ASIN:0553371312 Getting Past No. This is an easy to read book for those who wish to understand more than the 'Win-Win, Win-Lose, etc, type of negotiation. It gives great background when one is trying to iniate a student into the area of negotation. I was able to give short, clear explanations to my daughter, who periodially wanted to know what book I was reading. If negotiation is taught in schools, this one should be a text book.

Great book to introduce negotiatation to beginners.......2007-09-25

Getting Past No is the follow up book to Getting To Yes from William Ury. The book provides a simple negotiating method that is easy to understand and follow. Simply put, Ury's method is to

1) "Go to the balcony" - basically remove emotion from the negotiating process to ensure you can look objectively at the issue.

2)"Step to their side" - dig deeper into why the other side is saying no and brainstorm solutions to solve the underlying issue.

3)"Reframe" - instead of making the negotiation an "us vs. them" scenario, make it a "we" situation where you're trying to solve the problem together.

4)"Build them a golden bridge" - in a nutshell, let the other side save face.

5)"Use power to educate" - once you've gotten this far do bully you're way to close the deal. Instead, answer the other sides questions and help them build consensus with their stakeholders by educating them how the deal is good for them.

Overall, this is a very quick read and is not intended to be an all encompassing book on negotiating. It is great for beginners to learn this type of negotiating and it is highly effective for all types of situations. It is a must have in your business library!

Got to Yes.......2007-09-07

This is the sequel to "Getting to Yes" by Ury. I liked the first book better. This one tackles the issue of what you can do when the other party really does not want to cooperate, while "Getting to Yes" assumes a greater willingness to collaborate. The book is okay, just not great. If you trying to get a basic education on negotiation, reading both books would be a good start.

A Good Skill Builder.......2007-08-07

I found this book helpful because it is concise, skill based (that is I gained skills, not just theory) and provides real world examples. Not as deep or scientific as Crucial Confrontations, but a perfect sized resource that I will refer to over and over.

A British journalist who has lived 20 years in Spain, married and raising his 2 children in Madrid, the author investigates, reveals and muses upon Spanish culture, history and the forces of the "two Spains" as they come together, or rub against each other, in forming the modern Spanish world. A fascinating look at Spain, its subcultures from the Basques to the Catalans to flamenco to the Galicians, to drug culture to tourism and the very difficult and delicate process of choosing to forget the differences of the Spanish Civil War and Franco's regime in order to move forward in a country that was once the most powerful on earth.
I like Spain and its history. This is one of the very best insights into modern Spain. Highly recommended.

A Pale Secret.......2007-05-22

A liberal British newspaper reporter's hit and miss attempt at a book explaining Spain (his nearly adopted country) to us outsiders. Some hits (like how modern Spain handles the dark legacy of Franco) are offset by a number of misses.

Historical facts, or guesses as to historical facts, get thrown in as space fillers; events that catch Mr. Tremlett's fancy are highlighted, whether reflective of the whole Spanish society or not; the level of writing is often barely above that of a talented reporter on deadline. The final meandering chapter entitled "Moderns and Ruins", especially, cries out for editing.

Great book about a fascinating country.......2007-05-19

This is a great journalistic account of the social and political changes that have transformed Spain up to the present day. Tremlett discusses the country's past and present in fairly equal measure. He begins by looking at the legacies of the Spanish Civil War, discussing how only in the past decade has the full scale of the atrocities that took place come to light. He discusses how Spaniards whose relatives were killed by the Francoists have pushed in recent years for their relatives to be given decent burials. He also writes an interesting chapter on Franco's overall legacy, arguing that after his death and the country's transition to democracy he has been largely purged from public discourse. Despite this collective amnesia that he identifies, Tremlett points out that the same left-right cleavage that drove the war still lurks below the surface of Spanish society. The book also contains chapters on the Basque, Catalan, and Galician regions. Tremlett provides very insightful analysis of the origins of and main forces behind Basque and Catalan nationalism, while his chapter on Galicia details that region's emergence as a conduit for Columbian cocaine. One of my favorite chapters looked at gender relations in Spain, in which Tremlett provides some very amusing anecdotes that reveal contrasts between Spain and his native Britain. This chapter also discusses Tremlett's quest to understand the paradox of how a country can be so awash in brothels (which, he reports, 1/4 of Spanish men visited) yet relatively conservative in terms of the sexual mores of its people.

Other subjects covered here include Spain's emergence as a global tourism magnet (and the corruption that has often emerged alongside it) and the 2004 Madrid train bombing, which indirectly led to the defeat of the ruling party in the elections several days later. This was an interesting chapter, in which Tramlett looked at the ways in which the main parties tried to capitalize on this tragedy for political gain. Overall, I found Tremlett to be a very keen analyst of social and political relations, and there weren't really any weak chapters. For instance, I considered skipping a chapter on flamenco music, not being particularly interested in the musical form itself, but the chapter ended up including a fascinating discussion of the social history of Spain's gypsies.

Overall, I would heartily recommend this book to anybody interested in Spanish history, culture, and/or politics. I would NOT recommend it to those expecting more of a travel guide type of book; although Tremlett does visit and write evocatively about numerous regions, such descriptions are not the main substance of this book. If I had to make one minor criticism, it is that the chapters themselves were often not tightly organized. For example, the chapter on the Basques jumps from past to present and does not really follow any sort of structure. This wasn't really a problem for me, because Tremlett writes well and never bored me, but it might be a problem to some. Another minor complaint is that the book doesn't include a map, which might have been useful for readers like me who aren't intimately familiar with Spain's geography. Overall, though, I think that this is social and political journalism at its finest, and anybody wishing to learn more about this fascinating country could do worse than to start here!

Spain's a Fun Country to Visit.......2007-04-29

The first time tht I went to Spain the country was still under Franco. When getting off the plane, every arriving passenger was photographed. This set a tone that made you never forget where you were. Now going to Spain is like going to any other country. There is no problem going from one city to another. The people are friendly to Americans. The food, trains, hotels, highways are all good.

This book looks underneath these obvious outward trappings to the held over anguish from the Franco time. He also looks further backwards to the regional conflicts with Basque seperatists, and more recently to the Islamist bombers who killed 190 people using bomb attacks in 2004.

Spain remains a little bit different than the rest of Western Europe. Mr. Tremlett has lived in Spain for twenty years and has done an excellent job of bringing together the history and the current situation to explain the current country that is Spain.

The Real Spain.......2007-04-15

Giles Tremlett has written a highly readable, incisive portrait of Spain today--its problems and its pleasures. His presentation of the manner in which Spain has chosen to deal with the aftermath of Francisco Franco's death is particularly well written and revealing. He examines how the decades of dictatorship and brutal repression have been swept under the rug of collective consciousness by Spaniards choosing not to confront it or attempt to reconcile themselves with this difficult episode in their nation's history. The author's years of closely observing Spain, and reporting on its politics and culture for Britain's most respected newspaper, The Guardian, have given him a wonderful sense of both the large picture and the quotidian details, which do so much to bring this book to life.
Anyone wanting a sense of what today's Spain is all about will find it in these pages.

I am very satisfied with this book on tape! I do past life regression for my clients and it's really nice to have an expert in the field that I can learn more from.

It was not so much the regressions into the past lives but the "rest periods" that interested me. The emphasis on teaching and helping spirits learn to change their flawed characters, in preparation for their next lives, confirmed some theories I had. From observation of spirit visits I know there are at least two laws: If you tell unwanted visitors to go away, they must obey. And they do not speak to us living. They do speak among themselves. My husband's spirit visits me at least twice a day. I talk to him but he cannot respond. If he could, I would have everything out of him in ten minutes because there is so much I want to know about the afterlife, and it must remain a mystery. Why, I do not know. He did answer one question: I asked how he was, and he wagged his hand in the comme si, comme ca gesture. According to Brian L. Weiss, Masters help those who are in need of guidance. Perhaps that is what my husband is doing, though I dare not presume he is on a high plane. Still, I might add one more facet to Weiss's thesis. Other, more evolved, spirits and not necessarily Masters, also teach. My husband brings home other spirits, some very primitive types who were probably clueless in life. I know he has befriended them. I found confirmation of my thoughts in Dr. Weiss's book.

Good reading...but I had some problems.......2007-09-23

First I "read" this book via an audio book version. I think Dr. Weiss is totally believable in his honest search to help Catherine. I think his approach will open many minds to explore or widen their religion/spiritual belief systems. Although I have some problems with some details contained in the book, I do think he has been a great help to those who are dying & their families.

The issues that I had problems with: 1. The MALE voice of the Masters...do
the "learned" ones always have to be male!! Perhaps the Masters used a male voice since they told him they were channeling their knowledge for him & not Catherine. With his cultural & belief system, a male voice would be more effective for him to consider the teachings. BUT not for me!! I would be more apt to listen a little more closely to a FEMALE Master; 2. the term "god" is mentioned 2-3 times toward the end of the book...It just seems like it should have been introduced earlier to me and 3. There is no mention of "WHO" or "WHAT" conceived Reincarnation plus its level system. I found that a big omission.

Fabulous Insight & Resource.......2007-09-09

This book has been invaluable to me over the years and I've read it time and again. Weiss lets us into the "inner circle" of therapy and shows us how ordinary people can experience physical and emotional pain from unresolved issues in another lifetime. Read this book and you will never look at your life and challenges in the same way again. It provides hope and courage and is a must-read for anyone seeking wholeness and understanding. Many Masters, Many Lives gave me the insight essential to my own novels of karma and past lives, in particular Field of Destiny.

While the writing isn't great, the stories are certainly entertaining, and are great reading for 1st-3rd Graders. The stories follow two siblings, Jack and Annie, who are magically transported to various places, and the various settings set the stage for some very fascinating, to the young reader, tales they will come to treasure.

I've been reading to my son since he was two weeks old. He just had his fourth birthday, and I gave him this Magic Tree House box set. I thought he'd get bored pretty quick since there aren't illustrations on every page, but I was wrong. We read the first book in an afternoon, and he wanted to move straight on to the next one. We've since finished the first four and I've ordered the next box set, and while we wait we're re-reading the first four. Fantastic books!

WOW. Few words can describe how I felt while reading this book.

As someone who felt imprisoned by organized religion my whole life, but whose spiritual sense left me disappointed and unconvinced by Dawkins, Harris, and others in the atheist camp, this book had answers -- real answers that made logical sense. Would it pass the validation test required by scientific method? Of course not. But it resonates with me as truth in every way that religion does not.

If you are in a boat similar to me - cynical of organized religion, but knowing that there is a spiritual world out there, this book will change the way you see the world, and provide insights for personal growth.

Thank you, Dr. Newton - your writings are a gift.

As good as it gets!.......2007-10-15

I bought this book and Destiny of Souls 2 years ago and was fascinated by the information; Already being a hypnotherapist who has done numerous past life regressions, I was intrigued to experience a session with Dr Michael Newton; unfortunately I found out he'd retired several years ago. However, the material in the book so piqued my curiosity that I found a person who does the sessions, and the experience was even more amazing than I'd imagined. All the details in the book actually came to life; it's one thing to read an amazing researchers notes; however, when I found out they were the tip of the iceberg I have to say: Dr Michael Newton has stumbled onto the ability to enter the pearly gates so to speak, and as he describes it himself, he had no idea where his clients were going and he just had to observe and let them tell him what they were experiencing. This book is truly amazing, and that is an understatement!!!! The most astounding fact is that Dr Michael Newton was able to help anyone who wanted the experience. So if the book is amazing; then how to describe the actual experience of going there.......priceless!!!!!! Great work Dr Newton, this is the only book of it's kind anywhere in the world I've ever heard of. Someone mentioned to me it was a sort of Shamanic Journey; however, I've done several of them and this is so much more profound and loving. Again, you've hit the spiritual mother-lode. And had the compassion to share your findings. Congratulations!

Journey Of Souls.......2007-10-05

There is one major difference between Dr. Newton's work compared to Dr. Weiss' work: Newton focusses on the time and activities of a soul in between lifes on Earth, while Weiss reports on the healing aspect of past life regression. There is actually not much overlap in the work of these two authors as far as I can tell (I know two of Newton's books and four or so of Dr. Weiss).

This book is a fairly easy read. Michael's language is clear and easy to understand. He clearly states his points, sometimes muses on his own interpretation of the data, but never goes off on a tangent.

The entire book is more or less centered around 29 case studies, i.e. subjects he hypnotized and regressed to their times in between lifes on Earth. Michael does start out demonstrating how a soul leaves the body at death and what happens next, and also when appropriate shows details of the previous lifes of his patients, but the focus is definitely on the activites in the soul plane. The book is very nicely structured both by the different stages upon entering and leaving the soul plane, as well as by advancement level of soul. He uses each case study to illustrate either a different stage, soul activity, or advancement level. There are chapters that explain the purpose of guides, what soul mates are, and how a new life and body are chosen.

Now, how about actually believing this? I do not have personal experience with past life regression. I know people who do. The concept of reincarnation makes a lot of sense to me, and I do not actually question the validity of it. What Michael's subjects are reporting to him in trance does effectively sound like Science Fiction often times. I was at first put off by the idea of a structured organization in the soul plane that does not sound that much different from life on Earth. That souls advance by learning both on Earth and in the soul plane in study groups. That there are advanced soul beings that are facilitating the soul activites. That advanced soul beings are guiding souls and (in some respect) judging the soul's performance. This all just sounds so un-divine.

Nevertheless, a lot of it sounds fantastic in a positive sense. The idea that souls have incarnated on other planets. That the more advanced souls experiment with creation. How souls start connecting with the brains of their assigned baby. There is a lot of content here that will amaze you! I recommend this book to folks that already believe in reincarnation (otherwise you may find Dr. Weiss' books a better introduction) and are interested in what may be happening between lifes. Especially Dr. Newton's second book offers a lot more detail on all the topics covered here.

Do you find life frustrating and meaningless?.......2007-09-11

This courageous book attempts to answer these questions through the ambitious effort of hypnotic recall through past-life therapy. Given the level of commitment and the consistency of the responses, Michael Newton paints a very credible picture of where we have come from, where we are going and why that answers many other questions of time and space.

It's a fascinating read for those with an open mind, and provides thought-provoking comfort to those who currently find life frustratingly meaningless.

Short and excellent treatment of the subject........2007-07-06

An astoundingly good read! Short and well-supported, this book looks at how slavery changed over the centuries. Originally, slavery wasn't really based upon skin color or ethnicity, but it grew to have those connotations later. In Italy particularly there was a peculiar sort of melting-pot of all cultures/backgrounds of slaves, and since Italy was rather fond of bureaucracy, we have a lot of records of slaveholders, sellers, buyers, and occasionally the slaves themselves. The book includes information about where slaves came from, how old they tended to be, what names they usually had, how long owners kept them, and what happened to them after they were freed or resold. It also discusses the Church's changing opinion on slaves and how to treat them. The subjects of Muslim vs. Christian slaves and owners, piracy, and ransom are also covered in detail. I found the information contained herein to be absolutely invaluable in learning about the practice of slavery during Renaissance times. Don't miss this book.

The first time I read this book, it messed me up for about ten months. I no longer knew what to think or believe about all the spiritual concepts I had been studying and practicing for many years. In the end, though, it literally changed the way I perceive reality. As a result of reading the book I learned to live life without beliefs. Now life is split up between what I know through direct experience, what I think might be "truth" or the way things work until I learn differently, and what I just don't know. It is not necessary to be a student of A Course in Miracles to benefit from reading this book, but if you have very strong beliefs about the way things are, this is a book that will challenge them from nearly the beginning to the end. For all the difficulty I had with the cognitive shifts that reading this book provoked, my life is clearly better for having read it

This is one of those books that includes lots of Ahaaaa moments. One of the best books that I have read in a long time. I would recommend it to any one that is either considering or doing a Course in Miracles.

This is interesting and different from anything I'd ever read before! I don't believe everyone should read this book. I know many people who are just not ready or open minded enough to accept some of what's covered/proposed here and would end up vehemently opposing it. The first time I read this I honestly didn't know what to think. I was shocked really. Many of the things this guy was saying was just out of bounds of the 'conditioning' I grew up with. I initially checked this out from the library and returned it without having made it thru the first chapter. Then, several weeks later, I ordered it kind of by accident (a recommendation from another source)and was surprised to see that this was the same book I had checked out and returned mostly unread. I think things happen for a reason, and so I thought obviously I was supposed to read this book.

This guy has had the experience of two spiritual instructors who materialize to him on several different occassions and set him straight on how things really are. They are from his past and his future. As far as the information they conveyed, I'm thinking, how could they know all of those things if they were not who they claimed to be, and why would they and Gary lie about it? Some things were easier for me to accept than others. But, that doesn't mean that I don't believe it all, it just means that I don't exactly understand it all, so therefore I won't say that it's not true, because I really don't know. Some things I just need to think about a little longer I guess.

I still pick this up and read it now and then. I have underlined and made notes to myself which I have found helpful. I was glad to have read this before I started 'A Course In Miracles'. Otherwise, I think I would have had a harder time with that. This was like a primer to get me ready for the concepts presented in ACIM.

This book has the power to change the world!.......2007-10-03

I am recommending this book whenever and wherever I have the chance to. I suffered all my life from a traumatic and tragic childhood until I read this book and began practicing true forgiveness. Mr.Renard's teachings showed me a new way to view this world and a new way to forgive. My life is forever changed. If I can heal from sexual assault, deaths, and a lifetime of suicidal depression than so can others. This book has the power to change the world, one life at a time.

What can I say about Magic Tree House Books? Wow! My eight year old son has been reading them for quite a while now. Our public library does a great job at keeping a variety but doesn't always have the one that he's just dying to read today. I hope that by giving him at least a few of his own favorites that are in this set to keep on hand at home will satisfy his very large reading appetite.

We read one or two chapters a night to my 5 1/2 yr. old son everynight. He loves all the topics that the books cover....dinosaurs, pirates, ninjas,etc. Great for any little boy!

I bought these for my 6 year old grandson for his birthday. He was excited to get them, but they were laid aside for the even more exciting toys that he received. However, as the toys got boring, these books became more entertaining. Currently he is immensely enjoying reading them. They are excellent beginning readers.

As someone who's spent the last 35 years uncovering and writing about my own past lives, and studying how the karma from each of them has played out in the events and relationships of my present life, I suppose I bring something of a unique perspective to Dr Michael Newton's extraordinary trilogy, "Journey of Souls," "Destiny of Souls," and "Life Between Lives." Even after uncovering three of my own historically identifiable, though far from famous, past personas, I was still frustrated that neither I, nor any of the writers I had consulted seem to be able to throw any light on the issue of what happens to us between lifetimes.

But then, I discovered the works of Michael Newton, arguably the most important and most fascinating accounts of this entire genre. By directing the focus of his subjects away from their subconscious and toward their super-conscious, it seems Dr Newton succeeded in accessing a spiritual dimension previously untapped by the vast majority of researchers in this field. Once there, he was able to painstakingly document over many years what is undoubtedly one of the most comprehensive, detailed and believable models of what takes place in the afterlife anyone has ever put forward. Most importantly, it portrays in very convincing terms just how each of us goes about planning and designing our future lives. And once we absorb such a concept it becomes difficult for anyone to fail to take responsibility for their own lives, even with all its challenges and disappointments.

As fate would have it, I discovered Newton's works just after reading "Same Soul, Many Bodies" by the prolific Dr Brian Weiss. In it he discusses his experiences with "future life progression" as a technique for inspiring and motivating patients to change the directions of their lives by revealing the potentialities awaiting them in future incarnations, if they can just make the right choices in the here-and-now.

Comparing the claims of Dr Weiss with those of Dr Newton seemed to leave me with something of a paradox, which was namely this: If Dr Newton was correct that when we die we return to the spiritual realm to take on the work of planning and designing our next life, how would it be possible for Dr Weiss to explore our future lives while we are still alive, since the planning process had not taken place yet?

To resolve this conundrum I decided to have a chat with my spirit guide, Prakash. He first reminded me that linear time is only an operable construct in the physical dimension, and that from the perspective of the spiritual realm all physical incarnations co-exist simultaneously in a moment of eternity. Therefore, it follows that all those between life episodes that Dr Newton describes likewise exist in that same simultaneous eternity. The only reason is seems confusing is because Dr Newton is exploring and reporting what appears to be a linear sequence of lives and their related planning episodes, which necessarily skews his perspective due to his viewing the information from his location here in this dimension of linear time.

This gave me an idea. From all of my past lives that I have explored over the last three decades, two have stood out as closely related, even though they were separated by 700 years. The first was my life as Genghis Khan's nephew Yegu, and the second was my life as Field Marshall Count Helmuth von Moltke (the younger), nephew of von Moltke (the elder), his uncle and namesake, the military genius and hero of the Franco-Prussian War who helped Bismarck unite the German Empire. In the first life the plan for me to succeed my uncle Genghis failed, but in the second I did succeed my uncle as Chief of the German General Staff prior to and during the initial phases of WW I. As you might suspect, von Moltke (the elder) was a reincarnation of Genghis Khan.

What occurred to me is that exploring the planning stages of these two incarnations in tandem would provide a rare opportunity to see this whole planning process at its most complex. Fortunately, Dr Newton's third book, "Life Between Lives" was designed as something of a do-it-yourself training manual for just such explorations. So I guess that will be my next project.

Read "Journey of the Souls". If you like that one AND you are into research and detailed info, then this book is for you. If you were convinced by Journey of the Souls and are the type of person that does not like to be bogged down with details, then I'd skip this one... Well unless you want the complete set :)

I am glad I bought it and would buy book 3 if he writes one and it had more detailed case studies.

The Great Lesson of Earth.......2007-06-01

Like JOURNEY OF SOULS, this book is not some trivial, New Age potboiler. I read it cover-to-cover (and intend to do so again) and I have found it to be quite satisfying and believable. It goes into much greater detail than the first volume with many more case studies. An example of the further detail is the chapter on earthly spirits (nature spirits, ghosts, souls in seclusion, discarnates who visit earth, and demons or devas), and the chapter on soul specializations (nursery teachers, ethicists, harmonizer souls, masters of design, explorers...)

As I said before, I know some people are going to automatically reject it because it relies on hypnotherapy. They are going to assume that the hypnotist implanted false memories among his clients. At the very least, they are going to claim that networking between the 67 clients covered in these case studies resulted in the remarkable consistency among them. This does not appear to be the case. The author holds a Ph.D. in counseling and is a state-certified Master Hypnotherapist. He is aware of the common criticisms and he makes a believable case for why they do not apply in his work. I believed him.

Once again, the overall consistency between the 67 cases is remarkable. Different terminology and symbolism is occasionally used but it is obvious that the same things are being described. What we have is an orderly picture of classification of soul development and of the structure of the spiritual world. It is remarkably similar to that described in different language over the millennia by shamans, the Vedas, the Platonists, the Gnostics. It also reminds one of the experiences of Robert Monroe and of George Meek in more modern times. Yet, you do not get the impression that the author or his subjects were overly familiar with these teachings at the time of the sessions. It is like the spontaneous symbolism that Jung described as arising from the collective unconscious; only in this case the source is the hyperconscious- the realm of soul guides.

We forfeit our physical body after death but our eternal life energy unites with the force of a divine oversoul in an orderly progression. Our soul reflects a small portion of this oversoul that we call God.

As it clearly states near the end of the book, the great lesson of Earth is to overcome both planetary and private destructive forces in life, grow strong from the effort, and move on. But then earth isn't the only available learning ground...

Expands on First book.......2007-04-05

Mr. Newton expands on the work of his first book with plenty of new information. This book, as the first, is written based on information that Michael Newton has gained from hundreds of clients that have experienced life "on the other side", or in heaven. The first book guides you through the process chronologically after death, this book basically expands on the first without a chronological format. Has interesting new info, like, where do new souls come from? Are their pets in heaven, and if so, do we have access to them? Recommend reading his first book first, but it 's not necessary.

A new view on what love really is.......2007-09-26

As with "Many Lives, Many Masters", you'll need to have a open mind to appreciate this brilliant work of Brian Weiss. Here, he relates the discovery that two of his patients, Elizabeth and Pedro, who had not previously known each other, were actually long-lost soulmates. These two had been husband and wife, father and daughter, brother and sister and were, in each of those lifetimes that were uncovered, bonded strongly to each other. The two were finally reunited, with a little help from the doctor.

I now comprehend the meaning of the word, "soulmates" and "love" at a different level, from a different perspective altogether. These revelations opened my mind to a new definition of love- something that is unconditional, true, and pure. When I look into the eyes of my beloved son now, I no longer question why I love him so. I can only love him even more. And it also gives me reassurance and hope for a better, more emotionally fufilling life ahead, whether it is in my current lifetime or the next.

In many ways, I find this book more powerful than "Many Lives". It touches my life in many aspects, such as the topic of miscarriages, that was briefly mentioned. The explanations for various phenomena in life given in terms of souls and rebirthing leave an everlasting sense of calm within me. This book will be of great help for individuals who are struggling with relationships. For people who think they don't need it, think again, because it helped me.

Shows some weakness in the good doctors understanding.......2007-08-08

In "Only Love is Real," best selling author and psychotherapist Dr. Brian Weiss traces the karmic threads connecting two souls drawn together by "love" over many lifetimes. Ordinarily, I have great respect for Dr Weiss and his work, but in this case I'm afraid he demonstrates a lack of discernment by concluding that a couple whose relationship is characterized by great "passion," would necessarily constitute "soul mates," a little understood and widely abused term.

To be accurate, the term "soul-mate" refers to two separate entities who are friends unburdened by any karmic debt. What is commonly assumed by the term soul-mates is more properly described as "dharmic-partners," meaning souls united in their spiritual purpose, whether physically together or not. We may have several soul-mates, but only one dharmic-partner, a relationship based on service-to-others.

This leaves "karmic-partners," making up the bulk of our relationships, at least until we clear our karma and are ready to connect with our dharmic-partner. Karmic-partner relationships are characterized by "passion," the strong desires that create our karma, precisely the thing that makes Dr Weiss think his couple are soul-mates.

In my own life I've had more than my share of intensely passionate karmic relationships, so many that I gave my autobiography "The Vortex" the subtitle of "A True Story of Passion and Karma." My realizations of how past life trauma accounted for the events of my present life didn't originate from lying on Dr Weiss' couch in trance. They came to me through a continuous chain of spontaneous psychic encounters over 25 years, involving events of a lifetime 800 years ago when I was a nephew of Genghis Khan. From my third wife who would pay me back for abandoning her in favor of a slave girl, to the fourth wife who couldn't trust me because of my putting her to death as my younger brother, and the lover who had been my former slave and had vowed to escape from me "no matter how long it took," both passion and love were central features of each of these intensely karmic relationships.

My journey of discovery began in the spring of 1975. My third wife was sitting in front of me reciting an 800 year old Greek Orthodox prayer that was reputed to dispel evil and quiet the mind when she was suddenly plunged into a spontaneous psychic vision. Before her she saw a shaft of electric blue light coming down through the top of my head and engulfing my entire body, and a very old monk dressed in red robes standing off to my right.

As soon as she described the monk I was immediately struck by his similarity to what a previous psychic had referred to years earlier as my "very powerful spirit guide." But before I could speak of this she reported that his features were morphing, first into a Prussian General, then into a Mongolian Warlord from the time of Genghis Khan. Next she reported seeing an inextricably terrifying amorphous blob of grayish-white energy off to my left.

A few months later we decided to take a seminar in psychic healing given by legendary psychic healer Ben Bibb, and during an aura reading exercise, in which I was the subject, the entire class reported seeing everything she had seen months earlier, and in exactly the same order and detail. According to Bibb the man in red robes was indeed my spirit guide, the Prussian and Mongolian were personas from two of my past lives, and the blob of energy was a "familiar spirit," an artificial being created during a previous life of high psychic development. As to the shaft of blue light he hadn't a clue.

This is the point at which I probably should have sought the help of someone like Dr. Weiss. Unfortunately, I decided to tough it out on my own and for the next 25 years was continuously plagued by spontaneous encounters with "psychics" who seemed bent on answering all the questions I was too reluctant to ask about the events of these two previous lives.

As the evidence continued to mount I eventually began to realize how the tragic events of these prior lifetimes had in fact shaped both the events and the relationships of my current life. Almost everyone in my current life it seemed, friends, lovers, wives, business partners, had played some pivotal role in these former incarnations and had now returned to help me resolve the karmic issues, whether I consciously wanted to or not.

Aside from discovering my own tragic role in Genghis Khan's conquests as his nephew Yegu, and my role in Germany's involvement in World War I as its Chief of the General Staff, there was a lot of other new knowledge to be acquired along the way as well. Things like how to communicate directly with my Guide, how to control my "familiar," what my spiritual dharma (ie purpose) was and how that related to my having been initiated, while still in my teens, into the spiritual brotherhood responsible for the shaft of blue light.

Amazingly, after documenting all these events in my autobiography I was even able to substantiate many of the events described through historical research. My only regret is that for too long my Guide had to drag me "kicking and screaming" just to get me to listen to what he was trying to tell me. In retrospect, if I had it all to do over again, I would call Dr. Weiss. I'm sure the whole process could have been handled a lot faster and less painfully with his help.

But then I try to look on the bright side. My story may serve as a good example of how NOT to go about handling one's karmic issues when they jump into one's face. At least we can hope.
