According to Bob Burford, broaching midlife doesn't have to be a crisis. In fact, in Half Time, Burford insists that it is actually an opportunity to begin the better half of life. The first half is busy with "getting and gaining, earning and learning," doing what you can to survive, while clawing your way up the ladder of success. The second half of life should be about regaining control, calling your own shots, and enjoying "God's desire ... for you to serve him just by being who you are, by using what he gave you to work with." What lies between the two is "halftime." Buford argues that whether you are a millionaire, a manager, or a teacher, you will one day have to transition from the struggle for success to the quest for significance. Halftime, then, is a quiet time of deliberate decision-making, restructuring, and passionate contemplation of your heart's deepest desires. Buford's writing is grounded in the real-life experience of success and failure, and most poignantly, the death of his son. While he has led a very successful life in the eyes of the world, Buford's personal stories reveal that his faith in Christ is his central priority. Instead of a transition to be feared, Buford makes midlife an introspective journey of abundance that will unleash God's best for you. --Jill Heatherly

Bob Buford does an execellent job in presenting not only the changes in ones life but also possible courses to take!

5 out of 5 stars This book hit home!.......2007-03-28

When I decided to take an early retirement from my company of 30+ years, a friend recommended that I read this book. I couldn't believe how it hit the mark with me. Granted, I am what I would consider to be a 'spiritual person', but aside from that, Buford really hit the nail on the head with many of the feelings that I had been experiencing of late.. That is, the entire notion of putting 'significance' ahead of 'success' in life. Isn't that what everyone would want to leave as his/her legacy?
I enjoyed the book, and found it to be relevant, interesting, and a fast read. I recommend it for anyone who is moving into a mid-50s 'retirement' period, sorting out the opportunities that are out there.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-02-11

If you're looking for a life of significance after success, or even if you feel you have had very little success, this book will make you significant in serving others. A must-read. Get it now, and don't delay. It will change your life.

5 out of 5 stars Half Time.......2007-01-17

An excellent resource for anyone in career transitioning...insightful and thought provoking while reassuring to the reader that much of the anxiety associated with career transitions is normal. Self reflection and devoted planning time are required to get the absolute most out of this book.

2 out of 5 stars Concept vs. Applicability.......2006-08-09

This was a nice story about a guy making a journey from success to significance in the second half of his life. Unfortunately, most of us don't have the financial resources to do things the way he did them. Conceptually, what he is saying is appropriate. However, most of us don't have the millions that allow for extended time off to reflect, seek the help of consultants, conduct low cost probes, etc.

If you're looking for a nice inspirational story of one man's journey in faith, this is a good read. If you're looking for some strong Biblical insights on which to make some life change, this is not the book to use for that.

As Alicia stages her take over to become an alpha, her and her BFF, Massie drift apart and the two find themselves in a raging, war of who has the better hold on their Clique. This book tells an amazing story of what a clique can do to crush you if you get in their way. After this book I was definitely hooked to the Clique series.

5 out of 5 stars Best Friends for Never .......2007-05-23

Best Friends for Never is the best book I have ever read! The clique in this book consists of four girls, Massie, the clique leader, Alicia, who trys to be independent, Dylan, the weight watcher, and Kristen, who competes for guys. Then there is Claire. She wants to be in, but she is still out of the clique, at least for now. The school has a uniform competition to decide what the uniform will lood like. Will Kristen betray her best friends just to win the competition? Will she break away from the clique? Find out when you read Best Friends for Never

5 out of 5 stars Best Friends For Never <3.......2007-05-23

This book is the sequel to the Clique. In this book, Massie finds out that a girl from school is hosting the FIRST "girl-boy party". Massie wants to be the girl that people remember, so Massie hosts the first "girl-boy party" before the other girl does. At the party things didn't go too well with the 4 best friends. Alicia started hanging out with a girl named Olivia. Kirsten and Dylan were fighting over a boy who didn't like either of them. Then Massie was just stuck in the middle of it. After the party Alicia didn't hang out with the other three girls anymore, and the girls started to hate her. I thought this was a good book because it kept you interested the whole time, and I can always relate to all of the girls!

5 out of 5 stars Book review.......2007-03-30

Massie Block is the most popular seventh grader at OCD and to prove it she throws the first boy/girl Halloween party even if it was somebody else's idea. However, her parents are making her throw the party with the wannabe new girl, Claire, from Orlando that is staying in her guesthouse. Also, they are making her invite the entire seventh grade! The story starts off with Claire and Massie making a bet, Massie can't go shopping and Clair can't were the same outfit twice. After Massie and her three popular best friends Dylan, Kristen, and Alicia find their costumes, Massie wears the Dirty Devil Halloween costume to school on Halloween, and brings Dylan's, Alicia's and Kristen's for them to change into but purposely forgets Claries. After everyone saw there costumes they wanted to be just like them, so also cut there shirts and wore short skirts. However, the principal was furious and decided the school needed uniforms. Massie suggests to the fashion teacher that the school holds a design contest and who ever has the best idea will be the uniform designer. Dylan decides to ditch the clique and work on the project with her new friend Olivia. After the contest is held, both there groups end up being the final two. The results are announced and Dylan's team wins. Massie noticed that the nametags had been switched and really they had won. She decides to do nothing about it and wait for the right moment to get back at her. "Best Friends for Never" by Lisi Harrison is an excellent book I would definitely recommend!

One of the reasons I would recommend this novel is because it deals with real life situations that typical middle school kids face everyday such as friend ship, popularity, and crushes. For example Clair is having a hard time fitting in after just moving also the characters faces difficult events like when Kirsten and Dylan like the same guy and Massie and Clair make a bet.

Another reason enjoyed this book was because it taught the reader to keep your friends close. At the party, Dylan made a new friend Olivia and hung with her ever since. The pretty committee, as several people at school called them, always had a sleepover every Friday. One Friday Dylan said she needed to hang out with Olivia so they could finish their uniform designs. Nobody had missed the sleepover in over a year, and the Clique has very angered that she ditched them. Clair also almost became part of the group and decided to ditch her first real and true friend she had met and OCD, Layne Abelby.

Another reason I liked this book was because it was hilarious! One of the funniest parts was when Todd, Clair's little brother who is only ten, started to have a crush on Massie. He always talked about how she was his baby and the most beautiful girl in the world. It was also funny how Todd was the one who stole Massie's first kiss when she was hoping it would be Cam Fisher who secretly liked Clair. The Girls also do mean and funny things to humiliate one another all the time. Massie always has rude but unique comebacks to say to people especially Clair.

Best Friends for Never is an excellent well written novel that I would highly recommend. They will want to keep reading to see what dramatic event happens next to Massie and the rest of her friends! If you want a book about sneaky plans and how some girls will do anything to become popular I would defiantly recommend this novel.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

One of the questions I hear most often from people who dream of a new career is "am I too old to get started?" Susan Crandell's book gives hope to those who dream of starting a new career but wonder if it is too late. What matters more than your age is your ability to do the job and to sell yourself to the people who can hire you. This book offers real life examples of people who have dared to go after their dreams. It gives uplifting advice from a wise author who has been there herself. Can't decide which is more memorable: the extraordinary life stories of mid-life re-tooling and re-commitment to life and self (including the author's own), or the author's narrative thread: full of useful data, wise synthesis and uplifting commentary. A must for anyone approaching or just saying good-by to mid-life, however YOU define it.

4 out of 5 stars Thinking About Tomorrow: Reventing Yourself at Midlife.......2007-02-28

This was a nice book with great stories to provoke one to think about the possibilities at Midlife. While most of the stories were of value, they were stories of those that had a comfortable amount of savings/retirement built up enabling them to make these moves. Certainly, it is desirable to be at that point in ones life where they can afford to stop having a level of income and make the changes that are described in this book.

A worthy set of stories for those who are financially comfortable.

5 out of 5 stars This book inspired me............2007-01-08

Susan Crandell's Thinking About Tomorrow is essential reading for anyone who has ever thought, "There's gotta be something more." Crandell found 45 real-life heroes--all over 40--who stopped worrying about what other people thought long enough to discover their hearts' desires, and re-engineer their lives.

Some of her heroes are offbeat (a man who found the courage to become a woman, a fitness instructor who turned into a professional Celine Dion impersonator), some predictable (the couple who had a baby in their 50s, the businessman who dropped out to start another business), and some are just plain passionate (like the hair colorist who has turned himself into a true Iron Man). But in each story, Crandell really nails the essence of what makes some of us ripe for reinvention, and how to smooth away the bumps on life's new path. After reading this, I'll never call those turning points anything as dreary as "midlife crises" again.

You just over heard some gossip about a person that you know! Do you spread the gossip some more? If you think you might, then this might be the book for you!
Alicia Riveria is tired of being Massie Block's beta and always being the second choice or second hottest - so she decides to start a clique of her own. Well once Massie finds this out, she goes ballistic! With the race between the two, to tell who's the hottest or who's better, the girls realize that they loose the most important thing that they had. Friendship.
The best part of the book was the climax when all the gossip between the girls, exploded and revealed itself, through a cat fight. Then when they're told to stop, they stat to laugh about the whole scene and then become friends again! It's a happy ending.
As the reviewer of this book, I would say the main idea is that friendship s more important than popularity or attention `cause being popular has lots of responsibilities, but friendship involves just being yourself.
I liked the way this book switched from all the girls' different perspectives and they talked about their true feelings in their perspectives. What I would change about this book is the drama. There seems to be too much drama between the girls that the book doesn't quite, then, seem completely real, but yet its still very interesting. I would recommend this book to teenage girls between the ages 12-18, because it can help anyone of them, realize how important friendship really is and how unimportant being popular is. Overall this book is very good and I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars the clique revenge of the wanabes.......2007-05-23

I absolutley loved this book so much! There are many things that go wrong though. The girls think that nothing could go wrong between their strong friendships, until one day it all falls apart. Alicia was hanging out with Olivia way to much. The other girls knew that there wasn't enought room for her in their clique. Alicia had to make a decision to whether or not to stay with the clique, who had been her best friends forever, or stay with her new bestfriend Olivia. The clique planned a mean revenge for Alicia to make her want to change her mind about being best friends with Olivia, who was a "loser beyond repair," and not "the pretty committee."

When i was reading this book i could not put it down for one second. There was so much action going on it was really hard to put it down. The book was definitely, without a doubt in my mind a page turner. This book shows real life situations. I can relate to almost everything that happens in this book. This book is a great book for girls who are going into middle school, or who are in middle school

5 out of 5 stars Revenge of the Wannabes Review.......2007-05-06

When Alicia Rivera cheats by switching ballad boxes at the OCD fashion design with her partner Olivia, Massie Block her former best friend decides she needs to get revenge. After dance rehearsal Alicia talked to some of the girls decided she needs make other friends too other than Massie. They convinced her to hold Friday night sleepovers, even though Massie always invites her popular friends over every Friday. When she finds out she is furious and decides she doesn't want Alicia to hangout with them anymore. When Alicia and Olivia go to the Teen People Interview for winning the contest, the lady there asks them if they want to model for the magazine instead. They agree and she said they are able to bring six other friends. When Massie hears this she calls the lady and tells them that they will be the others. In the end the go to the photo shoot and it turns out a total disaster because they all get into a fight, but after that the make up and are good friends again. The Revenge of the Wannabes is a funny, interesting novel I would definitely recommend.

One of the reasons I liked this novel is because it is easy to understand and keep interest in. The story dealt real life situations that happen to teen's everyday like friendships, crushes, and popularity. Such as Alicia being tired of being pushed around by Massie, wanting to be more popular, and have other friends. Also Clair who is kind of new to Westchester and lives in Massie's guesthouse is just starting to feel popular and Massie's friend.

Another thing I liked is the characters and how they acted. Alicia Rivera wanted to be independent and more popular yet she still wanted to be exactly like Massie. She did similar things like Friday night sleepover, start her own clique, and even find look alike new best friends. Also I liked the Teen People fashion editor, Lucinda because she didn't care and was cool about everything even when she found out Olivia and Alicia cheated. She always made sure everybody and there outfits look perfect. There is also Massie, who very popular and used to getting everything she wants.

Lastly, I liked this book because of the unique well written plot. The book is mostly about revenge for Massie to get back at Alicia for starting her own clique and cheating on the fashion contest. At one point in the book Massie and her friends painted a mural describing Alicia's backstabbing then showed it to her that sent her sobbing out the door. There were several twists and unexpected parts such as when Clair is accepted into the clique and Alicia has Todd, Clair's younger brother, spy on Massie's sleepover.

Revenge of the Wannabes is a wonderful book that I would highly recommend. It was fun to read about events that I could relate too such as the drama that happens to normal teenagers. Also I liked the characters such as Kristen, who doesn't have very much money is still really good friends with the popular girls in school, and they have kept her secret for a long time. The reader will have fun trying to imagine what it would be like to be in the position of people in the book such as how Massie felt when she found out Alicia backstabbed her.

5 out of 5 stars there coming for revenge.......2007-04-05

The characters of Revenge Of The Wannabes are Clair Lyons, Kristen Gregory, Dylan Marvil, Alicia Rivera, Massie Block and Oliva. Massie Block is the most popular girl at school but Alicia want's to be more popular then her, so Alicia and the other girls at the dance studio starting talking about the sleepover that Massie Block always has and they came up with an idea that Alicia should have a sleepover of her own. so when Alicia got home she thought about it for a while. She went up to her room and checked her messages on her phone and she had messages from her dance studio friends and from Massie and those group of friends. Alicia was really confused she didn't know if she should have her own sleepover or go to Massie's. Later in the book it was a Teen People design contest Massie really won but before judging Alicia and Oliva changed the vote boxes so the 2 girls went to Teen People and they got to see all of the latest clothes and even got to take something home.

5 out of 5 stars A Favorite!.......2007-03-30

Alicia had cheated in the OCD fashion contest and now Massie feels that the revenge is long past due, and she will stop at nothing to crush Alicia's perfect record. After dance rehearsal Alicia was talking to the other girls and decided that there was too much "Massie" in her life, and the other girls talked her into starting sleepovers on Friday night. Massie owned Fridays and that course of action was not an option, but she could not refuse the wide eyes staring in on her. As the day of her Teen People magazine interview grew closer Alicia continued to wonder if Massie knew what she and Olivia had done, but when the day of the interview came and Massie still did not say anything she thought that she was in the clear, but in truth Massie knew exactly what had happened. Then Massie found out that at the magazine interview Alicia and Olivia had been offered a modeling job, Massie decided to tell the people that Alicia was lying, but when she did all the people said was that they did not even care. Massie was so mad at Alicia that she invited her over and she had a mural of her on the wall and explained its contents to Alicia and sent her running out. Then one day at a Briarwood soccer game Cam convinced Alicia to ask Claire out for him. Alicia told Claire the news and said that they should go on a double date and Claire agreed to go. While they were there Alicia had Todd spy on Massie's sleepover. The next day Alicia said that unless they where a scarf showing that they were in her group she would tell everyone their secrets. They all wore the scarves and they all went with Alicia to the shoot and there they all got in a fight after breaking down from all the pressure that had been building up during the past month. After that situation they became friends again and Claire was admitted to the Pretty Committee. I really enjoyed this book and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys gossip and tough social situations.

I enjoyed this book because it depicted how cliques and popularity affect social structure and how people act. At the beginning Alicia wanted to have her own sleepover and be the leader of a group, but Massie completely rejected the idea because she thought that people would like Alicia more than they liked her. Another time was when Alicia found out all of her ex-friends' secrets and she used that as leverage to get them to see things from her point of view. Another point was at the very end when everyone let out the anger built up inside of him or her and they started fighting. The fight was Massie's friends versus Alicia's friend and finally at the end they made up and continued the photo shoot for Teen People.

The book details the life of the Clique over the course of about one month and it is amazing how people changed and stayed the same. Kendra, Massie's mother, was always very strict about keeping everything clean and perfect, but after she started reading with a book club she started to .et go and was not as strict. She even let the girls paint the old horse barn. Another person that changed was Claire, because at the beginning she was quietly in love with Cam, but was never confident enough to really go out with him. After he did, though, she really liked it and found another thing to like in Westchester. Finally it was Massie who changed the most. In the beginning she was always rude and jealous towards Claire because she had a crush on Cam as well, so she was always telling Claire to break up with Cam because she was always so mad that someone had beaten her at something. In the end she allowed Claire to go out with Cam and she developed a crush on Derrington.

Another thing that I appreciated in this book were the different characters and how they acted. I especially liked Lucinda, the editor for Teen People because she did not care too much about anything or even that Olivia and Alicia had cheated in the contest, but she did care about how the other people dressed around her as well as her clients. Another character was Alicia Rivera and she was tired of sitting in Massie's shadow and decided to be independent and start her own group. Of course there is Massie Block, and she is an ambitious seventh grader that is used to everything going her way and getting all she wanted.

This was on of my favorite books because of the characters like Kristen, a girl who does not have very much money and yet has still made friends with the most popular girls in school, and has kept her secret over the years. I also liked this book because of how the characters changed through the progression of the story. I also liked this book because it shows how popularity really does control our life. I recommend this book to anyone that can really relate to the situations in the book.

Book Description

The social minefields most privileged middle-school girls drive the over-the-top drama in this addictive new book, set in suburban New York City's Westchester County. Massie Block: With her glossy brunette bob and Whitestrip smile, Massie is the uncontested ruler of The Clique and the rest of the social scene at Octavian Country Day, an exclusive private school in Westchester, New York. Dylan Marvil: Massie's second in command who divides her time between sucking up to Massie and sucking down Atkins shakes to try to get rid of the extra fifteen pounds that won't seem to leave her hips alone. Alicia Rivera: As sneaky as she is beautiful, Alicia floats easily under adult radar because she seems so 'sweet.' Would love to take Massie's throne one day. Just might do it. Kristen Gregory: She's been dying to fit in ever since her parents went broke. She's smart, hardworking and will insult you to tears faster than you can say 'scholarship kid.' And then there's Claire Lyons, the new girl in two-year old GAP overalls from Florida, who is clearly not Clique material. The only problem is that Claire's family is staying in the guest house on the Blocks' massive estate while they look for a new home! Claire's future looks worse than a bad Prada knockoff. But with a little luck and a lot of scheming, Claire might just come up smelling like Chanel Mademoiselle....

I thought the book was very interesting. It made you want to keep reading. This book was my favorite so far in the series but it left you hanging in the end I can't wait til I get to read the next one. Lisi Harrison is a great writer for teens.

5 out of 5 stars Sealed with a Diss.......2007-09-10

This book was absolutley fabulous. I love how Lisi Harrison keeps you on the edge and anticipating the next word (or in Massie's case, a clever comeback!) These books are fun filled and action packed, a great read for anyone 10 or older. I recomend this series to everyone, and I cannot wait for the next book!

4 out of 5 stars More More MORE!.......2007-08-17

I loved this book, but I hated the fact that it ended like it did and the next one doesn't come out til next year. That sux! But the book itself was )as most cliques are) drama filled and intense. The life of an alpha is so not as great as it seems. And the poor girls and their crushes I mean you have GOT to feel sorry for them.

This story takes you on a journey that ended quite abrubtly, and will begin again in February 2008!!! Man I can't wait!!!!!♥

5 out of 5 stars Another ah-mazing Clique book!.......2007-08-06

I have really enjoyed ALL of the books in the Clique series. I am a middle school teacher, and have shared my love of reading with many girls via the Clique books. These books are perfect for a hesistant reader- they are so engaging and fun to read. They are also age-appropriate, unlike some other series that are marketed to young girls.
Massie and the Pretty Committee do not disappoint in the 8th book of this series. The dialog is snappy as always, and left me looking forward to the 9th book!

4 out of 5 stars Esoteric and Enjoyable.......2007-09-16

Someone once told me that when The Name of the Rose was first published, it was the most-bought and least read book of its time. This I can believe. While The Name of the Rose is a spellbinding mystery, it is also dense and perhaps too pleased with its own erudition to make a big popular splash.

In the middle-ages, an elder monk and his young assistant journey to an Italian monastery to attend an important conference on church policy as the inquisition and concerns of heresy rage. The monastery, however, is shortly beset by a series of murders as a number of the monks turn up dead by means various and distressing. It is up to the elder monk and his assistant to discover the culprit and the root of the crimes - which seem to be linked to the monastery's well-appointed library.

Eco here creates a world that is believable and fascinating, and perfectly captures the middle-ages in his prose. However, to truly enjoy this book you must have at least a bit of a background in medieval history and the pressing issues of the day; if not, a lot of this book will go over the casual reader's head (unfortunately). Still, quite a ride, and recommended for the determined reader.

5 out of 5 stars perseverance.......2007-06-09

Not being fluent in Italian I had to read this book in translation. I first got the english one (later it was also translated in Greek). What gave me a really hard time reading it, was the fact that the english translator had left the latin parts untranslated. Were they assuming that we all know Latin?. I know that there is now a book named the Key to the Name of the Rose which provides those translations but fifteen years ago when I first attempted to read this book it was unavailable. Does all that sound whiny and bitchy? Perhaps it is, but if I had let myself be discouraged by those difficulties I would have missed out on a truly superb book. This one has so many layers, so many levels on which it may be read that it could in my opinion be highly enjoyed by both the most profound lover of religious philosophy and the most avid fan of Sherlock Holmes-like "whodunits". Not to mention that the description of the library embodies every bibliophile's wet dream. And referring to some previous reviewers' comments that it supplies too much unnecessary information I will only mention that as Kavafy says sometimes the journey to a destination is more important to achieving the goal itself. So trust me and stick with this book to the end and you will not be disappointed. I most heartily commend it

4 out of 5 stars Can be a difficult read.......2007-05-16

This book had a fantastic story and was rich in characterisation and setting however the book often used difficult and rare words, latin and introduced a vast array of characters which at times was hard to keep track of.

5 out of 5 stars Medieval history in technicolor .......2007-05-06

This will be a difficult novel for anyone that does not have an academic background in the Middle Ages. Luckily, I have spent the past 3 years preparing with excellent surveys such as Norman Cantor (The Civilization of the Middle Ages), Joseph Strayer (The Middle Ages, 395-1500) and Morris Bishop (The Middle Ages). There is hardly a sentence that does not connect with a scholarly topic on the Middle Ages, which should come as no surprise as Eco was foremost a medieval scholar before he wrote this his first novel. The first 100 pages of the novel are like reading a medieval manuscript, trying to piece together what is known of Medieval history and figuring out what Eco is talking about, not unlike what happens with the characters in the novel. With that said, the novel can still be enjoyed by anyone without a medieval history background because of the excellent plot and Gothic atmosphere. The novel needs extensive annotations to fully appreciate (such as The Key to The Name of the Rose, although I found it lacking in many ways).

'Rose' works on many layers and can be approached from many perspectives. It's impossible to cover all the permutations in a single reading, indeed I have read it only once primarily a "reading for the plot" to understand the sequence of events. The movie helps in this regard, although it has some substantial "Hollywood" changes at the end and is much less subtle and interesting - recommend reading the novel first.

Most valuable for me was Eco brought to life the Guelphs vs Ghibellines dispute in color, shape and form that only fiction can achieve. It's the difference between intellectually understanding history versus emotionally experiencing, and for this alone the novel is priceless, the best of what historical fiction can achieve.

4 out of 5 stars difficil but enjoyable.......2007-03-29

I am not going to include the plot and story of the novel, since it has already been done by many reviewers, quiet eloquently.
I finished this book in a grand total of 5 days which i unfortunately did not have. I say this not ostentatiously, nor do i mean that i skipped many parts. I read every thing. But to read this book, and to thoroughly enjoy it, one needs ample time. Again, as already stated before in other reviews, it is a difficult read especially if the reader is a "novice". 1. because i openly admit that i needed a dictionary( which i loved) and 2. because a reader has to distinguish between important passages that actually contribute to the story, and some passages that are merely there to dissuade the reader from attempting to brave this epic book.
The book is great, and is highly recommendable but i also had certain reservations. I did not understand why Mr. Umberto insisted on repeating many things in the novel. I can see why he would go over certain things to accentuate their importance, but certain times, i found it annoying as the same topic was expressed, only in different ways.
I dare say this is a pseudo mystery book. As Umberto himself says, the mystery in the book is only half , if even, as important to the actual story. The mystery, though, also plays an important part in giving this novel an actual shape.
Over all, excellent read. Read and revel in your intellectual glory.

Howard and Marika explore topics that a near and dear to us, that we must pay attention to if we wish to make this journey look like what we have always hoped for. Sometimes we all need a map to get us where we want to be!

5 out of 5 stars A Purpose-Filled Life.......2005-06-14

The book, Too Young to Retire, as well as the Stone's web site and book study groups, is their effort to teach people how to live a life filled with purpose, rather than the emptiness of so many retirees' lives.

The book begins with an introduction to the Stones and how they arrived at the attitude that they did. It then dives right into the largest problem that retirees face - money. If you ask most people approaching retirement age what they fear most about retirement, running out of money is tied with poor health. The Stones tackle the problem face on, correctly stating the "it is much less risky to worry about money than to face the volcanic changes of midlife and beyond." Once the discussion is concluded, they suggest several techniques to put money in its place, including the tried and true method of keeping a daily record of how you spend your money.

Not content with tackling retirement, the Stones next look at the world of work and why work isn't working. They cite many of the same ills that books such as Take Back Your Time discuss: too little vacation, too much pressure, too little fulfillment and more. The book quotes Rutgers University's Heldrich Center for Workforce Development study, "Most workers see their 'retirement' not as a time for leisure and travel, but as an opportunity to do fulfilling work, and find avocation in what they do." The end of the chapter offers methods to work through to who you really are. These are good starting places, but the more hard-core 9-5ers might need a little more work. The Stone's suggestion to hire a personal coach, even for a little while, is a good one.

If retirement is in your future, this book is a great place to begin the process.

2 out of 5 stars Save Your Money and Skip This One.......2004-01-30

Unless you are a far-left political idealist; "open-minded," as Mr. and Mrs. Stone say, their book offers little useful information for retirees.

5 out of 5 stars Especially for anyone over the age of 62.......2003-09-21

Motivational speaker Howard Stone and yoga teacher Marika Stone team up in Too Young To Retire: An Off-The-Road Map To The Rest Of Your Life to present readers with a down-to-earth instructional guide which is drawn from the authors own lives as a couple, their research, and several assorted case histories in order to present practical and effective alternatives to retirement -- including stimulating work and community service. From opportunities to earn money or participate in business, to volunteering one's time, to traveling for fun and profit, Too Young To Retire is an exciting and dynamic self-help instructional guide for charting new possibilities for the future and highly recommended reading -- especially for anyone over the age of 62 and not ready for the rocking chair/nursing home slide into oblivion.

5 out of 5 stars Why Retire when you can Review?.......2003-07-29

"It is already clear the 21st Century will demand more of all of us, young or old. The gifts we are given ? longevity, better health, education and financial resources ? come with responsibility. After all, we have inherited and even helped create a world that needs our wisdom, experience, and compassion now."

I've always thought the idea of retiring to be a strange concept. Why would you just give up your entire life? Even if you gave up your job should there not be other interests you would pursue, perhaps even more aggressively than your previous job.

It has been said that a "hobby" is more the man than his "job." I jest not when I say reviewing can be quite a great job/hobby.

The authors explain how to awaken the inner activist or volunteer. Chapter 5 gives a list of 101 Opportunities you could pursue. I know for sure there is a need for professional people who can keep giving their talents to society. Some of the ideas include:

Relocation Specialist
Personal Coach
Home Tutor
Travel Writer
Yoga Teacher
Massage Therapist
Author
Executive chef
Cabaret Singer

You might be thinking, "Hey, those sound more fun than what I'm doing now!" I personally like the "author" and "massage therapist" idea.

The authors explain how life is uncharted territory. How we live in a culture preoccupied with wealth. Are we not living our lives to find our deepest purpose?

The Contents Include:

Money - The Prose of Life
It's Not Working
It Is Working - Volunteering Revisited
101 Opportunities for the Open-Minded
Toward Wellness
Radical Departures
Resources

After you read this book, you will wonder if retirement really represents the "good life."

Well if you take Chapter 7 into account and start traveling the world, this might be just the bliss your soul has been craving. I also "loved" the idea of becoming a care taker. Who would not want to go live in a beautiful location as a property manager?

This book is about living in the moment and seeing your new freedom as an excuse to do exactly what you love.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading.......2006-08-09

Great guidebook for anyone interested in "LIVING." Informative, entertaining, and motivating all in one read. Probably should be required reading for incoming freshman at University. Would have a more lasting impact and retention than most books found on traditional "required reading" lists.

5 out of 5 stars A wise, sensible book on healthy aging.......2006-06-10

A smart, common sense alternative to all the junk science books out there on how to stay young forever. Deals with all the components which go into healthy aging from finances to fitness to staying active and finding fulfillment. No magic pills or secret fountains of youth, just practical, entertaining advice. A fun, informative read. As a a legal aid hotline attorney and owner a retail medical supply and equipment business, I feel this book would be very useful for my clients and customers.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and Entertaining.......2006-05-31

I really enjoyed reading "Age Smart". It was not only full of useful and practical information but also very fun to read. The authors did a great job keeping the book light-hearted while providing solid information we can all use. I am someone who is in my late-thirties so the book spoke to me on many different levels. I understand now the importance of not only keeping my body in good shape, but that my financial and mental well-being is just as important. I recommend this book to everyone. I learned so much from reading it.

5 out of 5 stars A superbly written book.......2006-05-26

I really enjoyed the book - it was very well written and I liked the balanced approach to aging. My favorite parts were the interviews because aging means so many different things to different people. It was good to know that things like staying curious and being an optimistic person are helpful in aging well and keeping the mind sharp. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone in their 30s, 40s and 50s who want to make sure they get to their older years in the best shape possible!

5 out of 5 stars Age Smarrt- Discovering the Fountain of Youth to Midlife and Beyond.......2006-05-25

The simple fact of the matter is that we boomers are living younger--longer. In Age-Smart,Discovering the Fountain of Youth to Midlife and Beyond, Jeffrey Rosensweig and Betty Liu look at such issues as finances, health and well being, as well as numerous other issues that affect life expectancy. With an abundance of `sensory' caffeine that rejuvenates the spirit, such noted individuals as Former President Jimmy Carter, his wife Rosalynn, Helen Gurley Brown and myriad host of others, will force readers to re-think how they `see' the elderly. With such fun chapters as Just Say No to Pink Pants, Age Smart is chockfull of easy-to-use tips that supports that old adage,`that age is nothing but a number,' and I was humbled to be asked to be a part of what I predict will be a invaluable resource for men and women of all ages for years to come.

Book Description

Kids grown? Mortgage paid? Career topping out? What now? In My Time, best-selling author Abigail Trafford answers the questions more and more 50-somethings are asking themselves. Thanks to the longevity revolution of recent decades, today's 55- to75-year-olds are living and working longer and healthier than ever before. This generation is the first to experience the period of personal renaissance in between middle and old age-what Trafford calls "My Time." Defining this period as a whole new developmental stage in the life cycle, Trafford skillfully guides readers through the obstacles of My Time and offers them the opportunity to take full advantage of the bonus decades. With the same wit, compassion, and vivid storytelling that made Crazy Time one of the best-loved books ever written on the subject of divorce, Trafford blends personal stories with expert opinions and the latest research on adult development. From the psychoanalyst who gave up his practice to write self-help books, to the widowed mother of three who reinvented herself as a successful photographer, true tales of crisis and triumph sparkle on every page of this inspiring and insightful book. Like Gail Sheehy's Passages, My Time profoundly impacts the journey through our adult years.

3 out of 5 stars Worth Reading, But Missing Key Aspects.......2006-11-22

I was (and am) a big admirer of Trafford's earlier book on divorce, "Crazy Time." Also, I was a long-time reader of her Washington Post health care column. I am a Baby Boomer, in my middle fifties, and I was delighted to find that Trafford had written a book about the "Second Adolescence."

But I have some concerns about "My Time." The people used as examples in this book are not Baby Boomers (who are the people currently entering their forties and fifties) -- the people in "My Time" are, as shown from details in their life histories, members of the preceeding generation, the Silent Generation. They are mostly talking to Trafford while they are in their 60s and 70s about how they experienced their 50s.

Now their "looking back on it" perspective provides much useful advice to those of us now entering our 50s or in our 50s. But their life stories are so different from those of Baby Boomers that there is not enough help for us on key issues.

For example, everyone in this book -- typical Silent Generation folks -- settled down to careers and married and had children very young. Nearly all the women in the book were traditional homemakers with children who did not start careers until much later in life. Nearly all the men went directly from college to jobs as lawyers and doctors.

So their "My Time" experiences are very different from those of Baby Boomers.

Her focus on the Silent Generation also ignores the major issues Baby Boomers face as we enter our fifties -- her interviewees all have secure pensions, paid-off homes, built-in medical insurance, and their worst problem is losing too much money from their 401ks during stock market crashes.

Baby Boomers have lost their social safety nets -- many of us will have to continue working the rest of our lives because we have been deprived of secure pension plans, and unlike the Silent Generation, we will have to fight for medical care and Social Security.

Which brings me to another problem with this book -- nearly everyone in it, even the people who were born into the working class -- are now upperclass professionals, and mostly white.

Where are the middle class and the poor? where are the racial minorities? where are the gay people? where are the Asians? where is everybody else? Not everyone reaches their fifties married, white, with kids, and well-off.

I kept feeling like Trafford and I were living on different planets.

Sure, there were a few -- maybe two -- interviews with people who had started out poor -- and who also happened to be African-American/Latino -- but that made the enormous "whiteness" and "moneyied" aspects of the other interviewees glaringly apparent.

Also, while her interviewees have a few problems, they don't seem to have nearly as many as the rest of the population. Her interviewees had some divorces -- a few cases of alcoholism -- but where were the druggie kids? the people with chronic illnesses? the people in wheelchairs? the mentally retarded or autistic children? The families all seem to have perfect, college-educated, married offspring who are producing grandchildren. Most of the people who become ill in Trafford's book don't linger -- they die quickly, within about two paragraphs.

Trafford mentions her mother's and siblings' illnesses -- but almost everyone else in this book -- until they drop dead of a heart attack -- seems set to keep playing tennis forever in, say, the wealthy Georgetown area of DC.

So why should Baby Boomers buy this book? I am reading it because it has useful discussions of the emotional turbulence that set in during the fifties, a second adolescence, and how Trafford's interviewees entered and left relationships, moved to new cities, coped with (a few) deaths in their families, and started new careers.

While Boomer life trajectories and problems are very different from those of her Silent Generation interviewees, we can learn from some of their coping stratgies.

Those aspects of the book were extremely helpful, and why I have given the book three stars instead of one.

So please, Ms. Trafford, if you see this review, please rewrite the book for its second edition, and include the Baby Boomers, and include people in dire straits where things aren't working out neatly -- people who have serious chronic illnesses, or are still workingclass, etc. I'm a big fan of the rest of your work!

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable guide to those of us who have reached 50.......2006-09-17

Trafford combines her own life experience, the personal stories of many typical Americans whom she has interviewed, and psychological research in constructing this guide for the later years of life. These days, age 50 is only the beginning of life for many people whose children are grown, whose careers are set, and whose health is good. Many Americans will have 30 years or more in this new stage of life. Not all of
