Book Description

Detective John Cardinal is on the hunt for an ingenious killer even as he mourns his own wife’s tragic death in this thriller of heart-stopping suspense
Autumn has arrived in Algonquin Bay, and with it an unusual spate of suicides. The most shocking victim yet is Detective John Cardinal’s wife, who has finally succumbed to her battle with manic depression. As Cardinal takes time to grieve, his partner, Lise Delorme, handles an unsavory assignment: a young girl appears in a series of unspeakable photos being traded online, and background elements indicate she lives in Algonquin Bay. Delorme is desperate to find the girl before she suffers more abuse.
When Cardinal receives a string of hateful anonymous notes about his wife’s death, he begins to suspect homicide. His colleagues believe he is too distraught to think clearly, and he’s forced to investigate alone. In doing so, he comes up against a brand of killer neither he—nor the reader—has ever seen before.
In his most masterful and thrilling novel yet, Giles Blunt confirms his reputation as a rising international star in crime fiction, and positions Detective John Cardinal among the finest characters in the genre.

3 out of 5 stars Beware.......2007-09-22

This is a well written murder mystery. Despite undisputable evidence, detective John Cardinal has a nagging suspicion that a shocking suicide isn't what it seems. But beware, there is plenty of grief and depression described in vivid detail in this story as the killer is revealed. It's not for everyone.

3 out of 5 stars Half of this series is great..........2007-08-08

...but it's not two of the books, it's half of each book.

I've read the 4 books in this series over the past month and they all have the same problem in my opinion. The chapters which involve the cops Cardinal and Delorme are terrific, but the books contain many chapters which instead follow the criminals involved and I found them uniformly dull and unbelievable. I plodded through them just wanting them to be over.

I wish I could give the series a higher rating because I love the northern setting and the exploration of mental illness in a relationship. I was sorry to read the event of the first chapter of this one despite the lack of surprise due to the foreshadowing of another relationship throughout the series. I was also sorry to see Cardinal's past criminal act swept under the rug as the series progressed. If another book appears in the series I'll read it, but I wish the author would change his formula and keep his main characters involved throughout the book.

5 out of 5 stars Into the dark places.......2007-06-17

John Cardinal, a small-town policeman, seems pretty run-of-the mill, like his community. Algonquin Bay sits on a lake, surrounded by Northern Ontario rocky forests. There are the usual little crimes and petty injustices to deal with. One night, however, while on the discomforting task of exposing an adultery situation, John is called to an accident scene. A woman has fallen from a new high rise. Or was she pushed? Or did she jump? This is of particular importance to John, because it turns out the woman is his wife, Catherine.

A photographer who often went out on solitary picture excursions - even in an Ontario winter - Catherine is also a depressive. She's been in the dark places. She's been hospitalised several times, returning to a warm homecoming and declaring "How lucky I am!" to have a family which can deal with her problems. That luck seems to have run out, or is it eroded? The last option, suicide, appears to be the cause of her death. There's even a note: "By the time you read this . . .". That should close the case and John Cardinal should take some time to work through his grief. His own dark time is just beginning.

John and Catherine were together too long and they knew each other too well for this copper to rest on easy answers. The note is an enigma, not clarified by some disturbing mail John receives. Little bits of information, imparted willingly or inadvertently, build suspicions in his mind, and he must follow them through. To get to the resolution, John encounters some disturbing elements. A child pornography "ring" on the Internet has reached his town. In fact, it might be centred in Algonquin Bay as Cardinal's colleague Lise Delorme is undertaking to determine. How dark is that news to a town where vulnerable children are supposed to be a rarity? A psychiatrist, Dr Frederick Bell, the doctor counselling Catherine, has a checkered background. What relevance do all these things have to the death of his wife?

A good mystery should command your attention, and Giles Blunt gets you up and running from the opening pages. He weaves an intricate tale, populated by some fascinating characters. He portrays them skillfully - none are seriously overdrawn, and all are plausible. The plot shifts are carefully handled, but Blunt isn't a mystery "mechanic". Events are under the control of the people involved and it's their reactions to changing circumstances that keep this book interesting. If you're a mystery buff, this should make a welcome addition to your collection. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

5 out of 5 stars O Canada.......2007-06-14

Don't often read mysterys set in Canada and written by a Canadian. Blunt has created a special place with his Algonquin Bay CID unit. Great read, easy to digest and remember the story line. The characters are fleshed out. I recommend his entire series.

5 out of 5 stars Can't wait for the next one!.......2007-05-28

Having recently read all of Giles Blunt's previous books featuring Cardinal and Delorme, I devoured this one in a single day. It's his best yet, with less of the overt evil and grisly detail of some of the earlier books, but even more of the superb character study and psychological insight. The evil in this book is subtler, and it's completely believable.

Simply put, Blunt is a terrific writer. His prose is crisp and unfussy, yet still evocative and moving. He knows his setting thoroughly and recreates it so effectively that even if you've never been to his small Ontario city, you feel that you know it well too. His characters are vividly drawn and very real; I find myself thinking about Cardinal and Delorme after I've finished of the books, which is as much as you can ask from any writer.

Stephanie Plum, girl bounty hunter, the terror of Trenton, the bane of her boyfriend Joe Morelli's existence, and the delight of her crazy grandma's heart, is in the wrong place at the wrong time--as usual. Just happening to be indulging her nachos jones at a local deli when it's robbed by the notorious Red Devils, Plum is the eye witness who could put the gang leader, known as the Junkman, behind bars... if he just lets her live long enough. Looking for a place to hide out from the killer until the cops catch up with him, Stephanie sneaks into her fellow bounty hunter Ranger's apartment without telling Morelli, who's not overly fond of him. All the usual suspects in this long-running series are along for a wilder than ever ride, including Lula the gun-toting ex-hooker, Grandma Mazur, Stephanie's pregnant sister Valerie and her fiancé, as well as a host of minor characters who bring Trenton's seedier environs to life. Ten Big Ones is another madcap caper by a writer whose fans will doubtless catapult this easy beach read to the top of the bestseller list. --Jane Adams

Book Description

She's accidentally destroyed a dozen cars. She's a target for every psycho and miscreant this side of the Jersey Turnpike. He mother's convinced she'll end up dead...or worse, without a man. She's Stephanie Plum and she kicks butt for a living (well, she thought it would sound good to put it that way...)It begins as an innocent trip to the deli-mart, on a quest for nachos. But Stephanie Plum and her partner, Lula, are clearly in the wrong place at the wrong time. A robbery leads to an explosion, which leads to the destruction of yet another car. It would be just another day in the life of Stephanie Plum...except that she becomes the target of a gang. And the target of an even scarier, more dangerous force that comes to Trenton. With super bounty hunter Ranger out of town (and Stephanie on the outs with vice cop Morelli), she finds herself alone, with a decision to make: how to protect herself and where to hide while on the hunt for a killer known as the Junkman. There's only one safe place, and it has Ranger's name all over it-if she can find it. And if the Junkman doesn't find her first. With Lula riding shotgun and Grandma Mazur on the loose, Stephanie Plum is racing against the clock in her most suspenseful novel yet. Ten Big Ones is page-turning entertainment and Janet Evanovich is the best there is.

4 out of 5 stars Like Cheez Doodles: not nutritious, but yummy and fun.......2007-07-16

I usually don't go in for this kind of "beach-reading", but I make an exception for the Stephanie Plum series because they're so much fun. I figured out a few books back that the key to enjoying this series is to think of them as purely entertainment with very little relation to reality, kind of like a working-class James Bond, but female. With a donut addiction.

Stephanie Plum and her two uber-alpha-men, Morelli and Ranger, are as bold and brave as ever in Ten Big Ones, but I took one star off this review partly because their ongoing love-triangle seems a little bit stagnant in this installment.

The amusing minor characters' story arcs that flow throughout the series are as enjoyable to read as always(Stephanie's sister Valerie and her hapless fiance Albert Kloughn, Lula the ex-ho, et al). However, Grandma Mazur needs to find a new hobby or maybe a suitor, as she seems to be stuck in a rut. We wouldn't want her to get too bored and start using that piece in her purse just for the hahas.

As usual, Janet has added a few oddball characters to the mix in Ten Big Ones, and one that I'm hoping to see return in future books is Sally Sweet because he's so f-f-fudging funny. I didn't really like the Frito-Lay lady and her story very much, another reason for only four stars.

As for the plot of this one, I'll leave that to other reviewers to dissect, except to say that the ending was Wam! Pow! unexpectedly outrageous and funny, so kudos to you Ms. Evanovich.

Whenever I find myself thinking "that would never happen in real life" (and this happens more and more with each Stephanie Plum book) I just remind myself that it's okay to enjoy this kind of read once in a while, so long as I brush my teeth afterwards.

And I just have to add that even though he is one of the more improbable characters here, I still have the major hots for Ranger.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite of the series.......2007-06-12

I'm currently rereading the Stephanie Plum series in order to refresh my history for Book 13. I'm surprised to read that some reviewers detested this book, because it is one of my favorites of the series. It's another one that will cause you to laugh-out-loud with the trouble that Stephanie and her cohorts get into/cause.

In Book 10, Stephanie gets fingered by the Slayer gang in Trenton and is marked for, well, elimination. Not to give too much away of the plot, but since she is marked with a big bullseye, she needs a place to hide out that won't put her family or friends in jeopardy. Where would you go? She tracks down the BatCave (and if you read the books, you know where I'm talking about.)

As far as continuity issues with the editing regarding the Porsche/SUV - there is no problem. Evanovich is referring to the Porsche Cayanne SUV that they were using, sometimes using Porsche and sometimes the SUV to indicate it had more than 2 seats.

I would have preferred another chapter that wrapped up the living conditions for Stephanie after the climax of the plot, but knowing Evanovich, she just wanted to let us all stew over what it all meant until the next book came out ... and who am I to question the master! :)

5 out of 5 stars stepanie does it again!.......2007-06-08

I have read all the previous Stephanie Plum novels and enjoyed this one as well. She has a great sense of humor (love Grandma) and the twists are just enough for light reading

4 out of 5 stars The tenth Stephanie Plum story and still fun.......2007-06-01

Janet Evanovich is a very popular writer, her books consistently appearing on the best sellers lists. Her most popular series is the Stephanie Plum series which contains the tales of a lingerie buyer-turned-bounty hunter.

In this, the 10th (hence the title) book in the line, Stephanie becomes the target of a gang assassin known as Junkman. While trying to balance doing her job, preparing for her sister's wedding and not getting killed, she stays pretty busy.

The writing is light-hearted and Stephanie, along with Lulu, her 'plus sized' coworker and Connie, her friend with mafia contacts, get into very interesting situations. Sally Sweet, her hairy, cross-dressing male friend just make the situations more interesting.

On the romantic side, Stephanie must balance her devotion to Cop and boyfriend Joe Morelli with her increasing physical attraction to the man in black, Ranger, her mentor and hero in the bounty hunting world.

This story is a lot of fun. Read it.

4 out of 5 stars I Love A Mystery!.......2007-08-09

I used to listen to this show when I was younger. I was so excited to hear it again on a cd. The quality of this cd is good. I recommend this cd to anyone that liked the show.

4 out of 5 stars Reason it is the same material.......2006-04-14

To the other reviewer's point, there is a reason that this collection features the "same old shows" that have been kicking around for years, etc. If you read the Encylopedia of Old-Time Radio, you'll see that tapes of the other shows have not been found to date -- the only ones out there are from the later Hollywood shows, not the New York shows with the original cast. Rumors have circulated for years that the tapes are being hoarded somewhere ... but at any rate, these are the ones that are available, until more are discovered.

1 out of 5 stars Another Scam Perpetrated on Us OTR Fans.......2005-12-19

Here again we have the same shows that have been kicking around for decades hugely over-priced to make yet ANOTHER buck out of someone else's work. There is nothing new here so don't waste your money.

Someday (maybe) someone will put together one of these things and will give us something that will make the collection worthwhile. How about the ORIGINAL CAST of "I LOVE A MYSTERY"?
Michael Raffeto is the original Jack Packard (and is the guy creator Carleton E Morse had in mind when he created the part) He, along with Barton Yarborough as "Doc Long" and Reggie Patterson as "Reggie York", are the cast who put I LOVE A MYSTERY into our living rooms back in the good old days...but...no...we get the same old version everybody's been hearing for years with Russell Thorson as Jack, Jim Boles as Doc and Tony Randall as Reggie.

Now, please, I'm saying nothing against these three actors...(nor against Tom Collins, who took over the part of Reggie after Mr Patterson's death --Tom sure got around---he inherited the part of Chandu the Magician too---the original Chandu was Gayne Whitman---interesting because he's the guy trying to get radio stations to buy ADVENTURES BY MORSE on those two "audition shows" you hear on this cd---they did a FINE job recreating these classic shows back in the early 50s but everyone HAS these or can get them much cheaper than they are being offered here...my point is if you're gonna charge me over twenty bucks for something it better not be something I can get free from any collector (minus the cost of a blank cd or dvd). Give me something I haven't heard!!! Please!!!

In the meantime save your money until the people putting these albums out finally realize they are going to have to put in some work if they want to make some money.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have!!.......2004-12-07

After being out of print for a long time I Love A Mystery returns. This set is an excellent representation of Carlton E. Morse's radio series. The set of 20 CDs contains the following programs:
From I Love A Mystery:
The Thing that Cried In the Night
Bury Your Dead Arizona
The Million Dollar Curse (still missing episode 10)

The complete run of Morse's I Love Adventure

The complete first story, "City of the Dead", from Adventures by Morse
Plus the two audition shows for Adventures by Morse.

All sound like they have some cleaning done to them, and sound fantastic. This is a great set, and highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Maxie & Stretch books.......2007-08-22

I very much enjoy reading Sue Henry's books featuring Jessie and Alex, but the Maxie and Stretch stories are quite interesting to read. Can you imagine roaming across the United States at 64 with a dog and in a motor home? I can't, but I envy anyone who could. Makes for a pleasant storyline.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely!.......2007-04-22

Sue Henry's Alaskan mysteries are great favorites of mine, but I knew nothing about her Maxie McNabb and Stretch mysteries. What a find!

This lovely, lightweight tale finds sixty-something Maxie McNabb, a widow, and her wonderful dachshund Stretch in their "minnie winnie" (a small Winebago) touring the American Southwest. It made me want to pack up and go to Taos immediately, the description of the countryside was that vivid, and not at all like a travelogue.

Anyway, while exploring the world of weaving (also fascinating), Maxie inadvertently gets herself mixed up with the mysterious Shirley, who may or may not have attempted suicide, and then becomes a target herself of murderous killers she does not know. As mentioned above, the mystery is light and doesn't take itself too seriously, and it all gets wound up in about 3 complicated pages that leave more questions than answers, but who cares?

There are mentions of our Alaskan heroine Jessie, and Butch, a character from the Alaska mysteries, puts in an appearance. All in all, I was delighted with this book, and look forward to the next, just published.

3 out of 5 stars A Maxie McNabb adventure.......2007-02-25

Intrepid senior citizen, Maxie McNabb has set off once again in her Winnebago, accompanied by her mini dachshund, Stretch. This time she is intent on exploring areas of New Mexico and makes a stop at the town of Taos. A chance encounter with a strange woman who was rescued from death by asphixiation in her car, leads Maxie to offer her a bed for the night. She confides in Maxie that she was recently taken in by a con man who stole $100,000 from her and absolutely denies attempting suicide. Maxie becomes very interested in weaving after seeing an exhibition in the town's gallery but is horrified to learn that a man's body was found in a vat of the dye used to colour the wools used in weaving. What follows is is a collection of things that could only happen to Maxie...a burglary, a kidnapping, a murder/suicide...altogether too much for a woman in her 60's to cope with...chipper as she is! It's an ok read but has a lot of scenic padding to fill it out.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of fluff, not much substance.......2007-02-23

I loved Maxie and Stretch in the 2 prior books in which they were characters, but this book was very disappointing. I normally like details of the characters' environment, but this book contained page after page of details, such as mentioning each business establishment Maxie passed as she walked along, each diagonal or right turn she took... and almost none of the things she passed was ever mentioned again. There was a very small percentage of words that actually were related to clues or information concerning the mystery / mysteries that Maxie eventually solved. I love New Mexico, have travelled there regularly, and have been to Taos, but this book contained way too much filler and very little relevant or even interesting material. And I was fool enough to buy the hardcover version, being so eager to read more of Maxie and Stretch!

4 out of 5 stars Maxie & Stretch are at it again........2007-02-13

Once again Sue Henry has taken the RV Road to adventure. This time to beautiful Taos, New Mexico where she becomes involved in yet another mystery. I love this newest character she had created. Having RV'd many of the miles Maxie covers, I appreciate the detail and accuracy given to the surroundings. A quick and delightful read!

Josephine Tey is often referred to as the mystery writer for people who don't like mysteries. Her skills at character development and mood setting, and her tendency to focus on themes not usually touched upon by mystery writers, have earned her a vast and appreciative audience. In Daughter of Time, Tey focuses on the legend of Richard III, the evil hunchback of British history accused of murdering his young nephews. While at a London hospital recuperating from a fall, Inspector Alan Grant becomes fascinated by a portrait of King Richard. A student of human faces, Grant cannot believe that the man in the picture would kill his own nephews. With an American researcher's help, Grant delves into his country's history to discover just what kind of man Richard Plantagenet was and who really killed the little princes.

Book Description

Josephine Tey re-creates one of history's most famous -- and vicious -- crimes in her classic bestselling novel, a must read for connoisseurs of fiction, now with a new introduction by Robert Barnard

Inspector Alan Grant of Scotland Yard, recuperating from a broken leg, becomes fascinated with a contemporary portrait of Richard III that bears no resemblance to the Wicked Uncle of history. Could such a sensitive, noble face actually belong to one of the world's most heinous villains -- a venomous hunchback who may have killed his brother's children to make his crown secure? Or could Richard have been the victim, turned into a monster by the usurpers of England's throne? Grant determines to find out once and for all, with the help of the British Museum and an American scholar, what kind of man Richard Plantagenet really was and who killed the Little Princes in the Tower.

The Daughter of Time is an ingeniously plotted, beautifully written, and suspenseful tale, a supreme achievement from one of mystery writing's most gifted masters.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brain-teaser, brilliant, historical mystery.......2007-06-04

Some say this book is responsible for the renewed interest in Richard III. Whether true or not, it certainly peaked my curiosity.

It's chock full of history. But I have one word of caution: If you know nothing about the Wars of the Roses, the reign of Edward IV or Richard III, I recommend you first read Sharon Kay Penman's THE SUNNE IN SPLENDOUR. Without a good foundation in the history of the times, you'll miss much of the subtle references.

On the other hand, the unveiling of Richard III (biased in favor of the man) appears secondary to the point of the book. Rather, I think Tey meant to call historians to task. If history were written after proper (or legal) interpretation of the evidence at hand, she seems to contend, it might prove a whole lot more accurate.

The Daughter of Time by Josephine Tey

Alan Grant is in the hospital with a broken leg and concussed spine; he fell through a trap door when chasing a crook. Bored, he asked for some books and prints. One of those prints has the portrait of Richard III. one of the greatest villains in English history according to the legends. Are histories written by the winners to justify their actions? Grant develops an interest in English history in general and the time of Richard III. His Parliament was the most liberal and progressive on record; why was he such a villain? In Chapter 3 it says that Tyrrell was hanged for smothering the Two Princes after being found guilty and confessing. That should pretty much solve the crime.

Thomas More's "History of Richard III" was based on hearsay (Chapter 7). More got his story from John Morton, a bitter enemy of Richard III. Richard III's contemporaries did not mention the murder of the Two Princes, not did Henry VII in his Bill of Attainder after Richard III's death. The conclusion must be that the Two Princes were still alive! In Chapter 8 Elizabeth Mackintosh misrepresents the Boston Massacre, so I question her story about Tonypandy. [The Boston Massacre was real. The troops who shot into an unarmed crowd were tried for murder, and acquitted.] The conversations between Grant and Carradine are used to explain late 15th century history. The Bishop of Bath told of an early marriage of Edward IV that would disinherit Edward's children, the Two Princes and their sister Elizabeth (future wife of Henry VII). Richard III's mistake was to pardon Lord Stanley and Bishop Morton (Chapter 10). Perhaps Richard III was too easy-going with his enemies?

Chapter 11 tells about two Scottish women martyrs in a legend that has never been verified. Why did Henry VII order the destruction of Titulus Regius without it being read by Parliament? Why did nobody speak then about the death of the Two Princes, if it did happen then? The fact that the murder of the Two Princes was never mentioned while Richard III was alive must mean they were still alive. Grant explained who benefitted from their death (Chapter 13). Sir James Tyrrell was well-rewarded by Henry VII until a falling-out in 1502 (Chapter 14). Then he was captured and beheaded without a trial! The story of a confession came later. Those who had prospered under Richard III died when Henry VII took power. [The story about Richard III's "warm heartedness" reminds me of Machiavelli's advice that it is better to be feared than loved.]

Henry VII was the first English king to have a bodyguard (Chapter 15). They tell of the events of 1486, when Sir James Tyrrell received a general pardon in June, then a second in July. Henry VII invented the Star Chamber, the classic example of tyranny. Chapter 16 summarizes the known facts. Grant finds Richard III innocent of murdering the Two Princes (who were obstacles to Henry Tudor). There is a surprise in Chapter 17. Ever since the Stuarts they knew that Richard III was innocent! Horace Walpole wrote about this in the eighteenth century. So why has the vicious legend kept going? Blame William Shakespeare and his play. Just as Hollywood created a "Wild West" of Cowboys and Indians to hide and obscure the real history of the late 19th century America. Grant explains why the mystery about the deaths suggests Henry VII's guilt.

I wonder why there was no print of Henry VII here? Richard III has "quite a nice face, isn't it?" Can you judge a person by their looks? It was the policy of Henry VII to eliminate all rivals to the throne, such as the heirs of York, but few details are given here.

5 out of 5 stars This highly surprising telling...........2007-02-10

...of one of the oldest mysteries in England was thoroughly enjoyable. The story is told in an intelligent manner and seems to logically solve the mystery. Until I read another theory on these two little princes I find more believable I'll stick with this one!

4 out of 5 stars Richard the hero.......2007-01-10

Josephine Tey wrote this in the 1950s, an examination of the place of Shakespeare's arch-villain King Richard III in history, as a detective story of a kind. The attitudes it reveals are dated, and the environment in which the book is set (a hospital) quaint social history. But the story she explores is exciting, challenging and will change your mind about the history you learned at school and never questioned afterwards. My only quibble is that the most famous picture of Richard III, in which he is shown putting on or taking off a ring and in which it can clearly be seen that he has one shoulder higher than the other, which is much referred to in the book, is not the one used on the cover. Read this book, it will change your mind.

5 out of 5 stars Shear delight.......2007-01-04

One of those rare novels that is both entertaining and informative, like the Da Vinci Code. A novel that can be read over and over again. The CD version read by Derick Jacobi hightens the authors brilliance and the readers genius. Highly recommended. You will never tire of listening to them.

Book Description

Everything is going great for Suze. Her new life in California is a whirlwind of parties and excellent hair days. Tad Beaumont, the hottest boy in town, has even asked Suze out on her very first date. Suze is so excited that she's willing to ignore her misgivings about Tad... particularly the fact that he's not Jesse, whose ghostly status—not to mention apparent disinterest in her—make him unattainable.

What Suze can't ignore, however, is the ghost of a murdered woman whose death seems directly connected to dark secrets hidden in none other than Tad Beaumont's past.

"There's no such thing as ghosts". At least, that's what the scientific community believes. High school sophomore Susannah Simon wishes she could agree. She's only lived in sunny California for two weeks, and already her life's a whirlwind of pool parties, excellent hair days, and new friends. Oh, yeah ... and her stepbrothers. But otherwise, things are going fab. Until the ghost of a dead woman shows up at her bedside, screaming and begging Suze to find "Red" and tell him that he isn't responsible for her death. Tracking down a murderer isn't exactly easy, especially when the clues that Suze pieces together lead straight to the father of Tad Beaumont, the cutest and richest boy in school ... and the first boy who's ever asked Suze out. Oops.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Sequel.......2007-08-07

Book #2 in the Mediator series by Meg Cabot opens about a week after the first book ended. Suze, mediator at large, is suddenly visited in the middle of the night by a screaming ghost begging her to tell "Red" that she knows he didn't kill her. With a cryptic message like that, Suze checks around to find out who might be called Red, leading her to a prominent businessman and his hunky son, Tad. Delivering her message is easier said than done, and Suze becomes uneasy when she's rushed out of the strange home of Red Beaumont (even though she's definitely attracted to Tad). Imagine her surprise when the ghost reappears, accusing her of not delivering the message at all, and she runs into a second ghost who tells her Beaumont is responsible for HER death. What's going on? Does Suze have the right person? Is Red Beaumont a cold-blooded murderer? Is he a vampire? What about Jesse, the hot ghost living in her bedroom? Will Tad ask her out?

This is a very good sequel to the first book in this series. Suze is finding an ally in Father Dominic, a fellow mediator, and her circle of friends is growing in her new home. We also meet her father, a ghost who has traveled across the country to give his daughter advice. This story, while of course focusing on the mediator aspect, also brings Suze into a more complex mystery and shows us her survival skills outside of her ghostly talents. There's a pretty good twist towards the end, and the tension between Suze and Jesse is intensifying. This is a fun series, not meant to be taken too seriously, and I look forward to reading more. Surprisingly well done, if you enjoy paranormal romance and suspense, you'll definitely like this one.

1 out of 5 stars Not very good, in my opinion.......2007-08-04

I really enjoyed the first book in the series, ( Shadowland (The Mediator, Book 1) ) it seemed unique enough. But this one... well first I'd like to point out that in this book Meg Cabot repeats a lot of things she said in the first book. I mean yes I suppose it's nice to make the books so you really dont have to start at the beginning of the series to understand what is going on, but there is a fine line between that, and repeating an ENTIRE PARAGRAPH WORD FOR WORD from the first book ( which Cabot DID do ). During most of this book it seemed to me that Meg Cabot just did not know what to write. It all seems like she just improvised, and, most of it is repeated stuff from Shadowland ( if not word for word, than the basic idea of it ). Thankfully, in the later books this doesnt happen so often, so if you can bare through this one, than the series is over all pretty interesting.
Also, it gets very annoying how obsessed Suze is with getting a boyfriend; like its the only thing that matters, ever. And how being a Mediator " Is so horrible Oh i just wish I was normal " ( This continues on throughout the series ).

After moving from her New York home to Carmel, California, Suze's life is finally looking up!

Her days are filled by parties and good hair days - what every teenage girl can relate to wanting. The only thing that Suze wants to change about herself is the fact that she can see ghosts who want to pass messages along to friends or family. She is a mediator.

Even though everything seems to be going her way, Suze has a ghost that seems to be connected to Tad Beaumont, the hottest guy in town, who also happens to have asked her out. Suze just can't understand what Tad and this ghost have to do with each other.

And then she meets Tad's father.

NINTH KEY is the second book in THE MEDIATOR series, following Shadowland (The Mediator, Book 1), and is a fun addition to your bookshelf. There is a good mix of ghosts, romance, and creepy characters! Another fun Meg Cabot book!

I definately reccomend it!

Book Description

Three of New York Times bestselling author Tony Hillerman's most popular novels are together for the first time in one volume.

Tony Hillerman is one of the most revered and honored mystery writers published today. This stunning collection includes the critically acclaimed novels Skinwalkers, A Thief of Time, and Coyote Waits, all of which have been adapted for PBS by producer Robert Redford. This is a must-have anthology from one of the great masters of suspense.

In Skinwalkers, three shotgun blasts explode into the trailer of Officer Jim Chee of the Navajo Tribal Police. Chee survives to join partner Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn in a frightening investigation that takes them into a dark world of ritual, witchcraft, and blood -- all tied to the elusive and evil "skinwalker." In A Thief of Time, a noted anthropologist vanishes at a moonlit Indian ruin where "thieves of time" ravage sacred ground for profit. When two corpses appear amid stolen goods and bones at an ancient burial site, Leaphorn and Chee must plunge into the past to unearth the astonishing truth behind a mystifying series of horrific murders.

And in Coyote Waits, it wasn't the car fire that killed Navajo Tribal Policeman Delbert Nez -- a bullet did. Officer Jim Chee's good friend Del lies dead, and a whiskey-soaked Navajo shaman is found with the murder weapon. The old man is Ashie Pinto. He's quickly arrested for homicide and defended by a woman Chee could either love or loathe. But Pinto won't utter a word of confession or denial. Leaphorn and Chee must unravel a complex plot involving a historical find, a lost fortune, and the mythical Coyote, who is always waiting, and always hungry.

Book Description

In this extraordinary thriller, rich in the atmospheres of medieval and contemporary France, the lives of two women born centuries apart are linked by a common destiny.

July 2005. In the Pyrenees mountains near Carcassonne, Alice, a volunteer at an archaeological dig stumbles into a cave and makes a startling discovery-two crumbling skeletons, strange writings on the walls, and the pattern of a labyrinth; between the skeletons, a stone ring, and a small leather bag.

Eight hundred years earlier, on the eve of a brutal crusade to stamp out heresy that will rip apart southern France, Alais is given a ring and a mysterious book for safekeeping by her father as he leaves to fight the crusaders. The book, he says, contains the secret of the true Grail, and the ring, inscribed with a labyrinth, will identify a guardian of the Grail. As crusading armies led by Church potentates and nobles of northern France gather outside the city walls of Carcassonne, it will take great sacrifice to keep the secret of the labyrinth safe.

In the present, another woman sees the find as a means to the political power she craves; while a man who has great power will kill to destroy all traces of the discovery and everyone who stands in his way.

1 out of 5 stars Boring; Predictable.......2007-09-29

Yet another da Vinci Code wanna-be/clone. Self indulgently too long (by about 200 pages), with very pedestrian, predictable writing (and full of typos - where were the editors??). What gives this book any interest/color is its descriptions of this hot, arid corner of southwest France and its history (although the history is quite superficial).

3 out of 5 stars Eh.......2007-09-21

Labyrinth is the story of the Holy Grail, the Crusades, and the Cathar heresy of the 13th century, as told through the experiences of two women: Alice Tanner, living in 2005 and Alais Du Mas, living in 1209. They have a lot of more in common than their first names. One afternoon, while on an archaeological dig, Alice finds a brooch as well as a cave with human remains in it. The narrative goes back and forth between the two time periods.

The book's premise is interesting, and I thought it a good idea to tell the story through the female perspective, but I thought the author got too bogged down in describing every single little thing! The devil may be in the details, but I thought that the describing of everything really detracted from the story. I also didn't like Alais's character. Mosse makes the same mistake that many writers of historical fiction make: the character was too modern for the time in which she lived. In short, there are better works of historical fiction out there on the medieval period. Don't waste your time with this one.

3 out of 5 stars Labyrinth by Kate Mosse.......2007-09-19

If only Kate Mosse had published her novel not in 2006, but shortly after the astonishing success of the Da Vinci Code, it perhaps would've received the literary respect it deserves, instead of coming last in a slew of novels involving the subjects of the Holy Grail, the Knights Templar, and what they mean in the present day. The quote on the back of the paperback edition from the Kirkus Review really says it all: "A quickly paced adventure that wears its considerable learning lightly - and of higher literary quality than The Da Vinci Code, to which it will inevitably be compared." And yet Labyrinth goes more than a few steps further, not just adding new and original twists to the myth of the grail, but adding a new depth and level that hasn't been seen before. As for the truth behind it all, Mosse doesn't offer a note of explanation, but leaves it to the reader's imagination.

Labyrinth opens with one of the two main characters, Alice, working on an archaeological site in southern France, where she finds a hidden cave and two skeletons within. She also finds a unique ring bearing an unusual symbol: a labyrinth. Notifying the authorities of the discovered site, with the skeletons it suddenly becomes a crime scene, and the archaeologists are kicked off the site. The reader is then taken back in time to the thirteenth century, where they meet the other main character, Alaïs, a young girl held back by tradition and ritual in a chivalric society where the knight and the priest are strongest. For the duration of the book, the reader follows these two characters, as they live their lives in parallel.

As Alice returns to her hotel, strange things start to happen, as strangers contact her about what she found in the cave, police telling her to describe exactly what she saw and confiscating her sketches. Members of the dig go mysteriously missing, as people begin to die for unknown reasons. Finding pieces of evidence, Alice weaves together the story bit by bit, and as she does she discovers that she is intrinsically linked to it all, and most importantly to Alaïs. Her strange dreams of this unknown girl from the late Middle Ages are the least of her worries.

Alaïs finds herself caught up in the changing and challenging times when the pope launches a crusade against the Cathars, a declared heretic group who believe that while God is absolute and utmost, the work they do in their lives is by their doing and not God's. It is a time when Christians are fighting Christians overtly because of their supposed heretical ways, but subversively because the northern French want the rich southern land of the langue d'Oc.

Wrapped in this dense plot is the story of the Grail, which every Christian of every group seeks, and it is only when the three ancient texts with the strange hieroglyphs are brought together, that the true way to the Grail will be shown. But the story of this Grail is not the one that we all think we know, but something deeper and more ancient that is tied in with this mysterious symbol of the labyrinth, and reaches back into Ancient Egypt and the founding of civilization.

While the last third of the book seems somewhat rushed, as Mosse forgoes the back and forth chapters through time, and relies on present day characters telling what they know of the past; there is an inevitable building that results in a climactic ending of not just character realization, but eye-opening shock on the reader's part, as they finally know the whole story. Like the symbol, Labyrinth is a story that begins simple and straightforward, but grows more and more complex, until the denouement when all is revealed and finally understood. 4 out of 5 stars Interesting and entertaining.......2007-09-12

I enjoyed this book a great deal, primarily because the 12th century characters were so compelling (I agree with previous reviews that the modern-day Alice was not as interesting or believable as her Alais counterpart). The history and description of the Languedoc was fascinating. My complaints about the book are that, given its length, it did not go into very much detail about the Cathars and their theology, nor about what Mosse perceives the "true grail" to be. For such a long book, I felt like it wasn't until halfway through that any significant questions posed were being answered. Finally, and this is just a personal thing -- I find it irritating when big, open questions in a book (or a movie) are all tied up in a conversation at the end. I feel it's better to let it come out in the action of the story. Still, a vivid and very entertaining historical novel and worth reading.

1 out of 5 stars Pointeless novel.......2007-09-07

This book is pointless, overlong, under plotted, and is "much ado about nothing". Unidimensional characters trapped in a maze of nothingness. For me, it was a stupendous disappointment from start to finish.

I kept reading it, expecting (hoping, really) about some kind of development or originality. I'd even welcomed silly plot twists! But you end up with plenty of descriptions of places and things (gotta fill those pages!) and pretty much nothing else.

My only consolation is that I did not pay for it.

STAY CLEAR OF THAT BOOK

Thanks.

4 out of 5 stars New twist on an old fave.......2007-08-26

This is a good set of books for the young teen with lots of fun and a mystery to solve before Nancy can. If your child thinks the original Nancy is too old fashioned then this will win her over as it is set in the "here and now" with cell phones, the internet and all the usual suspects of the 90's and beyond. Definitely worth a read.

1 out of 5 stars New Nancy a bit like Paris Hilton.......2007-07-18

For those of us who grew up reading the yellow Nancy Drew series, prepare to be disappointed with the new series. Yes, there is no more Nancy picking out which frock to wear, or references to baking casseroles, which seemed antiquated back in the 70's. However, if you can overlook the dated feeling of the yellow series, Nancy, despite the June Ward stereotype, was a smart young woman. Girls could look up to the old Nancy as a shrewd, moral, pretty, bright, courageous young woman, who was thoughtful, had good manners, was considerate, and was aware of her femininity, but didn't let that stop her from being a terrific detective whom everyone, male and female alike, admired.
I purchased a new Nancy Drew for my niece and began to thumb through it. The new Nancy talks about a boy looking at her "long and hard" in one book, and whether she should tell the boy staring at her that she has a boyfriend. The word "sleazy" is mentioned, and it seems that Nancy has been transformed from a smart young woman for pre-adolescent girls to admire to a modern, superficial teenage romance novel girl. The new Nancy, it seems, has lost a lot of her intelligence, replaced with cliquish, materialistic, superficiality, a girl whose inner musings remind one of a teenage tabloid magazine gossip column. Definitely a disappointment- not the wholesome heroine I was hoping for my daughter to read about and emulate. I'd rather skip over the "Betty Crocker" stuff in the old yellow series and read those instead.

5 out of 5 stars Good books.......2007-03-26

These books are great. They are so much better then the other ones. The other ones were kinda boring. These are exicting. You can tell what Nancy is thinking and feeling. If you like Mystery and cliff-hangers then buy this boxset now. This boxset is a good way to start the series.

3 out of 5 stars kind of boring.......2007-03-13

I am not a big fan of the girl detective series even though i love nancy drew. nancy is now rather forgetful (i liked the perfect nancy better) and most the new mysteries are rather lousy. i guess simon and schuster ran out of ideas for new books after doing 300+ mysteries. i do enjoy the new found richness of the characters that people say they lost in the 1990's (i partly agree). bess is now a mechanic, george is a computer whiz, and nancy cant remember to fill up her car with gas! some of the stories are kind of repeaters of the original series and even the tile of one is the same as nancy drew #66 even though the story is way different.

Nice starter set for my 9yo daughter. Classic, a bit dated but holds up well. Nice quick easy read.

Book Description

The mysteries of the universe are in the palm of the hand of an unsuspecting, Jake Moustachio. His Grandpa's seemingly ordinary magnifying glass is the portal to a world of fantastic misadventure and mysterious crimes . Awaiting our young detective is Delbert, The Keeper of Time. A nervous stumpy little man, who has summoned young Moustachio to The Museum of Time; a strange and spooky castle once owned by the famous archaeologist Lord Grimthorpe. A mystical bell that controls all time has been stolen! To find out who has snatched The Bell of Time, Jake, joined by his eight year old sister Alexa and their crazy cat Rex must use their keen detective skills to gather clues, while encountering a collection of strange and curious suspects throughout their misadventure. Was it Mrs. Smythe, the mad capped, knife swinging cook, with her poisonous lemon tarts, who stole time? Maybe it was Delbert's twin brother Rupert, the grumpy, jealous librarian of time, who snatched the bell? Could it have been the evil, lying Lord Beasley, seeking his revenge? Or was it the beautiful and secretive Mrs. Panosh, wanting to hide her dastardly deed who is guilty of the crime? Time is running out for our young detective and his companions, as they go on a wild goose ride, chased by suits of armor, haunted by the spirits of The Knights of Lion Heart. Will the spirits stop them from finding time? There is only one guy who can solve this crime and restore time back where it belongs. Inspector Moustachio is his name, and solving mysterious crimes is his specialty!

5 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable chapter book to read with the kids!.......2007-04-18

My two older boys (8 & 6) and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. What a great premise for a story that celebrates the wisdom and problem solving skills of our children. I really liked the fact that it takes what would otherwise appear to be an ordinary family heirloom (grandfather's magnifying glass) & creates an adventure from it. In today's technology age this is a welcome retreat and allows our children to use their imaginations. I can't help but think that my children must be creating the history associated with the objects in our house - what a great thing!

My kids really related well to the heroes Jake and Alexa. They also found Rex the Cat to be hilarious. This book is entertaining, exciting and funny (with a little magic and family mixed in as well). We all really liked the ending of this book and are looking forward with great anticipation to many more Misadventures of Inpector Moustachio!

Definitely a two-thumbs up! I would recommend this book to all parents of young children. The adventures of Jake, Alexa, and their cat Rex really bring this book to life. I really enjoyed reading this book. I felt as if I was part of the story myself. While reading, my children were always thrilled to see what would happen next in the book. They absolutely LOVED the book and they, including I, are looking forward to the next series of The Misadventures of Inspector Moustachio!
