White people found her people and took them off island with lie of freedom. She escaped and remain on island with brother. Wolves eat brother. She walk alone and with a special wolf who is kind to her. one day she enter a water cave, found out the truth about her people fate. her people died and she survived. one day white people return to the island once again, she finally allow herself to join them. she became famous and she is buried in california. her clothing is in museum in Italy. wonderful story of her courage life.

I have to smile when reading these other reviews that say this book was one of their favorites as a child. It also was mine. I've read so many books, that most times the memory of the details within them grow dim, but not with "Island of the Blue Dolphins". I can still picture the breathtaking beauty of the island where Karana spent her growing years. I still remember her joys and trials of living alone for so long, after everyone had left. Her ingenuity and strength still amazes me. I can't wait until my children are old enough so I can enjoy this Newberry book with them. It's definitely one in a million.

When I was on vacation at Martha's Vinyard I went to the book store and bought Island Of The Blue Dolphins for myself and I loved it!! I love it so much because of it's beautiful discriptions and details that I can picture in my mind. This book is beautifully written and has wonderful detail of natural survival of hunting, and making friends (Rontu and Rontu-Aru and the English girl Tutok, the fox and Won-a-nee the otter). How many wonderful and beautiful adventures of exciting survival can one indian girl have? I am 10 years old and recommend this book to whoever loves reading and is a fan of detail and beauty!!!!!!!!

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

I first read Dee Brown's book, Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee (1970) as a college assignment. It changed the way I looked at America/our country, America/our history, and America/our land. The book is subtitled "An Indian History Of The American West", and focuses on the period of 1860 to 1890. This was after "The Trail Of Tears" of the 1830s, when the Cherokee, Choctaw, and other Indian nations were forced against their will to evacuate the eastern United States and move west. The book covers the Apaches, the Navajo, the Cheyenne, the Nez Percez, and the Sioux, among others. The wars, the injustices, and the sad fate of men, women, and children who died trying to pack up and move their lives yet once again. Brown doesn't portray the Indians as saints, either, but only as people with limited resources who, too many times, trusted the promises of a government that would, time and time again, go back on it's word, and forcibly humiliate them. Brown also points out that sometimes the Indians overreacted by attacking innocent non-military settlements. Mostly the book is a concise account of the real Manifest Destiny story, and it expels the myths of the old American History 101 textbook, and the romantic Hollywood cowboy/injun-fighter version of our history. It's a tragic and cruel story, really. It's the true story of the progress of one generation of people at the expense of a civilization. Unfortunately that progress was paved with broken promises, injustice, and lives forever lost.

A Wake-up Call for Americans .......2007-09-05

I just (July 2007) acquired my new copy coming from Amazon. I lost my old copy in 1995. I was not naive about politics and government in 1995. Any scintillas of trust in politics and government,are now gone for even more different reasons. This book seems to keep me awake and keeps my ears wider open to what can happen in this country and this world. It is not just about the shameful and bloody acts in our westward expansion. The word "treaty" from these times is a joke. I can also see more about international expansions. America makes large wrongs, as do other countries do to their own people in history. My heart feels buried because Americans, we, made such innumerable, horrendous and cruel acts. This book remains to me as a great "jolt" to my consciousness. He put together a great example of what America did do to the Native American Peoples. Look at the status of the Native American Peoples who are left today.

This book was and contines to be a wake-up call to the asleep teaching of American History. Especially that of Native Americans and most notably our utter ignorance of our history with Latin America.

Bury my heart at wounded knee is a oustanding account of native american history. Very informative and captivating, piquing my interest in native american's. The words tell of a people heroic,caring,hospitable, and understanding almost pushed to the point of annihilation at the hands of conquistadors,whites and others. Sadness,anger,hate, and sympathy are just some of the feelings brought out by reading this book. If you want an unflinching account of native american history this a great place to start.

Initially picked up this book on a Inland Passage Alaska cruise - got it for my almost 12 year old - I read it and was impressed and shared it with my MD 86 year old brother and he wanted the book so I ordered it from you for him. GREAT lessons for all of us but particularly struggling teens who might be facing some tough problems. GREAT excitement!

Touching Spirit Bear is an interesting book. Imagine a 15 year old kid with anger problems whose parents are alcoholics. Sounds like a typical story, well it isn't. In fact it's probably as far away from that as you can get.
The story starts out with him being rowed out to a deserted island off the coast off Alaska and about three pages in he has a flashback. That is the format of the book. It gives the book a jumpy feeling because every few pages it changes the time and the place kind of unnoticabley.
The story mainly takes place in Minneapolis, Minnesota Where he severely hurt a kid by bashing his head against a sidewalk because he had told the Police about a robbery that Cole (the boy) had committed. After the fight he was forced into a detention center where all he thought about was the fight. Throughout that time he decided he would blame it on Cole because he hadn't fought back.
During his stay at the detention center he learned about circle justice. Circle justice is an old indian tradition about curing the soul. It is a unique approach to resolving conflicts between victims and victimizers.
Throughout the book he acts like a typical teenager until he gets mauled by a bear, except the bear who mauled him was not just any bear. It was a special kind of white furred black bear called a spirit bear. After that experience he changes a lot and stops being angry. It was a a turning point. After he gets out of the hospital he starts acting more composed and quiet. He doesn't care what people think of him anymore so he does odd things on the island, like doing "the whale dance" and carving a Totem Pole. In the end he decides that the only way to help the boy who he hurt is to bring him to the island.

Excellent Story for at-risk students.......2007-09-27

I am currently using this book as a literature unit for special education students at the high school level. They are all involved and eager to read. We listen to the story on tape as well as follow along with the book. It's so interesting how quiet they become when the character describes his troubled homelife and abusive father. Although they don't say so, I feel that many of these at-risk students come from a similar background. This is just a wonderful story for them to learn about life and change in peoples' lives.

Following the Native American tradition of Circle Justice, Cole is being abandoned on a remote island in Alaska and must survive for a year. During that year, he is alone to contemplate his life.

This novel is not just an adventure story, but is a book of wisdom based on Native American beliefs. Once you begin to read it, you won't be able to put it down.

I have taught this book to my 8th grade students for several years now. The students love the book and learn a great deal from it. To read the book is to become part of the Circle of Justice.

Picture your self alone on an small island, you're the only person that lives on this island. You have to survive on this island by yourself, and even worse you don't think you belong there. That is exactly what Cole Mathews is going through.
My first reaction to this book was that it wasn't going to be very good. I was very wrong, I really enjoyed reading this book and was rather upset when it ended.

Whether through a weird twist of fate, good friends, or bad friends, or just luck, Cole finds himself having to survive alone on a small island for a year. He has to learn to control his anger, and to be a better person before he has to leave the island, or it will be too late.

There was a part in this book where Cole is trying to escape from the island, and he tries and tries and in the end finds that he hasn't gotten any where. And it makes him so angry because he's used to being in control, he's used to being able to scare people into doing what he wants, and it starts at this point where he realizes that he isn't in control of every thing.
The theme of this book is something like; you aren't in control of every thing, you can't always get your way.

All of the big words and "references" in the world won't change history for you, unfortunately. I notice that among the people who did not like this book, they all pretty much said the same thing: That Stannard didn't paint an accurate picture of the natives of the western hemisphere. That he didn't acknowledge cannabalism (he did), that he didn't acknowledge human sacrifice (he did - to the tune of 20,000 per year in the Inca capital), and that he didn't acknowledge inter-tribal warfare and cruelty (he most certainly did). One of the reasons I liked this book so much was its extensive reference section (with explanations as to most of the references, so if you have any questions about something...LOOK IT UP). It'd do you all some good, rather than blindly naysaying whatever doesn't fit your racist little mold. Does it really MATTER whether or not native peoples practiced unsavory rituals? They're all dead.

In any case, the book was superb and whatever your views are regarding the native peoples mentioned in the book, one point remains irrefutable: They were exterminated. It was deliberate. It was planned, sanctioned, supported, and financed by every exploratory realm in Europe and by the American government throughout it's short and brutal history. You all know it.

It is amazing that we live in a country that was built upon holocaust but we yet we are in complete denial. And not just the U.S., the entire Americas. This book discloses the atrocities committed by the Spaniards and and other Europeans. It also dispels the myth that prior to the arrival of Columbus, America was nothing more than open prairie lands. And it reveals that the so-called new world was heavily populated before the mosting devasting and the largest genocide committed in history. It does more than reveal the diseases that the Spaniards and other Europeans brought to the new world. It uncovers the enslavement and intentional massacres of countless natives of the new world. A sad thing about this book is that those who need to read this book most (the ones in denial), will probably never read this book and continue to perpetuate the lie that no holocaust or genocide was ever committed in the Americas by the Spaniards and other Europeans. If you only read one book over the next decade, this should be it.

Simplisitc and sensationalistic.......2007-03-26

Almost every time someone uses the word 'holocaust' when they are not referring to the actual Holocaust between 1939 and 1945, they use it in an incorrect and sensationalistic manner, comparing the incomparible. This is no exception. It is true that millions of people died following the arrival of Europeans in the New World in 1492. However 90% of them died from Disease. This was an extraordinary number, but there is a difference between planning to murder so many and having them die for biological reasons(not being immune to disease). Indeed many of even the most cynical Spaniards were dismayed that the Indians were dying, either because they could no longer be used as slaves or because they could no longer be enslaved. It is rediculous to pretend that this was a 'holocaust' unless the black Plague that swept Europe in the 13th-14th centuries was also a holocuast.

In addition this book accuses the Europeans of 'racism' which is a patent lie. Race did not propell Europeans across the seas in 1492 and the years afterword. It is true that Europeans looked different than the indigenous people of the New World, but it is not true that this was what motivated colonization, ensalvement, war or exploitation.

Just as the rise of most empires, such as the Chinese or Ottoman, are not accused of being tied up in racism, it is comical to pretend that men like Columbus had any concept of the 19th century ideas of race. The notions are neither found in thier writings or documents and that is why none are quoted in this book. In fact many Spaniards defended the Indians, such as Bartholemew De Las Casas, but all those people are conveniently ignored here. Not a suprise.

David Stannard reveals the awful truth of Aggression and Occupation, misnamed "Discovery" and "Settlement," in the Americas. Readers who, in the names of education and religion, have been exposed to five centuries of revisionist history should be horrified at the truth. If they aren't, it will be a testament to the effectiveness of the church, school and university propaganda to which they have been exposed. The horrors of other holocausts are not excused by recognition that the holcaust in the Americas, perpetrated by European Christians against ancient civilizations were the most horrible in the history of mankind. They continue to this day.

This book is nothing less than the single most important work that you will ever read.

Our entire culture is built on Holocaust Denial while those most responsible for this abnesia drape themselves in the flag of holocaust memorialism but have little honesty in their true agenda. An agenda that allows in North America alone for there to be at least 50 Holocaust memorials, museums and monuments...
only problem is they are ALL about the Holocaust that happened in Europe and NOT about the colossal extermination that took place where they live. It is not only denial on the part of the nations of the Americas and Europe but those responsible for this Holocaust Denial in relation to Indian America insist on an image of being the world's caretakers of holocaust memory. What a bloody audacity.

Why do we let the Spanish off the hook so lightly? Why is there no demand for Spain to make its Mea Culpa? Why is there no AMERICAS HOLOCAUST memorial in Madrid, Washington, London and Ottawa ?

This brilliant book re-addresses the imbalance.

There is a reviewer further down who uses the monica of
"history buff" who rejects the value and integrity of this work. In fact he utterly insults Mr Stannard and his thesis.

So I thought I would check out his other reviews...oh boy!

One of the remarks he makes in a book claiming that Saddam was behind 9/11 goes "But it is very difficult to argue with the facts that were available to the agencies which pointed to a direct link between Saddam and Al Qaeda." This example of his world view is the mild end of it. So people consider the character of the self-described "history buff" who rejects Stannard's brilliant thesis on the Holocaust in the Americas.

The reviewer "history buff" has a world view that comes straight out of the 1950's HUAC committee (he associates all Left wing thought with the Soviet Union not knowing that the Bolshevik regime prohibited the platform of the revolution and that its first victims were in fact the most sincere and dedicated Left revolutionaries. Clearly he has never read the finest autobiography in the history of English language autobiography; Emma Goldman's LIVING MY LIFE volume 1 and volume 2. The latter volume includes a first hand account of the destruction NOT construction of socialism by Lenin and his cohorts ).

Informative study of Native American history.......2006-04-26

I just finished a class on Native American history. The use of the text "First Peoples: A Documentary Survey of American Indian History," by Calloway was very informative. I found that the book expressed the true history of the Native American people. As I read the different chapters, I found my self able to clearly picture the different events that took place. This is coming from a person who purposely saved my history requirement until my second to last class to graduate from college. I have never enjoyed history. This book really changed my views on history!

Great Read.......2005-08-11

A very effective survey of the Native tribes in America from before the whites until present times. The book provided a lot of information regarding the legal fights of the tribes over times, which I found to be very interesting. This includes governmental policies, including the gaming issues. Also, how the tribes have hung onto their culture and identity, which was equally interesting. It was interesting to read of hte mascot issue at the end of the book as well, due to the current issues dealing with them.

Calloway also includes many legal documents which give a greater insight to the happenings of the time. These documents also help to see the issues from both points of view, native and white.

Outstanding textbook about Native American History.......2000-08-02

This was the textbook in my Native American History Class this summer at the University where I am persuing a History Degree with a minor in Teacher Certification. I must say that this is one of the best textbooks that I have used since I began college. The author has taken a wide and complex field of Native American (Indian) History and has effectively narrowed it to interesting and important events. This is a textbook that reads very well. The tragic story of the Native American is told with sensitivity and accuracy. From the beginning of recorded American Indian History to the tragic consequences of dealing with European Invaders-Explorers and its aftermath. The accounts of the Colonial Indians, 5 Civilized Tribes, Indian Wars to present day wounded knee, and so much more are given excellent focus to the student/reader. I highly recommend this book to any Professor who will teach Native American History.

I had to read the book for a cultural anthropology class and many of the passages are easy to read. I started the class thinking of tribes in Africa as "backwards" and at the end of the class I now think that tribes in Africa are another form of a group. The book gives a viewpoint of like you're there.

I haven't even read the entire book yet, but I can still tell how wonderful it is going to be when I have finished it. I'll probably want to read it again because it is so interesting. This study has opened up so many new understandings of unique ways of life that I cannot wait to buy more Case Studies just like this one! It's the perfect addition for anyone with a curiosity of how unique people exist in different parts of the world, specifically in South Africa. By far the most interesting and entertaining work I have read--it sure beats thoses dull books we have to read in AP English!

The Dobe Ju/' hoansi is a masterpiece in modern cultural anthropology. It absorbs the richness and the level of complexity of humankind. Lee opens our mind and lets us appreciate the level of diversity in our world. While Richard B. Lee delineates the differences between our advanced western society and the simple bushmen society of southern Africa,he points-out the similarities we all share as humans, without regards to race, creed, social class or gender. I used this book so much in my California and Politics class. It is very descriptive and helpful. The headings make it easy to study, and know exactly what you are reading about. There are lots of interesting pictures, as well as political cartoons. It was a very helpful book in understanding the diverse and colorful history of California. Read it and check it out for yourself.

I had to use this book for a class I took at the University of California, Santa Barbara (History 177 -- Summer 1999). I thought the book was great in certain areas (prehistoric times, geography, and the native peoples), but deficient in others (water development, railroads, Bear Flag Revolt, gold rush, automobile). Also, California's history is much too complicated to be crammed into this book -- the author should have divided it up regionally, or on a time line to allow himself to get more in depth with this material. Otherwise, if you are interested in a good, yet incomplete overview of the history of the Golden State, read this book!

Elusive Eden Captured.......2000-02-15

History can be exciting, especially when the high points are rendered with such immediacy and clarity. California is both a microcosm and macrocaosm of American History. Richard Rice makes this connection resonant from the original Sutter's Mill gold rush to the current Silicon Valley "gold rush". The themes that define California are U.S. history writ large. Rice lets the reader appreciate California from a variety of personal perspectives: Henry Dana's in "Two Years Before The Mast", Leland Stanford and the other "robber barrons", Hiram Johnson and the reformers, into world war two and the Nisei internees, down through Reagan and the Brown family, and into current times. The history of water rights, which was the basis of the movie Chinatown, becomes a compelling and more accurate story here. The lucid prose is admirably supported by evocative photography. Discover California as it really was and is.

An Adventure in Arizona.......2006-10-12

The Last Lobo by Roland Smith is a cross between adventure (from the boy's perspective) and survival (from the lobo's). Here are the top three reasons why you should read this book. First, it has a good description of the terrain and people. In other words, it was easy for me to picture what I read in my head. Second, it has a fast pace and never lingers on one subject for very long. The author throws in twists when you are not expecting them. Third, the book ties together wolves, endangered species, Native American culture, Arizona and New Mexico. I can think of a lot of other reasons for you to read this book, but I would be 100 before I could list all of them, so I am not going to do that.

*Breaking News* ---Lobo falls in plot hole---.......2005-11-28

The Last Lobo is an interesting animal book about saving an endangered lobo, which is killing off cattle and livestock. The main character, Jacob, is taking a trip to visit his grandfather, who himself is on a visit to his Hopi homeland. On the plane, he meets a person named Buckley, who is interested in Indian carvings. He learns about the animal that is eating the livestock, and tries to find it.
The story is good and worth reading, but there are some plot holes. The disrupted narrative, however, is well hidden, and you won't mind at all. A good book for animal lovers, and for book reports (you can skim it and not miss much), but a character that only appears once was not properly introduced, and got me a little confused. You should read the prequels first, then this.

The Last Lobo Book Review.......2005-10-27

The Last Lobo is about a kid named Jacob Lansa. Jacob has come back from Brazil and his grandfather, Tawapu, but also called Taw.He was supposed to be at a retirement home, had left to Arizona where he had came from. Jacob flies out to Arizona to be with him. He meets a person named Buckley, who sits next to him on the plane. Buckley and Jacob find Taw at the canyon. Jacob sees a newspaper that says they are reintroducing the Mexican wolf, called lobos. The ranchers are getting their livestock killed and are planning on killing the wolf when they see it, even if they have to go to jail. Jacob finds Taw in the canyon. Jacob meets some of his cousins, Marie and Hannah. They also meet Marie's ex-husband Earl. Earl was in jail for manslaughter and they let him out early. Earl threatened Jacob if Jacob didn't stay away from Marie or Hannah. Jacob goes and meets with Uncle John, who was one of Taw's friends from when he lived on the reservation. Jacob tries to capture the wolf with help from Uncle John. The wolf is very smart and digs up some of the traps. Earl is also trying to shoot the wolf, but he wants to kill it. Jacob decides to try to hit the lobo with a tranquilizer dart from a stand near where Uncle John says he thinks the lobo's hideout is. Sure enough, the lobo comes and Jacob hits it with a tranquilizer dart but Earl is also there. Marie tackles him and breaks his leg. The group finds the lobo and also the lobo's den with 4 pups in it. They return the lobos to safety.

I loved this book. I have read both Thunder Cave and Jaguar before and this one was just as good. I thought it was strange how Buckley Johnson just happened to meet Jacob on the plane and ended up becoming good friends with everyone and was in the story up to the end. Buckley Johnson was also the name of a person in Sasquatch who was enigmatic in that story also. Some of my favorite parts are when Jacob meets Earl for the first time. It is exciting and it looks like there would be a fight, then it got broken up by the meeting starting. I didn't understand why Earl didn't shoot Jacob if he was going to shoot his horse because he had already killed someone before. I didn't like how they didn't bring all of the wolves to the government. It would have helped the wolf relocation efforts quite a bit. I liked how the wolf was so smart. It knew how to avoid traps, keep people off its tracks, and not to revisit a kill. Some of the characters I liked were Jacob, because he was the normal person and was very likable. I liked how he could stalk animals without them noticing him. Another character I liked was Taw because he was the one who came back to Arizona in the first place. He also helped his old friend John out by helping him be able to move his left side again. The only character I didn't like was Earl. There wasn't anything he did that was nice. He spent the entire time trying to hurt Jacob, Marie, or the lobo. This was an extremely good book and is one of my favorite books of all.

the saga continues.......2003-10-07

Roland Smith writes about Jake Lansa in a 3 book set - Thunder Cave, Jaguar, and The Last Lobo. I have not yet read the first, but it is next on my list. Smith weaves suspense, intrigue, and cultures in his novel. Thunder Cave takes place in Africa, Jaguar in the Amazon, and Lobo in the American southwest. Readers will be so involved, you won't know your learning about cultures too, Reading out of order isn't a problem, but I wish I had read them in order, Great none the less.
