Book Description
In this lively adaptation of "The Gingerbread Boy," a bold little man made of matzah jumps out of the baker's oven and leads him and everyone in the neighborhoodall of whom are preparing for Passoveron a merry chase. With colossal chutzpah, the Matzah Man taunts Cousin Tillie as she is cooking brisket, Auntie Bertha trying on her new spring shoes, and Grandpapa Solly making gefilte fish. He at last arrives on the doorstep of clever Mendel Fox, who offers him a hiding place under the Passover matzah coverand when the seder meal begins, that's the end of the Matzah Man! As she did in Latkes, Latkes, Good to Eat, Naomi Howland has created a humorous tale, charmingly illustrated, that overflows with holiday festivity. Glossary.
Product Description
From Publishers Weekly Like most of this season's Hanukkah offerings, Howland's (ABCDrive!) uses the holiday as flavoring rather than the principal ingredient. Her agreeable outing combines a classic fairy tale plot with a shtetl setting and a touch of the Sorcerer's Apprentice. A girl does a kind deed for an old woman, who gives her a magic pan that will fry up latkes. Her brothers overhear the secret words that will start the pan cooking, but not those that will stop it (the words are "A great miracle happened there," to which dreidels also refer). Howland serves up friendly, folk-ish art, containing the excesses of the plot with down-to-earth depictions of people and village. Ages 5-8. (Aug.) Makes a wonderful little play.......2000-12-18
We have a very small religious school. Only 9 children from kindergarten through 6th grade. Wanted to do something with them for Chanukah. Found Latkes, Latkes. Read it to them. They loved it! I rewrote it as a play and they performed it. The parents and other members of the congregation loved it! The latkes luncheon after the play was the sour cream and applesauce for the day! I was extremely pleased with this book!
Highly recommended for young readers........2000-02-14
This Chanukah is an excellent story for the season. Sadie and her four younger brothers are poor and always hungry, but Sadie is given a frying pan that cooks up latkes on demand. When her brothers become involved in the find, trouble ensues.
A nice addition to the Hanukkah treasury of books.......1999-11-07
What can I add? The reviews above give you the proper feeling for the story. Best of all are the female heroes, and the good deeds performed. Just in case you happen to obtain a magic pan of your own, the secret words to stop it are the translation of "Nes Gadol Haya Sham"

Book Description
A Holocaust survivor shares Hanukkah with a loving family that gives him the courage to remember.
Customer Reviews:
My favorite Hanukkah story.......2006-12-07
I love this book. I teach 3rd grade and happened upon it quite by accident. It was by far the most effective way to teach not only about Hanukkah, but also in a very age appropriate way, about the Holocaust. It lead to great discussions that day. I was moved to tears when I read it the first time. Yes, it is a story about deep grief, but also about the strength to live in unliveable situations. I highly recommend this book to anyone who teaches, who has children, or just wants to read a beautiful story of hope and renewal.
More Than a Hanukkah Story.......2000-04-05
30-page picture book. Slightly longer than your average picture book but still short enough for one sitting. Two children invite Morris, the flower vender, to join them for Hanukkah. The holiday brings back painful boyhood memories as he recalls the horrors of the holocaust and the last time he celebrated Hanukkah with his own family. Emotional healing begins when he shares these memories with the Becker family. A perfect introduction to the holocaust for sensitive younger audiences. The holocaust story is not graphic or overwhelming but does portray a strong sense of sadness, hopelessness and loss. Makes a good read-aloud for older students as well.
One Yellow Daffodil.......2000-04-03
This emotionally engaging story is partly about Hanukkah andpartly about the Holocaust, but is mostly about real people and realfeelings. Morris Kaplan, a lonely man who is a Holocaust survivor, is very kind to Jonathan and Ilana, a brother and sister who come to his flower shop regularly to buy flowers, by giving them more flowers than they actually have the money for. A friendship develops and the children invite Mr. Kaplan to their home to help celebrate Hanukkah. This small kindness changes Morris Kaplan's life---and that of the family. I loved this story and the good feelings it evoked in me. I would recommend this story for all ages.

Book Description
The unforgettable story of the first Hanukkah.
Long ago in Jerusalem, the greedy king Antiochus IV ordered his soldiers to steal treasures from the Holy Temple. When the Jews tried to defend their temple, the furious king punished them harshly, and the Jews were forced to observe their faith in secret. But a brave man named Judah led his people, the Maccabees, against the king's armies. Victorious, the Jews restored the Holy Temple. They dedicated it once again to God in a joyous celebration -- the very first Hanukkah.
Here is a moving retelling of a timeless story. Young readers will also find the legend of the menorah, instructions for making a dreidle, and the music for a traditional holiday song.
Customer Reviews:
Let there be light..........2003-06-16
Most Westerners know of Hanukkah from the appearance on calendars, but few outside of Judaism know much more about it than the very basic candle-lighting, and even that most of the goyim don't really understand. This book, 'Festival of Lights: The Story of Hanukkah', by Maida Silverman, is in reality a children's book; however, like many children's books, it is a wonderful teaching tool, and this one could teach adults just as well as it can children.
The book is beautifully illustrated by Carolyn Ewing. The full-colour pictures, appearing on every page, show people in period settings and costumes. Hanukkah is based on actual historical events; unlike Yom Kippur which is a more `philosophical/theological' holiday, this one is much more an historical memory event. That, of course, is fully in keeping with the general importance given to history by the Jewish people.
Hanukkah commemorates the Maccabean revolt against Hellenic overlords, and celebrates the miracle that occurred during the rededication of the Temple.
This book, in a merely 20 pages, recounts the story in simple terms that develop the military and political historical events, as well as the importance of tradition and the Temple in Judaism at that time. This book is not so much an original story as it is a retelling of the story. The retelling of story is also traditional in Jewish culture, a time-honoured tradition that occurs with individual families often incorporating their own experiences into the fabric of the story.
The final pages tell of the legend of the Menorah (a candelabra which, for Hanukkah, has 9 candles), the legend of the dreidle as well as instructions for playing the dreidle game and instructions for making your own dreidle, and the words and tune to the Maoz Tzur, which means Rock of Ages, a song of praise for the rededication of the Temple.
Hanukkah is a holiday whose importance has arisen among Jewish peoples as a response to the ever-growing influence of Christmas. Hanukkah is actually a fairly minor holiday in the Jewish calendar, save for the importance given to it as a counter to the almost overwhelming intrusion of commercial Christmas into daily life during the late fall and early winter seasons.
Hanukkah is also a holiday that Christians show know, and could even celebrate. The events tell of historical events that pose no theological difficulties for most Christian denominations and belief systems; indeed, had the Maccabean revolt not been successful, and had the Jewish people been either destroyed or assimilated, then the culture that gave birth to Jesus and his disciples would not have existed a few generations later.
This book is short and sweet, a good holiday gift for children. Published by the Little Simon division of Simon and Simon, it is intended for kids who can read at an early elementary level. It is done in a narrative style that lends itself to character readings, so children or adults could easily adapt this for an oral retelling of the story, or even put together a short play from the text.
A Perfect Book For Chanukah.......1999-11-26
I read this to the children in my Sabbath school class. It is worded simply enough for a child to truly enjoy and understand it. It is factual and to the point, so adults can appreciate it as well. It is very colorful and well illustrated. I HIGHLY recommend this book for parents, children's Sabbath morning classes, babysitters, etc etc. Its wonderful. Its a wonderful gift to give to children : nieces, nephews, grandchildren. Its such a nice book even people who have no children will appreciate this book. I have no children, and I love this book. (However I read to the children in the neighborhood as well as to the children in my congregation) Such a wonderful book I can't say enough about it.
Customer Reviews:
A book from my childhood.......2006-12-27
I remember this book from when I was a child. Now that I have children of my own I am THRILLED to find out it is still in print. I have fond memories of reading the stories by myself and can't wait to share them with my children.
Sparkling.......2005-10-26
Isaac Bashevis Singer-one of the greatest story-tellers of all time-opens this sparkling series of eight Chanukah stories with a reminiscence from his own childhood in his parents' house. He recalls once evening, the last night of the festival of lights when his father, a rabbi in Warsaw, allowed his children to play the Chanukah game of dreidel.
On this occasion, it was snowing, and his brother Joshua pointed out that each snowflake was a hexagon-it had six sides "with fancy little designs and decorations." His father added that it was the world of God Almighty. The story then explains how the game of dreidel works, right down to the meaning of the letters on the little top. And it imparts the story of a miracle contemporary to his father's time.
All eight other stories, including the title piece about Chanukah during the Nazi era, are miracles in their own right.

We think it was a very nice story. It had lot's of feelings. It was a very entertaining story. Hunter and Callie.
Almost Too Good to Be True.......2002-07-23
The book, that is. The stories and pictures are just unbelievably warm and beautiful. I often read this short book cover to cover during Chanukah--one sparkling little gem a night. Just perfect for adults and, I'm sure, children, too. In fact, I can't imagine anything nicer than to read these to a kid on Chanukah. This book is the perfect gift, to yourself or anyone else. And if you can find yourself a hardcover copy, then you're *really* in luck.
Wonderful!.......2000-01-27
I really enjoyed this book. This book has eight stories, one for each night of Hanukkah. All the stories were interesting and had beautiful illustrations. My favorite story was The Power of Light. Isacc Bashevis Singer is a Nobel Prize Winner. This is a great book.

Don't waste your money!.......2005-05-07
What a disappointment! This book contains a few basic recipes, which are padded with recipes for everything from yeast bread to quick bread (with no explanation of what they're doing in a cookie book) and cookie recipes from various marketing boards. There are awesome cookie books on the market (and available from Amazon); even Betty Crocker's would be better than this -- and, for about the same price, you can get Judy Rosenberg's wonderful, detailed, book of awesome TNT cookies. Don't waste your money on this one!
A mouth-watering collection of holiday cookies.......2004-10-11

Let it Snow, I'm Baking Cookies.......2003-12-16
"Like many of you, we want to stay connected to our loved ones and to our friends and family around the world. Christmas cookies are more than just baked goods. They are a tangible and tasty link to our past, our traditions, and our memories. They are gifts hand-made with love especially for their recipient."
Kristin Johnson and Mimi Cummins have created a festive book filled with recipes, stories and tips for making unique holiday gifts. Kristin and Mimi lived next door to each other when they were young children and remember the scent of cinnamon, cookies baking and eating cookie dough.
Kristin is an award-winning writer who has written about food online and is famous for her cookie-baking. Mimi Cummings is an avid cookbook-reader and recipe tester. She has worked with professional pastry chefs and also created a website for her grandmother's legendary Christmas cookie recipes. Her site is now the most comprehensive repository of Christmas cookie recipes on the Internet. You can also look for favorite Christmas recipes at the Cookie Exchange forum and even submit your favorite cookie recipe.
"Christmas Cookies Are For Giving" is filled with cooking advice, Christmas stories, cookie recipes and inspiration. You will find heirloom recipes from family and friends, brand-new original recipes, recipes developed by chefs and even a few recipes from Kristin and Mimi's favorite food promotion organizations. Some of the traditional recipes date back to before Mimi and Kristin's ancestors immigrated to the United States.
Each recipe has a full-color photograph to inspire a festive mood and a shopping trip to buy ingredients! Most of the recipes include ingredients you will already have in your kitchen, but you might want to go shopping for mason jars, ribbon and fabric to make the "Cookies in a Jar."
Contents:
The Giving Christmas Cookie - A poignant story about a woman's memories of Vanillekipferl (Vanilla Crescents) from Vienna and how her recipe leads to bringing Christmas spirit to her community.
Christmas Cookie Baking: Tips and Hints -Anyone who is new to baking will appreciate these tips. There are also tips for using the best ingredients and using insulated cookie sheets, which I can also say are highly recommended.
Christmas Cookie Recipes - The recipe for "Vanillekipferl" made with blanched almonds, sugar and vanilla. This recipe also shows you how to make vanilla sugar. There are recipes for everyone from the gourmet coffee connoisseur to art lovers. Children will love the "Cathedral Windows" and "Butterball Santas." Coffee lovers will enjoy the "Walnut Cappuccino" or "Cherry" Biscotti. "Cranberry Spice Bread" is perfect for shipping to friends and family. Just wait until you see the picture for the "Chocolate Cranberry Holiday Bars" and "Pistachio Cookie Tree." The recipe for "Speculaci" includes a story and information on how to paint cookies. You can use the Royal Icing on pg. 130.
Christmas Cookie Gift Presentation - Delicious ideas and great suggestions for making up cookie baskets with additional treats. You might want to include copies of this book to encourage the "giving" tradition.
Shipping Christmas Cookies - What type of cookies can you ship? How do you package them and how do you ship them?
Gifts in a Jar - Great idea if you don't have time to bake. You just pour layers of ingredients into a jar and decorate in a festive way.
Christmas Cookie Stories - The first story is an amusing story about a woman whose marriage is based on Springerle. I believe it after seeing the look on my husband's face when I tried to change a chocolate chip cookie recipe he loves. He won't eat them now unless they have Muscovado sugar in the mixture! There is also an adorable and very amusing story of how a three year old makes her first Christmas cookies. This is the type of cookbook you want to read while sipping a cup of tea while wrapped up in a down comforter by a fireplace.
This cookbook is the most meaningful book I've read this year. It brought back my own memories of my grandmother baking more cookies than we could ever eat in one holiday season. I remember Christmas cookies stored in cookie tins that always tasted like they had just been made. She was famous for always keeping a few cookies hidden in tins for tea after the holidays.
Since no one in our family seems to make as many cookies for the holiday season, I've tried to carry on this tradition by making tins of cookies for my family each year. This book has given me some new ideas and I even found the recipe for "Cathedral Windows" that my aunt makes each Christmas.
"Christmas Cookies Are For Giving" is filled with Christmas spirit, loving memories and delicious buttery cookie recipes! If you are looking for a Christmas gift for your friends and family, this book is more than a cookbook, it is a wish for future holiday memories.

Start a family tradition!.......2003-11-14
I recently got this book and read it in one sitting. It is different from most cookie cookbooks because it includes not only great recipes, but charming stories about family traditions and the cookie recipes themselves. For people who don't bake as a family tradition it makes you want to start!
I most recently made the recipe for bar cookies and shared them with family and friends and they were a big hit. More than 1 person confessed to having the cookies for breakfast because they could not wait until later to have more. The book itself is nice quality and has nice pictures. The recipes are easy to understand so you can make unique cookies without any fancy equipment. I plan on giving the book as a hostess gift for Christmas parties, for a secret santa gift at work, and for teachers gifts - afterall who doesn't love cookies?
Heartwarming Christmas Cookie Book.......2003-11-13
This cookbook not only gives you many wonderful cookie recipes for Christmas, baking tips, how to pack and ship these goodies for sending to friends and family locally or far away, and how to prepare Gift Cookies in a Jar", but the book also begins with a wonderful heartwarming "Dickensian" style story set in modern times, "The Giving Christmas Cookie". This is a story of a family with the Grandmother in a "Home" stricken with Alzheimers, and how a very loving woman who also resides in the "Home" reaches out to the daughter and grandaughter of this woman to bring them back together making Christmas a happy time again for the ailing Grandmother, and also by making the special Christmas Cookies, it brings happiness and joy back into the other ill and lonely peoples lives who also reside at the Home, even if it's just for one day.
Now for the recipes. They are terrific! So many favorites from simpler times when making Christmas cookies was a family affair; a joyous time between mother and daughter, mother and son, or the whole family pitching in. The recipes are created by the authors; recipes from average people with wonderful stories to tell about their experiences in life with making Christmas cookies with their families, and recipes contributed from commerical food companies, and food organizations. I highly recommend this touching and very informative book. It's one you will pass down to your children and grandchildren. Give this to people you love, and give it to yourself. It's one of the best gifts you'll receive this year.

Reminders that trigger memories.......2006-02-25
The book begins with a girl asking her grandmother why she is wearing her clothes inside out. The response is that it helps her remember to buy the oil to fry the potato latkes for Hanukkah. This starts a series of reminiscences where Grandma remembers many of the joys in her life. They are simple things, like how the granddaughter's hair is the same color as her deceased grandfather and the color of pennies in a jar. It is about family, and the memories that are generated. It ends with the girl's father arriving and telling his mother that her clothes are inside out. It is a wonderful story about connections between people.

Biscuit's Hanukkah.......2007-03-14
Biscuit's Hanukkah is a board book about a little girl teaching her dog, Biscuit, about some of the customs of Hanukkah. This book introduces some Hebrew words such as shamash and menorah, in a simple, sweet way. The illustrations are colorful, fun, and full of Hanukkah décor and Judaic symbols. It is an appealing introduction to this Jewish holiday that is sure to be popular with its target audience of very young children.
For preschool and younger.

Hanukkah is Here.......2006-01-05
It is Hanukkah and Biscuit and the girl with the purple sneakers are getting ready to celebrate with their friends.
Together they make a menorah as a gift for their friends. There is a little explanation about the object but not much. The gift is then presented to the friends and happiness ensues.
Although the book makes an attempt to talk about the candles, only the difference between the eight candles and the Shamash candle is mentioned. So while it is a fun book and Biscuit is up to his usual antics, there is little actually about Hanukkah here.
