Customer Reviews:
"History is the elongated shadow of great men,".......2006-10-21
wrote Thomas Carlyle.
Ignatius Loyola not only was a great man, but a saint. His influence today is greater than during his life. The network of high schools and universities in the United States (and the rest of the world) speaks to his wisdom and greatness.
The Spanish are justly famous for their aphorisms and there a plenty good ones in this book. Including some I didn't know were first articulated by Igantius.
The engravings in the book are just great! A very nice touch indeed.

Product Description
On March 17, young Jamie wakes up and realizes it's St. Patrick's Day. The green sashes are laid out on the table for his father and two older brothers--all ready for them to sport in the big parade. This is all very exciting, but Jamie's family had told him he was too small to walk in the parade--too young to make it all the way up Acorn Hill. He decides to take matters (and his trusty flute) into his own small hands, and embarks on an early morning walk--all the way up Acorn Hill--with his dog Nell. What did they know? Sure enough, while the village is sleeping, he traverses the parade route to the top of the hill where he greets the sun with a hearty, "A happy St. Pat's to you, sun." And, he makes it home before breakfast! While no one finds out what Jamie has done, you suspect that he may tell his family later. Kids will love the fact that Jamie climbs all the way up the hill when everyone said he couldn't. A simple but satisfying St. Patrick's Day read-aloud, and an IRA/CBC Children's Choice. (Ages 4 and older)

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful St. Pat's Day book.......2006-10-06
I loved this story. My mom would read it to my brother and I every March, and we would get so excited as the 17th approached. I, like Jamie, loved marching in our parade. Now I have a son of my own, and hope he enjoys it as much as I did.
Making your own way.......2001-03-20
Young Jamie wakes early on St. Patrick's Day, much earlier than his sleeping family. He remembers that there will be a parade to the top of Acorn Hill today, and then he remembers that his brothers say he's too little to march in the parade.
Well, fine then! He'll just have a parade of his own!! Jamie sets off in his green sweater, hat and coat with Nell the dog and march up the center of town to Acorn Hill by themselves. Along the way, the meet some of the other villagers, one of whom gives Jamie an Irish flag that he proudly waves in his own parade. Does he make it to the top?? You'll have to read to find out!!
"St. Patrick's Day in the Morning" is a beautiful story for any child who has ever been told that they're too small, too weak, too short, too this, too that, to do something. You can see Jamie's' happiness at proving everyone wrong. The pen and ink illustrations are lush and detailed: you could count the shingles in the roofs or the bricks in the walls. Green and a little yellow are the only colors in the book, emphasizing the spirit and colors of St. Pats in Jamie's sweater, the flag of Ireland and, of course, the lush green grasses of the Emerald Isle.
Because it's not a book about the history or legend of St. Patrick, there is no reason to limit it's reading only to March 17th. Teachers would find it a useful book in teaching both about Ireland and, of course, proving that smaller doesn't mean incapable. A fine book by Bunting and Brett, and highly recommended.

Book Description
Count along with the forest friends in this shimmery board book! Five bright green holographic shamrock tabs and fun rhyming text make this a St. Patrick's Day treat!
Customer Reviews:
My son loves this book.......2007-02-23
This book is perfect for babies & small children. My son is 9 months old & this is one of his favorite books. It has short phrases on each page while teaching numbers & doesn't have a lot of pages. The colors are bright & pictures are cute. The edges of the pages have a shamrock & my son finds it easy to turn the pages. He's also attracted to the cover because the shamrocks are shiny.
Perfect for a Wee One.......2006-03-22
This board book makes for a good introduction to St Patrick's Day for younger kids because of it's simple concepts, colorful pictures and sturdy construction. (It can also be used year 'round for it's counting.) "St. Patrick's Day Countdown" is a book that counts backwards from 5 down to 1 using St Patrick's Day theme items and then some; bunnies, shamrocks, a pot of gold... you get the idea. It's also fun because the book is not exactly book shaped but has grabbable shamrock "tabs" so little ones can help turn the pages. I bought this for my one year old niece and her mom said it was "perfect". I like that it does not have hit-you-over-the-head St. Patrick Day overtones (ie. nothing religious) to it but still captures the spirit of the day.
Book Description
It's St. Patrick's Day follows two children as they celebrate this joyous Irish holiday. Customer Reviews:
Really Cute Book.......2007-03-09
Perfect for Irish-Americans. Those who don't share the heritage might not understand what the book is talking about. It is a really cute book, beautifully illustrated.
Perfect for teachers!.......2004-03-14
This is a wonderful book to read for your St. Patrick's Day Celebration. Appealing illustrations and just the right amount of text for those 3-4 years olds with a shorter attention span. Great introduction to the holiday. Can be tied to your classroom activities (turn your juice green, ask an Irish Step dancer to visit, etc.) Highly recommended!

We Have A Winner.......2006-03-11
This is a really cute book with great illustrations that makes wonderful use of bright colors. It also tells good stories and is imaginative in the objects chosen to represent the individual letters. Being half-Irish, I did find it objectionable that one page said: "B is for beer. The Irish drink lots and lots of that!" HEY ONLY JOKING!!! That's not in here. Shame on me. Seriously, however, this is a pretty book and little ones should love it and parents too. Easily five stars.
Book Description

Customer Reviews:
Snooooozzzeee..........2007-03-09
I'm always a five star kind of reviewer, figuring if it wasn't great why say anything. Actually that applies to how I approach people and situations too. Except it can get to a point where...it's not fair to me. I have a right now and again to notice and speak to situations as they are... This has to be written up review-wise as something that just went stale. And I'd much rather pretend otherwise. Basic honesty however precludes delusions.
Today I read this to my 1st graders watching them for reaction and it's just not there. This was nothing more than beautiful green illustrations and a few facts. I am sorry but I lost 'em. And lately that's hard to do, they love stories. Go get Tomie De Poala, really. Not to be mean, I love other Gail Gibbons, but I think pages that say some people wear green or have parties is scraping for material. Yeah, we knew that, thanks. Wow, green huh? Why not teach twenty Irish expressions, or show some native dress, or discuss the crafts of Ireland, or the cities or perhaps get some facts on major contributions of the Isle to our fair land, or discuss the potato famine, or even tell about St. Patty parades. But maybe I'm being a bit picky. But still. Some "decorate with shamrocks". Okay even moon people know this. My second language kids were rolling upside down in sheer boredom. Not even recounting specifics about what foods....Irish foods? Why not list some and put in a nice soda bread recipe or corned beef recipe. Come on if we are going to try it let's get inspired. Rip out some content. Sheer a sheep if you have too. Speaking of which I really recommend Charlie's Cloak, De Poala. What a winner.
Teachers can get stuck in those content poor zones now and again, disappointed with this or that, maybe it's all in striving for excellence.. Or maybe my grumpy-ness...maybe it's getting the third wave of fevers having been terribly ill this month or the news of the passing of a loved one...ah well for whatever reason the cover is actually delightful and certainly the pictures sound, the text slimmer. My biggest dread in U Pick It Read Aloud Time is the students asking to go get drinks. Today was a record, they all went. It's not easy to put together a solid holiday book. This one fell flat today leaving me hanging there like a limp rag.Albeit a wet one.I really think it's one I'll put in the home book bags.Sorry.
A fabulous book about St. Patrick's Day.......2006-03-22
This is a beautifully illustrated, well written, story about the life of St. Patrick and descriptions of how and why we celebrate this holiday. My daughter is very interested in her Irish heritage and read it to her Kindergarten class this year. It was a hit!
Thorough book about St. Patrick's Day.......2006-03-10
This book gives a thorough, yet simple explanation about St. Patrick's Day. Each page has beautiful illustrations and one to three sentences. It gives a simple 2 page intro, then spends 7 pages about who Saint Patrick was, then 14 pages of all the ways people celebrate/symbols (church, leprechauns, shillelagh, harp, cards, sweets, flowers, plays, meal, parties, and parardes), then two pages on celebrating it in the US, and then 3 pages of legends about Saint Patrick. A great introduction for young children.
Book Description
An off-duty police officer is shot and ex-nun Chris Bennett and her police-detective boyfriend find this motiveless murder puzzling. Praying for a break, Chris pursues a killer along strange paths: a pilgrimage that takes her from a suburban convent to a Brooklyn fruit market, and deep into the sacrosanct world of the NYPD--and ultimately back to the deadly place where it all began.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2006-08-02
When I read the Good Friday Murder by Lee Harris, I was delighted by the possibility the other books in here series might combine a good murder mystery with the personal story of a faithful Catholic. I am sorely disappointed. The author seems not to understand Catholic teaching and could easily mislead readers into believing that her character, Christine Bennett, is a faithful Catholic. No former nun would intentionally commit mortal sin and believe she is still a good Catholic. Beyond this glaring oversight, the prose is dismal.
A GREAT CHALLENGING MYSTERY.......2000-08-14
Christine Bennett spent half of her life in a convent, but left before making vows, as she realized it was not for her....she then moved to Oakwood in New York state, where her deceased aunt left her home to her... This is the 4th book in the series.....I suggest if possible, you read them in order, starting with the first one, The Good Friday Murder.....you won't be accurately choosing the villain/murderers as the author keeps us guessing right up to the end!! Christine is an intelligent, considerate, warm person who has slowly built up an intimate relationship over the course of the books, with police-detective Jack Brooks....she still has kept her friendship up with nuns from the convent and visits them frequently....There is not a thing NOT to like about Christine, Jack, nor this series.... After reading the first book, I immediately went to the bookstore and bought the entire series......I hope you, too, do the same..........you won't be disappointed, this is no "ordinary" series!

Edna Barth has made a name for herself creating engaging nonfiction books about the origins of holidays from Easter to Halloween. This may sound like a simple enough task, but books like hers are few and far between, making her concise and well-researched titles all the more valuable to parents, educators, and students alike. For Barth, it seems, the calendar year swims with holiday colors. "Sometime in February," her St. Patrick's Day book begins, "the hearts and cupids of Valentine's Day give way to shamrocks and leprechauns, Irish harps, flags and shillelaghs, clay pipes and top hats. The color green floods the windows of card shops, candy stores, and departments that sell gifts, souvenirs, and decorations for holidays. St. Patrick's Day is coming." Barth goes on to explain the origins of this ancient Irish holiday, including a 15-page chapter on St. Patrick himself; the history of this partly religious, partly festive holiday through the centuries; and a lively discussion of the symbols we associate with the greenest of green days--leprechauns, Irish music, top hats, shamrocks, shillelaghs, and more. A list of stories appropriate to read around March 17, a bibliography of sources, and an index round out this solid, simply illustrated exploration of the ins and outs of St. Patrick's Day. (Ages 9 and older)
Book Description
Shamrocks, shillelaghs, reed pipes, and leprechaunsthese are some of the many symbols that remind us of St. Patrick's Day. Who was St. Patrick? And what is this early spring holiday all about? With warmth and vitality, Edna Barth tells the colorful stories, legends, and historical facts behind St. Patrick's Day and shows how the spirit of this ancient Irish holiday is still alive in many countries. Illustrated with black and white drawings by Ursula Arndt, this is a book to be discovered and read with pleasure by young readers. All of Edna Barth's classic holiday books are now being reissued with fresh, new jacket designs and fun activities inside the paperback covers.

Irish Traditions and Legends Simplified.......2000-03-27
What a wonderful book for adults and children alike. I found this book to be a terrific help in understanding some of the legends and history of Ireland and St. Patrick's Day. It was also invaluable in explaining these to my younger children, both at home and in Sunday School classes.
Both the writing and the illustrations work to offer a better understanding of Irish traditions. All in all, not only an educational read, but a pleasant one, too!

Book Description
The first friend I ever had was a leprechaun. We used to write to each other. I would leave notes for him at bedtime. In the morning, I would find his answer. So begins this true account of an enchanting correspondence that would last for seven years, and a friendship that would last a lifetime. The original childhood notes of Martin Nelson Burton and the warm, fatherly replies of Mr. Leprechaun spring to life in Clint Hansen’s breathtaking paper sculpture world.
Customer Reviews:
A Note From the Author.......2005-10-17
I greatly appreciate the kind words of the reviews below. I do want to make it clear that in my book, I do not state that my father is the one who wrote the leprechaun's notes to me. True, some people think the leprechaun was my father. But many others - especially children - strongly believe that the leprechaun wrote to me himself. I respect both sides, and included the actual notes in the book so the reader could decide. I am satisfied the story can be fully enjoyed either way.
Exactly what we need in a childrens book.......2004-03-23
Recently came across after reading a nice review on it and let me tell you it is everything you would hope for in a childrens book and so much more! It's a classic!
Mr. Burton does a nice job in telling his story and the art is different-something that gets the childs notice-but in a nice way. The story does not speak down to the child but rather treats them with intelligence (and my grandkids love that) and it makes them put things together (rather than force feeding the kids what the author wants them to believe). It's a heart warming tale of love between father and son (we also need more of that).
I bought my first copy last week for my youngest grandson, and 3 more are on the way for my others. Great book, I highly recommend!
Youngest children may not "get" this without help.......2003-09-13
One would think this was a work of fiction, since leprechauns do not actually exist (here in the US, anyway). However, the Library of Congress has cataloged it as nonfiction under the topic of Love--and rightly so. This book is a beautifully illustrated collection of letters between a boy and a supposed leprechaun, who is actually the boy's very patient and creative father.
Toward the end of the book, the narrator says he never saw a photograph of the leprechaun. On the next page, the illustration is of the narrator looking at a framed photo, the back of which is to the reader. To the adult reader, the companion text makes it obvious that the narrator knows that his father was the leprechaun and that perhaps the father has died. But it would be quite a leap for the book's 4- to 8-year old audience to make those connections.
It really is a charming book, but plan on reading it with younger children so they are not left confused or unsatisfied with the story.
Great for teachers.......2003-03-25
This charming tale has much usefulness for a classroom setting. It ties in with the themes of writing, friendship, families, imagination, St. Patrick's Day and Leprechauns. A book with this many possibilities for curriculum tie-in is worth the expenditure for school and public libraries.
Magic of Childhood.......2003-03-20
I have never seen a leprechaun, but author Martin N. Burton made me feel as if I was experiencing the magic of the leprechaun who was his childhood friend. The well written story is the reason why I loved this book and why I loved reading it to my own children. The writing style is fun for young readers and for their parents who may find themselves reading out loud in an unintentional Irish brogue.
Mr. Burton captures the gentle magic of childhood that is enhanced by loving parents and lasts a lifetime. The friendship and love revealed between the child and his father makes this a perfect story for Father's Day. If your children believe in fairies, Santa, and other magical beings, they will find irresistible the possibility that they can have their own leprechaun friend.
Dear Mr. Leprechaun discretely encourages children to write their own letters so they too can discover what might happen. The illustrations are beautiful and convey the magical world of childhood.
