom he writes, he does not let his own feelings of friendship taint the truth. I recommend the book for enthusiasts of native culture, academics (especially those teaching cultural anthropology), and anyone interested in the history of, and current issues regarding, treaty rights and the relationship between native cultures and state or federal government entities.

Delightful.......2005-10-31
I read this book as part of an assingment for a class (Children Resources for Children and Young Adults). I loved it. I am also currently taken Ojibwe and enjoyed how the authors incorportated Ojibwe words. The illustrations are simple, yes, but add charm to the well told (or rather retelling) of the origin of the lady slipper.
I recommend this to any teacher. Please, incorporate it in your class (high school teachers, too!). On a latter note, after reviewing it for class, I realized that this book was written by my teacher. Margi is the nicest person and an excellent teacher. And her book reflects her spirit.
a little heroin from the North country.......2004-08-20
This beautifully illustrated edition of the Ojibway legend lends itself easily to reading outloud to groups of children in the classroom or anywhere else. The colorful pictures help the flow of the story, both of which help hold the youngsters spellbound. Young children identify with the characters in the story and having one of their own age group in a situation of bravery and steadfast love empowers them. Excellent book.
Ma-ki-sin-waa-big-waan, the Moccasin Flower.......2001-11-28
This is such a pretty book that tells the tale of the Ojibwe legend of the laddy slipper or moccasin flower. The illustrations are simple and colorful and greatly add to the folk atmosphere of the book. A little girl must go on a heroic journey through a freezing wintry night to find healing herbs when her whole village is stricken with terrible disease. She is encouraged along her route by the spirits of the stormy environment who speak to her in the Ojibwe tongue. This is an exciting and satisfying story and makes an excellent conversation starter to teach little ones about communing with the elements of Nature.
Excellent Choice!.......2000-11-01
This book is excellent for all ages. It contains beautiful illustrations to compliment the story of a little girl's courage. A good one for use in a classroom.

Excellent.......2007-03-09
I realy liked this book, because I use it for my Ojibwe Language Class and I had one copy but I sent it to my nephew in Kansas
Superb.......2005-12-31
John Nichols and Earl Nyholm are two of the top linguistic experts on the Ojibwe language, and this dictionary is a collaboration between the two of them. It contains many words for parts of modern life (bemisemagak, "airplane," wiisiniwigamig, "restaurant," odaabaan, "car"), but also a wealth of terms for traditional aspects of Ojibwe life (zibaaska'iganagooday, "jingle dress," bagida'waa, "fish with a net," wiigwaasi-makak, "birch-bark basket"). It may not have 100,000 words like large dictionaries of well-studied languages like English, but it does have over 7,000 (which, for a language like Ojibwe, which has only recieved a lot of serious scholarship relatively recently, is quite impressive). Which may not sound like a lot, but I've found that, whenever I need to look something up, it's almost certain to be in there. The first few pages offer a (very brief) sketch of the phonology and a quick overview of some aspects of the grammar, although only enough to be used as a starting point for more detailed study using other resources. The book does not purport to be a grammar, however, but merely a dictionary, and a "concise" one at that. For a "concise" dictionary to nearly always have the word I'm looking up (I've been using it for about a year now, and there are still only a few words I've tried looking up that I haven't found) is a fairly impressive feat, at least in my mind. I'd highly recommend it to anyone interested in the Ojibwe people or the language.
Ojibwe Dictionary.......2004-08-14
Given the price, I was not expecting this dictionary to be as long or as detailed as it is. Both the English-Ojibwe and the Ojibwe-English sections have multiple examples and word forms for each entry. There are 7000 words included here. I've bought $75 dictionaries with less material than this. An excellent value. Includes a pronunciation guide and a basic grammatical overview.
This is a great informational book!.......2002-04-21
As I am researching the Ojibwa peoples currently, I find myself pulling this book out 3-4 times a day, and it has not failed me yet. The vocabulary covered in this book is simply enormous, and if you're tired of looking at online dictionaries, pick up this book--well worth the cover price.
My only complaint is that Ojibwe, being a 'verb-based' language rather than a noun-based like our own, is very hard to piece together in sentances. There is a tiny chapter at the beginning of this trying to explain it, but it doesn't do a very good job. Thus it's frustrating to look up one word and find 4 different spellings for it.

Book Description
For more than twenty years Louise Erdrich has dazzled readers with the intricately wrought, deeply poetic novels which have won her a place among today's finest writers. Her nonfiction is equally eloquent, and this lovely memoir offers a vivid glimpse of the landscape, the people, and the long tradition of storytelling that give her work its magical, elemental force.
In a small boat like those her Native American ancestors have used for countless generations, she travels to Ojibwe home ground, the islands of Lake of the Woods in southern Ontario. Her only companions are her new baby and the baby's father, an Ojibwe spiritual leader, on a pilgrimage to the sacred rock paintings their people have venerated for centuries as mystical "teaching and dream guides," and where even today Ojibwe leave offerings of tobacco in token of their power. With these paintings as backdrop, Erdrich summons to life the Ojibwe's spirits and songs, their language and sorrows, and the tales that are in their blood, echoing through her own family's very contemporary American lives and shaping her vision of the wider world. Thoughtful, moving, and wonderfully well observed, her meditation evokes ancient wisdom, modern ways, and the universal human concerns we all share.

Book Description
Shingebiss, a little merganser duck, can always find plenty to eat. In all seasons, the Great Lake is full of fish. But one cold year the lake freezes over, and Shingebiss has to find a way to fish through the thick ice. To do that, he must face the fierce Winter Maker. Gracefully told and illustrated with vigorous woodcuts, this ancient Ojibwe story captures all the power of winter and all the courage of a small being who refuses to see winter as his enemy. This sacred story shows that those who follow the ways of Shingebiss will always have plenty to eat, no matter how hard the great wind of Winter Maker blows.
Customer Reviews:
Shingebiss.......2000-05-22
Van Laan's retelling of this legend, a favorite of mine as a child, is a wonderful find! The story is comforting and exciting for children as young as 4 as a read to. It's good for use in schools, thanks to her authentic use of Ojibwa names for the characters. But those same names make it hard for younger readers to pick up the book--read it to them first and then they will be motivated to work through the Ojibwa words. I'm only mildly fond of the woodcuts.

Customer Reviews:
Like Having a Tutor.......2005-04-02
This first of a proposed three programs teaches the Ojibwe language (a.k.a. Chippewa or Anishinaabemowin) in a fashion which is refreshingly new and different from other language material and courses. Instead of presenting new elements of vocabulary and grammar in choppy sequences of unrelated events, it builds up on a conversation by expanding a dialogue from one session to the next. The progression includes consistent reminders of previous lessons in an aural construction of a simple greeting between two individuals into a longer conversational interaction. The price seems a bit high for a package of sixteen tapes. The cost is comparable to purchasing several individual Anishinaabe language tapes which the market offers. It has an advantage in the continuity which exists from the first of the many tapes to the last, and its method of delivery avoids the dullness of continual rote memorization. For those who care to further their abilities and print in the language, any web based search engine or a distributor's search engine such as the one on this page can display a selection of texts which instruct in or include writing the Ojibwe language.
