5 out of 5 stars Cashing In on a Second Home in Mexico: How to Buy, Rent and Profit from Property South of the Border.......2007-08-28

Book in great condition. Easy reading, and many good pointers on moving to Mexico. Great information on email address for help on subject of renting or owning property. Think it will be very usefull.

5 out of 5 stars Useful information.......2007-07-19

I found this book very informative. It covered all aspects of buying property in Mexcio and information on specific areas of the country. Even though he promotes Stewart Title Insurance I see how this is an important area to consider when purchasing in Mexico. I learned a lot and will keep this book for future reference.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-07-05

I "bought" a home in Puerto Pensaco two years ago. I am still trying to get my Fideicomiso. While everything looks like it will turn out ok, I sure wish i had read this book first. If nothing else I would have understood the process better and would have know what questions to ask and what documents to look for.

A very informative book and I highly recommend it to anyone thinking about buying in Mexico. It will increase you comfort level trmendously.

3 out of 5 stars Giving it a 3 because it did contain some useful information.......2007-06-15

It deserves 3 stars because it did contain some useful information which was unknown to me, however it wasn't that great of a read. There are not a whole lot of books on buying a home in Mexico so this one will have to do for now.

2 out of 5 stars Very Poorly Written.......2007-05-07

I found this book very poorly written, incredibly boring, and repetitive to the point that the eyes glaze over after a while. I think one of the writers must be a lawyer whose intention is to make things obscure rather than clear. It needs a thorough editing, but I think the person would be "mad as a hatter" before s/he finished the task. As another reviewer observed, the book should be greatly reduced in size, and Stewart Title Company should pay for advertisement -- if it had not already done so. Appendix B "Getting Into Mexico" is totally out of date.

Great book if you like New Mexico and seeing the land.

5 out of 5 stars New Mexico Landscape Paintings of Enchantment.......2006-08-31

As a landscape painter, I moved from Hawai'i to NYC then out West to see the land, the light; to experience first hand the profound spiritual quality of being one with the Universe. These painters get it! This book is by far, the best contemporary representation of landscape painters' painting I have seen to date. Each artist has a profile/commentary prelude to set the stage for their experience of this enchanted land. There are just enough wonderful photographs of their work to entice you to want to see more. It is a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars "Landscapes of New Mexico".......2006-06-26

"Landscapes of New Mexico" is an excellent, outstanding book on landscapes artitsts in New Mexico. My love affair with New Mexico and its artists began, when I was a freshman in college, in 1969. Over the years I have visited and revisited and visited again Santa Fe and many other parts of New Mexico. I have become extremely familiar with the works of Charles Azbell who, is one of the artists, profiled in the book. Some of the other artists I was less familiar with and others, quite frankly, I was introduced to for the first time. I have found this book to be a wonderful, wonderful resource to supplement and enhance the knowledge and familiarity I had of the artists and their work.

This book gives a fairly detailed background and insight on many landscape artists and their works. For each artist that is profiled in the book there are a number of photos of their works.
I found that to be especially helpful as I try to enahance my appreciation and knowledge of landscape artists in the Land of Enchantment.

Over the years I have read some books on up and coming artists of all kinds. Until now I have not read a book on this subject that was as detailed and as generously photographed as "Landscapes of New Mexico" Previosuly the books were either much too detailed, not detrailed enough or didnt have many photos of the artists work. This book, I am ecstatic to say, achieves just thr right balance.

For anyone that is interested in starting to learn about, in a broad overview ,or supplement their knowledge of landscape artists in New Mexico, there is no better book on this subject than "Landscapes of New Mexico"

Book Description

Riding on the heels of the hilarious send-ups Molvania: A Land Untouched by Modern Dentistry and Phaic Tăn: Sunstroke on a Shoestring, comes San Sombrero. The people of San Sombrero are an outgoing, talkative, and sociable bunch, which perhaps explains why so few have succeeded as spies. Laughing comes naturally to them, and it's not unusual to see large groups of people doubled over with laughter, even in court or during a funeral. Often described as "the Venice of Central America" (due to the fact that many of its coastal cities are sinking), the sun-baked island of San Sombrero offers something for everyone, be they music lover, eco-tourist, history buff, or UN Human Rights Commissioner. From the frenetic nightlife of its capital Cucaracha City to the guaranteed solitude of a west coast beach during sea-snake season, there's simply so much to see and do in this undiscovered tropical jewel.

4 out of 5 stars Another great book in the series.......2007-08-28

While not quite as good as the first book on Molvania, San Sombrero is still a fun book and well worth the time to read it. It makes you even want to read the restaurant and hotel information for the twist they manage to work into them. Vive San Sombrero! Vive (insert name here), el Presidente!

4 out of 5 stars Viva San Sombrero.......2007-08-26

Very funny, as are the orher two titles in this series. Amazon should offer a package collecting all three- "Molvania", Phaic Tan" and "San Sombrero". There are several other titles mentioned in these books as future publications in the Jetlag Travel Series. I'll buy them when available. I'm particularly looking forward to "Travel for Seniors" with information on the twenty best places in the world to lodge a complaint.Iwant to know if Rick Steves' many books on European travel inspired the authors of the Jetlag Series to parody them. Please comment, Santo Cilauro.

5 out of 5 stars be warned.......2007-02-27

Look, we don't know each other. I may be an inveterate exaggerator, right? I might give all fives on my Amazon reviews. I might detest conflict and only say nice things about books.

You don't know, do you?

So let me assure you that none of those things is true, because I'm going to make a statement that might seem ludicrous: SAN SOMBRERO is one of the funniest things I've ever read. My wife thinks so, too, and we don't agree on very much. Even my Rhodesian Ridgeback seems particularly jaunty when I'm reading SAN SOMBRERO.

An Aussie friend introduced me to the Jet Lag travel guide spoofs. SAN SOMBRERO is actually the third in a series but the first I've read. It doesn't matter where you begin, but - if you have ever read a serious travel guide of any kind (say, Frommers, Rough Guide, etc.) - then you'll *love* what these lunatics do with the genre.

SAN SOMBRERO is roughly based on Costa Rica, Cuba, and any number of other Latin American 'travel paradise' locations. Each time you think the authors have exhausted their uproarious takes on one of the conventional aspects of the genre, you turn a page and they hit you again.

It's inexhaustibly entertaining, right up to the 'insert' at the back of the book.

I can't wait to read PHAIC TAN and MOLVANIA.

Aussies, all is forgiven, even your abysmal cricket side and the freakin' long airplane rides it takes to get where you are. You can come home now and rejoin the family of nations.

4 out of 5 stars Just as funny as the first two........2007-01-04

I own the first two in this series (Molvania, A Land Untouched By Modern Dentistry, and Phaic Than, Sunstroke on a Shoestring). I bought this hoping it was half as funny, because they were hilarious. Imagine my pleasure to find that the third installment was new, fresh, and still very funny. I love to read these while I am travelling.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant parody of Latin America travel guides.......2006-12-29

I don't go out of my way looking for comedy, but I found this in my parents' collection during a visit back home. Probably the more familiar you are with Latin America travel guides, the more you'll appreciate this book, which exaggerates the dangers of travel (disease, political unrest, insects, street food), and desperate living conditions, etc. as much as the guide books tend to downplay these conditions. This book is funny to me because rather than being absurd, it is loosely based on the (sometimes frightening) truth. The book is well-designed and illustrated- if you just looked at the pictures, you wouldn't know it wasn't a real guide book. Following are some excerpts (which are by no means highlights, as the humor is relentless):

"Be very suspicious about taking a ride in a cab where a 'friend' is accompanying the driver. San Sombreran taxi drivers don't have friends."

"San Sombrerans are passionate movie-goers, possibly because cinemas are the only air-condition buildings in town."

"Political instability has seen 17 different presidents take power in the past decade, the shortest reign being that of Alivio Escrevez who was assassinated halfways through his own inauguration speech."

    Book Description

In Soul of Nowhere, Craig Childs answers the call of fierce places; the more desolate the landscape, the more passionately he is drawn to it. Childs tracks a broad territory: the Sierra Madre Mountains, the canyons of Utah, the White Mountain Apache Reservation, a deserted island in the Sea of Cortez. In his extraordinary nomadic treks, the author finds the land animated and himself enlivened. Childs’s obvious love for seemingly inhospitable places redeems them for armchair travelers and outdoor adventurers alike. Black-and-white photographs and pen-and-ink drawings by the author are included. “Childs is a poet at heart.” — San Francisco Chronicle

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars another winner.......2007-08-15

Like other reviewers, my first exposure to Craig Childs was through his book The Secret Knowledge of Water, which is excellent. Soul of Nowhere doesn't move me as much as Secret Knowledge, but it's still a great read.

The first book focused on his adventures looking for water sources in deserts of the southwest. In this book, the focus is more on finding archaeological relics in the deep desert. In some cases it's ruins, in others jars or petroglyphs. One can sense his desire to find evidence of and connect with long vanished people of the desert.

I thought the inclusion of the other people was interesting. It places Childs in a social context - we encounter others who share his passion, and they're memorable characters. Other reviewers have said that Childs shares way too much here - it may not be to their taste, but it's not necessarily a bad thing. In any event, he shares some fascinating stories with us. I will definitely be reading more of his books.

    4 out of 5 stars It's worth reading.......2007-07-31

I've read two Craig Childs books so far and loved them both. If I have a criticism it is that his language is pretty over the top. I'd say it was melodramatic if I didn't know just how he feels and that being mezmerized by the wilderness brings out such thoughts and words.

Once you get into the flow of the book it reads well. Introspection and lofty thoughts have always been a part of wilderness and adventure writing, and that is certainly better than reading a clinical account.

I agree that there is a little too much personal information and thus only 4 stars.

5 out of 5 stars celebration and medicine.......2006-05-01

Craig's work is filled with grace, both inner and outer. In this book, he gives us his willingness to leap away from the standard "I went here, I went there, I had an epiphany" of too many of the wilderness boy writers; his profound love for both the land and his companions; the tenderness and courage he brings to fresh language about ancient rock and light. For those of us blessed to have walked on, over and deep in the ground he cherishes, there need be no further explanation of "outer grace."

This book is for the bleak times that visit those of us who love these western lands...and who need to be reminded of true friendship and abiding love.

3 out of 5 stars For the Adventurous Spirit.......2004-08-07

I have a long-standing interest in the desert, having lived there for years and having done some explorations of my own. But never did I dream of taking the kind of trips Craig Childs recounts in his books. After reading The Secret Knowledge of Water, I eagerly dove into Soul of Nowhere expecting more spellbinding tales of survival on the margins of life.
When I finished, I felt a little disappointed. Yes, there are some harrowing tales but there is also a little too much new-age prose and speculation for my taste. And I agree with the reviewer who complained of too much personal information.
Still, Soul of Nowhere is overall an enjoyable read. My favorite chapters are Passage, Labrynth, and Island. It is in these three chapters that Childs' storytelling comes alive. Emotion leaps off the page, the reader feels at one with the narrator as he traverses this wild and dangerous country. Since I have hiked in some of this same country, albeit on marked trails, I could very nearly feel the trembling fear Childs felt when he lost momentum climbing the sandstone arch or when the rock crumbled beneath his boots as he decended the old Anasazi passage into the Grand Canyon, or when he found himself nearly lost in a thicket of cactus in the searing mid-day heat as his every avenue of escape seemed blocked.
Childs has a definite talent for painting a life-like picture with his words, but he also has a talent for obscuring that picture with a lot of pseudo-intellectual mumbo-jumbo that gives the reader the impression that he is just trying too hard to write a "serious" book.
Despite those drawbacks, Childs' otherworldly escapades are like a magnet to the adventurous spirit. I look forward to reading more of his work because he sure does seem to have an interesting lifestyle.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating, Absorbing, Well Written.......2003-04-08

I read a lot of outdoor books, and I have to say this is one of the best that I have read in ages. Craig Childs lives, breaths, eats "wild." He writes with a clarity that makes me feel like I am alongside him -- and with a passion that is contagious. I am already planning a trip to visit some of the places he writes about. In the meantime, I'll nurse my desires by trying some of his other books.

        Book Description

"This is an important and comprehensive book that is timely, original, and of uniformly high quality. There is relatively little familiarity outside of Mexico with the incredibly rich experience of community forest management there. Certainly no comprehensive review such as this book exists that covers so many aspects of the subject. . . . The book will appeal to scholars from both social and biophysical sciences interested in forest management and in broader conservation and development issues."

—Marianne Schmink, Director of the Center for Latin American Studies Tropical Conservation and Development Program, University of Florida

Mexico leads the world in community management of forests for the commercial production of timber. Yet this success story is not widely known, even in Mexico, despite the fact that communities around the globe are increasingly involved in managing their own forest resources. To assess the achievements and shortcomings of Mexico's community forest management programs and to offer approaches that can be applied in other parts of the world, this book collects fourteen articles that explore community forest management from historical, policy, economic, ecological, sociological, and political perspectives.

The contributors to this book are established researchers in the field, as well as many of the important actors in Mexico's nongovernmental organization sector. Some articles are case studies of community forest management programs in the states of Michoacán, Oaxaca, Durango, Quintana Roo, and Guerrero. Others provide broader historical and contemporary overviews of various aspects of community forest management. As a whole, this volume clearly establishes that the community forest sector in Mexico is large, diverse, and has achieved unusual maturity in doing what communities in the rest of the world are only beginning to explore: how to balance community income with forest conservation. In this process, Mexican communities are also managing for sustainable landscapes and livelihoods.

        Book Description

Bioprospecting--the exchange of plants for corporate promises of royalties or community development assistance--has been lauded as a way to develop new medicines while offering southern nations and indigenous communities an incentive to preserve their rich biodiversity. But can pharmaceutical profits really advance conservation and indigenous rights? How much should companies pay and to whom? Who stands to gain and lose? The first anthropological study of the practices mobilized in the name and in the shadow of bioprospecting, this book takes us into the unexpected sites where Mexican scientists and American companies venture looking for medicinal plants and local knowledge.

Cori Hayden tracks bioprospecting's contentious new promise--and the contradictory activities generated in its name. Focusing on a contract involving Mexico's National Autonomous University, Hayden examines the practices through which researchers, plant vendors, rural collectors, indigenous cooperatives, and other actors put prospecting to work. By paying unique attention to scientific research, she provides a key to understanding which people and plants are included in the promise of "selling biodiversity to save it"--and which are not. And she considers the consequences of linking scientific research and rural "enfranchisement" to the logics of intellectual property.

Roving across UN protocols, botanical collecting histories, Mexican nationalist agendas, neoliberal property regimes, and North-South relations, When Nature Goes Public charts the myriad, emergent publics that drive and contest the global market in biodiversity and its futures.

        Book Description

Despite their seemingly impenetrable western facade, the Sandia Mountains of central New Mexico have been home to humankind for millennia. Ancient cultures ventured into these peaks for the creeks, game, and shelter. The Spanish established protective outposts along the canyons and intermarried with local tribes. Civil War soldiers passed through en route to their infamous battle at Glorieta Pass. Navajos marched around the mountains' southern end after the confinement that ended their Long Walk. Anglo settlers cleared the hilly land and built cabins. And tuberculosis patients moved up into primitive resorts, hoping that the mountains' abundant sunshine and fresh air would help them heal. Today the tiny resorts and traditional hamlets of the Sandias are established villages and communitiesÂ-Carnuel, Tijeras, San Antonio, Cedar Crest, Sandia Park, San Antonito, Placitas, and othersÂ-and the rough dirt roads that once saw the passing of ox carts are highways and even an interstate. The area's history lives on, however, in crumbling adobe walls, bits of rust, fading memories, and in this photographic retrospective.

It's hard to stop reading, engrossing, hard to stop reading!

My wife and are enjoying this book immensely, well written and the details of the areas of the places around us here in Tijeras are fantastic. This book brings the rich history to light in an enjoyable read. The photographs are amazing, to see the places as they were and are now.

Mike Smith, the author is extremely accessible for any questions or comments about his book, the region and the history.

5 out of 5 stars Changed how I look at my hometown.......2006-11-22

Growing up in one of the towns of the Sandia Mountains, I can ashamedly say that I really didn't do much digging into the history of the place. I don't know why really, I guess I figured it was just there and left it at that. Then comes along this little dandy of a history book wherein the unique history of the place I grew up in is laid before you through non-run of the mill descriptions, quirky photos, and some fantastic quotes from the people who have made up and make these towns.
This book is published through Arcadia, which has about, I don't know how many, of these history/photo style books. I have read a few books from Arcadia and maybe it's because this is one that specifically talks about the place I grew up in, but Towns of the Sandia Mountains seems to sit a few levels above the others Arcadia has out there.
This book reads like a dreamy ride through the past on an old desert road. Starting on Route 66 in Albuquerque and lazily winding it's way up into the mountain towns, past the towns, higher into the mountian, down a back pass, to the front of mountian and back into Albuquerque, picking up the towns of Carnuel, Tijeras, Hobbies, San Antonio, Cedar Crest, Canoncito, San Antonito, Sandia Park, and Placitas along the way, as well as a brief concluding chapter on Albuquerque touching on its growth into the mountain. Some of the pictures in this book are completely astounding to see. There are amazing photos of areas with just a few cattle grazing around that now have freeways and strip malls running through them. Pictures of places, if you know that area, you would never recognize. Pictures of Hippies and TB patients alike escaping into the mountains. People who made this town that you never knew who now you can know.
This book does away with the dull page after page of random portraits of people with boring captions style of history writing and brings new life to history.
If you live in the Sandia, used to, or are just interested in a unique area then I would say this is a good little read for you. Eight thumbs up!

          Book Description

Internationally renowned photographer Lucian Niemeyer and National Park Service historian Art Gómez have combined talents in a new presentation on New Mexico. Niemeyer's more than 150 color photographs encompass the entire state throughout the seasons presenting New Mexico's people, cultures, and magnificent scenery at the millennium. Gómez's sweeping history views the state in terms of corridors, geographic as well as cultural. New Mexico's mountains, deserts, and rivers form natural corridors that migrating birds and animals have traditionally used for survival. Navigating these same corridors across the state, human cultures of Paleo, Plains and Pueblo Indians, Hispanos, and Anglos forged viable communities on the astringent New Mexican landscape.

Pueblo ancestors migrated from austere environments throughout the Southwest to more inviting surroundings on the Rio Grande. Plains Indians from the north and Hispano tradesmen from the south converged via the Camino Real. American settlers migrated west along the Santa Fe Trail, the southernmost corridor around the formidable Rocky Mountains. Improved transportation such as the railroad and later Route 66, precursors to the interstate highway system, annually lured new inhabitants to this compelling land called New Mexico.

Handsome color photographs of the unique landscapes of New Mexico with an essay on the pathways which have drawn people and animal life to its varied surroundings for millennia.
