Enthusiastically recommended for parents, teachers, and caregivers of young children everywhere........2007-04-14
Kindergarten teacher Jill Frankel Hauser presents Science Play, a compendium of over 65 safe, age-appropriate activities designed to foster creativity and a sense of discovery in children ages 2 to 6. Step-by-step instructions and simple black-and-white illustrations walk readers through activities such as observing earthworms at work, making puddle prints with food coloring, water, and a simple medicine dropper, or gathering and sorting rocks. Young children will most likely need an adult's help with reading the instructions, but the activities themselves are easy to do and highly inexpensive. Enthusiastically recommended for parents, teachers, and caregivers of young children everywhere.
A fun way to introduce science to little kids!.......2006-02-13
It's absolutely perfect for our 3- and 5-year olds! It's a great way to introduce science concepts to them. The experiments are simple to prepare, very interesting and lots of fun. Also, most of the materials are common items used at home. We have done a number of the experiments without spending much money at all. It comes very handy, too, during rainy or snowy days. The activities help keep the kids from getting bored inside the house.
Outstanding resource.......2004-02-08
My kids loved these fun learning activities. Enough to keep them busy through early childhood. Nothing canned here. . . all creative and discovery-focused. Makes biology and even physics accessable to very young children. You can't go wrong with this outstanding guide.
This series is GREAT.......2003-07-31
This is really handy for the budding scientist in your preschooler. Experiements are written so that the early reader can understand and do the experiments on their own (it lets the reader know when a parent needs to help or supervise, such as when scissors are involved) and has question that the parent can use to further expand on projects. Also check this whole series, such as math play, arts and crafts from around the world, rainy day play, weather, shapes, etc. My son loves these activies. Plus for the price, you can't beat it. (...)
Dissatisfied in Annandale.......2003-01-12
This book had some neat ideas and experiments, but not enough explanations for them. I have a very inquisitive 4 year old and this book just didn't satisfy his curiosity or my expectations.
Amazon.com
The Exploratorium in San Francisco is "a museum of science, art, and human perception founded in 1969 by physicist Frank Oppenheimer. The mission of the Exploratorium is to create innovative learning environments, programs, and tools for exploration that help people of all ages, origins, and geographic locations use their natural curiosity to learn about the world around them." And if you've ever been there, you know that this ambitious mission statement is fulfilled in spades. It is an extraordinary place that I try to visit every time I go to San Francisco.
This delightful book allows you to create your own Exploratorium at home. It's got loads of experiments that, in the best Exploratorium tradition, are fun and highly educational (as an aside, by following one of the exercises, I was able to make a styrofoam airplane that looks suspiciously like the Amazon.com Books logo--and it flies!). Highly Recommended for the curious and playful of any age.

Good Fun and Good Science!.......2003-04-08
Many science experiment books out there either have bad science in them, poorly designed experiments, or unclear directions (or, unfortunately, all three). This book has great experiments that are easy and fun to do. And, the science behind the experiments is accurate and clearly explained. As a scientist, science teacher, and parent, this book is the first one my list of recommendations!
Experiments for "Bring Your Kids to Work" Day.......2000-03-29
I ordered several books to prepare for the experiments I wanted to present for the "Bring Your Kids to Work" Day. This was, by far, the most useful and most interesting book I received. You can use the experiments listed in the book, and tailor them for younger or older children very easily. I'm going to order the sequel, "Science Explorer, Out and About," today!
The best and easiest book of its kind!.......1999-09-19
I am an elementary school teacher and the mother of three young children so I have read a lot of books that say they are filled with easy-to-do science experiments but this is by far the best of its kind that I have read. Within the first two hours my kids and I did three of the experiments AND had a great time together AND learned something!

Proves there is Nature in the Big City.......2004-07-14
This is my second "Little Hands" book (the first one was The Little Hands Big Fun Craft Book: Creative Fun for 2- To 6-Year-Olds, which by the way is fantastic). The Little Hands Nature Book proved to be yet another way to make the most of my time with my little sister. We live in Southern California, where it is sometimes easy to not see nature at all, so we really enjoyed going to the local parks and doing the activities this wonderful book provides.
My sister had so much fun learning about nature and I had fun being with her and seeing her eyes light up. This "Little Hands" series is quickly becoming my favorite thing to share with her.
If you have a child in your life that you want to inspire, I'd suggest picking this little gem up. You will be amazed at how much wonder such a little book can inspire!
Grandparents choice.......2000-04-29
Little Hands Nature Book was just wonderful! My grandchild loved doing so many of the activities. They were presented in a clear, easy to follow method. Thank you Nancy Castaldo for a book that even grandparents can enjoy.

Perfect for Elementary School Kids.......2007-01-10
When my son's third-grade teacher said the students could get extra credit for doing science experiments in front of the class, I began a search for a great book that would not only give simple, interesting experiments, but that would provide information about the concepts behind the projects. This book fit the bill perfectly! We've done two or three of these in front of the class already -- the kids were interested, and my son was able to convey some interesting scientific principles. Great for teachers, home schoolers, or parents intent on getting their kids extra credit. :)
You'll love this book if you're teaching the elements.......2005-05-29
I bought this for my 3rd and 4th grade homeschooled children. There are no concepts that make the Periodic Table seem dull or uninteresting in this book. Instead, it uses simple language for the elementary aged - middle school student, nice black and white drawings, and silly rhymes to make it seem so understandable and fascinating. You'll find it loaded with facts that interest children to help them draw it all together. The idea my kids are left with is that science is "so cool!" Many experiments, using everyday items, are throughout the book. This enhances the fun and learning. Science should be interesting and not boring. This book exceeded my expectations. I'm sure we'll continue to use this book for several years.
Absolutely Wonderful Chemistry.......2004-10-12
If you teach the elements and/or the periodic table to elementary students and want to make them come alive, this book is a definite must have. It is chock full of easy to prepare investigations as well as "element essentials" thumbnail sketches of various elements. Most materials are ones you have on hand either at home or school. Without a doubt, it is the best elementary chemistry book I have ever seen.
Recommended homeschoolers' resource.......2003-12-29
Calling all home educators! Here is a way to teach the periodic
table to your children using witty text, amusing illustrations, and
fascinating do-at-home experiments. Dr. Brandolini really helps
young and old alike to understand the science found in our everyday lives
through this intriguing book. This is one of those books that your kids will WANT to pull down from the home library shelves to enjoy.
Fun and educational.......2003-06-21
Excellent book for 8 grades and up! Great for science teachers and parents to explore unique and educational science projects.

Customer Reviews:
Wow, amazing material here.......2006-06-14
The criticisms of this book are true. The information that the reviewers say is lacking is indeed not there. More importantly, the information--especially the photographs and drawings--that is there is spectcacular. While I would like to know much more information about the life of the prisoners, and many other details, the information that is here would likely be much harder to find than what is missing if the authors had not provided it. I think that the problem might be the title more than anything else. Possibly the title infers something different from what was delivered.
I was thrilled and amazed to see B24 and B17 aircraft with Swiss air force markings. These must be really rare photographs indeed.
For What It Is.......2005-09-30
Squadron Signal books are primarily printed as an aid to model builders. With this in mind, amost the entirety of the book is dedicated to detailed photos and drawings of the aircraft in question.
Good Overview.......2004-10-08
This is in response to one of the previous reviews that wished there was more information on the pilots interned in Switzerland. You might want to read "Refuge from the Reich" by Stephen Tanner. He goes into all the details regarding the men and includes a nice, concise, history of how Switzerland ended up being neutral.
Good book from Squadron/Signal.......2004-06-15
This review is mainly a response to previous reviews more than the book itself. For those familiar with Squadron/Signal publications, the format of this book will be familiar. The subjects of most Squadron/Signal publications are aircraft specifically, more so than the men who flew them.
The two previous reviews for this book (as of the time of this posting) are actually for Strangers in a Strange Land Vol. II: Escape to Neutrality. The first (and more interesting) volume of this series, also by Stapfer, dealt with allied aircraft that had fallen into the hands of the Luftwaffe during WWII.
Good book , but missing a lot.......2001-06-12
The story of the planes and men interned in Switzerland during World War II is little known. Unfortunately, after reading this book, it is still mostly a mystery. I congratulate the authors for tackling the subject, but their treatment is superficial, focusing primarily on the aircraft and only secondarily on the men who flew them in. Though the book is full of excellent photographs of the planes that limped into neutral Switzerland, it does not examine some of the greater issues of the internees. There is little on the way the interned aircrews lived while in captivity, even less on the notorious Swiss prison camp the Swiss operated for some internees. The authors, who are Swiss, do touch briefly on the delicate balancing act the Swiss played during the war in placating their stronger neighbor, Nazi Germany, while at the same time staying neutral and providing a haven for combatants. One interesting story that is covered briefly is the fact that the Swiss, on occasion, did fire on US aircraft, and in several circumstances, that fire, whether from a Swiss fighter plane or antiaircraft fire, resulted in the deaths of American airmen. There are, however, other stories of the Swiss escorting damaged ships in to land, or not turning rescued crewmen over to the Germans. In short, this is a good book, but it could have been much, much more if it had taken a multi-dimensional approach to the history of the Swiss internees and their aircraft.

Customer Reviews:
Too frustrating!!!.......2007-09-07
I homeschool and bought this book with great enthusiasm. All three projects we attempted were a complete bust. We spent hours collecting all the parts needed, then cutting and preparing. The directions do not go into enough detail and you don't realize, until you have to start over, that something was left out or assumed that you understood. After several attempts and finally getting the projects built, they wouldn't work anyway. My son was off building his own parachute(which worked great) while I was trying to get anything I could find in my kitchen to go up the Archimedes screw!!There must be better resources out there than this completely frustrating book.
What a great book! It should be back in print!.......2001-10-24
My son has checked this book out of the school library so many times he has it memorized! Great fun at home -- inexpensive science projects that really work and are fun to do --- even for Mom! The Rocket created from a 2 liter soft drink bottle and powered by water and a bicycle pump is great. Other favorites include the Archimedes' Screw that moves popcorn and the Rubber Band Powered Boat. Bright, colorful, lots of pictures, easy to understand and easy to build --even for the science challenged!
