Book Description
"I'll swap you my dad," I said.
"Oh-oh," said my little sister.
What if you wanted your best friend's two goldfish so much that you'd swap anything for them, even your father?
What if your mother came home and found out what you'd done?
The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish is a hilarious adventure and was the first book for younger readers from the acclaimed author and illustrator of the New York Times best-sellers The Wolves in the Walls and Coraline. Chosen as one of Newsweek magazine's Best Children's Books of the Year, The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish is beloved by readers of all ages. This new edition features brand-new jacket art and an afterword by the author on the origins of this unique and wonderfully funny story.

A Great Family Story.......2007-08-06
I bought this book so my daughter could read along with the recording of it on her music player. It was a nice surprise to have the CD included in the book, as well. This is a funny story that we all enjoy.
Lovely.......2007-05-09
This is a wonderfully fun book about a boy who trades his dad for two goldfish. His mother tells him he has to get his dad back, so he goes on an adventure, walking from house to house, swapping items until he finally gets his dad back. His dad seems to have been oblivious to the whole thing, just reading his paper the whole time. A fun book with beautiful illustrations (typical Dave McKean drawings). My 6 year-old daughter loves it.
I bought this book just beacause of its artworks/design.......2007-03-15
and I mean it. They are awesome, and come together very nice in the whole.
But the most impressive is that they are so thoughtful, full of collages, hidden messages, paint textures that they tell the tale just like the text.
For All Ages.......2006-12-14
This is a great little book that can be enjoyed by children of all ages, or children at heart. The story is basically about a boy that swaps his father for 2 goldfish. What he finds out is that the person he swapped with has swapped his father with someone else and this continues in a chain until he finally finds his father.
This is such a great book, right up to the caliber that would be expected of Mr. Gaiman. As usual, Dave McKean's illustrations are absolutely amazing. Even if you don't read the story, this book is great to have just as an art book. Enjoy it!
A Review for a bedtime story.......2006-11-05
I liked the illustrative quality of this book, the story is simple , original, and with humour, my six year old daughter enjoys it, although it is very different from her world, in every way.

An everyday yet new lesson taught.......2006-12-03
From this book My brother, My sister and I, I learnt quite a lot, though a lot of the dialogue seems to be cold and unnatural, the theme is the most important part of it. In this book the orphans Hideyo, Ko and Yoko squeeze through all the hard times and find new ways of over coming these things. In the end, the three of them find a special someone who may not look the same but is the same person, they live happily ever after (at least for now)

Possibly not fiction.......2005-10-10
I read this book several years ago and could hardly put it down until I finished it. I wrote to the publisher to ask if this book was fiction, but I got no reply. I had the impression in reading it that is was not fiction, and yet the words 'fictionalized' and 'novel' are used for it on Amazon. I was curious to know what is fiction in it and what is not.
I differ with some reviewers criticizing the book's language or style. There is nothing wrong either, as I recall. Nor is the book only for children or "young readers" by any means.
WOW!!!.......2003-06-24
This book is a wonderful book. I have read it over 3 times now and I still want to read it again. Before I read the book I had some sibling problems, and after reading it I am now closer to my sisters. It teaches you how much you need your family and what they can do for you. I think it is more than a 5 star book. It should be a 100 star book. I think if most people in the world read it our world would be changed. It would be peaceful and people would not get into big arguments. That is how much this book can change us. If you don't beleive me you should read this wonderful, fantastic, brilliant book by Yoko Kawashima Watkins. It is one novel you'll never forget!

Customer Reviews:
Where have you been all my life?.......2005-09-10
I was browsing in a bookstore connected with an English language school when I saw this title. For years I'd been hoping to find even one book which, oh please dear God just this once, end with something other than the same old, same old, tired old lecture that put-upon older siblings have no option but to eternally suck it up and keep swallowing their mounting exasperation.
More out of habit than hope I picked the book up and read it... and I bought it on the spot. I would have given anything for a book like this when I was younger! The drawing's not the greatest and the action is sometimes unclear, but there is nothing unclear about the initially welcoming older sibling's increasing frustration.
For firstborns, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Only too many books out there already expressly FORBID them to open their mouths to stand up for themselves whenever the source of their irritation, exasperation, (and yes, I'm here to tell you, sometimes deliberate torture) just so happens to be YOUNGER!
Rather confusing book for young readers........2002-02-22
I ordered this book along with two other My First I Can Read Books for my daughter who is in first grade and is really struggling with reading. On the whole I was disappointed with it.
The words were pretty easy for her to read, but I had to do a lot of explaining for her to understand what was going on. The way the book is written, the child needs to look at the pictures to figure out what is going on. In fact, a few pages are completely without words. The problem is the pictures do not clearly show what is going on. I had to explain "See, the little girl doesn't know what to do. She is just standing there instead of looking for her brother. Oh, see, her brother is hiding in the pile of leaves. Oh, look, she is going to sit on the pile of leaves."
Another thing I did not like about the book was the ending, when the little sister doesn't play hide and seek the right way, her brother says he is not going to play with her anymore. That is not something I want to teach my daughter, who has two younger siblings.
The book is okay, but there are other My First I Can Read books that are better. Check out the Biscuit books. My daughter loves those, and they are really helping her with her reading.
Children with Younger Siblings Will Love This!.......2000-05-08
This book is about a little boy who is trying to teach his younger sister how to play hide-and-go-seek without much success. It is written in short sentences and easy vocabulary, making it ideal for the youngest of readers. Any child with younger siblings will identify with this little guy and his exasperation at having to play with his little sister!

very realistic depiction of sibling affection.......1998-01-24
This book is full of messy rooms, harried parents and a child's description of her little sister; as well as the emotions she feels towards her. Every page and sentence rings with the truth. Older children will connect with the honest feelings of the big sister. The artwork is well done. An enjoyable read and a treat for the eye.

So-so.......2007-03-20
This book says it's to help kids learn to read, but actually it's a silly tongue twister. It's a little tough for me to read out loud.
I don't recommend this for developing reading skills. It's not worth buying.
I'd rather have Ice Cream than go swimming!.......2003-12-07
My little brother and I used to request this nearly every night as our bed-time book, (back in the early 80s). My favorite part was when Thump and Plunk made up- they got to have ice-cream! This reward has apparently been changed to "a swim" in the new paper-back. I also seem to remember Thump and Plunk being mice, or some sort of rodent. If you can get ahold of an original version, I would recommend that.
Hours of solid gold entertainment!.......2000-08-17
This book I remember from my childhood. the hours we spent reading it over and over again, and it still made me laught out loud. And hey when your little it counts. A must have for parents and children!

Reassures our son while his daddy is away from home.......2005-05-01
I purchased this book on the advice of a family counselor because our son (2 1/2 years old) was having a hard time adjusting to his dad (my husband) being gone on deployment with the military. It has been a great aid to get our son talking about his dad and remembering the things they do together like playing ball, going for walks, learning new skills like riding a bike. Remembering all the fun and cool things they do together has helped reassure our son that Daddy still cares and that they'll get to do fun stuff together again when he comes home. Our little guy usually doesn't like new books (he prefers his old, broken-in favorites), but he took to this book immediately and asks to read it every night. There aren't many daddy books available (as opposed to the volumes of mommy books) and this certainly must be one of the best. I especially recommend it for military families who will be separated because it gives a good departure point for discussion with your child about his or her father and what Daddy means to your child.
Also recommended: Daddies Are For Catching Fireflies (our 16-month-old likes this one) and The Very Best Daddy of All (companion to My Mother is Mine).
Perfect Father's Day Gift.......2000-02-25
I have a 4 year old son and we gave this book to my husband for his birthday. It has become the most treasured book that they try to read everynight. With all the questionable ideas that kids can see and hear, even in some books, this book was truly refreshing and heart-warming.
My husband enjoyed the book so much that he purchased "We're Very Good Friends My Mother and I" for me for Valentine's Day and "We're Very Good Friends My Sister and I" for our 7 1/2 year old daughter to read to her brother. We also plan on buying the other books the author has written in this series.
Book Description
To free his father and himself from his mother's tyranny, Pierre Rivière decided to kill her. On June 3,1835, he went inside his small Normandy house with a pruning hook and cut to death his mother, his eighteen-year-old sister, and his seven-year-old brother. Then, in jail, he wrote a memoir to justify the whole gruesome tale.
Michel Foucault, author of Madness and Civilization and Discipline and Punish, collected the relevant documents of the case, including medical and legal testimony, police records. and Rivière's memoir. The Rivière case, he points out, occurred at a time when many professions were contending for status and power. Medical authority was challenging law, branches of government were vying. Foucault's reconstruction of the case is a brilliant exploration of the roots of our contemporary views of madness, justice, and crime.
Customer Reviews:
A Battle of Discourses.......2006-06-07
The reason Foucault is not attempting to interpret Riviere's deeds is NOT to show simply how "people respond to a crime", as a previous reviewer put it. By publishing this collection of texts, Foucault was attempting to recover the struggles and plays of forces between juridical and psychiatric discourses in their attempt to make sense of the murders and the murderer. The legal and psychiatric discourses attempt to envelop Riviere's own account of his deeds in various power relations (mainly by marginalizing Riviere's voice as either that of a parricide or that of a madman). Had Foucault interpreted Riviere's deeds, he would have subjected them to strategies similar to those employed by the medical and legal experts.
This is a fascinating collection (don't skip Foucault's introduction though!), but a reader would definitely appreciate it more after reading Discipline and Punish or "Two Lectures" in Foucault's Power/Knowledge.
Against Interpetation: The Bald Man Pleads Indecision.......2001-07-04
Okay, the reason why Foucault did not interpet the reasoning behind the crime was because the issue of guilt or innocence was not his topic. He was more interested in how people treat crimes and approach the issue of criminality.
It is not Riviere who is at trial *again* in Foucault's book, but rather it is a trial described, which could be any trial. A crime after the fact is a story, a memory for those who were involved, but we all become involved in an event as if it were a story we have heard before. What other way to approach a murder that is to us words and the heaving bosom of a witness, the placid tension of the accused? We confront a forced performance with confused or feigned characterizations.
Yet even said, this is not Foucault, nor what Foucault was reaching for. All Foucault does is show how people act in response to crime and reveal the obvious ploys that repeat themselves throughout history, because the story that composes our lives has not died.
And if a man approached you with a mark on him, and claimed to have killed his brother, and the soil did cry out to you, would you raise your hand against him?
This book is a good accompanyment to his work Discipline and Punish.
Is America in love with its Serial Killers?.......2001-02-08
It is early in February, 2001. Can it be said that America is in love with its Serial Killers? Sure. With the range of "Reality TV" and movies, the writing is on the wall. What about a healthy alternative to all this bloodbath? What about a truelly intellectual examination into the complexity of the criminal mind. Part Dostoyevsky, part unbelievable, "I, Pierre Riviere, Having Slaughtered My Mother, My Sister, and My Brother ... : A Case of Parricide in the Nineteenth Century" is a highly thought provoking analysis of the social construction of the criminal. The book guides you through the labyrinth/maze that is the criminal justice system and the mechanism involved in the prosecution of the criminal. The book is comprehensive, it includes testimony (from several angles), a suspect written confession, trial examination and post archival examination. Foucault has brought together through his talent to uncover archives and present them in an interesting manner. If you are looking for an alternative without sacrificing the excitement of a murder mystery - this is your entry ticket to the Post Modern examination of crime. Nothing less than 5 stars!
Fascinating Story--Not Enough Analysis.......2000-06-20
The story of the young Frenchman who murdered his family is a fascinating piece of documentary work by Foucault and his student assistants. However, I would have liked to know much more about how they interpret this "unusual" behavior.
A fascinating and enlighting read........1998-08-08
First don't be mislead Foucault has a paper in this work, but acts as editor not author. Having said that, it is another great work by Foucault.
Book Description
"Too often, Sister, the beautiful things in life are taken for granted, and I realize that you are one of the most beautiful aspects of mine. That's way it's so important for me to tell you now that you are special to me." - Deanne Laura Gilbert
Very few people will ever know you as well as a sister does. She is your connection to the past, present, and future. She remembers all the holidays, birthdays, vacations, and reunions you've shared as a family -- and holds them like treasures in her memory. You can turn to her with all the triumphs and tragedies that each day brings, knowing that she's the one person in your world who will welcome you with open arms and a receptive heart. As you look ahead to the rest of your life, you see your sister always by your side, wherever your individual destinies lead you.
This book is for anyone who has know the joy of having a sister to share everything in life with -- and who has searched for the perfect way to tell her...
"It's funny -- when we were kids, we never thought we'd even like each other, much less love one another. But now that we've grown older and closer, I can't imagine my life without your being an important part of it... I want to thank you... for being the best sister I could ever hope for!" - Donna Gephart
Customer Reviews:
Are you joking?.......2007-07-18
Are you joking? 5 stars? If I could give this book 0 stars, I would. This is not even poetry! It's unimaginative thoughts chopped up to give the appearance of a poem. I got no image or feeling from reading these.
Here is a sample poem:
Is is that
you starve a fever
and feed a cold?
Or is it the other
way around?
Considering this dilemma
I think I'll just
feed both!
Now if a friend said that to me in passing I would get a little chuckle but as a poem?!?! It's just not even original. I am sure she is a wonderful woman. From the title's of her other books it seems like is all about empowering women. Stick to that.
A Guide for a Wonderful Attitude.......2001-04-28
I have not only read the book but have had the pleasure of meeting the author. Both book and author are full of wit, wisdom and insight. The book is very cleverly written and is full of subtle suggestions on how to manage many situations that you might come up against in a positive way. Not only will it make you laugh, it will bring an occasional tear to your eye. You will see a lot of yourself or your friends and loved ones in many of her poems. Definately a wonderful addition to anyone's library. Put this wonderful little book on your "must read" list.

Jake's not the guy he used to be.......2003-08-23
This is one of the most hilarious books I've ever read. Jake has switched bodies with his teacher, the president, and now he's switched bodies with his sister! This book made me think about what things would be like if I was someone else.
what i think.......................2002-05-06
i think this was a good book. i think it was a cool idea to have someone switch bodies with the opposite sex, and even their sister. i think that more books should be written. some about maybe being trapped in his moms body and one with his girlfriend too. i think that would be cool. i also know that deep down, a lot of us guys wud spend a day to live this story. if i were jake, id wanna spend a day as his sister, mostly to know what it was like. i give this book a perfect 10.
a GOOD BOOK NONE THE LESS.......2001-05-09
IN this book jake switches bodies with his sister jessica Jake does this to impress a pen pal from japan. This book asks the intresting question how would you like to be someone else for a day. After reading the book i as a guy want to know how it feels to be a girl for a day
totally cool but not as good as the other books.......2000-12-31
i love this book, but it doesnt compare to the other Help!s. ok, so the insults exchanged at the beggining of the book were lame. 'your brother's so stupid he sat on the tv and watched the couch.' 'you're so uncoordinated you slept on the floor and still fell out of bed' uh huh. i also thought the whole 'let's be nice to each other' was kind of corny too. BUT i love the whole thing where Jake is trapped in Scarcely Hers, a major girly store, and he's obsessing about Girl Rays that he thinks are gonna stunt his growth, take away his manhood[no i dont mean it like that, sicko!], and scar him for life. that was again, lame, but very cute. and GEEZ, why'd he have to CRY at the end? being a girl isn't that bad! but the funniest parts were when Jake was bad-mouthing Jessica's boyfriend, Dan Winters, a flirt with bad acne.
awesome..........2000-06-04
i am a guy, and believe it or not, after reading this book, i actually want to know what it is like to be a girl in real life. I thought it was a very good book, and it had lots of action too.

Book Description
From the creator of the blockbuster Sandman series. . .One day a young boy has an idea, the kind of idea (like discovering electricity or fire or outer space or something) that changes the whole world.
