Looks exciting/ can't wait to study all the details!.......2007-10-01
So many details in this book, the sky's the limit as to where all the clues may be hidden. I bought this book for my kids to challenge their imagination, but it would be a challenge for any adult. This book is beautifully written and illustrated as just a story book/ face value/ even if not used as a treasure map!
Writing this w/ my cousin........2007-04-23
To begin, I have to say, the story itself does not interest me that much, the characters being overly simplistic and largely cliched. The puzzles on the otherhand are wildly devious, with an intricacy, that would put Will Shortz (NY Times Puzzle editor) to shame.
Sadly, I cannot see myself (nor would I ever), reading, or using this book again once the hunt is "completed."
For this reason, parents, despite the 'easy reading' in the story, if your kids want anything out of the book, be prepared to invest long hours working with them.
Still, as a 17 year old 'Trover' (term for fans of Stradthers work.), I tend to work on the puzzles alone, and I may refer to the story with help for some solves that only work 'in context' (Some of the books secrets are found in story), I cannot find any lasting appeal in the story beyond the hunt. So while it is largely worthwhile to pick up for the hunt alone, once, the hunt is over, the only hope of sales, is for those dedicated 'trovers' who do it for the fun, rather than the reward. And while I experience/appreciate this feeling, if you're going to be a 'treasure hunter' why look for treasure long since taken?
Will you read it again after the hunt is over?.......2007-03-13
Michael Stadther, Secrets of the Alchemist Dar (Treasure Trove, Inc., 2006)
The A Treasure's Trove crowd is back with another big treasure hunt, and another chapter in the story of Zac, Anna, and Pook, as well, of course as Alchemist Dar, the new leader of the imprisoned (at the start of the book, anyway) dark fairies. Dar has a plan to kill the good fairies and steal the Rings of Eternal Life they wear around their necks (and why, may I ask, do they wear them around their necks and not on their fingers?). Zac, Ana, Pook, and the forest militia have to find a way to stop him-- but how?
Treasure-hunt books are not all that rare, actually; what is rare is a treasure-hunt book that stays around long after the treasure has been found. In order to pen one of those, you need to make sure the treasure aspect of the book isn't what carries it, because the treasure is nothing more than a gimmick to get people to read the book-- or that's all it should be. All too often, it becomes the only thing that makes the book worthwhile-- thus dooming the book to an abbreviated shelf life and an eternity of obscurity. And, like A Treasure's Trove before it, Secrets of the Alchemist Dar is exactly that kind of book-- there's a story here, but it's not nearly detailed enough to stand on its own, and the underlying characters lack any real depth to hold a person's interest for longer than they will spend looking for the treasure.
(For the record, as far as I know, only one treasure-hunt book published in my lifetime is still widely read: Ellen Raskin's 1978 Newbery-medal winner The Westing Game.) ** ½
Secrets of the Alchemist Dar - Review.......2007-03-11
Secrets of the Alchemist Dar - A Brief Review
The book can only be found in the children's section of the most well-known book store chains. Why would anyone hope to sell a book there? Well, Secrets is such a book. Secrets is not just a fantasy, it is also a treasure hunt, filled with imagery, and hints that invite even more images. If you have ever enjoyed tales, this book promises and delivers a unique tale, filled with reminders of flash lighted faces stories told at campfires, at home, and with wonder.
The author dedicates his book to anyone who reads it with a child. The illustrations range from the seemingly crude to the sublime, mystery and wonder. Is it a classic tale retold? Maybe, Maybe not. The story begins with a dance, and ends with something else. Oh no, I won't give that secret away (it might be a solve). If you go to the website dedicated to this hunt, you will hear that often enough, and you will meet people as interesting as the characters in this book. But be careful some of them might be alchemists or worse.
Alchemy, the very word invokes images of menace. Laboratories where vile things like pollution of the environment for greed takes place by villains of every sort. And a challenge, the author makes you part of the story, and you accept. Teachers are invited to investigate the educational possibilities presented.
Biology, physics, mathematics, probability, social responsibility, jurisprudence, archeology, geography, astronomy, history, and research - its all there, and more. Exploring the possibilities. Did the author succeed with this? In my view, yes.
Parents would welcome the opportunity to share this adventure with their children. Age appropriate? Thousands of adults have read and enjoyed this book, not just once, but many times. The book however is not for adults, it is fundamentally a child's story, a tale told to awaken the imagination, the first place reading begins. Then, it reaches in to stir curiosity, and awaken possibilities. Then seemingly out of the blue, critical thinking based upon observation, hypothesis and reasoning starts to take root.
A Real Brainbuster (with Beautiful Graphics).......2007-01-25
This book has been a lot of fun for my entire family. We haven't come close to figuring out one location, but it's fun to try. And the art work is just superb.
For those of you who stumbled upon this review by accident (and don't actually know what this book is), let me explain. This is a book of clues to actual locations that contain actual gems. The gems are very valuable. This is the second book in which the author has hidden gems and used the book as a sort of "treasure map."
The books is hours of entertaining fun. And for the very ambitious -- it could be quite profitable!

Great book!.......2006-05-20
"It was a little scary, a little funny, and easy to read" said my son Toby, aged 6.5, after reading this excellent book. He also says there were only about ten words he did not know. The illustrations are good and they do not give the story away -- Toby had to read the words. Toby says "don't give up!".
Great book for early reading.......2005-08-10
This is a very enjoyable pirate story for beginning readers or for us parents to read to our kids. It is about kids of pirates that go to school every day just like toehr kids, only they go in a school bus painted row boat to a giant pirate ship/public school. The lessons they teach are backwards to our own morals and not fair, as the kids are to be greedy and not share, and worse yet to fight when they have disputes. But these rules dont work when it is treasure hunt day on the spooky island. Although each boy claims to have found the treasure first, they quickly learn tha if they are to survice, they must ingore the pirate rules and instead cooperate, share, help out, and trust each other. Wonderful story, I highly reccommend.
FUNNY!.......2004-10-03
This book entertained us all as my son went through his 4- year old Pirate phase. Really funny. Great Price!
Pirate School.......2004-04-24
My 7 year old son is obsessed with Pirates. This is his favorite book. He makes me pretend that he is Pete and his brother is Grimy and I need to substitute the names. He is autistic and learning for him is difficult, but we have taken suggestions from this book to make school fun for him as well. He learned math by using gold coins and likes to do everything the boys do in the book. It is a fantastic book which explains how important it is to share and not to fight with others. I highly recommend this book.
A very fun book.......2002-07-29
I am the mother of two boys ,ages 3 and 4 ,who both adore Pirates. This is a fun story with a great lesson. One of our favorites. A great buy.
Book Description
The essential follow-up to the BusinessWeek bestseller Trading Up
A BMW in a Costco parking lot?
A working class family with a 50 inch plasma TV?
A 27-year-old Japanese administrative assistant with a collection of Coach purses?
An 87-year-old retiree in Ohio exclaiming the value of Aldi brand honey?
What's going on in the mind of the new consumer?
Today's consumers can seem impossible to understand, and even harder to please. For instance, the average mall shopper will spend her $100, then leave when she hits that limit. She'll probably buy shoes rather than clothing, because she doesn't want to think about her dress size. And the store most likely to get her money isn't the one with the nicest display or the deepest discounts... it's the one closest to her parking spot.
In his research with dozens of leading companies, Michael J. Silverstein has interviewed thousands of customers, extracting fascinating patterns about what really drives their purchase decisions. His first book, the acclaimed bestseller Trading Up, has taught a generation of marketers about the "new luxury" phenomenon, and why consumers will happily pay a steep premium for goods and services that are emotionally satisfying, from golf clubs to bathroom hardware to beauty products.
But Trading Up only revealed part of the story of the new consumer. The same middle class consumers who are happily trading up at Victoria's Secret and Panera are going on treasure hunts at Costco and Home Depot. And they are often getting as much emotional satisfaction in the discount stores as in the luxury stores. Silverstein's new book explains how the new consumer approaches bargain hunting, and how even the most mundane shopping Â- for things like paper towels and pet food -- have become an adventure rather than a tedious chore.
It turns out that, in just about every consumer category, both the high end and the low end are growing and innovation rich. Many middle class consumers gladly spend $5.00 a day for a vente Starbucks latte; others spend 40 cents a day on home brewed coffee, feel good about their frugality, and save up the difference to buy Apple's newest Nano. Treasure Hunt explains the success of companies as diverse as Dollar General, LG, H. E. Butt, Ebay, Commerce Bank, and Tchibo.
Beware: in our bifurcated global market, businesses need a clear strategy for aiming high or low, while staying away from the treacherous middle, where so many have recently stumbled. If your offering isn't exciting enough to inspire trading up, but not enough of a bargain to satisfy the treasure hunters, you'll have no emotional connection with your target audience. And, like General Motors or Sears in recent years, your tried-and-true marketing strategies will go into a severe stall.
Treasure Hunt takes us into the homes of real people making real decisions, and into the CEO's offices of innovative companies finding new ways to accommodate them. Written with the same flair, empathy, and intelligence that made Trading Up an instant business classic, this book is an essential guide to the moods and habits of the constantly changing consumer.

Why we scrimp then spluge.......2007-06-27
The BMW in the Costco parking lot is the operative metaphor of "Treasure Hunt: Inside the Mind of the New Consumer." Silverstein describes the flip side of "trading up" -- the trend in the luxury sector that was the subject of his best-selling first book of the same name. Consumers are buying more pricey goods, he writes, but they are also "trading down" -- treasure hunting -- for bulk goods and items that do not have high emotional value.
The phenomenon creates huge opportunities for companies that figure out how to meet customers at the bottom or the top of the price continuum, and disaster for those stuck in the middle. Silverstein profiles the market, introduces us to consumers that exemplify a variety of buying behaviors, then shows us companies that have figured out how to adapt and win.
Laden with numbers, charts and examples, "Treasure Hunt" could be the treasure map for businesses seeking to understand better how their customers think and what they want. But it's almost more interesting to read it for the glimpses it gives of your own spending habits.
Emotional Drive of the Buyer.......2007-02-22
One of the best book I have read in the last years. Meets the consumer new trends, and gives a good inspiration to make a big transformation in sales, marketing and R&D.
Profitable look at the consumer's quest for bargains.......2007-02-17
Consumer behavior - especially in malls and restaurants - is made up of a complex matrix of facts, opinions and projections. Amid that maze, Michael J. Silverstein and John Butman deliver an interesting, in-depth guide to consumption. The authors clearly define and illustrate the sport of "treasure hunting," and then apply that term to an analysis of shoppers' activities in a variety of industries, stores and markets. Shoppers who read this will understand how and why they fill up their carts; businesses will understand why shoppers select certain stores and online portals. The book's greatest strengths are the profiles of actual consumers in the U.S. and abroad. The personal stories are fascinating, if sometimes repetitive. We highly recommend this book to consumers, retail executives and restaurant managers. It's a must-read for all.
A failed sequel.........2007-01-10
"Trading Up: Why Consumers Want New Luxury Goods" of 2004 was a very good (and very successful) book. Mr Silverstein had to come up with a sequel.
"Treasure Hunt" is the result, and its purpose is to address quite the opposite phenomenon; it could have been titled "Trading Down".
I think that most of the book's "stories" (or "case studies" if one wants a loftier description) are too loquacious and they very rarely make the author's point.
This book is, as most sequels, a let-down.
Needs an Editor, and Maybe the Editor Would Take a Pass.......2007-01-03
Over the last couple of years, I've read a number of Harvard MBA-type books on marketing and strategy, and I have to say this was the least useful, by far. Generally, I read and tip the pages that require followup in my own work--inject that sensibility into a marketing piece; develop a new piece that addresses x; develop an ongoing relationship with y consituency; etc.
I loved Trading Up and found it profoundly useful in my business. Likewise Blue Ocean Strategy. Others do great work emphasizing the key role women are playing in today's economy. Lots of tipped pages; lots of followup; lots of big benefits.
This book has its breakthrough point, which I appreciate. I shop at Costco and resale shops but don't need to, and my behavior is patterned on that of my mother. I splurge or trade up with my savings. And, as the book points out, this behavior is extremely prevalent among the upper income band. It's a lifestyle, not a poverty avoidance strategy--that's the point.
But jeez, Silverstein thanks literally 100 people at the end of the book (yes I read every page), and it reads like it. The cases don't link up with the text. Vaguely interesting stuff (e.g. material apparently trying to make the point that these trends are visible in Europe--a marketing ploy to sell books overseas?) are dropped into Chapter 2 and then fade away. You meet people; you meet companies. Some stories hang together and seem to have a purpose and some don't. And then you read the same sentence twice within a couple paragraphs. Earth to Butman--"their inner spirits first and their outer beauty second."
I sense that BCG decided they had a bunch of goodwill with a limited shelf life out there from the first book. "Let's pull a bunch of staffers together, crank for a couple of weeks, and see what we come up with."
My advice: Go to the library, take 8 minutes to read the cogent first chapter, and then "trade up" with the financial and time savings by buying five friends great lattes at the closest Peets.

OFFICIAL SOLUTION BOOK
to
A Treasure's Trove
A Treasure's Trove, written and illustrated by Michael Stadther, is the book that launched a nationwide hunt for treasure -- real treasure. For nearly a year, readers calling themselves "Trovers," enchanted by this fairy tale and its rich illustrations, solved clues that led them to twelve gold tokens hidden by the author around the continental United States. Each token, when found, was redeamable for a fabulous jewel, and each custom-designed piece was inspired by the books characters. These twelve jewels, collectively, are worth more than $1 million.
The Official Solution Book reveals how the puzzles are solved, how Michael Stadther developed the hunt, and how he hid the tokens. It tells the stories of the finders of these valuable tokens. And it shares the experiences of thousands of children, parents and grandparents who became engrossed in this story of good conquering evil, of perserving and cherishing the environment, and of the importance of caring for each other.
A Treasure's Trove -- A Nationwide Phenomenon!

Neat-O Solutions!.......2007-01-12
I bought this book as a gift for my cousin and his son, because I had bought this for myself previously. I was sorry my mother and I didn't find any of the gold tokens, but it was neat to see the explanations of the clues and read about how the finders solved the puzzles
Treasure's Trove Solution Book.......2006-07-10
The original, "A Treasure's Trove" book, was a fun treasure hunting experience for our family. The solution book gave us great insight to clues we may have overlooked. We are looking forward to the next book: "The Alchemist's Dar". What a wonderful concept written by a very talented author.
Review for "Official Solution Book for A Treasures Trove".......2005-11-02
The solution book for A Treasures Trove explained in detail about the treasure hunt for a treasures trove. It was amazing looking at the things that I overlooked, and also discouraging. "If only I had known"...etc...are still racing through my head. If you have no idea what Treasure Hunt I am talking about, it is called "A Treasure's Trove", you can order it online.
If you are able to cope with the fact that you came "this close", then I would recommend this solution book. If you cant, then dont read it. I would recommend trying (even after the hunt is over) to solve the puzzle.

Fun, But So-So Writing.......2005-11-03
I remember enjoying the Encyclopedia Brown solve-them-yourself mysteries when I was a kid. But as an adult, I'd prefer to see kids reading something with a little more writing quality. No characterizations, no drama, cliche descriptions -- couldn't someone do this genre better?

Encyclopedia Brown does it again! This book was just as entertaining as the others! I originally bought this book for my nephew (10 years) and I ended up reading most of it with him! Needless to say, he loved it and so did I! He now wants to read more about Encyclopedia Brown and I can't wait to buy them for him!
Book Description
Adding an extra dimension of fun to a Walt Disney World visit, the more than 100 treasure hunts in this book lead visitors to the many hidden gems in the theme parks, water parks, and resort hotels. The hunts are suitable for all ages and treasure-seeking abilities, from children and first-time visitors to eagle-eyed park veterans. Clues are presented in the form of questions and are ranked by difficulty level, with a challenge for everyone. Answers are provided in “locked treasure chests” in the back of the book. Readers must open the sealed "treasure chest" pages to reveal the answers, thus inhibiting peeking or accidental reading.

It's Worth It!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-10-17
My husband and I are avid Disney goers, visiting at least once a year. We always try to find something different to do when wer're there (i.e. tours around the parks). This book has provided that new fun thing to do on our next trip. It asks a lot of questions and you really have to hunt for answers. There are differnet levels of hunts so it's great for kids, teenagers, or kids at heart. Enjoy!!!!!!
Wonderful!.......2007-10-14
This book is a necessity for anyone who visits WDW. We have been 11 times now, and thought we knew everything. WRONG. We had more much fun on this last trip using this book than ever before.
If you look around at WDW, everyone is hurrying, running, to get to the "next" thing. What you may not realize is that every step IS the next thing.
WDW is not just about shows and rides. It's all the little details that create the whole fun effect. We had never even stopped to read all the handprints in front of The Great Movie Ride, examine the fountain in front of Muppet Labs, notice all the details inside Country Bear Jamboree, or a million other things. Treaure hunting gave this trip so much more and really made this trip more "magical" than ever.
PassPorter's Treasure Hunts at Walt Disney World.......2007-09-07
I'm sure this is a perfectly wonderful book and I'll give it 5 stars based on how well it's written and how much fun it looks like it would be. However, I bought this book along with the Hidden Mickey's book and we soon learned it was impossible to do both, so we chose looking for Hidden Mickeys. I think the Treasure Hunts would be a lot of fun for large families, church or school groups.
Amazing Guide.......2007-04-10
This lets you see the ins and outs of Disney. It lets you look at Disney in a different way. It's just fun and it's great. So it's great fun!!!!!
Great fun!.......2007-02-12
Can't wait to take this book on our next trip to WDW! We have been to WDW 78 times in the past 10 years and we still couldn't answer most of the questions at home -- so it will be a treasure-hunting experience for us!

Great way to engage the kids.......2007-09-09
This little gem helped make our trip to Italy worth every penny. The kids and grownups were engaged, counting winged lions, feeding pigeons, tasting espresso and saying "buongiorno" to get treasure hunt points. My 7 year old still remembers the 42 winged lions she spotted to win the treasure hunt. This is a great way to enrich the kids experience and make it memorable. I highly recommend this book and Treasure Hunt Florence for anyone traveling to Italy with kids.

Perfect book for the Kids!! Compact Size was key!!.......2006-04-17
Our kids (we have a 8 and 11 year old) had a blast using Treasure Hunt Venice as their own guide to Venice. They were motivated to explore and the book was designed perfectly for kids. The idea of a scavenger hunt was exactly what Rick Steve's Venice 2006 book suggests you do to keep the kids interested in city.
Great family fun! A must for your next trip........2006-03-19
This book itself is a treasure! What a great idea: a child-targeted travel experience. Our son was so engaged in sightseeing and exploring. He had lots of fun with the hunts/questions. Even when we weren't on a specific search, he kept referring to the book so we had to keep it handy all the time. In fact, we all had fun with it.
Fabulous fun for kids --- and their parents.......2006-03-17
We used the Mouchawar's clever Treasure Hunt during a recent trip to Venice and the kids absolutely loved it. The kids studied the questions prior to our arrival (using a map to determine where in Venice would need to go to maximize their points) and pursued the treasure hunt with remarkable tenacity. In addition to asking for factual information, many of the questions require that the children reflect on what they see and articulate their impressions or ideas. Each outing became an adventure, and they learned a tremendous amount about Venice in the process. The format of the book makes it easy for each child to carry his own in a backpack or fanny pack. I wish we had similar guides for every vacation!
